--------------------------------------------------------------

WE WILL KEEP BEATING YOUR PULSE!

Welcome to the 23rd edition of THE PULSE MAGAZINE, also
known as the April feature. This edition is unfortunately a
little delayed, as we have been stationed at two parties
across Europe - one of which was the smashing success,
the X96 held by SCS+TRC. A full report can be found in our
brand new chapter, CURRENT EVENTS.

THE PULSE MAGAZINE has had difficulty getting settled in
the year of 1996. It has been frustrating finding good help to
do this demanding magazine, but now our problems may be
solved. We have two very talented people in the background,
who may very well be introduced in the next edition - which
is why I will not reveal who it is yet. This means we should be
back on a full program, hopefully without any missing chapters
in the future. We will also attempt to cover the scene in its
full lenght, getting a closer look at the Australian and
overseas scene - which of course should be a part of a scene
magazine such as this one.

This edition welcomes a brand new member, $IXX of F4CG,
who joined our staff at the X96 party in Holland. He comes
warmly recommended by our friend, NEWSCOPY, and will
no doubt strenghten our hopes for a future number 1 position
in the charts.

We would like to ask for the help of all our readers, to send us
news, reports, articles - everything that could be of interest
to this magazine. We like to think THE PULSE is for everyone,
from the absolute ELITE to the latest NEWCOMER. Therefore
we urge you to award us a helping hand, and make this scene
a more fun place to live. We believe magazines are here to
make a connection between sceners, so get sending.
We realise THE PULSE MAGAZINE has suffered a few delays
lately, and we are of course very sorry about this. But we
have still made 1 edition available every month, making sure
nobody misses out on any action - which is our prime goal. We
will continue to release THE PULSE MAGAZINE on a monthly
basis, as we feel there is more than enough material and
action out there, for us C64 journalists to write about.

This edition offers a lot of good reading, and we have a lenghty
report on the SYMPOSIUM '96 party in Germany, as well as
the amazing X96 in Holland. There will also be another great
edition of World of Demos - which is a must for everyone that
loves demos on this old machine. We also bring you an
interesting interview with one of the editors of the American
magazine, DRIVEN. Get reading - and enjoy!

Happy C64 April!
DUKE, General Editor!

THE PULSE MAGAZINE is a complete C64 scene based

giving you an insight about all the corners of the scene - in
short, we cover the world, because the C64's business is our

The contents of this edition may not have to be the opinion of
all editors in the staff of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. Each editor
is of their own seperate opinion, but feel free to express that
opinion without having to express the overall opinion of THE
PULSE MAGAZINE.

Thanks must go to those that helped us in the making of this

us news and information. We appreciate the support!

monthly releases

----------------------------------------
                      + Monthly releases - March +
----------------------------------------

Welcome back once again readers to the world of first
releases. Brought to you by your usual specialist Jazzcat of
Onslaught.
The month of March was one for a good amount of releases
and not short of the odd argument between competitive
groups.
Major USA boards that qualify for this issue:
THE DUNGEON XXX-XXX-XXXX Scs*Trc+Hitmen+Dmx
DOWN BY LAW XXX-XXX-XXXX Onslaught
DREAM PARK XXX-XXX-XXXX Avantgarde + F4cg
DEAD ZONE XXX-XXX-XXXX Onslaught
THE EVIL ISLAND XXX-XXX-XXXX Alphaflight
Incase problems occur, Holiday Inn Cambodia, The Bass
Planet and Fortress of Doom will be taking into consideration.
----------------------------------------
ACRISE & EXCESS (Ger,Hol) Points: 0.3
----------------------------------------
The co-op managed to get one ware to the Usa boards once
again, this time, SMASH PRV (0.3).
Other wares were also releases that wouldn't have earned
points, but also were not uploaded on the boards anyway.

----------------------------------------
ALPHAFLIGHT 1970 (Ger,Hol,Usa,Pol,Uk) Points: 6.9
----------------------------------------
Active German based team provided some nice releases,
beginning with TRONIK (2.4) from Sectech Developments.
The game not being 100% ntsc fixed causing pal only points
and a -2 deduction in the fixed chart.
The flight were first with a rather nice tool called SUPER
HIRES INTERLACE FLI EDITOR (-) from Magna Media, a
tool programmed by Crossbow/Crest.
Next to come was the Sales Version of previously unsold
game FIELD OF HADES (4.5) from Magna Media and ntsc
fixed by Success+Trc.
The game differs from the previously released Motiv8 version
as it contains an intro sequence from Magna Media.

----------------------------------------
AVANTGARDE (Ger,Usa,Pol,Uk,Den) Points: 5.7
----------------------------------------
Inactive Avantgarde managed to gain some points release
wise once again.
They started in partnership with F4CG with THE ISLAND (4.7)
from Lk Avalon, which was ntsc fixed and translated.
After this discussion began on Mystical Paradise concerning
ON ICE 100% (1.0) from Nemesis Productions. Is identical to
the Success+Trc first release except containing a docs file,
so a special point was awarded. It was clear to most who
deserved full points for this release.
----------------------------------------
CHROMANCE (Hun,Ger,Usa,Pol,Swe) Points: -4.7
----------------------------------------
Hungarian sensation slowed in it's action with the dying of
blueboxing and not having other ways to keep up to date on
the Usa boards.
They still managed some releases, beginning with PRINCE OF
PERSIA PRV (0.3) which was unplayable.
After this came FIELD OF HADES (-5) from Magna Media,
it being identical in every way to the Afl version released
earlier. Also came S.H.I.F.E. (-) also previously released by
Afl, but no release points as it being a utility.
----------------------------------------
HITMEN (Ger,Swe) Points: 0.8
----------------------------------------
Only a single ware this month, but still of good quality.
FUTURE WORLD PRV V2 (0.8) from Cherry Software.
----------------------------------------
F4CG (Bel,Swe,Usa,Pol,Aus) Points: 9.4
----------------------------------------
The active force of F4cg did well once again this month with
some good releases, which is hard to achieve these days.
Firstly came CHWAT (4.7) from Vermes, running on ntsc/pal
and translated.
Soon after this they released with Avantgarde, THE ISLAND
(4.7) from Lk Avalon, ntsc fixed and translated.

----------------------------------------
LAXITY (Ger,Hol) Points: 4.4
----------------------------------------
The low profile group is once again making itself known to the
first release scene.
They released DUMI (4.4) from Imaic Productions, ntsc fixed
by Avantgarde.
----------------------------------------
MOTIV 8 (Den,Ger,Usa,Nor) Points: 13.3
----------------------------------------
One of the most active groups of today had another very good
month.
The Danish based team provided STATUE PARTY (0.0) from
Loadstar, running ntsc/pal and in basic.
After this came SPUT PRV (0.2) from Sensei Productions, then
REMOTE CONTROL (3.3) running on ntsc/pal. Next to come
was DRUNKEN BAT & BALLS (3.2) ntsc fixed.
After several days the activity continued with CONFUSION
QUEST 2 (0.0) from Eagle Soft, running ntsc/pal, no points as
it is made using a game maker.
On the last day of the month a whole bunch of releases came,
firstly PIT (2.1) from Loadstar, THE SEARCH (2.2) from
Loadstar both running ntsc/pal. Then OWEN'S ESCAPE (2.3)
running on ntsc/pal and to finish the month came SOLITAIRE
GOLF (0.0) from C159 Prod, and in compiled basic.
----------------------------------------
ONSLAUGHT (Aust,Ger,Hun,Den,Usa,Pol) Points: 17.2
----------------------------------------
Australian based team came over it's troubles with Bizarre
getting busted and private problems of Vengeance to take
the crown.
Firstly came SNAKEY '96 PRV (0.2) a Danish ware.
Several days later came ICE TEA (4.4) from Century Art
Studios and ntsc fixed.
BURAGO RALLY 100% (6.7) from 576 Kbyte, ntsc AND pal
fixed. The version released by Chromance earlier still had
flickering on both ntsc and pal.
Next came a Polish ware called JORI PRV (0.3) from Phuture.

To finish of their nice month came MORTAL DOGFIGHT (5.6)
from Everlasting Style/Coma Soft, and ntsc fixed.
----------------------------------------
PALACE (Fin,Swe) Points: 0.4
----------------------------------------
They make an appearance once again with the rather nice
MISFIRE PRV V2 (0.4).
Hope to see more from them in the future.

----------------------------------------
SUCCESS & TRC (Hol,Pol,Usa,Ger) Points: 4.3
----------------------------------------
The ruling co-op was quite active this month, mainly in their
ntsc fixing. But they managed a nice release called ON ICE
(4.3) from Nemesis Productions and ntsc fixed.
Their version is the complete game, minus the documentation
file which was released by Avantgarde.
Arguments between both Scs+Trc and Deff/Avt broke out on
Mystical Paradise, but both groups benefit so there should be
no more discussion.
----------------------------------------
XENON (Hol,Ger) Points: 4.1
----------------------------------------
The Dutch breeze began again with NAVIGATOR (4.1) from
Stealth Labworks, ntsc fixed by Success & Trc.

----------------------------------------

So ends the month of March.
Groups participating seemed to have some clashes in certain
areas of the first release market.
There may very well be negative reactions to decisions on
games such as ON ICE or FIELD OF HADES, but these are the
best decisions and in the majority of the public, the correct
choice.
Now presenting the charts of March..

No support at all from the American scene once again, but
their are still those that take care in the quality of their
release.
Main fixers this issue in order;
Jolz/Onslaught, Count Zero/Scs+Trc and Jack Alien/Avt.
Hopefully the ntsc market will rise next issue with the

ACRISE + EXCESS (GER, HOL, POL, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The German phreaker, MENDRAKE, who just recently returned
to the scene, and signed up with the ACRISE+EXCESS
co-operation, was busted abusing ISDN-lines. He announced
having to pay $50.000 to the German telekom, which will most
likely put him out of action. Meanwhile MENDRAKE revealed
MEGA MADNESS would soon be out once again, the next
edition will be the 11th. As a result of MENDRAKE's
unfortunate incident, the American WHQ of ACRISE+EXCESS,
GALAXY, was closed down. The sysop of GALAXY, GALACTUS,
revealed plans to sell his equipment for $1000 - a very
ambitious price indeed, and that rules out any possible
comeback.

