R3L4X M4G4Z1N3* JANUARY 1997 edition (issue
# 19), the magazine for the generation with an eye for
the finer details in the CBM 64 scene, was brought to
you by PHUTURE (Software & Marketing), your fa-
vourite disk-magazine releasing game label.

All in all it was a quite busy period for the Relax Ma-
gazine, the staff got enlarged and new technologies
have been used to look out expectant for the new
year to come.
There have been changes in the staff, changes which
hopefully will be highly regarded in the upcoming is-
sues of these publication. New in the team is VIOLA-
TOR/Alpha Flight 1970, in this edition "just" mentioned
as co-editor but directly after the release the pro-
motion to a MAIN EDITOR will follow, taking care about
the overall organisation to cover a WIDER spectrum
of topics on the best possible level, the level you al-
ready use to know from the Relax Magazine.
Aswell new in the team are MACX/Chromance and
PEACEMAKER/Hitmen. Both are actually serving as
CORRESPONDANTS to cover the BOARD/INTERNET
territory more carefully, hopefully with ambitions to
become fulltime editors in a not too far distant.
With the Internet getting a more and more important
factor of today's scene society Relax Magazine has
been signing up THE DIGITAL DUNGEON as Internet
headquarter exactly one year ago, to be with THE
PULSE MAGAZINE and PROPAGANDA the first magazi-
nes ever in CBM 64 history organising their Internet
distrubtion with a FTP-site.
By reading this text the long awaited RELAX MAGA-
ZINE HOMEPAGE should be up in Norway/Europe,
maintained and programmed by Zapotek and RRR, of-
fering the latest editions as online version, a short
overview about the history of the Relax Magazine,
a download option which leads directly into Relax's di-
rectory at The Digital Dungeon, an online voter to
make your contributions to the upcoming board and
mails charts and a guestbook is already installed. As
the page is still under contruction and lots of old edi-
tion are not online yet lots of other surprises can be
expected, like from the disk magazine indepedent
chapters such as the CBM 64 SCENE E-MAIL DIREC-
TORY covering already about 480 addresses of past
and present sceners from all over the globe and a
MAGAZINE REVIEW covering all magazines and the
editions which were supplied by mail or e-mail to ei-
ther Zapotek or RRR. To make sure that not your
publications nor any single issue will be missing plea-
se make sure to provide them to any offical Relax
Magazine dealer, containing a remark to forward them
to the Internet division. Furthermore its possible to
request us uploading your latest editions to the In-
ternet, just mail us the latest editions. This will cause
you getting the review in the Internet aswell as your
production being available in the endless widths of
the cyberspace.

With 1996 being over now another year passed, a
year being full of expectations, unfortuantely more
a year what brought more disappointments compared
with the very few highlights seed by persons being
interested in keeping the scene alive on the highest
possible level, following the traditions left behind from
the founders and pioneers of the scene which made
this system and this scene becoming something SPE-
CIAL and MAGIC, the originality which could NOT been
copied until now on any other platform.
The in 1995 quite active and overhelming MAGASCENE
did a major step backwards, sad but true. With just a
SINGLE EXCEPTION no board magazine came out on a
regular level, what is for sure a great shame keeping
1995 in mind, a year when the term scene journalism
got redefined and presented on the best possible le-
vel. With THE PULSE disappearing things more and
more slowed down, nothing left of the spirit inspira-
ting the editors to upgrade their skills with an every
single edition released. Maybe some competitors have
already reached their highest possible level ages ago
or others simple do not have the time anymore, ne-
vertheless the competition during the board magazi-
nes is at a not detectable level.
The mail magazines, synonym for the more into demo
scene oriented publications, could celebrate the
"birth" of a new shooting star, surely it reflects the
lacking interest of the European computer users in
this system that this star got born and realised on a
remote continent mainly being known for its very own
NTSC system, the United States, and DRIVEN is the
name, being fully established and highly respected
this year, getting a market over here by recruiting
European co-editors and correspondents to cover
both, the NTSC and PAL demo scene, showing that
mail magazines can be done offering quality! But not
only positive things can be reported here. The mar-
ket leader and highly ranked mail magazine Skyhigh
has stopped its production, surely leaving a gap be-
hind in its sector. New mail magazines have been re-
leased, but actually none of them seems to have the
potentional to replace it.
The CRACKING SCENE has been decreasing year by
year, that is no secret anymore. This year has been
rather uninteresting releasewise as no really big
titles have been released anymore. With the few re-
maining productions left being released these days
the battle for points to compete in the releae charts
has been getting harder than expected, surely it'll
get more rough in 1997 with many distributors and
game productions stopping their effort to support
the CBM 64.
With AVANTGARDE a great competitor left the busi-
ness but no sign in seight of new, promising cracking
groups to bring some more competition in here. But
to be honest, in a decreasing game market what is
left to enter? It's up to you to define the answer.
The DEMO SCENE is aswell going more and more
down, and it's no secret anymore, too, what is based
on the lack of major and original releases. The top
demo crews reduced their activity level a lot, the
promising newcomers unfortunately waste their time
by copying the effects presented by the top groups,
a shame is that those copies are on a lower level,
what makes them rather useless for the bright public
expecting a bit more, following the "higher - bigger -
better" demand of the masses. Please read more
about it in the Demo Reviews chapter.
Positive is that groups like Crest, Triad and Wrath
Designs came up with releases after "sleeping" for a
while, a fact surely worth to be mentioned. The NEGA-
TIVE aspect is the re-mix phenomenon as it is known
from the Amiga. It's just another definition for coming
up with MULTIPLE releases of one and the same
source, like a 75% and later on 100% version or re-
cycling parts in different productions just to show
off with lots of releases. That's the way it goes on all
other platforms, too, so why should the ORIGINAL and
OLDEST scene make an expection here?
COMPANIES! What companies? A brilliant question! Are
there any SERIOUS companies left? Yes, there are,
but are they dealing with CBM 64 software? Time will
tell, we don't know the correct answer yet.
MAGNA MEDIA has closed the last resort, the alltime
time favourite 64'er magazine stopped its production
some weeks ago, a source for CBM 64 related hard-
and software information, courses and so on since
1984! What's left now? The programm disk is going to
be distributed with a PC magazine by now, surely a
hit into the face of the CBM 64 users left in Germany
and the neighbours in Austria and Switzerland.
People are always requesting new and better games,
but curiously no one is willing to buy those produc-
tions, and that is the problem. The authors are inte-
rested in atleast a small income after spending many
hours creating software for this machine, an income
which surely won't be as high as it could have been
some years ago, but seen from the commercial side,
who plans, creates and realised games at an accept-
able quality level for free, to support cracking
groups who can proudly boast around with so-called
BUDGET or FULLPRICE releases, these days? Which
author would not prefer to code low budget games
for programmdisks instead of selling 10 copies of his
so-called FULLPRICER bringing an income which does
not even covers the costs for the production? This
is what people should keep in mind.

