COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR PREFACE
--------------------------------------------------------------

HO, HO, HO... Merry Christmas Everyone!

It is not even Christmas yet, and already the first gift is
presented to you. Life is superb, right? Another brand new
edition of THE PULSE MAGAZINE - the December edition!

Although Christmas is around the corner, I think most of us
are busy with thinking nostalgic thoughts about the year of
1995. Meanwhile we are looking towards the year of 1996 with
utter speculation, what will it bring us? Will the C64 survive
another year of competition from the obvious superior
computers?

The answer is YES! Why? Because the Commodore 64 does not
serve our technological needs - it has not done this for many
years. It does not give us incredible art and top of the class
games, at least not as concentrated as what is available on
the Amiga and PC for all of us. But what does it give us then?

FUN! Good clean fun, with a "playable" scene - one we can all
be a part of, and shape into what we feel is heaven of
computers. And heaven is easily comparable with the scene on
the C64. The C64 scene has grown into one huge family, one
that educates respect and friendship - a family in which we all
abide by the unwritten laws, showing our respect for the
forefathers of our family, and the ground that holds the family
together and structured.

We all play an important part in the overall picture of the
scene - and we know this, and enjoy the responsibility. We
feel we have been part of creating something great, while
others have been part in inheriting the work of others - and
they continue their ambition with honour. Together we
represent the C64 scene, and it is far more powerful than
what you can find on other systems.

Therefore, hold you head up high, and speak of your
membership with the C64 with great pride. As previously
stated, being part of the C64 scene is not a status - it is an
attitude. We have succeeded in creating a solid base for
computing, one that is unique, in fact so unique it may never
be repeated again. This is a true achievement, and because of
this, we are the superior family within computing.

The PC and the Amiga are JUST computers. The C64 has a
SCENE, CULTURE, ATTITUDE, FRIENDSHIP and HISTORY!

Merry Christmas my fellow sceners, I hope to see you all at
THE PARTY 1995!

THE PULSE MAGAZINE is a complete C64 scene based

is of their own seperate opinion, but feel free to express that
opinion without having to express the overall opinion of THE
PULSE MAGAZINE.

Thanks must go to those that helped us in the making of this

+ NEWS JOURNAL - MONTHLY SCENE REPORT +
--------------------------------------------------------------

We bring you another exclusive update of the current scene
situation, as it looks in the eyes of the News Journal
reporters. Join us every month, for an inside look at the news
with competent views.

In order for us to present the most correct and complete news
report we need the help of our readers. If you have any
interesting things to report upon, let us know by contacting
any of the staff members mentioned below. You can get a hold
of us by using any of the addresses or numbers listed in
PREFACE.

NEWS JOURNAL is as always anchored by DUKE, assisted in
the news gathering by CROSSFIRE and MR.WAX.
ALPHA FLIGHT (GER, HOL, POL, USA)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The German Flight were able to report the return of SKINHEAD
to a more active state. At least so they seemed to hope, as he
was excused from his army duties. He will be doing civil
service jobs in the coming months to make up for the army
duties, but it should award him with more space for scene
activities.

Meanwhile the popular musician, ARNE, decided to leave the
scene for a while. Apparently he wanted to concentrate more
on his job, and his involvement in a real-life band.

The final words to reach us from ALPHA FLIGHT, was the
notice, that MURPHY left ALPHA FLIGHT and the scene.
Apparently this happened following the signing of THE
MERCENARY last month.

AVANTGARDE (GER, USA, ENG, SWI, POL, DEN, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

A slow month for AVANTGARDE, leading hopefully into a busy
Christmas month. The popular trader, INTRUDER, decided to
stop swapping with his German contacts. He made a short
visit on the Internet, but it proved to be just a "one night
stand" - and he returned to his mail-trading scene activities.

CHROMANCE (GER, HUN, SWE, USA, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

By the looks of it, CHROMANCE also decided to go through a
month of very few changes. But they did manage to sign a
brand new member, LOTUS/SKYLIGHT DESIGN, a former
scener from Poland. He joined up with CHROMANCE as a
swapper and graphician.

F4CG (BEL, ITA, USA, GER, POL, AUS, SWE, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Fantastic Four Cracking Group bid farewell to a couple of
members, beginning with the Australian NTSC fixer, CEREBUS,
who decided to follow the footsteps of the former F4CG
member, GOZ, and left the scene to concentrate more on his
school career. Meanwhile, STABLIZER was removed from the
ranks of F4CG shortly after joining. According to F4CG, the
American NTSC fixer, STABLIZER, did not live up to the
expectations when having signed for the group. Due to this, he
was kicked, and is now active for his own group, LONGSHOT.

MOTIV 8 (DEN, GER, USA, NOR, HOL)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The most active group, in terms of group modifications,
leading up to Christmas is without a doubt MOTIV 8. They
started their campaign by signing on TMG of FATUM, a
musician and graphician.

As an extension of the newly found Polish section of MOTIV 8,
the Polish trader, SPIDER, decided to leave ALPHA FLIGHT to
join up with the Danish based group. In addition, the Polish
graphician and musician, MHD/FENIKS, joined up with the
side to boost their hopes of controlling the Polish scene.

Meanwhile, the Swedish trader, THE FRESH PRINCE,
announced his decision to return to the scene in a couple of
months. When the return is successful, he will be signing with
his former group, MOTIV 8.
MOTIV 8 (DEN, GER, USA, NOR, HOL)
--------------------------------------------------------------

In an attempt to make room for the latest signing of members,
MOTIV 8 decided to remove certain members from the
memberstatus. According to MOTIV 8, these members were
not kicked, but will simply not figure in the status till they
return to an active state.

ONSLAUGHT (AUS, DEN, GER, HUN, TUR, USA, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

ONSLAUGHT seems to be taking it with ease at the moment,
trying to rid themselves of criticism, that they should be too
unstable with their memberstatus. This appears to be
successful, as the group looks to be more solid at the
moment. Returning to former news, following last months
signings of the Turkish Accuracy members, MR.BRAIN, SHARP
and DIGAHOLE, the remainders of ACCURACY left to see the
group die.

What will happen to their popular magazine, SPLASH, is still
uncertain. But with VANDALISM NEWS dominating in the ranks
of ONSLAUGHT, we predict SPLASH to be put on an indefinite
hold.

Meanwhile, MEFF, a Polish coder and graphician, joined up
with ONSLAUGHT to lead their Polish division.

SCS*TRC (HOL, GER, POL, USA, UK, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

A rumour appear to have been spreading, that the popular
member, SPLATTERHEAD, should have joined up with SAMAR.
But according to several people - among himself, this is not
true. He will be staying with the co-operation, and has no
plans to leave the side. The only member to sign up with the
co-operation this time, was the Hungarian original supplier -
STAKE of ONSLAUGHT.

Meanwhile, the popular Internet site, THE DIGITAL
UNDERGROUND, moved to a new address. It can now be
reached at the address stated in the SCS*TRC data's.

They will follow on the next page!

WORLDWIDE NEWS NEWS JOURNAL
--------------------------------------------------------------

* A bit of sad news, although still not totally confirmed, tells
a terrible tale of misfortune for the scene - and one young
person. The legendary cracker and former member of
AVANTGARDE and SCS*TRC, STEVE, should have been killed
in a car accident in early November. According to one of his
friends, IRONFIST, STEVE was always accident prone with
vehicles - and if this story checks out, it should be his very
last accident.

* According to RELAX MAGAZINE, the former member of RSI
and editor of THE PULSE MAGAZINE, PSYCHOBILLY, was
arrested for selling drugs apparently up to 37 kg. The German
police should have had an eye on him for a while, and now he
can look forward to approx. 5 years in jail. In the same
investigation, other sceners may be visited in the future. At
least those who were buying drugs from PSYCHOBILLY!
WORLDWIDE NEWS NEWS JOURNAL
--------------------------------------------------------------

* The Swedish board operating for FAIRLIGHT, WARES
AQUARIUM will now also be occupied by the Germans in
HITMEN. The sysop, SLEDGE, will remain a member of
FAIRLIGHT though. Meanwhile, HITMEN decided to join up on
the new popular wave, and signed on a Polish original supplier,
MOBY!

* RAMIREZ decided to leave HARDCORE, and the scene, due
to not being happy with the C64!

* A bew group is formed by ANGELDUST of LAXITY. The name
is U-TURN. They currently focus on mail cracking, but a
magazine and a possible demo is within reach. The current
memberstatus of U-TURN goes as follows : ANGELDUST,
MEGABRAIN, DR.DOOM, TRIPPE-H, CAVEMAN, FLASHLIGHT
and FUNXILLA.
WORLDWIDE NEWS NEWS JOURNAL
--------------------------------------------------------------

* CAT/EXCESS joined up with ACRISE. He remains in EXCESS
as his first group. OUTLAW and FLI, both former members of
EXCESS, also decided to team up with ACRISE.

