+ WELCOME TO + + THE PULSE MAGAZINE - THE MARCH EDITION + -------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the 22nd edition of the world-wide distributed scripture THE PULSE MAGAZINE - released by SHAPE on a monthly basis. This is your magazine guide to the World of information within the Cracking, Demo and Modem-scene. We send our respect and greetings to our friends/colleagues; PROPAGANDA, DOMINATION, SKYHIGH, VANDALISM NEWS, RELAX, NITRO, IMMORTAL FLASH and ROCK'N'ROLE. Also a giant hello to all our friends and supporters world-wide. INSTRUCTIONS : Use JOYSTICK in PORT II and move LEFT/ RIGHT to switch between pages. Press FIRE to reach the menu. COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR PREFACE -------------------------------------------------------------- "All I know is, that I know nothing" - SOCRATES! Welcome dear fellow sceners to another edition of THE PULSE. We are back on the road with yet another packed number, featuring heaps of crammed pages, with the best of information and entertainment available in the scene. We have found a purpose in the scene, it is to capture moment by moment of scene history. It is what we do best, and we hope to find your support in our everlasting quest. The words spoken by Socrates may easily be misinterpreted, as nothing can come from nothing - and it is therefore impossible to know nothing. But the vastness of possible knowledge is immense. It would be utopia to believe, that anyone can learn to master so much knowledge - therefore his words. In the light of that much information, I know nothing! The month of March reveals the beginning of Spring. Many of us have looked forward to this moment, as it has been a long and hard winter. In Denmark, we have suffered what could be described as an ICE-winter. It has decreased the amount of hours spend outside, but increased the activity on the C64 immensely - this has been noticable in the scene, as we have had a couple of very active months world-wide. But as wonderful as Spring may be, the scene also offer us another event to look forward to. In April the Easter holiday is the date for the next C64 event, the X96 in Holland. It was first introduced last year, and was a smashing success, though it is a C64 arranged event. This year even more people have declared their interest in participating, which gives a promise of an excellent party, with a great number of people showing up. We at THE PULSE MAGAZINE will not miss out on such a great event, and have therefore decided to participate. That is, if everything goes our way. The many previoAs parties held in Northern Europe has revealed one odd fact. It appears these events are always visited by the same crowd - the same people, seldom do new people show up. By new people, I mean those who have yet to attend a computer-held party. I therefore hope, that the great number of C64-freaks, who have decided not to go, will reconsider, and decide to go. The scene holds thousands of people, and yet only hundreds attend these parties. If we had more interest in the social part of the scene, this number would be higher. Let us show the PC and AMIGA scene, that we can easily hold our own packed parties - because we care about the scene, the computer and pure fun. Happy C64 March! DUKE, General Editor! board report
+ THE BOARD REPORT + ---------------- - March 1996 - --------- Another month - Another year...THE PULSE MAGAZINE is still here, as will it be for a long time.. Before starting off, I'd like to thank anyone who've send me e-mail on the internet - I'll do my best to get back to you all as fast as possible.. Others who wish to get in touch with me regarding anything about this chapter, please place an e-mail for me on the following address: C01@DEC5102.AABC.DK --------------- From last issue and in the future, we will be putting in a couple of extra pages, containing the updated numbers of the various boards around, in Europe aswell as in the states, and therefore, any informations about changes is extremely wel- come placed to me by e-mail aswell..! -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- A couple of new things and changes happened the last week.. CHROMANCE found yet another board in the US, this one named THE BASS PLANET, and sysop, SCRATCHER (that NOT being the same guy who was in PARAMOUNT, though..), joined the gang and began calling out a little aswell.. The board is Cyborg Modded C*Base, very nice, and can be reached on XXX-XXX-XXXX.. Due to lacking support from HARDCORE, GALACTUS, sysop of GALAXY, decided to leave them to join MOTIV 8 who was re- cently put able to call out to the states regulary again.. How- ever, in the end of the month, sysop and board was removed from the list of MOTIV 8 members, due to internal conflicts.. GALAXY -WAS- MOTIV 8 USHQ for nearly 3 weeks, when they decided to split, some by choice - others by force! -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- Danish MOTIV 8 Euro-HQ, MOUNT OLYMPUS, turned into the official EHQ for THE PULSE MAGAZINE. Action increased tre- mendously here, as the board was routed with a 1-800 number along with german HITMEN-hq, MYSTICAL PARADISE.. Both boards were connected at the same number and two different security codes.. Brilliant work by Peacemaker/HITMEN, one MUST say! :-) ..even calling via the internet is possible!!! More on THE MYSTICAL PARADISE, according to sysop, Peacemaker/HITMEN, some major surprises are coming up. Also, a harddisk should be on the way in order to be able to present about 42 megabytes of wares.. Now, 42 megs ain't much on a PC, but to hold C64-software there's more than enough to sadisfy everybody.. -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- A new board was opened in Belgium named METAL IMPACT. This boards runs as EHQ for Belgian group ROLE, and it can be reached at +XX-(X)XX-XXXXXX.. Multi noded, some say!!! STATE OF THE ART, formerly EHQ of SUCCESS*TRC is appa- rently still online supposively still running for the group, alt- hough sysop, CAVRON, was kicked out of the group last month. According to CBA/TRC*SCS, Cavron might not even know he has been kicked yet.. Talk about a sysop wearing blinders, huh? :-) VIRTUAL LIGHT, a new board in Sweden, was opened by TAO/TRIAD. The board runs as second swedish HQ for TRIAD and European HQ for american magazine, DRIVEN.. The board runs C*Base v3.23 and the number is +XX-(X)XXX-XXXXX.. THE PULSE will be investigating further in the near future!!! -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- LIQUID PALACE, the long awaited and promised-to-go-online- board, sysop'ed by Sphere/STYLE is finally online, running Deathlok Modded C*Base.. As of yet it is unknown if this board is independent, but my guess is that it is STYLE HQ.. Either way, the board can be reached on XXX-XXX-XXXX... Third board in the 609-area...quite an explosion there! :-) Also in THIS case, THE PULSE will be exploiding further in the near future! FORPLAY, old RED SECTOR and TALENT famous HQ was taken online again by Count Zero/SUCCESS*TRC who wish to make it clear, that this is his own Forplay! The board is strict- ly telnetable (internet, that is..) by telnet to 193.101.45.68 DREAM PARK is now also blacklisted by the AT&T/MCI, which just is a list growing by the minute, I'm affraid.. Get a new number and the problem is solved...but STILL... :-( -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- Over the past year a certain Canadian board has been making a rather big name of both itself and the sysop. The name of this board is THE FINAL GENOCIDE, sysop is DEVIANT, is a mem- ber of CHROMANCE and run the board for this very group. We thought it might be somewhat interesting for our distinguish- ed readers to learn a thing or two about this board, so we caught up with DEVIANT and forced him a bit.. :-) DEVIANT/CHROMANCE reporting for THE PULSE MAGAZINE: -------------------------------------- I have been running boards for about 7 years now. I started running my first board with a program called DMBBS about 7 years ago and not until about 2 years ago, I switched over to C*Base, and that is when I started hanging out on the scene. You could say I have been around the scene for the past 2 years or maybe a bit more. -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- Mr.Friend Fusion has been one of the greatest contributors for helping me out with FINAL GENOCIDE in the past year, helping me out with some of the graphics and the basic concept of it. I have been with CHROMANCE for about 7 months, and before them I was in PANDORA, and I really enjoy the group. However FINAL GENOCIDE is probably still not well known over the scene, but that is mainly due because of the boards location being from Canada and all. I wish I could get the recognition that some of the other boards get. Equipment used is: 175 megs CMD with Jiffy dos, 1581, 1541, 2400 bauds, Cyborg modded C*Base.. ---------------------------------------- THE FINAL GENOCIDE - CHROMANCE WHQ can be reached at XXX-XXX-XXXX ---------------------------------------- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- Recently a new board named COVERAGE was opened in Germany sysop'ed by Red Rock/EXCESS+ACRISE.. We asked him for details and he gave us everything we asked for.. RED ROCK/EXCESS+ACRISE reporting for PULSE MAGAZINE: -------------------------------------------------------------- First time Coverage was online in early 1995, we tried to make a board just for Excess-members. But we failed, as I only had two drives and only three members had a modem, and we also had two boards (Deadzone and Sanitarium). In May 1995 things went wrong, and till we began our re- organisation and then our co-operation, I saw no reason in opening a public board. When we talked about the co-op the first time, we said an own board is important, but which sysop wants to join a "sinking ship", which went into... -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- ..a co-operation with a just re-build crew like Acrise. I saw the only way to come to a board in opening my own. COVERAGE went online on December 1st, 1995 under the former name "DIS-CHARGE", which was spelled wrong and changed to "DECHARGE" for two days, till we changed the name again. In December COVERAGE just had 2 1541-drives. On the first was the system, the subs/e-mails were toget- her on the second drive. All in all I had a maximum of 300 blocks for wares. But things went good, as I got more and more very active callers. The biggest problem was just that I had big problems with my system, which made it impossible to call with 2400 baud, as the callers were kicked out mostly. -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- Since early January the problem is solved, as it was my modem which caused all those crashes. I took on a new one, and now also calls with 2400 are possible. Next I got 2 more drives, which gives me the possibility to have up to 3 wares-drives. Now I have one 1571 for the 0-1 wares, one 1541 for the request-drive and one for the subs/ e-mails and some blocks for private stuff.. COVERAGE runs: 1 new Commodore 64 1 highscreen 2400 modem 1 1571 drive 3 1541 drives ..and that's it.. -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- COVERAGE is also the HQ for our two magazines NITRO and EPISTULA. You can post news, give votes (only for NITRO!), and give us your advert for both magazines on COVERAGE.. - -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- - + COVERAGE + EXCESS and ACRISE euro-hq +XX/XXXX-XXXXX Sysop: Red Rock/EX+ACR Co-sysop: Sentinel/EX+ACR Co-sysop: Beat-Up/EX+ACR C*Base - Moses modded! - -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- - -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- LATEST UPDATE IN BOARD NUMBERS.. THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: ------- * THE DUNGEON and EDGE OF MIDNITE is still down. EDGE OF MIDNITE will be removed from the list as of next month, unless a miracle happens and it makes a return before then. The board has been down now for over a year! THE DUNGEON will still figure on the list for a while, though.. * When calling THE FINAL GENOCIDE, remember the little trick with the "#11"-code...Mentioned in the edition of last month. Without the code - No admittance! * WARES AQUARIUM seems to be back online after its major crash. Nice to see that not ALL sysops lose their interest in the scene just because they have to face a few problems! :) -More!- THE BOARD REPORT.....................................................March 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------- Next month we will be going one on one with TAO of TRIAD, who've just opened his own board in Sweden which is called VIRTUAL LIGHT and functions as HQ for TRIAD and EHQ for the American NTSC-based magazine DRIVEN.. Along with that, there has been rumours going around about openings of atleast two more boards in the month to come.. That, AND more - NEXT month.. (Dayam, it is just ME, or am I beginning to sound like soapdish speaker here..?!) :-).. Finishing off, remember that everything that might of the even SLIGHTEST interest is extremely welcome e-mailed to me at my internet hacienda: C01@DEC5102.AABC.DK, or send me a piece of e-mail on MOUNT OLYMPUS (user #2!).. CROSSFIRE/MOTIV 8 - February 26th, 1996.

