------------------------------------------------------------
R3L4X M4G4Z1N3* APRIL 1997 edition (issue # 20),
the magazine for the generation with an eye for the
FINER details in the CBM 64 scene, was brought to
you by PHUTURE (Software & Marketing), your fa-
vourite disk-magazine releasing game label.

                       ---------------------------
                       |... internal affairs ... |
                       ---------------------------
As usual in a long period like this some changes oc-
cured, changes which are necessary in order to
bring in new inspiration and ideas to bring back the
motivation for this and further issues.

Twenty issues and seven and a half year made us a
little bit nostalgic, so we decided to combine NOSTAL-
GIC motives and modern techniques to design the
graphics for this edition, motivated by this edition's
slogan PAST TO PRESENT, 1989-1997.

The first remarkable change did take place in the
distribution department. After our worldheadquarter
"Holiday Inn Cambodia" and our US headquarter "The
Evil Island" went down we started to look out for an
ACCEPTABLE replacement, it is surely an UNDER-
STATEMENT to define our NEW worldheadquarter just
as a substitution. "EDGE OF MIDNIGHT" is actually the
FASTEST CBM 64 board online, running on a 20 MHz
SUPER-CPU from CMD and was accessable through
several tollfree numbers in the United States, Europe
and even Australia.

As announced in the previous edition VIOLATOR got
promoted after the release of Relax # 19 and will ser-
ve as main editor in the upcoming editions, mainly
maintaining the MAIL CHARTS and ADVERTISEMENTS
chapter(s)

In the forthcoming issues we try to provide you with
exclusive news about the major Polish groups and
reports about the most important Polish parties. As
an introduction we can proudly present an article
about the Polish scene these days. The project is
using the codename Relax-goes-Poland. The Polish
bureau is actually lead by our correspondant DR.
SOFT.

Due to the fact that certain magazines tried to insult
the magazine or its editors in a childish and incompe-
tent way. Normally a proof for the contrary wouldn't
have been possible, still there exist the danger that
weak informed persons might believe in what they
have read elsewhere. The chapter's title tells it all,
NOT WORTHY.

Once again our highly respected co-editor and full-
time student PRI did not find the find to deliver any
music reviews for the demo reviews chapter, with
FANTA a very competent CBM 64 musician took over
the job this time, helping us this time as guest editor
in order to present a complete demo reviews chap-
ter. Many thanks for your effort, Alexander!

Furthermore we would like to pay our respect to the
two other guest editors this issue, Ned/Alpha Flight
1970)Net*Phreakers and Druid/Agony Design who
have subscribed very interesting contributions. Be
sure to check them out carefully.

                           --------------------
                           | ... Net News ... |
                           --------------------
While other people are talking about the Internet we
have already been active in several fields to use the
advantages a communication system like this offers.

The DIGITAL VOTESHEET has been introduced about a
year ago and became a steady factor in the Relax
voting system for both, MAIL and BOARD CHARTS. The
idea is based on the ASCII votesheets certain Amiga
scene magazines spread along with their editions, vo-
tesheets which have REPLACED the legendary PAPER
votesheets some years ago. The DIGITAL VOTESHEET
does NOT depend on any platform and is getting
spread via e-mail.
RELAX MAGAZINE has started a new ERA with that in-
novative conception, meanwhile this successful idea
got adapted by other CBM 64 related scene maga-
nes aswell as by other platform based productions,
this is for sure a good proof that the CBM 64 scene
is still capable to introduce NEW ideas in the good old
tradition of the former SUPREMACY of OUR scene.

Another voting system has been used PRACTICALLY
the first time for the Relax Magazine, too, it is the
ONLINE VOTER we are refering to. The first CBM 64
related online voter was introduced by the SHOUT!
magazine in late 1995, an indeed fine system, unfor-
tunately it got NEVER used due to the fact that the
main editor Warp has left the scene once again.
With the GROWING mass of CBM 64 related Internet
surfers this conception has met the interest of lots
of others magazines offering an online vote option
these days, and surely there is no need to point out
that other system related publications have copied
it after being approved in the CBM 64 scene, too.

-------------
| FTP-SITES | have become quite POPULAR over the
-------------past two years, being the host to look
out for FRESH warez as well as for golden OLDIES.
The leading addresses are THE DIGITAL DUNGEON
(Success & The Ruling Company)Relax Magazine) and
GANGSTA'S PARADISE (Chromance)Onslaught).

* ACTIVE is now taking part in the league of FTP-SITE
maintainers, the site is called RASH REFECTION and
   it is quite FAST (ftp://ftp.ludd.luth.se/pub/c64)!

* ACID NATURE is the name of a quite new FTP-site in
Latvia, maintained by Raver/Phantasy. Actually AFL
is testing the site and considering about running it
as Internet HQ in the future (ftp.ogre2.vsk.edu.lv).