Following the traditions of our Sylvester/New Year
editions we decided to honour these worthy persons,
groups and productions representing anything spe-
cial in the previous months, to show our respect to
those having brought atleast a bit of brilliancy in
these grey days.
Our selected candidates are:
1996 DEMO GROUP: CREST
----------------------
Crest has presented an impressive comeback demo
entitled "KRESTOLOGY", featuring coding, graphics
and soundtracks on the best possible leve seen in
1996, proving the alternative way of presenting pure
CBM 64 effects still magnetizes and keeps the au-
dience stunning.
1996 SINGLE CODER: CROSSBOW/CREST

Crossbow is the man to be named here. His referen-
ces for this selection were the demo "Krestology" as
well as the introduction of two completely new graphic
formats, namely SHIF and UFLI, three good reasons
to see Roland dominating 1996.
1996 CRACKING GROUP: ALPHA FLIGHT 1970
------------------------------------------------------------
Without any doubts 1996 has been a very success-
full year for the flighters. Many releases, overall
high quality releases and a regular presence at the
boards, all those factors have been taken in mind to
justify this selection.
1996 SINGLE CRACKER: MOONCHILD/HITMEN
------------------------------------------------------------
When it comes up to the single crackers it has been
the year of Moonchild. In the first half of 1996 he
manages it to keep Fairlight's flag in the winds, in the
second half he got active for Hitmen. He rises a lot in
the charts, his versions are on a high quality and his
cruncher applications belong to the best available on
the market. No doubt, a well deserved winner in 1996.
1996 GRAPHIC ARTIST: DEEKAY/CREST/ONSLAUGHT

1996 has been the year of Crest. In "Krestology"
Deekay has shown what is possible on this ancient
VIC, and the results have been highly appreciated so
there is no doubt that "Krestology" has ben the gra-
phical highlight of 1996.
1996 MUSIC COMPOSER: MITCH & DANE/CREST/HYPE

While most composers have followed the trend to
compose techno tracks it is nice to see this compo-
ser duo going a different way and presenting lots of
excellent non-techno tracks being used in the demo
"Krestology", in their very own music collection and
in various disk magazines. Thumbs up, Mitch & Dane!
1996 MAIL TRADER: EL BANDITOS/SUCCESS & TRC

VIOLATOR/ALPHA FLIGHT 1970

The decision has been quite HARD this year, as ALL
competitors got the same amount of votes we thought
the most fair solution is to name them all here, as all
have been the runner-ups this year, taking the mail
trader charts by storm and it's almost impossible to
judge who of them has been the best. Anyway it is
nice to see that the GUILD of mega swappers did NOT
die in 1996. Well done, guys!
1996 MAGAZINE: DRIVEN
--------------------
After the great year 1995 1996 has been a disap-
pointment when it came up to the magascene, never-
theless a new star has risen - Driven! Covering the
NTSC and PAL demo scene combined with a large
staff the American based publication has found many
readers all over the globe, so no doubt that this one
is the magazine of 1996.
1996 FIXING GROUP: HITMEN
-----------------------
This has been one of the more easy decisions! Hitmen
has been the address consulted when it came up to
fix games and the only group with all fixes running
at 100% without any complaints from the concurence.
Well done!
1996 SINGLE FIXER: JOLZ/ONSLAUGHT
------------------------------------------------------------
This selection was one of the more easy decisions to
be made here. Jolz has put lots of efforts in games
others defined as UNFIXABLE when they were not in-
terested in wasting time on them. He has shown that
almost every game can be fixed if you are willing to
do it and pleased the few Amercian based game col-
collectors left in the scene.
We think this was the most objective and fair election
possible, and we can't await to see who will be favou-
rites at the end of this year.

Furthermore voting is possible by using the voting
booths at our homepage and our boards, so there is
no excuse left for not participating while creating
our different chart types.

What happened in the last weeks of the year 1996?
The answer can be found in our GLOBAL REPORT. Is
there still any activity in the cracking/modem scene?
The RELEASE CHARTS and the YEARLY RELEASE
CHARTS is where you can look it up, the most objec-
tive sources you can find in the scene. Who is top and
who is not? The BOARD and MAIL CHARTS are the
chapters to be read. This time we unfortunately can't
present an interview chapter as both of our inter-
view partners could not return it in time, that's the
reason for the delay of the magazine. The DEMO RE-
VIEWS have a look at the productions spread infront
of The Party. Both PARTY RADAR chapters will pre-
sent the invitations of Siliconvention, Symposium and
the X-97 aswell as a report about The Party 6. Last

The seek for proven information has found its end as
you have finally found your favourite and most RELI-
ABLE HOST around the globe in this lonely universe.
Fantasy stories, expections or own opinions about
the latest happenings in the world we use to live in
can be found in several wrong places, this is the pla-

* ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 *

In the end of 1996 the flight had a rather strength
period releasewise, but on the other hand both US
headquarters went down. In 1997 the demo section is
going to present the first releases, so some activity
in that area should bring some nice releases, too.
The flight has got a lot of new members, mainly to
come closer to their aim presenting an acceptable
demo section. From the Polish Street Children two
members followed their comrades, this thime MAD
HATTER, a programmer, and WIZARD, a composer,
joined in as double members. Finally BALDHEAD
completed the demo section, aswell a Polish program-
mer. The warez distribution front got enlarged by
VIOLATOR who returned from his trip to Triad.
DUNGEON MASTER, who joined in as double member
after leaving Motiv 8, has become rather inactive be-
cause of personal problems, so get he got moved to
the the inactive list, a fate shared by another Ameri-
can, too, POL POT is his name. Due to a HD crash the
well reputated HOLIDAY INN CAMBODIA went down, as
soon as Pol Pot has got the money to replace the
defect harddisk it will go online again, a fate being
shared by the second Amercian sysop ANCIENT MARI-
NER, too, who has been set on the inactive list as long
as his board uses to be offline.
PERNET became inactive again after the work for his
new CD took more time than expected. To guarantee
an acceptable balance of the memberstatus the ra-
ther unactive MAX and THE HERETIC have been mo-
ved to the inactive list, needless to say that all will be
added to the active list again as soon as they show
any scene activities again.