+ NEWS JOURNAL - THE MARCH SCENE REPORT + -------------------------------------------------------------- We bring you another exclusive update of the current scene situation, as it looks in the eyes of the News Journal reporters. Join us every month, for an inside look at the news with competent views. We would like to present the most thorough coverage of the scene, but we need your help to do that. Lend us a helping hand, and give your support. NEWS JOURNAL is hosted by DUKE. Newsgathering by CROSSFIRE, MR. WAX and DUKE! Address : XXXX XXXXX XXX XXXXXXXXX XX XXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Telephone : +XX - XX XX XX XX (15.00-24.00 CET). E-Mail : AH-PULSE@CYBERNET.DK ACRISE + EXCESS (GER, HOL, POL, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- The German based co-operation, ACRISE+EXCESS, was able to welcome back an old name to the scene. The man in question is no other, than the former phreaker and swapper, MENDRAKE. He decided to join forces with ACRISE+EXCESS, and in edition, he has put up a brand new board for them. This board is called THE DRAGON'S TOWER. MENDRAKE has already made his return known, calling several American boards lately. ACRISE+EXCESS also added other members, with the swappers, CREB and VAGUE, joining up with the co-operation. But perhaps the most highlighted event in ACRISE+EXCESS, was the signing of the American board, GALAXY, which was formerly owned by MOTIV 8. The sysop, GALACTUS, who also teamed up with ACRISE+EXCESS, was upset about the lacking support from the MOTIV 8 members. ACRISE + EXCESS (GER, HOL, POL, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- The European members however, were in no position to call the board, and therefore felt his criticism was uncalled for. The two parties went their separate ways, and now GALACTUS is running GALAXY as the new ACRISE+EXCESS World Headquarters. BOARDS : GALAXY XXX - XXX - XXXX COVERAGE +XX - XXXX - XXXXX THE DRAGON'S TOWER +XX - XXXX - XXXXXX MEMBERS : Alien Prophet, Authentic, Artex, Beat Up, Bordeaux, Cat, Creb, Decoy, Echo, Fli, Gash, Hornet, H-Bloxx, Master S, Mendrake, MHD, Nasty Boy, Red Rock, Riddler, RHX, Sentinel, Spermbird, Vague and Twynn. ALPHA FLIGHT (GER, HOL, POL, USA) -------------------------------------------------------------- The former leader, MAX, was able to announce a successful finish to his exams. According to ALPHA FLIGHT, MAX graduated with honours, securing himself a grade equivalent to an A. Meanwhile the group itself is doing well, and welcomed back SKID ROW to the group - he will operate as a coder, fixer and graphician. With SKID ROW back, they also signed on ARCHANGEL and FLASH from Poland. ARCHANGEL will however remain in VERMES as his second group. But the biggest name to sign with ALPHA FLIGHT, was the former member of PARAMOUNT, RICK. The infamous swapper from the old days, decided to return to the good old C64 for ALPHA FLIGHT. - ALPHA FLIGHT (GER, HOL, POL, USA) -------------------------------------------------------------- The German phreaker, CHOTAIRE, appears to be back in an active role for the flight once again. He decided to bring his board, THE PIRATE ISLAND, back on-line again. Whether he will be calling overseas again is unknown as of yet. ALPHA FLIGHT decided to join the wave of groups joining the Internet. They signed on the FTP-site, COMMODORE. BOARDS : HOLIDAY INN CAMBODIA XXX - XXX - XXXX THE EVIL ISLAND XXX - XXX - XXXX ESCAPADE +XX - XXXX - XXXXXX FTP : COMMODORE FAST.CO.ZA 6464 MEMBERS : Ancient Mariner, Archangel, Calypso, Chotaire, Cryonic, Flash, Ignorance, Marc, Max, The Mercenary, Pol Pot, Ream, Rick, Shuze, Skid Row, Skinhead, Styx, Xenox and Zapotek. AMBUSH (SWE) -------------------------------------------------------------- The Swedish group, AMBUSH, announced plans to make 1996 their breakthrough year. AMBUSH plans to release a trackmo called POWERRAIN, featuring REMARQUE as main coder. This demo should hit the drives in early April month, whereas another demo, CYBERRAIN, has been planned for release at the TRIBUTE this summer in Sweden. AMBUSH furthermore admitted two members in the group, COUGAR and CYBORG, who will both feature as graphicians. They are on trial for the moment though. MEMBERS : Macx, Hirer, Remarque, Quasar, Cougar and Cyborg. AVANTGARDE (GER, USA, ENG, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- The world famous trader, DERBYSHIRE RAM, has announced plans to drop a lot of contacts, and to lower his activity immensely. The reason for this decision is yet unknown, but it may be a result acculminated for personal reasons. It would seem this decision is spreading among the members, as INTRUDER also announced plans to decrease his amount of contacts. There were other problems on the AVANTGARDE agenda lately, with SUICIDE claiming the desire to leave the scene. The reason for his decision is unknown, but he may never return. Also RENEGADE has had problems to play an active role in AVANTGARDE, mainly due to his exams. But according to JACK ALIEN, AVANTGARDE is currently searching for a new fixer to fulfil SUICIDE's position in the group. AVANTGARDE (GER, USA, ENG, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- AVANTGARDE should apparently already have found a possible candidate, which is currently being tested for his qualifications. BOARDS : DREAM PARK XXX - XXX - XXXX MEMBERS : Astaroth, Chameleon, Cupid, Cybersurfer, Cyborg, Deff, Derbyshire Ram, Druid, Eliminator, Intruder, Jack Alien, Jack Daniels, Metal, Rage, Renegade, Skywolf, Thorn, Tricom, Trimone and Weasel. CHROMANCE (HUN, GER, USA, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- BASS PLANET, which CHROMANCE revealed an interest for last month, was officially added to the list of CHROMANCE boards. It takes over the role as WHQ, whereas FINAL GENOCIDE becomes the Canadian HQ. The sysop of BASS PLANET, SCRATCHER, also teamed up with the CHROMANCE team. Meanwhile the sysop of FINAL GENOCIDE moved, which means the board got a brand new number - which can be noted in the CHROMANCE data's. MR.WAX told NEWS JOURNAL, that he was busted by the Hungarian police for using a fake phone-card. Apparently this fake phone-card was one purchased by a Hungarian hacker, and today these phone-cards are widely spread, and thereby also sought heavily after by the police. CHROMANCE (HUN, GER, USA, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- But according to MR.WAX, he may get off with a warning. This is, if this case does not collide with the previous problem he suffered, after being busted for using a fake-id. MR.WAX will have further problems, as his phone will be disconnected in the near future. He has neglected to pay his high phone-bill, and is hoping the Hungarian telecom will buy in on his story, that he did not make the calls himself. CHROMANCE has witnessed a great return of former inactive members to the side. The talented Polish musician in CHROMANCE, SAGE, decided to pick up on his activity once again. He therefore returned to the popular side, sparkling with brand new music. In edition, an old-timer from Poland, HEDGEHOG, has returned to the scene as well, and also teamed up with CHROMANCE. CHROMANCE (HUN, GER, USA, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- The promising Texan scener, ZEYEX/CHROMANCE is back from a short break, and started off with the supplying of a new American pinball game. EDGE OF MIDNIGHT and COUNTY JAIL are currently down, and according to CHROMANCE, they have no idea when they will be back on-line again, if ever. BOARDS : BASS PLANET XXX - XXX - XXXX FINAL GENOCIDE XXX - XXX - XXXX OVERDOSE +XX - XXXX - XXXX MEMBERS : Alias Medron, AMC, B0lee, Deviant, Fusion, Griff, Hedgehog, Immortal, Jaydee, Janee, Jazzy D, Lion, Lotus, MC Byte, Motion, Mr. Wax, Pete, Sage, Scratcher, Skud, Skull, Spermbird, Syco, Techno, Vector, Wozio, XXL, Zar and Zeyex. EMPIRE (CAN, USA) -------------------------------------------------------------- Whatever happened to the good old French Canadian based fixing-group, EMPIRE? Well, we found out, as we meet up with former member, INTRUDER, and posed him with the before mentioned question. "Oh la la EMPIRE? Good question. Well, the old crew members like EXTREMIST, BOOZE and me have all left the scene to a more normal life. But I know that RICH and his bros have taken the group in charge, but I do not know if they are still there". INTRUDER was working as a fixer with BOOZE up to a while ago, when he decided to call it quits. He explains here what they are up to today. "I have talked to EXTREMIST about 1 year ago, but I do talk with BOOZE everyday. He even works at the same place as me, as a programmer". EMPIRE (CAN, USA) -------------------------------------------------------------- "His desk is just beside mine, so we have no problem communicating" claims INTRUDER happy. But INTRUDER denies a possible comeback to the scene, even though EMPIRE is a fixing-group seriously missed by European wares groups, who are tired of having to fix all their own games. "We still talk about the good old C64 days. But neither me or BOOZE wants to go back fixing those damn games" stated INTRUDER exclusive to NEWS JOURNAL. EQUINOXE (GER) -------------------------------------------------------------- The German group, which is probably most famed for their production, INGENIOUS BRAINS, was reformed to bring back another magazine to the spotlight. But INGENIOUS BRAINS is not subject for a comeback, but in fact the delay-phenomenon of 1995, SHOUT. Many may remember SHOUT as the popular one-termer, that mysteriously faded away. But according to former editor, WARP, he plans to bring it back to the scene, only this time without FAIRLIGHT as a playing part. Read more about the expected comeback in this months edition of MEET THE PRESS. MEMBERS : WARP, ANTIFAN and MACX. F4CG (BEL, ITA, SWE, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- The crime boss of F4CG, SOLAR, is back in an active state on the American boards. He returned recently after a break of more than 6 months, but now he is finally on the boards taking part of the everyday operation of F4CG. The infamous Swedish musician, ZYRON, picked up his long-term roots from the Swedish demo-group, ANTIC, and made a surprising move to the largest group in the scene today, F4CG. BOARDS : DREAM PARK XXX - XXX - XXXX FTP : INTERPARK BBS.CC.UNIUD.IT