According to ACRISE+EXCESS, a person called ESCIC should
have left ONSLAUGHT to join ACRISE+EXCESS. According to
JAZZCAT, there has never been a member of such name in
ACRISE + EXCESS (GER, HOL, POL, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

ONSLAUGHT. But the new member is nonetheless admitted to
the memberstatus in the German based co-operation. He will
replace the empty space made by ARTEX, who was kicked out
of the co-operation.

The German coder, DANZIG, decided to do what was
otherwise completely impossible - he signed with ALPHA
FLIGHT. It was an odd decision, as he used to hate the team.
But today he is a member, and things have changed.

AVANTGARDE (GER, USA, ENG, SWI, POL, DEN, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The former number one cracking-group in the world,
AVANTGARDE, will probably stay around for a while more. But
rumours are everywhere to be found about this group, who is
said to be on its final term. The infamous boss of
AVANTGARDE, DEFF, promised to return in a more active role
on the American boards. But he failed to keep his promise, and
today AVANTGARDE is a rare group to see on the boards these
days.

But although AVANTGARDE may be going down in one section,
they are doing better in another. The efforts made by
AVANTGARDE to become more involved in the legal scene, has
finally started paying off. AVANTGARDE announced the future
release of a graphics-collection from CUPID, featuring code by
DRUID and music by METAL.
AVANTGARDE (GER, USA, ENG, SWI, POL, DEN, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The famous Danish musician, METAL, will also feature in his
own music collection - which will be his first. This production
will be supported by DRUID with coding, and CUPID on the
graphical side.

CHROMANCE (GER, HUN, SWE, USA, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Canadian HQ of CHROMANCE, FINAL GENOCIDE, was
finally taken off-line. The sysop of the board, DEVIANT, was
very unhappy about the lacking support, and therefore decided
to take a break from the board-business. DEVIANT will stay
active calling boards though, and also remains a member of
CHROMANCE. DEVIANT may however return with FINAL
GENOCIDE in the future though, as he is working on plans for a
comeback with FUSION.

CHROMANCE and RESOURCE has opened an FTP site,
GANGSTA'S PARADISE. The site is maintained by LION of
CHROMANCE/RESOURCE, while the illegal operator is
MR.WAX/CHROMANCE. The site is under construction at the
moment, but wares are already available.

F4CG (BEL, ITA, USA, GER, POL, AUS, SWE, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

F4CG once again served us with aUwell written press-release,
courtesy of PROPAGANDA editor, NEWSCOPY. We are therefore
able to follow up on the latest occurrences within the ancient
team, that represents an important part of C64 scene history.

We begin with an upbeat story, as it seems MOLOCH is still a
member of F4CG, unlike what was reported in various
magazines. He is however focusing on his legal label,
THRESHOLD PRODUCTIONS, which is founded to support the
American market with quality software. The F4CG musician,
DECODER, was finally removed from the memberstatus due to
inactivity. He will however be replaced by last months new
edition to F4CG, the Swedish talent ZYRON. He will feature in
all future creations from F4CG, as well as the independently
released PROPAGANDA.
F4CG (BEL, ITA, USA, GER, POL, AUS, SWE, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

F4CG have always market itself as a strong Italian based
side, but these days the leadership has moved to Sweden. One
of the few Italian members left, KING, was removed from the
side due to inactivity. But there appears to be another reason
why he was kicked, as he is currently working in the police,
and has been threatening parts of the F4CG-organization for
illegal activities.

F4CG are planning to upgrade heavily on their SNES activities.
They are currently working with GEGGIN, SLAYGON and
ALFATECH from CENSOR on the SNES. All former mentioned
members will contribute their work to the group, and will also
be converting the wildly popular C64 magazine, PROPAGANDA,
in the near future. Meanwhile ANTITRACK is converting the
popular cube intro among other classics for the future on the
SNES.
F4CG (BEL, ITA, USA, GER, POL, AUS, SWE, etc.)

That leaves but only the F4CG information. Here it goes.

NOICE (SWE)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The C64 magazines are often accused of not paying enough
attention to C64 demo-groups. But now that we have become
a part of the world-wide Internet, we had the chance to check
the current whereabouts of the Swedish based demo-group,
NOICE. We posed the group with the obvious question - What
are the latest news within NOICE?

According to an unknown member (he did not introduce his
handle to us), there are very few happenings within the NOICE
ranks. They apparently signed on a brand new coder, which is
called NIGHTOWL. He has previously been a member of
SILENTS/REBELS on the Amiga, which was in their glory
days.

DOXX is however nolonger a member of the group, as he left
about a year ago. He also stopped all of his activities for the

Swedish music label, SWEMIX, which is currently dominated
by F4CG musician, ZYRON.

This leaves us with the current memberstatus, which should
go as follows. Also notice the new Web Page, which will offer

--------------------------------------------------------------

The German phreaker, BIZARRE, should return to an active
state in the near future. He is said to be calling out already,
and can therefore be found on the American boards again.

The Turkish member of ONSLAUGHT, MR.BRAIN, also returned
to an active state on the boards, as well as with a brand new
internet account.

Another comeback was announced in the ranks of
ONSLAUGHT, one many has waited months for. VENGEANCE
should be back in an active state, having solved whatever
personal problems he had. He should therefore be back on the
road with VANDALISM NEWS in the near future.

PADUA (GER)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The German demo-group, PADUA, are one of those groups,
that are active when releasing a demo. This was why we
asked them about their current activity, and they replied -
"Yes, we are active, we even released a demo at the
beginning of March - at our party, THE CONVENTION '96" says
ANONYM to NEWS JOURNAL. The demo was of course the 6th
version of TORTURE, and it was subtitled "We can't get
enough of it".

The actual memberstatus however, appears to be somewhat
of an unknown part of PADUA. But we did get ANONYM to list
one, and it should go somethin like this.

MEMBERS    : Leonardo, Pommac, Jadawin, Deathlok and The

REFLEX (GER)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The most successful demo-group of the last couple of years,
REFLEX, have suffered a heavy loss, as one of today's best
coders - QUISS, announced on the SYMPOSIUM '96 party, he
was going to leave the C64. It seems as though he has no
interest in the C64 anymore, having won several demo-
competitions the last couple of years.

REFLEX will however remain active, with many other active
and talented members. But QUISS should be gone for good,
making the win at the SYMPOSIUM '96 competition his last.

DUNGEON changed though, and can be found in the boards
area.

PEACEMAKER's board, THE MYSTICAL PARADISE, is now
also running as the European HQ for SCS+TRC. It will remain
EHQ for HITMEN though, making it the second board SCS+TRC
shares with HITMEN.

H-BLOXX decided to leave SCS+TRC, and is therefore only a

THE BOARD REPORT........................................................April 1996
----------------------------------------
Indeed, March was another eventful month which I will now
try to cover with the best of my abilities! :-)

GALAXY, former HQ of HARDCORE and MOTIV 8 USHQ for an
extremely brief encounter, took on EXCESS+ACRISE as their
HQ-group, in the hope that THEY would bring in more callers
than both HARDCORE and MOTIV 8 was able to bring in. One
could wonder, as does anyone else calling the boards: "When
will Galactus wake up of his sweet dreams and realize that
the problem is not the GROUP he takes on, but HIMSELF!"..
This is in NO way a biased comment and anyone with a little
bit of knowledge about this guy will know EXACTLY to what I
am referring! Strike that last comment off the record.. :-)

Another ROLE-HQ was opened in Belgium. This one is named
CRY IN AGONY and can be reached at +32-5036-2456.. -More!-
THE BOARD REPORT........................................................April 1996
----------------------------------------
The infamous MENDRAKE, once a member of groups such as
the old HITMEN, EPIC, and ofcourse ACRISE, returned from
England to Germany, joined the EXCESS+ACRISE co-op and
opened up a new board in Germany by the name of DRAGON'S
TOWER..It can be reached at +XX-XXXX-XXXXXX.. However, in
late March Mendrake announced the fact the he had been bus-
ted for abusing ISDN-lines and was forced to pay $50.000 to
the german telekom, and he had to take his board offline again.
One would wonder exactly HOW true this busting is, though!!!

Over half a year ago, when Chotaire/ALPHA FLIGHT closed
down his board, THE PIRATE ISLAND, he promised to bring it
back some time. This was applauded by many and disliked by
others. Either way, the board has been re-opened and can be
reached at its old number... One thing, though - The board is
now PRIVATE and why will be explained here.. -More!-
THE BOARD REPORT........................................................April 1996
----------------------------------------
When logging in onto THE PIRATE ISLAND, you get the follow-
ing message as a bulletin: "You have reached private C64-
scene board. This board has once been the world's most visi-
ted and the accepted Europe's No.1.. But this has changed,
this board will no longer be a place of psychotic wars and the
ultimate lamer's showdown. From now on this board will be
PRIVATE, if you are worthy enough you will get access, other-
wise you will be DELETED. It does not depend if you think of
yourself as elite, the only thing which depends on your vali-
dation on here, is your character and your way of acting on the
boards. Don't act cocky if you get deleted even after one
smartass action, but this is how it works here, this place
stays clean, and will remain a tavern of the real coolies.."..
So in general, it looks like Chotaire is planning to run his board
a bit like AVANTGARDE used to run THE FORUM. Not everybody
but only SOME will get access.. -More!-
THE BOARD REPORT........................................................April 1996
----------------------------------------
Ofcourse, this decision by Chotaire caused a lot of turmoil
from people who were not accessed on his board, and you can
say it has its upsides and its downsides. Yours truly, however,
applaud the idea and could only wish others would take the
same initiative.. The "new" PIRATE ISLAND can be reached at
+XX-XXXX-XXXX, running Cyborg modded C*Base and together
with THE ESCAPADE, still functions as a secondary Euro-HQ
for ALPHA FLIGHT..

The newly opened LIQUID PALACE in the 609-area was online
for a brief while running as WHQ for the american demo-group
STYLE. After a few weeks, they decided to take on MOTIV 8
to share the board with STYLE. As a result of that, LIQUID
PALACE is now MOTIV 8 USHQ and STYLE WHQ. Number is
609-396-9058 and is quickly expanding.. Sysop is ofcourse, as
mentioned before, Sphere/STYLE/MOTIV 8.. -More!-
THE BOARD REPORT........................................................April 1996
----------------------------------------
After kicking out CAVRON and thereby losing their German HQ,
the dutch maniacs in SUCCESS*TRC decided to make the (in-)
famous MYSTICAL PARADISE, sysoped by Peacemaker/HIT-
MEN, their new EHQ. Mystical Paradise still also functions as
EHQ for HITMEN, though..

