R3L4X M4G4Z1N3* OCTOBER 1996 edition (issue # 18)
the magazine for the generation with an eye for the
finer details in the CBM 64 scene, was brought to you
by PHUTURE (Software & Marketing), your favourite
disk-magazine releasing game label.

                       -----------------
                   ... Internal affairs ...
                       -------------------
Seven years of might, seven years of pride!
------------------------------------------------------------
Dateline September 1989: a new singlefile based disk
magazine entered the emptly media landscape to com-
pete with the few publications informing the masses
about current happenings and supplying helpful data
needed to live and survive in the scene, a scene
which was more powerful and populated that time. Be-
ing along with MAGIC NEWS, SEX 'N CRIME, SCENE
PRESS, THE TIMES and other small publications the
pioneers in the disk magazine business, the staff
members managed to keep it up on a high standart in
all different periods the magazine got released in, a
service for the scene which was at an every time
appreciate by a qualified and well informed audience.
Back in late 1994 the Relax Magazine relaunched the
market to continue its very own success story, un-
stopable until now.

We want to express our respect to those worthy he-
roes who supported us from the very beginning as
EDITORS aswell as FREELANCERS adding graphics,
soundtracks and even outfits. Responsible for the
content were people like Tom, Tom Tailor, Ross, Skid
Row, Skinhead, Scroll and Deff who all unfortunately
could NOT continue their job for this magazine for
different reasons. Non-editorship related freelan-
cers covering the outfit in any way have been TPA
(Thomas Heinrich)/X-Ample, $FE (Marcel Siegert)/
Level 99, Sys, Cruise, Zardax, Fanta, Ironcat, MOK
and Arne just to name a few of them all helping us to
create one of the most successful magazines in his-
tory. Furthermore many thanks go to the current
team with MARC, MAX, FUBEN and PRI all doing their
best to hold up the highest possible level. Let's hope
the best for the upcoming seven years, not only for
this magazine but aswell for the scene, a scene losing
more and more of its former glance day by day.

What else might be important to know about this edi-
tion? We included a routine which makes it possible to
run an IRQ-loader and to play doublespeed musics si-
multaneous on NTSC systems, just for those who did
not believe in a realisation of it. So much about the
technical details this time.

                -----------------------
... an own goal by REFLEX ...
                --------------------------
The Relax Magazine is well known for their CRITICAL
but OBJECTIVE reports about the various scene
groups . This kind of journalism is highly appreciated
by the circle of readers who are interested in RE-
LIABLE information instead of prepared propaganda
to dazzle the masses and to reflect the attention far
away from the naked facts aswell known as TRUTH. It
is no secret that people only want to read positive
and promising news about their own groups, so these
persons' interest is for sure to cover their weak-
ness by coming up with semi-professional created
facts to prove their manipulations and to DISCREDIT
critical sources in order to get their own name out
of the spotlight.
Along with the demo release of "Drug Sixtyfour" by
the once so popular group Reflex a NOTEFILE got
spread, it's name was "HAVE A GOOD JOINT". As it
seemed the author of the note has been smoking a
joint while editing the text as he used to express his
very own DREAMS which seem to have influenced him
a lot, otherwise his trip outside the real world and
IGNORING the reality can not be explained. There is
absolutely NO problem for us to come up with FACTS
directly from the INVOLVED persons, here they are:

* The activity level of the former Reflex members who
became active under CYANCE and later on REFLEX
64 has been quite low this year. Nevertheless the
demo "Centric Preview" has WON the competition at
the Symposium 1996, what is for sure a proof that
they were NOT totally inactive when they left.
Infront of the Assembly 1996 PVCF has posted in
channel # c-64 (IRC) that NOT the decreased activi-
ty level has been the reason for leaving but the
generally LAME attitude of a certain member, a
member which curiously attacked the press for do-
ing a PROPER job while reporting about Reflex. Due
to the fact that it got posted in the PUBLIC a lot of
person got witness of it, such as e.g. Leo Burkhard
of the German paper magazine 64'ER from MAGNA
   MEDIA.

* When it comes up to the activity level of the former
Reflex members it should be pointed out that PVCF
is still arranging demo soundtracks on the CBM 64.
His work is supposed to be released at THE PARTY
   1996 in Denmark.
Furthermore he competed at the Assembly 1996
music competition, showing that the interest in this
computer system is not totally lost.

* The information about certain members leaving the
rows of Reflex has been supplied by PVCF in form
of a textfile on a MS-DOS disk, containing the exact
dates when an every single member left. Copies of
the textfile edited by PVCF have reached BIZ-KID
and RRR, so the INTEGRITY of the information pub-
lished in both productions, SKYHIGH and RELAX
MAGAZINE, is given for sure. ------- ------
   --------
* Disliking the artwork in the game Centric is defina-
tely NOT a crime, coming up with FANTASY data is.
The multicolour bitmap graphics, exactly TWO logos
and FOUR fullscreen pictures, got finished and for-
warded in TWO weeks only in late 1994, proving the
fact that these component are for sure ANCIENT
components. The sprites got revised in March 1995
   after upgrading the sprite format.
Centric got a generally GREAT RATING in the 64'ER
magazine, being THE ONLY HOST for CBM 64 users
these days, and the great rating contained the
   graphics, too.

Fact is that the author of the childish and incompent
written note reached his aim, he got Reflex back into
the headlines of public interest, unfortunately not by
setting up standarts like Quiss, PVCF and Private
Soldiers used to, what is for sure sad to see.

                         ---------------
                   ' ... 4k contests ... '
                         -----------------
4k contests are already regular components of the
AMIGA/PC competitions held at the various parties in
Europe while there was no sign in seight to arrange
similar events for the CBM 64, atleast not at a re-
markable level yet.
This situation changed completely with the "4k NTSC
Demo Compo", a contest which became a success for
the arrangers.

The basic idea to introduce a competition like this one
to the CBM 64 community came up by WrongWay/FOE
in December 1995. It got its first structures after
discussing the topic with Elwix/Style. Both ap-
proached Coolhand/Success & The Ruling Company
to take over the organisation as both wanted to con-
tribute with a production. So WrongWay and Coolhand
devised the set of rules and later on Coolhand came
up with the the rules, the criteria for judging and the
instructions how to enter the competition. Further-
more he recruited with MPhyton, Mr. X, Demonger and
Diskmaster four judges from the NTSC demo scene.
The motivation NOT to invite technical experts has a
simple explaination. The idea behind this decision was
to emulate the taste of the audience, an audience
normally NOT consisting of experts only, a situation
being quite similar to MAIL CHARTS which are going to
be built up by of the votes from mail traders only.

The competition has been officially announced in the
popular American DRIVEN magazine in March 1996,
with the deadline set at July 1st, 1996. By the dead-
line 17 entries came in and qualified to compete, 13
from out of the NTSC and 4 out of the PAL area
from all over the world, which worked for 100% on
NTSC CBM 64s.
Elwix won the contest, according to the jury, followed
by Stephen Judd and TMR. Later on Driven ran a poll
asking the readers for their judgement, and this time
K2's entry was the favourite one according to rea-
der's choice.

The event used to become a big success, taking in
mind that the NTSC demo scene is one of the few
parts of the scene on this computer system which
are still growing, and one of the first demo contests
where NTSC and PAL entries fought for the crown.

And as success concepts are getting copies very
often, this event makes no exception, No Name with
their magazine "Contrast" arranged a competition
like this for the PAL market. Let's see if the reso-
nance will be similar.

------------------------------------------------------------
  ' ... Votesheet Spreaders and News suppliers ... '
------------------------------------------------------------
The RELAX votesheets have been spread, as usual,
by our very own ZAPOTEK, VIOLATOR and DR. SOFT,
who all are serving as authorized mail distribtors.

Apropos votesheets. A well known rule is what SELF
VOTING is strictly forbidden, not only in the Relax but
in any other magazine, too. It may happen that people
are a bit nervous or confused and fill in a name of
their own rows, what is no big deal for us as we sim-
ply scratch it. But when it happens more than in only
one cathegory and even twice, in the submitted votes
for BOARD and MAIL CHARTS, things start to be more
interesting for further investigation.
Our personal VOTESHEET FILLER OF THE MONTH is
JAZZCAT/ONSLAUGHT for sending in the following
votes:

                         PAPER VOTESHEET
                         ----------------
Single Coders    : 05. Jolz/ONSLAUGHT
Single Artists   : 02. Jolz/ONSLAUGHT
Single Cracker   : 01. Deekay/Crest/ONSLAUGHT
Single Composer  : 04. Morbid/Bass/ONSLAUGHT

                         DIGITAL VOTESHEET
                         -----------------
Single Artists   : 01. Deekay/Crest/ONSLAUGHT
Single Fixers    : 01. Jolz/ONSLAUGHT

Maybe a good method to get own members into top ten
rankings, but only if the votesheet supplier (many
thanks to VIOLATOR) and votesheet counter sleeps.
This rather POOR attempt to manipulate the charts is
for sure a mirrow of today's situation in the scene.
It is even more SAD to see that this behaviour was
NOT shown for the first time from his side, the weak
excuses coming up might be the same.

The NEWS have been supplied and confirmed by
CURLIN, Iceball, CBA, NEWSCOPY, Macx, Jazzcat, KING
FISHER, Violator and all others who have been giving
a helping hand this time.