WWW : http://www.algonet.se/-motley/propa.htm MEMBERS : $ixx, Antitrack, Aristo, Bitman, Cha$h, Cyborg, Cybersurfer, Decoder, Devil, Draz, Fen1, Hain, King, Maja, Morris, Motley, Mr. Alpha, Neotec, Newscopy, Playboy, Smasher, Sneaper, Solar, Therion, Total Caos, Walker, Worm and Zyron. HITMEN (GER, SWE) -------------------------------------------------------------- The German cracking-group, HITMEN, has revealed plans to enter the X96 demo-competition - with a brand new demo developed by GROEPAZ. But before people start putting a demo-group label on HITMEN, it should be told, that they only planned the demo for fun, and therefore have no further ambition with the legal side of scene activities. Meanwhile HITMEN signed on ZORE of HARDCORE. He joined the side as a phreaker and graphician. BOARDS : THE DUNGEON XXX - XXX - XXXX MYSTICAL PARADISE +XX - XXX - XXX - XXX WARES AQUARIUM +XX - XXX - XXXX MEMBERS : Arrogance, Curlin, Dr. Doom, Groepaz, Hi-Lite, Jihad, Jinx, Lawnmover Man, Moby, Peacemaker, Raze, Racoon, Sabotage, Tyron, Tranziie, The Ministry and Vortex. MOTIV 8 (DEN, GER, USA, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- MOTIV 8 experienced a very active month on the American boards, as most members found ways to rid themselves of previous calling-card problems. Due to the new-found American connection, they burned themselves on the signing of the American based, GALAXY, which is now owner by ACRISE+EXCESS. The sysop of GALAXY, GALACTUS, joined up with MOTIV 8 for thereafter to leave due to previously stated reasons (read more in the ACRISE+EXCESS journal). The debate that surrounded the controversial argument between GALACTUS and MOTIV 8, remains unsolved and currently still ungoing overseas. In an attempt to solve the current board problem facing MOTIV 8, they signed on the American STYLE board, LIQUID PALACE, which now runs as the official WHQ for MOTIV 8. The sysop of LIQUID PALACE, SPHERE, also joined up with MOTIV 8 (DEN, GER, USA, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- MOTIV 8, but will however remain a member of STYLE - which means the board will also remain STYLE WHQ. Meanwhile the Danish MOTIV 8 board, MOUNT OLYMPUS, signed an exclusive deal with THE PULSE MAGAZINE to operate as its EHQ. Just recently MOUNT OLYMPUS experienced an increase of guests, as PEACEMAKER of HITMEN set up a 1-800 number shared with the German HITMEN-board, MYSTICAL PARADISE. This will however only work as an advantage for the American users though. MOTIV 8 has not only been immensely active securing themselves more influence on the boards, they also signed on a deal, that will give them a spot on the Hungarian FTP-site, MOUNT TOKAY. The site is maintained by STAKE/SCS+TRC, and is therefore now shared between SCS+TRC and MOTIV 8. MOTIV 8 is still supporting INTERPARK though. MOTIV 8 (DEN, GER, USA, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- The long awaited demo-section of MOTIV 8, which has been planned for a while, was finally introduced to the market as an official section of the group. The leaders of the demo-section will be ICEBALL and GREENFROG of MOTIV 8. In an attempt to secure themselves new and talented members, they therefore signed on the Polish coder, LYON of FENIKS. He is amongst other products, most famed for the coding of the TRACK PLAYER, which is used by several musicians today. SPIDER of MOTIV 8 is currently taking a forced break from his scene activities, as he was recently committed to a hospital. The specific reason for his visit to the hospital remains unknown, but he is said to return to his scene activities in the near future. MOTIV 8 (DEN, GER, USA, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- The latest updated news will therefore result in a change of the group information. Here it is! According to HOMEBOY of ONSLAUGHT, it is just a matter of getting the graphics done, that separates their plans from becoming reality on time for the competition. ORIGO (FIN) -------------------------------------------------------------- The infamous Finnish demo-group, ORIGO, has already announced the desire to release a brand new demo in the year of 1996. But to clarify this rumour, we meet up with Finnish member, DESTINO, and asked him if there was any truth to that rumour. "Might be, but one never knows" stated DESTINO to NEWS JOURNAL. He continued explaining, that the remaining members of ORIGO have the bad habit of being active, in a very casual sense. But fortunately DESTINO was optimistic about the possibility of a brand new ORIGO demo, claiming they should have released one at the Christmas '95 party in Denmark. But due to various problems it was never released, and instead they plan on putting it out in 1996. ORIGO (FIN) -------------------------------------------------------------- To the question, about who was involved with this demo, DESTINO answered - "It is almost completely done by BX. We might ask a graphician from some other group to draw something for it, but basically do not expect any full disk demo. It is just a little something BX has put together when not studying". As DESTINO lives far away from BX, he still have not seen anything of the demo. But he has been kept informed through internal communication instead. While it would seem a demo is in the waiting, other projects could also appear in the future. "Some other stuff has also been under construction or at least planning for quite some time now, if someone gets a burst of energy we might even get some of it finished this year" explained DESTINO laughing. ORIGO (FIN) -------------------------------------------------------------- The memberstatus of ORIGO seems to be limited to the group of people still in contact, and that list includes ZARDAX, MIXER, BX, CLF and DESTINO. "Of these, ZARDAX and BX are the only real active members". "MIXER is in Greece for the next 6 months (so I heard anyway), while CLF and DESTINO are just lazy (or maybe busy sounds better)" stated DESTINO to NEWS JOURNAL. SCS + TRC (HOL, GER, POL, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- According to a message posted on THE DIGITAL DUNGEON, the American WHQ of SCS+TRC, THE DUNGEON, should be back up running on the 15th of March. We await the return with great anticipation, as it is welcomed back in the role as one of the most dominant boards in the mid 90's. SCS+TRC are in the midst of preparing the greatest C64 event of Spring 1996, known to the sceners as the X96. This event will take place in Utrecht, Holland, in the beginning of April - the days of the easter holiday. Hundreds of C64 sceners have already announced their desire to meet up. THE PULSE will be present to get all the gossip, but we hope as many as possible will honour the event, and spend the short holiday with friends on the C64 in Holland. SCS + TRC (HOL, GER, POL, etc.) -------------------------------------------------------------- The Dutch phreaker, NIGHTSHADE, has taken a short holiday himself, and visited PALACE members in Finland. We need to get more competitive, and look towards the charts as a source of inspiration. 2. More friendship between sceners is the best solution. 3. OPINION POLL # 2 ------------ What is your opinion of the chapters presented in today's C64 magazines? 1. I dislike most chapters, they are generally boring. 2. I think half is good, half is bad. 3. I like most chapters, they are just fine. 4. I do not have an opinion on this subject. OPINION POLL # 3 ------------ What form of communication method do you use the most in your scene life? 1. I use the Internet. 2. I call the boards. 3. I swap through the mail-system. 4. All of the above. 5. None of the above. 1995 SCENERS CHOICE AWARDS SCENE ILLUSTRATED -------------------------------------------------------------- The year of 1995 became a period, that highlighted great activity, and a lot of memorable productions by the people behind the success of the C64 scene. 1995 also gave evidence to the world, that the C64 scene is still going strong, and will survive for many years to come - thanks to the productive people on the C64. In recognition of these great deeds, we have decided to allow the general sceners to express their appreciation, by handing out awards to the best of 1995. Welcome to the 1995 SCENERS CHOICE AWARDS, in which we will announce the favourite groups and magazines of 1995 - selected by the sceners. We send our humble thanks to the sceners, who took part in these awards, making it possible by voting. The WINNERS of the 1995 SCENERS CHOICE AWARDS -------------------------------------------------------------- BEST GROUP AVANTGARDE BEST CRACKING-GROUP AVANTGARDE BEST DEMO-GROUP REFLEX BEST MAGAZINE VANDALISM NEWS That was the result of the votes we received. We hope the winners are satisfied with the recognition, and will try to live up to it in the year of 1996. This proves that activity will be awarded - in some way! Thanks to the people who voted, without whom this would not have been possible. We will return next year! SCENE MENTALITY SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT -------------------------------------------------------------- This month SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT returns to the regular steaming debates, that will hopefully acculminate into a better scene somehow. We invite you to take part in these debates, because without your opinions and thoughts, the subjects debated will be left unanswered. Please make use of our addresses to air your opinion. The scene of today is run by a different type of people, than in the old scene. Although many of today were part of the old scene, they have changed into a different mentality. They have grown older, and have found more important things to care about in their lives. The scene has been given a different value, and it shows on the activity scale. In the old days there were no limits to what people could and would do, that limit has been showed today - and it is very much the weakness that is dragging the scene down. But fair enough, growing older is a part of life, and sooner or later we all have to move on. The problem however is the few joining the scene, as opposed to the great number of people leaving the scene. We have been fortunate, that a few have returned to the scene, such as THE BYTERAPERS. But without new people in the scene, the responsibility