Whilst on the topic of HITMEN+SCS*TRC-boards, THE DUNGE-
ON went back online on the night of March 19th.. All accounts
from the "original" board is still on and the board is back in
good old style.. Only thing different is the new number, which
is probably all for the better anyway: XXX-XXX-XXXX.. CALL IT!!!

Last month we announced that DREAM PARK has been black-
listed by the AT&T & MCI. I'm affraid this was a typo which I
did not notice before AFTER release. It is in fact DEAD ZONE
which was blacklisted, NOT DREAM PARK! My mistake! -More!-
THE BOARD REPORT........................................................April 1996
----------------------------------------
Sad news went in, as the sysop of the Canadian CHROMANCE-
board, DEVIANT, decided to take his board offline due to
lacking support from his group. He said farewell to the status
as a sysop after having it for 7 years. Deviant/CHROMANCE
will stay in the scene and his group, and will still be seen
calling out from time to time, though..

After some intense search, THE PULSE MAGAZINE finally
found a new american board to call their WHQ. The board is
THE BASS PLANET, which is also WHQ for CHROMANCE, and
therefore shared between the group and the mag. The number
for this board is XXX-XXX-XXXX.. Calling and posting your news
here would be the SUREST way of getting your news published
in THE PULSE, although we will ofcourse STILL be keeping an
open eye with other boards aswell! 8-) Sysop of THE BASS
PLANET is Scratcher/CHROMANCE!! -More!-
THE BOARD REPORT........................................................April 1996

Swedish NOISE-board HIGHWAY is currently down, as it had a
huge harddisk crash.. Sysop, JOYRIDE, however promise to
have the problems fixed within a forthnight and get the board
back online..

LUCIFER, formerly a member of ILLUSION, CHROMANCE and
CODERZ, who was the third C64-hacker in Houston to be bust-
ed about two years ago was released from jail and started to
appear on IN LIVING COLOR and DREAM PARK, also promising
to put his board, PHIBERCOM, back online in the near future.
The board will be renamed into PHIBERCOM II, though! Wheth-
er or not the board will be back online on the same old number
is yet unknown, but THE PULSE MAGAZINE will definately be
keeping you up to date as the informations slide in!! :-) One
thing is for sure, it WILL be in the 713-area!

THE BOARD REPORT........................................................April 1996

Another old C64-veteran returned to the scene, as L.A. STYLE,
formerly a member of ACTION and GENESIS PROJECT returned
to the C64 putting his board, once called HACK CHECK and
functioning as the EHQ for G*P, back online. He however gave
the board a new name although it looks exactly like in the
good old days. The new name is THE HIDDEN and it can be
reached by dialing +49/2183-450701. As L.A. STYLE joined up
with MOTIV 8, THE HIDDEN is a secondary EHQ for them.

TAO/TRIAD reporting for THE PULSE MAGAZINE:

The board opened for real the 8th of February 1996; all art on
the board so far is done by me. The board is the European
Headquarter for DRIVEN MAGAZINE, and will soon contain all
back issues of DRIVEN. As soon as possibility is given (better
personal economy!), I'll upgrade the modem to a 14.4k or 28.8k
with Swiftlink.. The program will also be modified by me soon;
upspeed, bugfixed, freshed up, and improved... I might incor-
porate Y-modem and/or Z-modem, if I manage to get myself to

+ SATIRICA - THE AUTOPSY OF THE SCENE +
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome back to the domains of SATIRICA. We take pride in
basing out stories on lies and rumours. This means, if there is
something controversial being spread around about you - feel
safe, that you will be able to read about it here, along with the
rest of the world.

Since the last edition, a lot of people have been sending us
letters and post-cards, as well as notes through the internet.
To those two took the time to write, we would just like to say
"The same to YOU!".

REGARDING SATIRICA,
The stories included in SATIRICA are pure fiction, all of which
are based on a satiric state of mind. We do not want to offend
anyone, but rather pass on a smile in these trying times.
We hope you will enjoy the read. General Editor, DUKE.
                  DINGOS TO REPLACE BRITISH COWS..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Tasmanian devil, JAZZCAT, was appalled at the British
authorities decision to slay millions of cows throughout Great
Britain. It appears Tasmanian-based dingo's have suffered the
same type of decease, making them shake horrible, because of
a brain malfunction. "I have seen this problem with the
Dingo's, but the stupid Austalian bureaucrats refused to allow
me to slay them" stated JAZZCAT to DEAD DINGO magazine.
"I propose we let the cows live, and let them slay the Dingo's
instead. This way the politicians get their number of killings
anyway" stated JAZZCAT proud, while handing over his
proposition to the Tasmanian press. JAZZCAT continues to
promote his newly founded union, DEATH TO THE DINGOS
(DTTD), which has received world-wide support from dingo
hating communities. "I also thought about naming the union
DEBORAH TOOK THE DRUGS, but the name does not really
make sense to a dingo hating person" says JAZZCAT.
                RECORD TO SAVE AVANTGARDE..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The notorious leader of AVANTGARDE, DEFF, revealed plans to
secure AVANTGARDE for the future on a Berlin
press-conference. The wildly popular cracking-team has
lacked inspiration in the new year, and large parts of the press
predicts AVANTGARDE will die in the near future. The
problems are partly due to the party mentality within the
group, many of the members are unable to support their
drinking habits financially.

But due to the spirit and will of DEFF, the group of 1995 may
work its way through another year, without falling to its death
in the endless inactivity pit. DEFF has signed an exclusive
deal with Madonna's record-label, MAVERICK, which should
pay AVANTGARDE a nice round figure in the near future.
                RECORD TO SAVE AVANTGARDE..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The new record established by DEFF, will feature songs from
various famous sceners, who have agreed to help
AVANTGARDE in their hour of need.

The majority of the tracks on the album, are covers off famous
songs. The album features "We are the scene" - taken from
the original "We are the world". The notorious BRUCE
SPRINGSTEEN tune "Born in the USA" was converted into
"Born with a C64", and the final number "I just called to
download a demo" was a cover off the STEVIE WONDER song
"I just called to say I love you".

The album is available at Kebab's Pizza house world-wide
now!
                    MONSTERS INHABIT MAIL-BOXES..
--------------------------------------------------------------

General editor of THE PULSE MAGAZINE, DUKE, announced
this month, how he had plans to stop all his swapping
activities. The comeback last year gave him ideas to bring
together a group of contacts, but now he is calling it quits.

The desire to stop swapping has built itself up lately, with a
disturbing experience last year. "The mail-box has frightening
monsters in it, I dare not send any more disks in my life" -
stated DUKE to frightened swappers.

It seems other swappers have lived through the same
experience, showing evidence of ripped fingers and hands.
                        THE SATIRICA TOP 5 LIST..
--------------------------------------------------------------

Five things overhead at the X96 party in Utrecht, Holland.

5. What irony, the best C64 party ever held at a kindergarten.

4. God, these beers taste awful. Let's have some more!

3. The F4CG gift-shop sucks, they have no more inflated dulls!

2. The party is a success, because DUKE did not release
    THE PULSE (ed. HEY!!!)

- And the unbeatable number one!

1. Had I known AIRWOLF stayed home, I would have brought
    my computer!
                THE COUNTDOWN TO SEVEN..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The C64 scene has always been one step behind Hollywood, at
least when it comes to providing entertaining movies to the
public. But due to a brand new treaty signed by C64 president,
BOB of TALENT, all movies entering the scene domain, will
have to undergo special treatment. This treaty has been
criticised by a large part of the scene community, but BOD
stated on a conference, that there was nothing wrong with
cutting out the best part of movies - the Germans, French,
Italians, Spanish and other isolated and shy countries have
done this for years. "Besides, I think sceners are best off with
as little realism as possible, the real world have no place on
the C64" stated BOD to NO-LIFE-MAGAZINE.

As a result, the sinister thriller starring BRAT SPIT, SEVEN,
was re-created for the C64 scene, and will now be called
SEVEN-11. The new lead actor in the C64 version will be
                THE COUNTDOWN TO SEVEN..
--------------------------------------------------------------

ANTICHRIST, who will play the role as the eccentric bad-guy,
punishing scene members who are guilty of the seven deadly
sins. The movie is quite graphic, and some of the scene's are a
tad too scary. The first sin, was a cracker intro-linking a game
without protection, followed by a swapper putting insufficient
stamps on a package for a contact.

The board of censors (represented by members of CENSOR)
stated to the movie critics, they were going to rate the movie
R - which means everyone below 12 years old or with the
letter R in their handle, will be prohibited from watching this
movie.

The editor of RELAX, RRR, was very unhappy with this
prohibition, and consequently renamed into R-LESS for the
occasion. "I cannot be fooled" stated R-LESS to the press!
                     TORTURE ONCE AGAIN TORTURED..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The notorious demo-group, PADUA, released their 6th version
of TORTURE at the CONVENTION '96 in Germany. The leader of
PADUA, ANONYM, stated to World Of Demos, how PADUA
simply could not get enough of this demo - which is why it
was subtitled - "We can't take more of it".

But now it seems a nasty rumour has been spread, how PADUA
was unable to come up with another demo name, and this was
why they continued with TORTURE.

ANONYM denied the rumour, and mentioned a few other
possibilities they had thought of - TORTUR, TORT, ERUTROT.
CALL A CARD FOR A GAME..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The cracking-scene has found itself a new method of earning
games and points, as F4CG and SUCCESS tried out a brand
new card-game at the X96. It all started when an inside deal
between the two groups, lead by NEWSCOPY and
NIGHTSHADE, that the loser of the game, would have to
supply the other group with a first-release.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but today it has spread
around the world, and it currently being practised in all groups,
and all forms of activity. It seems a certain scener, who will
remain nameless (ed. SOLAR), has started using a deck of
cards, in order to determine if he is going to be active this day.
"Yeah, it's absolutely cool. I take a card, and if it's anything
below the king, I will remain inactive" stated SOLAR to the
shocked press. The problem however appeared as SOLAR had
taken out the aces of the deck!
               DEFF FAILED COMEBACK ON BOARDS..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The famous leader of AVANTGARDE, DEFF, wrote on the
boards how he would return in an active state from March 1st.
But he has yet to hold his promise though, as he remains
unseen overseas.