Atleast in the board sector the Hungarian based
crew has set up a new standart these days, not to
declare it as a milestone, as their US headquarter
is now supposed to be the FASTEST BOARD in the
scene these days.
With MACX (mail trader) and ZAKK (programmer)
leaving Onslaught fresh blood got implanted. Unfor-
tunately right after joining forces Macx had to de-
crease the amount of his contacts down to 50. Ne-
vertheless at The Party 6 both, Macx and Zakk, have
joined the promising Danish based demo group No
Name.
ROUGH, their old German member, has been spotted
being full in effect again, proving his activity by re-
leasing certain cracks aswell as by calling out. He is
looking out for a NTSC to start a fixer career, too.
Boardwise there has been some action around the
Hungarians, too. EDGE OF MIDNIGHT booted Onslaught
to remain Chromance and Netphreakers headquarter
and became the FASTEST CBM 64 board, being run-
ned on a 20 MHz SUPER-CPU from CMD. The other US
board, BASS PLANET, is now going to be shared with
the Dutch based group Xenon. FINAL GENOCIDE, De-
viants board, has finally returned independent, its
number is ++X/XXX/XXX-XXXX.

At first the cooperation of Acrise & Excess splitted,
now even the future of Acrise doesn't look to bright
as the members left to built up a new group.
From the former Acrise crew MENDRAKE, GOTHIC,
BORDEAUX, GOAT and GIZMO are willing to establish
this name in the scene these days. They are getting
completed by MANAGEMENT, SKID ROW, TRISTAN and
ZORLAC, names which are aswell as ENDLESS PIRACY
quite familar to most of the older sceners still around
these. Due to the deadline we have not been able to
check if those persons are the original ones, but we
will keep you updated in our next editions. Last but
not least a certain PERFECTIONIST completes the
squad.

Autumn and winter 1996 have been some rather slow
months for the fantastics. Not only that the proudly
announced and promoted TRIBUTE '96 did not take
place, not even the from SIXX on the Internet an-
nounced WAREZ RUSH did take place. In 1997 things
can only get better.
Following the trend of the remaining active Avantgar-
de members DERBYSHIRE RAM followed his old comra-
des after a while to become a fantastics member, too.
STASI, graphic artist of the formerly high respected
Swedish demo group Noice, joined in to support the
fantastics' intro/design division. Back from the army
service to serve F4CG as mail trader is WALKER in
order to continue at the level he offered before he
was forced to take a break. This will lead to SIXX de-
creasing his trading actitivities and to focus on the
organisation.
OXSID PLANETARY is Zyron's new music label, a label
he already used to present his latest music collection
in late December 1996.
Due to the lack of activity during the last period in
1996 CUPID decided to leave in order to team up with
Hitmen and Padua to serve them as double member. In
the actual transmitted active memberstatus a lot of
names have being missing, probably moved to the in-
active status, these men are ARISTO, CYBERSURFER,
CYBORG, DEVIL, FEN 1, HAIN, KING, MORRIS, SCORPIE,
SNEAPER, TOTAL CHAOS and WORM, so it seems there
has been made a MAJOR clean-up to shorten the
formerly huge status.
Being online for just a few weeks their FTP-site SIX
FEET UNDER is down again. Nevertheless F4CG an-
nounced that the INTERPARK might be back up, again
maintained by PLAYBOY, this time not based on huge
archives but a system based on speed.

Hitmen could be described as a MODEL for a scene
group, having an active CRACKING, DEMO and FIXING
section, ALMOST covering all jobs to be made in the
scene today.
From Smash Designs and Netphreakers CHAOTIC has
joined in as triple member, declaring Hitmen to be his
first group. Leaving the fantastics CUPID joined in as
graphic artist, aswell teaming up with the reactivated
demo forces of Padua.
We truely excepted the decade is over, but still there
are some people around who love to destroy the hard
work of others by formatting boards, this time Pea-
cemaker's board THE MYSTICAL PARADISE has be-
come the victim. Fortunately no unrepairable damage
remained as the data could be restored.
CURLIN's CBM 64 days seem to be counted as he
concentrates mainly on PC and consoles these days,
for sure a big loss for the hitted men.

There exists a LONG TRADITION of CBM 64 related
music labels, starting with the Maniacs of Noise, Vi-
brants and The Imperium Arts just to name a few. Now
there is Hype, not a new group as no one else but the
CyberZound Productions members are standing be-
hind the new brand.
"This step was necessary to get away from TECHNO
IMAGE suggested by CyberZound," explained MITCH
on the IRC, "furthermore it is better for logos etc."

expand their activities from the CBM 64 aswell to the
PC, here MSK might join in to complete the team.

Since many months the motivated ones are building up
a competetive demo section, so more and more skilled
persons have been gathered within their rows, with a

enlarged again. ALG, a talented graphic aritst from
Poland, joined in, being introduced as double member
in Albion, but according to an Albion spokesman Alg
has never worn their colours. Nevertheless KOSA,
a coder and paper artist, got recruited and left his
former teams Tengu and TDM for the motivated ones.
VISBY from React will be serving as mail-trader in
the future by supporting the mail distribution.
DUNGEON MASTER decided to leave the forces and
joined Alpha Flight 1970, aswell as MISERY who has
left, his future plans are not known yet.
MOUNT OLYMPUS went offline at January 1st, 1997,
sysop BIRD will take care about the Internet and de-
cided to join WOW as double member.

