--------------------------- -- ------ --- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ------ ----- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ---- --------------------------- - _____________ _ MAY - EDITION 1998 ----------------- - __ ___________________________________ __ TALES OF THE CREST -- ----------------------------------- -- THE CREST edition number 11 has taken complete control over your multimedia 8-bit spaceship and will now take you into the yet undiscovered parts of the scene-galaxy... Lean back relaxed and enjoy the journey into the uncertain future. ...After we had landed on the planet called "CBM64" we had to realize that there are also small green creatures called AustrALIENS besides the "normal" scene creatures... One of these AustrALIENS had his own dominating spaceship. And after he recognized the abilities of our crew member and engineer"UZZY", he decided to try everything to make him build a new engine for his spaceship... So UZZY was so nice and build an engine for him, which was nearly the same like the one we used. Then he flew to a public show to present his new engine and told the scene creatures that he is the first one to have this engine and that engineer and commander UZZY is now a new crew member of his spaceship. But the strange thing was that UZZY didn't know anything about this! Then he also claimed that our engine is the same as his, as if we stole it from him and not the other way around... Then commander UZZY got to know of this and cleared the shit out... He admited that he build the engine for that AustrALIEN, but didn't know that this creature wanted to be a crew member of his spaceship... Commander UZZY of course decided to stay with our spaceship and build the original engine still for us. So this shit is somehow beamed away, but still it's not so nice that there are still creatures around trying to spin intrigues. Anyway, let's hope that this won't happen again and there again can come peace to the nice planet called "CBM64". Hey, what's that?!? -TRANSMISSION FROM OUTER SPACE!- We'll get new support from the moon MEGASTYLE for our spaceship... We'll get a new leutnant on our spaceship, who'll help us completing on of our mission called "demo-reviews"... This one is Mr. >>> LLOYD of MEGASTYLE PRODUCTIONS <<< He freshly came back from his retiring and is now working in space again to support us with fresh music-reviews for the "WORLD OF BYTES" section. So our crew is getting stronger and stronger to keep the space clean from aliens... Stop! We're receiving another TRANSMISSION FROM OUTER SPACE! Put it on the screen! This figure called ECSIC of DYTEC/ACSORE did this for us and then was beamed up again and so disappeared and was never ever seen since then again... Besides him there were some more strange creatures who helped us completing our mission called "THE CREST Issue No. 11"... __ ___________________________________ __ SCENE SPOTLIGHTER -- ----------------------------------- -- This month there happened quite a lot of things. Especially in the demo-scene. Mainly this was of course caused by the parties that took place. So this time I had to write a little bit more... :( But I guess this high action level won't last long, because the well-known summerhole isn't far away anymore. To see some news of your groups in here, better leave us E-mail at. DYTEC(at)HOTMAIL.COM And now here we go... oversea scene report
The "Overseas" Scene Report by Uzzy of RPG Well, another month has passed, and another issue of The Crest is of course gracing your screens. And, through the din of automatic weapons fire and with extremely loud Pink Floyd blasting it's way through my head, the token American guy comes through yet again with another look at this thing we call the NTSC scene. After a fitful bit of web-surfing I came away with a few decent pieces of information, hopefully accurate. And then some of the BBS people and users groups came through and offered some more info. Thanks to all who have contributed to my store of pointless scene information! Anyway, as is usual, if I get anything wrong and you want a swift correction and/or apology, or if you have any bits of information, suggestions, marriage proposals or death threats, you can always send them via the Internet to me at: arthur.heller(at)anwcbbs.uu.holonet.net The point of this article is to showcase the NTSC news at large, and not to read a 20k rant from me, so let's just get on with the meat of this, alright? I knew you'd agree. THE NEWS - Apparently, Arcane, demo group from yesteryear, has reformed (or never disbanded at all, contrary to what I've been told). I'm under the impression that a demo from them was released at the NTSC Demo Conference on IRC. - Uber was booted from RPG. Consequently, his board, Spellbound, has gone down perminantly. A few refugees have been spotted on The Bass Planet. In other RPG news, Warnock has again been placed on ACTIVE status. - Local-H and The Fatman joined BCI as a second group. - Exclusive news! As reported last month, Loadstar 128, a commercial diskmag, was slated to cease publication in a few months. Apparently, though, the guys at Loadstar found a way to continue publication, and the magazine will continue! - In a recent poll, 64% of the American public agreed that President Clinton probably DID have affairs, but that... Wait a minute... this doesn't belong in this chapter. I hate when that happens. And, of course, your ubiquitous group-list update. ASU (Anarchy Systems Unlimited): Grubby, Scanner ARCANE: Moloch, PK BCI (Bad Coders International): Local-H, Phred, Sketch, Udd CCS (Carcass Creation Service): Deathangel's Shadow, Fungus, Hoffman, Natas, Necrophobic, Pinball Wizard, Shadowmaster, TMR, Wideload, Zirc0 ELECTRON: Dokken, The Gambler FOE (Forces Of Evil): The Phantom, Paladin, Wrong Way FTA (From The Ashes): Burning Horizon, Diskmaster, Firestalker, Trillian MILLENIUM: Roy Batty, The Fatman OMNI: Bonestripper, Light, Nerves, Prowler, Spectre PSW: MacBeth, Shroom, Fuzz RPG (The Renegade Programming Group): Chameleon, Cyberad, Dr.Doom, The Heretic, Ken, Pegasus, Uzzy, Warnock STORM: Cybernoid, Negspect STYLE: Alter Ego, Deathlok, Decomp, DW, Elwix, Firefoot, Massive Onslaught, PK, Repose, Warnock, The Wiz VENOM: The Hobbit, Kickback, WSoft That about wraps up the NTSC scene for this month. A bit happened, a bit didn't happen, but all in all some activity prevailed and gave me something to write about so my place in this mag has purpose. Oh, last month I mumbled about charts. Sorry, no charts yet, I feel I can't really give accurate charts when I haven't seen the newest demos. I'm also working on making a catchy Email form, with cool ASCII art that I can't do without bursting an artery in my brain yet. Maybe next month. - Uzzy/RPG - "Hey, calm down and have some DIP!" - George Carlin