* THE BADLANDS, T-Pau's huge ftp-site, will serve as
Internet headquarter for Domination and Vanda-
lism News in the future (ftp://ftp.giga.or.at/pub/
   c64/).
-------------
| HOMEPAGES | are the first step into direction
------------- MULTIMEDIA, offering the option to
present texts, graphics, animations and musics. Being
created in HyperText Markup Language lots of home-
pages already have taken advantage of extensions
like JAVA giving the opportunity to realise other in-
teresting ideas, just like scrollers etc.
Lots of groups and magazines have already introdu-
ced interesting projects, still "IN MEDIAS RES" (Zike/
FairLight) is surely a MUST for the surfers.

* COMMODORE SCENE, a CBM 64 FANZINE and DISTRI-
BUTOR from United Kingdom, has entered the in-
formation highway and can be approached here, too
   (http://members.aol.com/Commodor64/C64SCENE/
   Commodore.htm).

* DANKO/Censor Design opened his PRIVATE home-
page, containing almost all of his SCENE RELATED
   computer musics (http://www.danko.censor.net/).

* DIGITAL EXCESS have set up their own homepage,
too, containing lots of SCREENSHOTS from their
GAME PROJECTS aswell as a DOWNLOAD function
   (http://www.castrop-rauxel.netsurf.de/homepages
   /thomas.koncina/).

* JEROEN TEL (MANIACS OF NOISE) has set up his
THIRD homepage. After the one for commercial af-
   fairs (http://home.worldonline.nl/&mon) and the fun
   orientated one (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood
/Hills/5485) this one is the place to look out for
AUDIO FILES and has the function of a CD-SHOP
   (http://www.xs4all.nl/&mon).

* THE FORCE has opened its official homepage, too,
featuring exclusive releases and hot tunes from
Sidchip Scratchers never having left Israel so far,
aswell as animations and pictures update once per
   month (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/
   Pines/4376/dr-j.html).
----------------
| MAILINGLISTS | offer the service to mail out an
---------------e-mail to a from the lists' maintai-
ners predefined target group. Unlike in the manual
mode you do NOT need to fill in all addresses sepera-
tely, so it is quite COMFORTABLE to spread public
news and warez.
Actually there are THREE steady mailing lists, hosted
by CHROMANCE (Macx), HITMEN (Peacemaker) and
MOTIV 8 (Iceball). Motiv 8's was the VERY FIRST to
launch the market and being the MOST FREQUENTED
one. Chromance's is mainly used to spread Macx's
news collection. Hitmen's is regulary used to spread
the digital votesheet and legal Hitmen warez. As all
three lists are almost covering the same (amount of)
people a ranking here would be rather USELESS.

------------------------------------------------------------
  | ... Votesheet Spreaders and News suppliers ... |
------------------------------------------------------------
The PAPER votesheets have been spread, as usual,
by our very own ZAPOTEK, VIOLATOR and DR. SOFT,
who all are serving as AUTHORIZED mail distributors,
aswell as by FUNXILLA.
The DIGITAL VOTESHEET has been spread by PEACE-
MAKER using his mailing list aswell as by using MOTIV
8's GREAT mailing list, too.

The NEWS have been supplied and confirmed by
Burglar, CLARENCE, Crossfire, Didi, DR. SOFT, GLENN
RUNE GALLEFOSS, Jazzcat, Junkie, LION, Macx, Mr.
Wax, PEACEMAKER, Rough, Sentinel, SPLATTERHEAD,
Tyron and everyone else supporting this project in
any way. Many thanks for your support.

This edition's content looks like this:
------------------------------------------------------------
The GLOBAL REPORT provides you once again with
the best possible news support. The regular RELEA-
SE CHARTS and YEARLY RELEASES offers a quite
perfect overview about ALL releases made so far
aswell as about the leading cracking groups these
days. CHARTS COMPILATION contains this time the
linked standart BOARD and MAIL CHARTS chapters.
As different hosts insulted and attacked Relax for
several reasons we felt free to present the proves
to the contrary in a chapter called NOT WORTHY, a
name having been given as a content like this is nor-
mally not worthy to be spread in a top magazine like
this one. FREESTYLE is ment as an introduction of
our ambitious Relax-goes-Poland project. Talkshow
guest in our INTERVIEW section this time is ANONYM/
Padua. The DEMO REVIEWS are giving an overview
about the major productions being released so far
aswell as having expanded views on Graffity's demo
"Higher Love" and Smash Designs' "Triage". PARTY
RADAR is giving an overview about the events of the
past few weeks aswell as a report about the Mekka &
Symposium party held in Fallingbostel/Germany. Last
but not least there is the ADVERTISEMENTS chapter
for those people looking for new contacts.