* According to Dutch sceners, the telephone numbers in
Holland should have changed. All numbers are now represented
by a 10 digit number, therefore everyone with contacts in
Holland should get a hold of the new numbers - at least before
the 10th of April 1996, which is the final date for the old
numbers.

* DIDI/LAXITY left his second group, ATLANTIS, due to
having time problems. He remains a member of LAXITY though.

MONTHLY RELEASES NOVEMBER EDITION
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome once again my friends into a journey of the First
Release scene, brought to you by JAZZCAT of ONSLAUGHT!

As your usual specialist in THE LIST, I bring the complete
details in chart form of the major C64 cracking groups of
today's scene.

An examination is made on first releases through the
month of October. All releases are gathered from the major
USA C64 boards and tested 100% on NTSC and PAL computers.

My observations and evaluation is final, any unlikely errors
will be rectified in the following issue.

A November rain is falling..
ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 (GER, USA, HOL, POL) Points (9.6)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The strong force of this German based group provided the
scene with the usual consistant amount of wares. Firstly
they released COLONIAL TRADER 100% (4.7) which was a 100%
version after the SCS*TRC/HITMEN version, it was tested
on ONSLAUGHT and other AFL NTSC/PAL systems and was
found to be 100%.

Next from AFL came BALLZ 1+fx (0.6) from LK AVALON, which
was found to be not 100% complete and thus recieves preview
points only.

After this finally the fixed version of THE ZINJ COMPLEX
(4.3) made it to the boards.

Really just a small month compared to the Christmas rush
that is expected.
AVANTGARDE (GER, USA, POL, SWI, U.K) Points (8.6)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The international sensation found it difficult to appear as
regular as former times this month, but still managed some
releases.
Firstly came the controversial release of FIGHT FOR THURN
(-2.5) which was released with F4CG, unfortunately it was
a re-release of the previous 100% NTSC fixed and translated
ALPHA FLIGHT version. The only difference was a graphics
translation/change which is considered a bonus and not a
necessity for a 'first release'.

Next came the rather cool LACED TILES +fix (5.7) from MAGNA
MEDIA. Then came WONKY WORMS +fix (4.4) from CP VERLAG,
which was also released with F4CG.

Things should pick up from their slight fall down from normal
activities.
CHROMANCE (HUN, USA, GER, POL) Points (14.1)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Another very active month for this once again, rising group.
To start off, DORIS 2 PRV (0.4) from CYBERTECH LAB. and
MINESAPER PRV (0.3) made it to the boards.
Then came the nice full price BURAGO RALLY +fix (5.5) from
576 KBYTE which was also translated. Unfortunately a fix
file was released so -1.
BOMB MANIA PRV (0.5) from ART 7 production was released
followed by DMC 5.1 (0.0) which was said already to be
released. After a short break ACE PRO +fix (4.2) from ARTGAME
came.

After some days FLARE +fix (3.2) from ELECTRONIC
SOFTWARE and MCI EDITOR V1.0 (0.0),a tool, was thrown out.

More to follow with CHROMANCE in the month of December
and we wish them the best in the wares rush.
F4CG (BEL, SWE, USA, POL, GER) Points (3.7)
--------------------------------------------------------------

They started off with the promising FUTURE WORLD Prv (0.8)
from CHERRY SOFTWARE.
Then came FIGHT FOR THURN (-2.5) which is already
explained in the AVT section.
After some days came WONKY WORMS +fix (4.4) by CP VERLAG
and released with AVT.
Towards the end of November came BALLZ 1 Prv (0.0) which
is an earlier preview from the AFL first, so no points are
given or taken.

HITMEN (GER, USA, POL) Points (0.7)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Already tremendous support to NTSC land, they also provided
ALIOTH Prv (0.5) and later followed AKE Prv (0.2) from
Sweden.
MOTIV 8 (DEN, NOR, GER, USA) Points (7.2)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Last month some mistakes, so awarded this month was
SOLITAIRE (3.3) from LOADSTAR and FINAL CONQUEST (3.2).
Firstly came TRIC TRAC Prv (0.4) from IMAGE DESIGN and
IMMORTALITY IN SPACE Prv (0.3) from D-LITE DESIGN.

ONSLAUGHT (AUS, GER, HUN, DEN, TUR) Points (20.6)
--------------------------------------------------------------

An intense month for ONSLAUGHT begins with DEFENSIVE Prv
(0.8) the official sales prv from EBES/U.K.
Then came TWIN TERRORS +fix (5.6) from BAD BYTES, which
also contained a trainer bug.
Shortly after this they provided ORGATRON 2 +fix (4.2) from
CP VERLAG and a text adventure called MURDER IN THE
MONASTERY (0.0) from SOFTDISK PUBLISHING.
After some days came COLORA 2 100% +fix (4.4) from FRESH
PRODUCTIONS.
Released on the same day, BAFFLO Prv (0.3) a Polish ware
reached the boards.

Then came TUC Prv (0.3) and SUPERBALL +fix (4.2) from
BAD BYTES.
To round off a fair month came DIONYSUS 3 Prv (0.4) from
COMMODORE FORMAT/BIGTIME SOFTWARE.

SUCCESS*TRC (HOL, GER, USA, POL, U.K.) Points (16.5)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The ruling co-op showed continued activity with NITRO Prv
(0.2) then soon following with BRIX Prv (0.4) and PUMPKIN
Prv (0.4)
Not slacking in the pace came COLONIAL TRADER (0.0) which
was fixed by HITMEN, unfortunatly the loader system is not
100% on NTSC/PAL and AFL later released the 100% version.
Then came several days later EROTICA +fix (5.7) very cute
indeed!
CONFUSION QUEST (0.0) made it to the boards, was later
found to be made in ACTIVISION GAME MAKER, so no points.
Following soon came INVERTUS Prv (0.2) from LEPSI DEVEL.

Then came towards the end of the month DETECTOR Prv (0.3)
and possibly the best release of November, SPEEDY SLUG
(3.7) which was not fully NTSC/PAL fixed by COUNT ZERO.

To end the month they provided VARI +fix (4.6) from
CP VERLAG and fixed by HITMEN. THE CROSS Prv (0.2) and
MULTI-BITMAP WATCHER (0.0) a utility. A fine month indeed.

Lets examine the charts of November..

HITMEN were deducted -2 for the Colonial Trader loader bug.
CHROMANCE were also deducted -2 for the non-100% fix of
BURAGO RALLY.
ONSLAUGHT seemed to have gained a better release-rate
on the NTSC market with their fixer JOLZ.
As we get closer to Christmas, again the scene grows
smaller. Hopefully with promised releases and full games
coming from the immense amount of previews released,
we will have another exciting month.