They got onto the number one spot! They kicked SMASH DESIGNS off the throne down to the third place. Let's see how the audience will react on the demos both groups released at the MEKKA +SYMPOSIUM'98. COMA took a free fall from 4 down to 9, while TABOO jumped from 10 up to 7. DRAX managed to climb one place from 3 up to 2 and FANTA even made a huge jump from 6 up to 3! But winner of the month is KRISTIAN ROSTOEN, who re-entered the Top Ten straight at the 5th place! Loser of the month is JEFF, no doubt! Last month the number two, he left the chart this month! -- ----------------------------------------------- -- The May can be seen as a guiding month concerning the charts, because there were many important parties in April, most important the MEKKA+ SYMPOSIUM'98. We'll see what impact this will have on the charts from the legal sector. the april list
-- ----------------------------------- -- THE APRIL LIST __ ___________________________________ __ Hi and welcome again to the LIST in THE CREST! This time we had a more than slow month, and so I can spend my time outside in the sun... . Don't forget to contact me for any problems, ideas or comments concerning this LIST at my email: THE_DODGER(AT)HOTMAIL.COM But now let's start with the SPOTLIGHT NEWS... . -- ---------------------------------------------- -- SPOTLIGHT NEWS APRIL __ ___________________________________ __ The 1st days of APRIL the good old EVIL ISLAND (AFL WHQ) went down for unknown reasons... . Later this month the reason was clear... the SYSOP had some trouble with the LONGDISTANCE-COMPANY SPRINT and he also moved the complete EQUIPMENT within' his house... . So we can expect the BOARD online again soon... . And finally it was anounced why THE DUNGEON went offline some months ago... . The BOARD had a major HD-CRASH and the SYSOP has actually no time to solve the problems and to bring the BOARD back online. However, it will be online again later this year!!! With the guys from ONSLAUGT calling out again, it was an quite active month on the US-BOARDS, calling- wise! I'd be happy if I could say the same about the RELEASES... but look yourself! The RELEASES got taken from the following BOARDS: THE BASS PLANET ++X-XXX-XXX-XXXX (C)+XENON WHQ DEADZONE ++X-XXX-XXX-XXXX ONSLAUGHT WHQ Now let's go on with the RELEASES... DYNAMIC TECHNOLOGIES (ger) -5,0 POINTS ---------------------------------------------------- The EASTGERMANS had no luck with releasing the fixed version of PILE UP (-5,0 POINTS). As a slightly different version got released by F4CG (FIX by EMPIRE) some years ago, they only earned RE- RELEASE-POINTS for this one. FAIRLIGHT (den, swe, hun...) 0,0 POINTS ----------------------------------------------------- They put out the quite funny game named FOX AND HOUNDS (0,0 POINTS) from LOADSTAR. As the game was written in COMPILED BASIC, they'll get no POINTS for it! HITMEN (ger, swe, pol...) 0,2 POINTS -------------------------------------------------------- After some months of silence HITMEN returned with the quite ugly PREVIEW of TARGET 2 (0,2 POINTS) from LEPSI DE. ONSLAUGHT (aus, pol, ger...) 0,5 POINTS -------------------------------------------------------- The guys from ONSLAUGHT showed up with the really nice PREVIEW of BLOCKS (0,5 POINTS) from SCORN! This was all for the last MONTH... skip the page for the complete LIST... . RELEASECHARTS APRIL 1998 ---------------------------- PLACE GROUP POINTS RELEASES -------------------------------------------------------- 1 ONSLAUGHT 0,5 1 2 HITMEN 0,2 1 3 FAIRLIGHT 0,0 1 4 DYNAMIC TECHNOLOGIES - 5,0 1 A really poor LIST this time... and I'm not sure if the next months will be better, as the summer is already here, and so the scene is hanging on the beaches... . This was all for my JOB this time... hope you all are having good days outside, as the weather is more than great actually... But try to be atleast a bit active, so that the next months are not that dry releasewise like this time! THE DODGER/THE CREST MAGAZINE -- ------------------------ --

__ ___________________________________ __ LEGAL PROFILE OF THE MONTH -- ----------------------------------- -- Another month... Another interview with a guy from the demo scene. This time we can again present you a legendary pal. He was a very popular coder and a member of one of the groups, who can really call themselves legends. His most famous demo ever probably was THE LAST TRAKTOR 3! I guess now everyone knows that I'm talking about no one less than... >>> BAGDER of HORIZON <<< Have fun reading this nice smalltalk! (C): Hello BAGDER! Thank you very much for being so nice and giving us the chance to do this interview with you... So, please introduce yourself a little bit to our readers! (B): Ok, my name is Daniel Stenberg and I am now 27 years old. I'm living in Solna, Sweden and I work as a programmer for the company called FRONTEC. I am a consultant, which means I program for anyone that hires me to the magic for some 700 SEK an hour. My professional programming is mainly restricted to Unix and real time systems and most of my time is sold to a not entirelly unknown Swedish company named ERICSSON. One of my greatest hobbies is programming! I spend something like around 20 hours a week of my spare time doing programming, most often Unix and web related stuff. You can get a glimpse of some of my projects at my homepage at... http://www.fts.frontec.se/-dast ---------------------------------- Other hobbies include travelling (I just recently came from a one month tour in the northern parts of India - quite a thrill!), the very popular Swedish sport named "Innebandy" (like indoor hockey kind of) and Kayak Polo (or why not white water kayaking!). I spend a lot of time with my girlfriend Anja. (C): Oh, thanx for these infos! Seems you are a very active guy! Cool! And how did you come in contact with the C64 and its demo scene? (B): I and my brother bought our C64 together 1985. My good friend Kjell (known as KJER) already had one and we had a lot of fun times in front of his machine already before we bought our own. The first years we spent gaming and doing more Basic programming. We started doing some small attempts at Assembler during 1987. The three of us loved all those demos of that time and we wanted very badly to make our own ones. We called ourselves CONFUSING SOLUTIONS, CONSOL. During the autumn 1987 we found out that TRIAD and FAIRLIGHT were gonna have a X-mas party in a school very near where we lived at that time and we went there and we released our first demo ever that reached anyone! ;) ANIMAX was the name. (C): Ah, nice story, really! Which groups have you then been in all over your scene career? (B): - CONFUSING SOLUTION (CONSOL) from the beginning of time - SUPER SWAP SWEDEN (SSS) from March 1988 - HORIZON (HZ) from the summer 1988 (C): And what did you as legal scener think of the illegal part of the scene? (B): Well, in the beginning I did trade some games with people but it didn't take long until I grew totally bored with them and decided that demos are so much more fun. It was more because gaming was boring than it was a moral issue. As time developed, I also think that legal was the only way to go. Cracking was never anything that attracted our attention, it is not