Global Report

                         * GLOBAL REPORT *
------------------------------------------------------------
Facts, facts, facts, ... Welcome to THE news journal
you can care about because WE do care about the
content.

The seek for proven information has found its end as
you have finally found your favourite and most RELI-
ABLE HOST around the globe in this lonely universe.
Fantasy stories, expections or own opinions about
the latest happenings in the world we use to live in
can be found in several wrong places, this is the pla-
ce for getting PURE information, prepared and
collected and proven by EXPERIENCED and QUALI-
FIED reporters, always hunting for the latest in the
CBM 64 scene, the place we still use to life in.

                      * ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 *
------------------------------------------------------------
Having passed with 1996 one of the most successful
years of its younger history the flight seems to con-
tinue in the same flying speed in 1997, too.

EDGE OF MIDNIGHT is the new worldheadquarter for
the flight, replacing Holiday Inn Cambodia and The
Evil Island which both went down in late 1996, sysop
RUG RAT has left his former comrades in Chromance
to discover new galaxies with the flight. EOM still re-
mains NET*PHREAKERS and now additionally RELAX
MAGAZINE worldheadquarter, too.
Two useful implants were added to the demo section.
With GOLDHAND, remaining in Samar as double-mem-
ber, joining as programmer and ALG, who is aswell a
double-member in Lepsi Developments, as graphic ar-
tist the scene is waiting with impatience for further
legal productions. Last but not least the mail distri-
bution got enlarged with ARGOS, former Sunrise mem-
ber.

Good news for all calling card abusers: THE ESCAPA-
DE is NO LONGER black-listed as it got a new number
aswell as the official AFL homepage which got a new
URL. The flight has expanded its activities in the net
by testing the FTP-site ACID NATURE. It' still quite
uncertain if it will serve as official AFL Internet HQ
in the future.

After standing in the shadow of Ignorance for quite a
while SKINHEAD decided to leave for F4CG in order
to celebrate a reunion with his former comrades in
Genesis Project. Finally CHOTAIRE, who recently left
Germany to live in Kuwait, has been set on the inac-
tive list until his new status has been defined.

Current Alpha Flight memberstatus looks like (= 21):
ALG, Archangel, Argos, Baldhead, Blaze, Caledonian,
Calypso, Danzig, Flash, Goldhand, Ignorance, Mad
Hatter, Marc, Ned, Rayden, Rug Rat, Styx, Violator,
Wizard, Xenox and Zapotek

                            * CHROMANCE *
------------------------------------------------------------
The tragedy around Jazzy D has proven once again
how unimportant all those small scene affairs are,
that there are much more important things left to
care about.

The Chromance posse enlarged their overseas acti-
vities. With NATAS and FUNGUS joining in as double
members, remaining in Carcass, two talented fixers
and programmers have been added. Fungus has
dropped TSD for Chromance. Leaving the American
demo group Style SPHERE entered as music compo-
ser. Back in Europe another with CUBEHEAD another
composer joined, former member of Resource and
Onslaught. He joined Zyron's music label Oxsid Plane-
tary as his second group. STASH, former member of
Active, joined in to support the mail distribution.
JINX is back, re-entering his alltime love as double
member next to his membership in Hitmen.

Becoming the victim of a tragical accident the Hunga-
rian based team has lost a member and good friend,
JAZZY D died on February 16th, 1997. Repairing his
car in the garage the car has fallen down and killed
him immidiately. A big loss for Chromance, a big loss
for the scene. May he rest in peace.
RUG RAT has left for Alpha Flight 1970, causing that
Edge Of Midnight is NO Chromance board any longer.

Chromance is now sharing their FTP-site GANGSTA'S
PARADISE with Onslaught after Hitmen has been
booted for non-supporting the site at an acceptable
level. GP has been down for a few days caused by a
hardware failure at the server's address, a fate
being shared by HALL OF FAME, Jean's homepage
supporting his CD project. Meanwhile both are up and
running again.

Current Chromance memberstatus looks like (= 26):
Bolee, Cubehead, Deviant, Druid, Fungus, Griff, Ja-
nee, Jaydee, Jean, Jinx, Macx, Mr. Wax, Natas, Pete,
Rough, Scratcher, Skud, Sphere, Spermbird, Stash,
Syco, Will, Wozio, XXL, Zakk and Zar

              * FANTASTIC 4 CRACKING GROUP *
------------------------------------------------------------
After a long abstinence some fantastics have made
it up to the US boards again, perhaps the sign of an
increased activity level? Their long promised warez
rush started with a RE-RELEASE and turned out to
be a complete failure by getting beaten by the con-
curence with certain releases.

SKINHEAD has left Alpha Flight 1970 to join the fan-
tastics as main cracker and fixer, being finally re-
united with his former Genesis Project comrades.

