is of their own seperate opinion, but feel free to express that
opinion without having to express the overall opinion of THE
PULSE MAGAZINE.

Thanks must go to those that helped us in the making of this

NEWS JOURNAL is as always anchored by DUKE, assisted in
the news gathering by CROSSFIRE and MR.WAX.

                                                            -
ACRISE + EXCESS (GER, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Christmas mood was accompanied by the news of a brand
new co-operation. ACRISE and EXCESS decided to merge, and
design what looks to be a positive boost in the productive
scene - at least it seems as if the partnership can only better
both groups.

The merger therefore means, that EPISTULA and the wildly
popular magazine, NITRO, will both be labelled under the
co-operation. Meanwhile, RED ROCK/EXCESS had opened up a
German board, which is named COVERAGE. The board can be
reached at +49-2572-97438.

The co-operation is still very new, and due to this, we were
unable to get an updated memberstatus of both groups.
Hopefully we will be able to uncover one for next months
edition of News Journal.
ALPHA FLIGHT (GER, HOL, POL, USA)
--------------------------------------------------------------

a lot of drama hit ALPHA FLIGHT, as the German based board,
THE ESCAPADE, was closed to to the danger of a police raid.
According to the sysop, XENOX of ALPHA FLIGHT, a close
friend of his, GIZMO/ex.ACCEPT, was caught by the German
police. After searching his home, they found the addresses of
contacts, as well as the numbers for most boards in the world.
This incident has made XENOX close down his board, in an
attempt to lay low for a while - just in case the police should
make a surprise visit.

It appears ALPHA FLIGHT has their problems these days, with
the army claiming the services of IGNORANCE and MARC. The
side was otherwise boosted by the return of SKINHEAD, who
was suspended from the army last month - but with two
prominent members gone for the army, it seems the activity
rate will suffer.
ALPHA FLIGHT (GER, HOL, POL, USA)
--------------------------------------------------------------

But in the midst of all this kaos, ALPHA FLIGHT is trying to
solve a leadership problem, that has occoured with MARC
away from a optimal involvement with the group. A strong
favourite appears to be the Dutch member, STYX, who has
acted very strongly in the name of ALPHA FLIGHT lately.

There was reason for optimism in the slighly shattered group
though, as the oldest American board in the scene today -
HOLIDAY CAMBODIA - is back up again after a system change.
The popular board is not running under the old and well known
RADAR modded C*Base, but in fact a new one created by the
sysop, POL POT himself. But due to the system change, old as
well as new users has to re-apply to get on this board again.

The new number for HOLIDAY CAMBODIA will be listed on the
next page.
ALPHA FLIGHT (GER, HOL, POL, USA)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Here follows the general data concerning ALPHA FLIGHT.

BOARDS     : HOLIDAY INN CAMBODIA XXX - XXX - XXXX
THE EVIL ISLAND XXX - XXX - XXXX
             ESCAPADE +XX - XXXX - XXXXXX

MEMBERS    : ANCIENT MARINER, BLAZE, CALYPSO,
CHOTAIRE, IGNORANCE, MARC, MAX, THE MERCENARY,
POL POT, REAM, SHUZE, SKINHEAD, STYX, XENOX and
ZAPOTEK.
CHROMANCE (GER, HUN, SWE, USA, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The infamous and proud institution from the Eastern scene,
CHROMANCE, is currently undergoing what could be noted as a
face-lift. New members are flocking to the group, that once
again is among the most attractive and glamorous names the
scene has to offer. We will therefore round-up the list of the
new members, who joined up to strenghen the side even more.

The popular German mega-swapper, SPERMBIRD, joined up
with CHROMANCE as his first group. He will remain in EXCESS
though, as his second group. An American from Texas, ZEYEX,
signed with CHROMANCE as a new modem-trader and original
supplier. That is kind of ironic, an American supplying
European originals to a European group. Well, the scene is a
strange place - but wonderful because of it!

                                                            -
CHROMANCE (GER, HUN, SWE, USA, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

It appears CHROMANCE are very interested in strenghening
their overseas connections, at least they managed to add
another North American member to the group. This one being
from Canada, FUSION, who is the co-sysop of the
CHROMANCE WHQ, FINAL GENOCIDE. In edition, he will serve
as modem-trader and board graphician.

Returnng to Europe, the Polish scener, XXL, signed with
CHROMANCE to serve as the co-sysop of the brand new Polish
HQ for CHROMANCE, COUNTY JAIL. Meanwhile CHROMANCE
managed to bring back BLAZE to the side, who had left ALPHA
FLIGHT to sign up with the Polish division of CHROMANCE. It
was just recently LOTUS, an old Polish scener known from
SKYLIGHT DESIGN, returned to the scene to sign with
CHROMANCE as a swapper and graphician. But now his
brother, SAGE, joined as well - as a musician.
CHROMANCE (GER, HUN, SWE, USA, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

We have a correction from our former issue - and other
magazines have reported the same. PETE and LION did not
leave CHROMANCE for the newly built RESOURCE. They are
still members of CHROMANCE, but only as second group
members. But one thing is for certain though, the Polish
member of CHROMANCE, SCATMAN, was kicked out of the
group.

Meanwhile a disturbing story troubled the domains of
CHROMANCE, as KINLEY left PARADOX and sent CHROMANCE
the first-release of the game, MURDER IN THE MONASTERY.
But when CHROMANCE wanted to upload the game onto the
American boards, they noticed to their horror, that the game
had been uploaded just 4 hours earlier by ONSLAUGHT.
According to CHROMANCE this would not be such a big deal,
you win some and loose some, but the particular stunning
CHROMANCE (GER, HUN, SWE, USA, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

effect was caused by the realisation, that the game had in
fact been cracked and released by KINLEY himself. When
MR.WAX later spoke with ONSLAUGHT members, he learned
that KINLEY had changed his mind, and joined the forces of
ONSLAUGHT instead. Oh well, Christmas can do strange things
to you!

F4CG (BEL, ITA, USA, GER, POL, AUS, SWE, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Fantasticly active group, F4CG, has let the Christmas
silence close what has been a somewhat successful year for
the group. While some members were busy with the release of
PROPAGANDA GOLD, although it is not an F4CG production,
others were busy wrappoing Christmas gifts (Argh, I knew
there was something I forgot.. No, false alarm). But wilst
being in a Christmas mood, the Polish fame, MAJA, has built
up a brand new game label with a few others. The new label is
called RELIANCE, and they have already made plans to
produce their first title, BALLZ, which is expected to be sold
to the leading software house in Poland, L.K. AVALON.

Meanwhile we can report, that MOLOCH is still a member of
F4CG - he simply joined 9TH HELL last month as his second
group. There you go. Next page reveals the group data's!
F4CG (BEL, ITA, USA, GER, POL, AUS, SWE, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Although there were no new editions to the group - and no
new boards have been signed to the troup, we will bring you
the numbers and names of F4CG anyway.

BOARDS     : DREAM PARK XXX - XXX - XXXX

MOTIV 8 (DEN, GER, USA, NOR, HOL)
--------------------------------------------------------------

LARRY/MOTIV 8/TALENT PRODUCTIONS announced he will be
joining the army on the 2nd of January in 1996. He stated he
was very unhappy with this, as I presume most people are -
when being forced away from their normal lifes. He will
however still remain active for his groups, but an obvious
decline in his activities can be expected.

As reported earlier, THE FRESH PRINCE, will return to the
MOTIV 8 side after an absense of one and a half year. Many of
you may remember, that he was caught by the police back
then, which forced him away from the scene. He had rid
himself of all addresses to avoid the police from taking them,
and therefore he needs former colleagues to re-contact him.
He will resume his swapping career in the beginning of the new
year, but needs to buy new equipment first. When he does, he
will be added to the MOTIV 8 memberstatus.
MOTIV 8 (DEN, GER, USA, NOR, HOL)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Danish based magazine edited by BIRD, EARTHSHAKE,
might be released under the MOTIV 8 label after all. It still
remains uncertain though, but according to our sources, the
new outfit will be coded by ICEBALL. EARTHSHAKE was
planned to make a surprise return at the Christmas party in
Denmark, but unforseen problems forced the expected return
to somewhere in the beginning of the new year. MOUNT
OLYMPUS, which is sysoped by the editor of EARTHSHAKE,
BIRD, is already running as the official HQ for the magazine.

BOARDS     : IN LIVING COLOR XXX - XXX - XXXX

Spider, Stone, TG-Acme and TMG.
ONSLAUGHT (AUS, DEN, GER, HUN, TUR, USA, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The otherwise tremendous busy ONSLAUGHT, decided to have
a quiet Christmas month, with what according to our sources
appeared to be somewhat of a slow period. But something did
happen though, as the WHQ of ONSLAUGHT, DOWN BY LAW,
recieved a new area code. It will be most practical for those
calling the board with cards, as the previous number was
blacklisted. Therefore there should be no stopping the loyal
callers from dialing the new number, which is listed below.

BOARDS     : DOWN BY LAW XXX - XXX - XXXX
DEAD ZONE XXX - XXX - XXXX

Trouble, Vengeance and Witty.
SCS + TRC (HOL, GER, POL, USA, U.K., etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The leading co-operation is preparing the new year, with the
signing of a few new members, BACILLUS and NECROMANTIC
left CITADEL to sign with TRC+SCS.

Meanwhile the Australian fame, STAKE, decided to leave
ONSLAUGHT to join forces with SCS+TRC. But when everyone
thought this was going to be a slow and merry Christmas
month for the co-operation, the infamous American board -
THE DUNGEON, went down once again. According to the
sysop, THE ALCHEMIST, he forgot to pay his phone-bill again.

Informed sources claim the board is down due to the system
change to OMNI - we will see!

The SCS+TRC data's coming up!
SCS + TRC (HOL, GER, POL, USA, U.K., etc.)

Here follows the important data's for the co-operation.

QUESTION MARK (GER, SWI, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The group everybody is talking about at the moment - unless
I am mistaking, is QUESTION MARK. What is it about or
rather, why is it? These questions cannot be answered by us,
but we can guide you through the latest news from this
group.

It appears CHRIS of QUESTION MARK is not JACK ALIEN of
AVANTGARDE after all. But according to our sources, he is in
fact SUICIDE of AVANTGARDE. Why he does not go by his real
handle in QUESTION MARK - along with the other members,
remains unknown to us all.

Meanwhile VAGUE of LAXITY joined up with QUESTION MARK,
and will operate as a swapper.

MEMBERS    : CHRIS, SPIRIT, SPLASH and VAGUE.
WORLD-WIDE NEWS NEWS JOURNAL
--------------------------------------------------------------

* A bit of LAXITY news reached our newsdesk, as CALAMITY
of CREAM signed with LAXITY as a graphician. Meanwhile
VIOLATOR of ASCRAEUS signed up with LAXITY as well -
although he will remain in ASCRAEUS as his second group.

Here follows an updated memberstatus of LAXITY :
ANGELDUST, CALAMITY, DIDI, DR.DRE, JER, MANIK and
VIOLATOR.

* The Danish swapper and former member of VISION, DISHY,
was spotted calling Danish boards again. According to our
sources, he is expecting to make a comeback in the new year.
But whether it will be with the former VISION members in
Denmark is uncertain. Meanwhile the ONSLAUGHT swapper,
JASON, started calling the American boards. He has been
calling national boards (in Denmark) for a while though.
WORLD-WIDE NEWS NEWS JOURNAL
--------------------------------------------------------------

* The old German group, CYBERPUNX, appears to have
returned to an active role on the C64 again. They just recently
released a game named SUPER ALIENS.

* RAMBO of THERAPY joined up with REPLAY as his second
group, where he will act as a swapper.

* Hungary's most popular (and probably BEST) coder,
CLARENCE of CHORUS, has coded a game called DETECTOR. It
is a MINEFIELD clone, just waiting to be sold.

That concludes this months edition of NEWS JOURNAL, we
hope you have found the report informative. We would like to
encourage you to send us news and reports, all is welcome,
but make sure we have it before the 28th of January. Thanks
in advance on behalf of the staff!

board report

THE BOARD REPORT..................................................January 1996
----------------------------------------
As the X-Mas 1995 party in Fredericia is raging on, it has yet
once more become time for the board report. THE PULSE has
several things to celebrate this time - Not only is this our new
years edition of 1995/96, but it is also our 20th issue aniver-
ssary..

In case anyone should feel an urge to get in contact with me
regarding this chapter, be that either for delivering support,
complain or put your input in my output (YES, I stole that
one from RAY COKES!!! :-) ), then feel free to place a piece of
e-mail to me on the internet on the following mail-address:
C01 AABC.DK, remark the address is new, so write it down!!!
---------
And now, without any further due, let's get the reindeer to run
bezerk and fire off all the fireworks.....In other words, let's get
this show on the road..! -More!-
THE BOARD REPORT..................................................January 1996
----------------------------------------
Early month of December 1995, XENOX/ALPHA FLIGHT could
announce himself as being busted by the german police, which
has resulted in him having to take his board, THE ESCAPADE,
offline for a while... It all however turned out to be a little gob-
lin teasing and he was able to announce his board back online
on December 16th. Further explanation? Well, supposively, this
whole thing started with a friend of his getting busted and his
address were found.. According to XENOX, several more people
should be on the police's list, amongst them, XENOX's flight-
colleque, CHOTAIRE.. Nothing is known yet, but THE PULSE
-WILL- keep you informed. All we can say is - Heck of a X-Mas
gift to get - It only brings my memory back two years thinking
about the X-Mas gift that GREGO and SUSIEUZI received from
the police in Houston, which resulted in the final closing of the
ILLUSION-clan... Sad, but true!.. Best of luck for the new year,
Frank - ..Looks as though you could use it! :-( -More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
1995 was a year with a lot of turbulence to offer.. Like in the
year before, some lamer continued his quest hacking into
several boards trying to format them. Luckily, most sysops
learned their lessons and protected their boards as much as
they possibly could from these pathetic crimes..

Most attacked at this point was THE DUNGEON which was
attempted formatted no less than 6 times, with a few of the
times being successful. Also, as Alchemist had trouble twice
this year paying his phonebill that also resulted in a couple of
cases of the board being taken offline. THE DUNGEON still
remain one of the absolutely best boards in the states, and
one can only hope that 1996 will be a more fortunated year for
The Alchemist and his hq-groups, SUCCESS+TRC, HITMEN and
DEMONIX!
                                                        -More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
1995 was a year where one of the probably most famous
boards was put back online. In the early mists of 1995, DREAM
PARK went back online under the F4CG and AVANTGARDE-flag.
One would hope that this would bring back fund memories in
the mind of sysop, CYBORG, as he is yet again dealing with
many of his old friends, who was in DOMINATORS when the
board was taken offline a few years ago. Like in the past, this
board can only be considered one of the absolutely MOST im-
portant ones in the scene today.

