              TALES OF THE CREST

Welcome to the latest issue of THE CREST.
Just like all previous editions, this one also
includes news and stories that reached us through
all known media- and communication-possibilities.
For eventual mistakes we don't take any liability,
because partly it isn't possible to check every info
within four weeks! But when we recognize mistakes
then they get corrected in the next issue, of
course! To present you a magazine with as less
mistakes as possible and covering most of the scene
we still need your support! Simply contact us at the
known addresses and you'll hear from us as soon as
possible!

But now over to some more internal affairs...
In the past we were asked very often if we could
enlarge our CHARTS with some more categories. To be
more exact, it was about the following additions:
Swapper-Charts, Magazine-Charts and Cover-Charts.
Very interesting, and really worth some time to think
about, but I think we already expressed our
standpoint concerning that matter, for example in
the February'98-Edition. So please don't be angry
about us that we won't include these categories in
our charts... It doesn't mean that swapping or
coverpainting can be called lame! No, every activity,
no matter if coding or swapping etc., contributes
in keeping this 8 bit wonderland alive...

After the last few dark months, at least concerning
our staff, the February brought new light in the
very often dark world of this little 64Kb machine.
To be able to present you demo-reviews with our
usual high quality in the future, we decided to
enlarge our staff... After ZYRON leaving us it looked
a little bit as it would be hard for us in the future
to make demo-reviews... But like everything in life
also this topic found a happy end! After a long
search we can finally say "Welcome!" to three new
composers. No doubt, everyone of them is a master
concerning his subject and so well-qualified to make
objective demo-reviews.
The joining ceremony gets opened by...

               >  TRIDENT of ACTIVE   <

who isn't only a great composer, but who is also
well-known for his skills in coding! So from time to
time he'll also make coding-reviews besides
DANZIG/AFL. To be exact: He'll take a closer look
especially at the nowadays very popular 4X4 chunky
effect demos... DANZIG will mostly take care of old-
style based demos, which really is his special field!

As next new staff member I welcome...

           >  KRISTIAN ROSTOEN of SHAPE    <

He isn't only well-known because of his skills
concerning musics, I guess... As a member of the
musiclabel BLUEZ MUZ he surely is more than
qualified for objective high quality reviews!
Besides TRIDENT he'll also get support from our third
new staff member...

              >   !CUBE of SCS  +TRC  <

who isn't only a famous person on the PC (He's a
member of TRAUMA.) but also gained some attention
with many great compositions... As soon as he gets
his new C=64 power supply, he'll support us as well.

Another fresh breeze brings a new chapter, which we
already announced last month. A new game-chapter,
which will be edited by a very qualified person... Of
course we are talking about no one less than...

He'll be the editor of that chapter and also will get
supported by SCROLL/MSP (Yeah, the legendary
coder!) from time to time.

"Welcome!" to all of you on board of the
unsinkable "CRESTANIC", hehe!
I hope that our collaboration won't be destroyed by
an iceberg... =)

But life hasn't only a positive side... It also has a
negative one... After massive protest from my side
(SHOK'RAY) DODGER and HARDSEQUENCER decided to
delete MITCH/CREST from the staff because of too
less support. Even after some re-contactings and
smalltalks the hoped activity still was missing...
We also "divorce" ourselves from H-BL0XX/EXCESS,
who was an official spreader for us in the past few
months. At the moment he is very busy with learning
for his exams and so very inactive...

Now over to the usual "Thank you!"s... Of course we
want to thank everyone, who supported us to get
this issue released, especially we'd like to thank...

So far the credits and stuff...

Since issue 7 we are proud to have found a
competent guy from the us-scene, who informs us
about the NTSC-scene... Like in the last edition (8)
he'll get support from some well-known us-sceners
with reviews... So hereby the whole staff takes the
chance to thank everyone, who supported and
hopefully will support the NTSC-chapter as good as
possible! Special thanks must go to PEGASUS/RPG and
BROZZMO/ASU, who reviewed some demos in the last
issue... G'job fellows! UZZY will also enlarge this
chapter with interviews and stuff... And of course
he'll get all the help he needs from our side.

Well, everything has to come to an end, and so has
the editorial in this edition...
In one of the next issue we'll introduce you a
new outfit. It doesn't come very close to what was
planned originally, but it'll satisfy most critics of
the old outfit, hopefully!

So, have fun reading this issue... Hope to see you
again next issue at the same time...

Once again feel warmly welcome to another chapter
with news and updates from the PAL-scene.

This time the chapter is very small, but don't blame
us for that! We can only write down what happened...
So if there happens nothing, we can write nothing,
you know...
Another reason for this might also be that there
only went three weeks by since our last issue...
Anyway, hope you still find these news usefull...

SINGLE NEWS:

- JUSTINYEN (former known as ALEX) decided to leave
  PENTAGRAM PRODUCTIONS. MOLOCH also left the group
  for ASCRAEUS and later on he changed his handle
  into CAISSON. Their mega-swapper RENEGADE lost
  interest in the C64 and left the scene.
  EDDIE left them to join CHROMANCE.
  They showed some activity lately with putting out
  a preview.
  Memberstatus:

  AXON, BIMBER, BIRD, DESPAIR, DOOMED, JER,
  MORPHFROG, MR MISTER, NO-XS, PARROT, SIMONKING,
  SKATE, SPINBALL, SPLASH, THE FALCON

- FLOYD left ASCRAEUS and joined TEMPEST as third
  group. ARCANE/ASCRAEUS left the scene, but a last
  graphic collection with pieces from him called
  ALONE 2 will be out soon. ARCHON and CODEMASTER
  were both kicked out of ASCRAEUS because of
  inactivity.
  DARIO, SOLOMON and RAZOR RAMON all got put on the
  inactive list of ASCRAEUS.
  A guy called RAMIREZ (ex-CODY) re-joined ASCRAEUS
  as composer and net-supporter. DOW JONES/PLUSH
  teamed up with ASCRAEUS as second group as coder.
  The same goes for LUKE/THE OBSESSED MANIACS. UFO
  came into ASCRAEUS for net-support.
  They are planning to put a tackmo out soon.

oversea scene report

              THE "OVERSEAS" SCENE REPORT

Hey all, it's everyone's favourite (and possibly
only) NTSC correspondant, bringing you the NTSC
news chapter.