Onslaught is the only group where we used to set the
news into quotation marks, since no news can be
found on the boards, not even on their own, nor did
we receive any concrete confirmation at direct re-
quests from our side. In case the facts should not be
100% accurate, we are NOT the ones to be blamed.
The Australian based group seems to have got some
new members, like MAYK/Aspect and a certain TBH.
Their most prominent new entry is ofcourse STING,
former member of Alpha Flight, Paramount, Genesis,
Madonna Cracking Group, Enigma and certain other
well reputated cracking groups from the past. He has
been spotted calling about and is said to be a part of
"The Luftwaffe", a trio consisting out of another new
member called GALLAND and Ramirez.
Some people decided to leave the forces of Ons-
laught as most of them did not know what is going on
this group these days, MACX and ZAKK both left for
Chromance and No Name, HARDSEQUENCER decided
to return to this former comrades in Dytec, WITTY is
turn to his former comrades in Dytec, WITTY is said
to have left the scene some time ago, QUASAR has
left them and his second group Ambush for Fraction.
Furthermore they got BOOTED from "EDGE OF MID-
NIGHT", what is no surprise as EOM belongs to the
leading boards around these days.

these release charts we want to introduce our very
own point system:

Budget Eames 4. 1 - 6.0 points

PD/Shareware 1.0 - 2.0 points
Previews 0.0 - 1.0 points
One bonus point can be gained by releasing a 100% (!)
working PAL/NTSC version. When a second group got
involved with the NTSC fix the points will be shared.
Games which were already PAL released have to be
fixed uithin 6 months after the official PAL release
otherwise no points will be given for the NTSC fix.

After the cooperation splitted Acrise came up with 2
previews called STARTREK (0.0 pts) and STARSHIP
(0.2 pts) just to re-released CRILLION (- 7 pts).

Germany's leading cracking group started its wares
rush with the fixed versions of ROCK RUN (3.0 pts),
the 100% working version of DORIS 2 (6.2 pts), the
official sales version of BALLZ (5.9 pts) aswell as
ALIOTH (5.5 pts), all BUDGET GAMES sold by the
Dutch software house EAGLEWARE. The rush conti-
nued with the PAL version of DAVE SPEED (4.0 pts),
a fine "Giana Sisters" clone published by Magna Me-
dia, followed by the preview of SPACE TRACKER (0.2
pts) from Nitros Developments. Next to games aswell
a tool has been released called BYTEBRUISER V1.0
(0.0 pts) just to come up with further games releases
like DESTINY (5.0 pts) again from Eagleware working
PAL/NTSC and the third preview version of COLONY
(0.6 pts). Last but not least they came up with the fi-
xed version of ARCADE CLASSIC (0.5 pts) from Mag-
na Media. Unfortunately this is NOT a 100% fix as some
graphics would have to changed, but keeping in mind
the work invested in this game by Dungeon Master it
is still worth a half of a point to let the few NTSC
game lovers having their fun (?) with the game, too.

The Hungarians started with the 100% working ver-
sion of UPSIDE DOWN, (4.2 pts). MINUS 0.5 points
must be given for a not translated Polish infofile. La-
ter on they released the preview of STAR FIGHTER
(0.7 pts) from Parade Software, followed by two com-
piled Basic text adventures entitled MARIO (0.0 pts)
and PSYCHO (0.0 pts).

The fantastics only fixed TIME OUT (1.0 pts) for La-
xity.

The German based group released the preview of

This group releases the fixed version of ACINNA

two years of development time the fixed version of

followed, a low bugdet game from the Bytebrother(s).

The Dutch cooperation began their warez rush with
the fixed version of CAR-O-MATIC (6.7 pts), 0.5 EX-
TRA points have been given for Burglar's REU-rou-
tine, unfortunately only benefitting REU users, so no
full point could have been given for something spe-
cial. More came up with MEGABRAIN (4.8 pts) and a
game called TERMINUS (3.2 pts), a MINUS one point as
a second version was necessary. Then came CELTIX
(2.6 pts), RATAN BALLADS (2.9 pts), both games
working PAL/NTSC and a COOL preview called RIGOR
(1.0 pts).

* THE OFFICIAL 1996 RELEASE CHARTS *

Feel welcomed to the chapter taking care about the
releases made in 1996, being filled with statistics
about the first release competition in 1996.
The following lines will contain the FINAL STANDINGS
of 1996. Needless to say that this is the only source
having covered the release charts an a regular le-
vel and basis. In the next issue we start over with
the charts for the year 1997.
Infact the idea behind this chapter is not that new
but it's definately very informative and helpful for all
persons who are interested in detailed information
about the releases in 1996 as it will contain game tit-
les, fixing or cooperating groups, the points and the
status (PAL: PAL only, PAL/NTSC: game was already
PAL/NTSC compatible and FIX: NTSC (PAL) fix in-
stalled).
This overview might be a useful documentation in or-
der to avoid re-releases, only to give a short exam-
ple. Furthermore it is the place to define your cur-
rent position, and ofcourse the position of the con-
curence who are all heading for the crown at the end
of 1996.

* THE BOARD CHARTS *

Welcome to your probably most favourite chapter,
the charts. The Relax is the only magazine so far
offering seperate board and mail charts in order to
show the charts from two different worlds in the be-
loved CBM 64 scene since modem traders do not have
the time or possibility to fill votesheets, otherwise
they would be called mail traders.
One of the most asked questions is what kind of votes
will be taken into consideration while counting these
charts. The answer is very simple. At first there are
voting booths on THE ESCAPADE in good old Europe
and on THE EVIL ISLAND in the United States of Ame-
rica. Furthermore it is possible to vote by sending
e-mail to Marc/Afl at an every elite board worldwide.
There exists the opportunity to vote via INTERNET,
too, by using our very own DIGITAL VOTESEEHT or
just by sending an e-mail containing your votes to
ZAPOTEK or RRR. Simple, isn't it?
These board charts are the fastest moving charts
due to the fact that there is no votesheet which tra-
vels weeks or months to reach its destination. All the
votes were made between the previous and this issue
so this is some kind of mirror of the activity of cer-
tain established and new groups.