THE EVIL ISLAND was both closed and re-opened in 1995. It
was taken offline due to lacking support in early 1995 but was
brought back to life in the fall of 1995. This was welcomed by a
lot of people, yours truly included, as this board is probably
one of the coolest in the scene today - My vote for best at-
mosphere amongst callers would definately go here! -More!-

----------------------------------------
1995 was to become the breakthrough-year for DEAD ZONE.
Finally after being online for several years, this board long at
last made it to the majors. Becoming HQ for ONSLAUGHT and
their magazine VANDALISM NEWS in the summer of 1995 was
exactly what it took, and this board is now counted as one of
the absolute major boards of 1995. It took a lot of time and
effort, but the sysop, TROUBLE, finally made it! Thumps up! :-)

Not very well liked sysop and hacker in certain crowds, MIZAR
was busted in 1995 for hacking. That ofcourse meant, that his
board INTERTRADE was taken offline only a few days after he
turned the board from being GENESIS*PROJECT and EMPIRE
HQ into being MOTIV 8-HQ. The board is still offline at this
point and one can only hope that 1996 will bring MIZAR some
luck - This guy could really use the break! :-( There has been
NO word from him since month of March! -More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
HOLIDAY INN CAMBODIA faced serious problems in the fall of
1995 as the sysop, POL POT, was forced to take the board
offline due to problems with his software. The board was down
for about a month but luckily POL POT was able to announce
the board back online only now running C*BASE v3.2 instead of
the RADAR Modded C*Base, which was apparently what gave
him his problems! Keep rocking, Dave! :-)

Due to lacking support from its HQ-group, IN LIVING COLOR
was to become shared between MOTIV 8 and HARDCORE in
the summer of 1995. MOTIV 8 have had problems calling out for
some time, which was why sysop, GREGO, decided to take on
an offer from HARDCORE. Only, he didn't wanna remove his
own friends totally, so he decided that the group should be
shared. Highly appreciated, Greg! :-)
                                                        -More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
DOWN BY LAW was much complained about all year through as
it had long periods of being offline due to it being incredibly
easy to crash, and since sysop, MORISSEY, is hardly ever at
his home, the board could be down up to several days after a
crashing until put back online. DOWN BY LAW is still online,
although many people claim the opposite - STILL one of the
best and biggest, one can only hope that these problems will
be solved in 1996, though.. :-)

THE FINAL GENOCIDE, a Canadian board also made its first
step into making it big time in 1995. After running under
another name for a couple of more or less unknown groups,
PANDORA made their comeback and signed it on as their Cana-
dian headquarters. The comeback of PANDORA sadly lasted
shortly, and as they were declared dead, the sysop, DEVIANT,
joined CHROMANCE and took them on as HQ-group! -More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
EDGE OF MIDNIGHT, formerly running as HQ for CHROMANCE
has finally been down for an entire year. According to sysop,
POL POT, the board will be put back up running OMNI 128, but
one could have his doubts as the board was taken offline in
very late 1994 and no one has been any sign of life, what-so-
ever, from the board since then. CHROMANCE, however, is still
seen advertising for the board, so one can only observe....and
hope!

Another board that came from the darkness of absolutely no
regognition was BLUE GALAXY which was signed on in the fall
of 1995 by german group HARDCORE. Evidently, they were not
quite pleased with "only" sharing IN LIVING COLOR with
MOTIV 8, but also wanted a board that they could call TOTAL-
LY their own!
                                                       -More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
Not half as much disturbance happened on the european board-
front, it wasn't however totally quit either..

Swedish FAIRLIGHT-HQ, WAREZ AQUARIUM, still kept its
spot as being the most popular board in Sweden. On the side
of difference, not much happened, except that FAIRLIGHT
decided to share the board with HITMEN as the first sign of
winter stroke.. This board has been running for as far back as I
can remember, and I'd hate to see it closed...I REALLY would!!!

HIGHWAY, CHROMANCE EHQ for approx. 3 years, decided to
take them off and sign on ONSLAUGHT. This however did not
last very long, and sysop, JOYRIDE, was removed from ON-
SLAUGHT. He however still runs his board for NOICE, who've
been HQing on it sideways with CHROMANCE, little did any-
body know, though.. -More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
Early this year, german board THE MYSTICAL PARADISE, was
taken offline due to unknown circumstances. Fortunately, the
sysop, PEACEMAKER, decided to put the board back up in the
fall of 1995, now running as EHQ for re-build group, HITMEN..
This warms my heart, as this board was always the absolute
#1 in Germany when it came to my own personal opinion. Call it
licking butt, I call it telling the truth! :-) Besides, anyone who
have called it will probably agree, so.....!

A bit of trouble on MOUNT OLYMPUS, as the sysop, BIRD, left
MOTIV 8, joined PANDORA and returned to MOTIV 8 a few
months later. Several formatting attemps was done on this
board by a not-so-unknown lamer - We however can not reveal
WHO as we lack evidence. The truth, however, WILL come out
sooner than you think!.. UNTIL such time, the staff has taken
big purcautions regarding the safety of the system! -More!-

----------------------------------------
If a year had to gain a award for being the one where boards in
the most unlikely places was opened, I'm sure that 1995
would be the winner..! -:..

In the exact same month, that being September, THREE (!!!)
boards was opened in places you wouldn't exactly EXPECT a
board to open.. CHROMANCE opened TWO boards in Poland
named COUNTY JAIL and OVERDOSE, while ONSLAUGHT went
to open a board in TURKEY, named MONSTER, which remains
independant although with the support from the rest of ON-
SLAUGHT..
                  ..DON'T GET ME WRONG HERE:
..when I say least expected country to put a board, it's meant
with no harm, only I cannot think of having seen TOO many
people calling out from Turkey - A few more from Poland,
though, but still not QUITE a lot! :-) Things change..!!!-More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
Finally, german board, THE SANITARIUM, went from being HQ
for german group, EXCESS, to being european headquaters for
the re-build PANDORA - As the life v2 of PANDORA unfortunate-
ly last very shortly it was taken off the list again. The future
for the board is unknown, however - Word is that the board is
offline and will be put back in early 1996. Until then, one can
only await an answer.. :-)

Late 1995, THE ESCAPADE, European headquarters of much
acclaimed german group, ALPHA FLIGHT, was closed momen-
tary, as the sysop, XENOX, was sadly busted by the german
police. According to himself, the board will be put online again
some time, but until now, nothing is certain.. As this just
happened this month, more about this can be read in the be-
ginning of this chapter!
                                                       -More!-
                               1995 in review - A flashback!
----------------------------------------
Fall 1995, Holland's absolute #1 board over the last many
years, THE LOST EMPIRE, goes offline, apparently due to the
sysop, GUZZLER/SUCCESS+TRC, loosing his interests in the
C64. Maybe at one hand, one can hardly blame him as he has
been running his board for about 5 years - 2 years for BRUTAL,
and then 3 years for SUCCESS (..and ofcourse later SUCCESS+
TRC when birth was given to this co-op in early 1994!).. We
wish you the best for the future, Koen...Although you probably
won't even be reading this.. :-(

Incredibly controversial board 3'RD REICH, Swedish HQ for
CENSOR DESIGN was reopened this year by the sysop, ADOLF.
According to reliable sources though, this board should be
rather unpopular amongst the few callers that still hangs
around.. One COULD wonder if it has gotten anything to do
with the political messages it sends...MOST LIKELY! -More!-

* THE DUNGEON is currently offline again, due to the sysop,
THE ALCHEMIST, not paying his phonebill..

* EDGE OF MIDNIGHT is still offline and HAS been for nearly
a year. However, sysop, RUG RAT, promises soon to re-open
  his board running OMNI 128..

* THE ESCAPADE has been taken online again, after all the
trouble that first forced it to go offline for a few weeks.
It is up and running again since December 16th.

* EINSTEIN is the HQ of the PC-section of MOTIV 8, but has
been listed here anyhow as it also offers a massive section
  for transferring of C64-wares.. -More!-

* As you might have noticed, MONSTER is located in Turkey,
and we have cathegorized it as a european board, as we do
not know for sure if it is located in the middle eastern part or
the european part of Turkey. Until we are corrected, this is
the way it will remain! :-)

* Pay attention to the new number stated with THE FINAL
GENOCIDE, as it was changed from December 23th.

* DOWN BY LAW is said to be blacklisted by the AT&T, but a
good advice would be to use the alternative area code, that
being 609, instead of 203 when dialing.

                                            ..until next month!!

with GODOT 2 1995 (0.0) a utlility.
Towards the end of the time period they released two
previews, namely IDUNA PRV (0.2) and RED TWENTY PRV (0.4)
Not the usual amount of releases one would expect from this
veteran.
---------------------------------------

nice previews such as LORD MC SUN PRV (0.8) from Cosmos
Designs.
After this came THE PINZ PRV (0.8) from The Lost Generation
released with F4cg.
---------------------------------------
Hitmen: (Ger,Swe) Points: 5.3

also ntsc/pal fixed.
---------------------------------------

The Danish based team started the Christmas month
with BRICK WALL PRV (0.3) from Di-lite Design.

Softdisk Publishing.
To end the month came BOUNCER (2.3) from No Gamas
released on pal.
---------------------------------------
Onslaught: (Aust,Ger,Hun,Den,Usa) Points: 11.5
---------------------------------------
This active group provided the scene with their normal flood
of wares starting with QUOTA (5.6) from Ebes and ntsc/pal
fixed. After this came SPACE ARENA 2 (2.2) already running
ntsc/pal. Then shortly after came BASTARD PRV (0.3) from
Intermezzo. Soon to follow was ACTIONAUT 2 (3.4) from
Softdisk publishing, already running ntsc/pal.
To end the month came SWORD OF HONOUR (0.0) ntsc fixed!!!
Special mention this month would be the great release of
the ntsc/pal version of SWORD OF HONOUR from Onslaught.
Even though only a couple of weeks passed the six month
deadline a still quality release that deserves special mention.

Because certain groups may hold back to the final days of
the December period one may see few wares released.
The remainder wares released this month will be combined in
the next editon of The Pulse magazine.

Lets examine the Christmas of 1995 release lists..

Welcome to the special report on the releases of 1995.
Informations of the first releases are gathered in a yearly
format and then compiled into an overall chart form.

Over the year many controversial situations have taken place
on the American boards, here we replay the years action.
This should be the most correct view of 1995, and may be
used by other editors to use as reference.
The usual monthly release regulations apply here, please
check last issue for informations.

Additional Notes:
-----------
Accept were not included due to their re-releases of:
Latent fusion,Spook,Slaterman and Bomberman, so must
not be considered a reliable first release/crack group.

Sword Of Honour (ntsc fixed) from Onslaught does not recieve
points as its only just outside the 6 month time period, a
special congratulations to their fixer for the hard fixing job.

Pro-Does Pv from Alphaflight was later found to be a demo
part so points were not give for this release.
Ballz Pv from F4cg doesn't recieve points due to it being
a earlier preview than the one released by Alphaflight, they
do not recieve minus points because they proved the Afl
version was a preview version also.

The year of 1995 has seen the return of some older groups
like Hitmen and Trsi who have provided some releases with
other new groups like Onslaught and Hardcore.

As you can see 17 groups qualified this year with over 200
releases.
Next comes the fixing charts, the American scene has
declined drastically over the last year, with only some fixes
from Demonix and Empire.
The Ntsc fixing market is at this stage completely dominated
by the european fixers.

Lets examine the YEARLY FIXING CHARTS of 1995.

+ SATIRICA - THE AUTOPSY OF THE SCENE +
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome back to the domains of SATIRICA. We take pride in
basing out stories on lies and rumours. This means, if there is
something contriversial being spread around about you - feel
safe, that you will be able to read about it here, along with the
rest of the world.

Since the last edition, a lot of people have been sending us
letters and post-cards, as well as notes through the internet.
To those two took the time to write, we would just like to say
"The same to YOU!".

REGARDING SATIRICA,
The stories included in SATIRICA are pure fiction, all of which
are based on a satiric state of mind. We do not want to offend
anyone, but rather pass on a smile in these trying times.
We hope you will enjoy the read. General Editor, DUKE.
                  SATIRICA PREDICTING PARTY EVENTS..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The infamous PARTY 5 is just around the corner, at least
when writing SATIRICA. But not being able to report live from
the party itself, we invited a fortune-teller with her crystal
ball, who will now present us with some of her suggestions,
as to what would happen on the major computer event.

BOD was supposed to make a surprise visit to the PARTY, but
ended up at a farm in Northern Denmark. Apparently he had no
clue it was not a C64 party taking place at the stable, till the
farmer convinced him the pigs were not LEGEND members in
the midst of cracking some food. BOD was releaved, and
chanted - "Ah, so that's why I couldn't shove my disks into
that moving pink disk-drive!!".

                                                            -
CONTINUED..

JCH also announced a surprise visit, although a somewhat odd
one. According to the fortune-teller, JCH seized the
speaker-room for the party hall, and played some of his less
popular tunes all night. When the police finally forced the door
to the speaker-room, they were able to disarm JCH of his
music-disks. "I'll be back" chanted JCH while laughing
hysterical. Before he was dragged into the police-car, JCH
managed to hollow "Speaker-room? I don't need no stinkin'
speaker-room" to the appauled crowd watching.

We regret not having more futuristic views for you, as HITMEN
members smashed the fortune-tellers crystal ball. CURLIN
stated "No one is gonna predict what I am gonna break at the
party, let it be a surprise to everyone".
                             NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The most inactive celebraty in the C64 scene, CROSSBOW of
CREST, released a brand new book for the holiday people to
enjoy. "This book is about my expectations for the new year,
and also features my new year resolutions" stated CROSSBOW
to INACTIVE-LIFE-MAGAZINE. Although the book appears to
be rather short - begins at page 230 and ends at page 231, the
public seems to enjoy it immensely.
Especially BOD of TALENT has voiced his enthusiastic opinion
about the book. The book, which had other resolutions, such
as - drink more beers, skip school more often, avoid cleaning
your room and spend more money, is available in all stores
now. "Go buy it, but be careful on abusing your energy" stated
CROSSBOW!

"I feel an EARTHSHAKE coming on!".
THE ALCHEMIST IN A BAD CIRCLE..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The American sysop of THE DUNGEON, THE ALCHEMIST,
appears to be having severe problems with keeping his board
online. He recently suffered problems, with a terrorist - who
was later revealed to be DEFF - kept his board-line busy over
a period of 10 days. "I just know DEFF did it to get DREAM-
PARK more callers" stated THE ALCHEMIST to SCENE RADIO
last week, while complimenting a picture of himself on the
cover of STRANGE BOARDS. But with the recent problems over
with, THE ALCHEMIST ran into new difficulties. Apparently he
neglected to pay his DONUT fee, and therefore his line was
cut instantly. "The Donut people are very powerful. They can
cut your phone-line or even let the air out of your bicycle
tyres!!" stated a shocked sysop. But things are on the way
back into order for the celebrated sysop, who was seen
outside MADONNA's house last week, with a sign stating -
"Will compliment your acting for money!!!".
                          BOD PLAYS CHRISTMAS ELF..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The infamous royal member in the scene, BOD of TALENT,
announced the release of a brand new movie. This will be the
second major picture to hit the cinema this Christmas,
starring the controversial actor and editor of the column -
Balled and Unshaved, featured weekly in NO-LOGIC-MAG.

This latest blockbuster of a movie, will be called "In the name
of Christmas", which according to BOD, will feature him as the
lead character, playing an undercover Elf, assigned to hand
out gift-wraped bombs to unpopular international
personalities, like SADDAM HUSSEIN and others. The movie is
expected to appear at your local cinema some time soon, but
according to BOD, since it is a secret service movie, no one
will know when it will show. "You will be going to see a
different movie, but then it will be my movie showing instead"
stated BOD proudly!