Board Report

THE BOARD REPORT..............................by CROSSFIRE/MOTIV 8
----------------------------------------
Another month has passed and yet once more it is time to do a
little summing up about what has happened lately, on the
board front. How we can get accused of being a board-based
mag, when we only have ONE chapter concentrating strictly on
them is a mystery, but there we are..
         - -- --- ----- --------- ----- --- -- -
If you wish to get in contact with me, for whatever reason,
you can e-mail me on the internet on the following address:
"C01 AABC.DK", and YES, the address is slightly changed, so
get this new one down, please..
      - -- --- ----- ----------- ----- --- -- -
This month we go one on one with CYBERNOID/DEMONIX and
STORM, who is the sysop of a board in Canada by the name of
CORROSION OF CONFORMITY. Now, this name will ring a bell in
SOME people's heads and will be COMPLETELY new for others.
That's what WE are here for, you know! :-) But first.. -More!-
It seems as though formatting boards has become a sad sort
of fashion amongst lamers. It is definately a negative progess,
but then again, lamers have always existed - This is just a
new way for the poor at mind to have their pathetic revenge..
                      - -- --- -- -
THE DUNGEON was formatted AGAIN recently - Someone
seems to want Kyle's board to go down for good, but luckily
Alchemist has learned it the hard way, and had a very recent
backup which was put right up. The lamer behind this "deed"
put a piece of e-mail to Alchemist saying "SCS*TRC fucked
me over, now I'll take it out on you!". Obviously, this very
much speaks for itself and is hard to take very seriously..
                      - -- --- -- -
In this exact same manner several attempts to format MOUNT
OLYMPUS has occoured lately. Also HERE a piece of e-mail
was placed to the sysop saying something along the same
lines, only this message was in DANISH. We accuse nobody,
but leave it up to yourselves to decide what to believe. -More!-
We in the staff of THE PULSE have absolutely NO idea if both
format-attempts was performed by the same guy - It is,
however, quite unlikely.
- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -
On the swedish board-front not too much happened lately,
except for the fact that the very well established FAIRLIGHT-
hq WARES AQUARIUM turned HITMEN hq aswell. Obviously, as
the sysop, SLEDGE, stays in FAIRLIGHT and isn't going to join
HITMEN, the board is shared between the two groups.
- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -
THE FINAL GENOCIDE, Canadian HQ for the late PANDORA
went to the posse' of CHROMANCE, as the sysop, DEVIANT,
decided to join up with them. It is good to see CHROMANCE
having an ONLINE board in the USA again, considering the fact,
that EDGE OF MIDNIGHT was taken offline over a year ago and
although it was promised to get back up, never DID. Also, as
they recently lost their hq THE HIGHWAY to ONSLAUGHT, they
put up a new EHQ in Poland, sysop'ed by WOZIO/<C>.. -More!-
SANITARIUM, the EHQ of PANDORA apparently still runs under
this flag, although all members either left them or doesn't
even own a C64 anylonger. Things are rather foggy at this
point - However, MOSES, the sysop, WAS seen calling THE
MYSTICAL PARADISE, still using his PANDORA-macro's, so it
seems there is STILL a slight drift of life left after all..
- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -
STILL, apparently, no board is equipped with a 1-800 number.
The opinion these days is that to fix one isn't the effort worth
since somebody keeps turning them in, in order to get them
closed. DEFF/AVANTGARDE has stand accused of this dirty
deed for quite a while, but nothing has been proven (logically,
since it is IMPOSSIBLE to prove!). Supposively, he should
have done it cause he wanted to eliminate all competition that
DREAM PARK might have. We in THE PULSE however doubt,
that an established and experienced character such as DEFF
would ever sink this low, but according to reliable sources
everything should be pointing at him. We'll never know! -More!-
..Now.. - Good news! Last month, THE PULSE MAGAZINE had
a report from the very famous ALPHA FLIGHT head-quarters,
HOLIDAY INN CAMBODIA. As stated last month, the sysop,
POL POT, had some problems with his software which finally
resulted in him having to take his board offline. These problems
are solved now, though - The board is back up, only now not
running the RADAR Modded C*Base, but the ordinary C*Base
v3.2. The board should be running again without problems now
and can again be reached at its old number, which goes a little
something like this: XXX-XXX-XXXX..
- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -
AT&T obviously doesn't like it when people abuse the calling-
cards belonging to their costumers, which is why they have
been blacklisting boards like madmen over the last months. All
of boards which is blacklisted can be mentioned, but recently
MOUNT OLYMPUS joined the clan, that atleast according to
JAZZCAT/ONSLAUGHT. This problem will be fixed within no
time, though. Show some patience! :-) -More!-
As told earlier, the latest format-attempt at THE DUNGEON
was rather unsuccessful, as ALCHEMIST had a recent backup
which was put right up. Ironically enough, his board was dis-
connected only a few days later. Apparently, the reason is the
exact same as when it happened only a few months ago - Word
is, that the sysop was not able to pay his phonebill and there-
fore had his number taken offline. Rumours however say, that
the board will be back up again soon, running OMNI 128 instead
of C*BASE, as he is totally fed up with wannabe's formatting
his system. We can only hope and pray! ;-)
- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -
A board was opened in TURKEY recently - Sysop is DIGAHOLE
of ONSLAUGHT and it can be reached at the following number:
+XX-XXX-XXX-XXXX........The name of this board is "MONSTER".
The board is running independantly, meaning NOT as HQ for the
group of the sysop, although they will still be supporting it...!!!
- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -
                                                       -MORE-
More good news - According to CHOTAIRE/ALPHA FLIGHT, his
board, THE PIRATE ISLAND, will be put back online in the near
future. As you remember, the board was taken offline due to
have been yet ANOTHER victim of a raging lamer with far too
much knowledge about the C*BASE-backdoor for his own good.
Let's hope that these childish attacks will stop and that this
formatting lamer finds himself a LIFE to live!
- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -
NEVER ENDING WAREZ, an old board in the states which never
really got the recognition it deserved changed its number and
can now be reached at XXX-XXX-XXXX.. Keep those calls coming!
- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -

Huge thanks goes to JAZZCAT/ONSLAUGHT for helpful
assistance in bringing this months report up-to-date!!!

- -- --- ----- --------------- ----- --- -- -
                                                       -MORE-
Alright...as promised, we have gone one on one with Jerry, aka
CYBERNOID/DEMONIX/STORM, aka sysop of CORRISION OF
CONFORMITY.. We asked for an insight in this rather unknown
domain of his and got the following informations..

Cybernoid reporting for THE PULSE MAGAZINE:
------------------------------
THE HISTORY OF CORRISION OF CONFORMITY:
             -------------------------------
Back in the later months of '91, THE UNHOLY (ex-CHROMANCE)
and TASKMASTER (ex-EVIL) approached me about running a
hq for their newly formed group PARADOX. I was very flattered
that they wanted me to run their HQ, so agreed.

It was about time that I acquired a taste for demos and was
calling several other demo boards at the time and was getting
involved in the NTSC demo scene. I called a board run by THE
WIZ/STYLE named EMERALD PLACE and told him.. -More!-
(continued) ..that I'd be happy to become a support HQ for the
magazine that he was editor of, EXPOSE; he was enthused
about the idea and made CORRISION OF CONFORMITY a HQ.

PARADOX died shortly after (a few months later..).. NEGSPECT
(FLEA, then) and I released a demo "HAPPY" and that resulted
in us being asked to join STORM, thus C.O.C became STORM
World-HQ as well as EXPOSE HQ. At and around this time I
became friends with STARKILLER (ex-SPIRIT) and PHANTOM
LORD (ex-ACRISE) and they wanted me to run a HQ for ACRISE
and so I did. I'm not exactly sure how it became so, but I also
became headquarters for VARSITY and TRAITORS. Don't ask,
because I don't have the answer! :-)

At the end of 1993, I became a group hopper and joined STYLE,
then ODDITY, then back into STORM. It was about this time
that I cleared C.O.C as an HQ for anyone, except STORM.
                                                       -More!-
However, I joined DEMONIX and made COC their HQ along with
THE DUNGEON. In early 1994, my powerpack decided to get
bugged out and I just had no ambition to keep the board going,
so I just said "Screw it !!!" and turned off the monster power-
supply and it stayed off for about a year or so..

Finally - March 24th 1995, after a lot of promising and stuff like
that, I brought CORRISION OF CONFORMITY back to life.
STORM World-headquarters and 100% legal. Since then, DRIVEN
MAGAZINE has acquired COC as an HQ and am now working on
becoming HQ for a certain PAL group. (Details to follow at a
later date !!)..

Right now, it's running on Ultra-Com v1.3, four 1541's and two
1581's. You may think that this is very little space, but do
take into consideration that it is 100% legal and this is more
than sufficient to store today's releases.
                                                       -More!-
We have four subboards
--------------- - Scene Talk
                         - Uploads
                         - Demo Talk
                      and - Driven News

The co-sysops are NEGSPECT/STORM and ELWIX/STYLE.
Give it a call and be thrilled. We like a cross-section of users to
call, so don't be shy - Give us a call and see how the other
side lives! ;-)

Satirica

+ SATIRICA - THE AUTOPSY OF THE SCENE +
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome back to the domains of SATIRICA. We take pride in
basing out stories on lies and rumours. This means, if there is
something contriversial being spread around about you - feel
safe, that you will be able to read about it here, along with the
rest of the world.

Since the last edition, a lot of people have been sending us
letters and post-cards, as well as notes through the internet.
To those two took the time to write, we would just like to say
"The same to YOU!".

REGARDING SATIRICA,
The stories included in SATIRICA are pure fiction, all of which
are based on a satiric state of mind. We do not want to offend
anyone, but rather pass on a smile in these trying times.
We hope you will enjoy the read. General Editor, DUKE.
                   008 - LICENCE TO SLAP..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The infamous, but unknown, member of the Royal family of
England, BOD of TALENT, appeared on the TONIGHT SHOW
with JAY CHIN'O promoting his brand new film, ITCHY EYE.
The movie, which had been receiving brilliant reviews by the
Zimbabwean press, was accused of being a copy of the
infamous JAMES BOND movie GOLDEN EYE recently released.
When asked about these accusations, BOD was outraged,
claiming JAMES BOND was nothing but a 2 bit LEGEND
member missing in action. JAY CHIN'O calmed down BOD, who
had started singing the title tune for ITCHY EYE - "Don't hit
me, I'll sue". When asked about the role BOD was playing in
the movie, he replied- "I play the lead character, JAMES BOD,
with a licence to slap".

The movie will be playing in 4 places throughout the world,
showing on the 24th and 31st of December.
                  THE SATIRIC TOP FIVE LIST
--------------------------------------------------------------

TOPIC : Five ways suggesting THE PARTY 1995 will become
more of a PC and AMIGA party than one for the C64!

5. The price for the winner of the C64 competition is a stuffed
    beaver!

4. C64 freaks are told to make way for AMIGA freaks in the
    food-lines.

3. There will show up 1000 AMIGA and PC freaks for every
    C64 dude.

2. Visitors are given an armled when having paid the entrance
fee, while C64 visitors are forced to wear a star-bracelet!

1. The sign reading - "The shed is reserved for C64 freaks!!!".
                ONSLAUGHT MEMBERS MARKED..
--------------------------------------------------------------

ONSLAUGHT are tired of criticism from various editors within
the C64 media, claiming ONSLAUGHT does not have control
over their members - and frankly have too many of them.