This time the leading trio has been, as we use to know
from the last board charts MR. SEX and GRAHAM are
still leading, this time followed by CROSSBOW who
overtook QUISS.
The Hungarian coder PROFI 1 entered the charts at
a surprising sixth position, sending AXIS out of the
top ten race we all use to love.

No big surprises at the top, SUCCESS & THE RULING
COMPANY, ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 and HITMEN have
gained the most points this time.
Finally there is some detectable movement here in an
already dead business. LAXITY entered the charts
replacing Atlantis. From the alliance of Acrise & Ex-
cess only ACRISE collected enough votes to be still
present here, Excess said goodbye this time.

Something unbelievable happened here! JACK ALIEN
has left the top three! What's that? A bad joke? This
time IGNORANCE, BURGLAR and the runner-up MOON-
CHILD are the leading figures standing at the stairs.
At the end some people voted for DIDI, who entered
here for the very first time, replacing PLAYBOY who
is now not in the top ten anymore.

After always one year leading the charts PRI has
finally been caught by the techno man PVCF, SYN-
DROM follows at three, that is the top crew this time.
At the end we see with a smile in our face ZARDAX
entering the charts, a man providing the scene with
lots of great oldschool soundtracks, some could have
been heard in this magazine, replacing the maniac of
noise JEROEN TEL who hasn't been that kind of acti-
ve lately on this ancient 8-bit machine.

leading cracking group trio these days after AVANT-
GARDE died and moved down to seven.
FAIRLIGHT returned into the top ten, replacing the

PRI was still able to defend the top spot while PVCF is
getting closer and closer. Nevertheless the time has
come for PRI to come up with some new masterpieces.
At the end finally MITCH & DANE were able to enter
the charts after having released lots of brilliant
pieces. The new "dynamic duo" has replaced all-time
favourite JEROEN TEL, who is rumoured to produce
some CBM 64 music again.

Once again, here is the proof. This are THE FASTEST
MOVING CHARTS in the scene. VIOLATOR did a major
step forward and took over the charts by storm,
sending SPERMBIRD back to two, followed by another
runner-up, namely FUNXILLA.
We had three new entries this time, MACX, NEOTEC
and CALEDONIAN, who sent off SPLATTERHEAD, CA-
LYPSO and SHUZE. We already know in the next edi-
tion we can expect major changes, as usual.

Australia on the top! Atleast in the magazine charts
the Tasmanian based group Onslaught has met the
approvals of the readers worldwide. Nevertheless
top ranked magazines should release atleast more
than only one issue per year.
At the end DRIVEN qualified finally for a top ten, a
well deserved position after the hard work invested
by the editors, setting up the most issues of a single
magazine in 1996. Well done!