of high activity is left among us sceners of today. Many people have given their version to what could save the scene in the long run. But in my view, the key to success is more competition. Today many do not care about success in the chart-form, and by the looks of the charts, the voters do not care that much either. The charts are outdated, and a new way of doing the charts are desperately needed. But what type of system would that be, and is it possible for us to move away from the historic vote-sheets, that has secured some type of competition through many years? But one thing is for sure, without the charts, there will be no competition. The charts operate as a confidence booster to the productive and active sceners, while it can also work as an inspiration source for those, that wishes to beat the competition. Therefore it is vital and very necessary, that we continue to make charts in the scene - simply because without them, it would have devastating consequences to the activity and the scene. I would hope, that the sceners of today still have some self- respect left. I hope, that everyone wants their work to be appreciated, and that they have an eagerness to beat their foes or competition. Beating the competition should not be taken as a bad word, as it seems it has been understood lately. It is possible to be great friends with competitors, and at the same time thrive for beating them in the charts. The magazine-industry has proved that, at least some of us have kept the friendship separate from the business - so to speak! But I am confident, that we can all agree on one thing. We all want a better scene, and one that can stand the test of time, and survive for many years to come. But our views on the answer to this problem is varied, and should be debated, because then maybe, we can all thrive for one solution, to one problem, with one mean. We would appreciate all forms of contribution to this debate, be it a reaction, comment or possible solution. Please use our addresses printed in the PREFACE chapter, and make your contributions available to us no later than the 28th of March. Thank you! + THE SCENE ILLUSTRATED MONTHLY TIMELINE + -------------------------------------------------------------- When did the following events occur? - ANTICHRIST left the scene, moved to America, and married the female sysop of the MYSTIC CAVERN, SORCERESS. - GENE and HERO of ILLUSION was forced away from the scene, as they were both caught by the police for using AT&T and selling pirate software. - PROPAGANDA was released again by a brand new staff of members. + SATIRICA - THE AUTOPSY OF THE SCENE + -------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome back to the domains of SATIRICA. We take pride in basing out stories on lies and rumours. This means, if there is something contriversial being spread around about you - feel safe, that you will be able to read about it here, along with the rest of the world. Since the last edition, a lot of people have been sending us letters and post-cards, as well as notes through the internet. To those two took the time to write, we would just like to say "The same to YOU!". REGARDING SATIRICA, The stories included in SATIRICA are pure fiction, all of which are based on a satiric state of mind. We do not want to offend anyone, but rather pass on a smile in these trying times. We hope you will enjoy the read. General Editor, DUKE. MR. WAX BUSTED FOR PHREAKING OUT.. -------------------------------------------------------------- The Hungarian police dropped by the home of MR. WAX of CHROMANCE last month, to arrest him for using a fake phone- card - he had used calling the local library. The officer in charge of the arrest, DIM WIT, explained on a press conference, that he was appalled how anyone could use a fake calling-card in this lawabiding day and age. "I will not tolerate this act, he could at least have used a REAL card, instead of this nonsense" stated the confused cop. MR. WAX, who was sentenced to hack his own cards for a two months period, was discontent with his hacker connection. "The jerk gave me fake cards. I suppose he gives his girl-friend fake jewellery as well! Damn him" shouted MR. WAX to an old man crossing the street. But despite being caught, MR. WAX claims he will remain as active as ever. "The day the police starts to interfere with scene relations, I am quitting" stated MR. WAX to the press. THE END OF A GREAT EMPIRE.. -------------------------------------------------------------- BOOZE and INTRUDER, two of the most prominent figures in the EMPIRE history, have decided to put the C64 behind them, and embark upon a journey into the real world. "It has been a rough travel, you cannot get food for calling- cards, and people have no respect for your scene achievements" stated BOOZE on a conference, while sobbing over the many problems. But things have started looking better for BOOZE and INTRUDER, who recently appeared in the French Canadian motion picture "French toast please!" - which is a satire on the EMPIRE days. "It is odd to get paid for making fun of ourselves, but we have been given amazing criticism" claimed INTRUDER, who was overjoined with the success the movie has had in Quebec, Canada. - THE END OF A GREAT EMPIRE.. -------------------------------------------------------------- But according to some nasty rumours, the reason the movie is doing so well, is that RICH/ex.EMPIRE had seen it 18943 times - which made up for the total of people having watched the movie so far. But according to RICH, the movie is deeply inspiring. It also covers the days when EXTREMIST decided to leave the scene, which shocked a lot of people. "If EXTREMIST can have a social life, then damn it, so can I" stated RICH to the SHOWBIZ press! SCENE FRIENDS - EPISODE 2.. -------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to another episode of SCENE FRIENDS, the show that takes place in an apartment located in ZAANDAM, just outside of Amsterdam. Here we join CBA, TIM and NIGHTSHADE of SCS+TRC - who have decided to live together, as scene friends! A huge scream came from the living-room, it was CBA, who had found a note from NIGHTSHADE on the dinnertable, stating "I'm off to Finland. Good luck on the party preparations, suckers!". CBA could not believe it, NIGHTSHADE had left all the work to CBA and TIM, while drawing out signs for the party hall - with one stating "Beer stand A", "Beer stand B" and "Beer stand JACK ALIEN". TIM entered the room, shouting "I just made a poll on the boards. It appears 50% of the C64 sceners will refuse to go - SCENE FRIENDS - EPISODE 2.. -------------------------------------------------------------- unless we bend the rules, and offer weed at the party". CBA nodded knowingly "I know this TIM, and have already made an order at PSYCHOBILLY's hacienda. We should get a truck-load within the hour". CBA was content with his preparation work, and was confident the party was going to be a huge success. But unless NIGHTSHADE came back from his igloo adventure in Finland, there was not going to be much of a party at all. TIM shouted terrified "NIGHTSHADE is gone? Oh my god, that's it. I am leaving this stupid show. I never liked writing it anyway.. Erhm.. DUKE has left the building! X96 - Utrecht, Holland. 6-7th of April. Be there suckers! THE SATIRICA TOP 5 LIST.. -------------------------------------------------------------- Five ways suggesting a scener has been sexually active on the Internet. 5. Lately he sits at the computer naked. 4. In the morning, the computer screen is all fogged up. 3. After signing off, he always has a cigarette. 2. The giant rubber inflatable disk drive. And the unbeatable number one. 1. He's gotten amazingly good at typing with one hand. ALPHA FLIGHT STUDENT GRADUATES.. -------------------------------------------------------------- The infamous student in ALPHA FLIGHT, MAX, was in a state of complete nervousness, as he was to embark upon the challenge of the final test of his exams. "I have never tried anything like this - it kind of reminds me of my kindergarten days" claimed a tense MAX before the test. A large band of people had met up, cheering and waving the German flag in his honour - and MAX proudly shouted in a microphone "Thanks for showing up. Now piss off!". The test was at hand, and MAX was left to prove his knowledge - even though MAX was slightly confused about what subject he was to take the test in. But despite that minor problem, MAX managed to get an A in the test, and he therefore graduated in style. At a press-conference after the graduation-ceremony, the teacher questioned MAX's odd method of doing the test. "Hehe.. I am quite surprised myself. It is amazing what you can do blind- folded, the ALPHA way!" chanted MAX to the shocked crowd! BOD ATTENDS GRAMMY AWARDS.. -------------------------------------------------------------- The member of the British boiled family, BOD of TALENT, appeared on the british Grammy awards ceremony in a special designed Smurf outfit. "It was designed by TALENT TECHNOLOGIES" stated BOD to a disgusted fashion magazine, just moments before he was to give away the award for best hair colour in a music video. BOD also performed a song from his latest CD, which goes by the name of "Maybe it's because I'm a scener". It proved to be a smashing success among the old people, but a member of the press accused BOD of having made a cover off the old song "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner". BOD was calm in his response, stating "Oh yeah, well so is your mother, punk!". TAKE THAT REPLACED BY TAKE THIS.. -------------------------------------------------------------- The world of teenage girls were completely devastated, as the British pop-group, TAKE THAT, announced on a press- conference last month, that they were splitting up. But now the girls has been introduced to a popular replacement, one that could easily achieve twice the success TAKE THAT boasted in their golden days. The band is made out of MOTIV 8 members, and they go by the name of TAKE THIS. The leader of the band, and also the lead-screamer, CROSSFIRE, stated on a press-conference, that the reason they were starting the band, was to get loaded with money, and get a chance to shack underage girls. CROSSFIRE was accused after the conference of lacking originality, as he had apparently ripped