constructive as demo making is. (C): You are not the first guy to mention this fact, hehe! So, why did you become a coder and not a painter or something else? (B): Hehe, as I just said, cracking was never an issue, when cracking you don't make anything yourself, you just trying to break someone else's code. I just love making my own things take shape, and do cool things I like to see. The reason I chose to be a coder was that in our world at that time, there was no alternative. The biggest fun - without competition - you could have with your computer is programming it (and in fact, I still think so!). (C): And are there any coders, who you respect a lot? (B): I do have a lot of respect for many coders. Those ones that invented new things, spent lots of time trying hard and really made a difference. I do remember a few people that made cool things, and the coders of groups like UPFRONT and THE JUDGES come to my mind. I also think that my friends in HORIZON are/were really awesome coders for whom I have great respect. (C): Yeah, they truely were! And now please give us your favourites in the following categories! (B): Demo: BONANZA by MICROSYSTEMS DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY, the first full-screen full- motion hires flying around we ever saw. BOGALOO and EXILION codes that masterpiece before they joined KORIZON. Demo Group: THE JUDGES. Graphician.: Can't remember nor mention a single one in this subject. Composer... : I liked the work from many artists, never ahd any bug favourite. Game............: HAT-TRICK, the ice-hockey game! ( (C): Yeah, that one kixx! ) Magazine........ : Overated products. Book.............: GIBSON is a favourite author. Movie........... : Anything off the crappy Hollywood line of films. I love ONCE WERE WARRIORS and PULP FICTION. Music: Industrial, hard synth: FRONT 242, NITZER EBB, COVENANT, FRONTLINE ASSEMBLY, BIGOD 20... You get the picture. (C): Hey, what do you think of the Internet? Is this the way to go for the CBM64 scene? (B): Of course, Internet is the right future for everything! (Well, almost.) (C): Seems you like the Internet a lot... Tell us please: What's up with HORIZON on the C64? Can we sometime expect a comeback demo from you guys? (B): Nope. We will hardly ever make anything again on any platform using the name HORIZON. We have been doing things on Amiga using the name FREXXWARE, and we do stuff using the company name HAXX now. (C): A pity! Would have been too nice to be true! Did you ever have any troubles with someone in the scene back then? (B): Yes, unfortunately. Like IKARI when they cheated hard in the demo competition in the party in (Slagelse?) Denmark, '88 or '89. Like the Amiga crew named HIROZON for being twits and thinking they had the right to the name (we once were the same group when the Amiga guys were kicked out). We were mainly peaceful guys, but we never could stand cluelessness nor foulplay. (C): But if my memory serves me right, you once had a little trouble with SCROLL/MSP... You said that he stole a part from you to use it in BRAINSTORM 3, if I'm not wrong... So, could you please tell a little bit about this story from your point of view? What happened exaclty, what was the point and how did the story come to an end? (B): I can't recall this incident at all actually! ;) In general, we've had everything ripped, stolen and re-used that we never allowed. We got graphics, code, our music routine and even scroll texts (!) stolen. The computer scene, and computer people in general today, is crowded with all these guys that went easy living and as fast lane to success. Since there is no such thing as a short cut to knowledge or an easy way to learn hard stuff, you either skip learning it and do something else or you steal. I don't have any hard feelings against those poor souls that used to steal our products during our 64-years, it's more kind of sad and pathetic. I guess most of those guys did end up making "multi-media presentations" with some Microsoft tools under Windows 3.1! ;) (C): Haha! Now let's get over to some brainstorming... (B): Trackmos.: Stupid name. Boards...: Old-days-tech Phreaking: Caught by the law Parties..: Fun, snaked, demos, coding, code, pizza, no sleeping until competition, deadlines being moved Sex........: What's that? Alcohol....: Not when coding, thanks. PC.........: The only surviving personal computer platform, unfortunately. Makes a good platform for small money when you run Linux on it. (C): Aha... Some nice and funny answers, hehe! Tell me, what thing, that you did in the CBM64 scene, are you most proud of? Maybe one special of your demos? (B): I really can't point out any specific product that made me especially proud. I think I was most proud of the fact that HORIZON turned out to be that perfect group we wanted it to become. We were 8 great (in my opinion) coders, we were all very good friends, we took life and computer stuff lightly, we had lots of laughs, we had lots of meetings, we did lots and lots of demos together that I think was pretty good for that time. (C): Yeah, it really was! As you said before, you started in the scene a very long time ago... What do you think of today's scene? Do you like it? Or do you more prefer the spirit of the old days? (B): I am very much off the scene these days and I haven't seen a C64 demo in years. I know development have moved technology forward a lot further than when I last made anything. The little contact I have had with the C64 scene of today (most in the C64 IRC channels) have not really impressed me (not meaning to be rude or speaking bad about anyone) and have made me think and long back to "the good old days". Although I believe you often get nostalgic and remember history as better than it actually was. One thing is for sure, and that is that demos slowly turned into more and more graphic intensive products (from originally mostly being programmers showing off to each other). Since I was a pure coder and still watch and think of demos as being coding show-offs, I thought it grew more and more boring doing demos since you would need and make all the graohical stuff. Heck, today you can even see demos that are made by 8 graphic guys and one coder, we were 8 coders and one graphic guy... (C): But you were popular anyway! So people today still like your work! By the way, what thing in the C64 did you like most? (B): Friendship. Getting to know ppl at parties, having fun with your friends coding away all nights and days. (C): And what did you hate the most? (B): The large amount of lamers and the large amount of hooligans and vandals. We arranged quite a few parties during our most active days, and I don't think a single one ended without some people destroying and damaging property we had to pay for afterwards. I hate to say many of them came from Norway, and a bunch of them even was considered to be our friends before they did it. (C): Yeah, things like this really suck! So, everything has to come to an end, so has this interview... Anything you want to say? Maybe