Demo Reviews
* DEMO REVIEWS *

The demo season was been finished with its final day
at The Party VI after two days have been cancelled,
the DEMOBIT '96 in Slovakia and THE TRIBUTE '96 in
Sweden.
The season is over, the results from The Party 1996
are known and the releases have been spread widely
so far, but what brought the season of 1996?
Surely the rarely seen highlights have been set by
the returning forces of CREST aswell as the stan-
dart Assembly winner BYTERAPERS, demos which
were generally nice to watch and introducing atleast
some new or a bit more original effects.
Wrath Designs, Padua and Grafitty returned aswell to
compete within the demo industry, and the presented
results have been very promising, especially Grafitty
who presented a demo which was DIFFERENT from the
others shown at The Party VI, and the fact that there
were no stupid 4X4 vectors effects shown is ano-
ther positive aspect of that production.
The ORIGINALITY is missing more and more, that is a
fact for sure, having a look at the demos from Coma,
Reflex, Resource and Smash Designs released at The
Party VI. The effects have surely been partly CLOSE
to technical PERFECTION, but they all were looking
very similar and even the presentation of the effects
in the same row followed. Taking out the musics and
the rarely shown artwork you can't exactly define
what effect belongs to what demo, and that's the way,
the WRONG way, scene goes since almost two years.
The development for this step has begun in the late
eighties and early nineties when people only started
to BREAK any record setted up. On the one hand the
system lives from it, from the COMEPTITION to other
platforms and to show what is still possible with 8-bit
but on the other hand the originality is missing, and
it has always been the ORIGINALITY giving the
productions a special touch helping us remembering
them, while those recording hunting effects are for-
getten when we got to see a faster and even bigger
version of it.
The usage of the 4X4, 8X4 and 8X8 chunky modes
has already lead us to a point where you almost need
someone to explain what is shown there, as effects
from the Amiga/PC using 256 or even more colours
in a high-resolution simple can't look the same on the
CBM 64, and the 4X4 modes doesn't even make them
looking better.
Nevertheless we already reached the point where we
can't hide behind the term "ORIGINAL" scene when we
are "only" able to COPY from the demo scenes on o-
ther platform, this is something people should start
thinking about. Once again the time has come to in-
vent something ourselves, since our very own talents
should be more than only re-producing effects and
copying what we have seen before.
"I had the feeling to watch demos on a PC, a lame PC"
said The Dark Judge/Focus, one of the few remaining
demo veterans. Grafitty and Crest have proven it is
still possible to create demos with "original" CBM 64
effects, demos which look different having their own
style, giving us the feeling it is still the same compu-
ter system we have bought and entered a long time
ago, bringing back sentimental feelings from an al-
ready forgotten decade of demo making, a period
when demo making was still an ART, and NOT an IN-
dustry. On channel # c-64 TDJ has already hinted
that Focus are working on a new production, a pure
CBM 64 production, and not only a COPY from what
we have seen four, six or eight months ago on other
platforms.
People are continously talking about DESIGN these
days, but what is design? Design, like most people use
to define it, is nothing else like COPYING the presen-
tation of Amiga or PC demos these days, there is
rarely seen an original design, a design for example
groups like Focus, Spirit or Offence, just to name a
few, have shown all over the years.
In 1997 we hope to see some productions showing
originality on a high technical level, giving us a bit of
the old CBM 64 style back, a style which made this
system so popular.
Let's hope the best and return to the present. We
have prepared two reviews this time, "FATALITY"
from Albion and "VIRTUAL DREAMS" from Lepsi Deve-
lopments.
Unfortunately our music professor has left for win-
ter vacations in the Czech Republic so he has been
out of order for us this time, so Fuben took over the
job, being qualified by an immense theoretical know-
ledge about music, too. As you might know next to co-
ding on CBM 64, Amiga and PC he uses to compose a
bit, too, so no need to argue is given here.
Here we go...
FATALITY/ALBION
------------------------------------------------------------
Albion is a Polish based demo group with a lot of ta-
lented members inside, the only problem is the acti-
tivity level which is unfortunately not very high.
Anyway, until now their MAJOR releases have been
optically very nice, so this group is for sure worth
to be regarded with great interest.
Fuben about the coding:
--------------------
This demo was entirely coded by STILGAR/ALBION.
The intro sequence contains the USUAL stuff: logo,
"presents", BIG fullsize logo (maybe 2-screens or
even bigger) which is scrolled in Hi-Res, followed by
the credits. Evenso the intro doesn't feature any-
thing special, but all is well POLISHED. Just the timing
between code and music might be better, as there are
some quite long periods without any action (i.e. after
the big scroller). The same goes for the logo-fade-in
in the next part.
The next part features a transforming filled vector
on a SQUARE of maybe 200x200 pixels or BIGGER
(4 colors/low-res). Even the SPEED of the routine
is O.K., I think I have seen better vectors yet (i.e. big
vectors in Radio Napalm/Reflex), considering the
fact that NO complex objects were used.
Then, after some text (while loading) and a Hi-Res-
bitmap picture, which by the way is faded in in a NICE
way (I like that fade!), an UGLY (at least in my eyes it
looks ugly) 8x8 rotzoomer comes up (with a palette
of 136 colors). This effect really looks weird. You can
NOT recognize the texture at all. Well, I think again I
have seen BETTER rotzoomers yet!
Then, finally, after an 'ALBION'-logo you get see the
final 'THE END'-logo.
Coming next is a simple 2x2 upscroller, followed by
an interlace-picture.
All in all, 'FATALITY' is a WELL designed demo. Evenso
there is definetely a lack of action and new routines.
The two real effects has already been seen in
several demos, even in better versions. So, my rating
can't be higher than 57% !
RRR about the graphics:
--------------------
All graphics in Fatality have been drawn by Jetan,
who is a member of Agony Design.
The visual entertainment starts with a FINE "Albion"
multicolour bitmap logo, followed by a two screens
wide "Fatality" hires singlecolour logo, which is simply
BRILLIANT! Next in the row there are the credit items
which are only average, presented in multicolour bit-
map format saying "code", "msx" and "gfx". The next
screen is divided into two graphic parts, both in mul-
ticolour bitmap format. On the left side there is a qui-
te COLOURFUL "Albion" logo, on the right side there
seem to be some graphic fx only, but if you have a
closer look on it and with a bit of fantasy you can
find some kind of "Alb" sign here. This one is followed
by a fullscreen picture showing a girl's face, a plug
and a plug-in, connected in the one or another way,
realised in singlecolour hires format. At the end the-
re is another "Albion" in the multicolour bitmap
format, its style is almost the same like seen at the
intro logo. Last but not least there is another multi-
colour bitmap format, saying "the end". The shown
style is interesting, in both, form and filling.
Having a look at all graphics you get the impression
that its again one of the Amiga-design-bite-me tries,
a good try indeed, very different from the normally
shown standart. The graphics are in generally well
drawn, some are upperclass. The rating, taking all
graphics into consideration, is at 78%.
Fuben about the music:
-------------------
The Fatality soundtrack is done by JETAN/AGONY.
That TECHNO tune features a lot of passages, which
FITS to the demo, as you can TIME your parts to the
SHORT passages. The basic structure of the tune is
not anything special. A changing bassline, a basedrum
and a lot of effects.
The SOUNDS of that track are in my opinion MORE
interesting than the rest. I like those effects as they
beware the track to get boring. Especially that base-
drum and bass-sound (that 'BAMMM') is quite INTE-
RESTING.
Now it's my job to give a rating to that track. I'm NOT
sure if I am the RIGHT one to give a rating to a pure
techno-tune as I personally DON'T LISTEN to that
kind of music. But comparing the track with other
techno-tracks I have heard on C64 I would give this
a rating of 63% !
VIRTUAL DREAMS/LEPSI DEVELOPMENTS