              AMERICAN BOARDS IN CRITICAL STATE..
--------------------------------------------------------------

A tramatic experience happened to the Danish swapper,
JASON of ONSLAUGHT, who was seen calling the American
boards for the very first time. He explained to "Psycho
Boards" how it was a very frightening experience - "There
was no people in sight, I almost had a nervous break-down".

JASON, who suffers from claustrofobia, had never been
vitness to anything similar. "I normally only get
claustrophobic when I am in open spaces, which is what
puzzles me" stated JASON, who will concentrate on calling
Danish boards instead. "At least I know there is someone
around there, instead of some deranged sysop creating an
atmosphere by playing the role of 60 different people on the
board!".
                    SKATER EXPLAINS SHOCK DEATH..
--------------------------------------------------------------

The guest of PROFILE in the New Years Edition, SKATER,
revealed in an exclusive interview, the reasons for deciding to
stop editing the infamous magazine, SHOCK.

Apparently he had problems with collecting the neccessary
contributions for the editions, and due to this, he remember
once having to interview a local swapper - simply because
famous people within the scene, has a tendency of not doing
interviews for magazins in time.

"I recollect a guest I had on a few years ago, and I just felt
for me personally, that I had hit rock-bottom" stated SKATER
to PROFILE, and showed us part of the controversial
interview.

JOIN OUR GROUP - AND WE WILL KICK YOU..
--------------------------------------------------------------

Ladies and Gentlemen, gather around the family, as it is once
again time for "Join our group - and we will kick you". As
always, it will be hosted by HAIN - celebrated group joiner
from the 90's.

We start off with a tie between AVANTGARDE and
ONSLAUGHT, it appears to be very close. But wait a minute,
ONSLAUGHT has just signed on 4 members - what a
magnificent move. Now we are waiting for the next move by
AVANTGARDE, and it appears they have found a solution -
DEFF has recovered 6 famous sceners from the mid 80's, and
AVANTGARDE are ahead.

But the race is still quite close, and ONSLAUGHT is trying to
figure out their next move. Oh my god, latest news just in -

them the front-runner. But what is this? I just heard
ONSLAUGHT accidentally kicked 3 members, and nobody
seems to know the reason - not even ONSLAUGHT. What will
happen next, this is too exciting.

While waiting, we have heard a rumour, that AVANTGARDE is
planning a co-operation with SCS*TRC, MOTIV 8 and
FAIRLIGHT - and should they succeed in making this splendid
move, they will undoubtedly become the biggest group in the
scene.

But I am afraid we have run out of time, but before I go, I
would just like to answer BOD's question, and say - No, a
one-man group cannot be considered a strong candidate for
the biggest group award of 1995. Till next time, I am HAIN -
CAN I JOIN YOUR GROUP - of F4CG.

+ THE SCENE ILLUSTRATED OPINION POLLS +
            -------------------------------
OPINION POLL # 1
------------
The year of 1996 has already begun. What do you plan on
contributing with to make it a better C64 year?

1. I plan on doing nothing - I am bored with this.

2. I will continue on the same path, doing what I have time
and need for. Nothing special because it is 1996!

3. Oh yes, I plan on going double-up on my activities, and try
to get the best out of the scene.

4. Argh.. I am already tired from my activities in 1995, I plan
on taking a break on the heavy activities in 1996!
OPINION POLL # 2
------------
The quality of the magazine charts have been questioned by
several magazine editors. What is your opinion about the
general voted charts, in today's magazines?

1. I never read the charts. I have no interest in them!

2. I think they are as they should be. People can vote for
whoever they please, and I will accept it with a happy
    face!

3. The voters should keep track of the new groups and
releases, instead of constantly voting for dead groups and
people. It is time we do something to restore the credibility
    of our charts!

4. I love the charts - I vote like the charts are!
OPINION POLL # 3
------------
There has been a lot of debate whether magazines from the
past, such as SHOCK, MAMBA and ELITE should be inferior to
those of today. What is your opinion?

1. I never read magazines!

2. I think today's magazines have worked up a standard, that
is much higher than that of the former greats.

3. We will never see the same quality as in the beginning of the
1990's. Back then the mags were great! Today they are not
    as good!

4. I think the standard has been constant, which means the
mags of today are equal in quality as back then.

THE PARTY (V) REPORT SCENE ILLUSTRATED
--------------------------------------------------------------

This edition of THE PULSE was released at the world renouned
PARTY in Denmark. This party is the 5th in a long line of
successful gatherings. This one was no different, and it
brought people together once again, to share their common
interest - Computing!

In this event, we will bring you a LIVE report on location -
brought to you by the biased party attenders, THE PULSE. We
will once again claim a party can be held better, and once
again will be slay the arrangers for the crimes they are guilty
of. With no further ado, here follows the report.

WEDNESDAY the 27th of December. That was the date the
party was scheduled to begin, and so it did. I arrived at the
location at 15:00 hours, just like in my old school days. At this
time, the party had already taken off, and endless lines of -
THE PARTY (V) REPORT SCENE ILLUSTRATED
--------------------------------------------------------------

PC's and Amiga's were placed on the tables. YUCK! Oh well,
same procedure as last year. We should have gotten used to
the underdog treatment by now anyway!

Having attended the Herning party in 1993, this location
reminded me a great deal of that event. Almost the same
space, one huge hall - probably some old mob hangout. Next to
the hall, the sleeping hall was located. This one, was neatly
chosen due to its fine and firm concreat floor. I have not had
the pleasure of sleeping in this room yet, and hope I will not
either. Although I am sure I will fall asleep at some hour - this
party will go on for about 3 days, and I have no intension of
pushing my luck. I will have to go in there eventually!

But having the privelidge of releasing THE PULSE at this
party, I will not have the honour of presenting you with huge
THE PARTY (V) REPORT SCENE ILLUSTRATED
--------------------------------------------------------------

in-depth reporting from this party. But have no fear, THE
PULSE will return with lenghy demo-reviews and a full party
report in our next edition. We just figured you should have
a bit of information about this event before that time - in hope
that you will feel really awful about not going. Except for our
friend BACCHUS, the devoted family man, who may have
attended his last event as a C64 loyalist.

In terms of the arrangements here, I suppose they are as
expected. The food is way too pricey, and that really puzzles
me. Having paid 250 DKR to enter the party, they should at
least have lowered the prices on food. It appears the
moms of the arrangers need some plastic surgery - if that was
the case, I suppose the prices were fair enough. Oh well, I am
just sorry for the visitors coming from outside Germany. They
must have fainted when confronted with the Danish "quality"
THE PARTY (V) REPORT SCENE ILLUSTRATED
--------------------------------------------------------------

prices. But I guess loyalty towards fellow freaks is one thing,
a healthy finance another.

In general I would have to rate this party as the absolute best
in the world. I have not heard of any other event attracting as
many freaks at one occasion - and as established names on
the PC, Amiga and the C64 of course. But I wish the arrangers
would have divided the 3 computers into sections, this way
we wouldn't have to walk miles to see our friends across the
hall. But hey, according to the arrangers, they were
understaffed. Good excuse, especially considering the big load
of money they are currently guarding.

Moving onto more interesting things - Who showed up? It
would be a lot easier for me to name those that did not - about
99% of the scene. But those that DID find time - and money -
THE PARTY (V) REPORT SCENE ILLUSTRATED
--------------------------------------------------------------

to show up, deserves thanks on behalf of the future
developments (or survival) of the ancient C64. I have not
cruised the hall as much as I would have liked to yet, and I am
sure more people will show up later. As stated previously, all
the names and events will be mentioned in detail in our
February edition.

Here is a list of those I did see though : CREST, AVANTGARDE,
MOTIV 8, ONSLAUGHT, CAMELOT, ATLANTIS, REFLEX, NOFX,
NOICE, AMBUSH, ACCEPT, SMASH DESIGN, AMBIENT, NICE,
EXCESS+ACRISE, EQUINOXE, MENTAL, NO NAME, OXYRON,
PLUSH, LAXITY and the F4CG dudes. There was probably more
freaks visiting the party, but due to our deadline, I was unable
to reach to a more complete list. I would have loved to
though, but the arrangers were inable to give us one - even
though we begged for one.
LIQUID '95 Copy Party Report by MR.WAX/CHROMANCE
    ------------------------------------
                 Place:Szekesfehervar/Hungary/Europe
                          Time :1-2-3/December/1995

Welcome you all,

On the following pages you'll be able to witness a very short
party "report" of the LIQUID'95 written by MR.WAX/<C>.
Well, the party was going since friday, the 1st of december but
most of us were working on that day so we decided to go
there the following morning.
After driving like 40 minitues and asking around in town for
some time we managed to find the place which actually was a
big school! A really NICE place,indeed!  :)
After having paid the entrance fee (not the cheapest of them
all but ANYWAY!) we met up with a few familiar faces whose
showed us the C64 room. There we packed out our stuffs and
walked around the place to see what was going on here and
there... Lots of PC and AMIGA users were present as well
since the party was held for C64,AMIGA and PC freaks mainly.
They were advertising it on the INTERNET,too so it looked
like if there were some non-sceners presented as well...
So after having checked around we met up with JAYDEE/<C>
who had arrived with the RESOURCE gang as they live close to
each other! Well,in the afternoon most of the people were
working on their demoes like RESOURCE and PROFIK did.
It was real funny to watch how hard PROFIK were working on
there contribution. Especially that PROFIK were born as a
FAKE demo group but there "Mergezo Anyag" demo serie
turned out to be a big success so they work now for REAL!...
Later some more people popped out so most of the Hungarian
"Elite" groups were present such as : RESOURCE,THERAPY,
PRIDE,CHORUS,PROFIK,LEADER,BREEZE and not to forget
the mighty CHROMANCE!  :)
The rest of the day went like listening to some good musics,
boozing with old friends or working on the contributions...
Around midnight the DEMO COMPETITION took place but I
just can't say too much about it as we were far too boozed to
remember that event...  :)
Anyway, here are the results of LIQUID'95:

DEMO COMPETITION/C64:
1.Mergezo Anyag 3/PROFIK
2.Winteractive/RESOURCE

GRAPHICS COMPETITION/C64:
1.PARROT/THERAPY
2.ATY/LEADER

MUSIC COMPETITION/C64:
1.ROY/REPLAY/RESOURCE
2.ANGEE/THERAPY
                                                                                    Flip the page!
I'm awfully sorry but I just can't say any further information
about the party itself. We went out in the town to check out
a local disco called "BAHNHOF" but we never reached our
destination. On the way to the disco the local police had
checked our papers and found "our" fake/old soldier ID's by
accident. So they took JAZZY D and me to the police station
where we had to spend the rest of the night. The next morning
they questioned us and found out we were using those ID's to
(AB)USE public transports for FREE. So after a few hours they
let us go home but we'll be charged for FORGERY!  :(
And when we went back to the party place everybody was
gone except for the organizers who were cleaning up the place
and such...
All in all this party wouldn't have been a bad one but the end
turned out to be the WORST nightmare one could imagine!  :(

Hope you've enjoyed this little party report though...
                                                                                Yours, MR.WAX

+ QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS - ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL +
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to a special feature exclusive to the anniversary
edition of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. This chapter is called
Questions and Answers, the basic idea of this secment, is
asking some of today's sceners a lot of questions about their
scene beliefs.

We hope you will enjoy the Questions - and the Answers our
special guests gives you. We would like to thank everybody
that took part in playing this game :

TRANZIIE/HITMN, MR. SEX/BYTERAPERS, BACCHUS/FLT,
BOD/TALENT, THE SYNDROM/TIA/CREST, D'ARC/TOPAZ
and EDDIE/MOTIV 8.

The questions were made by DUKE - and all the practical work
as editing as well.
1. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SCENE AS IT LOOKS
TODAY?

TRANZIIE : It's one big market, go grab what you like. Come
join the fun.. Strictly data JEMT.. :)

MR. SEX : Slow, but still active.

THE SYNDROM : Kind of inactive, but a lot of fanatics left,
who are able to produce high-quality stuff.. The crackers' job
is one big laugh, though..

BACCHUS : Dead slow! It's more like a family with a common
interest..

BOD : There is not really much of a sceene left anymore, most
people still interested in the 64 that I know are only part
timers as they all have moved onto other systems.
D'ARC : Quite silent, but I think it's just because we've been
silent.

2. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A MAGAZINE?

TRANZIIE : Interesting text.. Backsideofthevotesheet news
I can live without!

MR. SEX : For good articles ofcourse.. Well, sometimes a bad
outfit can ruin it all though.

THE SYNDROM : It's simple : scene-entertainment.

BACCHUS : Good charts is the thing I look for first - especially
collected from several mags to equal out any inobjectivness in
either of the individual charts!

BOD : An original Style!
D'ARC : Lots of text and real opinions. Good GFX and sound is
a plus but not neccessary.

EDDIE : I want to be informed about any kind of news, about
releases, no matter WHO released it, but WHAT got released,
to be uptodate..

3. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A DEMO?

TRANZIIE : DESIGN!

MR. SEX : Well, the overall feeling is the most important, but
as a coder I like to see some impressive coding adapted with a
nice design, music & gfx.

THE SYNDROM : Good music, good design, new effects.

BOD : Originality, and more than anything, good design.
BACCHUS : The combination! Fancy match code which looks
pale is so boring. I KNOW how hard it is to do but that's not a
reason justifying to waste the code on lousy graphics.

D'ARC : Good style, gfx, code. Something else than bigpixel
videoscreen demos or precalculated raytracing.

EDDIE : Nicely designed, maybe even some sort of story? I
like nice'n'wierd logos and other GFX more than always the
same effects..

4. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A GAME?

TRANZIIE : Hardly play, but Design and FUN I guess.

MR. SEX : Hmm, I like mostly complex strategy games which
will give some use for brains.
THE SYNDROM : good design, high playability.

BACCHUS : The game being addictive. The idea must be catchy
enough to attract me at once and keep me playing..

BOD : As long as it is playable I will like it.

D'ARC : Good idea and good playability. Good graphics and
music is plus but not neccessary.

EDDIE : Blood'n'Gore? Ahem, no. Probably a good story,
creating a decent atmosphere, that keeps me interested for
several days and not just played once and put away..

5. WHAT IS YOUR BEST EXPERIENCE IN THE SCENE?

MR. SEX : Too hard to think about the best one..
TRANZIIE : All the get together parties.. Meeting friends is
funnier than a 100 boards - the thing PC/AMIGA misses out on!

THE SYNDROM : Getting a sending from vibrants.

BACCHUS : The premiere of "The Sneakes" where majority of
the Swedish scene from the old days gathered. It was SWELL!

BOD : Too much has happened over the years to pick out one
best experience.

D'ARC : The friends I've got via computer and meeting them
(SkinBarbeque.. the yearly TPZ meeting).

EDDIE : Best experience was to make a trip to the U.S.,
meeting some sceners over there.
6. WHAT IS YOUR WORST EXPERIENCE IN THE SCENE?

TRANZIIE : The utterly lame rookies, trying to run before they
can walk!

MR. SEX : Even harder question.. No, I dunno.