Another slow month in terms of group activities,
though some light shone through the clouds and gave
me some kind of news to report.  Hopefully, with
summer looming menacingly around the corner, we
can hope to see increased releasing and group
reorganizations.

Most of this information was, again, taken off the
web and sent to me through Email (oddly enough,
though, none of the groupmembers involved told me
about it).  Since no NTSC news is really thrown about
on the boards, it makes it increasingly difficult for
this BBS Evangelist to find anything relevant out.
If I've made any mistakes, and you want me to
correct them (as well you should), the please let
me know.

@ Carcass kicked Aahz The Demon, Carcass and
   Suraklin due to inactivity.  They then picked up
   Zirc0 and a newcomer, Hoffman.

@ The Heretic, formerly of Alpha Flight, joined RPG.

@ After leaving Venom a few months ago, WSoft
   rejoined them recently.

@ The Fatman joined Millenium, after apparently
   turning down various offers from other groups.

@ RPG put Chance, Heavy-Head and Warnock on
   "inactive" status until further notice.

A quick little observation, if I may.  It appears to me
that a lot more PAL sceners took part in this one.
As opposed to the first compo, in which no European
sceners took part, this is something like a 500%
increase in overseas participation.

Is this a sign that the two scenes are coming
together, after years of segregation?  Is this the
beginning of a brand new C64 scene, without any
discrimination based on screen refresh rates?

I have no idea.  It's fun to think about, though.

OXYRON finally did it and gained the top spot! With a
surprising big distance they forced CREST to take
the 2nd place only!

REFLEX also got a lot of votes and so managed it to
jump from 5 up to 3. SMASH DESIGNS don't like that so
much, I guess, as they had to take their position
then instead.

The release of ALTERED STATES 50% brings more and
more votes now for TABOO... From 9 up to 7!

The guys from AFL are on place no. 1 again. SCS+TRC
had to make place for them and also for HITMEN by
going down to the 3rd place!

F4CG, CHROMANCE and LAXITY once again didn't move
and kept their positions...

ONSLAUGHT and MOTIV 8 changed their positions.
Probably MOTIV 8 will go more down soon after being
declared dead.

Highest new entry are FAIRLIGHT on the 9th position.

Unbelievable but true! CROSSBOW had to leave the top
spot after a lot of months! Surprising that it's
MR. SEX kicking him off it, even though he didn't
release anything for about two years now...

AEG is the loser of month with falling down from 2 to
5!

The TABOO guys MMS and K.M. are storming the charts
again... MMS climbed from 7 to 6 and K.M. reentered
the Top 10 on place no. 9.

MOONCHILD is the number one again! He jumped from 3
right up to 1! Also IGNORANCE got two places higher
and is now on the 2nd.

Last month's no. 1 BURGLAR took a free fall down to
the 4th position.

Highest new entry is HAIN on the 6th.
Also CBA, PLAYBOY and JAYDEE managed it to enter
the Top 10 again, but for them COUNT ZERO, DANZIG,
STING and NAPHALM had to leave.

DEEKAY seems to be the only constant factor here.
He stays the no. 1, even though ELECTRIC and
VALSARY came very close to him.

CRUISE climbed one place from 6 to 5, although he
hasn't released anything since ages...

RRR fell down two places and CREEPER had to leave
the Top 10!

It was sure, one day it would happen... And now it
finally is! MITCH+DANE aren't anymore on the top
spot! For the very first time they were kicked off it,
and that was done by no one less than JEFF.

Another winner this month is PVCF, who climbed from
9 right up to 3!

Many new entries this time... MOOG, PRAISER, DAF and

The activity on the US-BOARDS was on an really low
level, but the amount of RELEASES was quite good!

The surprise of the month was surely the comeback
of LEGEND in the WORLD OF FIRSTRELEASES!

Some days before the march was over it happened...
THE DUNGEON, the NO.1 US-BOARD went offline. Until
now, no informations concerning this, were made
public... . Hope it will be back as soon as possible!!!

Also on the other side of the Ocean something
happened... .

After some trouble with the power-supply, the
swedish board VIRTUAL LIGHT (CHROMANCE EHQ) went
finally back online again. You can again reach it
under the old number: +46-243-19552!

The best german BOARD ESCAPADE (ALPHAFLIGHT EHQ)
went offline, since the sysop lost interest in
running the BOARD. Actually he's thinking about
leaving the scene, but maybe his comrades in
ALPHAFLIGHT can make him to set the BOARD online
again. I really hope that XENOX will continue running
the BOARD, since it's the best BOARD still available
in good old GERMANY!
That was all with the NEWS. Hope we can report more
positive things next time... .

                                   THE DODGER
                                   ------------------

Like I stated in the last ISSUE, I've finally modified
my POINTSYSTEM. The old SYSTEM was made for the
ILLEGAL SCENE some years back, but the SCENE and
the RELEASES have changed, and so we've to go with
the time... .

Since COUNT ZERO was the first one, who invented a
POINTSYSTEM based on the QUALITY of a GAME/CRACK,
I'll give him a CREDIT for this. Thanx for your ideas!

GENERAL RULES:
------------------

The 24 hour and 6 month are still valid!

FAKE-RELEASES will be ignored and not mentioned!

GAMES/TOOLS written in BASIC (even with some ML-
routines included) will not receive any POINTS!
The same goes for any kind of GAMES amde with
the known GAMEMAKERS (SEUCK, ADVENTURE-CREATOR
etc.).

PREVIEWS don't have to be playable to get POINTS.