This edition's content looks like this:
------------------------------------------------------------
GLOBAL REPORT is the host for all who are looking
out for ALL necessary information about the scene
happenings. The RELEASE CHARTS and the 1996 RE-
LEASE CHARTS are proving an overview about the
releases of the previous decade and ofcourse all re-
leases of the year 1996. BOARD CHARTS and MAIL
CHARTS are the place to look up the actual standings
in the opinion of the board and mail scene, a mirror
who reflects the votes of people who filled vote-
sheets all over the globe and shared their results by
mail, e-mail and on the boards. The INTERVIEW has
been hold this time with a hitman called PEACEMAKER,
no one else but the # 1 fixer these days! The DEMO
REVIEW will have a closer look on productions crea-
ted by Lepsi Developments, Profik and Byterapers
this time. The PARTY RADAR presents useful informa-
tion about TRIBUTE '96, Demobit '96 and pre-informa-
tion about the Symposium '97. Finally the ADVERTISE-
MENTS will offer lots of addresses for different pur-
poses.

Global Report

                         * GLOBAL REPORT *
------------------------------------------------------------
Facts, facts, facts, ... Welcome to THE news journal
you can care about because WE do care about the
content.

The seek for proven information has found its end as
you have finally found your favourite and most RELI-
ABLE HOST around the globe in this lonely universe.
Fantasy stories, expections or own opinions about
the latest happenings in the world we use to live in
can be found in several wrong places, this is the pla-
ce for getting PURE information, prepared and
collected and proven by EXPERIENCED and QUALI-
FIED reporters, always hunting for the latest in the
CBM 64 scene, the place we still use to life in.

                      * ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 *
------------------------------------------------------------
This period many unexpected things happened within
the rows of the flight, most turned to become a happy
end but at the end the negative aspects can't be de-
nied.

POL POT brought some movement and some headlines
in this years' summer break. At first he left the flight
for the fantastics in order to leave the fantastics to
rejoin the flight some days later again to run HOLI-
DAY INN CAMBODIA as worldheadquarter for Afl and
Relax Magazine. Both US boards have new numbers,
please note them in case you haven't done it already.
ANTIDOTE will serve as scandinavian headquarter in
the future, shared by the swedish group TRIAD. Fur-
ther PERNET has been reactivated. The former Sac-
red member will serve as composer in the future.
Last but not least CALEDONIAN/U-Turn joined in to
support the mail trading division.

RAYDEN, who has joined the German army some days
ago, has left his second group Chalice in order to
concentrate his activities for one group only. Mean-
while XENOX decided to team with the Street Children
(a Polish groups lead by Flash/Afl) as double mem-
ber.
After being unactive for many months the English ba-
sed mail trader SHUZE and the German programmer
CRYONIC have been setted on the inactive list. After
the CYCLES affair CRYONIC got kicked out! Rather
unexpected the Dutch cracker and fixer REAM has
left the scene for good.

Current Alpha Flight memberstatus looks like (= 19):
Ancient Mariner, Archangel, Blaze, Caledonian, Calyp-
so, Chotaire, Danzig, Flash, Ignorance, Marc, Max,
Ned, Pol Pot, Rayden, Skinhead, Styx, The Heretic,
Xenox and Zapotek

                            * CHROMANCE *
------------------------------------------------------------
The Hungarians around Mr. Wax did again a solid job.
No scandals but a major clear up is what could be
detected in order to reduce the huge memberstatus.

With DRUID a former Chromance returned from his
trip to the now dead Avantgarde group, signing up as
double member in order to remain in his group AGONY
DESIGN, too. SPERMBIRD has left ACRISE&EXCESS in
order to remain in Chromance only. Some days later
RUG RAT returned from his sleep back to the active
status of the group, bringing back his board EDGE OF
MIDNIGHT online, which is now shared with ONSLAUGHT
and NETPHREAKERS, too. DEVIANT woke up aswell
and already started to call out again. The board he
has been running once, FINAL GENOCIDE, might re-
turn as independent board. HEAVYHEAD teamed up
from Onslaught, running with WESTPOINT now the Eu-
ropean headquarter for the Hungarian based group.
Their former member JEAN is back in active on this
8-bit system. His current attemp is to compile soft-
ware and information for a project entitled "C64
SCENE HISTORY CD", for sure a quite ambious pro-
ject. SYCO is said to be active again after being dis-
appeared and inactive for quite a while.
Nevertheless the Chromance posse did a major clean
up within their own rows, moving AMC, FUSION, HED-
GEHOG, IMMORTAL with his board OVERDOSE, LOTUS,
MEPHISTO, SAGE, TECHNO, VECTOR and ZEYEX to the
inactive memberlist.

Current Chromance memberstatus looks like (= 20):
Bolee, Deviant, Druid, Griff, Janee, Jaydee, Jazzy D,
Jean, Lion, Mr. Wax, Pete, Rug Rat, Scratcher, Skud,
Spermbird, Syco, Will, Wozio, XXL and Zar

              * FANTASTIC 4 CRACKING GROUP *
------------------------------------------------------------
F4CG has a wide spread spectrum of activities on
various systems such as PC/Amiga/Mac/Snes/PSX
next to the CBM 64 and brought some movement into
the notorious summer hole of the scene.

With DARKLORD, FREESTYLE and JACK DANIELS
further member of the dead group Avantgarde have
been assigned to the fantastics, but they will be kept
in the inactive status until coming up with useful va-
lues. DEFF is going to get more active in the next
and will provide titles in the fall of 1996. KING, the ol-
dest member of the group, returned on a limited basis
to the scene.
SIX FEET UNDER is the name of the FTP-site runned
by F4CG and to replace the INTERPARK which had to
be taken down (Relax reported about it in the pre-
vious edition). The concept is quite different from the
bright mass of other FTP-sites, containing only three
directories, for 0-7, 7-30 old warez and for Propa-
ganda.

The attempt to overtake the most prestigeful CBM 64
board left in the scene, HOLIDAY INN CAMBODIA, has
failed. After being a member of F4CG for some days
POL POT decided to return to the flight and to avoid
future hazzle, so F4CG status still remains without a
board.

Current F4CG memberstatus looks like (= 31):
Antitrack, Aristo, Bitman, Chash, Cupid, Cybersurfer,
Cyborg, Deff, Devil, Draz, Fen 1, Hain, Intruder, Jack
Alien, King, Maja, Morris, Motley, Mr. Alpha, Neotec,
Newscopy, Playboy, Renegade, Scorpie, Sixx, Sma-
sher, Sneaper, Solar, Total Chaos, Walker and Worm

                                * HITMEN *
------------------------------------------------------------
Hitmen set up a world record when it comes up to the
amount of tollfree numbers for a single board at the
same time. Furthermore some useful and prominent
names have been added to strengthen the crew.

In their quest to re-activate prominent old scene
personalities Hitmen proudly announced the member-
ship of BURN and SEVEN. In case you haven't heard
of these handles before, hiding behind them are THO-
MAS KONCINA and BJOERN ODENDAHL from DIGITAL
EXCESS, the well known game label.
Seven explained in channel # c-64 that DXS will for
sure restart the production of CBM 64 software
what belongs to the more POSITIVE news these days.
With MOONCHILD one of the best crackers around
these days has been added, aswell as DIVERSE, who
joined in as graphic artist, both coming from FAIR-
LIGHT Poland. Last but not least RAMMY/ex-Feniks is
supposed to support the mail trading division.
With GANGTA'S PARADISE an Internet Distribution Site
has been added to the list, for sure one of the better
addresses when it comes up to actual CBM 64 warez
in the Net.

Current Hitmen memberstatus looks like (= 25):
Balance, Banshee, Burn, Curlin, Diverse, Groepaz, Hi
Lite, Jayce, Jihad, Jinx, Luke, Marcus, Moonchild, Mo-
tion, Peacemaker, Racoon, Rammy, Raze, Sabotage,

                               * MOTIV 8 *
------------------------------------------------------------
The group with the biggest amount of releases, but
not with the most points, in 1996. The usual business
in here.

MISERY has returned to the CBM 64 scene after a
five years trip through the Amiga world, being in-
troduced by as former member of Skid Row (Amiga)
and groups like Crazy, X-Ray, bones and Vision on
the CBM 64. His destination is to serve the motivated
as graphic artist and mail trader. Out of the land of
the free (?) DUNGEON MASTER got recruited as gra-
phic artist, coder and fixer, remaining in ZONE II as
first group. MHD, who was heading for an Amiga ca-
reer last month, fortunately changed his mind and
decided to continue working on this machine. Toge-
ther with LYON and RIME they can now concentrate
on the motivated ones only as their group Polish ba-
sed group FENIKS died. To follow the trend NUKE has
left his second group XL.C.US, too. After being inac-
tive for quite a while, BINJINX is said to be active and
and calling out again.

After being inactive things months, not to say years,
STONE made his departure from the CBM 64 officially
and will continue his Amiga career in the group RIOT
he joined as trader lately. L.A. Style, who is said to
be caught for selling PC games, has left the scene.

Current Motiv 8 memberstatus looks like (= 22):
BinJinx, Bird, Clive, Crossfire, Dungeon Master, Eddie
Greenfrog, Grego, Ibanez, Iceball, Larry, Lion, Mason

                            * ONSLAUGHT *
------------------------------------------------------------
Many groups have been a little bit inactive in the
summer of '96, and Onslaught doesn't make an excep-
tion here.