A German magazine, BODY-BILD ZEITUNG, asked the person
in question, why he had problems keeping his promise. DEFF
however denied the whole affair, and stated to the famous
paper "What I just said, I never said". We will therefore have
to wait a while, till DEFF is once again incorporated as an
active part on the boards. DEFF stated he just wanted to be
left alone, and was angry at BODY-BILD ZEITUNG, claiming
they wrote false information about him.

"Stop twisting my words. I will never call out again, but
maybe tomorrow for sure" says DEFF.
2NY IS COMMITED TO OWN PLACE..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The famous leader of the Finnish group PALACE, 2NY, will not
be active on the boards or Internet for a while. It seems he
has moved into his own apartment, which enables him to
remain active through the before mentioned mediums.

"This is really exciting, and I plan to throw a million parties
within the next month" stated 2NY to the press. It seems he
has already planned a party this summer, where all sceners
are welcomed. "I have plenty of room, in fact one big one. I
will just remove the coach, and there will be room for more
than 3 C64's" says 2NY to a computer magazine in Helsinki.

He is not afraid of holding a part at his own house, considering
the OXYRON tragedy (read next story). "There is always room
for a good fire at my place, i am not that lame" says 2NY!
                       OXYRON BURNS TO THE GROUND..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The famous OXYRON may take a break from the scene, as they
suffered a tragedy at a private party.

The house burned down, and also several members were
burned to death. GRAHAM stated to the press, he wanted to
save the other members, but he just had to get his Amiga
hard-drive out first.

The reason for the fire remains unknown, but a certain member
was seen with a blow-torch the night before. GRAHAM has no
knowledge of this, but suspects the arson may be CROSSBOW
of CREST. "Now that CREST are back, they want to remove us
from the market" stated GRAHAM to the police.

CROSSBOW denied the accusations, stating to the police -
"Why would I carry a blow-torch, I do not even smoke".
                SOLAR ADMITS TO DRINKING PROBLEM..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The famous and notorious figure in F4CG, SOLAR, admitted on
a press-conference after the X96, he had a drinking problem.
It was first displayed at the X96, where he continuously
spilled his beer down people's back.

SOLAR stated to ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, who was appalled
at his blasfemic act, he was going to take a couse in holding a
beer straight. But he may have difficulty in stopping his beer
spilling, as it seems he has gone somewhat professional in the
act. "Yeah, I earned a lot of money at the party. $IXX of
F4CG paid me to spill beer down NIGHTSHADE's back" claimed
SOLAR happily after the X96 event. But he does recognise the
danger of his problem, as he may never succeed in getting
drunk again, if he continues to spill his beers. "If I had 6
fingers, maybe I wouldn't spill it" says SOLAR to the press.

SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT A C64 EXPERIENCE
--------------------------------------------------------------

The year of 1996 has already set its course, another year of
eager attempts to help the Commodore 64 survive. But who
are we kidding, it is not like we had hoped to see the C64 back
on the shelves world-wide. That will never happen, and thank
god, as that would really have been a set back on our
technology.

We are much better off acknowledging the C64 as a forgotten
system, one that has been buried deep into the ground by the
common people. To them, the different types of computers
only represent tools, and they can therefore never develop a
meaningful relationship. But to us the C64 represents
something a lot more sacred, a computer that gave us an
invaluable experience.

                                                            -
We were thrilled by our first product, excited at our first
international made friend, proud to see our group reach chart
status, sad to bid our friends farewell, amazed to follow the
progress of the C64, and so on. We have been a part of history,
and a part of a scene, that is acknowledged by other systems
as nothing less than perfect. We all owe a lot of good and
healthy experiences to the C64. It has given us an
international edge, that is not common in our age-group. It
has taught us to deal with different cultures, languages,
opinions and way of life. We have learned to work with people
beyond borders, sometimes on difficult projects, which had to
honour deadlines. The list goes on!

I remember an American calling me up at a family meeting. A
cousin of mine answered the phone, and was all confused
when an English-speaking person asked for me. He was
stunned by the direct contact with someone of a different
culture, country and world basically. I was bored, as it was
just an average conversation with another dude on the planet
- as to me nationality did not mean anything. But the call
made an impression on my cousin, who had difficulty getting
the call out of his head. Another interesting part of the scene,
must be the many letters we all get from around the world. I
think my local post-man must have been quite confused, when
I had 150 contacts world-wide. He must have thought I was
leading an international mob-syndicate. Oh well, it gave him
something to figure out, in his boring common life.

The C64 scene is not normal, but it is educational. I have lived
a hectic life in my 21 years, and many of those spend on the
C64. I have had to pay a high price for my extraordinary hobby.
I have spend a lot of money on phone-bills, and an endless
amount of stamps. I have missed important school-days due
to all-night activities on the computer, and my friends have
found me lame at times, when I had to stay home from a
party, because we were in the midst of getting an important
1st-release. The worst thing however, was when I got
arrested for abusing calling-cards. The police took my
computer, and everything that belonged to it. They even took
my expensive monitor, phone and answering-machine. I got a
2 year suspended sentence, which has run out today.

But looking back, I am glad I had the chance to try it out. The
60's had the hippies, who did drugs and threw wild orgies. The
80's had the computer nerds, who made personal use of the
technology made available. In the 90's the computer
underground became more civilised, and it seem as if everyone
is a part of it. But on the C64 we kept the old rules, at least
some of us would like to. Like the hippies of the 60's grew up,
and found proper conservative jobs in the 70's, we too have
grown up and found more important things to do with our lives.
We have however refused to give up on what represented a
great period of our lives, and I suppose this is only human.
The moral of this Special Assignment is, although our
adventure on the C64 may have had a high price, we have
gained invaluable experience because of it. Many of my friends
admire and envy my escapades on the C64, the unknown, the
underground, the unique. My parents were probably quite
unhappy with my hobby at times, but today they
acknowledge, that the C64 has given me a lot. It has taught
me many important things about life, and about people in
general.

It has also taught me the importance of quality and deadlines,
and working with people far away. It has been an experience,
one I would hate to have lived without.

The C64 is not just a computer - it is a way of life!

            + CURRENT EVENTS - C64 SCENE PARTIES +
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to a brand new addition to our monthly program, this
chapter is called CURRENT EVENTS. We will take you
throughout the world to social events, such as parties and
other meetings. In other words, we follow the C64 adventures
world-wide - with the help of our readers.

If you are holding a party in the near future, be sure to send us
an invitation. We will print it for everyone to read, and
hopefully this will help the final attendance of your event.
Make sure to send it to our HQ address, which is posted in the
PREFACE chapter - no later than the 28th of April.

We would also like to hear from people having attended C64
parties (private or public), therefore we urge you to send us
your opinions and reports - everything is most welcome in
CURRENT EVENTS. General Editor, DUKE, bids you welcome!
                  THE TRIBUTE PLANS CHRISTMAS DATE..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The famous C64 event held in Sweden by F4CG, THE TRIBUTE,
will not hold its sequel event this summer after all. The
organizers had problems finding a place for the party to be
held, and therefore put off the event for the time being. But
now it seems the lead organizer, NEWSCOPY, have found a
new and possible date for the event. This date however, may
prove to be somewhat of a risky nature, as it will have to
compete with the world famous, THE PARTY 6 in Denmark.

We are of course talking about the Christmas holiday, perhaps
the most popular holiday of all, if you are planning to attend an
underground computer event. But the arrangers of The Tribute
do not fear heavy competition from THE PARTY 6 in Denmark.
NEWSCOPY told CURRENT EVENTS, if people were really
interested in going to a C64 event, they would not visit THE
PARTY 6, but instead an exclusive C64 party.
THE EASTER PARTY REPORTS by GENERAL EDITOR - DUKE!

events, and will therefore list the actual happenings that took
place, as well as the competition results and attendance lists.

THE SYMPOSIUM '96 - HAMBURG, GERMANY
--------------------------------------------------------------

THE SYMPOSIUM '96 party took place just outside of
HAMBURG, in a nice conference center with a capacity of at
least 700 people. This party lasted 4 days, Friday 5th -
Monday 8th of April. This was why I had the privilege of
visiting this event at first - driving with HEAVY HEAD of
ONSLAUGHT. THE SYMPOSIUM party was very unknown to
me, although I remembered posters and adds from it, at THE
PARTY 5 in Denmark. But it was not to seem the biggest of
C64 events, although it later proved to be somewhat okay!
The first day was kind of boring, as most people were setting
up computers, while the hall seemed rather empty and lacking
action. THE SYMPOSIUM was held at some type of Conference
center, which means it had one large hall, with a small
cafeteria - which by the way had to be the worst in history.
The consumers had the possibility to buy 3 types of snacks,
lousy pizza and Coca Cola. I dislike all of this, and therefore
had to leave the event hungry. But we were allowed to bring
food to the event, a nice feature not shared at most parties.
It actually turned out to be a good party in terms of allowing
things, we could drink all the beers we wanted, although they
did not sell any.

When the first day had ended, I left for the X96 in Holland with
HEAVY HEAD. But as I plan on giving you a lengthy report
about that event later, I will fast forward to the last day of
the SYMPOSIUM. When the X96 had ended, we returned to
Germany, in order to witness the final day of this event.
The C64 competition was done when we arrived, which was
kind of unfortunate, but the Amiga competition made up for
that - on a great screen worthy of kings.

THE SYMPOSIUM party did not offer that much in the end,
most people were tired, and getting ready to head on home.
But when it was time for the competition results, most people
were ready for the big final. It became the best result
ceremony I have ever seen, comparing it to the absolutely
lousy one at THE PARTY in Denmark. Instead of listing the
results immediately, they listed the competing groups, while a
parameter grew next to them, showing the votes each got for
their contributions. It made up for good excitement, as the
parameters grew in votes till the winner was found. An
excellent idea, in lack of better ideas of course.

                                                          -
PARTY LOCATION

THE SYMPOSIUM '96 was held at a conference hall in a suburb
of Hamburg. It had plenty of room, and there was tables and
chairs for everyone.

NEIGHBORHOOD

The suburb in which the party was held, had all the features
needed. There was shops and bakeries to buy the necessary
food. It was a nice and quiet neighborhood, that made a good
atmosphere during a late night walk.