In an attempt to get rid of this problem, ONSLAUGHT
introduced a brand new members-system. The plan reveals,
how ONSLAUGHT will shoot a tranquiliser-dart into each
member, knocking them unconscious. Then they tag them,
that way they can control their breeding, and protect against
over-population.

Finally the member is released again into the wild. A few of
the members complained about this inhumane plan, but
JAZZCAT was persistent, stating on a ONSLAUGHT
conference - "Either you guys do what is told, or you can all
leave".
CONTINUED..

Most members then started making threats, claiming they
would leave unless ONSLAUGHT would put a stop to the
tag-system.

The weekly released magazine, ONSLAUGHT IN REVIEW,
asked JAZZCAT what he would do, if all members should
decide to leave ONSLAUGHT - and JAZZCAT replied
"Members? We don't need no stinkin' members!".

SATIRICA .. Can it possibly get any stupider than this?

        THE MISTRESS INJURED WHILE COMPUTING..
--------------------------------------------------------------

It appears the female co-editor of THE TRIBUNE and
SKYHIGH, THE MISTRESS, will be out of action for the coming
months after a serious injury. According to the Dutch network,
BLABBER TV, THE MISTRESS should have broken a nail while
editing her sex column for THE TRIBUNE.

According to her personal Doctor, LUCKY SCUM, she also had
problems while editing the 50th edition of THE TRIBUNE. "She
accidentally pulled a stocking while writing, and had to stop"
claimed LUCKY SCUM, while possing for the press that had
met up in large numbers. THE MISTRESS is expected to return
to her services for THE TRIBUNE and SKYHIGH when her nail
grows back, meanwhile NASTINESS INC. will be editing the
sex columns, only writing about the interesting subject -
"How to attract female editors".
SKINHEAD AVOIDS ARMY DUTY WITH HONOURS..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The German cracker and phreaker, SKINHEAD, was suspended
from his army duties as of November month. SKINHEAD stated
on a news conference shortly after the suspension - "They let
me go because I was too good, in fact I think the officers
were tired of looking bad compared to me - so they released
me with honours".

The comments were put to doubt by the infamous German
slag-magazine, SCENE ZEITUNG, who claimed SKINHEAD had
been using army phones to call out - and due to this, his unit
did not get a warning call about a test missile going their way.

"Due to this incompetent fool, I lost 4 of my best men"
claimed the furious General Hitlerski. SKINHEAD was not
bothered with these comments - "How was I supposed to
know the red phone was off limits? They should have left -
CONTINUED..

a note or something!" stated SKINHEAD.

The German magazine, SCENE ZEITUNG, ended the scandal
with final comments from one of SKINHEAD's former officers -
"I have orders to shoot him if he gets within a radius of 50
miles".

But SKINHEAD should be safe, at least for the moment, as he
will be doing civil services for the next couple of months - in
an East-German Nuclearplant.

             AVANTGARDE DOES BERLIN - AGAIN!!
--------------------------------------------------------------

The eccentric leader and promoter of AVANTGARDE, DEFF, is
currently based in BERLIN working for a computer company.
But according to local Berlin citizens, DEFF was spotted
making odd speeches in streets and city squares. One person
claimed he saw DEFF running around in a library with a
JOHN F. KENNEDY mask on, shouting - ICH BIN A
WIENERSNITCHEL. Apparently DEFF also had problems with
the local police, who had to arrest him, after using the town
hall mast to flag his dirty underwear. The policeman who made
the arrest, claimed DEFF was acting odd due to the full moon.
"It seems this is an AVANTGARDE phenomenon. We had JACK
ALIEN on a visit last month, and he acted exactly the same.
Now we heard METAL had booked tickets on the next flight to
Berlin - and therefore we have asked for help from the
military". Whether the full moon has any impact is unknown,
but something is very odd about AVANTGARDE at the moment!
       PSYCHOBILLY JAILED FOR SELLING C64-DRUGS..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The former leader of RED SECTOR INC. and editor of THE
PULSE was caught by the German police for selling drugs.
According to the policeman who lead the investigation against
PSYCHOBILLY, the drugs were made to convert PC and AMIGA
freaks into C64 freaks. "It's horrible, I have never seen
anything like it" stated DRUGS'R'US Chairman FRIEDMAN
HASHISTGUT. Apparently PSYCHOBILLY had drugged COUNT
ZERO along with most of the members in HITMEN, and as a
result they all returned to the C64 scene more active than
ever. This could be described as some sort of wonder drug,
claimed the C64-pro policeman, but if an already active C64
freak takes the drug, he will develop a mutated interest for
the SNES machine.

At PSYCHOBILLY's residence, the police found several F4CG
members on a buying list - Scary stuff! Stay off drugs kids!
SANTA CLAUS PUT INTO HOSPITAL - CUT INTO PIECES..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The infamous, but still unknown, member of the royal family -
BOD of TALENT, was arrested on the 1st of December,
apparently due to excessive violence against a London SANTA
CLAUS located outside the shop - TOYS'R'US.

Friends of BOD claims he is extremely stressed, because of
the problems the royal family is currently undergoing. "I would
have helped DIANA if I could, but she refused letting me take
the heat for the affair with the riding instructor!!" claimed BOD
in the ROYAL TABLOID Christmas edition.

BOD was shopping for SMURFS - one for each Royal member,
in TOYS'R'US, when SANTA CLAUS offered BOD to come and
ride on his knee. As a result BOD took out some of his
infamous TALENT disks - and threw them into SANTA CLAUS,
who was cut into 24 pieces!
        INSANE GUEST REVEALS PERSONAL PROBLEMS..
--------------------------------------------------------------

Guest of last editions PROFILE, SAURON of ILLUSION,
admitted to having severe problems with holding his sexuality
back. At least he almost attacked the lovely female
taxi-driver, responsible of bringing him to the PROFILE studio,
waiting to make an exclusive interview with him.

(D) DUKE
(S) SAURON

(S) Damn.. The minute I was starting to get an erection, she
       brings me out to you!

(D) I do not think you have to worry about anybody noticing!

(S) Hey, you cannot abuse my penis. I will do that myself!
     I have experience!
CONTINUED..

(D) But this is a magazine, people cannot see you!

(G) What is the point of me being here then?

(D) Well, I was supposed to interview you, being a huge
     star and everything!

(G) I do not like to think of myself as the star-thing or
whatever, but you know - I wear it well!

(D) It is nice to see you have kept both feet on the ground!

(G) I am not any different than anybody else. I wake up in the
morning, I brush my teeth, I fix my hair, I walk into my
     germ-free biospheric exercise-chamber, and I work out
till the voices go away. Just like every other dude!
CONTINUED..

(D) REALLY?

(G) In fact, I was talking about the concept of staying
connected and staying real with my food-taster the other
day, and I think he was about to give me a huge
complement, when he just keeled over. Now I have to
replace him AND the cook. So don't tell me I do not have
     problems man!!!

(D) Well.. I am sorry to hear that. Anyway, thanks for coming!
--------------------------------------------------------------

That concludes this months merry edition of SATIRICA. We
hope you will join us next month - for the New Years edition.

We can promise you more of everything - as we celebrate the
goodbye of 1995, and the greeting of 1996! /DUKE

But, first of all some other crap... This month I am quite
pleased as I got a few (say 2) reactions which means that I
am sure that this chapter is being read by some people (say at
least 2 :-D). So I wanna thank these two dudes for wasting
their precious time by sending me an E-mail:

                           Diverse
                         Vik/Coma

Their reactions have been answered privately and have been
taken into consideration and you will see some results from
the next issue of The Pulse. :-)

And now, before starting the subject... on with some ...

...Internet-related news...

The Digital Dungeon, the biggest F.T.P. site for the C=64
Wares is gonna go down soon (So, whom am I gonna compete
to, eh Dimitri? :-D)... :-/...
This is also the The Ruling Company & Success F.T.P. site...
which is being maintained by one of the most known profiles
on the Net and also one of the most friendly people on the Net:
Viking/TRC+SCS also known with his real name: Dimitri.
They advertised everywhere (including the newsgroups) that,
for some lame reasons the Root of pitel-lnx.ibk.fnt.hvu.nl (this
is the Digital Dungeon's address) will soon close the site. So,
if anyone would like to take the biggest C-64 site into his
Machine can E-Mail to Dimitri pitel-lnx.ibk.fnt.hvu.nl (Dimitri)
or to CBA pitel-lnx.ibk.fnt.hvu.nl (Niels) or even to ....
BURGLAR pitel-lnx.ibk.fnt.hvu.nl (Enno).

C.M.D. (Creative Micro Designs that is) has planned to
release a new accelerator for the CBM 64 which will speed up
our already boombastic machine to (depending on the version)
10 or 20 Mhz (!!!!!!)... The Cartridge will hopefully be out by
January and the prices will be the following:

                     10 Mhz - 100 U.S. $

Another new hardware planned is the V.G.A. interface... which
is planned by another big C-64 US Company: TP (Threshold
Productions that is...)
Yes, you have read right. VGA, which means 640x400
Resolution in 16 or 256 colors (this is not sure yet) and the
awesome possibility to hook your C-64 to a PC (beurk!)
monitor (sounds like damn better quality).