DERBYSHIRE RAM decided to leave F4CG caused by
their steady inactivity and lack of communication, la-
ter on Skinhead convinced him to return. JACK ALIEN
has left for Hitmen, following his former Avantgarde
group member Cupid who left F4CG for Hitmen a while
ago. According to the F4CG organisation both DARK-
LORD and DEFF have left the CBM 64 behind, espe-
cially with Deff having retired all speculations about
a possible return of AVANTGARDE have stopped now.
Last but not least with ARISTO and WORM two further
members have left F4CG.

JUCKE requested to publish the fact the he is NOT a
member of F4CG, unlike some people just like the ma-
gazine Domination claim. He prefered to stay group-
less unlike his former comrades from Genesis Pro-
ject teaming up with the fantastics back in time.

Current F4CG memberstatus looks like (= 20):

Antitrack, Bitman, Derbyshire Ram, Devil, Draz, Goz,
Intruder, Maja, Motley, Mr. Alpha, Neotec, Newscopy,
Playboy, Sixx, Skinhead, Smasher, Solar, Stasi, Walker
and Zyron

                                * HITMEN *
------------------------------------------------------------
The hitmen have shown a massive presence at the
Mekka & Symposium aswell as at the X-97. Unfortu-
nately with PEACEMAKER another leading profile has
reduced his activity level. Time will tell what direction
Hitmen is heading to.

By recruiting JACK ALIEN from F4CG another very
high ranked cracker has been added to the status,
taking over the job as main fixer after Peacemaker
stated that he will only concentrate on coding and on
a decreased basis on his h/p activities. Other sour-
ces lately reported that Jack Alien will concentrate
on cracking golden oldies for the label "Remember",
a group founded by HOK and Freestyle. In order to
supply the demo section with outstanding sound-
tracks KRISTIAN ROSTOEN has been convinced to
become a member, still remaining in his groups Shape
aswell as Bluez Muz. According to their spokesman
Tyron another new member got recruited. His handle
is TMP and he uses to be a coder from Bosnia-Her-
zogovina.

There have been rumours claiming that DIVERSE has
left the scene. According to Diverse it's true that
his magazine MISH MASH won't be released anymore.
He pointed out to be still a member of Hitmen, but at
the moment he is inactive and it is quite uncertain if
he will continue his scene career using his handle as
he prefers his real name, Blazej Strazak, but like
said before, it's still quite UNCERTAIN.

Hitmen has been booted from Chromance's FTP-site
"Gangsta's Paradise" due to lacking support, a fact
confirmed by the Hitmen officials, explained with
speed problems and concentrating their activity to-
wards their homepage project(s). Seven constructed
both Hitmen and Digital Excess homepages while Ty-
ron has been responsible for the Domination home-
page.

Current Hitmen memberstatus looks like (= 29):
Balance, Banshee, Burn, Chaotic, Cupid, Diverse,
Groepaz, Hi-Lite, Jack Alien, Jayce, Jinx, Kristian
Rostoen, Luke, Marcus, Moonchild, Motion, Peacema-
ker, Racoon, Rammy, Raze, Sabotage, Seven, Skud,
Stan, TMP, Tranziie, Tyron, Vortex and Zore

Laxity still does not belong to the top cracking crews
but made a name for themselves with some good qua-
lity versions. An expansion of the group's acitivity to
the demo scene has been already announced.

A bunch of new members enlarged the German based
group. MENDRAKE, a person having caused some MA-
JOR scandals yet, joined in as double member to get
active in Motiv 8, too, running his board THE DRA-
GON'S TOWER for both teams. ANIMALO, a former
Accept member, re-entered the scene and teamed up
as mail and modem trader. GOAT of Disorder, a follow-
up to Endless Piracy, has been recruited as double
member to care about mail distribution and the deli-
verance of originals. Another new double member is
DAN DEE/Nostalgia, a graphic artist, and the last one
in the row of double members is HOLDEN/Vulture, a
mail trader.

DIDI has joined Nostalgia to be his second group with
the aim to serve them as a cracker and coder. TRUSS
joined DARK CRYSTAL as first group, screwing LXT
back into the second row.

JER and VAGUE have been set on the inactive list,
but Vague returned later on to the active status.

MANIK has left Laxity to concentrate on CommoBam,
later on he left for the re-activated forces of Am-
nesia.

Current Laxity memberstatus looks like (= 11):
Animalo, Blender, Calamity, Dan Dee, Didi, Goat, Hol-
den, KBS, Mendrake, Truss and Vague

                               * MOTIV 8 *
------------------------------------------------------------
The movitated have returned to the cricle of active
groups after many months of silence. The world is
still waiting for Motiv 8's first real trip into the demo
business after 'Cleanup 96' disappointed many people
expecting a bit more from the Danish based group.