off the statements from a former EAST 17 press-statement. TAKE THAT REPLACED BY TAKE THIS.. -------------------------------------------------------------- But CROSSFIRE did not seem to care, he was busy trying to impress an old woman with his fine 19th century saw, which will be his future musical instryment. ICEBALL will play a set of old tin cans, while BIRD and MASON will feature as the bands dancers. The conference ended with CROSSFIRE shouting "TAKE THIS", where after he turned around, and pulled down his pants. The teenage girls who had meet up at the event did not like his move, and started attacking TAKE THIS with clubs and sticks. "Oh my god" shouted CROSSFIRE, while jumping out of the nearby window. After the incident, CROSSFIRE stated to a Danish news-paper. "These teenage girls are the type of people, who give an angry mob a bad name!". THE GOLDEN SCENE AWARDS.. -------------------------------------------------------------- While the world is waiting in great anticipation for the infamous OSCAR awards ceremony, we were given a hint on what movies could become the winners of the most prestigious award in film making today. It was time for the GOLDEN SCENE AWARDS, a ceremony that applauds movies of high quality around the world. We were proud to cover this event, and here we bring you the nominated movies in the category of "Movies that suck less than the rest". JUMANJI starring JAZZCAT/ONSLAUGHT "Hey, what a nice board. Let us play this game. Oh my, what is this? Argh, Dingo's are running through the library walls. I better get the heck outta here. Oh my god, save me. I hate these dingo's!". THE GOLDEN SCENE AWARDS.. -------------------------------------------------------------- GOLDEN EYE starring BOD/TALENT "Hello there darling. My name is BOD, JAMES BOD. I am soft and cuddly, but do not get rude with me, because I have a licence to slap!". WAITING TO EXHALE starring PSYCHOBILLY "Exhale? No man, you gotta inhale these joints, otherwise they will have no effects. Take all the smoke you get into your lounges, and then wait to exhale!". BABE starring THE MISTRESS "I have had enough writing cheap predictable erotic stories in THE TRIBUNE. Now I am moving to England, to marry a fine Aristocrat, who will appreciate what is inside me, rather than what is outside!". THE GOLDEN SCENE AWARDS.. -------------------------------------------------------------- CLUELESS starring SHOUT STAFF "We have no clue why we became such a huge success from just one issue. But now we are going back to release one more, and then enjoy the admiration for the rest of an inactive year". Drumrole please. And the wiener is. Oh my god, it is "None of the before mentioned movies, because they are all crap". Well there you go. Another fine year at the GOLDEN SCENE awards. We will see you next year, with hopefully a new group of movies worth nominating for crap!
meet the press
+ MEET THE PRESS - A WORLD OF MAGAZINES + -------------------------------------------------------------- The media in the scene has profound power to be a positive influence. This is where we come in, welcome to another edition of MEET THE PRESS. The section dedicated to take on the media - the organisers in the C64-scene. MEET THE PRESS also operates as the official reaction section of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. We invite you to send us your thoughts and views, be they positive or negative, about this magazine. We will print your letters in the next edition, if they reach us before the 28th of March. This edition we will concentrate on the future of the C64 media, as we posse the question - is it time for a change? This issue will be debated in The Media Today. We also bring you updated news feedings from the world of magazines, and those behind them. General editor, DUKE, bids you welcome! THE MEDIA TODAY A TIME FOR A CHANGE -------------------------------------------------------------- The magazine industry has been a highlited part of the scene for many years now, and it has grown along with the many changes in the scene. But although the magazines are quick to find new ways of doing editorial jobs better, it would seem, that the general chapters used in all magazines, are in the need of a badly needed face-lift. Throughout the years, the charts, the advertisements, the news reports among other famous magazine chapters, have never been changed dramatically. They have been modified slightly over the years, and the coverage has improved immensely. But there has never been made a notable change, one it would seem is long over-due. The same problem appears with the outfits. Most magazines look alike, and seem to have solved the secret of doing a good and reader-friendly outfit. A logo and a text-area, nothing else is needed. But there must be a different way of doing it, and a better way of course. There is no point in making a change, just for the sake of being different. But a change should be made, in order to find improvements. It could be an impossible task though, as it is another of these everlasting questions. What can we do to make a magazine unique, and yet better than the rest? SHOCK made such an improvement, although it was a simple one, it was applauded by everyone, and followed up to this date. Perhaps it takes a good 3-5 years between every great evolution in the scene, but that would also prove to be a good statistics, considering the small size of this scene. But nevertheless, we should always thrive for improvements, otherwise we would fall asleep, and people would get bored with the magazine. Let us take a closer look, at some of the chapters that highlights a magazine of today. THE NEWS CHAPTER The random news coverage, which was popular and practised in the past, have developed into an alphabetised news editing. This method has been practised for years already, but is still only used by few magazines today. It is mostly the top magazines, which are released on a regular date, that makes use of this method. But despite the criticism, that it is somewhat of a boring method, which is lacking the news scoop option, it has still proved to be the most reader-friendly way of editing. THE CHARTS CHAPTER Charts have always been a regular inventory in a decent magazine, and it is a common edition to all magazines today. It is however one of the chapters, that has gone through the least improvements over the years. The charts are the same world-wide, with a few exceptions - magazines that have made use of games and demos to make alternative charts. The biggest problem however, is that charts are often left without any comments, and have therefore developed into more of a boring statistics, rather than a highlighted point-of-view result. THE ADVERTISEMENTS CHAPTER This is perhaps the least modifiable chapter in a magazine, and therefore it has also been left without any improvements throughout its history. But it would seem this chapter could need important swapping and spreading details, hints on how to cheat your stamps better, etc.. All part of giving the swappers and traders around better conditions for doing their spreading of our wares. That concludes a short run-down of a few of the charts common to all magazines. We would like to hear your opinion, on how it would be possible to improve these chapters, and others as well. It is time for such an improvement, and we hope that people will start working on ways, to make reading a magazine more entertaining, but at the same time informative and reasonable. - SHOUT! ANNOUNCES COMEBACK -------------------------------------------------------------- The wildly popular merger of 1995 between REFORMATION and INGENIOUS BRAINS, which resulted into SHOUT is to return to an active role in 1996. As most people probably remember, SHOUT only managed to release one issue, and since then has been officially dead. But the former General editor of SHOUT, WARP, plans to bring back SHOUT under the former INGENIOUS BRAINS label, EQUINOXE. One of the leaders of the reformed group, MACX, explained to MEET THE PRESS, that SHOUT is scheduled for release in May 1996. "It will then be out on a regular BI- or every third month basis" stated MACX. But even though EQUINOXE was brought back as label for the popular magazine, it will probably only feature in the comeback edition. "We are actually searching for a new group to release it with" stated MACX, who also underlined the fact, that FAIRLIGHT will not be involved. IMMORTAL FLASH PREDICTS RETURN -------------------------------------------------------------- The producers of IMMORTAL FLASH, ATLANTIS, has not given up on bringing their once proud magazine back to life. But although IMMORTAL FLASH has suffered from what must be described as a known mortal problem, laziness, they are optimistic about the future. ROBOCOP of ATLANTIS told MEET THE PRESS, that building up a new staff and outfit is an immense job, and that AVALANCHE/ATLANTIS was in the midst of coding the new outfit for the magazine. "No date is set like always, but it will be this year I hope" stated ROBOCOP to MEET THE PRESS. VANDALISM NEWS TAKES AWARD -------------------------------------------------------------- The 1995 SCENER'S CHOICE AWARDS, published in SCENE ILLUSTRATED this issue, became a huge success for the Tasmanian-based magazine, VANDALISM NEWS. The most active magazine of 1995, which was also considered the favourite, managed to beat a band of strong competitors, all worthy of compliments for their contributions throughout the year of 1995. PROPAGANDA proved to be a positive surprise, finding itself on the second place. Another Tasmanian-based production, DOMINATION, secured its position in the scene, by winning a 3rd place position. The 4th position went to the German-based production, RELAX MAGAZINE, which also proved to be one of the greatly active magazines of 1995. VANDALISM NEWS TAKES AWARD -------------------------------------------------------------- SKYHIGH however, did not meet the same enthusiasm from the voters, as it normally does in the charts. It was placed on a disappointing 5th place. The voters proved to vary greatly in opinion. Most active magazines in the scene received a nomination, but it seemed as if everyone agreed on one magazine - VANDALISM NEWS was the best magazine in 1995! THE PULSE MAGAZINE was disqualified as a possible candidate, as it was the