THE SYNDROM : DMC 5.0 being stolen and spread!

BACCHUS : Well; finding that I don't have enough time for
everything I want to do, including cracking games on a regular
basis. Also seeing the market going down.

D'ARC : The accusations at Light-PHA.

EDDIE : Hmm, can't remember any really bad experiences.
Lucky me, eh?
7. WHEN DID YOU LAST FILL OUT A VOTE-SHEET?

TRANZIIE : Some days ago.. I hardly vote, since I find it
useless anyway, finding LEGEND in the top 10 charts :(

MR. SEX : Last year at Tribute '94. Don't remember the name
of the mag though.

THE SYNDROM : Ugh, ermmm, months ago.

BACCHUS : I have filled in a few, but it's been quite some time
since. I don't consider myself being qualified to do it, as I
know so few of the "coming" crews..

BOD : A couple of years ago.

D'ARC : Gosh.. 2 years ago.. before I left for the army.
EDDIE : Votesheets? What's that? Hmm, loooong time ago!

8. WHAT PART OF THE SCENE DO YOU LIKE THE MOST?

TRANZIIE : The Parties, the fun. Friendship and when you are
having the times of your life, all having one interest -
COMPUTING!

MR. SEX : Meeting friends at the parties.

THE SYNDROM : Demogroups.

BACCHUS : Friendship. In fact internal parties is really cool.
FairLight 64 consists of GREAT pals and meeting them is cool.
I always tend to miss kewlies on big parties and that sucks!

BOD : The BBS scene as it was around 2 years ago.
D'ARC : The "underground" movement is still on.

9. WHAT PART OF THE SCENE DO YOU HATE THE MOST?

MR. SEX : Hmm.. hard to say, maybe I don't really hate
anything.

THE SYNDROM : Cracker cracking games I would still get
money for.

BACCHUS : Shit groups releasing fast cracks that don't work,
but who don't care as they were first! I'm a quality kind of
guy, who takes pride in my work!

BOD : There is not a part I really hate.

D'ARC : The silence.
10. WHAT PART OF THE SCENE DO YOU MISS THE MOST?

TRANZIIE : Days when the scene expanded by the minute.
Back in 90/91.

MR. SEX : Swapping, I think.

THE SYNDROM : The competition to get into the charts -
these days you spread vote-sheets and are in..

BACCHUS : Quite a few of the old friends who went to do
something else; SPITFIRE being one I think of directly. I kind
of get the feeling I assume old people get when their friends
die. I kind of regret not starting out earlier than 1985!

BOD : The releases of course.

D'ARC : Some really big groups like IKARI+TALENT.
EDDIE : Is there anything missing? Haven't noticed yet!

11. WHAT QUALITIES HAS YOUR SCENE CAREER GIVEN YOU,
THAT CAN BE OF USE LATER IN YOUR REAL LIFE?

TRANZIIE : NEVER buy anything but pirated software's.. :)
It has given me a new way to look upon things, learned me
what it takes to organise things..

MR. SEX : No doubt, a lot of experience in coding which is very
useful as I study in technical university.

THE SYNDROM : Improved knowledge of English.

BACCHUS : Dedication and a basic computerknowledge, that
made me pass some examines at the uni. That was probably a
MAJOR plus for getting the current work I have and love!
BOD : There is not a great call for 64 crackers and coders
these days :) Haha..

D'ARC : The way I think. You don't have to code everything in
slow C, optimisation knowledge, the fact that you can do
almost everything on small machines that others do on big
machines.

12. WHAT HAS YOUR SCENE CAREER DONE TO YOUR LIFE
THAT YOU REGRET TODAY?

TRANZIIE : Might be the stamplicking days as a swapper..
Missing out weekends due to swapdiscs.. Seldom happened,
but it DID :)

MR. SEX : Nothing really..

THE SYNDROM : Made me addicted too much some years ago!
BACCHUS : I can't say that it harmed me in any major way! I
passed school with good enough grades to pass on.
Sometimes I perhaps spent too much time on the commie and
put things at risk, but then again I didn't blow it so I'm not
complaining.

BOD : Nothing that I regret. The Scene brought me friends.

D'ARC : Many sleepless codefilled nights :)

EDDIE : Nothing. Actually I haven't done anything so far that I
have to regret.

13. WHEN DO YOU PREDICT THE C64-SCENE WILL COME TO
AN END?

TRANZIIE : NEVER!
MR. SEX : Hmm.. It will become slower and slower, but
hopefully it will never die.

THE SYNDROM : When all sceners stopped their activity on
C64.. quite unlikely it will ever happen.

BACCHUS : Will it ever? If you have an election and one person
votes, it's still an election! Where's the limit for it being a
scene? There will ALWAYS be freaks..

BOD : People have been predicting the end for a couple of
years. It is a very hard answer to predict.

D'ARC : You should answer never, but you never know. We
hope that the eastern part of the world would give new life to
the C64. Go CHINA!
EDDIE : When the last C64 breaks down, and everyone left for
reasons I can't see.. But as long as there are a few guys out
tjere still doing something, it will survive, in which form ever.

14. HOW MANY SCENE-PARTIES HAVE YOU ATTENDED, AND
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THEM?

TRANZIIE : A LOT.. all this year.. X95, internal meetings aso..

MR. SEX : About 10. I just love them, especially the ones
where boozing is allowed :)

THE SYNDROM : 6 parties.. they were all Great, some more and
some less.. but without them it only would be less fun!

BACCHUS : Well a dozen bigger ones I guess! Slagelse 1989
was the best as I then met lots of the kewlies for the first
time. MARIO VAN ZEIST, someone from 1001 CREW -
HOBBIT, the FairLighters, HZ, IKARI, K12 and lots of others.
Nothing since has been that good, but I guess that has
depended more on me than the parties. Hills are bigger when
your smaller, if you can see what I mean!

BOD : I only ever went to 2 scene parties in my time, but they
were both great.

D'ARC : 4-5... Great places to meet people and see them alive.

EDDIE : 4 or 5. Hey, they are a good opportunity to meet some
guys you only know from mailing..

15. DO YOU PLAN ON PARTICIPATING IN ANY PARTICULAR
SCENE PARTY THIS YEAR?

TRANZIIE : X96, TP5.. Where you meet friends a.s.o. Party's
are a MUST!
MR. SEX : Hmmm.. as the year is almost over I dunno if I will
visit any. Maybe one Finnish PC party if it will be arranged and
TP5 if I have enough money at that time.

THE SYNDROM : Yes, I will go attend the party 5!

BACCHUS : Yepp, an internal party. Don't know about the
Party 1995 yet. Being a father makes it far more complicated
leaving home.

BOD : Definitely 1 party in the next year, but I am undecided
which one.

D'ARC : Something has been thought, but first we have to do
the demo ready. Still under construction.

EDDIE : Yeah, certainly, TP5 is a must, eh?
16. WHAT FORM OF COMMUNICATING METHOD DO YOU
PREFER, WHEN TRADING AND COMMUNICATING WITH SCENE
FRIENDS?

TRANZIIE : Phone, whatsoever.. Still, meeting up face to face
is what I like the most..

MR. SEX : Internet is ofcourse the most easiest way, but
there is always use for snailmail and phonecalls, because not
everyone is in net.

THE SYNDROM : The Internet, voice. If neccessary, snailmail!

BACCHUS : Trading; disks per mail but I do E-mail, phone, IRC,
fax and whatever is available. Phone is best of course!

BOD : Communicating via boards, net, etc. Mail trading is too
slow!
D'ARC : Snailmail! It's the way that really cheers you up after
a hard day. Email and other net-ways are a bit too easy. You
don't get the 'swap feeling'.

EDDIE : Fast'n'cheap is emailing, even faster would only be
calling, but not cheaper :) Therefore I prefer emailing, on
which net whatsoever, Internet, Fidonet..

--------------------------------------------------------------

That concludes this special edition of Questions and Answers.
My thanks to everybody that took part in this word-game, it
was nice that they dared reveal their thoughts with us.

Questions and Answers may return another day, but will not
be added to THE PULSE as a regular feature. But once in a
while there are Questions that simply needs Answers. Then
we will return - with a brand new pack of QUESTIONS and
ANSWERS. We will see you then!

WORLD OF DEMOS
--------------------------------------------------------------

Right after christmas your favourite WOD-team is back to give
you the latest information available on the demo-market.
This time World of Demos is produced live at The Party 5,
though you won't find any reviews of the partydemos yet. We
will keep those for the next issue of The Pulse.
If you've ever been to The Party you know the feeling, the
noise and everything - we apologize for any grammar mistakes
caused by that noise, not to forget that we all are very tired...
Anyway, the program for December looks like:

1. Hallucinations/Albion
2. Mergezo Anyag 3/Profik
3. Winteractive/Resource

The Staff remains unchanged being Mr.Sex, EQ and Syndrom...
Hallucinations/Albion
-------------
MR.SEX about the code,
okey, this time we start with a polish demo which is from
quite an unknown group. Hmmm... I probably have seen only
one demo from them before...don't know really...
This demo starts with some very nice design effects which
makes the journeyto the first real effect smooth. And the first
effect is VECTOR TUNNEL, which is showed in 16*16 character
area. The routine is quite fast and looks good, because it even
rotates instead of normal x&y-movement. Anyway, in my
humble opinion the tunnel effect will somehow loos the
capability to impress if the effect isn't very big.
Next effect to come is a LENS over a hires picture. Nothing
major original or impressive, but it still makes it to entertain
before the next effect. That is a hires texturemapping in the
form of erhm... so original cube :)
It rotates only around Y-axis and is probably animated, but
still nice. Next to come after another hires picture is a
greetings list displayed over a FILLED VECTOR CITY. Well,
this one is high and fast but very simple. Okey, it goes away
and then it's time for a little rain and for a bouncing and
zooming BALL. Again nothing new or big, but still quite ok.
After a while some kind of joke a screen comes in, showing
someone's fave number and there is a x-sine wave effect in
the background. Well, the loading continues and then a
CHESSBOARD ZOOMER comes in. This one is done with all
borders open, but still quite typical. Anyway, a better one is
the GRAVITY DOTS routine in the next part. Well, I shouldn't
call it gravity, but you know the idea. Dots start to fly up from
the bottom of the screen and finally fall down. Looks ok. Next
you are able to see a nice IFLI pic and then a wireframe vector
routine which has a chair object. This is done with reasonable
speed, but nothing very original or impressive, because the
same has been done again and again during many years.
Another line routine is coming up, and this is a filled
MORPHING routine. The display are is big and that causes
some slow down of the screen update rate.
Nothing else left but the end part with an upscroller and a very
nice picture. Hmmm... this demo is very nice and I enjoyed to
watch it. Most of the routines are nothing very original, but
with a good design they have been made to look good...

EARTHQUAKE about the graphic,
The intro-picture was done by Jetan and in my opinion it
belongs to one of the best logos painted in Koala ever. The
outlines are interesting but remind me of the style of Cruise.
After a charset-based "presents"-logo flying over the screen
the show continues with a scrolling 2-screens-wide
Halluzinations logo. The style looks familiar to the one
previously seen. It seems that painting that specific piece
took a lot of effort. Another hires artwork is shown one part
later. It shows a kind of a fantasy scene and it is one of the
best hires-artworks I guess. A warrior smashes a skeleton,
what causes some crushed bones. The picture looks like a
stopped motion. The painter included many details and
performed an extremely good pixeling. Just because of the
lens-effect in this part you can admire how well the picture
was done. A hires picture gets displayed in the next part
aswell, but it is of lower quality than the picture before. It
shows a big-nosed guy, who looks like a smith. After this part
we have to watch another non-colorful picture. It maybe
shows King Kong but rather looks funny than cool. The creator
surely did the best he can, but I don't like it at all.
After all that grey stuff it is a pleasure to watch a very
colorful IFLI-picture. It shows a mad car(?)driver, who seems
to fear something he sees infront of him. The good usage of
the colors causes very little flickering. This image looks quite
realistic and keeps the high graphical standard of this
production. As a last picture we have one in an exotic format
called SuperHiresInterlace. The motive is a woman infront of a
sunset. Unfortunately it flickers more than it should which
gets annoying after some time...

SYNDROM about the music,
The first noise you hear in this demo already gives you an
impression of what to expect: C64-techno !
But ok, if people dare to do this... The instruments are ok, and
the music is listenable... but at all - nothing else but simple...
Well, there is one passage where MOOG's talent flashes
through - some chordmodulations, which are quite nice...
Too bad for the demo that the tune is looped too early, and a
big one is the lack of music in the end-upscroller....
Overall: boring, but stompy...

MERGEZO ANYAG 3/PROFIK
------------------
MR.SEX about the coding,
Okey, again a demo from Profik. This one starts again with a
starwars scroller giving some info. And then a loader like in
Comalight 12 comes in and waiting for the next effect has
begun.
The first effect is a ROTATE TWISTER in 4*4 FLI resolution
with a kind of 3d sinus like in WOC3. Well, first it shows some
twisted colors and then a head zooms in and starts rotating.
This part looks nice eventhough the area is about 20*20 chars.
Especially sine movements have been well chosen and the
routine is quite fast.
Next effect is a TEXTURE GLOBE familiar from Oxyron's
demos. This runes also in 4*4 resolution and is fast enough.
Well, nothing to add, so lets move to the next effect which is
surprisingly not in a FLI mode, but in hires. This is a fllled
tunnel in an area of 16*16 characters. The routine is fast, but
imho (ed. in my humble opinion) not very good looking. Anyway,
soon there comes another tunnel. Now it's a TEXTURE
TUNNEL which uses mirroring. This is very sane as in Oxyron's
LAMENESS RULES demo. First it shows some faces as
textures and later some colordata.
Again we have a part familiar to same demo. This is a
TEXTURE MAPPING routine which is indeed a faster one than
Oxyron's. Well, the object is ahh... so original cube, but the
speed is reasonable for C64. Questionable is only whether it's
fast enough or not. The final part before the end is a lens
routine. This is done over a 4 colored picture and two lenses
are used. Because they are not just zoomlenses it looks kinda
nice. Yep, the final part is some text and a raytraced
animation.
All in all I liked this demo a very lot, but unfortunately I can't
watch it a lot because it doesn't work with a JiffyDos. Uhh...
too bad I would say, as I'm not going to swap chips always
when watching demos. Well, also all routines are very
familiar from some other demos... so I will give

75 % for coding...

EARTHQUAKEabout the graphic,
The demo starts with a 3-dminesional fullscreen logo. The
outlines and the fillings are boring and have often seen before.
Next the real intro starts with the presentation of the demo's
name by using charset logos. This doesn't look innovative.
Another profik logo hits your screen but it's also quite old
fashioned. The outlines were used many times before. It's the
same with the next logo used in the rotating sphere part. The
only interesting thing is the usage of a shade, but it is as
innovative as the following ones. Somehow it seems, that all
logos appeared with other letters in other demos before. The
grafician should use more of their imagination and creativity to
show what's really possible on the old C-64. It also would
have been much more interesting to see atleast one good
picture in this production. In my opinion Profik presented their
name too often in low originality.