With REMARQUE joining on trial another member of
Ambush found his way to the Australian based group,
being a programmer and music composer. While sha-
ring now EDGE OF MIDNIGHT along with Chromance
and Netphreakers another board got added to their
list.

According to Jazzcat HEAVYHEAD has been kicked
out of the group for causing disruption within the
group and for being unactive while Heavyhead has
been spotted looking out for a new group before this
got announced. He teamed up with the Chromance
posse.

Current Onslaught memberstatus looks like (= 34):
ASV, Bizarre, B-Wyze, Communist, Deekay, Digahole,
Donar, Doom, Gop, Grafee, Grize, Hardsequencer,
Heavyhead, Jazzcat, Jolz, Kinley, Macx, McByte, Meff,

            * SUCCESS & THE RULING COMPANY *
------------------------------------------------------------
Being in the usual summer vacation not much action
was caused by the ruling cooperation. Anyway, some
headlines are for sure worth being mentioned.

After being inactive for quite a while GAZZA returned
to the scene, maintaining the official TRC&SCS home-
page being located in Austria. Rumours about the
magazine FRONTPAGE returning have been proved to
be wrong. CBA explained that the Frontpage project
died with issue 28, further editions are NOT planned.

Current SCS&TRC memberstatus looks like (= 20):
Action Jackson, Alchemist, Allitaice, Bacillus, Burglar,
CBA, Count Zero, Credo, El Banditos, Funxilla, Lord
Crucifier, Micron, Moren, Nightshade, Replay, Specta-

                                 * TRIAD *
------------------------------------------------------------
Actually Triad is in the headlines of the media, not
only of the scene press, but it has nothing to do with
their scene activities. KF described it as "15 minutes
of fame", refering to Andy Warhol's statement made
years ago.

Memberwise ACIDCHILD, former swapper of Taboo,
joined to serve as mail trader. PANTHALOON left his
group Noice in order to get active as coder here.

On September 19th, 1996 the CIA homepage got hak-
ked and altered by a Swedish hacker. Links were
made to the Triad homepage and to King Fisher's un-
derground library including protocols of the Swedish
Hacker Association. CNN and other online newspa-
pers aswell as the Swedish media accused KF for ha-
ving performed the hack, like the serious Swedish
SVENSKA DAGBLADET. Against all rumours KF denied
being resposinble for it.
After the great media hype towards a CBM 64 group
in history the Triad homepage has been taken down
and will be re-opened using a different URL to pre-
vent any kind of hysteria.

Current Triad memberstatus looks like (= 17):
Acidchild, Ca$h, Dr. Disk, Disaster, Father Dagon, Io-
pop, Jerry, King Fisher, Mr. Ammo, Panthaloon, Quor-
thon, Sailor, Tao, Taper, The Meatball, Twoflower and
Violator

                * SINGLE NEWS AND RUMOURS *
------------------------------------------------------------
* OXYRON finally set up a WWW homepage, maintained
by Dante, RRR and TTS. The URL is:
                        http://www.amigasupport.com/oxyron

* SIDE B, the music label formed once by AMJ, Page
and TBB, seems to be back in full effect again. AMJ
composed some tracks which were presented in
BYTERAPERS' demo contribution and in the music
competition of the ASSEMBLY 1996. TBB won this
competition and did the soundtrack for Extend's
Amiga contribution. Their latest member ZARDAX,
who will remain in ORIGO DREAMLINE as his scene
group, did compete aswell and is rather active late-
ly. It seems more and more former scene related
   persons find their way home.
The active part of the brotherhood, AMJ, TBB and
Zardax, teamed up with the music label CyberZound
Productions, remaining in Side B and their scene
groups next to the CZP membership.

Current Side B memberstatus looks like (= 4):
   AMJ, Page, TBB and Zardax

* AMBUSH DESIGN morphed from a demo group into a
pure game label. Their ambitious plans are to pro-
vide the CBM 64 community with big titles and ma-
jor releases like WORMS 64 or LABYRINTH 3D in-
stead of puzzle games. To reach this aim they are
still looking for people working on freelance basis.
The men behind this label are CALEDONIAN, MACX
   and VIOLATOR.

* The cooperation between ACRISE & EXCESS splitted
so the lately recruited members STORMFRONT and
GOTHIC aswell as BORDEAUX and MENDRAKE are in
Acrise right now, the rest remains in Excess.

* Flag 96 (July 19th to 22nd) results:

Release Charts

The Official Release Charts for the Relax Magazine
------------------------------------------------------------

Performed by the MASTER OF LAW...

                                    MARC

Before the start over with general explainations for
these release charts we want to introduce our very
own point system:

Fullprice Games 6.1 - 8.0 points
Budget Eames 4.1 - 6.0 points
Low Budget 2.1 - 4.0 points
PD/Shareware 1.0 - 2.0 points
Previews 0.0 - 1.0 points

One bonus point can be gained by releasing a 100% (!)
working PAL/NTSC version. When a second group got
involved with the NTSC fix the points will be shared.

Games which were already PAL released have to be
fixed uithin 6 months after the official PAL release
otherwise no points will be given for the NTSC fix.

Minus points will be given for...
-----------------------
Re-releases -7.0
Re-release of a preview -1.0
No levelpacking -0.5/ - 1.0
No trainer(s) -0.5/ - 1.0
No translation -1.0/ -2.0

Unlike most other magazines we won't give points for
tools. Those releases will get mentioned but that's all
about them.

SEUCK GAMES, BASIC GAMES, COMPILED BASIC
GAMES and such games that were done using a GAME
MAKER will be ignored.

Whenever we think somebody did something special
or something outstanding we will add one point to the
normal amount of points.
It is also possible to get one extra point for some-
thing that normally doesn't deserve any points.

The following boards have been taken in to conside-
ration uhilst creating these charts...

Holiday Inn Cambodia XXX-XXX-XXXX
----------------- ------------
The Dungeon XXX-XXX-XXXX
---------- ------------
Dead Zone XXX-XXX-XXXX
-------- ------------
The Evil Island XXX-XXX-XXXX
------------ ------------
The Bass Planet XXX-XXX-XXXX
-------------- -------------
Edge of Midnight XXX-XXX-XXXX
-------------- --------------

And here we go...

                 * ACRISE + EXCESS (0.5 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The cooperation released only a little preview
called ROBOTRONIX (0.5 pts).

               * ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 (9.3 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The German pride started with the fixed versions of
DENIFFIA (5.0 pts), CATCH ME (3.6 pts) and THE
DUEL (6.5 pts) the sales version, a Budget Game from
Paradise Software. Followed by the previews of KILL
YOUR BRAIN (0.3 pts), SCORPION (0.3 pts) in cooper-
ation with Hitmen and HANGMAN DELUXE (0.5 pts) and
a fixed version of the useful tool called MULTI-INTER-
LACE EDITOR (0.0 pts) from XLCUS. CYCLES (-7 p.)
was declared to be a re-release due to certain si-
multaries to the oldie game SPEED KING.

                      * CHROMANCE (14.4 pts)
------------------------------------------------------------
They started with the previews of YABA (0.4 pts),
OPERATION PROBOSZCZ (0.0 pts), MEGABRAIN V2
(0.5 pts), ANASTHASIA (0.8 pts), MANGANOID V2
(0.6 pts) and the fixed versions of YABA (3.4 pts)
from Eagleware Int. and the Hungarian fullprice game
BOOM (8.7 pts) from 576 KByte, I gave one extra
point for the translation.

                          * F4CG (6.7 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
Gaining fresh power from the former Avantgarde
members they released the preview of INSANITY 2
(0.4 pts) and the fixed version of NODULE (2.5 pts),
minus one point because choosing the "NO SPRITE
COLLOSION" option in the trainer menu makes it pos-
sible to ran into the background what DESTROYS the
gameplay. Last but not least UPSIDE DOWN (3.8 pts)
from LK Avalon found its way to the boards, a game
coded by Fatum, and again minus one point because
the game doesn't work on NTSC computers!

                        * HITMEN (13.2 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The German based group released the previews of
PIPEMANIA (0.6 pts), SCORPION (0.3 pts) and KILL
YOUR BRAIN (0.3), which both released in coopera-
tion with Alpha Flight 1970. More is coming up with the
fixed versions of DUMI 100% (3.4 pts), FIELDS 100%
(3.6 pts), PUXXLE (4.0 pts) and PADDLES (1.0) fixed
for Motiv 8.

                         * Laxity (0.4 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
Only a little preview hit the boards called WORDS
DON'T CARE (0.4 pts).

                        * MOTIV 8 (2.4 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
Their wares rush started with CIRCUITRY V1.1 (0.0),
INFARED II (0.0 pts), PSYCLOID (0.0 pts), VEIL OF
TIERS (0.0 pts), PENTRON (0.0 pts) and HAMMER
(0.0 pts), all games are in BASIC so no POINTS could
be given here. The rush got continued with the pre-
view of POPQUIZ (0.3 pts) and the game PADDLES
(2.1 pts) NTSC fixed by Peacemaker of Hitmen.

                     * ONSLAUGHT (7.6 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
They released the fixed version of CENTRIC (6.6 pts)
but MINUS one point because a second version was
necessary, and the previews of LEO 2 (0.8 pts) and
HELLDIVER (0.2 pts).