some greetings or shouts? (B): Well, my friends know me and I don't need to say hi to all of you, I would only risk missing someone's namere and he'd feel left out. To all of you who know or knew me, thanks for a great time with a great computer. Feel free to get in touch, I'm as active as ever programming... Meet me at... http://www.fts.frontec.se/-dast ----------------------------------- (C): Okay Daniel, that's it! Thanks for your time! __ ___________________________________ __ ILLEGAL PROFILE OF THE MONTH -- ----------------------------------- -- Again we managed it to get a legendary pal from the illegal part of the scene to make a smalltalk for our magazine with us. This time it is with a pal, who was in groups like PARAMOUNT, GENESIS PROJECT, DOMINATORS and AVANTGARDE and he is still active! Yes, it is... >>> JACK DANIELS of F4CG <<< Now enjoy this interview! (C): Hello JACK DANIELS! Nice to have you here in this profiler! To make a first start, please introduce yourself a little bit to our readers! (J): Hi there! Well, my real name is Tobias Richter, I am 24 and a student for tourism related economics here at the German North-Sea coast. Moreover I own a little travel-agency called "GO! Travel Services" along with my brother. As you can imagine, there is not much spare-time left, but in case there is, I like to go out with friends, doesn't matter if it is to parties, bars, clubs or whatever as long as it is fun. Furthermore I am a big soccer fan and like to play myself as well. (C): Like everyone else we also want to ask you, how you started your computer career? (J): Honestly, I don't remember exactly when I got my first C64 but it must have been during the years 1984 or 1985. I entered the scene in 1985 together with 3DK as we built up the STORMTROOPERS and renamed them quite soon into TROOPERS as the other name was too long. At that time we started swapping and got our first contacts. Our first group with own productions was COCAINE together with DUCK DUNN (better known from his time in the CRAZY + LOTUS coop). During this time the first cracks and even one demo got released. (C): And which groups have you been in so far? (J): As just mentioned COCAINE, afterwards ORION, ATG, PARAMOUNT, GENESIS PROJECT, DOMINATORS, AVANTGARDE and noe finally F4CG where I am still in. (C): Why did you go to F4CG after the death of AVANTGARDE? Only because of DEFF joining them or what? (J): No, that's not the only reason. I have been very close with the F4CG family since ages and so it was my first choice. And I don't have to tell you about F4CG's long history and reputation... (C): Aha, so that's why... And why did you and 3DK leave GENESIS PROJECT and join DOMINATORS back then? (J): That's a long story... But to sum it up ANTICHRIST wanted to have influence on our magazine CORRUPTION and as it has always been a neutral magazine, we didn't allow him to interfere. He wrote some texts against CRAZY and wanted us to publish them and in addition to put the famous Anti-Mamba intro infront of the mag. But because of the fact that we had a good relation to PETER and GOTCHA and that we wanted our mag to remain unbiased we didn't do either of it. After ANTICHRIST saw the finished and released issue of CORRUPTION he kicked us out of GP and we joined DOMINATORS. And that was just the short version... Anyway, years later I had long chats with Oliver and we cleared all the problems that were between us... So just a funny episode of a long time in the scene. (C): Oh, very interesting. Good to know... I learn something new everyday. : ) Now let's continue with your favourites, okay? (J): Demo Group: BLACKMAIL, ATG, FLASH INC., CREST Demo......: DUTCH BREEZE/BML and ROYALITY by DOMINATORS DESIGN Coder.......: SES/GP and EINSTEIN/ATG/ DOMINATORS DESIGN (I have seen what he was able to do...) Graphician....: HEIN Composer......: EVS and A-MAN Cracking Group: DOMINATORS Cracker.......: SNACKY Game..........: CALIFORNIA GAMES Disc Magazine..: SHOCK, MAMBA Book...........: A SON OF THE CIRCUS by JOHN IRVING Movie............: BLUES BROTHERS Music............: Depends on my mood. (C): Some nice and interesting answers you gave, hehe... So, do you think that the C64 scene is already dead? If not, how long do you think will it stay alive? (J): The scene will remain alive as long as there are still some freaks who joy it. When I look around in the scene nowadays there are more people because of nostalgic reasons than anything else. (C): Yeah, right... Exactly my opinion! Can you say us please, which was the best experience you had in your scene career on our beloved CBM64? (J): The best experiences were when I met long time scene-friends of mine in real life. This friendship that holds some of us together is incredible and cannot be compared to any other scene. I could give you lots of examples for that but I'll try to keep it short. One example is when I visited friends like SCORPIE (Belgium), JRC (Spain), Gabriel (Italy) or Phoenix(Australia) and stayed at their places and went out partying with them and had real fun. The other thing is meeting up at parties like the ECTS Show in London or the TRIBUTE party. I can't understand people who spent the whole time behind the monitor at the party, I always went out with some sceners - just had fun. So to sum it up, the best experience were all the people I met thanks to the scene, and the friends I found there. I am still in contact with most of the persons I consider friends, though they even don't have a C64 or a relation to the scene anymore. (C): Nice aspect, you mentioned! Cool... And what don't you like that much about the scene? (J): That I don't have the time for it right now... (C): Hehe, tricky question - tricky answer! By the way, do you miss the spirit of the so called GOLDEN days? What's your opinion about the scene nowadays? (J): As you can see from the answer before the last one, I do of course miss the spirit of the old days. A lot of my friends and a lot of real scene legends have left the scene, so it can't be the same anymore! Let me be honest, I don't know much about the scene nowadays as I simply don't have the time to be as active as I used to be in former years, so I don't want to judge it. (C): Another question to let us go back into the old days, hehe... I always ask that people in interviews, because it's just a more or less important "part" of the scene... So, did you ever have any problems with other sceners or maybe even had some wars? (J): Yeah, quite a lot of them actually. That was mainly during the time I was on the boards in the States. ANTICHRIST, THOR, DUKE or RADAR just to mention a few. Even though I have a good relation to most of them nowadays. When I remember how much fun we had with RADAR during the TRIBUTE party in Gothenburg and how we have been fighting on the BBS'... Funny. (C): Yup, with wars it's really mostly very funny. Nice to see that you have the same attitude. ; ) By the way, if you had to go to a lonely island and you could only three things with you, what would these three