SKYHIGH spreading the New Player EXCLUSIVELY THE SPREADING OF A LEGENDARY TOOL THE SPREADING OF A LEGENDARY TOOL by: Torben Hansen / Vibrants - Camelot * Prologue * When I first heard that JCH would spread his editor- system I was under the impression that only the people who had got it directly from JCH possessed it. However after talking to some people on IRC I now know that there are quite a number of people, who actually did possess even the new players - I was quite shocked by this, but since it's spreaded now anyways, I see no reason to investigate WHO were the one(s) to break the trust they were given by JCH. *The Article* At this point in time where the discussion about the spreading of music-editors is at it's peak, I bring you what in many people's opinion is the most powerful musical tool on the c64. You MAY believe it - you are about to be the owner of the Vibrants New-Player System created by JCH over a period of some 8 years. I guess you've already reseted this mag and started the tools, that has given you wet dreams for years. But before you rush away, I think you should finish reading this article. Funny enough the spreading of the New-Player System hasn't got anything to do with the public demand for the spreading of the 'secret' music- editors. The decision was entirely made by JCH. The reason why he wanted to spread the whole thing was because he had come across a new c64-emulator for the PC, that also emulated the sound through the soundcard 'Gravis Ultrasound'. As JCH would spread the pack on the PC, only c64-owners with a PC and a X1541 cable would be able to get the pack. Therefore I decided to do the only decent thing - since I'm no arrogant highass - and spread the darn thing, and since I'm no megaswapper I thought that spreading it through this media would be the best thing to do. I chose Skyhigh, not because it's a Camelot mag, but because it a mag that a huge amount of people read. The package that I've now spreaded does not include all the files, that will be included in the package JCH will release on the PC. Besides the tools you've got now there will be all the source-code + instructions for the whole system. JCH decided to give the source free for any future opgrades... Don't abuse this opportunity! To finish off the upgrading matter, I would like to say that since the New-Players now is PD, future up- grades should also be PD. I know that Syndrom made a v20.g5, because the v20.g4 does have some bugs. Syndrom's v20.g5 featured improved vibrato, new filter handling, and some raster-decreasements. However the 'improved vibrato' couldn't be heard - the new filter-handling served no obvious use - and finally the raster-decreasements made the player click, so all in all it wasn't really an upgrade, but still a nice try, Matthias! As you may see for your- self I haven't included the v20.g5, but if the demand should be big enough I'll spread it. Just remember that if you upgrade the player, then look out for the version-numbers!! Otherwise it's going to be a mess. If you're looking for instructions you wont find any here nor on the disk. The reason why I haven't included any is rather simple: First of all I don't have any instructions anymore - and second: if I did I wouldn't have had the amount of time needed to type them in. Now that everybody's happy I wouldn't want to see any more rediculous articles saying that: "I don't have a decent editor - gimme one!!" - anyway, I think Mitch said the right words that needs to be said in his interview in the previous issue of this mag. To end this article off I have an outcry: if you possess the infamous JCH-DEPACKER tool made by Syndrom, I must urge you NOT to use it! Make your own instruments - it takes time to do it, but when you finally get to the point where people envy YOU for your instruments you will feel twice as proud as you would have been if you just ripped it all! I know that the tool was never spread, Matthias, but so was the OutRun digimusic from MON! (*hint*) Well, now I will leave you without further comments. Oh, I nearly forgot to say that Jeff's player is 99% finished and it's looks like it's going to be better than JCH's player.. I guess you still wont have a 'decent' player then - or do you ?? Torben Hansen / Vibrants * Camelot Internet fanatics can reach me at : XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX -------------------------------------------- Here follows the info-file Metal did to the tools. Actually it was done in note on the disk, but because of lack of diskspace I decided