SYNDROM about the music,
Grrr... another demo containing techno-music. I slowly feel
getting bored with it. Especially if it is that crappy like in this
demo. The instruments sound like made years ago, and the
music itself has absolutely nothing to it... The only positive
thing is that it doesn't get looped until the end-part...
In that one we get to hear a new music, which is obviously
quite different in style... Unfortunately it is no special or good
at all, and the player contains a neat bug in the vibrato, as it
swings the not-dividable-by-2 values one step more up than
down and this lifts the main-frequency of the note up and
makes the music sound detuned...

WINTERACTIVE/RESOURCE
------------------
MR.SEX about the coding,
Well, I have never heard anything from this group (have to
admit that I haven't looked in news for quite a long time,
though :) so it was quite a nice surprise to see something from
them...
The demo starts with a nice CYBERVECTOR routine, which is
actually just a normal filled vector routine, but the
characterset is arranged so that it looks weird when the
edges of the planes get mixed. More vectors are to come and
soon there comes a cube which is splitted so that the upper
part is filled and lower in wireframe. Suddenly there come
ZEBRAVECTORS, where two objects are being mixed. This
technique is simple as the objects just use the every second
line, but looks cool. Anyway, those vector routines are fast
enough. Not the fastest ever though, but they serve their
purpose very well.
Next one is a loader part with IFS fractal in hires. Well,
nothing impressive, but after loading there is once again some
vector-stuff. This time there is a RUBBERLINE cube, which is
again reasonable fast. Okey, next part is a protest against
nucleartests. There is a radiation warning sign vector object,
which is presented agin with wireframe technique. Now when
the object is concave and hiddensurfaces are removed they
have precalculated it. There is also a scroller giving some
propagandist text.
After a while there comes a 4*4 routine, which is actually an
ANIMATION of a rotating clown. Rotating is smooth, but the
Lens which moves across the animation doesn't look very
good. it looks more like a bug than a lens.
Next effect after an IFLI picture is a mandelbrot routine which
was actually coded for +4! This routine just displays rotated
and zoomed pictures of a mandelbrot. Quite slow though.
Anyway, that was the last actual effect, because there is
only the end upscroller left. Well, although there was hardly
nothing except vector routines this was quite a nice demo in
my opinion.

EARTHQUAKE about the graphic,
The Resource logo looks funny but unfortunately this kind of
logostyle (usage of different outlines and fillings for each of
the characters) gets more and more out of fashion. The quality
is good for the graphic mode, but I miss some fresh ideas. The
next graphic gets displayed in hires. It's motive is a mystic
landscape with some birds and an errupting vulcan in the
background. It looks like an illustration in an old tale-book. I
like the style alot as it looks different from the mainstream.
The last image of this presentation is a manga-styled hires
picture. The dithering looks strange and in general it looks not
as cool as the original manga pictures in a comic.

SYNDROM about the music,
All the two tunes were made by ROY/REPLAY, a rather
unknown talent for my ears... Anyway, let's start with the
intromusic... I bet it is supposed to be some sort of techno-
music again. There are some interesting base-fill-in's, but one
thing is really annoying: the basedrum. If you ever have to use
$41-waves for the basedrum then atleast use pure $08-pulse
settings, otherwise it sounds really stupid...
Ok, at all I think it was only a warm-up tune, as the next one
proves ROY can do better...
It is a technomusic aswell, but if I say music I really mean it.
So how can music and techno fit together ? Could be only
TRANCE then... And that's exactly what you hear if listening
to the second music (in C64-quality ofcourse)... The harmonies
are actually not very original, but the main-theme contains a
nice ringmodulated effectline... This music was also attending
the music-competition of the LIQUID'95 party in HUngary and
if I'm right it placed itself quite well...

70 % for the music...

* EXCESS and ACRISE went into a CO-OP, which I see as a
good thing for both groups, as it'll give them a better chance
of survival. But, I guess we won't see the results of their
efforts until a couple of issues.

* ATLANTIS, ALPHA FLIGHT and HARDCORE stood for the
falling down this month. Apparently they've not deserved
any christmas-bonus this year, opposite their collegues in
MOTIV 8, who gained a 6th place this issue!

* Huge jump for JACK ALIEN, as he takes the number one
position in glorious style. He is incredibly popular in the
voters opinion, and may appear to stay there into the new
  year. We will see!

* BURGLAR edged by JACK ALIEN, while HAIN is falling
slightly. Perhaps it was time for a few new names to be
introduced to the top of the charts!

* The charts remain very steady - vote for activity guys!

+ MEET THE PRESS - A WORLD OF MAGAZINES +
--------------------------------------------------------------

The media in the scene has profound power to be a positive
influence. This is where we come in, welcome to another
edition of MEET THE PRESS. The section dedicated to take on
the media - the organisers in the C64-scene.

MEET THE PRESS also operates as the official reaction
section of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. We invite you to send us
your thoughts and views, be they positive or negative, about
this magazine. We will print your letters in the next edition,
if they reach us before the 28th of January.

This edition we have a great program for you. We discuss the
year that passed as well as the Chart credibility in THE
MEDIA TODAY. We will also bring you much more - as always
with reviews and other New Years goodies. We hope you will
enjoy the read. General Editor, DUKE, bids you welcome.
THE YEAR THAT PASSED MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

The year of 1995 has passed, and it became a year of many fun
memories, and has no doubt been a most successful one seen
through C64 interest eyes. This year we have been witness to
many events in the magazine industry as well, and this is
what MEET THE PRESS will highlight - as the magazine based
part of THE PULSE MAGAZINE this chapter is.

There is no doubt, a lot of magazine editors will remember the
year of 1995 as the best ever. It was a year of few events in
the other parts of the scene, but the magazine industry has
never been more healthy - as the rising competition has
concluded in better performances throughout the year. There
is now no longer one magazine setting the pace and
standards, now there is up to 6 different magazines, all
qualified in top notch C64 scene journalism.
THE YEAR THAT PASSED MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

But before we look back on the year that passed, let us look
back even further, to the time where the magazines became a
regular and popular edition to the scene. We all remember the
beginning of the magazines on the 64, looking through our
dusty archives, we find genuine oldies like ELITE, MAMBA
and SEX'N'CRIME. Those were probably the most established
names, that began what later burst into an extremely popular
edition to the scene - the industry itself. When asked about
these magazines, most claim knowingly, how those were the
best magazines ever, and how we will never reach that kind of
status again.

But with years of experience in the magazine industry, I have
reached a state of mind, that most definitely disagree with
those statements. The old magazines are in my opinion no
match for those released today, and not even CORRUPTION -
THE YEAR THAT PASSED MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

SHOCK as well as the editions of PROPAGANDA edited by
ANTICHRIST appears as valid competition for the productions
we enjoy today.

I am absolutely sure, that many people will be outraged by
these statements, most definitely the editors of the before
mentioned will be slightly disturbed. But I feel it as a strong
need to come to terms, with what has been a hard period of
fighting a ghost. With this I mean, attempting to achieve the
same type of status in the magazine industry as former greats
like those mentioned before - but without a real chance to be
compared with them. They are dead and gone, and therefore I
have no chance to compete with them on a basis, that would
give the readers a chance to pick the favourites.

I am done fighting the ghost. I put my money on 1995!
THE YEAR THAT PASSED MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

I have found, with a year of excellent magazines as evidence,
that the year of 1995 represents what should rightfully be
remembered, as the year of the best magazine productions.
The release of PROPAGANDA, DOMINATION, SKYHIGH,
VANDALISM NEWS, RELAX and THE PULSE has made the
magazine industry the most powerful section of the C64
scene. The media is as popular and regular as never before.

But please understand me correctly. I am not interested in
putting down those that made this industry, they truly
deserve our respect and recognition, but not on the expense of
the new generation. It would have been ignorant of me to fight
for today's type of magazines, if they did not represent what I
find is much better than those in the old days. But I do find
they are, therefore my attitude.
THE YEAR THAT PASSED MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

The magazines of today, are more or less tailor-made to the
general needs of the modern scener. This means a lot of
ineractive options, debate, statistics, articles, etc. The
magazines produced in the past did not address these needs
as sensitive as the productions of today, and therefore the
readers have developed a most unpleasant tendency of taking
them for granted. The independence of the magazines have
given them more strength and personality in the overall scene
picture, and that has without a doubt increased its value.

The year of 1995 has created more profiles than any year
before. It appears the most popular magazines, which all are
released on a regular basis, are thriving on the competition
they give each other. In the past, the competition often
resulted in wars and hostility towards each other, but
ironically enough, today's media picture represents a -
THE YEAR THAT PASSED MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

totally different situation. Due to this, we are witness to
healthy competition - without excessive use of bad language
against each other, and the competitors extend helping hands
and even greet and compliment each other. What could be
better!

No wonder the magazine industry is doing so well. But maybe
the answer to the happy faces can be found when looking at
the magazines. 1995 has been a year of anniversary fever, THE
TRIBUNE released their 50th edition - which makes them the
most released magazine in the history of disk-magazines.
VANDALISM NEWS released their number 25 - and therefore
celebrated what they called "The Silver edition". But what
was odd about VANDALISM NEWS releasing their silver
edition, was the fact, that PROPAGANDA released their 20th
edition - which they called "The Gold edition".
THE YEAR THAT PASSED MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

But let us not ponder on that, even though 25 in my book is
silver, and 50 is gold. Maybe it is just a media-thing - always
trying to make things look more glamorous than they really are
(I love it!). Moving onto other anniversary celebrations,
SKYHIGH was another magazine that put out their 20th
edition. This magazine concentrating on the demo-scene
though, which probably makes it the most released demo-
related magazine around. But that is merely speculations, fact
is that SKYHIGH managed 20 editions - all of them of sky high
quality. If we have to be cute!

The last magazine, but not least, which was celebrated, is in
fact the copy you are reading right now. That is correct, the
20th edition of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. The comeback in June
1995 accumulated up to this glorious event, and all of us at
THE PULSE are quite proud of this achievement.
THE YEAR THAT PASSED MEET THE PRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------

But the down side to events like these, are the futuristic
perspective of having to do 20 more - not very likely. At least
it seems much easier to just take one edition at a time.

The year of 1995 is gone, and we bid it farewell. Let us
welcome the new year, 1996, with open arms. I am confident
it will bring us as many happy times and events like the one
we have just left.

But then again, it's all up to YOU!
THE MEDIA TODAY CHART CREDIBILITY
--------------------------------------------------------------

The trustworthiness of the magazine charts is once again
being questioned, as respected magazine editors ask the
much debated question - Do the charts really reflect the true
opinion of the scene?

It appears for the experienced scener, that the charts rarely
tells a tale of who is the best in the scene today. We have
developed into a scene of people, where the phreakers rarely
vote, the elite circle of musicians, graphicians, coders and
crackers seldom vote - and they are more qualified than any.
That could be the core of the problem the charts are facing,
and that has left a dark cloud over the magazine charts for
some time. It has also created a bigger problem, as it seems
the celebrated people in the charts do not value their
appearance as much as they used to. The general opinion of
the talented sceners is quite indifferent, as they feel they -
THE MEDIA TODAY CHART CREDIBILITY
--------------------------------------------------------------

cannot trust the charts as mirrors of the true scene opinion.

Two top notch magazines, PROPAGANDA and VANDALISM
NEWS, attempted to reach their readers in the last edition of
both magazines, with an article tutoring the voters on how to
vote. Both magazines were clearly unhappy with the incoming
sheets, where most voters had voted for groups, persons or
magazines, that were either dead and gone - or had been
inactive for a very long time.

PROPAGANDA made it very clear, how dissatisfied they were
about the incompetence of most voters. In an article entitled
"Idiots cannot vote" written by WALKER, he stated
PROPAGANDA would no longer accept vote-sheets with bad
voting, which means the end of voting for SHOCK, LEGEND,
FALCO PAUL, GOTCHA and other dead C64 creatures.
THE MEDIA TODAY CHART CREDIBILITY
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Advertisement section in PROPAGANDA, which has
become very popular, with more than 100 sheets this edition,
will be edited by WALKER the very last time. He made his
farewell appearance as editor in the 20th edition, as he will be
joining the Swedish army in the new year. the WANTED
chapter will be taken over by INTRUDER of AVANTGARDE, who
is one of today's most popular swappers.

The majority of the people in our scene today, have all tried
filling out vote-sheets - many of us have probably done
hundreds. We should therefore believe, that the majority have
also come to terms with the hassles of voting - and how to do
it in a correct manor. Unfortunately it would appear, that the
reason for the bad voting is a result of laziness from the
voters. A most unlucky trend has infiltraded the minds of the
voters, making them copy their sheets off the actual chart -
THE MEDIA TODAY CHART CREDIBILITY
--------------------------------------------------------------

status of the magazines. This means they do not have to
consider who is famous or active, because the charts should
be a reliable source for this type of statistics.

But it is quite the opposite these days. When a certain group,
person or magazine becomes famous on any sort of work on
the C64, it normally takes up to 6 months, before they are
recognised by the voters. This means the charts should be up
to 6 months delayed on the actual scene status - but even
that is not acceptable. When looking through the charts, we
find groups, magazines and people who have been dead or
inactive for a period longer than 6 months - some even up to 3
years. That is quite frightening, but even worse, the editors of
the charts do not even comment or exclude these voters. They
seem to suffer the same syndrome as the voters - Laziness!
THE MEDIA TODAY CHART CREDIBILITY
--------------------------------------------------------------

If we had to narrow the voters down to one particular group of
people in the scene, it would have to be the swappers. They
are the most frequent spreaders and receivers of the
vote-sheets, and therefore also the general user. But how
come the charts are so inaccurate in terms of actuality, when
the charts are made out of votes from the most active
members of the scene? That would appear to be the most
tricky question, and one without any good answers.

It is possible to come to one simple conclusion though, if we
consider the general voter is a swapper. The most swappers in
the scene today rarely have skills at coding, drawing or
composing. Therefore they are not qualified at voting for any
of the people within these areas of the scene. The reason is
quite simple, they do not know what is difficult and what is
easy, simply because they are not experts on these areas.
THE MEDIA TODAY CHART CREDIBILITY
--------------------------------------------------------------

But with that in mind, it would be wrong to ask for a persons
qualifications before voting. This way, we would come to
some very boring charts, made up by only a few people. The
swappers are the general voter, and it is therefore the job of
every possible candidate for the charts, to make themselves
heard by the voters - and thereby reach the chats in a fair
position. This would be the best solution, one we can all live
with.

But most important however, stop copying your vote-sheet
off the actual chart status. Make it a habit not to have your
computer on when filling them out, this way you will not be
influenced by names on the charts, that have nostalgic
meaning to you - but are not actual or worthy of your vote.
It is always easier to copy than to start a new, but the
shortcut is rarely the best way!

Welcome to the popular MAGAZINE REVIEWS section. The
part of MEET THE PRESS where we take a deeper look at a
few selected magazines, released recently on the C64.

This edition we have decided to concentrate on one magazine
in particular, the 26th edition of VANDALISM NEWS. This
magazines have just recently celebrated its Silver release,
and it is therefore most appropriate for us to take a deeper
look at the day after.

INTRODUCTION
----------
The celebrated magazine, VANDALISM NEWS, which held its
25th edition anniversary last month, is once again back on the
market with another packed edition. It therefore keeps a
popular standard of releasing on a monthly basis, and due to
this, it has risen on the world-wide charts into the very top.
But what does VANDALISM NEWS really offer us as an
informative and entertaining magazine? That is what we will
uncover, in this special review of VANDALISM NEWS, the 26th
edition.