things be? (J): A brewery, a PC with Internet connection and Cindy Crawford. (C): Hehe... Funny! I just imagine how you are taking a brewery with you... : ) Also interesting that you mentioned Cindy Crawford. You are the second one we asked this question and you are the second one replying with a woman's name! Nice to see that sceners don't only have the computer in mind... But let's leave this topic... What is your opinion about the new Internet- BBSs? Do they give you the same feeling as the real CBM64 BBSs? (J): No, not at all. I somehow liked the way the boards looked like in UCBBS or C-BASE (Cyborg modded of course!) and the boards in the net still look different. But basically it is a good idea and it is amazing who pops up there once in a while, as almost every former scener has an Internet account today. (C): Yes, that's the only positive point about these net boards... Another small tricky question: How many sceners do you think are in the scene right now compared to its best times? (J): Haven't counted them, but I guess it's only like 10% of the people left. (C): And now the show goes on with some brainstorming... (J): PC........: Don't wanna live without it anymore. Internet...: Most important invention of the last decades. Phreaking: Necessary to call the boards. Boards...: They kept the scene going some years ago. That was a good and funny time. Trackmos.: Nice. Parties..: Scenewise: Good to meet people you don't see too often and to have some beers together. Sex........: One of the reasons to live. Alcohol: Speeds up every party. (C): Now I also want to know, what importance the CBM64 had or still has in your life? (J): It was an important time for me as I was still active and spent lots of time on the boards or with swapping, writing for CORRUPTION or whatever. I met lots of nice persons from all over the world, and that's what it is all about. But it didn't have any impact on my real life, except for the fact that I still have some friends around the globe I know from the C64 scene. (C): Hey, that is something, isn't it!?! Good that you mentioned CORRUPTION again... Why did you and DEFF stop doing it? (J): That's quite simple, we didn't have the time anymore. There are periods in your life where it is no problem to spend a whole weekend on writing the texts for a magazine, but as these times were over, we decided to stop. We had to concentrate on our jobs/studies and our girl- friends and other friends were going mad as well... So... (C): Yeah, understandable... Let's hope that this destiny won't get us, THE CREST staff, as well, hehe... :) Now you can talk about whatever you want, because we got through all the questions... (J): Okay, cheers out to the F4CG family, the PROPAGANDA staff, Andreas, Jo, Gabriele, Mario and all ex-AVANTGARDE'rs, Con, Jason, Shawn, Dave, Barry, Jean and all the others I met during my time in the scene. All old contacts of mine shall free to contact me at: TOBIAS.RICHTER(at)NWN.DE and/or look at my home at... http://privat.schlund.de/t_richter/ ------------------------------------ Also to find some interesting C64 stuff! (C): Yo, that's it! Thank you so very much for being so nice and answering all these questions so patiently! Have a nice time... __ ___________________________________ __ WORLD OF ARTS -- ----------------------------------- -- It's time again to take a closer look at some competition graphics with no mercy... This time I'll review the ones from the MEKKA + SYMPOSIUM '98. Overall you can say that the competition got supported quite well, even though some of the graphics can be called "cheap-fake" ones... But that is the negative side that haunts every comppetition! The results at the party looked like this... 1. DU GEMEINER MOERDER... by RAYDEN/AFL + CYCLONE 2. FANTASTICA by HANS WURST/ONSLAUGHT 3. I'LL REMEMBER by HARDSEQUENCER/DYTEC 4. WELCOME TO TELEKOM by RAZE/HITMEN 5. FIRESTARTER by SEBALOZ/LEPSI DE 6. CHRIS HUELSBECK by ZEALOT/OUT OF ORDER 7. TYRANY by AEG/SMASH DESIGNS 8. MONSTER by KATON/LEPSI DE 9. KNIGHT by CRAYON/ANUBIS 10. LURKING DEATH by ASSASSIN/WILLOW 11. LOVE by ZEITGEIST/CIVITAS 12. DISSECTOR by BRAINSMASHER/CIVITAS 13. KENTUCKY by FLIP/CENTRIC 14. AMAZON by BLEZE/WILLOW 15. PORTRAET DES PROSP. ...by BUGJAM/ROLE 16. EMPTYVIEW by HOGAN/REFLEX I hope that my result-list won't be very different. :) But like almost all graphician I consider more the technical side of the graphic... And now over to the graphics themselves... HARDSEQUENCER/DYTEC - --------------- - A MADONNA-coverup, which was painted in the I-FLI mode... You can see MADONNA's face, which gets surrounded by colour-waves. Originality: 40% Conversion: 52% Mode-Usage: 25% The I-FLI mode didn't get used very well. The whole thing also might have been possible in Koala or at least in FLI. > 39% KATON/LEPSI DE - ---------- - An I-FLI picture, which shows us an (alien) figure, that gets fightened by courageous hero. The whole thing gets surrounded by colour-waves... Originality: 61% Conversion: 74% Mode-Usage: 82% A really well-painted I-FLI picture, although it flickers a lot. > 72% BRAINSMASHER/CIVITAS - ---------------- - A Koala-something, that can be called nothing but ugly... Haven't got a clue what this should be! Originality: 3% Conversion: 1% Mode-Usage: 15% No more explainations needed! > 6% SEBALOZ/LEPSI - --------- - An MCI-picture, which shows a warrior... Well painted and good colour combination... Originality: 53% Conversion: 56% Mode Usage: 50% One of the better competition graphics... But there are some parts in the picture that are flickering very much! > 53% HOGAN/REFLEX - -------- - Again an Interlace picture that mirrors a monster(?) face... Surrounded by colour-waves... Originality: 43% Conversion: 36% Mode Usage: 41% With some more fill ins and colours this picture possibly might have scored a but higher. > 40% ZEALOT/OUT OF ORDER - ---------------------------- - Converted or not, that's the question here... What ever... This one displays the ugly something, that some guys call a face... ;) ...and in this case the face of the well-known composer CHRIS HUELSBECK (Giana Sisters)... Originality: 25% Conversion: 28% Mode Usage: 15% A pity that only four colours got used for the whole picture! To less for a mode that takes more than 120 blocks unpacked... > 23% CRAYON/ANUBIS - ------------------ - An I-FLI picture that possibly displays a knight... The screen got filled up with a logo... Originality: 12% Conversion: 30% Mode Usage: 31% > 24% RAYDEN + CYCLONE - ---------------------- - And again one of the ripped, eh sorry converted RAYDEN-productions... An I-FLI picture showing an angry looking face... Very colourfull but badly converted! Originality: 85% Conversion: 10% Mode Usage: 70% The conversion (in that case digitally converted from Amiga) is very bad! ...Usually this picture shouldn't have been allowed to take place in this competition... A poverty certificate for the organisers and even lamer from RAYDEN! > 55% BLEZE/WILLOW - ---------------- - A FLI-picture that shows some kind of woman as warrior... Bad colours and shape! Originality: 5% Conversion: 12% Mode-Usage: 25% No other comments... > 14% RAZE/HITMEN - ------- - A very well painted hires single colour picture that obviously shows a man, totally nerved by the Telekom... Originality: 51% Conversion: 42% Mode Usage: 50% The conversion is very good, except some smaller mistakes... > 48% AEG/SMASH DESIGNS - ------------------------ - A Koala-picture showing a landscape from outer space... A quite pretty one... Originality: 30% Conversion: 48% Mode Usage: 65% Because of missing originality I can only give 30%... > 48% BUGJAM/ROLE - ---------------- - Another Koala-picture taking us into another world. The shapes and colour-combinations weren't chosen very well partly. Originality: 35% Conversion: 36% Mode Usage: 56% With a little bit more sense for quality this picture might have become quite good. But as mentioned before, the shapes are partly too strange! > 42% HANS WURST/ONSLAUGHT - ------------------------------ - An I-FLI picture, which shows a lying nacked girl. Nothing special at all... Originality: 50% Conversion: 40% Mode Usage: 44% Also here some shapes are a little bit strange, even though the I-FLI mode gives good possibilities to do them better. Btw, this picture surely is digitally converted. So no real artistic value... > 45% ZEITGEIST/CIVITAS - ------------- - One of the Koala-pictures that better never should have seen daylight... I wonder what the painter wants to say us with this picture... Originality: 10% Conversion: 3% Mode Usage: 10% No more words to waste for this one... > 8% FLIP/CENTRIC - -------- - Another one of the bad compo-contributions. But this time in the I-FLI mode... Displayed is a girl (perhaps a bitch?)... Originality: 10% Conversion: 5% Mode Usage: 2% Bad shapes, massive flickering and many other things to find fault with... > 6% ASSASSIN/WILLOW - ----------- - A Koala-picture that shows two guys with a gun looking for each other to shoot each other. Originality: 45% Conversion: 22% Mode Usage: 29% The two guys look really strange... Especially their faces were painted badly. The rest is just too simple. > 32% That were all pictures from the competition... After all these reviews we get the following ranking: 1. MONSTER by KATON 72% 2. DU GEMEINER MOERDER... by RAYDEN + CYCLONE 55% 3. FIRESTARTER by SEBALOZ 53% 4. WELCOME TO TELEKOM by RAZE 48% TYRANY by AEG 48% 6. FANTASTICA by HANS WURST 45% 7. PORTRAET DES PROSP. ...by BUGJAM 42% 8. EMPTYVIEW by HOGAN 40% 9. I'LL REMEMBER by HARDSEQUENCER 39% 10. LURKING DEATH by ASSASSIN 32% 11. KNIGHT by CRAYON 24% 12. CHRIS HUELSBECK by ZEALOT 23% 13. AMAZON by BLEZE 14% 14. LOVE by ZEITGEIST 8% 15. DISSECTOR by BRAINSMASHER 6% KENTUCKY by FLIP 6% For the future I wish that more so-called graphicians would concentrate on selfmade-products and quality. I cannot accept it that an Amiga-converted picture wins the CBM64 competition! ...Even if the one painted the picture himself on the Amiga! Convertion stays convertion! I also want to excuse me for this lousy review of the competition pictures, but I had to do it under extreme time pressure because of personal problems and HARDSEQUENCER couldn't do the review, as he contributed to the competition himself. So, that explains why. 'Til next time... SHOK'RAY -------- _ _____________ (C) THE CREST 1998 - --------------- -

__ ___________________________________ __ WORLD OF BYTES -- ----------------------------------- -- Here we go again with the chapter that covers the demo-scene. This time we can of course present you the latest infos about what is going on on the demo- market as well as a review! And this time we can give you a closer look at the 3rd place from the demo- competition at the MEKKA +SYMPOSIUM'98... It's... >>> KRESTYRON by OXYRON + CREST <<< But first let's start with some news and happenings. The April was a very good month for the demo-scene! There were quite a nice bunch of more or less important parties, where a good amount of demos got released. Most important was of course the MEKKA +SYMPOSIUM- party, which took place at the Easter weekend. First place there was the maybe last demo from AEG/SMASH DESIGNS called OUR DARKNESS, followed by REANIMATED by HITMEN and a great co-op demo by OXYRON and CREST named KRESTYRON, which you'll find reviewed some pages later in this chapter... Besides this also PADUA released a dentro called SPLISH SPLASH, CASCADE the sequel to TRIP TO NEPA(L) and also some other demos from groups like W. O.W., WILLOW and others. Another party was RUSH HOURS at the end of April. There got released about 10 demos. First place became PATHOLOGY by FRACTION followed by DRACO's TAKE OFF. Places 3 and 4 got gained by RULE 3 and LEPSI DE. There also got released the new trackmo from ARISE named APPLAUSE, but it was damaged when showing in the competition. You guys can also look forward to the 5 YEARS DEMO from CAUTION at the NORTH PARTY 2. Besides this there is also said to be released a new LEPSI DE demo by ZIELOK soon. So, watch out! And now let's go with the review of... __ ___________________________________ __ >>> KRESTYRON <<< -- ----------------- A co-op demo OXYRON and CREST. __ ___________________________________ __ Coding review by..: DANZIG/ALPHAFLIGHT 1970 Music review by...: KRISTIAN ROSTOEN/SHAPE/HITMEN Graphic review by: SHOK'RAY/MSP + HARDSEQUENCER -- ------------------------------------------------ -- It's me again, DANZIG, reviewing another demo for THE CREST magazine! Since we, the rulers from THE CREST, have our very own taste in demos, we prefer the old styled and really cool coded ones. I review the demo from the MEKKA +SYMPOSIUM-party WE declaired as the best one: KRESTYRON/OXYRON! First of all I have to excuse the fact that demos I like I always praise as soooo fucking cool, but they always are! And this time it's again the same. Now let's begin where all demos start: THE INTRO - ------ - Coding..: Displayed is a Hires-FLI logo saying CREST in some strange letters (seems to be an old work from Daniel) with a nice Hires-FLI- rasterroutine, leaving the painted colours as the last. Pretty cool! > 79% Graphic: The CREST logo in Hires-FLI isn't that genious. Really positive about this logo is that the graphic mode got used very well by using many different colours. > 47% Music.......: Much has been said and written about MITCH +DANE. Some has been very positive while some has been extremely negative. Whether or not the critics has been fair is really not for me to decide but I have however made up my own opinion about this swedish duo (don't worry, I won't hold the fact that you are Swedes against you ; ) ) and I think I'll have to place myself somewhere in the middle of the two poles, with a bit more weight on the positive. They have often been accused of being pure VIBRANTS rip-offs and I am sort of willing to agree on this. The intro-music starts off in a VERY vibrantish way, and if I didn't know better I sure as hell would have mistaken it for being a DRAX-tune. It's funky, got a nice melody and some groovy bass-lines. It does, however, miss those little variations, breaks and some other small details to make it a real killer. But, for what it's worth, it's just an intro-tune and it sure gets the job done. > 80% FIRST PART - ------------ - Coding..: A big multicolor-resoluted plasma with 7 (!) colours. I laughed my ass away when GRAHAM told me about him being fed up with all these 4X4-plasma-effects, a resolution HE invented! The routine uses a kind of FLD with stretched sprites to display. Originally! AEG tried to copy the plasma in his lame demo but his one is smaller, only 3 colored and NOT one frame (and ugly : ( ). The rasters behind the plasma are zoomed at the beginning of the part and also some colorfading is installed sentencing the phrase: "OXYRON: Code, not design". A lie after all the years! ;) > 92% Graphic: Nothing except a hard to read 2X2 font. No rating for this as it can't be seen as a real graphic. Music....: Now, is it really that bad to be accused of sounding like VIBRANTS? A few years ago I would have had to answer YES to that question. Why? Because back then most music sounded like that and as DRAX was still active and doing what only he could, any attempt of sounding like him would have made you just another pathetic wannabe in the crowd. But it's not like that anymore. Times have changed. It's a new era. Most of those who topped the charts in the late 80's and early 90's have moved on, and it seems they took the groove, the funk, the good melodies and the original tunes with them on their journey. That kind of music is not longer what counts, what matters. Now it's monotone and heavy rhythms and melodies that floats through the SID. Is it for the good? It it what we need? I don't know but it sure makes me appreciate composers like MITCH +DANE a whole lot more. But let's come to the tune now... :) Out of my stereo floats some music that reminds me a lot more of the swedish duo compared to the first one. Very fast with some very short notes. It's a rather short tune, I doubt it lasts for much more that a minute. Maybe that's why it bores me. It has nothing special in it that appeals to me. There are some ok breaks but all in all this sounds like it was made in about minute as well. > 55% SECOND PART - -------------- - Coding..: Damned, the demoviewers have to suffer a crazy CROSSBOW-joke before the mindblasting routine is shown. He is talking about DREAMS! The morale of it: A worldfirst naked-chick-techtech in a cloud! Amazing! ; ) Then the real show begins: Vertical rasters the sequel! In the demo ICE CREAM CASTLE, a milestone in C64-demohistory, he did 8 (if I remember right) vertical bars in FLI a lot of people tried to copy but all failed caused by uglyness, I claim. This time CROSSBOW shows off with 7 small rasterbars, 3 big bars, all over a 40(!) chars wide vertical raster scrolling from right to left. KICKS! I love it! > 98% Graphic: As first there is only this small naked woman. Very, very small, but lovely painted. In the real part there is again no graphic. Just a nice usual font. After the part there is displayed a hand with the thumb up and letters showing THUMBS UP! The hand shapes were well done and the colourfadings are quite nice. This Koala-piece fulfills what it's meant for. > 69% Music.......: All this time I have been talking about DRAX and VIBRANTS and how MITCH +DANE sound so very much like them. That is not the case for the next tune. I don't know if I should keep comparing them to other composers as it makes it sound like they have no skills at all but copying other artists. Still I can't help at least mentioning that this tune has something very SHOOGOONish to it. Especially the instruments. But enough about that, I'll try to comment on this tune as if I'd never heard of SHOOGOON. :) It starts off slow, like in a kind of mysterious way. Gives you the feeling it's building up to something great but you just don't know what. Then it starts going a bit faster but it's not what I had been expected. Disappointing. But then it comes. What I had been waiting for. Take off! A great bassline and a cool rhythm. And guess what, it even has a melody that fits to it. Some funky breaks and great variations. Without doubt the best tune in this demo and most definitely the best tune in 1998. I believe I can listen to this tune for hours and hours... Totally addictive! > 90% THIRD PART - ------------ - Coding..: A zooming FLI-scroller is what AXIS contributed to the demo. The Y-zoom-tabs where precalculated. I think AXIS ranks high in the UNREADABLE-list with this part. Nevertheless it looks awesome! > 83% Graphic: Here we get presented a co-productions by DEEKAY, CUPID and FORBIDDEN CULT. The shapes are partly not that good, but still this OXYRON Koala logo is the best gfx in this demo! Maybe the bad shapes were caused by painting that piece live at the party... > 71% Music.......: It is still the same like in the second part. So no rating here. FINAL CONCLUSION: - ------------- - Coding..: Get your hands on this onefiler, it's worth the diskspace more than a lot! > 88% Graphic: Graphically seen this demo isn't that what we are used to from these two groups. But we must take into consideration that most (maybe even all!) graphics have been painted LIVE at the party! Personally I like that last OXYRON logo by DK/CPD/FCT most. > 62% Music.......: I must say that I enjoyed the whole soundtrack quite a lot. The second tune pulls down the average a bit, but overall the complete soundtrack scores an average of... > 75% Coding by GRAHAM +AXIS +CROSSBOW......: 88% Graphics by DEEKAY +CUPID +FORBIDDEN CULT: 62% Musics by MITCH +DANE.............................: 75% ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall...........................................: 75% ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ______________ (C) THE CREST 1998 - --------------- -
party event coverage
__ ___________________________________ __ PARTY EVENT COVERAGE -- ----------------------------------- -- Hello everyone this is ECSIC/DYTEC/ACSORE here with an exclusive party report from the MEKKA + SYMPOSIUM '98, which took place on the Eastern- weekend. As in 1997 also this year the organizers of MEKKA+ SYMPOSIUM-Party managed to realize this event for C64, Amiga and PC in Fallingbostel in northern Germany. I for myself got in the situation to go there, as in cause of HARDSEQUENCER's mother having a rather bad disease he decided to stay home and so I simply could take his seat in the car for the return journey. Not the best circumstance, but I just used this lastminute-opportunity. I also put up with the long way by train in incredible anticipation for the biggest german sceneparty. As I arrived in Fallingbostel I actually wasn't in the mood to deal with the exhausting way to the Heidmarkhalle where the party took place, but what was left for me? So I took my stuff and went to the partyplace. When I arrived there (with some help of a friendly PC-freak... Hi!) I firstly was incredibly overwhelmed by the impression