MISERY, who left the movitated ones a while ago, re-
turned to the scene in order to serve once again as
graphic artist. After the countless catastrophes with
his former groups, just to take Endless Piracy as the
latest example, MENDRAKE finally joined in as double
member combined with his membership in Laxity. His
board THE DRAGON'S TOWER is runned under both
group labels.
LARRY has re-opened his board RAVEOLUTION, ser-
ving as second European headquarter. Both boards,
Raveolution and The Dragon's Tower, are going to be
runned in a not too far distant on 14k4 baud, Swift-
Link and all other neccessary equipment offering a
quite comfortable speed level.

The demo section has lost two competent members.
ALG has left for Alpha Flight 1970 and Lepsi Deve-
lopments while MHD renamed into SKYNET and left the
scene for the Amiga what he explained PERSONALLY
to the Relax Magazine staff.

Current Motiv 8 memberstatus looks like (= 22):
BinJinx, Bird, Clive, Crossfire, Eddie, Gerry, Green-
frog, Grego, Ibanez, Iceball, Kosa, Larry, Lyon, Ma-
son, Mendrake, Merlin, Misery, Nuke, Rime, The Fresh
Prince, TMG and Visby

                            * ONSLAUGHT *
------------------------------------------------------------
The Australian based group belongs to the few
groups calling out on a regular and intense basis.
Furthermore the Internet-related activities have
been increased.

Following his comrade Sting DJ KAT, a former Para-
mount member, is going to serve as mail trader in the
future.
GALLAND is infact no one else but MIDFIT/TRSI and
DR. JONES/VISION for those who can't recall Galland
in the memberlists of these two groups. Regular Relax
readers surely remember that Midfit once pretended
that CONAN returned to the CBM 64 scene and crak-
ked PACBALL for TRSI. Meanwhile Sting confirmed on
Edge Of Midnight that he cracked that game for TRSI,
and NOT Conan.

Next to THE BADLANDS for their magazine projects
Domination and Vandalism News an official Onslaught
Internet headquarter has been found as Chromance
decided to share GANGSTA'S PARADIZE now with the
Australian based group. GP is a quite hot ftp-site,
being the current number two behind The Digital Dun-
geon from Success & The Ruling Company.

MORRISSEY has been removed from the memberlist
for continously shown inactivity, so his board "DOWN
BY LAW", wearing the nickname "Down By Call", is NO
longer an Onslaught board. NEBULA has been set on
the INACTIVE list but got announced to be back in a
not too far distant.

Current Onslaught memberstatus looks like (= 28):
Bizarre, B-Wyze, Communist, Deekay, Digahole, DJ
Kat, Donar, Doom, Galland, Gop, Grafee, Jazzcat, Ja-
son, Jolz, McByte, Meff, Morbid, Moses, Mr. Brain, Ra-
mirez, Rap, Schocker, Sting, TBH, The Unholy, TMM,

            * SUCCESS & THE RULING COMPANY *
------------------------------------------------------------
X-97 has provided the best organisation and loca-
tions of all parties in the X-series yet, the only thing
missing were the masses of visitors guaranting the
success of the previous events, a failure based on
the party flood of the previous weeks.

SUPERSTITION is the name of their new German mail
cracker. It's said he used to be a member of the sce-
ne a while ago and returned to the scene using now a
different handle. Aswell new in the team is THE AL-
MIGHTY, in fact no one else but MOLOCH using a new
handle. "I quit F4CG because of the terrible organi-
sation" was his personal comment posted on Edge Of
Midnight. Actually another person already entered
the reigns of the cooperation, still it's not ment to be
spread to the public yet.

FUNXILLA is actually taking a break for around one
and a half months while LORD CRUCIFIER has officially
left the scene.

Current SCS&TRC memberstatus looks like (= 23):
Action Jackson, Alchemist, Allitaice, Bacillus, Burglar,
CBA, Coolhand, Count Zero, Credo, El Banditos, Fun-
xilla, Gazza, Micron, Moren, Nightshade, Replay, Spec-

mer EX member leaving the scene in early 1993, re-

GASH has finally left the scene for real.

Current Excess memberstatus looks like (= 16):

Release Charts

The Official Release Charts for the Relax Magazine
------------------------------------------------------------

Performed by the MASTER OF LAW...

                                    MARC

Before the start over with general explainations for
these release charts we want to introduce our very
own point system:

Fullprice Games 6.1 - 8.0 points
Budget Eames 4.1 - 6.0 points
Low Budget 2.0 - 4.0 points
PD/Shareware 1.0 - 2.0 points
Previews 0.0 - 1.0 points

One bonus point can be gained by releasing a 100% (!)
working PAL/NTSC version. When a second group got
involved with the NTSC fix the points will be shared.

Games which were already PAL released have to be
fixed uithin 6 months after the official PAL release
otherwise no points will be given for the NTSC fix.

Minus points will be given for...
-----------------------
Re-releases -7.0 points
Re-release of a preview -1.0 points
No levelpacking -0.5/ - 1.0 points
No trainer(s) -0.5/ - 1.0 points
No translation -1.0/ -2.0 points

Unlike most other magazines we won't give points for
tools. Those releases will get mentioned but that's all
about them.

SEUCK GAMES, BASIC GAMES, COMPILED BASIC
GAMES and such games that were done using a GAME
MAKER aswell as NON-PLAYABLE PREVIEWS will be
IGNORED.

Whenever we think somebody did something special
or something outstanding we will add one point to the
normal amount of points.
It is also possible to get one extra point for some-
thing that normally doesn't deserve any points.

The following boards have been taken in to conside-
ration uhilst creating these charts...

Edge of Midnight XXX-XXX-XXXX
------------- ------------
The Dungeon XXX-XXX-XXXX
---------- ------------
Dead Zone XXX-XXX-XXXX
-------- ------------
The Bass Planet XXX-XXX-XXXX
-------------- -------------

And here we go...

              * ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 (55.1 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
Germany's leading cracking group started its wares
rush with the fixed versions of BRAVE (4.7 pts), RE-
MEMBER (3.0 pts) , REVERSI (3.7 pts), UPSIDE DOWN
(4.5 pts) and DEADLY MESSENGER (3.1 pts), followed
by STARMERCHANT (3.5 pts), an extra point was gi-
ven for the translation into English, FUGITIVE (5.0
pts), a budget game from Eagleware, Together with
Hitmen MERCHANT (3.5 pts) got released, once again
an extra point for the translation was given. SAMBER
(7.0 pts) is a FULLPRICE game from Eagleware,
MYSTERY (4.6 pts) and VISION (4.1 pts) have been
further releases, completed by TARGET (3.8 pts), al-
ready working on PAL/NTSC, and the PAL version of
CANNONCRAZE (3.8 pts) from EBP and New Entry.
Last but not least the previews of SCORTIA (0.2 pts)
and SAVAGE PLATFORM (0.6 pts) have been relea-
sed.

                    * CHROMANCE (26.4 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The Hungarians started with the fixed versions of
INTERLACED PAIRS (5.0 pts) from XL.C.US Software,
and TWIN TERRORS (3.3 pts) from Bad Bytes. Later
on UNDOROID (3.3 pts), MR. SETAM (3.0 pts), LAST G
(3.0 pts) and GALLEON (8.0 pts), an Hungarian full-
pricers from 512 KByte followed. Furthermore they
have released two (compiled) Basic text adventures
called MAGIC LAND (0.0 pts) and BUDDHA (0.0 pts).
Last but not least there have been the non-playable
previews of PICMAN (0.0 pts), LEGENDS OF KYRIL
(0.0 pts) and HORSEKILLER (0.0 pts) aswell as some
normal previews like CHRONIC THE BADGER V2 (0.6
pts) and UNDORIOD (0.2 pts).

                       * DISORDER (2.0 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The new group started with EXTEND (2.0 pts) and the
previews of DUMP (0.0 pts) and PAC IT (0.0 pts).

                 * ENDLESS PIRACY (0.0 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
Their existance started and ended with a RE-RELEA-
SE of a preview called BABYLON (- 1.0 pts), a pre-
view being released twice so far, once by TRSI as
NO NAME PREVIEW (V 1) and once by Onslaught as
PARALLAX PREVIEW (V 2).

                        * EXCESS (1.0 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
Three little previews made it to the boards, namely
MYSTIC MIRRORS (0.4 pts), 48 HOURS (0.6 pts) and
finally DEEP VOID (0.0 pts), a (compiled) Basic game.

                          * F4CG (0.0 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The fantastics started their WAREZ RUSH with the
RE-RELEASE of WLADCA (- 7.0 pts), a game being
released by Talent entitled as "THE KING" about two
years ago. Next in the row the fixed version of PO-
WERTRIS (3.6 pts) and a little preview called SKY-
LIGHT (0.3 pts). Finally TRIC TRAC (2.6 pts) got re-
leased. Unfortunately only PAL points could have
been given here as the game was already running on
PAL/NTSC and the so-called fix installed by Skinheadl
turned out to be some TRASH bytes only.

                         * HITMEN (4.7 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The German based group started with the previews
of JAMES FLY (V2) (0.7 pts) and TANKS (0.5 pts). In
cooperation with Alpha Flight 1970 the fixed version
of MERCHANT (3.5 pts) got released. Finally with
DEEP VOID (0.0 pts) a compiled Basic game has
found its way to the boards.

                         * LAXITY (0.0 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
They released only the preview of OUTSIDE (0.0 pts),
a non-playable preview.

                        * MOTIV 8 (7.2 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The Danes released JAILBREAK (3.0 pts), GURDIAN
(2.0 pts), the preview of RIPP OFF (0.1 pts) and last
but not least the fixed version of X-TRIS (2.1 pts),
one MINUS point was given because a second version
was necessary.