                  * SUCCESS & TRC (0.4 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The dutch cooperation released only the preview of
CUBE HEADS (0.4 pts).

Merged in to a table it looks like this:

Yearly Releases

         * THE OFFICIAL 1996 RElEASE CHARTS *
------------------------------------------------------------
Feel welcomed to the chapter taking care about the
releases made in 1996, being filled with statistics
about the first release competition in 1996.

Infact the idea behind this chapter is not that new
but it's definately very informative and helpful for all
persons who are interested in detailed information
about the releases in 1996 as it will contain game tit-
les, fixing or cooperating groups, the points and the
status (PAL: PAL only, PAL/NTSC: game was already
PAL/NTSC compatible and FIX: NTSC (PAL) fix in-
stalled).
This overview might be a useful documentation in or-
der to avoid re-releases, only to give a short exam-
ple. Furthermore it is the place to define your cur-
rent position, and ofcourse the position of the con-
curence who are all heading for the crown at the end
of 1996.

The rules that this charts are following can be found
in the Release Charts chapter.

Board Charts

                      * THE BOARD CHARTS *
------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to your probably most favourite chapter,
the charts. The Relax is the only magazine so far
offering seperate board and mail charts in order to
show the charts from two different worlds in the be-
loved CBM 64 scene since modem traders do not have
the time or possibility to fill votesheets, otherwise
they would be called mail traders.

One of the most asked questions is what kind of votes
will be taken into consideration while counting these
charts. The answer is very simple. At first there are
voting booths on THE ESCAPADE in good old Europe
and on THE EVIL ISLAND in the United States of Ame-
rica. Furthermore it is possible to vote by sending
e-mail to Marc/Afl at an every elite board worldwide.
There exists the opportunity to vote via INTERNET,
too, by using our very own DIGITAL VOTESEEHT or
just by sending an e-mail containing your votes to
ZAPOTEK or RRR. Simple, isn't it?

These board charts are the fastest moving charts
due to the fact that there is no votesheet which tra-
vels weeks or months to reach its destination. All the
votes were made between the previous and this issue
so this is some kind of mirror of the activity of cer-
tain established and new groups.

Here we go.

                   * TOP TEN DEMO GROUPS *
------------------------------------------------------------
Rank Last Group Points
------------------------------------------------------------
01. (2) Byterapers 140
02. (1) Oxyron 136
03. (5) Crest 127
04. (4) Camelot 118
05. (3) Reflex 105
06. (7) Profik 88
07. (9) Triad 74
08. (6) Agony Design 50
09. (8) Taboo 36
10. (10) Smash Design 24

With the great success of Follow The Sign III the BY-
TERAPERS got the necessary support to took over
the leading position of the demo groups, followed by
OXYRON and the runner-up CREST.
Except for minor position changes nothing new here,
no new entries and no group left.

                   * TOP TEN SINGLE CODER *
------------------------------------------------------------
Rank Last Alias Points
------------------------------------------------------------
01. (2) Mr. Sex/Byterapers 145
02. (1) Graham/Oxyron 138
03. (3) Quiss/Reflex 64 (PC) 128
04. (5) Crossbow/Crest 114
05. (4) TTS/Oxyron 100
06. (10) MMS/Taboo 93
07. (7) Slammer/Camelot 75
08. (6) Fuben/Oxyron 62
09. (9) Druid/Agony Design 58
10. (10) Axis/Oxyron 39

Taking this months' success of his group into consi-
deration it's no suprise to see MR. SEX on the most
wanted throne, too, followed by GRAHAM and QUISS.
Some minor position changes on the following places,
so nothing is left really worth to be mentioned here.

SUCCESS & TRC at the top, ALPHA FLIGHT and F4CG
on the following positions are this months' favourites
according to the voters.
After being dead for quite a while right now, AVANT-
GARDE is starting to lose some ground, falling from
two to six this time, and no end is seight. No new en-
tries here, to be honest, who should enter here?

No doubts that IGNORANCE is for sure the worthy
leader in this cathegory, taking his releases during
the last year(s) into consideration. JACK ALIEN can
be found on rank two, followed by BURGLAR ranked
on three.
MOONCHILD entered at eight, for sure a good alter-
native to vote for. He replaced SKINHEAD who has
left the charts once again, but for how long? Next
time we will see! ;)

With CRUISE and CREEPER the two leading artists re-
main unchanged, followed by CARRION this time who
sent ELECTRIC "down" to four.
Nothing new in here except for DEEKAY moving into
direction top, and that even without cheap cheat at-
tempt from his Australian group mate. To avoid any
misunderstandings, he for sure deserves the points
he got and will get in the future.

PRI and PVCF remain unchanged in the top positions,
even if the race for the top spot is getting closer
and closer. SHOGOON qualified for position three,
sending SYNDROM "down" to four.
At the end good old METAL re-joined the charts,
sending COMPOD into the endless widths of nowhere,
to be more exact out of this top ten list.

HITMEN, ALPHA FLIGHT and SUCCESS & THE RULING
COMPANY are the well deserved leading teams in
here. AVANTGARDE is on the way down, but what to
expect from a dead group?
Where are the groups getting active to replace the
inactive American formations?

PEACEMAKER, BURGLAR and CBA are the favourite
trio of the voters this month. If you want to know
why Peacey became a fixer you should read the In-
terview chapter of this edition.
Finally, with JAYDEE a fresh face appeared here,
replacing the first one of the inactive Americans, this
time MERCENARY became the victim.

Mail Charts

                        * THE MAIL CHARTS *
------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to your probably most favourite chapter,
the charts. The charts are divided into two different
sections, the mail charts and the board charts. The
mail/charts are what people like to define as mega
charts consisting of the incoming Relax votesheets
and the charts of other magazines spread during the
last weeks.

To create the charts you are going to read here we
took the following charts of the following magazines
into consideration completed by the votes taking
part as top ten from the growing amount of incoming
normal and digital Relax votesheets:

Contrast 5/No Name JUNE 1996
Arachnophobia 1/Spiders JULY 1996
Skyhigh 21/Camelot JULY 1996
The Tribune 56/Angry JULY 1996
Mish Mash 2/independent AUGUST 1996
Palladium 1/Ascraeus AUGUST 1996
Vendetta 4/Eagleware Int. AUGUST 1996

If you disagree with the content of the following lines
we only can advice you to get your hands on all avail-
able votesheets and fill them to influence the charts
in the way you'd like to do it. Please do us a personal
favour and do not manipulate the charts while voting
for personal friends instead of supporting persons
who might deserve the vote.

10. (9) Nipson 10

The demo charts remain more or less unchanged, with
Oxyron, Reflex and Byterapers at the top. After re-
leasing the 100% version of FOLLOW THE SIGN III the
Byterapers have the best chances to take over the
top, no doubts, as the 75% preview version was ra-
ther impressive.
At the end the Hungarian based group Profik entered
and place Smash Design.

The top remains unchanged with Mr. Sex, Quiss and
Graham leading without any serious concurence in
seight. Mr. Sex defended the crown showing this skills
in the actual Byterapers demo, which is unfortunately
only at 75% by now.
At the end KM re-entered the charts due to his po-
pularity in Poland and the lots of Polish votesheets
while AEG disappeared again after a short visit in
the top ten.

It seems to be a question of time when the voters will
find out that Avantgarde is already dead since many
months. Avantgarde still leads the bunch, followed by
the ruling cooperation and the flight.
At the end Acrise & Excess re-entered the charts
by sending Atlantis back to the endless widths of
nowhere, to be more precise out of the top ten list.

ges, has happened here since months. Jack Alien as
the one who is leading the protection removers, fol-
lowed by Burglar and Hain.
ACTIVE quality crackers like Ignorance and Moon-

forced to leave the charts due to a lack of points
this time.

the bunch of SID manipulators, with PVCF and Syn-

At the end old legend Jeroen Tel qualified again, sen-
ding Zyron out of the top ten.

with most changes. Spermbird took over the crown
this time, followed by the former Avantgarde connec-
tion Intruder and Derbyshire Ram. Violator has been
the shooting star this time, coming from 0 to 5. It
seems the new swapper generation is on their way up
into direction top. Next to Violator El Banditos from
Poland qualified, a quite naturally effect since he is
spreading votesheets for almost all magazines. While
new mail traders qualifed ofcourse some had to leave
so this time Bizarre and Dr. Kaos have been the ones
but next month everything will look different again.

Interview

                             * INTERVIEW *
------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the interview chapter of the RELAX MA-
GAZINE, a section being frequently visited by the
leading profiles of the past and the present, persons
people talk about and people who are interesting for
the bright masses.

This time we invited Peacemaker of Hitmen, today's
number one fixer and a member of the community de-
fined as CBM 64 scene for many years. The interview
got held using our favourite media, the Internet.

Here we go.

?: Hello Rene. Feel welcomed in this months' talk show
of the Relax Magazine. As usual in the beginning, we
ask you introduce yourself to our readers with non-
computer related facts you are willing to share with
us and our readers here.

!: My real name is Rene, I am 1.82 m tall and my weight
is 67 kg. I was born in 1974, at October 27th. Besides
computer I am interested in music, mostly Dark-Wave,
EBM and Gothic, but I am also listening to other stuff
like Genesis (only the old CDs), Mike Oldfield, New Age
and so on... I am spending a lot of time with my girl-
friend VERENA (we are a couple for about six months
right now) and friends. Furthermore I am reading
books of authors like Edgar Wallace and J.R.R. Tol-
kien, and this is what I am doing else.