Lepsi Developments have been a steady guest in our
demo reviews chapters in 1996, so we could not end
it without a Lepsi release. Atleast we can report that
the Polish based demo group increases their skill and
quality level with an every single release, anyway
they still "only" belong to the average COPYING in-
stead of INVENTING crowd "flooding" the market from
time to time.
Fuben about the coding:
--------------------
This productions got completely coded by Madrom.
The trackmo starts with the usual boring intro-
sequence, which is made up by some text (2x2 chars),
a logo and a weird plot-effect (looks like a bugging
Sierpinski-fractal), which is EORed to a Hi-Res
bitmap in the background. A poor intro actually!
The music changes and the real trackmo starts up
with some text (2x2) while IRQ-loading. The first
routine is a filled vector in the 4x4 mode! The object
has 8 faces and is quite fast rotating. But regarding
to its SMALL size and the chunky-like 4x4 mode, that
routine isn't that fast!
The next effect is a textured cube in 4x4 mode again,
which is rotating just around the Y-axis. In my eyes
the routine is quite SLOW, considering the fact, that
it is just rotating around ONE AXIS. Compare that
routine to GRAHAM's texture-mapper in DAWNFALL!
The next part is actually the SAME routine again but
now including LIGHT-SOURCED faces plus TEXTURE-
MAPPING. Additionally there is a background added,
too! This part looks really nice (I like the textures
very much)! Evenso, Madrom properbly just precal-
culated some textures for the light-sourcing, which
makes the cube looking much cooler, the routine is
still TOO SLOW! By the way, there is a point of view
added in both parts!
The music changes again. Now a quite slow ZOOMER
(in 4x4) comes up in a size of maybe 24x24 chars.
Another zoomer follows. This one has a size of 30x20
chars (in 4x4 mode again) and the speed is of this
routine is O.K. There is a X-sine included additionally!
After a Super Hi-Res picture has been shown and
a new music has begun, some FRACTALS with around
7000 pixels comes up.
After an FLI-picture, a small LIGHT-SOURCED vector
comes (in 4x4 mode). The CLIPPING bugs a bit and all
in all: IT LOOKS UGLY!
Then there is a textured GLOBE, something like TTS'
routine in Coma Light 12, but definetely NOT in that
speed. TTS' routine is by far MUCH better!
Finally there is the end-part showing an upscroller,
which is far too long, and an end-picture!
All in all, I think that this is the BEST Lepsi demo as
far I can remember. Madrom improved a lot in my eyes.
But I think that the GENERAL PROBLEM of all Lepsi
demos are the fact that they EXTEND their demo too
much. If Madrom WOULDN'T include that many text and
pictures between the parts and cut out the slow and
old routines, he could IMPROVE his demo a lot in my
opinion. If he just would take his light-sourced tex-
ture-mapper, his new zoomer and those fractals, he
could have much more ACTION in the demo. Well, that is
my point of view. So I give a rating of 53%!
RRR about the graphics:
--------------------
The graphics for the trackmo entitled Virtual Dreams
have been drawn and realised by Levi, Sebaloz and
Valsary. The 4x4 zoomed graphics being used as
textures for certain occasions won't be mentioned in
the following lines.
The dream begins with an interesting mulitcolour bit-
map logo saying "Lepsi Developments", followed by an
AVERAGE hires singlecolour "Virtual Dreams" logo.
Super Hires graphics can be seen rarely, here we
have on showing a man, probably a diver because of
his mask? I don't know. Keeping all the disadvantes of
this format in mind it's quite OK. Last but not least
there is a FLI picture showing a pickup VAN, descri-
bed MAZDA. The pickup itself is quite good and detai-
led, unfortuantely the background is rather boring
and SPOILS the impression a little bit.
Well, I personally would love to see more graphics in
today's demos/trackmos, so if only few graphics are
being used I demand some better ones. Nothing shown
here could impress me, it's more at an average level,
so the rating can only be at 57%.
Fuben about the music:
-------------------
The soundtrack for this trackmo has been arranged
by Froyd and Gregfeel, both members of this crew.
Gregfeel's intro tune sounds to be quite OLD. The
sounds - especially the bass and the arpeggio - are
quit miserable and so is the music, too! A simple bass-
line, which is transposed with some simple harmonies.
The second tune, which is composed by Froyd, is a
REAL CONTRAST to the first tune. The tune has very
cool sounds, which are quite similar to the JCH-
sounds. The music at whole has th e typical LINK
style in my eyes! A nice FUNKY lead, a simple GROOVE
in the bass and some soft arpeggios.
The third tune is by Froyd, too! It's quite SIMILAR to
the tune before. I like it, as it's rather funky. The
BEAT is not the usual 4/4 beat, but something like
15/16! I'm not sure if this is a bug from the editor or
Froyd wanted to have a more funky beat?!
By the way, BOTH tunes are looped and are repeated
during the demo.
The fourth track is kind of 'LAME' Snap-remix by
Gregfeel. There is a mega-lame bassline and a really
POOR melody. Evenso, the sounds are quite COOL
except of the arpeggio.
The end-track is Gregfeel's very BEST tune I think!
The tune at whole is rather simple, so that makes the
music a bit boring. The tune is quite similar to the C64
music done in the 90'er. The sounds are ok, expect
of the weird drum sounds.
I like Froyd's tunes a lot. They are quite funky and
are rather similar to the Vibrants-style. Gregfeel
has to improve a lot in my eyes. He should try to take
some new harmonies. He lacks at the THEORETICAL
part of music. I would prefer to rate both musicians
seperately, because of the IMMENSE potential diffe-
rences. But together I can just give a rating of 40%.
In the next edition we are going to have a look at
some THE PARTY VI releases as well as at some AC-
TUAL releases in case there should be some.

Nearly one year ago two great parties took place:
* Mekka '96 (29th to 31st of March):
Mekka was held the first time in 1996 and was a
great success. Over 300 attenders from different
countries joined the event. Before Mekka, there
was no real party for the German PC demo scene
in our country.
* Symposium '96 (5th to 8th of April):
Symposium took place the 9th time and about 650
attenders from all over Europe came to be part of
this special event. The multi-platform party got a
good reputation cause it is a scene party organi-
sed by scene people.
At eastern 1997 these both parties will be combined -
not competing like last year - to provide you even
more fun, entertainment and partyfeeling. It does not
matter what kind of computers you like - we will sup-
port all platforms and most of them will be represen-
tated by well known and famous demo groups for sure

This time Symposium/Mekka '97 will be an event not to

Only 15 entries will be presented. The preselection
will be done by a jury of known scene people.
* Anonymous competition means that the entry must

* The entry must be released at the party - not at
any time before and not on other parties taking
place at the same time (we will exchange us with the
organisers of all other parties).
* You must release a "FINAL" version of your pro-
ductions at the party.
* You have to license us to put your productions on
any digital media.
* The entry must be one archive with description
(FILE-ID.DIZ). The name of the archive MUST be com
patible with ISO 9660: only the charcters "a" - "z"

After the success of two previous parties, X-95 and
X-96 SCS & TRC are back with something even BIG-
GER and BETTER than before! If you attended both
parties then you wouldn't wann miss out on this one
for sure!
2. Information
-----------
X-97 TAKEOVER will be held on 4, 5 and 6 April 1997.
The party place will open on Firday evening and will
close on Sunday afternoon. The party will be held in
Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in the AUDITORIUM of the
Technical University. Eindhoven is in the south of the
Netherlands and can easily be reached from France,
Belgium and Germany.
3. Party Features
---------------
The party will feature not only a hiuge big screen
capable of true color in any resolution up to 1280X
1024 combined with an equally huge audio system
(enough to blow up your ears), but also a party net-
work, free Internet access and live music perfor-
mances. Needless to say there are a number of
competitions, including some never featured at a
party before.
The main hall is large enough to house over 500 par-
ty people and features in-house buffet and 24 hour
coffee services.

