interview...

hi, it's MEGAZZAP/PARALAX-TSR on the
keys typing an interview report.

i have decided to interview my good
friend GIORGIO ARMANI who i have known
well before our scene life.

there are the usual questions and some
unusual answers we can expect from this
interview. so read on and find out.

TELL OUR READERS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU?

my real name is DANIEL POON. i am 20
years old. i am studying accounting at
the university of technology sydney.
i will be graduating at the end of 1993
to become one of the elite of my
profession (hehehe).

HOW DID THE NAME GIORGIO ARMANI COME
ABOUT?

yeah that's a good question. my first
handle was called CYBERNET which lasted
2 months before i switched to my current
handle as GIORGIO ARMANI. the name is
the name of a famous and expensive
fashion label. giorgio armani is a
living legend - a designer which is so
successful at designing fashion for
male and female. a glasses frame of his
label can set you back $300.

obviously i was inspired by his success
and the great things he did. i like to
think that a coder is like a fashion
designer. i am inspired by their
creativity, that energy of expression!
i like to think that coders do similar
things. in fact, it's true. good
coders can turn pieces of boring gfx or
tunes into a great demo, right?

SO DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE ACHIEVED THAT?

well yes and no. i think i still need
more time with the machine to discover
the best. yet i am feeling that i am
getting closer all the time. so that's
a great feeling when you are doing
something new each time. it's really
challenging you know.

i believe you can always do better than
the last time. so it's a zero-end game.
it's like a recurring process. i think
i'll only stop when i quit the machine.

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED TO LEAVE THE
C64 SINCE IT MAY BE GETTING OBSOLETE?

well that's a bit too early to tell
yet. having been with the scene for
almost one year, i don't think the c64
will ever die. the only thing that will
happen is people's mind think that they
like to play with a newer machine becoz
of new capabilities. but as many sceners
would agree that they find more
challenge from programming a less
capable machine to beat the odds
against more powerful machines. and
that's what's great about the c64
scene compare to any other machine.

the only reason i would leave the scene
is if my work would start to reduce my
time available. but i think can always
find time. for example, i have been
studying for exam so i haven't send to
my contacts for a while. but i have
always had that thought on the back of
my head. so as soon as that's over, i
'll go right back into it. for the
foreseeable future, no!!!!!!
WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE ABOUT THE SCENE?

i felt that slagging against sceners
is lame. i am in for friendship, not
fights. so if you ask me, i'll leave if
i feel that the scene has too many of
this. it'll not be worthwhile at all.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST THEN?

friendship!!! and having fun doing what
you do. enjoying others company in
this great scene. seeing the impossible
being done to the c64 is great feeling.
of course contributing to the scene too.
WHAT DO YOU SEE IN TSR'S FUTURE?

i think we have some great talent in
many areas. for example UPTONOGOOD is
our leader doing fine with leading and
swapping. comparatively, i would call
him a mega-swapper as in euro. MEGAZZAP
is a very talent artist, one of the few
who mastered the trade i think. NEPTUNE
is our new found talent which i regard
as one of the best in oz. we have TSR
EUROPE doing very well on their own.
and how can we forget all the other guys
who consistently do very well at pushing
this group. just look at the member
status, all of them are special people
who can do amazing things of their
specialisation.

the future of TSR will go a longway!

YOU SAID EARLIER THAT YOU STUDY
ACCOUNTING, WHY NOT COMPUTING?

well, at first i thought i was gonna
do that. but i like to keep computing
as a hobby and not real work. i have
talk to people who had computing as a
hobby and later had it as a job. they
get their normal work stress at work
and slowly distance themselve from
the hobby and lost it totally. i never
want to do that so i chose accounting
as my job and computing as my prime
hobby.

DO YOU HAVE OTHER HOBBIES?

yes. i like listening to pop music
(top 20). my favourite groups are DIRE
STRAITS, ENIGMA, M.JACKSON, GUNS N ROSES
AND ERIC CLAPTON. i like the above
artists probably because my interest
playing electric guitar too. my other
hobbies are squash, tennis and stamp
collecting. also, since i have an
amiga now, i regard that as another
special hobby, very different to the c64
cos the things you do with it are much
different. for example, i use it for
midi purpose hooking up with my sisters
synthesizer to play 32 voices. that
beats the hell out of amiga's 4 voice
or the c64's 3 voice capability!

ANYTHING ELSE YOU LIKE TO SAY TO THE
SCENE?

yeah i think it's doing great as ever.
i hope the oz scene can go further and
can narrow the gap with the euros.
i would like to see more support from
the euros to upgrade our skills if you
like. at the moment, i'm already seeing
our guys doing better than ever so that'
s great.

i suppose all i really want is to see
the scene to last beyond year 2000.
if that happens, i'll be a very happy
man!!!

cheers....

and that concludes our interview
for this month. watch out for our next
issue when we interview ....

we'll just keep that secret for now.
read about it next month.
