New page

64 CORNER

JOYSTICK PORT 2

SCAN LEFT/RIGHT

SPACE to return to main menu

HOW do i install an 8/9 SWITCH in my
DISK DRIVE?

if you have a old style 1541 drive,
open it up and scan the board for a
CIRCULAR PAD labled j1. in most cases
you will find it toward the front of
the board just in front of the large
40 pin chips, in the centre.

you will note that the pad is SPLIT
into two parts with a small track
connecting them. CUT the track with a
sharp blade and connect a wire to each
side of the pad. connect the other
ends of the wire to a on/off switch
and mount the switch in your case.

when the switch is turned ON the drive
will be a number 8. OFF will turn it
into a number 9.

you must either RESET the drive or
switch it OFF and ON to change devices
after you change the switch direction.
this will allow the drive to reset
into the desired drive number.

if you own a new mark 2 disk drive,
all you have to do it trace the tracks
on the BOTTOM of the CIRCUIT BOARD
from the device switch and make your
own connections. this will allow you
to install a 8/9 switch in a more
desired position.

HOW do i install a RESET button into
my disk drive?

first obtain a momentry on RESET
button.

now look on your circuit board. you
will find a 40 pin chip labled 6502.

now on one end of the chip you will
see a NOTCH. connect one wire to the
pin to the RIGHT of the NOTCH on the
end of the chip. this is pin 40.

another wire should be connected to
EARTH. the best place on the older
1541 drives is on the '-' MINUS side
of the rear LEFT capacitor.

on a 1541 mark 2 drive, look at the
TRACKS on the OUTER edge of the board
and follow them through. you will find
that they are EARTH also. connect the
second wire to a point that connects
to these tracks.

connect the wires to your PUSH BUTTON
switch and mount your switch into the
case.

when ever the drive light is flashing
you can. use the reset button to RESET
the drive.

you can also use reset when changing
8/9 devices.

HOW do i install a READ/WRITE switch
in my disk drive?

obtain a on/off switch.

open the case of the drive and look
at the CARRAGE. (the mechanical part
of the drive that holds the disk).

on the left/front of the carrage, you
will notice a small CIRCULAR device.
this is positioned at the place where
you disk is normally NOTCHED.

connect two wires to the TWO wires on
this device and the also to your
switch. install the switch in your
case.

now to use the READ/WRITE SWITCH, turn
it on and when you write or copy to a
disk and the disk is write protected,
the drive will WRITE to it.

when the switch is off the drive will
work as normal.

SWITCH OFF when not needed.

thats all folks!!

SPACE to return to main menu