holder of the awards, and because of the fact, that it did not make its comeback before June 1995. RELAX SNATCHES PRESTIGIOUS SITE -------------------------------------------------------------- The successful German-based production, RELAX MAGAZINE, managed to sign a fantastic new and exclusive deal with the most popular site on the Internet, THE DIGITAL DUNGEON. According to General editor of RELAX, RRR, THE DIGITAL DUNGEON is now the official Internet transfer site for RELAX. It therefore becomes the 3rd magazine to secure a site on the Internet, following the INTERPARK, which is currently shared between PROPAGANDA and THE PULSE MAGAZINE. RELAX also announced the signing of a brand new editor. STYX of ALPHA FLIGHT will join the staff as co-editor of RELAX starting with the April edition. It will be the first major magazine, that STYX will work for. He has however done some editorial work for RELAX in the past, but now he will work full-time as an official staff-member. THE PULSE MAGAZINE BACK ON THE BOARDS -------------------------------------------------------------- It has been a while since THE PULSE MAGAZINE, was considered active on the board-market. But after a long break of having had no board support, THE PULSE MAGAZINE managed to sign on the Danish-based board, MOUNT OLYMPUS. This board is currently the official EHQ for cracking-group MOTIV 8, but as THE PULSE MAGAZINE was a welcome name on the board, MOUNT OLYMPUS decided to end the relationship with DOMINATION. THE PULSE MAGAZINE is currently in negotiations, led by MR.WAX, with an American board. This will hopefully lead to a successful signing, that will bring back THE PULSE MAGAZINE an American home, that is vital for future material collecting. THE MISTRESS QUITS THE SCENE -------------------------------------------------------------- The infamous female editor of the Holland-based magazine, THE TRIBUNE, has decided to leave the staff, and quit the scene all-together. Apparently she has married an Englishman, who also should have a link to the Commodore 64 scene. It is however unknown who this person is, but we will keep you posted. But THE TRIBUNE has already solved the obvious editorial problem, that followed her farewell. The brand new edition to the staff, CRUSHER, will take over the role of THE MISTRESS. Meanwhile WILD COYOTE has become the CO-leader of ANGRY and THE TRIBUNE, which should give it a boost forward. It is still unknown though, whether CRUSHER will be editing the erotic stories in THE TRIBUNE, that THE MISTRESS became known for. We predict however, that her "special" segment will disappear from the program though. AMERICANS DISSATISFIED WITH PAL MAGAZINES -------------------------------------------------------------- The American and Canadian sceners on the overseas and European boards, have expressed their discontent with the PAL produced magazines. Apparently they are unhappy with the actual coverage of the overseas scene, or maybe rather the lack of it. A certain American stated, all of the news printed was hilarious, and most of it incorrect. But at the same time, he admitted American produced magazines have had problems with covering the PAL part of the scene - so maybe it was an impossible task to combine the two media-wise. "It would seem DRIVEN is the only magazine able to cover the American scene" stated another American scener on a board. DRIVEN has also become extremely popular lately, earning votes from PAL sceners in the PAL magazines. AMERICANS DISSATISFIED WITH PAL MAGAZINES -------------------------------------------------------------- Beginning this month, THE PULSE MAGAZINE will introduce an improved coverage of the American scene. General editor, DUKE, stated of MEET THE PRESS - "We notice the problem, and would therefore like to help solve it. Maybe it would be solved if the American and Canadian scene members assisted in the news gathering". -------------------------------------------------------------- This concludes another edition of MEET THE PRESS. We hope you have enjoyed the read, and will move on to read the rest of what THE PULSE MAGAZINE has to offer. We would like for all magazines to send us news about their staff - and also articles related to the media on the C64 are most welcome. We will see you next month, take care!
world of demos
WORLD OF DEMOS March -------------------------------------------------------------- After last issue's break we are back on track to keep you updated with the latest information about recent demos. On the march program are: * MATHEMATICA/REFLEX * KJU'/REFLEX * NAPALM/REFLEX * RETROACTIVE/ANTIC * DAWNFALL/OXYRON * OBSCENE CODE/NO NAME As MR.SEX decided to leave the WOD-staff, I have to fill in the gap a second time, however - we will have a replacement by next month. Also on next month's program is the complete DEMOCHART for 1995 with the missing demos from SIESTA and SMASH DESIGNS being reviewed... MATHEMATICA by REFLEX ------------------ Syndrom about the coding, The demo starts with a turn-disk message, however, the checker doesn't work correctly, as the floppy starts running too early - the kickload doesn't work too well...whatever. Well, the real intro is well done and contains some IFLI-logos with some of the members' handles scrolling x/y on the screen. The next part are some circles, which move in all 3 directions, even filled later on! After that we face another eor-chessboard, but this time with color-splitting! If you watch this part for real you'll notice that there are more than 2 hires-colors in each 8*8 square. Next to come is a dithered 4*4-rotator, followed by a julia- morph which looks nothing but ugly. But that dithered 4*4- mode looks very promising compared to the normal 4*4-fli- mode, in which the next effect, an x-y-wave-zoomer, gets displayed. Next to come is a doom-imitation in 4*4, which is quite fast and contains some nice textures on the walls. However, combined with that dithered mode it would look even better. After some loading we face a vector-cube with some fractals as texture, followed by a torus with gourand- shading, all in 4*4-dithered mode. Rushing through to the next effect, which is a 4*4-fli-view from inside a torus, which changes into a tunnel later on, we later see a charplasma, which doesn't look very special. The next part is again a doom-part, this time with some fake- greetings displayed over it, well - get real and see how great they are! Anyway, this demo contains some high-level-code, though it lacks some design. 90 % for the coding... EARTHQUAKE about the graphic, The intro is something what I call impressive! PRIVATE SOLDIER did some very cool graffity-styled logos featuring the handles from all the guys behind this production. I especially like the ones for Felidae and PVCF although the character of PVCF's logo was ripped from a graffity in Dresden. The creations for Quiss and PVT himself are nice too, but Zorc's and Guru's are of slightly lower quality. This intro, both code and graphics show what is possible on our little machine. Nice work guys! The Mathematica title appears in simple hires. If I didn't know I would not have expected Felidae to be responsible for this, as there is nothing of his personal style in it. It is more like a company's logo with clear straigth lines. The next graphic in this production is also the last one. I was kind of disappointed, as I expected to see PVT's cool competition picture in the show, but back to the Reflex-logo in the Julia-part. This creation, also done by PVT, is of qite low quality compared to the intro gfx. It is graffity- styled too, but the outlines are not that good. Some more colors and some antialiasing would have helped but in this way it is nothing but a bomb graffity. Well, this demo is close to perfect. I think it's not possible to code better effects on the C64, but I like to be proven wrong. I just missed a cool picture. Rating for the graphics: 85 % SYNDROM about the music, The first thing I noticed, that the SID-Version-checker by KB did not work every time I watched this demo. Anyway, I wonder if there are different tunes for both SID-versions, as I could not hear any difference when testing the demo on both old and new SIDs. But in my opinion it is not even necessary to do different versions, as long as you avoid filterclicks and using incompatible filtervalues on the new SID. Anyway, back to the demotunes. There are 3 musics, all composed by PVCF in his usual techno-style. The first one starts with some stompy bassline, but when the effect-drums come in, it gives some disgusting clicks on my old SID, although I choosed OLD SID in the requester. Well, when the music goes on, some fast accords come in, followed by some quite cool ringmodulated sounds and after that the music is already fading away... The next one contains some cool basedrum, which gives a spheric atmosphere if you listen to it on some LOUDspeakers. This tune contains some oriental themes in the melody, which reminded me a bit of DANSA MED ACHMED :) In the first doompart some heavy $15-bells start to ring quite unmotivated and some annoying volume changes made me turn the volume down a bit. Later PVCF uses transpose quite often, but sometimes it sounds quite disharmonic, if he'd done that more careful the tune would have got a higher rating. In the second DOOM-part a new tunes starts playing (without fading) and the drums contain the usual filterbug, so you better don't watch this demo on an old c64! Anyway, I think this tune is wasted as it did not even start for real when the demo is already over and doing a reset without any fading, but with ramcopied+modified Kernal... nice joke... Sumarizing I have to say, that PVCF has got some talent doing techno music - if he just would take more time on his instruments!! Rating for the music: 61 % KJU' by REFLEX ----------- SYNDROM about the coding, Well, all the code was done by ZORC, and he really put some effort in designing the demo! The first real effect is an equalizer-routine made with rasterbars. I know that this routine is quite old, but it still looks nice. The next effect are some moving lines, but they are not just moving, but also being lightsourced and centered by the position of a sun, which rotates around them. Quite an original effect! After some text and gfx-plotting we see a part by Felidae, which is another version of his infamous