V2 PREVIEWS will get POINTS as long as it's released
by another GROUP than the 1st VERSION!

GAMES/TOOLS have to be in ENGLISH to get counted
as an RELEASE!

That was all about the NEW POINT-SYSTEM!
Actually I'm thinking about some modifications, but

FAIRLIGHT (swe, den, ger...)               -2,0 POINTS

First they shocked the public with putting out ORBIT
(1,4 POINTS) from LOADSTAR. The GAME was already
running PAL/NTSC!
Later another LOADSTAR-game made it to the drives...
GLORY QUEST (1,6 POINTS) was also running PAL/NTSC
without any changes!
After all they released the so called '100%' VERSION
of NETHER (-5,0 POINTS), which got released as
PREVIEW by CHROMANCE last year! After some checks
it was clear, that both versions are the same, and so
FAIRLIGHT deserves only RE-RELEASE POINTS for it!
February was an really bad month for the guys in
FAIRLIGHT... . And I really hope that the QUALITY of
their RELEASES will change better soon!

LAXITY (ger, den, lv...)                      5,1 POINTS
----------------------------------------------------------

The guys in LAXITY had an quite active month!
First they released LEISURE SUIT LEO 2 (1,0 POINTS)
from OUT OF ORDER SOFTWORKS. The GAME is running
PAL only! As the GAME got made using an ADVENTURE-
MAKER (by Dr.Zoom) they would get usually no POINTS,
but I gave them one EXTRA-POINT for all the work
they had with this one (translating from german...)!
Later they put out the PAL-VERSION of one of the
best titles this year... IT'S MAGIC (4,1 POINTS) from
STARDUST!

LEGEND (ger, bel, den...)                     -1,6 POINTS
----------------------------------------------------------

The LEGENDary ones hadn't much luck this month.
They started with two small games named PERFECT
WEAPON (1,7 POINTS) and QUEST FOR ATLANTIS (-5,0
POINTS). The second one turned out to be the same
GAME as SUNKEN ATLANTIS, which got released in 1987!
Later they released the promising PREVIEWS of
CAVEBALL (0,6 POINTS) and MYSTRIOUS WORLD (-1,0
POINTS). The 2nd one got released by THE RULING
COMPANY some years ago, so I gave MINUS-POINTS
for this one!
Some days passed and they continued with the really
nice PREVIEW of THUNDERZONE (0,7 POINTS) and
THUNDERBOMBS (1,4 POINTS). THUNDERBOMBS was
already running PAL/NTSC, so no fix was needed!
All in all it was a bad start for their COMEBACK in the
WAREZ-SCENE, but the promising PREVIEWS let me
hope that there're better RELEASES yet to come... !


SUCCESS+TRC (hol, ger, usa...)             5,3 POINTS
----------------------------------------------------------

The COOP returned once more and put out the fixed
VERSION of SKIDMARKS (5,3 POINTS) from SAMAR
PRODUCTIONS. The GAME included a small BUG, but
since it was also included in the ORIGINAL, I don't
reduced the amount of POINTS!


TRIAD (swe, ger...)                          0,5 POINTS
----------------------------------------------------------

The TRIADers released a really nice PREVIEW of an
PACMAN-clone named PACMACX (0,5 POINTS) and
and entered this LIST again after a quite long time!


That were all the RELEASES from the last month.
All in all we had 13 RELEASES in FEBRUARY, and I think
that's more than ok... .

But now over to the complete LIST... .

SUCCESS+TRC showed how a RELEASE should look like
and got the 1st PLACE! LAXITY made it again in the

Let's hope the MARCH won't have that much RE-
RELEASES, and I can concentrate on checking GAMES
and FIXES instead on comparing them!

a guy from the demoscene and a guy from the
crackingscene!
Here you can read a nice smalltalk with a wellknown
and very popular coder from the past... It's no one
less than:

So, enjoy this profile with that nice, legendary pal!
(C):  Welcome to the worldwide media and in this
      rather young magazine, SAM!
      I am sure most old sceners know who you are,
      but please be so nice and give the audience
      some information about yourself!

(S):  My handle is SAM and I am in a demogroup called
      BEYOND FORCE.
      My real name is Samuli Karevaara, so where the
      SAM comes from is pretty obvious.

      I was (lately turned to quite inactive) a coder,
      demos that I did code for are quite many, some
      that I remember are TYPICAL, POOR, PARTYTRAP
      (mind went blank, don't remember much more
      titles right now).

(C):  Brief but usefull info, hehe!
      So, what made you got out and buy a C=64 and
      why not an Amiga or PC instead?

(S):  Heh... I bought my 64 in 1985, so there was not
      much choice between 64/Amiga/PC... I had a
      Sinclair Spectrum sometime durin '84 but that
      was just a borrow machine from my dad's
      office (had it for about 6 months). Then we
      changed Spectrum to 64, a choice that I have
      never regretted (but have often thought as a
      great bit of luck that we did).

(C):  I guess no one, who's reading this here right
      now, never regretted getting that CBM64... :)
      Over the years you surely got a lot of friends
      in the scene... But who were the very first
      guys you got to know?

(S):  JAKE (now also in BEYOND FORCE, a late-member,
      you could say) was the first guy I did code
      with back in '85-'86 (first machine code,
      shamelessly ripped code parts, came out at
      June '86 or so, can't remember accurately) :-)

      One of my first swapping contacts was Tommi
      Lahtonen, a.k.a HAZOR. We used to swap
      programs on cassettes (yes) and with no
      handles, just our real names.

      Also a guy lately known as GRENDEL of
      BYTERAPERS was our first contact (JAKE
      swapped with GRENDEL).

      Most of the BEYOND dudes are my old and dear
      friends. I met TNT at the DDG copyparty (was
      that in '88?) and AXEMAN at the BYTERAPERS
      party ('89 I believe).