Again you can contact TP at the following Addresses:

Ok. This is enough for the Internet-Related News.... let's head
to the topic of the month: the C-64 Bots.

First of all we have to make a little distinction between two
cathegory of bots: the Files - bots and the Op - bots. The aim
of the first cathegory is, quite obviously, to let files available
to the public of I.R.C. while the second one is to keep the
channel more stable, by giving ops to the people that deserve
it and by protecting the channels by bad illnesses such as
massdeop, desynch and whatever...
                                                          --
Here I am not gonna review the ones of the second cathegory
(also because some bots stay in they middle - they both give
files and Ops), I am only gonna mention them:

                KallaAnka (Mason/Motiv8)
                  Pitel (Viking/TRC+SCS)
                 WNG (Alangroup/U.S.S.R.)
                   Palace-b (2ny/Palace)

So the bots I am gonna review are: Pal-FTP (Palace),
Sharkbite (The Sharks) and Coolhand (Coolhand).

Coolhand (Coolhand/TRC+SCS)

Not much to say about this bot... It's quite cool... because it
contains all the files From Alchemist's Dungeon (the second
best C-64 board worldwide). Even though the files offered are
                                                          --
so good ones the bots has some little problems: first of all it is
located in the U.S. which means that if you are a European
you have big lag all the time and sometimes you don't even
succeed to transfer files due to the massive Net Load from the
U.S. to the Europe... so you ought to use it either in the night
or during the early morning (say till 8.00/9.00 AM CET). On the
other hand the bot is not very stable too.... it is not always
online and this means that if i.e. you decide to wake up early
to use the services offered by Coolhand and you dont even find
it online you get at least a little bit angry :-)...

Overall comment: if you have the luck to find Coolhand online
and not lagged then it's the best bot on #c-64.

Sharkbite (Mysdee/The Sharks):

This bot is the most stable Euro-bot I would say... having it
                                                          --
been online a lot before I joined the net myself. The Files
offered are mostly the ones contained in the funet archive in
Finland (ftp.funet.fi that is). Its quite nicely structured. You
can treat it like using an ftp site... ls to list directory, cd to
change directory and so on. Plus, a part from the stuff you can
find in ftp.funet.fi there also is a directory called 'games'
(both new and legendary ones) which contains a lot of stuff
uploaded by Mysdee and Deadbeat (both fom The Sharks). Due
to some security reasons you can access this directory only if
you are registered to the bot, which you can do by contacting
the Mysdee ( E-mail is: mysti oulu.fi ). Another good part
of this bot is that you download also from the Incoming
directory - COOL!!! -. The only bad thing is that the bot is
updated quite rarely so most of the times you get a very full
Incoming directory with mostly unknown stuff. This is not the
only problem. The other directories are also very big so if you
launch an ls you have to follow the bot only because the
                                                          --
directory itself will take a few screens to complete the listing.

Overall comment: The best bot on #c-64 on my opinion. And
also the most accessed one. Only very bad thing is that lately
irc.funet.fi (the server where sharkbite is logged) and its
sub-servers are often splitted :-/...

PAL-FTP (2NY/Palace):

This is the Palace bot maintained by another well-known
profile on the net, 2ny/Palace. This bot contains the files of
the palace ftp site: dhp.com.
As told in the previous issue this site is mainly a U.S. mirror of
the Pitel site. This means that you can find all the pitel stuff
on the bot too. Word has it that this is quite useful ad the only
bot that comes out of The Digital Dungeon is Pitel and does
not offer any files at all.
                                                          --
I am only asking myself what will there happen when Pitel will
go down as said before... I hope they will find somewhere else
to get the stuff from. What to add. Ah yes... this is defenetly
the most stable bot on the I.R.C. at the moment due to the
frequent *.funet.fi splites. So this is the most present bot on
#c-64.

Overall Comment: not much too say. A nice bot full of nice
stuff, but all in all nothing special to comment on :-).

Ok. This is all about the bots.
Next chapter will contain some usefull talks about some nice
stuff that you can find on the net... (tools that are).

Please, feel free to send any comment or reactions to me by
contacting me in the way that suits better for you...
everything will be atleast mentioned.

THE 1995 SCENE AWARDS SCENE ILLUSTRATED
--------------------------------------------------------------

The year of 1995 is almost over, and we are left with a lot of
really good memories from our various scene experiences
with the Commodore 64. A lot of people will look back on the
year of 1995 as a fantastic year, and I am sure we will all find
that certain individuals or groups stood out, and gave the C64
and the scene that sorounds it credit. Made it a place that
guarantees a good time!

The New Years edition of THE PULSE MAGAZINE, will give you
a unique opportunity - in fact a world premier, of honouring the
best groups and individuals of 1995 with the Scene Awards.
The winners of the scene awards will be listed - and possibly
interviewed, at THE PARTY 1995 in Denmark, where The New
Years edition of THE PULSE MAGAZINE will be released.

                                                          --

The nominations for the 1995 Scene Awards will be made by
you, the readers. All you have to do, is make a list of your
prefered candidates in the different catagories, and we will do
the practical work, such as counting the votes. The award will
not be in the form of an object, but in the form of extreme
recognition, respect and prestige.

The following catagories will take part in the 1995 Scene
Awards. Every member of the C64 scene is permitted to list 3
candidates for each catagory, but may not vote for him or
herself - or his or her group.

BEST GROUP, BEST CRACKING-GROUP, BEST DEMO-GROUP,
BEST MAGAZINE and BEST SCENER.

Give credit where it is due, cast your votes before Christmas!
PREPARING FOR THE PARTY 1995 SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT
--------------------------------------------------------------

From the same team that was awarded of holding the "Most
important scene event in 1994", we now await the 5th
anniversary of the original scene party - called THE PARTY
1995.

As always, THE PARTY 1995 will be held in Denmark. This year
the location is moved to the Danish city of Fredericia in the
middle of Denmark. Reason for this decision is unclear, but
according to the arrangers, the new place is better than the
former ones, and also has much more comfortable facilities -
which is most welcome. The party place is called "Dronning
Margrethe Hallen" - or in English "Queen Margrethe Hall",
which is the largest Hall and Conference complex in all of
Scandinavia. The place apparently has an incredible capacity
of 4000 people, which is bigger than any location I have ever
seen a party held at before.
Among the promising facilities, as mentioned before - the
party place holds up to 4000 people. There is also a separate
and quiet hall for sleeping. A cafeteria and a kiosk will be open
all day, and according to the arrangers of the party, they
should be selling products at fair prices. The fair prices
remains to be seen, but looking at former parties, the prices
have always been incredibly high - almost close to robbery.
Let us hope this party will prove different, although it is quite
doubtful - therefore we urge you to bring your own food.

The equipment upon which we can expect to see the
demo-competitions - and information throughout the party
about various arrangements, will be an extremely powerful PA
equipment (20.000 watt) and a 1000 x 800 cm high quality
screen. We look forward to that, always a treat to be at these
competitions - a huge one in fact!

                                                          --
Although THE PARTY itself is an event not to be missed, the
arrangers promises extra events. Whether or not C64 sceners
should have any interest in these events is debatable, but
here we go with some information about some of them.

Apparently the party offers 50 hours of non-stop activities. 9
main competitions with great prizes - although the C64
competition prizes remains unknown. A lot of computer-game
competitions with prizes, live concerts on stage, enormous
RAVE-party, Laser Matic - the laser game, conferences with
Escom and Amiga Technologies and a Giant Magic Card
tournament. This and much more ensures all visitors will not
get bored throughout the party!

Moving on to the competitions, we were only presented with
the Amiga and PC demo prizes. The reason why the arrangers
of the party did not state the prices for the C64 competitions
is unclear, but I predict the reason is, that they are unsure
about the actual number of C64 sceners which will attend the
party. It is therefore very likely, the arrangers have worked
out a system, which can be multiplied with the number of C64
freaks - and then you have the result of the prizes for the C64
competitions. It is regrettable that such a system appears to
have been forced in use once again, but it is understandable,
when you consider how unstable the C64ers usually are when
meeting up for a party.

However, the prices we do know about, except for the WiLD-,
Intro- and C64-demo competitions, goes as follows:

           Amiga Demo PC Demo
           1. $3500 1. $3500
           2. $1500 2. $1500
           3. $750 3. $750
           4. $500 4. $500
           5. $250 5. $250
           Music Compo GFX Compo
           1. $700 1. $700
           2. $400 2. $400
           3. $300 3. $300
           4. $200 4. $200
           5. $100 5. $100

That concludes the main information about the party. Now we
move towards some of the more ugly data, the prohibitions
and the entrance price. At former parties, the entrance price
has always been quite high. According to our terminology, a
proper price would be around 150 Danish crowns (approx. 25$),
but the set entrance fee for THE PARTY 1995 has been decided
to cost 250 Danish crowns (approx. 42$). No doubt it is very
expensive, but when considering how seldom such a party is
held, money should not be a problem.