?: The next question is for sure to request facts
about your computer career, a career leading you
through a lot of top ten cracking groups. Please re-
port how it all started, how you got your handle(s)
and something about your groups you were a member
of from the very beginning until now.

!: I got my first computer in 1986 and started to play
some games like most others and did nothing. In 1987
I have joined my first group named THE FAMOUS FIVE
but later on I joined a local group called WARTEC.
choosing ZZIP as my handle. Together with a member
called ZZAP we did our first cracks of games like
APOLLO 18, EOA FLIGHT SIMULATOR and some more
titles. In 1988 some members of Wartec joined RED
SECTOR INC. [yeah, the real RSI :)], but I wasn't very
in this group. Ralf got an offer from ALPHA FLIGHT in
1989 and he also took me into this group, doing some
cracks for AFL was my job that time. In 1990 I left
AFL and joined the Dutch group WORLD WIDE EX-
PRESSIVE [hey Niels  :)] using the handle ANTIPLEX
but left the group soon again as there wasn't much
contact between me and the other group members. So
I joined ABSTRACT but got kicked out again. Guess I
was too inactive for the group as I lost the interest
in the CBM 64 at this point. In the year 1991 I found
my way back into the CBM 64 scene and formed my
own group together with some local friends. Its name
was VERTICAL and went into cooperation with HURRI-
CANE. We released some kewl cracks and a demo. I
left HCE for HITMEN (YEAH!) but unfortunately some
weeks later Hitmen died. This was leading to the fact
that some members of HCE and Hitmen built up a new
group called REBELS! I have been the leader of the
rebels but lost the interested in it one or two years
later and so I got removed from the memberlist but I
didn't really care about it. Around the end of 1992 I
called some boards under the handle PEACEMAKER,
and in 1993 I teamed up with CHROMANCE, left them
and joined VISION. At that time Vortex, Curlin, Racoon
and me got an offer from MOTIV 8 and so we joined
them, staying in Motiv 8 for around one year. In the
summer of 1994 (?) Marc/ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 asked
us to join and so we did again. In 1995, at the X-95,
Curlin and me wanted to stop our activities on the
CBM 64. But as you all know, we rebuilt HITMEN again
in summer 1995. That's about it. Maybe I mixed up
some dates or the order of appearance of the
groups.

?: What were your reasons to become a programmer
and fixer instead of becoming a graphic artist or mu-
sic composer or another useful job in the CBM 64
scene?

!: What a strange question. Why did you decide to be
an artist? :)

?: Simply based on the fact that the results, spending
20 minutes on Turbo-Assembler, Sound-Monitor and
PAINT MAGIC, in Paint Magic have been the most pro-
mising ones! ;) As you are the number one NTSC fixer
these days, what exactly keeps you motivated spen-
ding hours to force certain routines to run on both
CBM 64 systems?

!: I don't spend hours on routines. Maybe I did so in
the beginning of my fixing career. Today I am fixing
games JUST FOR FUN!

?: Next to the CBM 64, is there another computer
system which meets your interest and what you are
going to use on a steady basis for any activities?

!: Well, I would love to have a PC to call the Internet. :)
But when it comes up to scene activities, there is no
other system I am active on.

?: Being a member of Alpha Flight 1970, for sure be-
longing to the top addresses of the cracking scene,
what lead you exactly to re-build Hitmen and to start
over once again at a level where you have to re-
built the structures and the organisation in order to
compete with the rest of the world?

!: You can see the result! :) Hmmmh.... Hitmen is just a
group we have a lot of fun in. We all share the same
attitude towards our interests. We have a lot of cool
meetings and we are much more than just these
"computer-friends".

?: To have a closer look at your current group Hit-
men, can you report anything about its history, the
members and the future plans of the group?

!: I think I already answered a part in the previous
question. Our future plans? Ofcourse having fun,
meetings, and some releases like cracks and demos.
Along with TYRON, CURLIN, MOONCHILD, VORTEX, JINX
and me we have the best lowres artist, organizer,
cracker, phreakers and fixer around. But not to
forget the other memberes of Hitmen doing their part
to the success of the group very well. I just don't
want to mention all the names here. :)

?: Next to the usual illegal business with cracking and
fixing Hitmen surprised the masses with the release
of a nice demo at the X-96 and by recruiting mem-
bers for a demo section. What lead Hitmen to get ac-
tive here and what can we expect in the future?

!: It was done just for fun and to show the quality of
the routines from our coders [heya GROEPY, lazy
ass  :)]. CUCUMBER JUICE II will be released in late
December. Is that enough? :)

?: Your board MYSTICAL PARADISE, EHQ for Hitmen
and SCS & TRC, is quite popular these days, always
having a nice amount of callers from all over the
world. What do you think makes it so special to at-
tract the callers?

!: So special? Ha! The tollfree numbers fro example?
:) But also the great board graphics and the fresh
warez for the hungry crowd... And not to forgot the
service! :)

?: Yeah, the tollfree numbers in five (!) countries are
for sure GREAT, but where is the need of it when the
board's line is always busy? ;) Computer parties are
always an interesting event to meet up with your
scene friends and to have a good time there. What
parties have you visited so far, what were the best
ones in your opinion and what events might be inte-
resting for you to be visited in the future?

!: I haven't been on much parties all over the years. I
visited some of the notorious Venlo meetings, the
Frechen party and two RADWAR parties. I LOVED the
X-95 and X-96 parties, meeting all the SPANKERS
there and having a lot of fun. Hopefully there will be a
X-97 party!

?: The Internet is getting a more and more important
factor in scene life, as there is the IRC and e-mail
service for communication, the WWW for information
and the FTP-sites for file transfers. What is your
honest opinion about it? Do you see it as advantage
or disadvantage for the scene life style?

!: I like the Internet. It is great to leech the new stuff
with 14k4 and chatting with other people, surfing on
the pages and reading there some interesting stuff.
I want to have an own account with a tollfree number!
:)

?: Nowadays Chromance and Hitmen share the popu-
lar FTP-site Gangsta's Paradise. Will Hitmen, after
this first step, enlarge their activities here, e.g. by
setting up an own homepage?

!: Yeah, soon we will have our own homepage, created
and maintained by SEVEN of Hitmen. I have already
seen a preview and it is very promising.

?: As you are a member of the scene community for
quite a while, too, what are the major changes you've
recognized all over the years? What do you miss or
does today's situation have positive aspects, too?

!: What do I miss? ALL the old and great games such
as the LAST NINJA series, DEFENDER OF THE CROWN
PIRATES, etc... Nowadays most games really suck, on-
ly some games are really worth being played. The de-
mos are kewl (Byterapers Inc.) but I am missing some
old effects like technical stuff (sideborder, multiple-
xer). Furthermore there are too many 4X4 or even
1X1 plasma-colour routines, most of them do really
look AWFUL. I have seen a SHAPE demo some months
ago, and that one was a kicker. Someone may send me
this demo again as my copy was unfortunately cor-
rupt.

?: As everything has to come to an end we unfortu-
nately have to stop here, too. Here we offer our in-
terview partners to add some comments and gree-
tings, feel free to add whatever you would like to add
here. Many thanks for being our guest.

!: Thanks for the interview Timo! So, what about some
greetings? Let's start with all HITMEN members, Marc
Max, CBA, Nightshade, Burglar, Moren, Deff, Crossfire
Ignorance, Mr. Wax, Solar, Zyron, Sledge, Alchemist,
Pol Pot, Suicide, Weasel, Jack Alien, Splatterhead,
Bird, Mason, Tricket, Lawnmover Man, Ancient Mariner
Rug Rat, Scratcher, Chaotic, Iphigenie (!) and so on.
See ya on the boards and have fun! And don't take
the CBM 64 scene too serious [Heya [O] :)].

So much about Peacemaker and the interview section
for this time. Be sure to re-load this chapter in the
next edition to read all we could squeeze out of our
new victim, for sure worth being read, too.

Best regards,

Demo Reviews

                          * DEMO REVIEWS *
------------------------------------------------------------
The DEMO SEASON continued and some interesting
productions have shown that the scene returned
more or less from the well deserved summer break.