      ORIGO DREAMLINE also goes quite a way back in
      friendship with BEYOND FORCE. I swapped
      programs with (also some cassettes, but disks
      also) a guy now known as DESTINO of ORIGO.

      Original handles were kept secret in order to
      protect the innocent 14-year old kids that we
      were.

(C):  Hehe... As you already mentioned you have been
      a member of BEYOND FORCE for quite a while
      now... Could you please give us a history on
      from when you first started and what
      happened up to the present?

(S):  This would grow to be a too big story, sorry.
      I invite you all to check some background of

        Brief things here though: I started a group
        with JAKE, the group was called SWAP. HAZOR
        joined our group, but soon he thought that he
        wanted to have a group of his own.
        That group was called ZODUX (wasn't it so,
        Tommi?). ZODUX split up soon mainly because of
        some strange hostility towards them from the
        other groups in Finland that time. Very soon
        after that BEYOND FORCE was found, and it
        grew to be quite a group, as we all know... :-)

        We released a couple of small demos with SWAP,
        got few members, nothing big though.

        My code began to found better shapes anyway,
        and one time HAZOR asked that if I would like
        to do coding for BEYOND, and it felt a sane
        thing to do.

        Sad though that SWAP died, but I guess that
        was faith. :-)

(C):    And what do you think was your best personal
        achievement in the C64 scene?

(S):    I think my achievements were in maintaining a
        certain level in the technical complexity in the
        demoparts.

        My best and most innovative parts could have
        never been finished without a valuable help
        from TNT of BEYOND, who was teaching me to
        code and tought me some very nice tricks.

        I would rate my greatest achievement to be the
        first machine code program I did. It just
        changed colors in the screen and put out some
        random characters to the screen, but the
        speed of machine language compared to Basic
        was dazzling me. :-)

(C):    What is exactly your job in BF?  And what have
        been your past duties? Have you maybe also
        done something like painting or composing?

(S):    Mainly coding. I did some logos, but that's
        certainly not my area. Sadly enough I haven't
        been able to arrange time and effort to code a
        decent demopart since 1993.

(C):    And what about the present? Can we maybe
        expect a demo with coding by you, SOLOMON and
        other legendary coders under the BEYOND
        label?

(S):    I would say SOLOMON is long gone in the coding
        sense. GREMLIN has been active lately, but he's
        fading a bit too.

        It would be very nice to release a demo this
        year as this is our 10th anniversary. Coding
        would be done by me, GREMLIN, TNT and maybe
        some code from AXEMAN. But this is all
        dreaming as we're so lazy and busy with other
        projects nowadays.

(C):    Now it's time to give us your favourites in...

(S):    Coder.....: Hard to say, so many great ones.
                    HORIZON dudes and the 1001 CREW
                    were one of my early idols.

         Artist.....: I have forgotten his name, but
                      a guy from TRIAD (drew the cat
                      picture, most old sceners know
                      who I'm talking about.)

         Composer: Has to be ROB HUBBARD

         Cracker...: MR. Z was a name that stuck with
                     me (I heard he was like 12-13 years
                     when he did his most favourite
                         cracks, with the colorbar intro.)

         Demogroup.......: HORIZON

         Demo............: Too many great ones to
                           remember. LET'S DISCO by
                           HORIZON was a great old demo.

         Crackergroup: Don't know.

         Tool........: Z-PULATOR, a text editor by
                       Z-CIRCLE. :-)

(C):     Ah, interesting... Who were or still are your
         idols concerning coding?

(S):     HORIZON and 1001 CREW (also THE JUDGES and
         FCS of FINNISH GOLD).

(C):     I agree, they surely were great coders!
         So, what do you think should a demo contain to
         become something special for the public?

(S):     If somebody can do something that I don't
         know how it's done (at first, at least), then
         I'm impressed.
         To the public: no boring delays, big and smooth
         effects, something original.

(C):     What is your opinion about trackmos? Do you
         like them or do you more prefer the traditional
         "press space" ones?

(S):     I would say track demos are more appealing,
         but more a paint to do and require nice timing
         to avoid boring middle parts and "loading"
         parts.

(C):     And what is your advise to young groups in the
         demo scene to become as famous as BEYOND?

(S):     Invent something that hasn't been done yet.

(C):     What do you think of 4*4 effects and other PC-
         influenced routines, that are very popular and
         often used nowadays?

(S):     Doesn't matter too much of it's done well and
         not too many times. (To say that 1MHz can do
         what 100MHz can is nice.) :-)

         What I don't understand is that people do
         routines that have already been done on 64,
         but they do them worse. If you're going to
         copy, at least improve the routine (a lot,
         preferably).

(C):     And now we'll stress you a little bit with some
         brainstorming, hehe...

(S):     Internet: I like the possibilities of it, we'll see
                   what happens.
         Sex.......: Was great this morning (no bragging,
                     this is brainstorming). :-) 
         Demos................: My addiction.
         Cracks...............: Don't mind if they would go
                                away, I'm using some pirate
                                stuff though.
         Golden Days........... : Almost every time I start
                                  checking old 64 demos or
                                  browse 64 pages from the
                                  web, it brings tears to my
                                  eyes.
         Bill Gates...............: I do have hard feeling
                                    against him.
         Queen of England: Couldn't care less.
         Horizon.........: YES! Greetings to KJER,
                           BAGDER, MASTERMIND, JUDGE,
                           PERNOD...
         Dominators........: No real amazing demos from 
                           them. Mainly a cracker
                           group as I remember.
         Censor Design: Nice demos but a bit too violent
                        attitude.
         Magazines......: Too many of them.
         Netscape.......: Will turn into a Linux of
                          browsers: a reliable, a bit hard
                          to configure, choice for
                          hardcore computists, no real
                          financial success.

(C):     Have you ever been involved in a war or
         serious arguement with any other scener or
         group?

(S):     Not to mention, don't recall.

(C):     The CBM64 scene has become much worse
         compared to the golden days... So what do you
         think can possibly bring back the good old
         spirit? The return of old demo group?!?