                                                          --
In terms of the list of things that is strongly illegal at the
party, the arrangers will not accept anyone selling food, disks,
etc. without their permission. Alcohol and drugs are also not
allowed at the party place, but according to our sources, the
city of Fredericia should have a few bars where beers can be
bought for somewhat okay prices. According to the arrangers,
intoxicated people will be thrown out or handed over to the
police, and beers and drugs will be confiscated and not given
back. I personally find this to be complete hysteria, the fact
that friends cannot go out and buy a couple of beers, and then
return to the party place - is complete nonsense. Therefore we
urge you to use your best judgement, and try not to act drunk
when re-entering the party place. It is up to you ofcourse.

Violence is strongly forbidden, which I think everyone in the
scene only agree with. As all former parties, it is almost a
tradition, that some people wants to beat others up on this
occasion. I think the scene should take actions towards -
this, and perhaps make it an unwritten law - C64ers do not
fight each other, at least not in a physical state. It is lame,
that certain people decides not to go, because they have been
threatened by certain C64 dudes. Let us all stand together,
and fight against violence. I propose we exclude any violent
individuals from the scene - at least it is a subject worth
thinking about.

Now moving on to the most important information about the
party - the date of the event. According to our sources, the
party will be held from Wednesday 27th of December at 10:00
CET to Friday 29th of December at 12:00 CET. Here follows
some of the important addresses and other data's.

magazines, some of which will be PROPAGANDA and SKYHIGH
and probably RELAX. We hope to meet you there!

The strongest are on the lists, be it depending on current,
recent even passing strenght, so alternatives 1 and 2 are
equal to me! I would say that most groups still on the charts
still have a great potential lurking inside, but just not the time
to express it!

Sure, some of the groups on the lists are not even on the C64
anymore, but does that matter? Or if they are not on the lists,
who cares? Mr.Z is and will always be my one great idol for
having the innovative brain of a genious. He's not on any list,
but say he's not elite and accept have be sniffying your heels
with a running chainsaw! Answer 1 is closest to this opinion,
but not close enough I guess..

According to the poll, 29% of the people in the scene share his
opinion.
OPINION POLL # 2
------------
We are moving closer towards Christmas, and there is a few
parties ahead in the scene schedual. Do you plan on attending
any of these parties?

1. I do not like computer parties.

2. I have already made plans to visit one, my bags are packed
and ready to go.

3. I have not decided whether I will go to one or not.

4. I simply cannot afford to go. I would like to though, but that
is life.

None fit again. I really want to go, but I have a family to think
of, and just cannot sneak away some three days on the few
days being time off.

According to the poll, 81% of the people in the scene have
either not decided to go, or will not go due to various reasons.
OPINION POLL #3
------------
Most of the Magazines released today on the C64 has huge
news section. What is your opinion about their responsibility in
terms of handing these news?

1. I hate when magazines accept news that are incorrect.
They ought to check all the news they get, even if that means
a delay period.

2. I support all magazines that makes an effort to bring good
news. They are not to blame for a few incorrect news.

3. Magazines that has any or few false news are a disgrace.

4. We should not expect too much from the magazines.

1=19% - 2=62% - 3=13% - 4=6%. Answers = 16 people.
OPINION POLL ANALYSER BACCHUS/FAIRLIGHT

Answer number 2. Not seldom is there not a definite truth.
F.ex. if person A get kicked but is said to have left on his own.
Depending on who you ask, even if both parties can be
considered "the horses mouth", they will give you two
different stories.

Keeping the standard of keeping your own source close enough
to the action, you have ensured decency in news coverage.
This is what could be expected from a mag produced on the
spare time. A mag pushing this limit closes to 100% truth
(whatever that is) should brag with this and deserves special
honour for it's effort, but this couldn't be demanded as the
general rule!

According to the poll, 62% of the people in the scene share his
opinion!

Tales from TDJ

Tales From The Darkside
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome my friends, to the third and final installment of my
series for the Pulse. Final yes, because I have decided once
again to become a player in the demo-scene, actively taking
part in it, instead of serving as a bystander and merely telling
other bystanders what is happening. It has been too long
since I actually used my c64 to code on, instead of watching
other people's work. Because there are other things in this
life which demand my time & energy, such as school, personal
life and (dare I say it) my pc-group. I cannot allow myself to
waste it on writing articles which probably are seldom read
anyway ..

Before I go on, first my thanks to those I have worked with
the past months and who kept up with my constant failure of
delivering my writings in time: Duke & Syndrom. To them, and
the rest of the Pulse staff: nice working with you, good luck !
Anyway, let's talk about demos. C64 demos. C64 demos of
today and yesteryear, and especially the differences between
them.

If you compare the award-winning demos of the past years to
those released in the golden days of the legal c64 scene, one
thing will soon become appearant: the fact that present c64
demos are not really c64 demos at all.

Well, technically speaking they are, ofcourse, c64 demos, but
still they lack a certain feeling those old legendary pieces had.
Too often they just consist of pc-like effects and build (can
you say 'trackmo' ??), instead of utilising the real power of
the c64. Examples are a-plenty: Byterapers, Oxyron, Reflex ..
All top groups, without any doubt, but their work doesn't do
anything for me, even makes me feel lost sometimes. I mean,
if I want to see gouraud vectors at all, I would start up one of
the many pc demo's I have in my collection, right ?? Right ..
That does not mean however that I condemn their actions or
dislike their products. I too can awe at an effect never held
possible on the c64 but not for long, soon I'll run bored with it,
while I am capable of watching certain classics time and time
again. Anyway, in a perfect world these demos would still be
around but there would be 'real' c64 demos as well. And that
balance seems to be lost somewhat. Sure, there are demos
released today which feature rasterbars, scrolls and demand
the user to press the spacebar in case he wants to progress.
And while those things may be important (but not obliged)
facets of a 'real' c64 demo, these demos usually are poor.

So what we need, imho, are more c64 demos containing the
classic style, while at the same time a certain amount of
quality. Demos that do possess the 'feeling', the 'glow',
which by the way is not only lacked by current c64 demos,
but also by legal productions on other machines as well. It's
just not the same anymore, it seems ..
Damn, there I go, all nostalgic again :)

Another bad side of the present demoscene is the fact that
most demos are released on parties, and if for some reason
not finished in time, postponed until a next party instead of
released just a few weeks later. And with the small amount of
c64 parties these days, that's a bad thing. Also, even with
internet etc. it's still rather hard to collect those demos that
ARE released. Damnit, I don't want to start swapping again,
that is a thing of the past for me, hehe .. Still, you have hear it
all before, and it seems there is no way of changing it back, all
we can do is adjust.

Well, before I go, walk out of here .. let's all try to bring that
wonderful scene back, okay ?? We do not need c64 demos
going the same way as c64 games have gone.

That's it, that's all. CU around .. and keep the spirit alive ..

Meet the press

+ MEET THE PRESS - A WORLD OF MAGAZINES +
--------------------------------------------------------------

The media in the scene has profound power to be a positive
influence. This is where we come in, welcome to another
edition of MEET THE PRESS. The section dedicated to take on
the media - the organisers in the C64-scene.

MEET THE PRESS also operates as the official reaction
section of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. We invite you to send us
your thoughts and views, be they positive or negative, about
this magazine. We will print your letters in the next edition,
if they reach us before the 18th of December.

This edition we have a great program for you. We discuss the
magazine improvements into 1996 in THE MEDIA TODAY.
We also bring you an exclusive interview with PROPAGANDA
editor, NEWSCOPY, and a report on the Silver edition of
VANDALISM NEWS and more. General Editor, DUKE!
THE PULSE EXPANDS ON P.R. AREA MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

The month of December will prove to be a very important
period for the Editorial at THE PULSE MAGAZINE, as they will
attempt to take a giant step towards improving the relations
between the magazines and its readers.

THE PULSE MAGAZINE plans to launch a brand new Public
Relations package to the readers of the magazine, the first
one accompanied by the December edition - which you are
currently reading. The General editor of THE PULSE, DUKE, felt
the usage of vote-sheets and endless questionares were more
than outdated, and therefore this new method should be able
to replace them all. But the best thing about this brand new
edition to the magazine industry, is the actual outcome. The
readers are encouraged to help with all parts of the
magazines, and with the user-friendly method, they will no
longer be bothered with doing it.
CONTINUED..

The idea for the Public Relations package, which currently is
exclusive to THE PULSE MAGAZINE, was quite simple. A
user-friendly note-maker would be used to edit opinion polls,
voting's, etc. all part of helping the magazine in becoming
better and larger. The user of the Public Relations package
simply has to load the package, run it, and then edit the text,
that has been made available for the coming editions. When
having completed the many questions, charts and other
interactive sections, the user would simply return the note to
their contact at THE PULSE MAGAZINE.

A special Public Relations file, created solely for the purpose,
is currently being planned - but till then the simple note-maker
should do.
IMPROVEMENT INTO 1996 THE MEDIA TODAY
--------------------------------------------------------------

The magazines are once again considered a glamorous edition
to the C64 scene, and have probably never been more popular
than now. With the decline of games released, and thereby the
obvious loss of control for the cracking part of the scene, the
magazines have taken over a larger role of responsibility as a
productive section of the C64. Producing a magazine have
become more of a recognized occupation today, than in the
past. A group can therefore easily earn credits in the eyes of
people by producing a magazine, rather than being active
cracking games or coding demos.

Among the many areas the magazines have improved, are the
increasing number of sceners seeking membership in a
magazine. Membership? In a magazine? Exactly! Most of
today's larger magazines, have as many members as an
average sized group. This is due to bigger and more thorough

reports from the scene, and the competition between the top
magazines have encouraged General Editors, to seek out more
qualified people to join the sides of their respective staff.

Competition must be said to be a key word in the success of
the magazines today. The current top of magazines are no
longer represented by 3 or 4 productions. It is more likely
inhabited by twice as many magazines, in which the following
could be considered (in no order) : PROPAGANDA, SKYHIGH,
THE PULSE, RELAX, DOMINATION, VANDALISM NEWS, NITRO
- and possibly a few more. These magazines are all qualified
candidates in the race for the number one spot in the coming
months. All of them are written by competent editors, with
experience and background within all major areas in the scene.
This could be described as another keyword in magazine
editing - experience about the areas in which the editors

write about - as opposed to the past, where editors, as an
example, with no knowledge about coding, reviewed demos.
Needless to say, it was hardly the best of reviews that was
made.

A very funny edition to the magazine industry, is the fact that
competing magazines have started greeting each other - as
you would find demo and cracking-groups do. This proves that
magazines are improving towards becoming an independent
part of the scene, and thereby no longer playing a more
passive role in cracking or demo groups.

If we had to draw a conclusion from the improvement in the
magazine industry today, it would be a very positive one. The
C64 scene can use all the activity it can get, and no doubt
magazines are more qualified than any to bring a lot of that!
SPOTLIGHT ON PROPAGANDA EDITOR MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

(D) DUKE
(N) NEWSCOPY

(D) Welcome once again to the spotlight of THE PULSE, PER.
People may remember we had an excellent interview with
you a while ago, obviously about PROPAGANDA and your
involvement with it. At that time, very few people
believed in a promising future for PROPAGANDA - I gather
due to the large internal problems staff-wise, but certainly
also due to the delay difficulties PROPAGANDA was
suffering. Today however, you have turned the picture
completely around, and during the last couple of editions,
you have received stunning reviews from both your
competitors as well as your readers. What is your secret
    for this splendid success?
(N) To be honest, I do not really consider it being a secret. We
have had our focus clear and stated since I took over the
magazine from ANTICHRIST with issue 9. My view of
scene media is, that far too many magazines do not think
on their own. Producing a magazine requires analysing,
objectivity and maturity. My concept of making the news,
analytic and juicy, has at points offended the public, but
has also set a standard in how news should be written.
Most of the top magazines today cover on the same basis.
PROPAGANDA has always been rejected by the mail-
market, and we have been well aware of it. Sometimes it
annoys me, seeing so few people vote for the magazine,
while my competitors (mags) speak warmly of me.
However, it would be naive of me to think that the mail-
groups would be interested in reading only about the top.
What may have caused a growing reliability in the
magazine, is the steady support from DEFF (editor of
THE LIST and THE REAL LIST). With him on my side,
we have been able to keep up an intense releasing
schedule. Organisationwise, we have seen to it to cover
the channels available. The Internet being one, with mail
and boards still in clear future. Still, I must say I think I
have grown since the start. I have taken inspiration from
outside the scene and managed to adapt it for us. With
that in mind, I dare to say we are one of the few
intelligent magazines on the market today.

(D) Having added a lot of new editions to the history of
PROPAGANDA, you have reached what is considered the
first great milestone for scene magazines. How do you
feel about standing before the 20th edition, especially
when having been congratulated in magazine splendour
    the many previous editions?

(N) With issue 20 in focus, I am proud at times, having been
able to keep up the magazine since the early days in G*P.
Speaking from my heart, I can say I often feel a great
anxiety about putting the pieces together for each issue.
After many hours, days and weeks of hard work, I can lean
back pleased with what we have produced. With plenty of
critics acclaiming us recently, it functions as a boost. The
real boost comes from the debates. By golly they are too
few on the 64 scene, but among the more interesting ones
was the one between PROPAGANDA and THE PULSE back
in 1993. Most recently ONSLAUGHT have jumped me for
editorial work in issue 19. Despite being very insulted, it
will trigger me to higher grounds. With debates continuing
on the far side, I can keep up this work of mine, my
journalism and addiction for many years to come.

(D) It is no secret, that I support your point of view. We need
to debate controversial subjects to make the scene a
more interesting place, otherwise the future would look
grim and boring. In the 19th edition of PROPAGANDA, you
proclaimed a lot of special features for the anniversary
edition to come. I realise you would probably prefer to keep
some of those as a secret, otherwise they would obviously
not work as a surprise. But perhaps you could reveal a few
ideas or thoughts you have made about the 20th edition?

(N) Issue 20 will be released in Denmark, on paper. That is the
least we can do to show appreciation to our readers. Not
to lose track on our diskbased work, PROPAGANDA GOLD
will be released on disk late November, as any normal
issue we ever did. However, the PROPAGANDA concept is
growing. The most recent addition to the family is
PROPAGANDA MUSIC, a magazine about the Commodore
64 music industry. $ixx/F4CG, very talented editor will
be held responsible for the concept, while many free-
lancing musicians will be working on a regular basis.
Somewhere Spring 1996, PROPAGANDA will also be
published on the SNES, edited by me among many others.
On the no publishing scale, MOTLEY/F4CG is working
full-time to finish the PROPAGANDA homepage on internet,
where you will be able to read online, as well as tons of
    other possibilities.

(D) The past couple of years the scene media has changed
dramatically. The readers demand more from the mags,
while the increased competition in the top has forced new
ideas for the industry. What is your opinion about the
media the scene has today, and how would you compare it
to the media of other systems?

(N) It is getting better. It is interesting when you look at it.
THE ILLEGAL by JEFF SMART was the first magazine ever
on the 64, and was a very intelligent and stimulating
medium on the market. When people invented the disk-
magazines, the distribution was solved, but people needed
a few years to pollish the skills of performing good
journalism on screen. I think some of us have finally taken
a lot of inspiration from outside the scene which is very
good. The magazines on Amiga and PC, have also
contributed slightly to the growth. I mean, even though
the 64 started it all, the other scenes we have and see
today have taken on new ideas, and most importantly
new generations who have never seen the 64. In most
cases they are stubborn mules (and should show respect
to their roots!), but some people show up with a breath
of fresh air. 64-wise, the magazines I respect the most
is THE PULSE (even though I was very disappointed in
the decline a year back). DOMINATION and VANDALISM
also have what it takes, if they just choose not to overdo
things at times. One of the few decent editors
unfortunately lost a lot of faith in the 64, and was put
down by a LAZy group, being ENDURO/FLT. In my eyes,
he had what it took to do something valuable for the
    scene.
(D) Reading through the latest editions of PROPAGANDA, it is
obvious to me first-hand, that you have chosen a serious
style of editing, instead of the more widely used casual
method. What is your opinion about the different style of
editing, and what type of reader goes with it?

(N) I write for the intelligent - in other words I write for all
people on the scene. Why I have chosen to analyse and
report on a serious basis, is that I want people to
understand they can have much more than a simple
'JESUS joined BALI - JESUS was kicked from BALI - BALI
died'-type of journalism. We are thinking individuals, and
based on what I write, the reader can create his own
picture of a group, the happenings and the tragedies. I
personally loathe the ways some magazines have chosen
to work with a casual concept. It leaves you just as
empty after reading - as the minutes before.
(D) I could not agree with you more PER. In closing, maybe
you should repeat the date when the 20th edition of
    PROPAGANDA will be released!

(N) As said, PROPAGANDA 20 will be released on paper in
Denmark. The Gold edition will be published shortly, the
last week in November to feed the disk-readers who
    support us.

(D) All right, thanks a lot PER. Best of luck for the future, and
congratulations on the anniversary. Can we expect to see
you and the PROPAGANDA staff at the FREDERICIA party
    in Denmark this Christmas?

(N) By golly you will. Denmark is one of the most important
get-togethers in the 64-scene. This year, I notice an
intense interest for it, and I look forward to meeting many
    of my old friends.
VANDALISM NEWS GOES SILVER MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

The wildly popular ONSLAUGHT magazine, VANDALISM NEWS,
celebrated the release of the 25th edition in Mid November
1995 - also known as the Silver edition. The General Editor of
VANDALISM NEWS throughout its history on the C64,
VENGEANCE, gave a nostalgic description of the events that
shaped VANDALISM NEWS as it looks today.