THE OUTFIT
--------
The VANDALISM NEWS outfit remains unchanged for this -
edition, but it appears they have found their style - and
therefore it does not serve as a necessity for them to make
changes on that front in the near future. The next display is
presented with proportional font, something that has grown to
be today's standard in about half of the most popular
magazines. The bottom of the screen represents the chapter
information section, inclyding a menu similar looking to
tape-recorder buttons. Very neat and simple, and serves its
purpose as user-friendly.

The chapter menu is presented with a very beautiful logo in
the top of the screen, neatly done by INSANE of ONSLAUGHT.
The coding is done by SHADES. The 3/4 of the bottom screen
makes up for the actual menu, in which the chapters are
printed on top of a graphic-chessboard.

THE EDITORIAL
----------
Whereas THE PULSE, PROPAGANDA, RELAX and other
established magazines have a wide staff, VANDALISM NEWS
is primarily edited by VENGEANCE and BIZARRE. They have
the desire and the discipline to make it work, and therefore
they can keep up with the fast paced competitors.

In terms of the language used in this magazine, I am not that
proud on words like "fuck" appearing in the articles. I am not
trying to censor anyone, at least I am of the opinion, that
people should speak their mind - be it using primitive words.
But when I am reading an intelligent article, I tend to get
disappointed when I am directed into the gutter. The same
goes for GOP calling the readers "homies". What is this? A bad
episode of BOYS'N'THE HOOD. Well, I am more for ROBIN
HOOD. After all, all primitive language can do for me, is to help
me forget about the serious subject being debated!
THE CONTENTS
----------
EDITORIAL : Edited by VENGEANCE and BIZARRE. The usual
information concerning the magazine, but also fascinating
reading about what concerns VENGEANCE and BIZARRE in the
scene. Both of them have plenty of subjects to discuss,
therefore I do not undersyand why they do not start a debate
chapter - and put the controversy into that chapter.

RELEASE CHARTS : Edited by VENGEANCE. The typical game
chapter, with a round-up of the releases that made it through
November month. The rules and regulations used to make up
the charts, seem to be no business of mine - therefore I will
leave it to you to make a decision whether you agree with this
chart or not. After all, there are plenty of first-release charts
to go around these days, and this one is as good as any.

                                                          -
BOARD DIARY : Edited by BIZARRE. This chapter is one of my
true favourites, as it probably covers the board scene in the
optimal way. BIZARRE gives a detailed round-up of the general
happenings on the bopoards, as well as a list of the people
that made their way to the boards. This is an excellent idea,
although it requires a constant card-supply, otherwise the list
and report would be lacking. But this one does not, therefore I
have but only applause for this section - original and
interesting. However, what it has - and others may not have,
it is certainly lacking what I would expect to see on a Board
Report type chapter. There was no board-reviews, which is
quite astonishing, as all board chapters have that since the
beginning of time. With a few exceptions I admit. But
nonetheless, magnificent chapter - well done!

ANYTHING GOES : Edited by VENGEANCE. This chapter is the
official debate section, in which VENGEANCE takes up
controversial subjects - and try to come to a conclusion, -
or just give us something to consider. This time he debated
today's magazine situation - for good and bad. Very
interesting article, VENGEANCE is by all means capable of
serving a good read.

THE MARKET : Edited by VENGEANCE. The Market is the
official advertisement section for the commercial units in the
scene. But as there are very few of them actually active and
interested in the scene, all that made up for pages, where the
plugs for CHERRY SOFTWARE's new games. I predict this
chapter to be a one-timer, although I may naturally be wrong!

THE LIGHTERSIDE : Edited by VENGEANCE. If people crave for
a chapter with some fun, they should check outthis section of
VANDALISM NEWS. Although I am a bigger fan of my own work
in SATIRICA (hey, a bit of advertisement never hurt!), this
chapter has also proven popular. It includes satiric views and
tales from the scene, although it would be wrong of you to -
take it serious - because it is not. In the best satiric manor,
all stories are made up - or taken from other stories, turned
around, to leave you with a different tale. People may claim it
is direct lies, but I prefer to call it another truth. Like it or not!

CODING HELP : Edited by JOLZ. This chapter represents a first
for VANDALISM NEWS, and holds useful hints on coding and
such. Whether or not the coders in the scene can learn from
this, I will leave as unsaid, after all I am not a coder. I will
therefore leave my expertise where there is actually one,
know what I mean? The worst part of this chapter, is the fact
that it is extremely bad at promoting the skill of coding. There
is no big headlines, no stroll down the different routines.
Anything, but this. The fact that it only gave 3 measly pages,
did not help my review either.

UP AND COMING : Edited by BIZARRE and VENGEANCE. Oh
yeah, now we are getting somewhere. At first I thought -
maybe good old VANDALISM NEWS had called for a talent
contest, but since I had not received any invitations from
down under the last month - I figured I was wrong. luckily I
was wrong, but not as much as god intended. Up and Coming is
a brand new edition to VANDALISM NEWS, and offers new
groups and people the chance to promote themselves to the
scene. I find the idea slightly disturbing, reminds me of my
VERY early days as a rock-musician. Me and my buddies had
not even got ourselves musical instruments, before we had
named the band and made up posters. Well, maybe it was just
a case of wrong priorities, but before we actually came to the
practical parts, most of us had lost interest and moved on.
Life's funny!

NEWS AND RUMOURS : Edited by VENGEANCE and BIZARRE. I
think this section needs no introduction, at least not if you
have read a magazine before. The genersal news and coverage
of the scene is excellent. Both VENGEANCE and BIZARRE -
are heavily active swappers and phreakers, therefore that
puts them in the centre of world-wide news. What is there left
to say, but go go gadget.

MAIL CHARTS : Edited by BIZARRE. The mail chats is the
typical old fashioned chart system, simply based on
vote-sheets. BIZARRE is well covered on the actual scene
situation, therefore he is well qualified for making comments
on the charts. Although I do find he could have rooted a bit
more for THE PULSE - it should make any editor appalled and
outraged, that we are not in the top 3! (There we go with the
advertisements again.. But hey, it is our anniversary, we
should be allowed to boost our confidence a little).

ADDRESSES : Edited by BIZARRE. Well, I find that
VANDALISM NEWS is confusing us a little with these flashy
chapter titles. No, I am more than perfectly happy with the
names - they are as they should be. But this section is -
another one of those, that simply needs no comments. Here is
something for everyone, go find a lonely buddy on the other
side of the planet - and swap Christmas stories with him!

THE REACTIONS : Edited by VENGEANCE and BIZARRE.
Interactive sections of a magazine can never go wrong, and
thus became THE REACTIONS a part of VANDALISM NEWS.
Let your voice be heard by the editors, like it or not - all part
of the things you can tell the editors.

MAGAZINE BAROMETER : Edited by BIZARRE. This is another
new segment to the program of VANDALISM NEWS, and called
something as new and interesting, as the Magazine
Barometer. What is this Barometer then, you might ask? Well,
it is merely short and to the case magazine-reviews, with the
additional rating - based on a scale from 1-7. Ring a bell? You
are reading the original right now, heh! Why BIZARRE gave
THE PULSE a 4 is beyond me, especially considering the -
fact, that large chunks of VANDALISM NEWS has been inspired
from the before mentioned magazine. I am not looking for
glory or anything, but I really dislike poor reviews - every
other magazine claim we have had the best releases in the
history of our magazine. But okay, if BIZARRE insists upon
comparing us with the Australian magazine SMASH, he is free
to do so.

COMEBACK : Edited by VENGEANCE. There is plenty of
interesting oldies from the scene, that has made their way
back to the less complicated computer-scene. The return of
the fellow sceners, are noted in this chapter. I hope to be in it
once, should I leave the scene in the near future!

SAY WHAT : Edited by GOP. This chapter is similar to the
chapter, ANYTHING GOES, as it is basically another debate
section - only with a different editor. It claims to be a
chapter, that does not care about offending anyone, at -
least not with what the subjects are concerned. But there is
no need to use foul language, it really does not give much
respect to the subjects debated. Ever heard of a teacher or
politician use foul language when debating - or even trying to
convince someone? Learn your tactics, and you will be heard.
Ah, maybe GOP would call it "Word homies!!".

MIXED BAG : Edited by GOP. Another chapter edited by GOP,
this one appears to have a debating edge to it as well,
although of a different nature. The Mixed Bag is concerned
about wares in general, and GOP therefore embarks upon the
market, to find different products to review. Very interesting,
and gives you a good idea on what is out there for you to grab.

THE BACKPAGE : Edited by VENGEANCE. The conclusion and
farewell chapter, with final remains from the hardworking
General editor.
THE CONCLUSION
------------
VANDALISM NEWS is a huge magazine, with all the necessary
chapter and contents to make up for an excellent magazine.
But not only that, it is totally concentrated on the C64 scene
- no copies from real-life magazines or anything like that. This
is C64 news and information at its best, and I most certainly
applaud their effort - as should anyone. Through their last
couple of editions, they have become extremely popular,
mainly due to the bigger and better chapters - but most
definitely due to the regular release-mode VANDALISM NEWS
is in right now.

I have full confidence in VENGEANCE as the leader of
VANDALISM NEWS, and look forward to following it in the
future. It appears odd to me though, that out of the 6 best
magazines in the world - two of them are based in Tasmania,
Australia. The other one being DOMINATION by JAZZCAT -
of course. The world is probably a lot smaller than we thought,
but there you go.

This concludes our complete physical of this excellent
old-timer. We thought it was about time VANDALISM NEWS
was awarded another review, and this was the report taken
from that research. But moving on to the actual grade based
on the research, I found myself in between two camps. I really
think VANDALISM NEWS is among the best magazines there
are, but I find it has huge difficulties in keeping the
professional journalism edge, that I sincerely feel is only
mastered a few magazines. The fact, that it is always
extremely obvious who is editing, I find as a major minus. It
would be better to focus on the task at hand, but on the other
hand, the editors of VANDALISM NEWS have pulled off a truly
admirable working performance. Well, there you go!

JUDGEMENT : ***** (Close to perfection)

year in review

1995 - A year in review!..............................by Crossfire/MOTIV 8
----------------------------------------
Another year has passed, and as the scene slowly and sadly
dies day for day, not many things happened. Still, a few sur-
prises DID get pulled out of the hat by some groups this year,
and we are here trying to tell you...REMIND you...what happe-
ned - month for month..

JANUARY:
------
Following the death of GENESIS*PROJECT at THE TRIBUTE
1994 party as nearly all members joins F4CG, the fantastic
four cracking group has a major comeback, releasing huge
bundles of first-releases, mostly pal only. In the midst of all
this happiness, sadly BITMAN/F4CG is busted for hacking
activities on the internet and noone has seen signs of life from
him ever since. SUCCESS+TRC is riding high on the waves of
the internet, boasting themselves having the only.. -More!-
..illegal FTP-site at the time, that being THE DIGITAL DUN-
GEON. Old DOMINATORS-board, DREAM PARK, is being brought
back online by CYBORG and almost imidiately is taken on as
HQ for F4CG and AVANTGARDE. It breaks records, turning into
the #1 US-board in only a question of days. MOTIV 8 is doing a
little bit of releasing again, after they've been on a break since
August 1994. TALENT gaining several members, attempting to
make a comeback, people such as GREENFROG, GZ, LARRY and
SORCERESS is taken in, but this comeback attempt never
really falls through..

FEBRUARY:
-------
An Australian shockwave hits the scene as JAZZCAT/LEGEND
and VENGEANCE/SUCCESS+TRC forms ONSLAUGHT, represen-
ting on its member status, a lot of people you thought left the
scene for good. People such as L.A.STYLE/GENESIS PROJECT,
MAJESTY, CHRYSAGON and IGNORANCE/TALENT.. -More!-
..and a lot of others said to have returned, even COUNT ZERO
is said to be a member, that however turns out not to be true,
which is why the forming of this group gets a lot of harsh and
negative comments from most of the elite scene - Rumours
has it, that most of these people was only brought back figu-
ring the member status to make the group look good, although
nobody was active - Little did they know, but ONSLAUGHT was
able to disprove most of these rumours, and most of the tur-
moile vanished again. Following the birth of ONSLAUGHT, the
old famous LEGEND is put to sleep for good, as the only really
active member left, JAZZCAT, leaves them. It is seriously be-
ginning to go downhill for CHROMANCE, as MR.WAX announces
that he is going to join the army and therefore isn't able to
take care of the group meanwhile. He leaves the others in
charge, but somehow CHROMANCE totally vanishes for a big
amount of time. Finally, after doing a LOT of commercializing,
FAIRLIGHT releases the first issue of SHOUT, which is a mer-
ge of REFORMATION and some german mags. -More!-
MARCH:
-----
After a couple of months of being groupless following the
death of GENESIS*PROJECT, MIZAR and his board, INTER-
TRADE, joins the MOTIV 8-fleet. Sadly, MIZAR is busted only
a few days later for his hacking activities. Nobody has heard a
whisper from him ever since that. One of ALPHA FLIGHT's two
american boards, THE EVIL ISLAND, goes offline, according to
several people, due to lacking support. Indeed a sad month !!!
Great news from Norway, however, as old demo-legend from
the end of the eighties, MEGASTYLE INCORPORATED, can
announce thier return, only now calling themselves MEGASTY-
LE PRODUCTIONS, with plenty of the old members, ie. SCROLL
and CYCLEBURNER. ALPHA FLIGHT's little "scandal" starts,
as ONSLAUGHT accuse them of having re-cracked thier debut-
release "MISFORTUNE PREVIEW". As far as could be seen,
nothing was really proven.
                                                        -More!-
APRIL:
----
Old cracking legend, BINJINX, from the years ago diseased
american cracking legend, EAGLE SOFT INC., makes a return
to the C64 and joins up with MOTIV 8, promising soon to open
a board and several FTP-sites on the internet. The trouble
surrounding ALPHA FLIGHT like a menace continues from
where it left off from the month before, as CHROMANCE now
accuse them of having re-cracked a CHROMANCE-release from
a month earlier, that being NUTS. Some evidence was provided
by CHROMANCE, and somehow ALPHA FLIGHT is able to dis-
prove them wrong in a convincable way.