that was offered to my eyes: sooo many guys! No! I guess at all there were 900 to 1000 visitors and I have to admit that because of this being my first BIG sceneparty. That was a deeply moving moment and I surely won't ban it out of my mind (like some people ban others on IRC... Hi MENDRAKE!) ! Now, I put my thoughts on the important matters and quickly payed the foolish entrance-fee of 50 DM and started my seeking for DODGER and FATMAN, because we had arranged to meet there and to be frank I had my problems to find them in this swarm at least at the beginning. But why should it be in another way, I found what I searched and even if I only knew DODGER from some telephone-calls, we recognized ourselves quite fast (...a yellow t-shirt and braces! Ts, ts, ts!) and from now on I wasn't alone anymore in the wide, wild and wicked partyworld of the computerscene! Well, at first I thought it just was a pure mistake by our beloved mother earth, that so many guy spent their time by playing QUAKE or PSX and by swapping some enchanting Triple X's, but as I had to see, they really were seriously willing to make the long journey and pay the entrance for thsi great delight. Hmm, quite admirable, I think. Really. But what should I, a real party-greenhorn, demand a lot from these overtired but nevertheless party-hungry visitors... That's not my right... Watch and learn was my motto. And so I also did with the ACCEPT and METALVOTZE guys when I saw how they came out. Envy and jealousy penetrated my body as I saw how fantastic the guys around FRIESE and SYNTAX enjoyed themselves! I tried to copy their partystyle but curiously didn't (in difference to them) find any satisfaction in running onto the stage and shouting "FICKEN!" all the time or going around the place very funny and simply to party! Either this was caused by much too less THC or alcohol in my blood or I am just not a party-lion; but that's life, some have the special thing and some not... It's sometimes also very surprising, which persons stands behind a handle. So it can surely happen that the cute, nice boy from the house in the neighbourhood transforms into an icecold meneater as quick as a flash! Really! But as we all know, the only reason for visiting such a party are the releases, and ONLY the releases and so I won't embezzle the warezyield of the SYMMEK '98. The first compo that was helt was the music- competition and I was astonished a lot when I saw which sceners developed into musicians in that short time. Not that bad when the scene gets new talents from time to time in thi section, if this pays or not... In my eyes, and I don't have any doubt, there were four our five tracks which sounded really nice, but the rest was quite low and so we had no other way (at this noiselevel) than that which lead out of the hall, but maybe we just missed the best ones right in that time. Could be... The next climax was the graphic-compo! Not only that RAYDEN spoiled us with a new pic made by CYCLONE, no, there was even more. Great artworks for sure, but it became a real problem to distinguish the real graphics from the fake-ones, so I felt a little bit unsure in my skin, but maybe I just was a little bit puzzled by the fact that this was my first gfx-compo on a big screen, that's possible. As last competition the demos appeared on the screen. HITMEN showed their new demo REANIM8ED for the demanding eyes of the visitors and also CASCADE, WILLOW and WOW impressed the whole partyplace with their new productions. Even the PC- and Amiga-guys nodded agreeing and respectfully at the sight of those real fireworks of style, art and code. But also PADUA wasn't sleeping and implemented the really funny idea to let the audience since a karaoke-like song (of course written by CUPID) during their demo and so YELLOW SUBMARINE from THE BEATLES became the C64-scene- hymn on the spot. Another nice one was produced with a fusion of CREST and OXYRON. The style and the code in this demo were really nice and kicked some butt, in my opinion. Props to OXY, CREST and PDA for keeping the level on a good standard!!! Thanks a lot! But there was one question for the competitors that still was left: How could you as a coder get the attention from the guys in front of the big screen after such a flood of quality?! Yeah, damn difficult, I have to admit, but AEG from SMASH DESIGNS got an inspiration or something else like this. The first part of his plan was to let two demos compete in the compo, but that's not all as you might guess. He also fascinated all the present people with stunning 4X4- pixel-code and as this wouldn't have brought him all the votes he needed he went on to the final blow: He asked his girlfriend (or fiance?) in the romantic end-upscroller if she feels like to marry him!! To the surprising of everyone she afterwards went onto the stage and sais YES! That is love! We tried to find out, if this all wasn't just directed by him, simply to catch all the remaining votes by the pure warmth of his heart, but seemingly this wasn't the case. So AEG, the whole THE CREST staff wishes you and your wife all the best for the future! May your marriage will last forever. And with these words I'm hardly at the end of this report, but I still want to use the last lines to say something about this party in general. At all the partyplace seemed relativly clean and also the toilets were in a good condition in relation to this nuch of people. Unfortunately the food was quite expensive, in my opinion, and so I was very lucky that I took some provisions to this party and I also could take some advantages out of these cute sausages (Bautzner Senf!) DODGER had brought with him. I'll thank you on the usual way... You know what I mean, Lars. ; ) Also the attempt to build up a quiet sleeping-tent was okay, because in this one there was really silence. But either we haven't realized this in that night or it just was the pure reality: It was damn fucking cold in there!! So we came to the conclusion to prefer a sleeping-place under the tables and yes, it was noisy... Another thing we recognized especially was that the sound-PA wasn't the very best and so we haven't had any interest to follow advises or the other crap that came out of the speakers introduced by this well-known Playstation-jingle after three or four times. Maybe we better wouldn't have placed that near to the speakers, but okay. The last point I have to take into consideration was the lame gfx-compo. I can't understand how some of these pics could be voted that high and others (e.g. the really nice pic from HOGAN/REFLEX!) were at so low places, really confusing a little bit. This also applies for the music-compo, but in that case I didn't care a lot. Some things possibly can't be understood or something... Well, what's left? At all the party was really cool and in view of the funny time we had there, we surely will be at MEKKA +SYMPOSIUM next year again. I hope you gained some impressions of this one, even of theyr were only with my personal point of view. ECSIC/DYTEC/ACSORE