FOOD FACILITIES

The cafet%ria featured the worst selection I have seen. They
sold 3 types of candy bars, 2 types of coca cola and 1 type of
pizza. They may have had a few other features, but I never
found out, as the cafeteria was closed about 75% of every day.
The prices were outrages, which even shocked a Danish
person - who is used to high prices.

TOILETS

The toilet facilities were absolutely great, room enough for
everyone. They were kept clean, which was nice for the
visitors at the end of the party. But I did not like the fact,
that there was no shower or hot water available. Imagine
trying to wash in ice-cold water. It was not a pleasant
experience.

SLEEPING PLACE

There was none. I put a couple of chairs together, and made
an uncomfortable chair out of that. The high music made it
impossible to sleep, but I dozed off anyway.
PARTY DURATION

THE SYMPOSIUM lasted an incredible 4 days. It was a good
duration, which took on the Easter holiday in its full duration.

COMPETITION

The party place had a giant screen, worthy of a cinema in a
larger city. It was absolutely incredible, and made all demos a
treat to watch. The C64 had 2 competitions, the demo
competition and the C64 intro competition. I missed both, as
they were held a few hours before I arrived again on the last
day.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Laser show by 2 Danes, which really looked great. There was
probably other features, but I only attended the 1st and last
day of the event. The 1st day was eventless though, which
the participants was unhappy about. It seemed there was
lacking something to push the party in motion.

ALCOHOL/DRUGS

Alcohol was allowed, but could not be purchased at the party
place. There was not a lot of heavy drinking, it seemed as
though a couple of beers was the limit for most people. But a
party of 4 days, does not go well with heavy drinking - when
you consider there was no sleeping place.

ENTRANCE FEE

35 DM - which is around 22$. The price seemed okay compared
to the event lasting an amazing 4 days.
ORGANIZERS

OXYRON held the C64 part of the event, and they were nice to
all of us. The Amiga and PC people however, seemed kind of
arrogant and annoyed. There was a lot of organizers, and it
was therefore easy to find help anywhere.

ATTENDANCE

There was no accurate figure, but I heard there was about 550
people. In this amount, about 70 of those came from the C64
scene. It was a nice amount, although they were hard to see,
as most people came without computers - me included.

--------------------------------------------------------------

There was a lot of people at the party, but no official list of
C64 people visiting was made. Therefore I had to make out a
list, with the help of generous C64 sceners. I apologize to
those that may have been left out - although they could have
listed themselves at the entry. Most failed to do this, at the
discontent of magazines such as this one.

THE SYMPOSIUM '96 party in Germany was somewhat okay,
although it lacked a touch of C64. At the beginning it was very
poor, but as people started moving around, the event improved
in quality. This is one party to attend - unless other C64
parties are being held.

JUDGMENT : *** (out of 6)
                      THE X96 - UTRECHT, HOLLAND
--------------------------------------------------------------

I have always been keen on saving the best for last, and this
is why I am proud to present the best party of 1996 - known
as the X96 held by SUCCESS + THE RULING COMPANY. When
we arrived at the party place, it took us back about 6 years,
when schools featured as normal party locations on the C64.
It was a nice nostaligic feeling to enter the party place, in
which it was impossible not to miss heaps of C64 people.

The atmosphere was great from beginning till end, and no
doubt a lot of talking went on. I personally could not walk
more than 2 feet from one talk, before I meet other people,
and a new conversation started. It was absolutely a C64
party, just like in the old days. Except now we had grown
older, and the computer was left in the back of our heads. We
just wanted to drink a few beers with our friends, and talk
about the scene and other various subjects. It was a blast,
too bad something like this is not monthly - the scene would
have been 10 times bigger today. Everyone I met loved the
party, and therefore I dare say, those who did not enjoy
themselves, must be a bunch of true lamers. The party was
magnificent indeed.

The C64 people made up about half of the total visitors, but it
seems nobody knows how many showed up. The official list
had many errors in it, and we are therefore left to make
guesses. but looking at the people who meet up, SHUZE and
WILLY COYOTE from England - first time I have met English
dudes on a C64 party - as well as people from Czechoslovakia,
it was obvious to us all, that the X96 was visited by people
from all over Europe. Also legendary C64 people met up, such
as JEROEN TEL and the CENSOR DESIGN people. What a treat
indeed.

                                                          -
In the end, the X96 became a forum of sceners, just having
good clean fun. There was no wars executed between
enemies, I even had a nice talk with NTI/ANGRY, who was
supposed to be one of my true enemies. He turned out to be a
nice guy, which is something you only figure out, when
meeting sceners in person. It is the power of such an event,
that will inspire us to stay active on the C64, and put off any
thoughts of stopping - if we had any (sure!).

PARTY LOCATION

The X96 party was held at a kindergarten - what irony some
might say. It had enough room, although it became rather
crowded in the cafeteria, and a certain C64 room, at times.
But that was no problem, we moved around in the crowd, and
had no difficulty finding the people we wanted to chat with.
There was no room for extra computers, as you needed to
reserve tables and chairs in advance.
NEIGHBORHOOD

The party was held in Utrecht, which is a large city, and
therefore you had excellent shopping possibilities in the near
area. It was a nice and quiet neighborhood, which was perfect
for the occasion.

FOOD FACILITIES

The cafeteria served drinks, beers and lemonade of all types,
while a mobile shop served hot food outside of the place.
There was plenty of food at cheap prices, and nobody had
reason to go hungry.

TOILETS

The toilet facilities were okay, even though this event did not
have hot water either. There were no shower possibilities,
but considering the party only lasted 1 and a half day, there
was no reason to have this. The toilets were kept clean - or
they just stayed clean, I do not know (although computer
people are normally pretty good at messing toilets up at
parties). There was no reason to get disgusted though, like at
most parties these days.

SLEEPING PLACE

There was no room for sleeping at the kindergarten, but the
organizers had placed two large tents outside of the place.
They were nice and comfortable, although it got very cold in
the night. But that goes along with the experience. The idea of
using tents was brilliant!

PARTY DURATION

The X96 only lasted 1 and a half day. We could have wished
for 1 day more, but that just made the party even more
intense. It was okay, as most people were kind of tired and
worn-out at the end anyway.

COMPETITION

The competition was held on a small screen in a small hall. But
there was a TV in every room, and you could therefore watch
the demos from everywhere at the party. An excellent feature,
that was appreciated by those, who were too tired to get up,
and fight for a place to get a view on the main screen. The
demos were okay, although the attention was aimed at the
CREST demo - which will be released when it is 100% done.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The X96 event was short. Therefore the organizers did not
have much room for special events, although one did take
place. The famous HARLEQUIN of SUCCESS PC (known from
his former membership in SILICON LTD. and AUDIAL ARTS on
the C64), performed Dutch rap on the small stage. It was a
nice feature, and the house was rocking.

ALCOHOL/DRUGS

Alcohol and drugs were allowed, and could be purchased at the
party. The X96 is therefore the most liberal party in the world
today, at least of C64 events I know of. Due to this initiative,
the party was given a nice edge, everyone was in a good mood.
Even though the beer drinking was somewhat heavy, it
seemed as though no one became too drunk - if they did, they
were removed from the party.

ENTRANCE FEE

30 Dutch guilders - which is around 15$. The price was okay,
and a true bargain, if you compare it to the quality of the
event itself.

ORGANIZERS

The X96 was held by SCS+TRC. They were represented by a
lot of members, but had also hired extra help from outside. The
service was excellent, and the people at the door was always
friendly. There was no problems on this front, as we all know
the SCS+TRC as a bunch of good fellas.

ATTENDANCE

The list of participants was absolutely fucked up - to use the
exact words of CBA after the event. This is why we are unable
to tell you any precise figure on the C64 attendance, and are
left to make a guess.
                                                          -
According to CBA, about 360 people showed up, while I predict
about half of those were PC freaks. This means around 180
came from the C64, although it seemed as more. The larger
part of the PC attendance, used their time at the party playing
games - like the lamers some of them are.

The C64 attendants drank beers, smoked weeds, talked,
laughed and enjoyed themselves in each others company.
Almost everyone had a chance to meet, but I do not remember
even half of them. I should mention, I had a bit of beer myself,
and a bit of F4CG-quality weed as well.
                   BURGLAR PARALYZED AFTER THE X96..
--------------------------------------------------------------

When the best party of the year had ended, the organizers
were left to clean out the place. But this was when a horrible
incident happened, one that has left the entire scene in shock.
CBA told CURRENT EVENTS - "ENNO (BURGLAR) lifted up a
table, and got some kind of brain damage. He was paralyzed
totally on the left side of his body. At first we thought it
would be over after a good day sleep, but on Monday he was
taken to the Hospital, where he still is. Tomorrow we will call
his parents, and will probably visit him there (me and
NIGHTSHADE) this coming Friday. We really hope things work
out fine for him, as it was a really fucked up thing to happen
after such a really great party".

BURGLAR is a very happy-go-lucky type of person, always in a
good mood, and friendly to everyone. We all hope he will get
back in shape soon - get well ENNO!

                         C64 SCENERS AT THE X96..
--------------------------------------------------------------

There was no official list of the attendants available, and
therefore the following list comes off the top of my head.
There was a lot more people there, but I just did not have the
time or memory to put down anymore than this. I hope you can
live with this sort of incomplete list, although the before
mentioned reason should be a valid excuse.

(SCS+TRC) Action Jackson, Alliance, Arrogance, Bacillus,
Burglar, CBA, Count Zero, Moren, Nightshade,
                Spectator, Splatterhead and Trax.
(AFL) Max, Ignorance, Marc, Styx, Shuze, Ream and Danzig.
(HITMEN) Peacemaker, Tyron, Groepaz, Jihad, Raze, Vortex,
              Curlin and Tranziie.

(CHROMANCE) Syco and Zar.
(CENSOR DESIGN) BOB, Alfatech, Swallow and Geggin.
(MON) Jeroen Tel.
(WOW) Einstein, Sorex and Stormlord.
(ANGRY) Nastiness Inc., Willy Coyote and Crusher.
(AVANTGARDE) Jack Alien, Freestyle, Weasel and Intruder.
(ACRISE+EXCESS) Spermbird.
(F4CG) $ixx, Newscopy, Motley, Jucke and Solar.
(MOTIV 8) Greenfrog and Larry.
(ONSLAUGHT) Heavy Head, Donar and MC Byte.
(CREST) Syndrom and Deekay.
(REFLEX) Happymaker.
(X-RATED) Mustaine.

A lot of other people showed up, but these are the ones I
remember off the top of my head - with help from CBA. But if
you want to make sure who is attending these parties, just
show up!
The X96 in Holland was the best C64 I ever attended. it has a
touch of the old days, and it seemed there was C64 people
everywhere.

The newcomers were mixed with the legendary names, and
that gave a nice nostalgic mixture. This event is without a
doubt a must, if they plan on holding it again next year. The
reason for this success however, was the huge amount of C64
people attending the party (and the F4CG guys, who can light
up any party). It became a historic event, worth to be stored
in memory forever.

world of demos

WORLD OF DEMOS
------------

Here you have it again - it's the chapter about the demos and
everything. You better get prepared for the BIG Best Demo of
1995 chart, which will be presented at the end of this chapter.
There are still 2 demos released in 1995 to be reviewed, which
are:

* W.T.T.H by SIESTA
* FLATLINE by SMASH DESIGNS

Although we said we would have a new Programming Critic
by this edition, we are sorry to say we haven't found one yet.
The one we were negotiating with decided to save his time for
better purposes, but we are still of good hope to present the
new staff-member by next month...
W.T.T.H by SIESTA
------------
Syndrom about the coding,
This is SIESTA's second demo and it was released at TP5
in Denmark. The first effect is some pseudo-zoomer made by
changing the charmatrix of the logos, but it looks quite cool...
Next to come is some 4*4 rotator, which can be found in many
other demos aswell... Hmm, the next part is in 8*4 resolution
and shows a landscape with textured background, but the
blocky resolution leaves much to be desired!
The next effect is a star-scroll made with sprites, nothing
spectacular but looks nice anyway. The next part was
probably inspired by old CENSOR demos, but to be honest,
those kind of color-scrolling looked much better in their
demos. The next effect is real cool. Though it uses ugly 4*4
again, it shows a picture of an animal distorting in all
directions. The endpart is just the usual sprite-upscroll.
54 % for coding...
EARTHQUAKE about the graphic,
The multicolor logos used in the intro aren't anything
completely new, but they are of good quality. Aomeba did a
naked woman in b/w next, which gets used as a loading
screen. This woman looks very skinny and ugly too. It seems
that she has to stand alot of pain and maybe Aomeba wanted
to express this with that picture. Nevertheless I don't like it
at all. A very cool picture by this painter gets shown some
parts later. Aomeba pixeled a very good logo-picture. The
Siesta logo looks just the way I like it. All characters are
somehow connected to eachother and it's complexity makes
it less obvious to see what the logo means. The face, which is
also connected to the logo, steers at you with just one eye.
Also cool are the shadow the logo casts onto a aball, that is
placed behind the half-face and the logo. At first sight I
thought of an FLI-picture but it's normal multicolor. This
picture beats most of the logos I've ever seen on C-64 and I
can't remember a cooler one in Koala-mode right now.
Concerning weight, the woman in the end part is the total
opposite of the black/white woman by Aomeba. This one by
WHW design looks, let's say, plump... The artist didn't use
many colors and so the picture was dithered instead. The
whole image looks very read and doesn't get distordered by
other colors. Technically I don't have to critizicse the picture
in a way - it's funny...

Rating for the graphics: 75 %

SYNDROM about the music,
This demo features just one long music made by TMG (I really
can't remember about those stamps;). It is some kind of
techno-inspired tune with a VERY stompy base-drum and
some filtered staccato-background. Later some simple chords
gets added, but at all there are NO harmonic errors like f.e. in
other technocomposer's tunes...
When the zoomscrollpart starts, also a new part of the music
starts, this time some more techno-like harmonies, realised
by using the filter-staccato-sound. Later a heavy
bassinstrument causes some difference. Even later there is
a new theme done by a nice $51-sound. Not that I like c64-
techno too much, but this tune sounds ok to me...

70 % for the music...

FLATLINE by SMASH DESIGNS
--------------------
Syndrom about the coding,
The first effect in this demo is a wormhole, nice to watch but
easy to do, as you just have to play an animation... The next
effect is some colorplasma done with dithered chars...
Next comes some strange colored 4*4-flicker vectors. After
that a similar effect used in the intro of Access Denied by
Reflex. After this the flicker4*4 is back and shows us some
colorplasma again. Looks nice on the bigscreen, but ugly on a
Tv. The next effect is an 8*8 zoomer, followed by a fractal
x-y-z-mover in 8*4 resolution. Next some grinning face gets
zoomed, flexed and whatever, looks ugly again.
Next to come is a 4*4 landscape, but it seems that AEG's
routine bugs, as there are a lot of black holes in the objects.
BTW. I wonder how the demo can be timed to the music if you
have to press space when turning the disk!
The next effect is an interference-part and I have to say this
was the first effect I liked! The next effect is converted from
amiga and is a light-rays-turn-around-a-ball part. After some
more colorclashcrap the screen gets black and I ask myself if
the demo is over or my disk is damaged? Or maybe I've fallen
asleep because of boredom and the sleeptimer of my Tv turned
it off... :0
Ratings for the code: 39 %

EARTHQUAKE about the graphic,
The intro features a good synchronization with the music.
After the fast flash in of som charset logos the name of the
demo gets displayed. The logo-picture, actually, shows a
graveyard below the name of the production. The style of the
logo was used so many times in different Smash-Designs
Demos but it looks quite good although it doesn't fit to the
picture scene. The colors and outlines of that logo are the
opposite of the mood a graveyard gives most of us. It's full
moon and the tree (a strange appearance) seems to end in the
"Flatline" creation above. Anyway, a good and conservative
start for a C64 demo. Next we can admire a Cindy Crawford
picture in Koala-mode. Actually it's only her head and she
doesn't look that good in koala, though. The background
shows something like a frozen plasma - just to fill the empty-
ness. Well, the picture itself seems to be a converted scan of
Cindy touched up on C64. I came to that conclusion as parts of
her hair don't look pixeled on C64. On the web you can find
pages with more than a hundred pictures of her. I guess it's
just such a picture but ofcourse I can be wrong... The next
picture seems to be such a converted picture, too. You surely
remember Extend's "Morbid Art 3". Electric did a picture
called "Lesbian Kiss" or something, originally drawn by Boris
Vallejo. Whilst Electrics conversion was a masterpiece this
version is of worse quality. The next graphic shows again
Cindy Crawford wearing a swimsuit while scrolling from down
to top as she's 2 screens high this time. Now it doesn't seem
to be a conversion but the quality is not as good as the first
one of this show. I even hardly recognized that it is her.
Finally the scrolling ends in an ugly "Smash" logo, which uses
a brown/yellow palette. As a result the level of graphical
artwork is rather low, but I appreciate that AEG did most of
the demo (coding/gfx) alone. Nevertheles I got bored buy
these ugly 8*8 effects.

Rating for the graphics: 40 %
SYNDROM about the music,
Hmm, the demo contains 2 released and 1 unreleased song.
The first tune is the great FAKE tune by KB, the second is the
Radio Napalm (?) tune by PVCF and the last one was done by
MARCY of SD. I really don't know what I should write about it,
because it's nothing but a real fast and loud rhythm. I don't
know if there are people who like trash-techno - I don't.

Rating for the tunes: 35 %

So by finishing this reviews we did the last demo of 95, now
take a look at our big 1995 Demo Chart.

+ MEET THE PRESS - A WORLD OF MAGAZINES +
--------------------------------------------------------------

The media in the scene has profound power to be a positive
influence. This is where we come in, welcome to another
edition of MEET THE PRESS. The section dedicated to take on
the media - the organisers in the C64-scene.

MEET THE PRESS also operates as the official reaction
section of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. We invite you to send us
your thoughts and views, be they positive or negative, about
this magazine. We will print your letters in the next edition,
if they reach us before the 28th of April.

This edition we have a huge program for you. We have talked
to one of the figures behind the American magazine, DRIVEN,
which has taken the world by storm. We also feature the
usual articles with news and views. General Editor, DUKE,
bids you welcome as always!
                  PROPAGANDA + THE PULSE MAGAZINE..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The two leading magazines in Scandinavia, PROPAGANDA and
THE PULSE MAGAZINE, have signed an unofficial pact,
swearing to help and assist each other in their attempts to
satisfy high ambitions. The General editors of both magazines,
NEWSCOPY and DUKE, had a talk at the X96 event, but failed
to find any solid co-operation terms.

DUKE explains to MEET THE PRESS - "We are very keen on
working side by side PROPAGANDA. We have a lot to learn from
them, and hope they will remain a true allied". The agreement
may not have any practical purpose for these two magazines,
but they may release a co-operation edition at a future event
in Europe. According to NEWSCOPY and DUKE, they would like
to work together in monthly editions, but as both editors are
keen on their own magazine projects - with staff assigned,
a possible perminent co-operation seems impossible.
             SANFORIZED PUTS OFF EXPECTED RELEASE..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The German produced X-RATED magazine, SANFORIZED, will
have to look even further into the future, to find the expected
comeback release. The SANFORIZED editor, X-RATED of
X-RATED, should still have interest in editing the magazine,
but it seems to be a problem finding a solution to a missing
outfit.

The assigned programmer, DANZIG, has promised to do the
outfit, but as he joined up with ALPHA FLIGHT at the X-96
event, he may find difficulties in making time for the outfit.

DANZIG remains a member of X-RATED though, and says to
MEET THE PRESS, he will try to come through with an outfit
in the near future.
                 CARTOON FEATURING C64 SCENERS..
--------------------------------------------------------------

A brilliant cartoon was made available to the editor of this
article, DUKE, at his adventure on the SYMPOSIUM '96 party.
This cartoon was called TALES FROM ACCEPT, and it was
covering the Herning story - also known as THE PARTY 4 in
Denmark. The creator of this comic book, QUEVIS, has made a
name of himself creating comic books featuring scene
members - without actually having a C64 of his own. The
comics are restricted to telling the tales of ACCEPT members
though, but during the events, we are also delighted with fine
comic scetches of other known personalities from the C64
scene. I urge everyone to get any copy of this fantastic series
of comics, which can be purchased from QUEVIS directly.