to put it here instead. Ok take it away Torben. -------------------------------------------- ------------- -- Welcome -- ------------- You are now the lucky owner of the: NEW-PLAYER MUSIC-SYSTEM NEW-PLAYER MUSIC-SYSTEM Made by JCH/VIBRANTS. It took some 8-9 years to make it what it is today - propably the best and most user-friendly music-editor around. This info-file will try to explain what kind of files you've got with this pack, and also some brief instruc tions on how to handle them. Ed3.03/d15/20.g4 This file is THE editor. When you run this file you will encounter a directory page where you can load/save all your work-files. The detailed info on the screen should be enough for you to find your way to the main-editor. The editor is born with the 20.g4 player which is the newest (some 3 years old!) and the player used by the members of VIBRANTS and those selected musi- cians who got it from JCH personally (not man left, I guess). As some of you might know a version of the editor (v2.53 or something) with a player 14.g1 was illegally spread by SCORTIA. To chose of you who got hold on that one, I can only say that the old keys do the same job in this version. Digied2.56/o1.d4 I think this file is a real surprise for all of you. You propably didn't expect a digi-editor, right? Well, the reason why you've never heard of it, is because it was never been put to use. It's merely a preview, which JCH did about the same time as the player 20.g1 (old version of the 20.g4 with bugs), therefore the editor is full of bugs, which can make it a real bitch to handle. Besides JCH, who has made a few tunes in it, I have tried it out but I've never had the temper to finish anything in it :( If you like bugs and annoying problems you should be in for a real treat with this one. I can inform you that samples are loaded from $8000- NP-pack v5.3/jch This is the tool that packs your huge work-files into normal sized musicfiles. This version of the packer is also the latest one, and it can pack tunes made in the players 10.g1 - 20.64 (20.q0). When you've packed the tune and want to save it to disk a text-line with credits ans a line with the file- name pops up. You don't have to call your files : '20. NAME /ID '. This format was made so that the DELUXE-DRIVER could identify the player version, name the tune and id the composer. Because the DE- LUXE-DRIVER is terribly outdated, it has no other purpose than to play the music. I haven't included the DELUXE-DRIVER, as you don't really need it. If you insist on having it, I'm sure at- least one of your friends have it. 19.g1/clean This is the player 19.g1 which has not been used very much. It's a low-quality player with a low use of ras- ter-time. Because the player was supposed to fit those time-sucking demoscreens JCH had to cut down on some things. The PULSE-TABLE is not used, and you can't have VIBRATO either. This makes it hard to do leads and the usual base-instruments, however some people have managed to do some quite astonishing things with it. 20.q0/clean This is the double/triple player based on the 20.g4 player. When you load this into the editor you'll get a doublespeed player as default. If you want to change to triple-speed you just load the mergefile : '+SPDC/VOL/TRIPLE' and vice versa with the '+SPDC/ VOL/DOUBLE'. Getting the earlier versions of the JCH New-Player system ... This is the list of the existing players for the system: 06.o1 - 08.o1 - 09.o1 - 10 .g1 - 11.g1 12.g1 - 13.g1 - 14 .g1 - 15.g3 - 17.g1 17.q0 - 18.g1 - 19 .g1 - 20.g4 - 20.q0 There exists a 20.g5, which SYNDROM made (without permission at the time). As far as I can recall the dif ference between 20.g4 and 20.g5 is that the SLIDE- TABLE is changed from precalced to realtime. You can not tell the difference, which is also why SYNDROM dropped it again. If you have that awful JCH-DEPACKER from SYNDROM, all you'll need is some music made in these players, but if the public demand for these players is huge enough I'll propably include them in the next issue of SKYHIGH MAGAZINE. General information Here's some more quick references for the editor: 'F1 ' Play from wrap-mark 'F2' Test your instruments 'F3' Play song 'F4' Stop playing 'F5' In/out of sequence number 'F6' Delete 'F7' Octave up 'F8' Octave down Ofcoz you'll need to know about a million things more to be able to do something constructive with it. I can not seem to locate my own instructions, so maybe I should write some quick ones .. Hmm, we'll see about that. Anyways, JCH will propably include instructions in his pack.