(S):     C64 has lost its virginity, as have home
         computers. There's no going back, so let's
         make the future to be something to remember,
         too!

(C):     And which coders do you respect a lot?

(S):     1001 CREW, HORIZON, JUDGES, FCS of FINNISH
         GOLD.
         They achieved the impossible.

(C):     In the past groups like CREST, HORIZON, BONES,
         MEGASTYLE, UPFRONT and BF ruled and
         revolutionized the demo scene concerning the
         code as well as concerning the style...
         What is the difference between today's demo
         scene and the golden days, in your eyes?

(S):     Today there's not so much room to mess
         around with the register tricks, as they're
         mostly been found out. It's now more visual,
         though I miss the 50Hz routines.

(C):     And what has the C=64 provided to you as a
         person?

(S):     Everything I am.

(C):     Boah, seems it had a massive influence on your
         life!
         So do computers also play a role in your
         professional life? And have you been active on
         other machines active as well?

(S):     Commercial, PC ofcourse. (I work in a company
         that developes Internet solutions and
         Multimedia software.)
         Amiga was a nice machine, I did one (!) intro
         with it too. I like PC demos also, but of course
         just the best of them.

(C):     What about the Internet in general? Do you
         think that it's really the future for all
         computer scenes?

(S):     It's not the ultimate survive, scenes would go
         more underground if the Internet would cease
         to exist, but it might be for the best.
         I miss getting packages in the mail. However,
         as Internet is here, it's the way to go (in
         respect of the demo reviews, magazines,
         swapping etc.).

(C):     Now please make some comments on the
         following demogroups:

(S):     CREST: Was one of the first to have both
                nice code and nice graphics. :-)
         X-RATED....: Don't know them too well.

         BABOONS....: They had a period when they
                      released a demo each month or so,
                      but the demos were using very
                      much the same routines and
                      demoparts. No no for that kind of
                      things...

         ORIGO........: Finland's number 2! :-) 
                        Great personal friends of ours.

         MEGASTYLE      : Also released impressive demos.

         BLACK MAIL: DUTCH BREEZE is remembered to be
                     more delayed than WINDOWS 95. :-)

         TRIANGLE 3532: Don't know them too well.

         FLASH INC. ..: FLAMINGO was a great coder, a
                        bit round too much of the same
                        effects though. Amazingly
                        active coder back then.

         PANORAMIC......: Really nice design! And OMEGA 
                          SUPREME was a great coder!

         CAMELOT..........: GLASNOST's flexerzoomer was
                            one of the most amazing
                            routines I remember. Though not
                            technically "impossible", it was
                            done so well that I looked it for
                            an hour or so.

          BYTERAPERS: Early demos were not too
                      impressive. (No offence GRENDEL,
                      same goes for a lot of us. :-) ),
                      but MR. SEX has surely done some
                      nice 64 code.

         LIGHT........: Nice demos also, specially after
                        FLAMINGO joined. :-)

         REFLEX.........: Don't remember much from them.

         OXYRON.........: "Newcomers" to me. :-)
                          OXYRON did some amazing coding
                          and quite a lot of it!

         COSMOS: HANNES SOMMER did nice code, though
                 the look of the parts was often
                 unfinished (same goes for me, I know).

(C):     Sad but true... We are close to the end now...
         Anything you'd like to talk about?

(S):     Not much. Just that I want to thank everybody
         that was and is involved in the demo scene in
         general. Our parents had The Beatles,
         Woodstock, Vietnam etc... Demo scene has
         grown to bee as big a memory as those, but of
         course only in the positive way.

(C):     You surely got some greetings to your friends
         to shout out, haven't you?!?
         Here is your opportunity to send some hellos...

(S):     Other BEYONDers and everyone in ORIGO. That
         covers a lot of my scene friends that I've
         been in touch up to today.

         Of course I remember my eraly swapping
         partners and would love to hear from them. A
         guy from DOMINATORS sent me email a year ago
         or so, but the return address was incorrect
         and I couldn't answer. I'd like to reach all of
         my old friends atleast once more.

Yeah, right! Finally we are proud again to present
you an interview with a guy from the illegal part of
the scene!
He is a LEGENDary pal, hehe! His group made a
comeback some months ago... It's no one less than:

Enjoy this illegal profile! So, here we go...

[C]:  Feel warmly welcome GENE!
      So, to get started straight, let's talk a little
      bit about your person in general! What's your
      name, how old are you, what do you do in your
      sparetime and stuff like this!

[G]:  My name is Gene, I am 24 years old and live in
      Oslo/Norway. I study journalism and work as a
      night reporter for one of Norway's biggest
      newspapers. I enjoy playing soccer, and will
      love it when Norway beats all the crappy litlle
      wanna-be-countries this summer in France!

[C]:  But you should have an eye on Germany, hehe!
      Now over to your computer life... How did it all
      get started with you and the C64 scene?

[G]:  I got my first C64 in 84, I think. After being in
      some smaller groups, FIRKIN and I founded THE
      GUARDIANS INC in 86/87. After some time, we
      managed to get originals pretty fast. Then I
      bullshitted some software house, by saying
      that Commodore Norway would like to
      distribute BEDLAM with all new 64s sold - so I
      got BEDLAM like two weeks before anybody
      else. We released it, and in 87, COCO/ACE called
      and asked if FIRKIN and I wanted to join.

[C]:  So you're a smart betrayer, eh?!? ;)
      And which groups have you then been in?

[G]:  GUARDIANS, ACE, BROS, DOMINATORS, ILLUSION and
      LEGEND.

[C]:  What's your very own opinion about the legal
      part of the scene?

[G]:  Well, back then we considered them a bunch of
      losers... Even the good demogroups did some
      cracks and stuff from time to time.
      Today, to be honest. I mean, a legal scener...
      Ehh... Well, guess they are dedicated though...

[C]:  And what do you think is the most important
      thing with cracks... Speed or quality?

[G]:  The most important thing is not to release a
      version of a game which has 99 trainers, two
      highscore savers, is 10 blocks smaller and can
      stand on its hands and sing yankee doodle.
      When the first version works, that group has
      kicked everybody else. It is nice to see that
      people put a lot of effort into packing,
      training etc... But the most important thing (at
      least back then) was to get the game out -
      FIRST!

[C]:  Ah, I see, even though I've got another opinion,
      but that's not important here, is it?!?
      So, back in time the scene was quite different
      compared to today?!? Do you like this old
      school spirit more than the one nowadays?

[G]:  Of course it was much more fun back then.
      I mean, the flow of warez was great. The
      competition was great. The quality, the
      people... I mean, that were the days of the
      elite... Now a lot of nerds who never made it
      back in the 80's and early 90's pop up and
      think they rule the 64. If a group like
      ONSLAUGHT had tried to achieve anything back
      then, hehehe, damn, we would wipe our asses
      with them. What am I saying, we still are!
      Ah well...

[C]:  And what do you think made the CBM64
      something special?

[G]:  Everybody says THE ATMOSPHERE... It sounds
      like a cliche, maybe it even is. Yet it is true.
      There was something so very special.
      And of course, I loved all the wars.

[C]:  And what was then the worst thing in the C64,
      in your opinion?

[G]:  I DID not dislike anything in particular. Now I
      DO dislike all the rookie wanna-be's who claim
      eliteness. I mean get real. It took them 12
      years to achieve about the same status as I
      had in 86. And it is not even comparable!

[C]:  Interesting attitude!
      You said that it isn't comparable... So, do you
      think, that the CBM64 scene is dead?

[G]:  Ehh, I am not quite sure. I see some guys have
      struggled hard to keep it together. And now
      the C64 web-bbs' pop up. Oldtimers return. But
      it won't be the same without the phonecalls,
      conferences, constant flow of quality warez...
      Not dead, but on its back... Soon to be put out...

[C]:  Yeah, it's sad but true... :(
      Now over to something completely different:
      What about some brainstorming?!?

[G]:  Boards...: WILD WAREZ, FORUM
      Phreaking: Conferences! Busted.
      Internet...: Work
      Parties....: Chicks - no computers.
      PC.........: Work
      Alcohol: Famous and beer.
      Sex....: The question they still ask WAD:
               "What sex are you?"

[C]:     Hihi... And now we want to get to know your
         faves concerning...

[G]:     Cracking Group: SCG
         Cracker.......: WEETABIX

[C]:     In one of the answers at the interview's start
         you mentioned that you liked the wars in the
         scene... So, it's hard to guess that you had a
         lot of wars, eh?!?

[G]:     Ehh, I could start mentioning them... I guess I
         have been in about 200-300 wars on the C64...
         Maybe even more. Just since November, I have
         been in like 10-20...

[C]:     Boah, seems you're a really bad boy, hehe!
         But I gotta agree, wars are interesting and
         mostly really funny in the scene!
         Now to the question that interests everyone
         in the scene at the moment, I guess... LEGEND
         had a revival some time ago... But until now you
         guys haven't shown any activity through
         releases since then... And your comeback
         caused quite some discussions... So, what's
         definitely up with you guys?!? Is there going to
         come something from you soon?

[G]:     I have been very busy the past month, so I
         have no idea where we stand right now. But one
         who waits for something good never waits in
         vain (and other cliches)...

[C]:     Quite open answer, hehe!
         Okay, let's leave this topic, as it seems that
         you don't want to talk about this... ;)
         What do you think of the Internet? Could it be
         the future for our CBM64?

[G]:     Well, it will make the rookies meet the true
         elite. Hehe, I am getting a bit bigheaded here,
         but hey... Yeah, the net can keep the memories
         alive...

[C]:     Now a strange question, I know... Make a
         suggestion: How many guys are right now in the
         scene? And how many where in the scene at its
         best times?

[G]:     Sceners? Let's see. You got me, WESTBAM,
         ANTITRACK, BURGLAR... I think that just about
         covers it. That's four...
         At the best? Maybe like 200 good, famous and
         elite.

[C]:     A tricky one, eh?!? But you passed it quite
         well, hehe!
         And what importance did the C64 have in your
         life, overall?!?

[G]:     Hehe, in real life, I would have been in prison
         if I had done the same things to people as in
         the scene. I don't think it gave me that much.
         My English is great, and that is probably due
         to me C64 career. I don't know jack about
         computers, still can't paint, code etc... I dunno.
         It gave me a lot of fun, and some weird
         friends.

[C]:     So, the sad moment has to come in every
         interview... But we nearly reached the end!

This time we can give you a closer look at a brand
new logo collection. It is...

          >  DOPE feat. PETE/CHROMANCE     <

Well, let's start it straight away...

This Koala-logo show's intro starts with an
inscrolling CHROMANCE logo. Its letter are dominated
by brown and are a little bit wild and very thin.
The outlines were painted very bad... Hard to explain
how... The whole thing takes about a third of the
screen.
                                                > 20%

Then comes in a PRESENTS logo with nearly the same
style. But it looks a little bit better than the other
one...
                                                  > 25%

On the next screen you then can see a DOPE logo.
Here the letters have some kind of "written" style.
It is too simple! The whole thing takes about a third
of the screen, but there's too much black and blank,
just like in most of his logos...
                                              > 18%

At the bottom of the screen there is a quite nice
5X5 scroller. The charset is great! The letters'
shapes are interesting and the fillins were done
very well, too. A nice 3 colour charset...
                                               > 70%

Then the real show starts. First logo is a quite
known ONSLAUGHT logo, which was used in an intro by
TMM, if my memory serves me right. Here PETE again
used his typical style with some kind of "written"
letters. In the background is a grey board. It looks
okay and takes about a quarter of the screen.
                                                 > 53%

Up next is CHROMANCE logo from 1995. It is very
simple, just like most logos by PETE, even though
this one is a little bit different concerning the
style. All letters are capital ones and dominated by
grey.
                                                 > 24%

Then we are forced to see this collection's worst
piece. It reads ONSLAUGHT and was originally made
for swinging left/right or displaying in the border,
as it's wider than the screen. But it's simply
displayed in two rows... Bad! But that has nothing to
with the art itself, so no hard feelings because of
this... The letters' shapes are really ugly, as well as
the fillin.
                                                  > 10%

Upcomming is an AVANTGARDE one, which takes about
a quarter of the screen. It features many colours,
what looks okay. The fillin is okay, too. But the
outlines are so fucking ugly again, that it really
hurts to look at that one.
                                                  > 19%

The "5 YEARS CHROMANCE" one is a bit better. You can
see a huge 5 with some bad outlines again. This time
PETE totally forgot to fade the colours a little bit
at the outlines to make them look more smooth. The
YEARS logo seems to be ment as a tag and look okay.
The CHROMANCE part then isn't that good. Each letter
has the same filling, what is quite boring in this
case.
                                                  > 38%

The RESOURCE logo brings a little light into this
collection, even though it is quite small, but maybe
that's one of the things that makes it look good. The
letterforms are good, as well as the colourfadings.
                                                > 61%

Up next is another logo for RSC. Its letters are
blocky and mostly hold in lightgrey and stuff. Some
parts of the colourfadings were copied.
                                                 > 36%

ESCAPE is the group the next logo was done for. The
"E"s are painted as stripes with the three colours
of the hungarian flag. "SCAP" is in PETE's typical
written style, what looks bad here, in my very own
opinion.
                                                 > 13%

Then the PRESENTS logo from the intro appears
again... Strange!
The next one reads PETE OF ESCAPE. "PETE" and
"ESCAPE" are in PETE's typical style again and also
feature the same colours in their fill-in. The "OF"
was done in nothing but blue... Boring!
The whole thing takes the full screen, but again all
in all there is too much blank! Nothing in the
background, like in most of this artist's logos.

A CHROMANCE logo comes next. And a really good one!
It features only three colours, dominated by cyan.
I guess it is known to most guys, because it was
once used in an intro by LION. The fill-in is good,
although it was partly copied. The letters shapes
are simply great! The best piece in this collection!
Btw, also this is too wide for the normal screen, but
again it was only displayed in two rows instead of
showing it swinging or in the sideborder.
                                                 > 71%

Then another RSC logo gets displayed. A very small
one, takes about a sixth of the screen. The S is
painted as the Dollar symbol. It's all mostly held in
cyan... Too simple!
                                                  > 32%

Later on you can see a "5X5 colourful font", which
isn' that colourful at all. Again the outlines were
done in a bad way... The style is just the typical one
for PETE... But not bad.
                                                  > 41%

HIRADO reads the next one. It is the first one with
no blank background! It takes about a quarter of the
screen and features only three colours. The filling
is partly copied...
                                                > 39%

Then it's time for a "CHR 1996" logo. CHR stands in
the middle, while "19" is written on the left and "96"
on the right side. The background is held in lightgrey
and has the letters in it. 3 colours only again...
                                                  > 27%

The next one is a CHROMANCE board and features a
nail or something like this in each of its corners to
make it look like a wood-board. The board itself
has some simple colourfadings and three colours
only. The letters look like scratched in. Not very
nice...
                                                  > 25%

Another "too big" ONSLAUGHT logo... This one's
letters look quite interesting. They somehow remind
me of winter and snow... Hehe! Maybe because of so
much white?!? The colours in the fill-in are faded,
what looks cool here, I must admit!
                                                 > 56%

This show's last piece is another three colour
CHROMANCE logo. The letterforms are good, as well as
the fadings.
                                               > 57%

After this logo the collection restarts.
So, after calculating all this points together I come
to the conclusion that this collection deserves...

That's low average... I have to say that I was a bit
disappointed by that logo collection. I expected more
from PETE. Most of his logo have the same style and
look very equal! It is quite obvious that the artist
lacks of inspiration... The backgrounds of his logos
are mostly simply black... That's too simple and
boring! PETE should invest more time and ideas in
his logos...

Welcome to the demo-reviews once again! After
having found three quite active composers for the
demo-reviews, we think that we can presents you
this chapter on a regular basis in the future!
This time a huge "Thank you!" must go to TRIDENT of
ACTIVE, who made a great job this time... As he is a
great composer and a very skilled programmer, he
reviewed the musics as well as the coding! Respect!
Anyway, this time we can bring you a closer look at
the competition winning demo from THE PARTY 7.  Itis...

This is the winner demo from THE PARTY 7, and it
includes some of the most amazing routines seen on
the 64 seen so far. As the name implies, this demo is
a complete carbon copy of the original demo SECOND
REALITY by FUTURE CREW, the winner in the PC demo
compo at the ASSEMBLY 93, and one of the most well
known demos on PC. SECOND REALITY by FUTURE CREW
is ranked by most PC owners as THE PC demo, and it
surely contains a very good mixture of code, design,
graphics and music.

INTRO
- -- -
After decrunching, you can choose either to
autostart the demo, or to get an MS-DOS prompt (!)
from which you can start the demo as well as reading
some textfiles. When started, the demo begins with a
setup menu, where you can select your soundcard
(choose between SB, GUS and SID) and some other PC-
setup stuff. This menu looks exactly like it's PC
equivalent, and when you choose a soundcard other
than SID, you get the MS-DOS prompt again with a
message like "soundcard not detected".
Now the demo begins with an intro, where a
landscape scrolls by from right to left, and the
credits for the demo is displayed. Pompous music is
played, and when the credits have all been shown,
you can hear a big spaceship coming from behind
you. It flies over your head as a few expanded
sprites, looking suspiciously animated. Chasing it
are some smaller animated fighters, and when they
are out of sight, a huge explosion is heard, and a
dust cloud blows in your eyes, completely covering
your eyesight (except the border) with white.
Quite impressive.