                     * ONSLAUGHT (3.5 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The Australian based crew started with the RE-RE-
LEASE of SPACE TRACKER (- 1.0 pts), a preview up-
loaded earlier by Alpha Flight 1970. Later on the fi-
xed version of DOMINOES (3.1 pts) hit the boards, fol-
lowed by three previews called CRAZY BUSINESS
(0.5 pts), SHOVE (0.1 pts) and finally FIND THE PAIRS
0.8 pts).

                 * SUCCESS & TRC (10.4 pts) *
------------------------------------------------------------
The Dutch cooperation started with the fixed ver-
sions of XIOM (3.6 pts), SCORTIA (3.3 pts), and MON-
STER (3.0 pts), followed by two previews called
BLOOD HAND (0.3 pts) and GRAV (0.2 pts) closing
their warez drawer this period.

Merged in to a table it looks like this:

Yearly Releases

         * THE OFFICIAL 1997 RELEASE CHARTS *
------------------------------------------------------------
Feel welcomed to the chapter taking care about the
releases made in 1996, being filled with statistics
about the first release competition in 1997.

The following lines will contain ALL releases made in
1997 from ALL groups taking part in the first relea-
se competition. Still it is needless to say that this is
the only source covering the release charts on a
REGULAR level and basis, once again we are proud to
provide the BEST coverage possible in the CBM 64
scene.

Infact the idea behind this chapter is not that new
but it's definately very informative and helpful for all
persons who are interested in detailed information
about the releases in 1997 as it will contain game tit-
les, fixing or cooperating groups, the points and the
status (PAL: PAL only, PAL/NTSC: game was already
PAL/NTSC compatible and FIX: NTSC (PAL) fix in-
stalled).
This overview might be a useful documentation in or-
der to avoid re-releases, only to give a short exam-
ple. Furthermore it is the place to define your cur-
rent position, and ofcourse the position of the con-
curence who are all heading for the crown at the end

Charts Compilation

                     * CHARTS COMPILATION *
------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to your probably most FAVOURITE chapter,
the CHARTS, now presented in a NEW format.

RELAX was the only (board) magazine around offer-
ing seperate charts chapters for both parts of the
scene. We will continue this tradition to present both
charts, this time and in the future united in one chap-
ter only.

The RULES to participate remain the same. Board re-
lated persons have the chance to vote in our VOTING
BOOTH at THE ESCAPADE, by using our ONLINE VO-
TER at RELAX ONLINE or by filling our very own DIGI-
TAL votesheet. If that's not possible for any reason
you can send in a plain E-MAIL to transmit your vo-
tes, too.
The MAIL charts are a new version of the formerly
known mega charts. Here we take our PAPER and DI-
GITAL VOTESHEETS into consideration and compile
the RELAX CHARTS getting accumulated with the
charts of any magazines being released between two
of our editions. This system offers FAIR charts being
controlable by everyone who is interested in.

So much about the VOTING SYSTEMS. Here we go.

tions, that's the current status on top.
With GRAFFITY and RESOURCE fresh forces from
Hungary entered, replacing the old forces TRIAD and

No news on top, expect for CHROMANCE entering the
top three this time, still SCS & TRC and AFL seem to
be without any serious concurence.
At the end the oldtimer TRIAD re-entered by sending
with FAIRLIGHT another oldtimer out of the charts.

more. The big climber this issue is EL BANDITOS
who moved from the eighth spot to the third. At the
same time SPERMBIRD is tumbling from number two to
five.
But as we said before this is the most fastest moving
chart of them all. STARLIGHT and SEBALOZ moved up
into the top ten replacing NEOTEC and CALEDONIAN
There will be some big changes until next issue. But

VANDALISM NEWS still has the top spot in the charts.
The three following spots are the same as last time,
PROPAGANDA tumbled two places but will soon raise
again as they just released a new issue.
The big climber this month is the US magazine DRIVEN
which has taken the scene by storm putting the NTSC
scene on the scene map again. CONTRAST jumps to
the eight spot replacing the now long dead THE PUL-
SE MAGAZINE. SKYHIGH also lost some places and will
surely drop out of contention for the next issue.

Not Worthy

                            * NOT WORTHY *
------------------------------------------------------------
Magazines are supposed to be an source of informa-
tion, unfortunately a lot of our competitors abuse it
to MANIPULATE the masses for personal or group in-
terests.

Normally we avoid to participate in those humble ga-
mes as we feel contents like this to be NOT WORTHY
to be published in serious scene magazines, never-
theless Relax Magazine has been lately in the cross-
fire of critism, the question is if critism is the cor-
rect definition here. Due to the fact that some people
lacking of information in these different incidents
might believe in those manipulations printed before in
other hosts we feel free to provide the scene with
the correct facts, information which is IMPORTANT in
case people are interested in making their own mind.