landscapes, but this time in 8*8 resolution, which doesn't look too good on a TV. The next effect is really stunning - Zorc called it MOLECULAR MOVEMENT, but infact it is some sort of shadebob-routine, which is used in a quite unusual way... The next effect is a graphic-plotter in hires, which is nothing special I'd say. But it looks stylish anyway. Then we see one of his old routines again, but this time improved, the fireworks from CAFE ODD infact. Later the end-scroll arrives, which is nothing special, too, just a moving scroll with some rasters behind. Anyway, ZORC shows that he know how to code and how to design a demo. This leaves much to be hoped for in the future... Ratings : 75 % EARTHQUAKE about the graphics, The beginning of this production is featuring a cool style. The synchronisation between graphic and music is very good. Unfortunately I have no idea what the title-image shows, but I like it and it just fits to the extraordinary name of the demo. The sun in the part with those lightsourced lines looks cute, and the charset in the endscroll is welldesigned, too. Ratings for the graphics: 65 % SYNDROM about the music, Another demo by REFLEX, and another soundtrack by PVCF. There are two tunes, the first one starts with some flute- lines reminding me on some chinese culture. The whole tune keeps that style and almost uses no drums. Too bad that it gets faded away that early. The next tune is a real hit! It's some kind of trance-music, with some steady $21-baseline, and some nice room-backgrounds. The high-hats are almost perfect and give the whole tune a cool undergroundish atmo- sphere. This only proves my opinion, that if PVCF takes more time on his instruments, he can do alot better! Ratings for the music: 85 % NAPALM by REFLEX ------------- SYNDROM about the coding, Well, originally this demo was called XFR by Napalm, but we all know that it was done by REFLEX just to enter it at the competition at TP5. This demo contains the "trash"parts by GURU/REFLEX. The intro starts with some nice graphic- animations, then after some logo-fading we face a scroller containg some weird charset, which I could not get a message out of until today - though I have to confess that I didn't check the memory yet. The next effect is some light-source routine displayed on a fixed torus-object. Looks quite nice, but would look better, if that object would be moving. The next thing is the plasma-routine, which was also part of MATHEMATICA, and after it we already see the end-part, which is only an oldstyled star-scroll and an ugly-looking earth turning around 3 axes. Rating for the code: 60 % EARTHQUAKE about the graphic: Also this intro was done well and it contains some symbols flying and zooming over your screen. These pieces probably did not take too long to paint, if they were painted at all. Nevertheless I like this animation and I remember being a bit impressed at the Party. Unfortunately this stays the only graphical experience of the demo, so far too less graphics in here... Rating: 20 % SYNDROM about the music, Hey, this is another demo containing ripped tunes only, so you know I'm not gonna review the soundtrack, just the usual points for choosing... Ratings for the music: 11 % RETROACTIVE by ANTIC ---------------- SYNDROM about the coding, Well, this demo is quite unusual, and not as good as I would have expected it from ANTIC. Anyway, the intro consists of a simulation of netscape-c64, so nothing very hard to code. The next part is some ugly looking animation of a dancer (?) in 4*2 resolution. The first real part is the DOOM-part, which is fully joy-controlled. The size of the screen is quite low, but it looks reasonable, and a plus is the lightsource-routine. Pressing space gives us the next part, which is another PC- joke, this time being a windows-emulation. This one contains another nice effect, a kind of gfx-twister, similar to the one in an old TOPAZ demo, only that the resolution is more blocky to get more colors. Still it looks quite nice. The next part is the end part and contains the credits and some gfx-flashing... As I said before, I'd expected ANTIC to do better, nevertheless... 45 % for the coding... EARTHQUAKE about the graphics, Again not much to review... After Lunacy 7 (you probably remember the loading attempts on MS-DOS, Amiga and finally C-64) Antic starts again with doing some satirica on C-64. The ideas are good and everybody I know started to smile atleast sometimes, but the video animation of the intro is worth a special remark. At this time my smile faded away. I've never seen such a crappy bunch of pixels excluding a bug. This doesn't look cool in any way. Only the charset used there is okay. I don't know, what the guys of Antic thought when they did a video animation on C-64 this way, but I have seen some cool examples in Agony's "LOVE", which shows what is possible... Most of the graphics included in the outro were used before in other productions, but anyway this is the graphicial highlight of this Antic-demo. Ofcourse these images are of good quality, but I missed Creepers competition picture in this demo... Well, sumarising I have to say, that this production is, seen from the graphicial angle, rather poor. Rating for the graphics: 35 % SYNDROM about the music, Well, the first thing I noticed is that the intro does not contain ANY sound ! So the first music is used in the video part. It was done by ZYRON, like all other tunes too, and is some kind of techno tune. Zyron's music is not everybody's taste, but he always puts a lot of originality into his tunes. Too bad that this part is already over after some seconds, so the watcher can't listen to the tune for real. The next music is used in the DOOM part, and starts with some filtered sounds. The whole tune is providing a very special atmosphere which fits very good to this part, though the musical level of this tune is not very high. The music in the windows-part is again a moody tune making use of filters a lot. But I'd like to mention that there are NO clicks or other bugs in ZYRON's tunes - Well done! The music in the end-part is made in the style of the middle- ages, and sounds quite impressive... Ratings for the music: 75 % DAWNFALL by OXYRON --------------- SYNDROM about the coding, This one-file demo was entirely coded by GRAHAM, and it shows that he is one of the best coders around. After some intro-texts we see the first effect, a moving landscape-picture, which zooms with adjusting the resolution. The next effect is a chessboard turning around in x&y-direction and zooming, and all in HIRES-resolution. The next effect is some kind of stretcher-routine, only this time displaying some logos turning around into z-direction. Actually I remember having seen this effect in an unreleased part by TTS at Datalive'93. Well, the next parts are again the chessboard-routine, but this time using some bars as object. Later we see a nice plasma, another bar-rot-zoomer and the stretch-routine again. The end part contains some fractal- plottings and the usual upscroll. Well, this demo was real cool, and I may tell you, that GRAHAM even managed to install three (atleast I found only 3) hidden parts into this file. Rating for the coding: 97 % EARTHQUAKE about the graphics, This production contains only 2 Oxyron logos, both in average quality, which get shown after the intro with some graphical elements (not worth a review concerning art). More graphic wouldn't have been possible in just one file, though. The first composition shows an Oxyron logo standing on some hills and water infront of it. Ofcourse the landsacpe gets a bit mirrored in the liquid element. The second logo is a creation made by BIZ KID. The outlines are quite familiar with a normal charset with a decent 3D-effect. Behind this plain cyan logo the background was pixelised with some more colors. In general these two logos don't look bad, but on the other hand they are not very original. Rating for the graphics: 50 % SYNDROM about the music, This demo features an exclusive music done by JEFF. It is again techno-styled, but this time it sounds like quality. The tune is using some inspiration from METAL's PC-music and the 2nd half of the tune (in the end-part) was inspired from PRODIGY. Well, the instruments are excellent, so is the volume-balance between them. All in all a cool techno-music, though I missed some more originality - I mean something you still remember when you finished watching this demo. Rating for the music: 85 % OBSCENE CODE by NO NAME ------------------ SYNDROM about the coding, Here we have the "real" party-demo from NO NAME (Vodoo People was just some digis and won't be reviewed), though it is rather small. But I was quite surprised about the quality of the parts. Well, there's not much to the intro, just the usual stuff like logo- and textfaders. The first real effect are a dot-tunnel, which looks quite good. The next thing is some realtime morphing letters, which looks nice, too. After some loading we see another 4*4-part, this time a rot- zooming fractal, which gets wrapped into z-direction later on (They call it a Tilter). The next part is the end-part, but it is quite an unusual endpart. It's another DOOM-clone, but sofar it's one of the best I've seen. The resolution is 4*4 again, but the rooms are very detailed and you even can walk through doors. Maybe the textures aren't too original, but it looks good anyway. I'm just waiting for the first DOOM in normal multicolor-resolution!! Ratings for the code: 75 % EARTHQUAKE about the graphics, The logo used in the intro was done in a style seen a hundred times before. That means the outlines are block-orientated and the fillings look copied - in my opinion very boring. Some flags of different countries surround this non-creative appearance. After the intro screen faded away, the name of the demo gets displayed in the same quality as before. Somehow it looks even worse. Well, it's a pity the graphicians don't stand on the same level as the coders of this demo, but unfortunately it's TRUE. Some parts later these graphicians show their ability in doing logos again. The border of this DOOM part is nothing special, but the logos are again in the mass-production-style. Though their fillings haven't been copied, they aren't original and agains it's the same thing with their outlines. Although I find the textures in Reflex' DOOM parts too colorful the textures used in No Name's version could look better. I also hoped for some artwork in this production, atleast for one. Sumarising it up - I was disappointed by the graphics but impressed by the code- effects. Ratings for the graphics: 35 % SYNDROM about the music, Well, the demo contains music by RAP and ZYRON and I couldn't find a hint that they were exclusive, especially as ZYRON's tune is from '94. So you know I won't gonna review them. But I find especially the last tune very stylish and chosen very well, especially for the doom-part. Ratings for the music: 15 % That's all for this month - we will not do a chart this time, just to keep you interested for next month, when we will present the big BEST DEMO of 1995 - chart. Until then... /WOD-staff
profile
PROFILE by MR.WAX/CHROMANCE Welcome to the PROFILE,humble reader! Today we can present you a very interesting interview with a not-so-wellknown German phreaker. Some veterans (like MYSELF) may know him by name but I got the hunch that 90 percent of today's sceners doesn't know much or simply anything about him. I know him since ages and we can call each other real good friends so I really hope you ALL will know him better now. Please welcome, JINX of HITMEN from Cologne/Germany. P: = MR.WAX/THE PULSE MAGAZINE J: = JINX/HITMEN On with the show... P:Yo Markus! Since we don't want you to stay wrapped in mystery please introduce yourself to the readers. J: Well, like you already said my name is Markus and I'm aged 22 (will turn 23 this April), I am 185 cm tall, have long dark blond hairs and brown eyes... Hey, does this answer fits to the common ones? Guess so... :) P:Now that we know a bit about you, would you tell us how did it all began? Which groups you were a member of, make a roundup of your career... J: Hm... how did all began? Lemme remember, back in 1985 a friend of mine got a VC20 and I loved to play games on that machine.I just had to get such machine aswell but my parents always refused... Then at X-MAS '87 I got my first C128D and it took a while untill I got fed up of just playing games. I started learning a bit Basic and using Demo-/Intromakers as I really was impressed of those groups who released games and demos! Later on when I got more interest in machine language I built up my first group with a real good friend of mine (old dudes might remember GOTCHA,eh?)... However, all worked fine until Dario (GTA) left to join ARRAY. So I dropped MADNESS and joined EASY, as this wasn't the best decision I left again after a couple of weeks. In '89 or '90 I joined an Austrian group called CHAOS where I had my most active time and made a lot of friends... After 1 1/2 year things started to get worse and I got an offer to join CRAZY, so I did. A half year later CRAZY died and I decided to quit 64... Guess what, I couldn't stand it and joined CHROMANCE where I stayed nearly 4 years being not that active, mostly just calling out and doing some Intros... Finally in Summer '95 I decided to team up with some friends who wanted to rebuild HITMEN, the place where I will stay for the remaining rest... That's about it! P:What is your job in HITMEN today and why did you leave CHROMANCE after being in the group for years? J: My job in HITMEN? Well, I have no certain job. I just do what has to be done, like coding, cracking, calling out, H/P... but as you know, Balazs, I am a quite lazy butt... :)) (true.ED) You really wanna know why I left <C>? Hm... Somehow I got fed up of the 64 scene, I wasn't really a part of it anymore. Most of my old friends left ages ago and so I decided to do something which would make more fun like coding a REAL game, not those low budget shit which get released these days... Anyway, by that time I decided to stay in <C> as an inactive member doing something from time to time and releasing it under the <C> label... I already started coding things I would need for my game and I always wanted to code anyway like an IRQ-Loader and Cruncher... However, in May 1995 I got a call from Peacemaker, who has already been a good friend of mine, and he told me about their idea to rebuild HITMEN... Somehow he convinced me to join aswell. It really makes more fun if you're able to meet some group mates in just 1/2 hour... Budapest is just too far away, that's why I have been at your place only once, so far, Balazs... :) P:I know you do some H/P stuff, and I heard it on the grapevine that you can BLUE BOX from Germany and that ain't something. Don't you find it too risky, especially living in good old Germany?!? J: Blue Boxing? I know alot of guys used to blue box a couple of years and so did I... but even if I would be able to blue box these days I guess I wouldn't tell in public, I just remember those days when every lamer had been able to bb... All I can say is, there are still certain ways to call out, it's a hell of work to find some but everybody could make it... Of course, there's a risk by phreaking of getting busted, I just got told that someone got cought for (ab)using a VMB but I think TELEKOM has no REAL interest into busting some little phreakers as long as they're earning with it... just imagine what TELEKOM earns on these scanning dudes! By the way, phreaker's life had been easier once here in Germany... P:You know that I got busted for (ab)using a fake phone-card. Have you ever had some problems with the police or telecom? J: Haha... that story is really weird! What are they doing in Hungary, having a policeman beside every pay-phone? haha... Nah, so far I had not any problem with police neither Telekom I just got once a call from AT&T asking for some names of people who called me... I told them some tales, nothing more. P:What are you doing in your sparetime? Are you still studying or working? And beside the C64,are you active on other systems? J: I am still studying at a private school it's kinda "Fachhoch- schule" topic is technical informatic or however it's called... I don't have much spare time left but usually I meet friends or do some sport... I really like to wind-surf, if I have the time to go to the Netherlands... Here in Cologne you have no chance for it... I can't say that I am any kinda active on other systems, not scene wise, I just had to learn C, C++ and 80x86 machine language for school but somehow I don't like PCs much... I would be interested in starting coding on the latest SONY Playstation but it's hard to get info about it... P:Lots of magazines are talking/reporting about the INTERNET. Do you see the net as a major change for the C64 scene or just a small time system? Do you think it would be possible to accept first releases on the NET or should we still be sticking to the US boards? J: INTERNET is the future definitly! I for myself started using INET just a couple of months ago, it makes more fun instead of calling some nearly dead boards... Only a few are left which are worth being called daily... By the way, fact is that you can keep in touch with people all over the world via INET quite cheap on a legal way (if you prefer it! :) ), so even old 64 dudes who used to call US boards could be able to start again! There's a company here in Germany who offers an I-NET account for free, all you have to pay are local rates... And I got told about another one where you pay around 30-50 bucks for an account and they offer a toll-free number but I just got told Some mags should think of making an INTERNET chapter with charts and stuff... Maybe that brings back some people?! P:How do you see the scene today, compared to the "golden days"? What would you change if you could? J: The scene today compared with the "golden days"... Well, first of all, my "golden days" had been in 1988-1992 or something like this... this time reminds me of real competition, real good groups and all what it was about was friendship... The atmosphere on boards had been far better... Have a look on today's so called ELITE and compare it with the one from the past and you know what I am talking about... but hey, time is going on and you have to look forward and make the best out of it! If I could change something on 64 scene... hm, better games and real copyprotections would make me doing more on 64... :) P:Do you read magazines today and if so how do you like them? Any favourite? (Do NOT kiss ASS for us! :)) J: To be honest, I don't read every mag neither every chapter. I just pick the ones which might be of any interest... Favours... Hm... MAMBA!!! hehehe... Today's favorit is definitly PROPAGANDA, I just loved the last issue. Could be released more regulary but I can imagine what kinda hell of work it is... Other mags I read are DRIVEN (real good US one, keep doing it dudes!), THE PULSE (flowers... :)) and RELAX... haven't read any other for ages.... P:Do you keep an eye or two on the LEGAL scene as well? What do you say about today's demos? J: I really wanted to do more for legal scene but I don't have enough time left... I think I should reduce the sencless crap like calling out and doing any cracks(?) of low budget games which nobody plays anyway and move my ass to code something of quality... I really like today's demos, I haven't been up to date for almost 2 years and I really was surprised when I saw some decent demos... Nice work! P:Let's play the old "BRAINSTORM". Tell us what comes in your mind first when you hear these words: C64: ................ Still my favorite one BOARDS: ............. Glory days are gone INTERNET:............ The place to get lost... but the future! MUSIC:............... Hip Hop/Soul/Funk (Vibrants/MoN/M.Gray) PARTY:............... Beer BEER:................ Party ONSLAUGHT:........... Kangaroo :) U.S.A.:.............. Place to visit once! P:Slowly but surely we're running out of time so just take your chance and say YO! to your best friends. J: First of all I have to say HY to my real old friends, even if they don't read this anymore... CHUM, MIKE D., NEGATIV, CONNOR, GOTCHA, ALIEN (rest in peace)... these are the ones who left the 64 ages ago... Anyway, greets are going aswell to my dear friends Jazzy D., Mr Wax, Alex, Peacemaker, Rich, Grego, Larry (Lucifer), Susieuzi, Joe, Curlin, Jihad, Tyron, Joyride and all I might forgot... P:Well done,Markus! Thanks a lot for sharing your intimate thoughts with us and we all can just wish all the best for the future and stay C64 buddy!