The landscape features three colours only, mostly
dominated by blue. It is well pixelled and looks quite
okay.

PART ONE
- ---- -
Now the demos starts for real, and the music starts
to play.

An (almost) exact copy of FC's "SECOND REALITY"
logo is shown. It shows a strange monster (half
human, half dragon) stepping forward in front of a
simple white background. "SECOND" is written at the
top and "REALITY" at the bottom of the screen. It is
all a little bit too simple, and all that white doesn't
look that good even though the monster itself looks
good.

Then this picture is transformed to a chessboard
which falls down to the floor. It is mostly held in
grey and is meant to look 3D-like, what was partly
achieved by the artist.

Then from above a glenzing 3D-object falls down and
is bouncing around in 128X128 pixels resolution
(expanded sprites). The chessboard disappears and
a larger objects comes down from above. Only every
second scanline of the big object is shown.
Nevertheless they are fast.
Coming up next is a dot tunnel, frequently seen in
elder PC demos. There are quite a lot of dots in
greyscale, and the illusion of movement works well.
One of the better dot tunnels seen on C64, in my
opinion.
Some interference circles then cover the screen.
Fast and quite smooth they even tech-tech a bit.
They fade away acompanied by a sample from the
original tune by SKAVEN/FUTURE CREW.
The next effect are some orthogonal lines, like
those in DAWNFALL, if you remember them, this time
larger (full screen), but every second scanline is
black.

PART TWO
- ----- -
Bang! A picture shows up... Again it features a
strange big guy stepping forward wearing something
like a breastplate. The face looks a little bit
strange, could have been done much better! Also the
colourfadings in the background aren't that good.

Then the picture goes away just as fast as it got
there. A small bug probably, because the screen is
black for quite a while thereafter.
The next effext is really very impressive...

A picture of some green leaves shows up on the
screen. In the background is some kind of blue
water with some nice colourfadings. The leaves were
not done very well. But the good colourchoice for
the background and its good fadings make it look
quite good.

Then a scrolltext scrolls over the water, wrapped on
the water's surface. A very nice effects on PC and
it looks just the same on the C64. The scroll is made
up of expanded sprites.
Now, an evil-looking man looks at you in 4X4
resolution. A blue lens drops down and goes over the
face. The lens disappears and a sample is heard,
"I am not an atomic playboy". After this, the face is
rotozoomed, in 4X4 resolution. Very fast and nice.
When this is over, a hires plasma with a lot of
colours is FLD'd up on the screen. Though using less
colours, it looks very much alike its PC equivalent.
The plasma is shown with a number of colours and
movements, and then a texture mapped cube zooms
up in 4X4. The sides are mapped with a plasma
pattern. It moves very fast and zooms up even
bigger to become very impressive. This is very good
and fast code here. I am impressed!
Some 3D bobs move around on the screen and cast a
shadow on the floor. There are quite a number of
them, but they aren't TOO fast. They still look good
though. A female voice says "10 SECONDS TO
TRANSMISSION", which again is a sample from the
original tune. Those samples really make the feeling
be the same as on the PC!

A fullscreen picture of three raytraced marbles is
shown in blue. They all reflect each other, and the
waterous surface on which they reside. I must admit
that the mirroring looks really great! Respect for
that! Also the colourfadings and proportions were
done very well. Nice...

Then up from the water a strange grey pattern
arises, and reflects in the spheres. This looks very
nice, and, did I not know better, I could mistake my
C64 for a PC at this time!
The next effects is probably the least good one in
this demo. It is supposed to be voxel landscape made
up of sine waves. but it does not look very much like
it does on PC.
From the top of the screen a picture falls down and
bounces on the lower border. the picture expands
horizontally as an effect of the bounce. Very
animated and very nice.

This picture shows a guy riding on a big white
monster (or should it be a polar-bear?). It is all held
in grey and very strangely pixelled - it looks like
scanned! I guess it isn't painted, because later on
there is no credit given for this picture! Anyway, it
would have looked much better in Hires!

PART THREE
- ------ -
As I knew what would come now, I held my breath. In
the original demo, a gouraud shaded 3D world would
be flown over, and to my astonishment, this was the
case on the C64 aswell! In 4X4 greyscale you are
flown through a city and over the rooftops. Looks
impressive, but I have my doubts; it is probably
animated, though a long animation. (If it isn't,
however, it is extremely good code!!)

Then we get to see this by now well-known SMASH
DESIGNS logo/picture with something like a club with
iron spikes on it... Guess you know this one! The
logos are grey "written" letters and look okay.
There's nothing special about it...

Coming up next are the credits for each "part", or
rather, each effect. A small screenshot of the
effects is shown in the upper part of the screen
and the credits below it.
When the credits are over, an upscroll with 1X1 font
scrolls over the screen, and the tune flows from
being a PC cover, to a native C64 tune in multi play.
The tune is quite nice, in my opinion.

This is the final PC-killer demo. It could not be more
PC-inspired than this (I would like to see
STARS/NOOON on C64!). The code is very good, but
one that made me irritated was that the border was
black all the demo through. Yes, this is a PC
immitation and should not be in more than 320X200,
but it doesn't look too good on C64.

The original music is very good, and KB made a very
good job "translating" it to the C64, and the
samples REALLY make the music sound like the PC!

The loader in this demo is not a very good one,
though. It prompty failed to load the demo when I had
a second drive (9) connected! This is a SMASH
DESIGNS trademark; their latest demos have all this
malfunctions. Please, DCP, fix this to your next
production!

Graphically this demo doesn't feature many
highlights. Most graphics are just average. It looks
like AEG did them in a hurry or didn't have fun
painting them... But it is understandable, because of
the close PC-adaption the artist hasn't got many
possiblities to innovate...