SCS & TRC and NOSTALGIA
THE PARTY 1996
--------------
The Party in Denmark became already an institution,
not to say a place of pilgrimage for all those compu-
ter disciples from various computer systems, a nice
gathering to waste those boring days between
christmas and new year in order to team with friends
and comrades and to have some fun.
Location
-------
This year THE PARTY was held in the MASSECENTER
of Aars, which is located in the north of Denmark,
of Aars, a small town being located in the northern
part of Denmark near the city Aalborg.
The partyplace was divided into three halls. This was
NOT well planned because when all the different com-
petitions took place ALMOST ALL interested persons
gathered in ONE HALL ONLY to follow them on the big
screen.
Originally the organisers planned to open only TWO
halls for the party, offering room for around 2500
visitors, keeping the third hall as sleeping room, but
after much more people have shown up to party on
the third hall had to be opened as party hall, too. A
good substitution has been found as people who did
not want to sleep under the table could enter a local
school where they could sleep and take a shower,
during some hours a swimming pool has been made
available for the party guests, too, in order to keep
the air in the halls atleast a bit breathable.
Audience
-------
According to one of the organisers, to be more pre-
cise this information has been given by the for the
CBM 64 part responsible HEAVYHEAD/CHROMANCE/
NETPHREAKERS, around 3.500 people from all over
Europe have shown up, covering all computer plat-
forms.
Around 300 of them, plus or minus 50 persons, were
CBM 64 related. The exact amount can't be defined as
some have entered as users of other systems.
Trends
-----
The CBM 64 competitions have found great interest
this time and seemed to be a bit more respected com-
pared with the previous years, years in what the CBM
64 has been almost completely ignored.
It seems to be quite fashionable for quite known or
even well known groups considering about building up
CBM 64 divisions after recognizing that the original
scene is still quite active, not that active as in former
days but still not dead. It is no secret that nothing
can beat the ORIGINAL scene, the concept all other
scenes have copied over the years.
Public stunts
----------
Like at The Party 5 the ACCEPT crew together with
some ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 members has shown lots of
BIZARRE and PERVERT porno movies, even more sick
and dirty compared with the movies shown before, it
is just unbelievable what people can find on stuff like
this.
The Swedish based HACK'N TRADE formation presen-
ted an excellent outfit, being dressed with Manches-
ter clothes and more in a sixties or seventies style,
sucking on toothbrushes and pacifiers (comforters),
those gummi things usually babies get into their mouth
to avoid them crying.
The blokes around Laxity have put a huge logo over
their tables to help those few ones looking out for
them. Other groups did aswell many things to get at-
tention.
Competitions
----------
After all the years of decay the CBM 64 competitions
have had some kind of unexpected comeback this
year, again with ALL competitions, namely DEMO, GRA-
PHIC and MUSIC COMPETITION being presented on the
big screen, using the offical THE PARTY equipment to
be presented to the entire audience, unlike in the
past few years when the CBM 64 communicty had to
organise its own inofficial competitions to be presen-
ted to just a few interested CBM 64 scene fanatics.
Our respect goes out to HEAVYHEAD for getting
back the CBM 64 into the spotlight for all party visi-
tors. He already promised to take care about the or-
ganisation again, in case there should be a similar
event in 1997.
This time 15 demos have been presented, 15 graphics
have been shown and 20 SID "modules" have been
played in order to prove what today's scene coders,
graphic artists and music composers are capable to
do. SIDs have already found its audience on other
systems all over the years,as almost all player-tools
support the PlaySID format.
The demos have been again very Amiga/PC orientated
and have represented the power of the CBM 64, un-
fortunately not its original style and feeling. REFLEX
has won the competition, this time without their front-
man QUISS who has been the main factor for this
group getting quite known and popular in the CBM 64
demo world. Many people said it was their 128 colours
holding ANIMATION of a snowboarder which especially
attracted the voters from other systems, sending
SMASH DESIGNS back to two, a group having announ-
ced their contribution to be the BEST CBM 64 EVER
in history. Well, taste is different.

There are still some things left worth to be mentioned
such as the fifth and seventh at the Amiga demo com-
petition have been fake labels by Oxyron.
More funny to hear is perhaps that the PC demo com-
petition winner has been an Amiga veteran and for-
mer member of Sanity, CHAOS is his name. This pro-
duction was his first PC demo production, just coded
for fun to show the PC what real coding means. While
receiving the prize during the awards ceremony we
heard the winners shouting a loud "PC SUCKS!" into
the microphone. That's the way it is!
Summary
-------
This years' party also worn the name "The End Of An
Era" as it is quite uncertain until now if next year a-
nother "The Party" as we used to know it will fol-
lowe in the tradition of "The Party" series.
The ORIGINAL organisers seem finally to have lost the
interest in organising a huge party like this series.
Perhaps many people might now be able to under-
stand how much work it is to arrange an event like
this, and what seems to be more important, how much
time has to be invested, and that is a factor most
grown up sceners don't own anymore as there are
other, more important things to do.
Nevertheless there are indeed many groups inte-
rested in taking over the organisation in the future,
so there is still some hope for a similar event this
year, too.
Regardless from the fact if there will be another
"The Party" or not, there is no excute for nothing
meeting your scene friends and group pals at cer-
tain other parties, too, as it is NOT important where
you meet, it is important THAT you meet them, in or-
der to have FUN and a great time. There is absolutely
no reason for a gathering like this just to play these
boring DOOM or QUAKE games on the PC, this is
something people could do at home, too, it is the meet-
ing point for a specified race of people, the computer
fanatics. Parties should have a social aspect, mainly
communcation and fun should be the keywords, or is
your only interest the competitions, prize money and
getting famous? This is a hobby, a nice hobby what
should bring FUN, not a job where your only need of
existance is to prove you and your skills all day and
night long. Remember to keep that in mind.