MAY:
---
To give competition to SUCCESS+TRC's total reign running the
only illegal FTP-site on the internet, F4CG and MOTIV 8 is
able to boast the opening of INTERPARK, which.. -More!-
..from day one gains a lot of callers and users but takes a long
time to struggle its way the final way, which is why THE
DIGITAL DUNGEON still remain #1. Australian ONSLAUGHT is
able to announce the fact, that they have gone into a crack-
ing co-operation with their german friends in HARDCORE, and
does so, putting out a lot of releases, mainly previews. Only 2
weeks later, CHOTAIRE get kicked/leave (still not completely
about this!?) due to arguments with BIZARRE and RAMIREZ.
This is important, due to the gigantic fuzz/war that followed.
ALPHA FLIGHT having the third of three bad months, as they
were this time accused by english group, MAYHEM, of having
ripped a picture from their COMIC ART-pictures series for a
game named "BAD BALLS", they should have coded themsel-
ves to gain points - However, as ALPHA FLIGHT's spokesman
explained it, it is not his fault that the coder stole the picture
and that the game WAS a geniune game which had been sold,
and once again, ALPHA FLIGHT was cleared cunningly.
                                                        -More!-
JUNE:
----
After nearly a year of absence, THE PULSE MAGAZINE is
finally on the streets again. It gains a lot of positive, but also
negative acclaim from the scene, due to the lacking release-
charts, but even without those still earns a lot of respect and
regognition. Two old german groups return, as both HITMEN
and PANDORA are brought back to the scene, in both cases
involving several original members. HITMEN are re-formed by
PEACEMAKER, CURLIN, RACOON, VORTEX and others and
brings back both JIHAD and ARROGANCE to the scene on an
active state. The involvement of JIHAD brings a lot of harsh
comments, but he is able to put the complainers to shame as
he does a couple of releases, proving that he is still going str-
ong, indeed. Also, JINX/ex-CHROMANCE return to the scene
and joins up with HITMEN. PANDORA are brought back by
CHOTAIRE, who've joined ALPHA FLIGHT, but misses his old
PANDORA-friends, which is why he brings back.. -More!-
..people like ATTRACTION, MEPHISTO, SKY and others from
the old PANDORA, and gain a couple of members from other
groups like TALENT and MOTIV 8, in order to get back on an
active state. A few releases DOES come out, but in only a
manner of a few days, the group is slowly beginning to look
dead again.

JULY:
----
Big discussions within the ranks of ALPHA FLIGHT, as SKIN-
HEAD kicks out CHOTAIRE, the rest of ALPHA FLIGHT takes
him back, which results in SKINHEAD leaving the group, only
to return to them again a week later. Old english cracking
legend, LASER, which was brought back to life by the old
leader, STEVE, in 1993 died again. At this point, STEVE has
been inactive for half a year and the remaining members leaves
and all join some fairly unknown groups. Some strange group
named NEMESIS appear and disapper again.. -More!-
AUGUST:
------
Big problems for POL POT/ALPHA FLIGHT, as his board,
HOLIDAY INN CAMBODIA, is having several problems with his
hardware and is forced to take the board offline for a longer
amount of time. ROCKSTAR/TALENT is rumoured to have
joined finnish group, PALACE, but approaching himself, he said
it was just a misunderstanding and that he never joined them
for real.

SEPTEMBER:
--------
The cracking co-operation between australian ONSLAUGHT
and german HARDCORE splits up, as both parties were not
very sadisfied with the result they had with it. After a quiet
period due to served military-services, CHROMANCE is getting
ready for a comeback, gaining several members and releases
plenty of wares, amongst them some which was very.. -More!-
..discussed, ie. VIDEO MEANIES, TECHNODREAM PREVIEW
and THE DUNGEON MASTER. All was said to be covered up re-
releases, but as the evidence was hard to find, nothing was
really proven at this point. As MARC/ALPHA FLIGHT is now up
for grabs when it comes to the army, he is forced to put down
his activities for a while and hand the leadership elsewhere. It
however seem to work fine, and no real changes happen. The
european headquarters for years belonging to SUCCESS+TRC
and absolute #1 board in Holland, THE LOST EMPIRE, is taken
offline, due to GUZZLER losing interest in the C64.

OCTOBER:
------
THE MERCENARY/EMPIRE, brother of RICH/EMPIRE, return
to the scene after about a year of absence, to join up with
ALPHA FLIGHT and on that note, old ALPHA-FLIGHT board
THE EVIL ISLAND goes back online again, still running under
the ALPHA FLIGHT-flag.. -More!-
A lot of unproven accusations, as MOTIV 8 is being blamed for
being neo-nazi's, however, this was very easy for them to
disprove as they had compelling evidence, showing exactly
the opposite was the truth. ONSLAUGHT performs a MASSIVE
clean-out-day in thier members, with several people getting
the boot for inactivity. Newly re-formed PANDORA died in-
officially with only MOSES left to show a little activity, as all
members join either ALPHA FLIGHT, MOTIV 8 or CHROMANCE.
TRSI hosts the yearly RADWAR-party, but according to a lot
of people, it was a huge disappointment to most visitors,
mainly because the C64 plays such a small part in the overall
computer-scene today.

NOVEMBER:
-------
Hungarian based group, CHROMANCE, was able to boast the
opening of TWO boards both located in Poland, OVERDOSE and
COUNTY JAIL. Furthermore, a board in Turkey.. -More!-
..was opened this month by DIGAHOLE/ONSLAUGHT by the
name of MONSTER. One can say it was a month for boards in
strange places! :-) Both HITMEN and MOTIV 8 finally managed
to gain a polish section, only MOTIV 8 founded it on a more
creative note, as they mainly took in coders, graphics-artists
and musicians, while HITMEN took in a direct original supplier.
Big scandal, as AVANTGARDE tries to enter the PC-scene with
the claim that "they created the C64-scene and made it what
it is today!", exact words by DEFF. One can not deny they had
a big impact the last two years, but they CERTAINLY did NOT
MAKE the scene!!! Old danish musicman, METAL/VIBRANTS,
reappear in the slightly as legal front, as he joins up with
AVANTGARDE. It was bound to happen, and this month it DID -
F4CG was born on the SNES - Figuring the member status is
old prominent people like NEWSCOPY, SOLAR, ANTITRACK,
STORMRIDER, HOBBIT, not to forget JUDGE, formerly known
as RASTAN/ILLUSION. SUCCESS+TRC was this month able to
boast the return of COUNT ZERO/ex-TALENT and.. -More!-
..former report for THE PULSE MAGAZINE. One had considered
gone for all eternity so it was a happy occasion for sure! HOLI-
DAY INN CAMBODIA is finally being put back online, as all POL
POT's worries are gone and system runs 100%, only all users
has to re-apply.

DECEMBER:
-------
PROPAGANDA is able to boast their 20th issue, and that is
being done by releasing PROPAGANDA GOLD on DISK and not
PAPER as earlier promised. It contains a chapter from the old
original founder of the mag and GENESIS*PROJECT, that
being ANTICHRIST, the man you either LOVED or HATED, but
nomadder WHAT, you could always be sure HE only HATED!!! :-)
DEFF of AVANTGARDE moves to Berlin and by that reveals
that the future of AVANTGARDE is very uncertain, as it is
virtually impossible for him to lead it on a longer basis, being
located so far away from most of the members.

      + THE NEW YEAR PROFILE - SKATER /ex.LEGEND +
--------------------------------------------------------------

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have this month, exclusive to our
stage, one of the biggest names in the history of magazine
producing on the C64. The magazine which he gamed
tremendous fame all over the world, became the most liked
and read magazine in the 90's, and colleagues within the C64
media used and expanded his ideas to make better and more
competitive magazines. The magazine in question, is of course
the infamous and wildly popular SHOCK!

But all good things tends to end when demand is at its peak,
and our guest left the scene to embark upon new challenges
on other computers - trying to give SHOCK new dimensions on
the SNES. However, the C64 has a golden side to it, making
people return to watch its growth. This guest is no exception,
and it is therefore with great pleasure, I welcome this months
guest, the editor of SHOCK, SKATER!
<D> DUKE
<S> SKATER
--------------------------------------------------------------

<D> Hello again SKATER, it is great to see, that you are still
around and interested in the old C64. This gives a lot of
people a chance, in terms of getting to know the person
behind SHOCK. Please give our readers, a description of
      the person behind the handle.

<S> Well, my real name is TOM GREEVE, I live in a small
village just above ROTTERDAM, HOLLAND. I am 22 years
of age, I have a fulltime job as a Network Engineer, and
besides that I do some small business on my own. I still
live at home but am looking for a place to move to with my
      girlfriend.

<D> SHOCK was not your only achievement in the scene, and
you have been a part of many successful groups, LEGEND
being your last. Please give a summery of the events that
shaped your glorious career up to the time where you left
      the scene.

<S> Well the first group I joined that some of you might
remember was DRIVE, I later moved to SPHINX, and later
joined CULTURE. I had then recently bought a 1200 baud
modem and started importing software from the US, I
became the "Number One" importer (Mamba charts, ha!)
and joined CENSOR. I hained a lot of friends (mostly
sysops) for uploading stuff to their boards. By then I had
already released several issue's of Sh0ck on paper, but
the demand for a disk issue of Sh0ck started to grow, so
I decided to go "Disk". I had released several issue's for
CENSOR, but when most of the CENSOR members became
inactive I joined forces with LEGEND. When I lost interest
in the C64 I moved PC and left LEGEND. Thanks to GENE
(who some of you might remember) I got onto some good
boards with good access, soon after that I had joined
RAZOR 1911, within a few months I became Courier
Co-ordinator, but around that time I had left school and
I got a job. I started to lack time, and had to stop my
activities for RAZOR 1911. I haven't really been active in
any scene since then (around 2 years back).

<D> I would have never believed that, no scene? Sounds like
hell to me :) A lot of people still miss the great influence
of SHOCK, even though a great number of magazines have
kept the industry going. Why did you stop producing
SHOCK, and what have you been up to since?

<S> Well the main reason I stopped publishing Sh0ck was
because at the end I had to do everything on my own. I
had to wait and wait for other people to give their
contribution in time, in the beginning I didn't mind, but
at the end I never came around releasing it, because I
(again) had to wait ages for people to send their graphics,
pictures and articles and whenever they did I had to
      update all the other articles.

<D> I think that is a problem most editors has to fight at one
time or another, but I do think people has improved these
days, when having to help out magazines. Let us move
backwards to the beginning of SHOCK. What made you
start Sh0ck, and who was involved with it during the
      years it was released?

<S> Well the first issue of Sh0ck that got released was on
paper, at that time I was a member of CULTURE (a Dutch
importing group). I and DRUID made the first issue with
graphics from MIRAGE (also an old LEGEND member), we
released around 4 or 5 issues and then I decided to go
"disk". Basically I and ILLUSIONIST (American Social
Engineer - ed. Voice Hacking) made the first issue.
I remember no one knew we were going to release it, and
when it finally got released everyone was "Sh0cked" and
loved it from the beginning. If I remember correctly, BOD
had then joined the staff, and later EXCELL (ex. IKARI) -
he left the MAMBA staff and joined forces with us. And
GENE (ex. ILLUSION, etc.) - he almost joined the MAMBA
staff, but we got him "Sh0cked" just in time. I remember
the last few issue's were the best (in my opinion).

<D> I agree on that point, it kept getting better - which is
why it was such a shock to people when you pulled the
plug on it. Anyway, what has been the hardest part of
doing a magazine in the C64 scene?

<S> Getting people to do their job, getting their contribution
      to me in time.

<D> SHOCK was primarily for the people based on the boards,
with the great release charts and U.S. reports. But there
was also a lot of other contents which made it a good read
for the entire scene. How did you come up with the
      contents?

<S> Well basically I had some new idea's for every issue,
it became better and better. It could have been much
better if I had some more help (BOD was basically the only
one really getting stuff done for the magazine). I
remember we even made some C64 English paper magazine
(ZZAP 64 or something) with a great review (95% I think).

<D> Very impressive, I did not even know these magazines
cared about the scene that much. You had a lot of
problems with releasing SHOCK regularly, at least I
remember the many months we sometimes had to wait
before it was presented on the boards. What was the main
problems that caused these heavy delay's, and did they
in some way accumulate in you pulling the plug on SHOCK
      in the end?

<S> Well we had a bet with MAMBA, that the first 5 issue's
would be released on the 15th of every month. If I
remember correctly we had released 4 on the 15th and 1 on
the 16th, by that time it didn't really matter anymore, so
the delay's became bigger and bigger (also MAMBA had
huge delay's as well). I do regret never releasing a final
      issue..

<D> That's understandable. What did you enjoy the most
about SHOCK, and what did you dislike?

<S> What I liked most were the cool reactions from our
readers, I remember getting letters from all over the
world. When we made the U.K. C64 magazine with a
review, I recieved around 50 reactions from all over the
world from people wanting a subscription to Sh0ck. Sh0ck
was very proffesional from the beginning on, at the end I
even got previews from games I had put on the same disk
as Sh0ck. Companies would send press releases, etc. We
had great charts, cool articles (I remember the "XXX
leaving TALENT" article I made), and we got to interview
people that were never interviewed before (BOD and
GRIM REAPER in the first issue, POWERPLANT, TBB, and
      so much more).

What did I dislike? The wining from people when I didn't
give their game enough points (in their humble opinion),
I remember I had come up with a chart giving groups
points for their releases (a combination of price/quality).
People from RED SECTOR were always wining that my
points were biased, etc. That's the thing I hated most,
but then again, that was only a small part of the whole
      thing.
<D> I remember GRIM REAPER well. JIM was one of the few I
liked from NEI. Anyway, PROPAGANDA and MAMBA were
rivals of SHOCK when it was released. What is your opinion
about PROPAGANDA and MAMBA, and what magazine,
excluding SHOCK, is your all-time favourite?

<S> Well MAMBA was already around way before Sh0ck got
released. I always liked MAMBA very much since PETER
(the main editor) had his own opinion on things, and didn't
let other people change his mind. MAMBA did become
boring after a while, since the layout never changed, and
the editors didn't come up with new idea's and stuff (I do
still think that the "Did you know.." line was the best
every, I never got around beating that article).
PROPAGANDA, I don't really remember that magazine so
well. I didn't really look at PROPAGANDA as competition,
I guess it lasted longer than Sh0ck though. I remember
most of the magazine's I read just tried to get as much
text as possible, they didn't care what it said. They just
wanted their magazine to fill 664 blocks on their disk.
SHOCK was never like this, we tried to keep it as
interesting as possible, the only way we filled the disk
was with game and demo previews.

<D> Quality before quantity, a good policy. Looking back to
your days on the C64, what do you miss the most?

<S> Talking with all these people around the world, I
remember having a lot of friends in a lot of places.

<D> What is the difference between the scene you frequent
now, and that of the C64?

<S> Well, as I said earlier I haven't been active in any scene
at all for the past 2 years. But I remember the big
difference between the C64 and PC scene was the
proffesionality. The C64 scene was based on friendship,
and the PC scene was based on MONEY! I remember both
scene's didn't understand each other at all, I guess when
people grew up they went PC? I still think the C64 scene
I was in at that time, was a experience which I am glad I
      did not miss!

<D> That is good to hear. What in your opinion, would be the
      ideal 64 scene?

<S> Well, the scene was pretty nice when I left, but if there is
no support for a machine (new releases) a scene can never
last! I was very surprised to see so many people still being
active on the C64, even though I wasn't surprised to see
people as SOLAR and BOD still walking around in C64 land.

<D> It tends to grow on you. Have you been kept informed
about the developments on the C64 since you left it?
<S> No, not at all. Everyone I talk to is not active anymore!

<D> Maybe it is time you read THE PULSE then - it should give
you some idea of the current situation. There was some
rumours about a legal version of SHOCK getting released,
but it never happened though. What was your opinion
about that, and were you involved?