MEET THE PRESS - FEATURING DRIVEN EDITOR..
--------------------------------------------------------------

<D> Welcome to the spotlight COOLHAND. You are one of the
main figures behind DRIVEN, the most famous American
magazine in C64 history. Please tell us about the editors
working for DRIVEN, and about the relationship you all
have in the making of the magazine.

<C> Well, I appreciate the compliment about my help to
DRIVEN, but there are MANY people who make DRIVEN run
around. First of all, of course, is ELWIX, the main editor
and creator of DRIVEN, whose inspiration, perspiration,
and dedication are in every byte of the magazine. There
may be many of us who help with various parts of the
magazine, but without ELWIX at the helm, there would
NOT BE a DRIVEN, at least as we know it and love it
       today.
                                                          -
The DRIVEN "staff" also includes: CYBERNOID and
       DECOMP, who do the NTSC demo reviews with me;
SKYCLAD, our commercial editor; PERRY-BEAST, who
has been helping me with article editing; and on the PAL
side: ICEBALL, articles and news; COUNT ZERO, PAL
demo reviews; Tao, articles, soon-to-start column,
and our EHQ BBS sysop (VIRTUAL LIGHT); and MACX
and DR. SOFT, who supply a public domain release list.
CYBERNOID is also our NAHQ sysop with his demo
       board (CORROSION OF CONFORMITY).
And, although not editors or staff per se, I really want
to mention and thank ALL the people who have
contributed articles to DRIVEN. I truly believe that it is
THEIR talents, knowledge, and viewpoints, which they
have shared with out readers, that have been absolutely
vital factors in making DRIVEN as popular and enjoyable
       as it has become.
<D> DRIVEN has earned a lot of respect around the world, and
today it is situated in the magazine charts - taking on the
established European and Tasmanian magazines. What do
you think is the reason for this, as it must be said to be
somewhat of a wonder to see an American production in
       this charts!

<C> I think the comment about "a wonder" is really one of
American scene activity in general vs. Euro or other PAL
geographic areas of high C64 activity, i.e., it is a wonder
to see an American production at all, not a wonder that
it is of high enough quality to be on the charts. It is just
for this reason, in fact, to promote more activity in the
NTSC demo scene, that DRIVEN was started. And it
seems to be making a difference, by the way.

Why DRIVEN has become popular and has gained respect
around the world is not as easy to answer. I guess you
would have to say that people like what we offer. A mix
of topics including objective demo reviews, articles on
the Internet and a wide variety of other C64-related
topics, and demo scene news and information from all
over the world. Variety, yet consistency; informative,
yet entertaining. Balancing these factors must be a big
       part of the answer.

Although DRIVEN was originally conceived as an NTSC-
only magazine, we soon realized that isolationism of
this kind was not the most productive way to encourage
the demo scene and spread information to the entire C64
community, in North America, or anywhere in the world.
So, early in its life, DRIVEN broadened its perspective
and horizons and has since included PAL news, features,
reviews and staff within its boundaries.

And in doing so, the world world is now likely to find
things of interest in each issue. We hope we are doing our
part in strengthening the bonds and spirit of cooperation
between the PAL and NTSC worlds that we feel is a
"must" for the demo scene and the C64 community as a
       whole to survive and prosper.

<D> America and Canada is the prime subject for your
journalism, and you have also distinguished yourselves
as the only true source for news from these countries.
Why do you think every other magazine has neglected
these countries in their news chapters?

<C> Yes, the United States and Canada, being NTSC areas, are
probably the prime targets of coverage for DRIVEN,
although like I said above, PAL countries are also now
included in our sphere of interest (and perhaps influence
:-). If other magazines have neglected coverage of NTSC
countries, it is probably because of a lack of awareness
of activity here. That was - and is - the job of DRIVEN, to
make the world aware of NTSC activity, and to stimulate
an increase in that activity. It seems as if both those
goals are being accomplished. :-) By publishing this
interview, THE PULSE MAGAZINE appears to be leading
to be leading the way in recognizing that the NTSC C64
demo scene really exists and, in fact, will always be a
part of the world-wide C64 community.

<D> It is long ago, that America stopped producing C64 games
       - and computers even. Today the PC and various game
machines rule the market, and therefore you must feel
somewhat of a dinosaur. What does it feel like, to be
working on a C64 in 1996 - and what does your local
       friends think about it?

<C> Hmm.. feels like a dinosaur? Is that meant to imply that
some people think the C64 is dead or dying in our part
of the world? We think that is not the case now, and will
not be so in the foreseeable future. One fabulous American
company, CMD, is far from dead and is producing more
advanced hardware products for the C64 than Commodore
ever dreamed possible. CMD, along with THRESHOLD
PRODUCTIONS, also produce and distribute MANY original
software releases for the C64 on a continual basis.
LOADSTAR also continues to publish a software oriented
disk magazine for the C64. What does it feel like to work
on a C64 now? Just as good as it did 5 or 10 years ago.
Well, maybe even better, because we can now see that
the C64 is able to keep pace with the modem world - e.g.,
running SLIP at 9600 (without a Swiftlink) in 80 columns
on the Internet - and still not lose the memories and
nostalgia of the earlier years of Archon and Jumpman.

What does my local friends think? Perhaps curious,
amazed, maybe even envious. That I work with a system
as simple yet as powerful as a C64. But most of my
friends know I have been crazy for years :-) (Others
who know me might say "Friends? What friends?" :-)

<D> The Internet has worked wonders for the
communication between American and Canadian C64
sceners. What has the Internet done for DRIVEN as a
magazine, and what do you think the Internet can do to
improve the C64 scene in the future?

<C> The Internet has indeed worked wonders - not only
between American and Canadian sceners, but for the
entire C64 scene world-wide. In my opinion, the growth
of the Internet has been the single biggest factor in
changing what, I think we would all agree, was a
declining scene infra-structure and turning it into a
       productive and even growing entity.
It has allowed people who only knew each other from
greets in scrolls or scratchy voices on conference calls
to communicate with each other on a more continual
basis and develop deeper "scene" working relationship
and friendship. Personal case in point: I knew ELWYX
only from his STYLE demo and utilities until I "met"
him on IRC several years ago. He did not know me at all.
Later, after getting to know each other through Internet
interaction, he asked me to help on his new demo
magazine endeavor, which he said he wanted to call
       "DRIVEN" :-)

DRIVEN was born near the beginning of the current
Internet growth boom, so it has indeed benefited from,
if not made possible by, the Internet. While BBS's
world-wide and mail swapping (mostly in Europe) are
both major forms of spreading for DRIVEN, the Internet,
with its FTP sites, e-mail, DCC, and now Web Pages,
has provided the real backbone of the magazine's
distribution, I believe. Of course, from the beginning
almost all of the articles from DRIVEN, as well as the
vast majority of the coordination for its production,
have been without the Net, and has allowed for a much
more "world-wide" flavor to DRIVEN than would
       otherwise have been possible.

For the future, I am sure the Internet will continue to
grow in importance in the life of the C64 scene, providing
not only file distribution, but person to person
communications - ideas and knowledge sharing. In the
technical arena, Daniel Dalman (Poldi on IRS) plans to
continue developing SLIP interface software and
applications for the C64. There has been an indication of
a Net browser for the C64.

BBS's will probably continue as part of the C64
community for quite some time, but they will likely find
it increasingly important to connect with the Internet
themselves. There have been several instances of Net
BBS's that cater to C64 files. And I have even seen an
experiment in Texas whereby a C128 BBS has been
connected to the Net (through a PC, I believe) to allow
       logon and full interaction.

DRIVEN, of course, will not only continue to cover
developments in Net technology as they apply to the C64,
but will make full use of them as well.

<D> Although DRIVEN is a demo-magazine only, it is read by
most types of people in the scene - also the heavily
engaged cracking-groups. What do you think of other
magazines, those that perhaps concentrate more on that
       part of the scene?
<C> Well, let me scope my answer by reminding you that I
currently am a member of TRC+SCS, and have a lot of
friends in other cracking groups as well :-) So you might
say my interest transcend just the demo scene. I also
must admit that, unfortunately, I don't have nearly the
time I would like for C64 activities - a case which is
most likely VERY typical of most of us. So magazine
reading time for me very often gets squeezed out. Also,
many magazines are PAL only, which makes it impossible
for me to see them. I wish it were possible for all
magazines to be NTSC/PAL compatible, although I know
it is difficult to do without help for some PAL productions.
Any NTSC fixers reading this willing to help with this?

In principle, though, I have no problem with whatever
area a magazine chooses to cover or not cover, as long
as they do a good job at what they choose to do and
they DO it (release) as often as possible. The cracking
scene is a big part of the C64 community, and as long as
there is interest and activity there, it should be reported.
Demos, games, utilities, magazines. All are important in
their own way, all are a part of the world-wide C64
       community.

<D> Thank you for spending some time with us. I wish
you the best of luck in the future, but before we go,
please tell us the future plans for DRIVEN!

<C> Ahh yes, the future for DRIVEN. Well, that part of DRIVEN
is mostly in the hands of ELWYX, although opinions from
our readers are always very important. In that vein,
ELWYX once told me that in his initial thinking, if DRIVEN
made 10 issues, he would feel fulfilled. Well, as you know,
DRIVEN # 12 was released in March, with # 13 and beyond
in the works. So, luckily, ELWYX has apparently extended
his "fulfillment" criteria, because we have no plans to
shut down in the foreseeable future :-)

Currently, the DRIVEN distribution format is a single,
crunched file, read into memory once, with sections
uncrunched in memory on demand. While this provides
for a nice, compact file format, it does constrain the
maximum size of each issue and causes delays in
       publishing submitted articles.

So, we are considering switching to an IFFL-type file
format, with the selection read into memory and
uncrunched on demand. This will allow for more content
in DRIVEN when the need arises. It also would allow
for some "outfit" enhancements, if that ever becomes
desirable. Any new format, however, will remain PAL-
NTSC and emulator compatible as it is now.

As I mentioned before, DRIVEN will continue to expand
its coverage of our PAL partners in the non-NTSC parts of
the world. Hopefully, this will work as a two-way street,
enhancing further the cooperation and sharing among all
       demo-sceners world-wide, that has already shown a
steady increase in the years since DRIVEN started.

The one thing that will NOT change in the future is
DRIVEN's dedication to its primary purpose - the
promotion of the NTSC and world-wide demo scene.

I would like to thank DUKE for asking me to participate
in THE PULSE this month. The more we all talk TO each
other and work WITH each other, the longer and stronger
our common and cherished C64 scene will be. Let us
always remember that, as we look towards the future
       together.

       /COOLHAND, co-editor of DRIVEN!

OVERALL CHARTS - APRIL 1996 Edited by KBS
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the X'96 party edition of the Overall Charts! This
is your usual host, KBS, who's on the line for you...

Unlike what some people think, this chapter is NOT dropped!
Although it's been a while since the last appearance of this
chapter, it's still here. It might also seem as if this chapter
has turned into a "only-released-in-party-issues" thing, but I
can assure you, that's not the case either. The fact is, that I
have been facing a rather serious supply problem lately. But,
that should be solved by now.

Nevertheless, if you should happen to be in a position of being
able to supply me with all the latest magazines, please don't
hesitate to contact me at:

BETTER CHART-CHAPTERS?
--------------------------------------------------------------

I'm of course referring to DUKEs article in the March Edition of
THE PULSE MAGAZINE, about a time for a change. Sure it's
possible to make better chart-chapters. As DUKE said, charts
have always been a regular inventory in a decent magazine,
and it is a common edition to all magazines today. So, people
expect to see some charts when they read a magazine. But, I
wonder how many people really remember the charts after
having scanned through the catagories, just to find the one
catagory of which ones occupation resides in...?

It is therefore obvious to create a whole new concept within
the charts. Something that would make people more
interested in the results. Force them to stay a bit longer on
every page. The way I see it, every little renewal in
diskmagazines today, will seem as a revolution, compared to
the printed media for instance. If you're interested in a better
chart-chapter, one should ask oneself a few questions, like
where should the votes come from? And what do you want to
know? Well, let's all start from one end, namely with...

THE VOTESHEET
The votesheet is a thing which is both loved and hated by the
masses. Loved for its backside, the place for all sorts of more
or less usefull information, but hated for its sometimes rather
confusing frontpage, which you wished you never laid eyes on.
I remember spending an awful lot of time with votesheets, not
only filling them, but also spreading them. When I stopped
filling out votesheets, I think it was because I thought it was
too much work for nothing. A normal votesheet is just a cheap
A4 photocopy of some black'n'white drawings made with ink. I
don't see what's so special about that. So, I don't wonder
why some people grow tired of filling out votesheets.

Another thing which could improve the chart-chapter, is...
THE VOTERS CHOICES
People needs to be reminded over and over again, who to vote
for. Like in the commercials, where they arrange large
campaigns to make you go buy a certain brand of some
commodity. Or better yet, like the american president
elections. If you don't remind the voters again and again,
they'll be forced to vote for somebody else, although they
would rather vote for you, if you just reminded them that
you're worth voting for.

Last, but not least, the major key to better chart-chapters, is
of course...

THE PRESENTATION OF THE CHARTS
When it comes to presentation of the charts in general, people
have not been very creative. It's almost always done the
same way, namely with a text-based list of boring statistics.
But, statistics doesn't have to be boring. Just have a look at
almost any news broadcast on TV, and see for yourself how
statistics are made interesting. This could very well be the
next revolution within the charts of a diskmagazine. But, ask
yourself, what is it you want to know? Do you want to know
that some dude who received only 1 point was ranked 263 on
the swapper-chart, aswell as 20 others? Why not be creative
and show the charts with graphs or pies or something like
that?!

Ok, to sum things up... These are the keys to achieve in order
to make better chart-chapters:

1. Votesheets of which the design matches the contents of
   the magazine.
2. Making the voters aware of who to vote for.
3. A visual presentation of the charts rather than a
   text-based.
It's evidently that we're facing a period, where changes are
due to occur. So, therefore we urge you to hand in your opinion
and ideas on how to improve the chart-chapter of today.
Please use the before mentioned address or send me (KBS) a
fax. The number is as follows: +45 75 72 1772.

BEST DEMOGROUPS - APRIL 1996 Comments
--------------------------------------------------------------

* CENSOR is back on the chart again! It is strange though,
since the members in CENSOR are not active under the
CENSOR label. These days they're producing games for
  the CHERRY SOFTWARE label instead.

* OXYRON still in the lead, although REFLEX has gathered the
top spot in the latest magazines. This is of course a result of
the really cool "Mathematica" demo, which QUISS showed
up with at The Party 5, along with 2 other demos.

* FAIRLIGHT seems to have given up everything, them being
the one of the two that left this chart. It's not only in the
  demogroups-chart the 3 FLT-letters are missing...

* A rather reformed NO NAME, who lined up 2 new demos at
TP5, failed to impress the voters, although they tried hard...

BEST CODERS - APRIL 1996 Comments
--------------------------------------------------------------

* FUBEN/OXYRON was once again considered by the voters as
a fully qualified candidate to the top 10 of coders, as we
watch him take possession of the 9th place.

* XL from XLCUS SOFTWARE has shown much activity lately.
We'll probably see him enter the charts real soon.

* QUISS/REFLEX finally made it to the top 3, but probably for
the last time, since he announced that because of a lack of
competition, he would resign from the world of programming.

* SLAMMER/CAMELOT, TTS/OXYRON and KM/TABOO all
dropped down 3 places, due to a rather unforseen neglect of
  votes.

BEST GRAPHICIANS - APRIL 1996 Comments
--------------------------------------------------------------

* It appears that PROPAGANDA Magazines choice for
graphician of the year 1995, JOE/WRATH DESIGN, also are in
favour of most of the voters. Eventhough it's a close race for
the number one position, JOE deserves some credit for the
fine job he did for DOMINATION.

* CUPID/AVANTGARDE and OGAMI/FAIRLIGHT, respectively
at pos. 9 and 7 in the December-chart, switched places.

* The re-appearance of polish ASTAROTH/AGONY DESIGN, who
joined up with AVANTGARDE lately, put him on the 8th place,
while BIZ KID/CAMELOT, who we've also seen in here
before, only managed to re-enter at position 10.

BEST MUSICIANS - APRIL 1996 Comments
--------------------------------------------------------------

* The incredible popular PVCF/REFLEX, who fell down a
position in the Party Edition, took back the 2nd place again,
  right infront of SYNDROM/TIA/CREST.

* ZYRON, who lately has signed up with F4CG, said goodbye to
his year long service in ANTIC PRODUCTIONS, and at the
same time hello to a small step up the ladder to a 7th place,
after being used to hang around 8th to 10th place for quite
  some time now...

* Also FANTA/BASS/OXYRON took a step up the ladder, while
JEROEN TEL/FOCUS hit rock bottom. He could be expected
to storm the charts soon though, as rumours said he would
return to active state of mind, serving as a gamemusician.

--------------------------------------------------------------

* If it wasn't for ATLANTIS, HITMEN - who have shown a lot
activity lately - would've entered the charts. I'm sure we'll
see them among the top 5 soon.

* It's obviously a bit of surprise to see HARDCORE still on the
chart. They'll need to work a lot harder to stay on the chart!

* CHROMANCE and SUCCESS+TRC all shaped up, making the
groups work more efficiently. This makes a threat to AVT's
otherwise established 1st place, and with a few of its
members having stopped their activities (DERBYSHIRE and
INTRUDER), we can expect a new number one soon!

* EXCESS+ACRISE has, after a rather good start as a co-op,
failed to astonish the voters, which resulted in a downfall of
  3 positions.

* CBA/SCS+TRC takes over HAIN/F4CGs usual 3rd place,
while HAIN is falling again. This has probably something to
do with HAINs absence from the active crackingscene...

* DODGER, who used to work for HITMEN, has signed up with
AVANTGARDE to relieve JACK ALIEN in his work. Both of
them remain solid at their previous positions though.

* In general, this chart has not differed much, although we can
just spot PLAYBOY/F4CG entering the charts again, creating
  a bit of excitement.

that the magazine is back to stay...

* THE PULSE MAGAZINE, which are now produced under the
SHAPE label, has found it's place in the charts, so it would
seem that a lot has to be done yet, to receive a better
position in the chart. A lot SHAPING UP perhaps...!

* INTRUDER/AVANTGARDE still on top. But for how long? The
german megaswapper has announced his retirement some
time ago, so I suppose a change in the top is on its way.

* Another german megaswapper, the co-editor of Vandalism
News, BIZARRE/ONSLAUGHT, was finally caught and
therefore had to stop his swapping activities. Nevertheless,
the voters felt that he should move 2 positions up, aswell as
  DERBYSHIRE RAM/AVANTGARDE and SHUZE/AFL...

* SPERMBIRD/EXCESS+ACRISE/CHROMANCE is, as the only
swapper this time, confronted with a lower position than in
the previous chart. But, he's still a potential candidate to
the top spot, so it shall be interesting to see how this chart
  will look in the future!

BEST OVERALL GROUPS - APRIL 1996 Comments
--------------------------------------------------------------

* AVANTGARDE tops almost every chart this month, so why
should they not be the number one on the Overall Chart
  aswell?!

* CAMELOT seems to be loosing a bit of popularity lately. It's
really a shame that most of their skillful members aren't
being more productive. CRUZER/CML told us that he had
some 20 demoparts ready for their new demo, but as
CRUZER is busy working on his new platformgame, it might
take a while before we see another sign of life from the
  knights of the round table...

* New appearances are swedish ANTIC PRODUCTIONS, who
re-entered the chart, this time at the 9th position, directly
followed by CHROMANCE, whom we've never seen on this
  chart before!

ADVERTISEMENTS Edited by KBS
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the X'96 edition of The Advertisements - as usual
edited and hosted by yours truly, KBS!

Get a hold of the new address-sheet of mine - it should be
available at the X'96 party - so, if you still haven't advertised
in this chapter, then this is your chance! Be sure to visit our
booth at the party, or send them by mail to my usual address:

KBS, XXXXXX X, XXXXXX XXXXX, XXXX XXXXXX, XXXXXXX

Due to public demand, all net-addresses, phone-numbers, fax-
numbers and BBS-numbers will now be published along with
your usual mail-address. So, don't forget to send them in as
well!

JUICE DEVELOPMENTS
--------------------------------------------------------------

Searching for a company to publish the new C64 Juice-game
"Baby Man" (almost finished).

I'm also very eager to get in contact with anyone who know
something about SNES, NES or Game-Boy!