The season continued with day 4, the Flag 1996 held
in Hungary. Here PROFIK (extended review follows),
COMA and REPLAY INC. have been the ambassadors
of the CBM 64 demo industry. Coma provided an inte-
resting trackmo while Replay Inc. came up with a den-
tro, which was nothing special to rock the scene.
The fifth day of the season took place in Finland, to
be more precise at the ASSEMBLY 1996 in Helsinki.
Almost all entries have hold a high quality level and,
as usual, used the popular trackmo concept to show
that the CBM 64 can still compete, taking the techni-
cal disadvantages into consideration, with the other
machines, atleast when it comes up to the quality of
the routines. BYTERAPERS (extended review follows)
have been the well deserved winners with "FOLLOW
THE SIGN III", followed by an impressing code related
demo from the alltime legends of BEYOND FORCE en-
titled "NOTHING BUT CODE", an intelligent and fitting
name to define the content of the provided demon-
stration. On position three we found PANIC with their
greengrocer's commercial "FRUITS", sending WRATH
DESIGNS' "STUPIDITY III" on four, a general nice de-
signed chill-mo, as they use to advertise their demo
productions. At least, on position five, we found the
runner-ups of the last season, REFLEX with the
presentation of "DRUG SIXTYFOUR", proving the fact
that the second season will get much harder for them
as rising seems to be easy while to establish is MUCH
harder.
During day three and five there have been some re-
leases during the tournaments, better known as com-
petitions, from LEPSI DEVELOPMENTS, who came up
with the trackmo "1996" (extended review follows)
the dentro "BORN TO BE WILD", all in all an acceptable
production from the Polish based team.
TRIAD praised their production "MINDEXE" to be an
innovation. Infact this demo is the first of this kind on
this 8-bitter, but taking a took closer at it we found
the conception and even the texts inside adapted
from the MELONstration "Mind", an original AMIGA
production from the innovators of original demos,
MELON DESIGN. Nevertheless it's a FINE CBM 64 con-
versation, maybe bringing fresh winds into the demo
scene.
At the AntIQ'96, which did not become a day of the of-
ficial demo season due to the fact that less than at-
least three demo productions got released, RESOUR-
CE came up with a nice dentro named "Inhumanity III".
OXYRON, or to be more precise Fuben, released a
demo entitled ReLIGHTening, which became unfortuna-
tely NO relightening. The expectations were quite high
and the single components belong to the upper class,
nevertheless the entire PRESENTATION was not
exactly what you can demand from the leading demo
factory these days, as some fade in and out effects
shouldn't be too hard to be realised correctly by a
coder with top ten ambitions. Once again, things can
only get better, as the days of the classical "press
space to continue" demos are already history!
Finally day six, the Intel Outside 3 party held in Po-
land, brought with Extacy from SAMAR and Black Hole
from LEPSI DEVELOPMENTS two nice productions,
while position three has not been spread yet.

More to come is promised, taking in mind that the DE-
MOBIT (check PARTY RADAR for further details), the
TRIBUTE and THE PARTY SIX will open their gates to
welcome the contributors for further competitions.

                   1996/LEPSI DEVELOPMENTS
------------------------------------------------------------
Lepsi Developments belongs to the positive surprises
in 1996 because they are proving the scene with lots
of releases, may it be trackmos, dentros, games, slide
shows or music collections. The productions are not
at high level, but with an every production you see
them developing and getting better step by step.

                      Fuben about the coding:
                      --------------------
This trackmo got mainly coded by Zielok with some
additional coding by Nop, RB, Mr. Ballon, Sebaloz &
Smaller.

After the usual introduction (logo, presents, name,...)
the first effect appears. They call it an FLI-plasma,
which is nothing else than a modificated plasma-
scroller (like that in Triiod 2/HIS). The main idea co-
mes from RAZ/Camelot with his plasma-part in Camel
park. However, this effect looks quite ugly in my eyes!
The next part features an Elastic-Cyber-Line (you
remember GRAHAM's part in Coma Light VIII?). This
effect looks quite nice but is nothing special at the
coding-side.
A globe appears in the 4 by 4 mode. This routine is
not just slow, it even looks precalculated as the
animation repeats quite often. The texture looks quite
weird, so the whole part. After that, an x-y-distorter
comes up. It uses the same ugly texture from the
globe-part. Evenso, this effect doesn't look bad!
Later, an interference-effect comes up (oh, I hate
these lame interference-parts... I don't know why
people still code such old effects again and again?).
It's in Hi-Res and maybe 18x16 chars big. Anyway, this
one really looks strange.
A so called '3D-Chessboard' comes up next. It's no-
thing else than the first effect (plasma-scroller).
The next part is something new I haven't seen before.
It's a fader-effect shown with a picture. It is just five
minutes of coding and isn't anything special. This part
would fit to a fade-off effect for a picture but not as
a part, which is shown that long. It's just boring.
Some Cyber-Line-Vectors follow, which run in 1 frame
(except the hidden-lined cube, which runs in 1-2
frames). I already have seen better Cyber-Vectors
(see Camel Park/CML), but I like this part, though.
After some greetings that plasma-scroller part
comes up again (looking a bit different of course).
The next effect is a shade-bob moving over a bitmap-
picture, which is faded off mostly. I already have seen
this effect before. Furthermore it's nothing im-
pressive.
The last effect is a rot-zoomer (with ugly 16x16 tex-
tures) in 8x8. This effect was seen in several demos
before (often in 4x4... see 4 Years Oxyron)!

This demo is definetely too long, which results a lack
of action. Furthermore there a lot of crap-routines,
which are just boring. My rating is just 32%!

                      RRR about the artwork:
                      --------------------
Responsible for the artwork in this production are
Csezso, Sebaloz, Stone, Valsary and Worm.

The show starts with an average Lepsi multicolour
bitmap logo, followed by a poor 1996 singlecolour hi-
res logo. Next in the row is a singlecolour hires pic-
ture of a man wearing glasses which gets later on
updated and you can see a nude girl in his face. The
idea and realisation is quite nice done. A crying boy
is what we can see now, again in singlecolour hires.
Taking the disadvantages of this mode into conside-
ration it's quite okay done. A Lepsi logo in super hi-
res mode is the next piece of art, quite good taking
the other graphics into consideration. Some multico-
lour bitmap art is coming up, a fullscreen Lepsi logo
which is again nothing very special at all. Following is
a very good singlecolour hires picture of a girl, sho-
wing her face and lots of other elements which fit
quite good in the picture. To avoid getting it boring a
multicolour bitmap logo appears on the screen, pre-
senting the group's name Lepsi at an average level.
Next in the row is a fullscreen multicolour bitmap pic-
ture showing a face being surrounded by some kind
of fx which seems to be again nothing special at all.
With the picture of a vampire, as it is described in the
credits, in fli format a very interesting picture found
its way to the screen, using some well mixed colours.
This demo is going to end with two more logos, both
in multicolour bitmap. The first offers very interes-
ting outlines and an average filling while the second
is what we use to define as STANDART logo these
days, both ofcourse saying Lepsi.

Lots of graphics but unfortunately mainly quantity
instead of quality is the impression you get while
watching this trackmo. Only a 57% in my eyes.

                    PRI about the soundtrack:
                    ----------------------
The soundtrack for 1996 has been arranged by Bax,
Shy and Gregfeel.

It falls into four tunes: I guess the first one is suppo-
sed to be some kind of techno like many other boring
soundtracks these days, but only because of a bass
drum on all fourths? NO, there's more than that. This
tune rather sounds like disco sound of the golden
eighties to me. Regrettably the bass drum also falls
into the cathegory "UUNNNGG". There are some dif-
ferent moods, and the instruments are just average,
partly because of the lousy hardrestart... and that
low noise sounds as if you were searching a new sta-
tion on the radio tuner! The second tune is quite si-
milar to the first one, but then - "Surprise, wake up!"
says the third one. A different feeling, also powerful,
but at one point it doesn't really seem to be in-time
(?). The last one features some sync stuff, quite
okay... And of this kind is the entire soundtrack, no
big surprises, but acceptable.

Rating: 57%

                     FATAL (T)ERROR/PROFIK
------------------------------------------------------------
Profik status remains as mysterious but skilled new-
comer in the demo business. The identities of certain
"secret" members are already known while others
still remain undiscovered in the endless widths of the

                      Fuben about the coding:
                      --------------------
This trackmo, coded by Profi 1 and Profi 1.5, was
presented on the Flag'96 party in Budapest/Hungary
Before I start with the coding review you should know
that I'll just mention the real effects and NO loader-
parts.

So, the intro starts with the credits scrolling over
the screen. Then there is a swabbling Profik logo
scrolling over the full-screen in the 4x4-mode. This
effect doesn't look bad!
The first real effect is a PHONG TORUS in 4x4-mode.
This TORUS is rotating QUITE FAST, but what a pity it
does NOT run in REALTIME. This phong-shader is
mostly PRECALCULATED! So, I can proudly say that I
coded the first realtime phong shade routine on C64.
The next part is another torus, which is just texture
mapped. This TORUS surely use the same technic like
the PHONG TORUS, so it isn't realtime calculated, too!
Next coming up is a ZOOMER on 2x2 multicolor (4
colors), which is distorted on the X-axis additionally.
Looking to the high resolution, this routine seems to
be FAST enough. Evenso, I like MR. SEX' distorter in
'Follow the sign 3' more.
The next effect is a GOURAUD SHADER which includes
SPACE CUTTING. This routine is rather fast thinking
about the space cut. By the way, the mode is of
course 4x4...
The next part is a TEXTURED GLOBE, which is rota-
ting in 4x4-mode again.
The end part is in eyes the most IMPRESSIVE part.
Two INTERLACED BITMAP GLENZ CUBES rotate on the
screen. Over the bitmaps there is sprite matrix for
displaying some text. The power of that vector is
really AMAZING. This is for sure one of the fastest
bitmap-vectors ever on C64.

All in all this trackmo seems to be Profik's best demo.
Even the end part really rules, there is a lack of new
ideas and inventions.
My rating: 83%

                      RRR about the artwork:
                      --------------------
As usual it is Profi 2 being responsible for the visu-
als in this production.

The FATAL TERROR logo in multicolour bitmap shows
some cool ideas which are unfortunately average
realised only. A fullscreen picture is coming up, a FLI
conversation of RWO's (now in Balance on the Amiga)
eye. The picture is quite good, used good colour com-
bination and is really worth to look at. An average
Profik logo in 3 colours follows, resolution 160X200,
not special at all. Finally there is another PROFIK
multicolour bitmap logo looking up, being average
realised.

As usual this productions lacks of graphics, the few
which were presented are located between average
and good, so the rating is at 64%.

                    PRI about the soundtrack:
                    ----------------------
Unfortunately this productions FAILS to work cor-
rectly on any of my configurations, software failures
appear after the intro of copies running perfectly
on either Fuben's and RRR's machine(s), so NO review
from me is possible here. :(

Rating: ./.

FOLLOW THE SIGN 3 (UNSOUND MINDS)/BYTERAPERS
------------------------------------------------------------
Whenver an Assembly party has been advertised the
Finnish demo group Byterapers waked up in order to
perform another well designed coding masterpiece
called trackmo. Belonging to the absolute top demo
groups these days Byterapers don't really need a
further introduction here.

                      Fuben about the coding:
                      --------------------
This winning demo of the Assembly'96 is entirely (?)
coded by Mr.Sex.

It starts up with a tunnel effect (which seems to have
a relief) in the 4x4 dither mode. This effect looks a
bit weird, maybe because of the dithering mode and
the horizontal lacing.
Anyway, the fullscreen COLOURPLASMA following is in
the 4x4 mode, too (actually 8x4 as 2 colors are
combined to a 136-color-combination)! The speed of
this routine is quite REMARKABLE. Furthermore this
plasma is quite colorfull and all in all it just looks
GREAT.
The next effect is sort of a ROTATING GLOBE, which
stands in relation to its background. The idea of this
effect is coming from the AMIGA demo 'LOVE' by
VIRTUAL DREAMS. However, Mr. Sex uses again the
fullscreen 4x4 mode again!
Next coming is some kind of SWIRL-ROTATOR (full-
screen) on 8x8 (?). But I'm not sure what this effect
actually has to be! Anyway, it doesn't look bad...
Later a VOXEL comes up. this one is running on 8x4
with 136 colors. This routine is running quite fast but
I am not sure if there's a view-point included in the
routine.
After that, there is a flexible X-Y-DISTORTER in the
4x4 dither mode. I would say that the speed of this
routine is quite O.K. as I know how complicated it is
to realise distorters like this.
The next effect is a SWIRL-ROTATOR combined with a
colour plasma on 8x8 with some $D016-modifications
in the main routine (I think this kind of displaying a
screen is new, but I doubt it looks cool).
The next routine is a RELIEF BUMP effect on 8x8
(laced). The relief texture is additionally moved
around the screen. I've coded the same effect in my
latest demo 'ReLIGHTening'. Unluckily Mr.Sex released
his routine 2 weeks before I released mine. Shit
happens!
However, a zoomed swirl-rotator on 4x4 comes up...
I think this routine is looking quite ugly, but that just
my opinion.
Finally the disk has to be turned around.
The next effect suddenly touches the screen. It's a
quite cool Amiga invention already seen in many Amiga
demos (e.g. 'Brain-state-in-a-box' by Cryptoburners
in 1994). This routine is my absolute favourite in the
whole demo. I already planed a long time to code this
effect, but never did. Now Mr.Sex finally released it.
This effect is actually nothing else than a rotzoom-
routine with a changing texture. But it looks quite
like a feedback fractal. Anyway, this routine is in
fact very fast. I'm sure there's a nice trick behind.
By the way, this routine is running on 4x4 with those
strange $D016-modifications. But all in all a quite im-
pressive part!
The next part is another Amiga invention first seen
in Artwork's THE GATE. A bump-tube running in 4x4-
dithering. I like this part, as it look quite nice!
The next part was seen in other demos, too...A color-
full (136 cols) 8x4 (laced) effect, which I don't know
how to call!
The last effect in my 75% version is a bumped globe
(quite nice idea!!!) rotating in the 4x4-mode.

Well, a quite well-polished demo with some design, too!
The most routines are quite fast even some of them
are rather boring in my eyes. The trackmo-system
(loader & depacker) seems to be quite cool.
My rating: 90%.

                      RRR about the artwork:
                      --------------------
Responsible for the artwork are, due to my knowled-
ge, Mike and Jate.

The optimal illusion starts with an average multicolour
bitmap logo presenting the groups' name, followed by
an "Unbound Minds" multlicolour bitmap logo, which is
very interesting regarding form and style. With Mike's
competition picture "Entwinded" the first IFLI picture
comes up, being quite detailed with lots of different
elements such as tentacles, a girl, etc... quite nice.
A multicolour bitmap picture showing a dragon spiting
fire is coming up, which looks simply unfinished and
only average. More multicolour bitmap art is presen-
ted, this time showing a Byterapers logo in some kind
of modern art style with interesting, but maybe not so
good fitting, colour combinations. Next in the row is
another multicolour bitmap, a really nice girl, well
realised and well choosen colours for a project like
this one. The next piece of art is a FTS 3 logo reali-
sed in three colours with two colours being used for
the letters and the filling and the third one to be the
contrast, a surrounding background colour. Last but
not least the second IFLI picture is coming up, a girl
with a sword, featuring well choosen colours and lots
of details people like me are looking for. Well done!

All in all quite nice graphics, some are only average,
so the objective rating is at 76% in my opinion.

                    PRI about the soundtrack:
                    ----------------------
The music for the entire demo was arranged by AMJ/
Side B/Topaz Beerline.

And it was well done - lots of different moods, the
changes perfectly synchronized with the screen ac-
tion, good instruments, .... especially the bass drum
doesn't have so much lows, that certain "UUNNNGGG"
effect I am slowly beginning to get sick off - very
good! AMJ turns out to be a real experimental lead
composer when it comes to doing crazy, sometimes
rough sounds - but then again calmer passages come
in, just to rise again to another peak. A real nice
mixture indeed. The filter and wave sequencing in this
tune is even the best I have ever heard so far. Also,
on the whole tune still the best of its style and one of
the best styles this year.

The well deserved rating can only be at 93% for this
masterpiece.

Party Radar

                          * PARTY RADAR *
------------------------------------------------------------
Invitations and party reports can usually be found
here. This time we present again invitations and pre-
information only, as none of our staff members tra-
velled to any party held in the previous two months.

The information prepared this time covers meetings
and parties which might be very interesting for our
potentional target group and will cover only the as-
pects which might be important for the CBM 64 sce-
ne and its members.

The TRIBUTE is for sure a pure CBM 64 party what
makes it very interesting for CBM 64 fanatics who
still can not believe in nor accept other computer
systems yet, computer systems who overtook the
CBM 64 in the commercial sector some LIGHTYEARS
ago. Nevertheless its doubtful if any other computer
scene will ever be able to survive for twelve years
with an almost unchanged configuration, a situation
which is absolutely impossible in the PC world where
each week newer and faster processors, graphic/
video and sound cards get introduced by an ever
growing industrial sector always demanding comple-
tely updated high end users.
The BlackBox SYMPOSIUM party series has the po-
tential to become the German equivalent to the THE
PARTY series in Denmark. This is exactly what Ger-
many, for sure still belonging to the leading countries
when it comes up to scene activities and quality pro-
ductions on all various (home) computer platforms,
needs as it is quite silent without a remarkable party
history, mainly depending on the strict software laws
and the fact of some police raids like at MCG's party
a long time ago.
The DEMOBIT could become a quite important meeting
for entire Eastern Europe, as the organisation and
invitation looks quite professional, featuring inte-
resting events and a quite big group of potentional
visitors from East Germany, Czech Republik, Poland,
Hungary and ofcourse Slovakia, who could be at-
tracted to show up there.

But instead of reading any further introduction text
have a look closer at the invitation texts prepared
from the ORGANISERS in order to meet your appro-
val and making you visit their planned events.

                              TRIBUTE 1996
                              -----------
arranged by F4CG and Propaganda Magazine
                          November 1st-3rd

Dear Sirs & Madams,

it has been an interesting period, planning one of the
most talked about, rumoured and awaited events to
take place on the Commodore 64.

The Tribute-concept was born in 1994. The idea was
that people from past and present would come toge-
ther and salute the Commodore 64, the scene and
the times we've all shared.

In November 1994, groups like Triad, FairLight, Xakk,
G*P, Avantgarde, F4CG, Censor, Oxyron and Byte-
rapers gathered to mention a few of people from a
a broad timeperspective. The reactions from the
party were several, most of them positive, but we
have altered things slightly this time to make things
more comfortable for the wide bunch.

The Commodore 64 has startled us, and continues to
startle. Even though, what we refer to the scene has
been a part of history since over 10 years back, we
will triumph new victories in amazing demos. Just to
think there are still games coming out in 1996 is
truely amazing.

That is why we want a Tribute. For those of you who
unfortunately had to leave us too early can meet up
and catch up with the past years. the active and pro-
productive ones will again get to meet, compete, enjoy
and socialize. We do so in spirit of the 64. We do so in
spirit of the scene that has created one of our
greatest memories to look back at when we grow old.
We do so, because this is, a part of our roots. Wel-
to your past.

Gothenburg, Sweden

Regards,

                the Tribute-association

                               Information
                               ---------
The party place will not be a school. We believe that
for spirit and fun socializing, a club is ideal. The par-
ty will be held in one of the most popular clubs in Go-
thenburg called WALKOVER. There will be a big
screen (Tribute 1994 still has the biggest screen on
a party to date), a bar, a pool table, blackjack and
roulette. The club is located 3 minutes walk from the
central station, on Kyrkogatan 33. There is a parking
house located very close to the club.

The party will open at 1800 on Friday evening and
close Sunday at 1500. Entrance to the party is SEK
200.

                             SYMPOSIUM'97
                             ------------
 * Polka Brothers * Lego * Phantasm * Cubic Team *
                    * Avena * Smash Designs *

After the great success of SYMPOSIUM'96 we offer
you the chance to visit Germany's best party again
and make it to one of the best parties during 97!

Here are the facts which reminds of SYMPOSIUM'96:
* A damned great laser show every night which burnt
   down your head

* Great RELEASES which reminds you of Sym96 for
years like "THE GATE" from Artwork.

* Most HELPFUL and friendly organisers who helped
carrying equipment, helped finding the supermar-
   ket and a lot more

* Party guests from all over the world (almost): like
Sweden, England, Spain, Hungary, Italy, France,
   Austria, Netherlands, Denmark

* VIRGILL's birthday party!

* The collection for the guy from Spain, who lived for
one week in his car infront of the hall

* CLEAN TOILETS!

* A lot of very funny competitions and quizes

* The sea competition, in which some dudes with all
their clothes jumped into the ice-cold water

* Competitions for Amiga, PC, Falcon, C64 and RiscPC

* About 700 PARTY-GUESTS who made the Sympo-
sium'96 to what it is now .... :

One of the most FRIENDLY and NICEST SCENE-PARTY
                                in EUROPE!

There were a lot of things more... but too many to
write them all down, just ask your friends who were
there... I am sure they will tell you about it!

"The Symposium was, to keep it short, the BEST party
I have ever been to."
            RokDaZone, published in GENERATION 21

"No doubt, my place is on Symposium'96!"
Lord of ABS/IMS/CJ, published on AMINET

"Just repeat all you did for Symposium'96... The par-
ty was fucking great"
                   Cyclone/Illusion in an e-mail

"ROM knows that the organisers were very helpful
with the party audience."
                      MOP/Essence & ROM ED

So don't miss SYMPOSIUM'97 when it awakes in
    "VERANSTALTUNGSZENTRUM BURG SEEVETAL",
which is very close to Hamburg in North Germany, at
EASTERN 1997!

Party Radar 2

                         * PARTY RADAR II *
------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the Party Radar, part two. Here we will
have a closer look at the CBM 64 related details of
Demobit '96. Due to problems with one of the spon-
sors decided not to support the event, so it got mo-
ved to another date which is not set yet. Neverthe-
less the events remain the same, so we decided to
publish the data anyway, as moved does NOT mean
cancelled and as the rules won't change the informa-
tion might be still quite useful.

BAD NEWS! DEMOBIT '96 HAS BEEN MOVED
------------------------------------------------------------
As you sure can guess, it is because of financial
matters.

One of the sponsors, Slovenska Sporitelna that was
supposed to support Demobit with a major amount of
money has suddenly decided not to do so. They have
made this decision one week before the party! I'm not
going to comment this, you can sure set up your own
opinion on it. The party could have been organized
from the other sponsor's money only but it would
cause a significant loss of quality. From obvious
reason, we decided organise the party in about 2
months. The exact date and other information will be
published soon.

I believe, that all the people who have decided to come
will get this message on time. For me, moving Demobit's
date has been the hardest decision this year. As
Forrest says: "Shit happens."

Again, we regret this and we hope that you are less
disappointed than we are and have less problems with
it than we have. Please stay tuned for additional in-
formation.

Signed,

Palo "Skywalker" Luka
Demobit [Dis]organizer

Everybody who still want to compete on DB'96 C64
competions, please send e-mail to:

                        chlebec^ubt.uniag.sk

Every bad thing is good for something:
 1. You have more time for doing your demo, graphic
     or music
2. Demobit will be better organised
3. You will be better informed.

See ya,

and MicroSoft Slovakia Ltd., and supported by TWIST
Radio and SME Newspaper.

                           WHEN AND WHERE
                           --------------
The door opens on October 4th (Friday) at 12:00 pm
(noon) and closes on October 6th (Sunday) at 4:00
pm. Demobit will be held in 3 big halls of PKO (Park
Kultury a Oddychu) in Bratislava, Slovakia.

                         MAIN COMPETITIONS
                         ----------------
The competitions cover all widespread platforms of
home computers in common cathegories that include
demos, intros, music and graphics.

The competitors do not have to be present at the
party place, they may send their contributions to us.
However, we cannot guarantee the presentation of
these contributions if they are sent too late or in
case of unexpanded problems. We do not return the
diskettes that the contribtions arrived on.

All the contributions will be published by the organi-
zers. We also reserve rights to make any changes to
the competition rules and to disqualify any of the en-
tries if we do not find them suitable for the presen-
tation. None of the competition entries may have been
released before Demobit '96. If there are too many
entries in a competition, we reserve the right to form
a jury of known scene people which will pick the best
entries for the competition. If a production lasts lon-
ger than the limit of its cathegory, it will be cut off
after the limit is gone.

                         C 64 COMPETITIONS
                         ----------------

            * only one tune per musician

                                  PRIZES
                                  ------
We will not publish the prizes in advance, because
they will depend on number of visitors. The rewards
will be financial plus software packs from Microsoft.

                            VOTING SYSTEM
                            -------------
We will use network voting system with diskette iden-
tification key, which every visitor will obtain after
buying the ticket. It will be possible to vote on voting
computers, additionally the voting software will be
available on the party network, which will allow people
to vote on their own computers, too (naturally, they
must be connected to the party net). The voting sys-
tem will contain no names of authors of productions,
only numbers. Each visitor will get a note sheet,
where they can put down notes during the competi-
tion.

                   PARTY NETWORK, INTERNET
                   -----------------------
Visitors who will bring their own equipment will have
the possibility to get connected to the local Party
Network and have access to gigabytes of demos, uti-
lities, products presented at the party and other in-
teresting information. Also, they will be able to use
their computer to vote and of course connect to the
Internet. To connect to the Party Network you will
need the following:

* Ethernet 802.3 (thin Ethernet) compatible network
   adapter
* T-connector
* network cable (atleast 1.5 m)
* driver for your adapter compatible with IPX a
TCP/IP drivers (drivers for most common adapters
will be available, but bring your own for sure)

Each user will get the account on the local Novell
network and on a local UNIX server after buying the
ticket. These accounts will also be created for visi-
tors without own computers on request. The Novell
account will also include a home mail directory, where
the owner will have size-limited write access and will
be readable for all other users. An IRC-like chatter
will be available on the local network. All kinds of in-
formation and all presented productions will be pub-
lished on the net, too. Supported protocols within the
network will be IPX and IP. IP addresses will be as-
signed at entrance.

HOW TO GE TO THE PARTY PLACE
               ----------------------------
"Park kultury a oddychu" is located on the left bank
of river Dunaj (Danube, Donau) between the Lafran-
coni and Novy bridges. The public transport means
numbers which will drive around PKO are: trams 1, 4,
5, 9, 12 and busses 26, 29, 31, 39, 102.

If you want to travel by bus or tram you will need to
buy tickets. You can buy them in slotmachines on the
bus stops or in newsstands. They cost 7 SK. When
you get on the bus you are supposed to mark them in
marking machines that are in the bus, or you risk be-
ing caught and charged the penalty (which is cur-
rently 200 SK).

How to get to the party place from:
-----------------------------
* The MAIN railway station (Hlavna stanica)
   * tram number 1
   * bus number 47 or 43, get off on the "Stary roz-
hlas" stop (it's the third stop), then get on the
      bus number 31 or 39

* The railway station "Nove mesto"
   * tram number 4

* The bus station "Bajkalska"
   * tram number 4
   * bus number 39

* The bus station "Mlynske Nivy"
   * take bus number 37, get off on "Racianske myto"
stop, then take bus number 39
   * take trolleybus number 210, get off on "Stein
pivovar" stiom then take tram number 4, 9 or 12

If you come at night, you can use the system of night
busses, which works like this: busses go to all areas
of Bratislava and they meet at the mail railway sta-
tion (Hlavna stanica) at the same time. There they
wait until they are all there and then they leave, each
in a different direction, into a different part of the
city. This happens 3 times a night. The departure ti-
mes from the main station are 23:50, 1:00 and 3:20.
It stops on the bus stop only when requested (there
are buttons inside the bus which you have to push if
you want to get off). These bus lines run past PKO:
503, 504 and 517

The easiest way to get to the party place is to use
the taxi. The price from the Mail railway station or
from the bus station "Mlynske Nivy" is around 120
SK.

                        DEMOBIT '96 CD-ROM
                        -----------------
This is the best way to get all the productions from
Demobit. This CD will give you hours and hours of mu-
sic, demos, megabytes of graphics from the competi-
tions including those which weren't presented on big
screen.

Organizers do not reserve exclusivity (you can put
your productions on other CD-Rom titles as too).

Top three winners in every cathegory will get Demo-
bit '96 CD free.

The expected price of the CD is $7 in case you order
it during Demobit or $10 if you give your order later.

way like during the past few days we feel free to re-
move the supporting text and to print the address
only in order to save memory as we do not feel like
releasing many adress chapters to fill up the maga-
zine and to impress the readers with a huge amount
of text. WE feel free to present your advertisements
coming up to our interests in order to SAVE memory!