<S> A legal version of Shock? I did think about it, but hmm.. I
don't remember those thoughts becoming reality (or even
close). I guess I never really was involved! I even heard a
SNES version of Sh0ck was released for quite some time,
I haven't been involved in any Sh0ck projects besides the
C64 one. GENE and I wanted to release a PC version of
Sh0ck, but when GENE got busted (or what happend to
him anyway?) those plans never became reality. I guess I
should have put a copyright on the Sh0ck label?
<D> GENE was busted, and it seems no one has heard from him
since. According to my sources, his computer was taken
by the police - and he was charged with Card Fraud.
Anyway, which people have you admired the most in the
      scene, and for what reasons?

<S> Hmm.. People with dedication, such as BOD (No one
could beat him away from his C64). People with class
(POWERPLANT and GOLDFISH, haha!! or should I say,
people with an IQ over 140??). Good friends (EXCELL,
GENE, WESTBAM). Good sysops (AYCEE, PUDWERX,
      PRODIGY). Great Social Engineers (ILLUSIONIST).
Big jerks (THE SHADOW, HARTMUT (nice talking to you
though)). THOR (heard he went PC as well?). Big talents
(MIRAGE, GOTCHA, DANKO, BOB, HORIZON). Typical
Germans (HOK, ANTICHRIST, HARTMUT). Fuck I am sure
I am forgetting half of my old friends.. If I did forget you,
      shoot me?
<D> What are your future plans in terms of computer
involvement, and have you thought about a comeback to
      the C64 scene?

<S> Well since my fulltime job is Network Engineer, I work
with computers all day long. I install, configure and main-
tain Novell NetWare and Microsoft Windows NT networks.
Further more I install, configure and maintain Cisco Router
all around the world. As for future plans, I hope to start
my own business some day! My future plans for the C64?
Well, getting the thing out of my closet some day, and
read all the issue's of Shock!!

<D> That should not be too difficult, I hope :) Before closing
the book on this interview, I will give you the last words,
in which you can also give your regards to friends and foes
      around the world!
<S> Well, since I never really got around making a goodbye
note, I would like to ask all my old friends to contact me
through E-mail (t.greeve@luna.nl). Also I will be at the
Ce-bit again, so you might meet met there!
I am very interested in how most of you ended up, though
I am sure, 99% of the people I used to talk to will never
read this! Further more I would like to apoligize for never
releasing the last paper issue with those 100% of pictures.
I would like to thank the following people for their
contribution: HOK, JUCKE, DEFF, GUPPIE, BOD, AYCEE
      and POWERPLANT.

<D> Thanks SKATER, it's been a pleasure. Good luck!

<S> I don't think I will ever return to the C64, I am glad
though that it is still alive. I will keep visiting the IRC
channels once in a while, and I hope to keep in touch
with some of you through E-mail..

20th anniversary

 + THE PULSE MAGAZINE - 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION +
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome everybody to the Anniversary edition of THE PULSE,
as we celebrate the birth of the 20th beauty in our two and a
half year old history. In recognition of this joyous event, we
have decided to honour the people behind this production, that
succeeded in bringing new perspective to the C64 scene
media!

It is our opinion, that THE PULSE MAGAZINE has proven to
the scene, and its loyal readers, that it cares and take pride in
playing an important role of building a foundation for the future
of the C64 scene. It has been a very hard task at times, but
the outcome has been most gratifying - and today we look
back on years of fun and laughter. And ladies and gentlemen, is
that no what the C64 scene is all about?

                                                            -
As we stroll down memory lane, remembering the events that
shaped the full body of our most previous magazine, we will
present to you some of the people that stood by the
celebrated media institution through good and bad. We will
also listen to some of the colleagues in an otherwise ruthless
industry, and hear what they have to say about the
accomplishments of THE PULSE MAGAZINE.

But first, we will look back on the months that made THE
PULSE MAGAZINE available to the members of the C64 scene
society. These were the actual release-dates.

THE BEGINNING 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

THE PULSE MAGAZINE was founded in the month of June
1993, as it was readable looking at the schedule listed
previously. At that time I, DUKE, had just returned to the
scene from an 8 month long break, and decided to do
something different - but most importantly, return to the
scene in an active state. Having been involved with the
cracking, demo, magazine and phreaking parts of the scene,
I figured I would have accumulated enough experience to start
my very own magazine.

I had no real problem getting help in doing the magazine, as I
had gained many friends from my adventures on the American
boards in the past. Therefore I made contact with a few old
colleagues, and soon a most qualifying staff had been formed.
The first members were PSYCHOBILLY and BREGO of RED
SECTOR INC., at that time the leading cracking-group in the -

--------------------------------------------------------------

scene. They helped me getting the news I needed, and the
spreading of the magazine was also taken good care of.

The magazine was then presented in the scene for the very
first time, and it proved to be a very thrilling experience for
me. A huge audience of hundreds - even thousands of potential
readers on the C64, reading and judging my work. I received a
lot of nice letters and reactions from former friends, and I
thought to myself - doing THE PULSE is the best move I ever
made in the scene. Although I had no major plans to make THE
PULSE a heavy weight magazine, PSYCHOBILLY indirectly
encouraged me to expand on my ideas for the magazine, and
within months my vision had changed. I sincerely felt I had
the material as well as ability, to make THE PULSE one of the
best magazines there ever were. With the right assistance,
my vision could become a reality!
LABELS AND PERIODS 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

THE PULSE MAGAZINE has always been a very independent
magazine, even though it has been released by various labels
through 20 editions. But even though released by a group, it
has made its own path - and followed it, dispite what possible
group policies there may have been.

We are currently on the look for a respectable label for this
magazine to join. We feel it could better its position in the
market, which is an ambition of ours.

THE MONTHLY DEADLINE 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

Time started going by very fast. Each edition was replaced by
the plans for the next edition, and very soon THE PULSE had
been accepted in the scene as a reliable and excellent
magazine. The name started showing in the charts, and that
only encourage us to continue to better ourselves - and get
more qualified members into the swiftly growing staff.

As months went by, THE PULSe was known as the most
steady released magazine, and the well known slogan -
"We do not accept any delays, nor should you" was made. A
couple of competitors did not like this, mostly because they
were having serious problems keeping their own deadlines -
and therefore thought of my controversial slogan as a direct
attack on them.

                                                            -
THE MONTHLY DEADLINE 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

I will not bore anyone with the details that followed, but a
period of hard competing began - mostly between the settled
PROPAGANDA, and the still young magazine, THE PULSE.

It turned into a rather grim affair, probably comparable to the
MAMBA vs. PROPAGANDA years. But although everything
about the "war" was under all criticism, something very good
came out of it. Both sides involved began improving
dramatically, trying to overdue each other.

This therefore meant, readers of both magazines would get
better magazines, and this helped on their voting as well.
Later PROPAGANDA and THE PULSE was to make an end to
the war, and today we are colleagues of the best nature. We
acknowledge each others success, and also comment each
other on the work we put into the magazines.
THE MAGAZINE OUTFIT 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

The outfit of THE PULSE MAGAZINE have been a great part, in
creating the style we practise today. We have always tried to
make as anonymous outfits as possible, although good
looking, but with thetext as the main focus on the screen.

In the first 16 editions of THE PULSE, DR.ZIVAGO was
responsible for the outfit. But as he lost interest in the C64
and moved towards new ambitions on the PC, the task of
creating a new outfit was handed to SYNDROM. He has done
remarkably well, and we have recieved a lot of good criticism
about the current outfit. We hope to continue producing
user-friendly outfits, that will put the text in the highest
priority.

Afterall, THE PULSE is a magazine, and not a demo!

THE DOWNFALL 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

THE PULSE MAGAZINE started its reputation as a very steady
released magazine. The first 14 editions was released without
notable delays, and because of this THE PULSE MAGAZINE
rose to the top throughout the world of magazine charts. The
magazine, which originally was only intended to hold a few
chapters and a small staff, was as popular as never before -
but despite the success, it was walking towards a bitter end
of an incredible release record.

In the month of September 1994, the very last edition of THE
PULSE MAGAZINE was to be released. This was a very
unexpected event, as on the surface the magazine was at its
prime, and had not revealed any problems of any sort. On the
contrary, which was what created the most concern within
the ranks of the staff. But there was no getting around it, the
most stabile magazine in the scene was dead.
THE DOWNFALL 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

Shortly after the news had hit the headlines, I decided to
release a note to explain the true reason for the death -
especially since I knew rumours were giving false
explanations. In the note, I told the scene, how I had grown
tired of the endless work involved with doing the magazine. It
had transformed from being an utter pleasure and honour, into
a great burdon and tiresome involvement. Therefore the
decision was made, the 14th edition put a stop to the history
of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. At least, so everybody thought!

When the staff-members of THE PULSE MAGAZINE heard of
my decision to retire, they decided to stop their work as well.
The main reason why there was no one to take over my role,
and carry on the work, was that most of the staff was linked
to me - and when that link was gone, the platform fell a part.
THE EDITORIAL 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

Those who have been following the progres of THE PULSE
through time, has also been somewhat astonished by the
great number of people involved with the creation. In today's
standard, the editorial of THE PULSE could easily be compared
to an average sized group. This type of organisation and
editing method was completely new to an industry, that was
normally featured by a couple of editors - lead by a very active
General editor.

But a new era within the magazine industry had begun, and
with that, other magazines started signing on more staff-
membes to keep up the competition. But this was not the only
change in the magazine industry, the biggest event happened
when THE PULSE started greeting other magazines - and later
on, other magazines took on the new trend, and greeted their
colleagues within the business. Independecy became popular!
THE EDITORIAL 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

Returning to the editorial of THE PULSE, we find an incredible
list of staff-members through its history. The editorial has had
no less than 27 members, and as if that was not enough, it
was not counting the coders, musicians, swappers and sysops
involved with the magazine.

But in the respect and recognotion of the people who had been
involved from the beginning of THE PULSE, we will now
present a correct list of the members of staff through all of
the 20 editions released.

Please notice the editors marked with a '*'. This means they
are still involved with the editorial at THE PULSE.

THE REACTION 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

The general reaction from the loyal readers of THE PULSE was
utter disappointment, which was understandable, as THE
PULSE addressed many issues that other magazines did not.
This made the difference between the death of an ordinary
magazine and THE PULSE - an original production reveals a
need that has previously not been notable.

The competitors of THE PULSE also regretted the unexpected
death, and their reaction proved to be synonymous the world
over. The harsh competition, which had sometimes got out of
hand, was pushed aside, to show the mutual respect of a
worthy competitor. Reading the headlines and editorials of the
most notorious competitors of THE PULSE, have a sure feeling
of accomplishment - which made the decision of stopping even
more difficult.

REFORMATION (Frontpage of the News chapter)
-------------------------------
ENDURO/FAIRLIGHT about the death:

DUKE/REGINA quitted the scene, THE PULSE+REGINA=DEAD!
It is not a rumour, it is sadly true. After making it to the top
with THE PULSE, DUKE suddenly quits the scene! The group
died as well, where the other members are today is still
unclear, but one thing is sure, we at the REFORMATION-staff
lost our competitor. THE PULSE is dead and gone.

PROPAGANDA (Lead story of the Editorial)
---------------------------
NEWSCOPY/F4CG about the death;

I'd also like to take the opportunity in saluting one of the -

most valuable performances done on the 64 in the 1990's. THE
PULSE is no longer put out, and with it, goes the one and only
magazine I respected that dared speaking their piece of mind.
We may have had our arguments in the past, but both me and
DUKE developed a friendship after having dug down our axes,
and today I wipe some tears in sorrow with him going away
from the 64. The best of luck wherever you go from here, ALEX.

The famous editor of PROPAGANDA, NEWSCOPY, was right in
his predications, that the death of THE PULSE would create a
SHOCK-effect, with many new magazines being introduced to
the market following its death. Many of these proved to be
more or less worthless, but a few proved themselves as
strong competitors - working in the same area as THE PULSE.
But 8 months later, THE PULSE returned to the C64. With a
brand new staff, it was determined to regain former strenght!
THE MAGAZINE PROGRAM 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

THE PULSE MAGAZINE have tried to create a suitable
program, one that would serve the needs of the average reader
in the C64 scene. We have therefore had most of our chapters
running from the very beginning, with a few special features
on special occasions.

renamed into NEWS JOURNAL. Other chapters have had the
same transformation, but serving the same contents.
THE COMEBACK 20TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------

The comeback operation had begun, and attempting to use the
Internet to better the communication method within the staff
of THE PULSE MAGAZINE, we tried to regain our loyal readers
from past times.

But the return to a scene we felt we knew proved to be more
difficult than first presumed, and two somewhat complete
editions was followed by a dry period of no release. The reason
was quite simple. As General editor of the magazine, it sinerly
made me upset to release incomplete editions, simply to
satisfy the deadline - one we had sworn to keep when active.

Pulling the plug proved to be a healthy decision, as the next
two months - which represented the before mentioned dry
period, was used most productively. The staff was regrouped,
and certain ground rules and ambitions which were rather -

random beforem was reconsidered, and put into a detailed
futuristic plan for the magazine. This could have been the
rescue of THE PULSE, which had shown weakness, that was
discovered and noted by the colleagues in the business.

Today we have finally found our form. We know what the scene
can offer us, and have learned through 20 editions what we
can do for the scene. Together we will bring the Commodore 64
successfully into the year of 1996, hopefully to continue into
the future. It will be left unsaid whether or not we will
continue month after month, but we are confident, that with
the right amount of work put into the magazine, we can play a
part in inspiring others to take over our work. Afterall, who
wants to stick around forever.

I will leave you, with a speech made by PROPAGANDA - in the
event of giving us an award. We are most thankful for the
recognition, and will try to live up to it in the future. With the
will of YOU - our most loyal readers, we will make it!

GENERAL EDITOR,
DUKE

--------------------------------------------------------------

THE PULSE - MOST ADMIRABLE EFFORT.
THE COMEBACK OF THE YEAR IS FINALLY BACK ON TRACK

DUKE is the finest journalist you'll find on the scene. He takes
part of no group and has employed a talented staff stretching
from various angles of the scene. Taking back the magazine -
THE COMEBACK 20TH ANNIVERSARY

to the market was a fact that pleased the wide public. THE
PULSE had become a trademark for a wide circuit of readers
who saw it as a source for all categories. THE PULSE had
within a short time become the bible of the market. The
comeback, was however slightly trembling.

It seemed as though DUKE with friends needed oil in the
machinery to get it going again. With readers and involvement
functioning as oil, the last two issues have been tremendously
well written. Just recently they have also involved a release-
chart, that is so evident to gain back ground on the board-
groups. With that in mind, it is only a matter of time, until
THE PULSE can take back the crown they put down way back,
when officially leaving the market. Within 2 months, we are
positive it will be king again.

ADVERTISEMENTS Edited by KBS
--------------------------------------------------------------

Once again it's time for the usual advertisements. First of all,
let me point out the fact, that this chapter has been exactly
the same for the 2 previous issues. Ofcourse, I apologize for
that, but there wasn't really any changes, so I felt it wouldn't
matter that much.

Anyway, since this is written before the party, I will most
likely add a few more addresses, when I get to the party.
Usually, I have the adverts alphabetized, but, because of the
before mentioned reason, they will be randomised this time.

I hope that you'll also be sending in your adverts in 1996, so
that I can keep on improving this chapter. Please be so kind to
send it to the following address:
