THE SCENE AT A GLANCE
THE SCENE AT A GLANCE

Hello, Skyhigh readers.

This is Vengeance of Onslaught writing a chapter for
this fine magazine, as its the 3 year edition I guess
and because Jesper has asked me to. Its infact an
honour to write for this mail based magazine, for a
change a light editing job. So I guess you can say its
sort of a pleasure for me.

Anyway, the first thing that I was thinking when I
decided to do this, was what the hell I was going to
write about as when I write Vandalism News I almost
always have subject pre-set. So I thought looking
over scene since I've been around would be a decent
idea, as so now I'm going to talk about happenings
from today... to yesterday.

Lets start...

1988...

1988, this was a full-on time for the 64, full price
games where just starting to come in, the cracking
groups were going wild. This was the time of triumph
and the 64 was in its prime. For me personally it
meant swapping some disks and being totally unknown.
So I only remember vivid things not knowing much
about how the scene worked, apart from what I keep
from swapping in those times I'd like to remember the
fact that this was the most exciting time for me in
scene, and then the coming 2 years. Now it is as some
would view it including me a job, a service to provide
to the scene with something, giving something back to
our heritage.

1989...

1989, from memory Turbo Outrun and girls where the
only things on my mind, part from releasing the first
ever papermag of my life... Toilet Paper ...Which was
originally planned to be called as my mag is now...
Vandalism News, thank god it wasn't. Australians
where actually getting a small kind of respect, until
certain europeans got more and more advanced with
our great machine.
Daw of Triad was my favorite coder, there was begin-
ing to be a federation against Omg/Amok as his words
in the famous Sex'n'Crime magazine where offending
lots. They were even accussed of cheating the charts
to make Genesis Project #1. Of course they always
showed the votesheets. Omg attacked Sys/AFL'70
with tear gas at Venlo.

1990...

The plannings of Vandalism where laid, and sent into
construction, but not actually arriving until early 91.
Rock & Role, Script, Brutal Recall, Mamba, Bild Zeitung,
Remark, and some other mags where ruling and crazy
like hell. No where near as professional as today, but
still the best thing to be invented although the scene
public was always complanning about there being to
many mags in the scene. I don't think by looking at
today, anyone actually took any noticed or cared. As
mags lasted long since.

1991...

Vandalism News issues 1-4 hit the shelfs. Sanforzied
came out for the first time. Electric/Extend drew an
awesome logo for the magazine Script. Gamers Guide
started (right?) and was becomming very popular.
Crest, Bonzai, Megastyle, Light Paradize, Triad, Nato,
and many other names could be seen high in the demo
charts. Moron/Paradize a.k.a. Moren of Success+Trc
nowdays, was the number one swapper also got caught
with drugs. Venlo was still going, but dying out.

1992...

This year I was fucking lazy, although I did manage a
few issues of Vandalism. I wasn't in a position to pass
judgement on anything this year.

1993...

I got a modem, called Divine Ultermatium, Purgatory,
Down by Law, and many other cool boards.
Things changed, this year. I joined Success, ran up a
fucking huge phone bill because of being young, and
naive. Broke up with my girl friend, started with a new
girl friend whom I am still with now. (she'd killed me if
I didn't mention that!! Jesper calls her Screamie :)).
(If you have ever chatted with Matt on the phone and
listened to her playing games (what else!!) in the
background, you would know why - bk!!)
Jazzcat first entered the scene, Bizarre and Night-
shade fought it out in the swapper charts for #1.
Close by, Code 18 followed them, not fogetting Baze,
Derbyshire Ram, Calypso, etc, etc the names go on.
The Pulse hit the news stands in a big way. The best
magazine back then by far.

1994...

I quit and rejoined Success, but only rejoining the
co-op, but still only on the Success side. Vandalism
dropped the Australian aspects, and went board based
Issue #14 was the chaning point. Steve of Avantgarde
returned to the scene. The Pulse slowed down and
stopped coming out. Marking a slow market for some
months to come.

1995...

What have we seen this year? Well it has been quite a
good year infact. Looking at the scene from a glance,
things of old have comeback Light, Msp, just to name
2. Magazines are now at there strongest, never have
we before seen such excellent magazines, Relax,
Skyhigh, Propaganda, the return of The Pulse, Domi-
nation, etc etc the list goes on.
The boasting on the boards. Arrogant behaviour,
corruption in the scene etc etc, it still reflects as
a good time in the scene why? Well, I'm not saying the
scene is going to die or anything but I still have the
feeling these are the golden years on the c64... And I
intend to stick them out.

Vengeance/Onslaught
Giving you time to reminiscence.
See you in the pages of Vandalism News.
