the '91 christmas season opened with
 quite a few films, sorry, i couldn't
get to them all...but they'll be at
the video rentals before we know it!

hook - directed by steven spielberg

peter pan(robin williams) grows up and
has kids of his own. his old nemesis,
 captain hook(dustin hoffman) has taken
 them through their dreams. tinkerbell,
(julia roberts) comes to inform peter
 of the deed. [+]
the lost boys come, paint upon peter
to put him in that child-like state &
 back to neverneverland we go...
some excellent effects, a lot of quick
quips from williams as well as hoffman
to make this an enjoyable show. see it
 if at all possible...

 see ya later, alligator! rating-80%

rush - directed by lili fini zanuck

no, this is not a documentary about
the canadian rock group! far from it!!
we have an undercover cop that is into
drug busts and samples a lot... [+]
jason patrick plays jim raynor and his
 partner(jennifer jason leigh) is
kristen cates. she is assigned to jim
to help him get closer to the center
of a drug ring, headed up by noneother
 than greg allman(yes, chers' ex.....)
jim shows her the ropes, of which she
is appalled by the thought of, but he
makes her see that it's either do 'em
or get wasted by the dealer. even so,
they never seem to be above suspicion.
gee, i wonder why... anyway, the two
 become lovers/partners. both see what
the drugs do them, but have no answer
as to how to get out of it, without
 blowing it all. good counterpoints
throughout the film. the music [+]
is great, as the movie is set in the
seventies. eric clapton has a few cuts
 in that really are great!
another film well worth the chips to
see, especially for the ending. it's
been a long, long time since i've seen
 this take place...

people under the stairs - wes craven

my expectations were great of the man
that gave us "nightmare on elm street"
you can imagine my surprise at the big
farce that i managed to sit through...
none of the superb effects here [+]
in this movie. a few good make-up
shots, but not one good scare in the
damn thing! a black family is going
to be evicted unless they can come up
with triple their rent. one of the
buds of the family comes up with the
idea of ripping off the landlord, and
at his own house, to boot! nay, nay,
not an easy task. once inside they do
find more than a coin collection! so,
what do you do against a woman that is
the extreme wicked witch of the west
and a man that looks like an edward
scissorhand reject?? you run like hell
through the house, find all the hidden
panels and the "people" scattered in
the various parts of the house. [+]
the couple are not married, but sister
and brother(but she calls him daddy?)
the people in the basement are babies
they tried to raise, but as they grew
their mouths got them in trouble; ergo
 they lost their tounges...
yawn, huh? oh, back to the film, the
coin collection is found, along with a
lot, and i do mean a lot!!! of paper
money. too bad it's going to be blown
up due to "daddy" booby-trapping the
place trieing to catch one of the boys
that had escaped... you can imagine a
funky ending sequence with money in
the air and being grabbed by all...

see it once if ya must. rating -10[+]
as an added attraction and a plug for
a worthwhile group, an audio review!

polarshift - a benefit for antarctica

featuring music by vangelis * yanni *
chris spheeris * paul voudouris * jim
chappell * enya * steve howe * kitaro
constance demby * paul sutin * john
 tesh * suzanne ciani

this is a concept cd, with the tunes
made expressly for the saving of
 antarctica. the music is considered
"new age" and very melodic. the cover
shows a glacier with some very small
critters or people on it. [+]
a nice four page synopsis for the
purpose of the album is enclosed. the
reading is easy and gives some very
 interesting thoughts about the 5th
 largest continent of the world...

a portion of the price will go to the
earthsea institute, inc. which is also
 associated with the cousteau society,
 greenpeace, world wildlife fund and
 the antarctica project...

"may this continent, the last explored
by humankind, be the first one to be
 spared by humankind." j-y. cousteau