We celebrate along with VANDALISM NEWS in its anniversary
mood, and look back upon a history of serving the scene as a
top of the class magazine. It has proven to be one of the few
magazines, that really cares about the scene - and the people
that makes it special. It will no doubt continue to make
history, and with VANDALISM NEWS, we can all feel safe, that
the number of our future will remain 64!

                                                          --
Historical events of VANDALISM NEWS.

* The very first edition of VANDALISM NEWS was released
under the label of MYSTIC, an Australian based group, in the
beginning of the 1990's. VANDALISM NEWS managed to put
out 4 editions under this label, when MYSTIC died.

* The 5th edition was released under the SUNRISE label, but
soon trouble was to force VANDALISM NEWS away from this
group, and it therefore signed on with THE FORCE.

* THE FORCE was label for VANDALISM NEWS through issue 7
and 6.

* BODYCOUNT was the next stop for VANDALISM NEWS, and
the Australian based group was looked upon as a serious home
for the well travelled magazine. Thus VANDALISM NEWS
released the 8th, 9th and 10th edition under this label.
* But VANDALISM NEWS decided to pack its bags once again,
and move onto the REBELS label. Here it was released on only
one occasion - issue number 11.

* The editorial of VANDALISM NEWS then decided upon the
label of SHAZAM, another very promising Australian label -
which according to the General Editor, VENGEANCE, really
looked to be a solid base for the controversial magazine. But it
was only to be the release of the 12th and 13th edition that
saw the light of day under SHAZAM, and VANDALISM NEWS
moved on in its search for the best possible label.

* VANDALISM NEWS then decided to become an independent
production. Perhaps it was due to the editors being tired of
moving around, but as VENGEANCE had joined SCS*TRC - who
refused to take on VANDALISM NEWS, it could have been the
only option for it. The 14th through 16th edition was therefore
put out as independent productions. But as the success of
VANDALISM NEWS improved, SCS*TRC finally decided to take
it under its well respected wings. Here followed the 17th and
18th edition, and by this time VANDALISM NEWS was finally
considered a heavy weight magazine in the industry, and it
was to be found higher in the charts than ever before.

* February 1st of 1995 VANDALISM NEWS signed on with the
newly formed mega-power in the scene, ONSLAUGHT. This
group has been the home of VANDALISM NEWS ever since,
and here it has so far managed to release as many as 7
editions - more than under any other label before.

Today VANDALISM NEWS is celebrating the release of the
25th edition - hereby having reached the Silver milestone. It
has been a treat to follow this magazine grow, and although
many may not have believed in this magazine from the
beginning - maybe even the General Editor himself, it has
blossomed into an institution of C64 scene magazines.

World of Demos

WORLD OF DEMOS
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to another edition of WORLD OF DEMOS, your guide
to the latest legal releases of the C64-Scene.
As Christmas is coming closer, and so does The Party 5, it's
only natural that most demogroups are preparing a demo to
enter the competition there, which we look forward to with
high expectations...
As a matter of fact the last month was quite silent regarding
released demos, so we just got one review for you...:

MELTDOWN by REBELS

The staff is the same as always:
Programming Critic...........................MR.SEX/BYTERAPERS INC.
Graphical Critic............................EARTHQUAKE/COSMIC STYLE

MELTDOWN by REBELS
----------------
MR.SEX about the code,
Well, this time there is only one demo to be reviewed and
sadly it is the last one ever from Rebels.
The demo starts with a moving Rebels logo and a text writer
in sprites giving some information about what is going on.
Then the screen flashes and a title picture comes in and the
demo starts loading while showing a vectorball routine. Well,
actually it's just a simple sprite routine, but it looks quite ok
when those bubbles or balls are visible through the meltdown-
logo only.
The next (or the first?) effect is a picture-rotator. It's made
by altering bitmap colors in character resolution and some
extra colors have been done using dithered bitmap. The routine
is fast, but the area for the effect is quite small, so nothing
very special.
A plotter routine is displayed while loading the next effect. It
is a stencil filled sine wave plotter. Ofcourse it doesn't fill the
stencil texture, but sprites which are over the picture. Next
one is a quite similar plot-routine like that previous one, but
this time it is been displayed in 4 positions.
Ok, then we have vertical raster bars which show the
advantage of overlaid sprites again. This one is nice looking,
but not in a very wide area. Nice graphics bordering the effect
give it a better looking, though.
After a picture there is a common sine plasma which uses
dithered chars an enhanced multicolor mode. I have to admit
that his one is quite slow, eventhough it does load meanwhile.
After the loading has finished a vectorcube pops in. Not filled,
but a wireframe routine drawing an animated tv-cube. Well,
this one is again quite slow and outdated.
Soon yet another sine plasma comes in being followed by one
more plasma before the end part is being loaded. This is a
sprite upscroller giving you some information about the death
of REBELS. Well, there is also an EOR-routine in chars behind
the scroller.
This was a perfect example of an average demo...nothing
more...so

44 % for the coding

EARTHQUAKE about the graphic,
The two-screen-wide intrologo consists of outlines only,
which don't look original at all. The used colors aren't
attractive, too - but atleast the text infront of it stays
readable. The only "effect" is the suggested light down from
the right corner. The next picture is more impressive. "Rebels
presents Meltdown" gets displayed on this arrangement.
The outlines except of the "presents" part are round and look
quite good even "Meltdown" would look a bit cooler if there
were some lightspots on the yellow filling. I only dislike the
grey stars on the background, which, in my opinion, don't fit
there. The next graphic shows the title of the demo again. I
like the style of this 3 color hires logo. It also casts a shadow
on the background. Above the rotation part effect we have an
example of logo-massproduction. The fillings of all characters
look the same - even copied. I admit that the creator used as
many colors as possible by this mode, but that's not enough
when outlines have gone through the years. Next the screen
gets splitted into 3 parts. On the left side a children's
handwriting with black color gets used as Rebels logo. The
background looks rather unattractive aswell. Inbetween these
3 parts the demoeffect covers a very experimental - should I
say picture ? Well, on the light red background there are lots
of antialiased pixelformations and somehow it reminds me to
nothing more than a test-screen... On the right side
"Meltdown" is written again in a usual charset with a purple
palette as filling. Turning one more part we are shown a
splitted screen again. This time the left side contains a
comic-like picture of a sunsetbeach with a palm. All in all I
don't like that one. The palm doesn't have a shadow, the
sunset was not that well done and some more things could
have been done much better. The right side is just filled with
colored squared and somewhat like clouds - no motiv at all.
The next picture, the best one of this demo, was done by
Astaroth and as almost usual he did a very good job. So there
is a male face in profile that looks right to a square, in which
he pixeled some houses. The face is extremely colorful in some
parts and by the first look I though of FLI but Astaroth used
the multicolor mode at it's best. Below the head there are
some balls who lie on the same white cloudy background.
Summarising this one up - it looks very nice; good shadows
and good pixeling.
The line vector part contains a better example of mass
produced logos. The once painted block was copied over and
over again to get some letters out of it. As an "O" - letter a
radioacticity-sign was used, which gives the whole creation a
taste of individuality, after all.
Next the electrons burn a rebels-logo on your screen , which's
background looks familiar to the intropicture's one, but
through it's holes you can see some stars this time. As seen
in the logo before the filling of this one were copied - boring...

Rating for the graphics: 55 %

THE SYNDROM about the music,
Well, another demo which only features used music, so you
know my part isn't going to be very large...
Anyway, just to mention the names - the intromusic was done
by DOS/ADSR and is rather good, the mainmusic by EVS,
which was his contribution at Tribute'94 deserves a mention
anyway. Because somebody spoiled it up completely. After
some time the voices of that tune start splitting, meaning
that one voice looses sync with the others - sounds awefully
if you know the tune, but on the other hand quite interesting if
you don't. Anyway I wonder how people are able to produce
such bugs...:)

13 % for the music...

Now that makes an overall rating of 42.5 % and the Top 5 of our
Demo-chart remains unchanged...

ADVERTISEMENTS EDITED by KBS
--------------------------------------------------------------

Here we are at the advertisements... The chapter that gives
you the opportunity to enter the magic world of SWAPPING!

Best move to pull now, could very well be to grab a pen, write
down your address, and pass it onto:

KBS, Dalvej 8, Vester Nebel, 6040 Egtved, Denmark

That way your advertisement can be seen among those other
cool dudes, whos address has been pasted on the following
pages.

Anyway, legitimate traders are recognized by a "+" infront of
their handles and those who swap both legal and illegal wares
are marked with a "*". Now, I wish you good luck in finding
some new contacts...

As you can see, there hasn't been a lot of changes in this
chapter since last issue. Unfortunately, it's due to the fact
that only a few returned the address-sheet I introduced
earlier on. But, nevertheless, I'll see to it that it gets a 2nd
spreading. So, PLEASE... USE IT!