It is needless to say that we use a more decent and
elegant style, we do not think we need to go so low o-
ther so-called scene journalists went before. Facts
should be more essential than some thousands of em-
pty words.

             ----------------------------------------
             | ... 20 Relax Magazine editions ... |
             ----------------------------------------
Gold? Silver? Bronze? To look out for the correct
definition of this jubilee edition should NOT be the
quest of OUR editorial staff, we don't need to cele-
brate ourselves, we prefer, unlike others, to deliver
solid information about the scene, facts which seem
to be important in order to keep up to date.

When the project "Relax Magazine" has been born in
1989 and the first edition hit the scene in September
1989 no one, not even the editors, could imagine that
this publication would be still released in 1997, almost
SEVEN and a HALF years after the initial release.
There are so many interesting tales to tell of so many
things happening all over the years, like all those
amusing conflicts of magazines, such as "RELAX" vs.
"SEX 'N CRIME", one of the countless wars "Sex 'n
Crime" had back in time. Nevertheless the facts re-
main, Relax Magazine is the only (TOP) magazine still
being active that has already been a top act in 1989
and 1990, being documented by the chart entries
and the credits our team received by cooperating
with various magazines and their staff members such
as "Scene Press" or "The Times" just to name a few
of them all.
In November 1994 the Relax Magazine has made its
COMEBACK in the form you use to know today, but as
it was NEVER declared to be dead so incompetent of-
fenses of the JEALOUS concurence defining us as a
"REBUILD OF A MAGAZINE" are surely wrong and NOT
based on proven facts, but that is NO surprise for
the generation with an eye for the finer details in the
CBM 64 scene. Relax is known as the only RELIABLE
source available these days, a source using an AP-
PRECIATED and APPROVED conception all over the
years, being a steady publication you can care about
whenever you get a copy into your hands.

Fitting into the drawer of board magazines still lots
of persons in the scene DON'T know the correct de-
finition of the term "board magazine".
The name might tell it all already, a BOARD magazine is
made for the purposes of the board society and
gets usually spread on the boards worldwide. With a
standart of 1200/2400 Baud modems in the CBM 64
scene the quest is to present the entire production
on as LESS diskspace as possible to guarantee FAST
up- and downloading, a quest being BRILLIANTLY
mastered by the board magazines all over the years.
Surely these limitations avoid masses of more or less
useful chapters which cover sex stories or other
fantasy tales COPIED from various book sources and
being sold as information and truth for all to the
readers. But what is truth? TRUTH is NOT an opinion
chapter prepared by a short-seighted editor living
in his own, small world, trying to hide behind journa-
listic principles. The philosophy of the "yellow press"
is surely NOT what advanced editors and authors
would dare to define as SERIOUS journalism. Due to
the fact that there does NOT exist an "absolute"
truth it is NOTHING else but a DERISION when certain
productions are ABUSING this term for promotion
purposes.
Unlike printed elsewhere we do NOT ignore the MAIL
SCENE at all and regulary report about the hap-
penings of the demo and mail scene, too. Our intention
is to present an ACTUAL and INFORMATIVE magazine,
a fact causing the need of FRESH and COMPLETE ma-
terial for the reports. All over the years we tried to
cover as much demo groups as possible, unfortuna-
tely the latest demo scene news CAN'T be ordered at
the addresses of several SPOKESMEN in order to
confirm or supply the latest information yet. The ma-
gazine complaining about our policy to present the
LATEST news only has been using nine months old in-
formation by presenting certain different member-
statuses of that age what surely CAN'T be in the in-
terest of the MEDIA and the READERS since nothing
is more OUTDATED than the information supplied
yesterday, isn't it? Regardless from that fact the si-
tuation in the CRACKING SCENE is quite DIFFERENT.
Here we find groups offering their latest news by
e-mail, press releases or as an executive file aswell
as on regulary updated news sections of their home-
pages. This kind of cooperation is a good way to keep
people talking about the group and to prove it is still
alive and well working, we would like to take the op-
portunity and send our respect in alphabetical order
especially to groups like ALPHA FLIGHT 1970, CHRO-
MANCE, F4CG and MOTIV 8 for their steady support.
Please keep up that good job.

The CBM 64 SCENE is and has always been a play-
ground for computer interested people, covering va-
rious nations, religions, interests and tastes, it is
just like in the real world, a world which would be
BORING when interests, tastes and everything else is
supposed to be similar. It's the variety that makes it
all INTERESTING, it is the variety that gives the scene
the chances to choose what kind of production they
do prefer, each person for him-/herself.
After the appearance of modems the CBM 64 scene
has been DIVIDED into the MAIL and MODEM SCENE,
with the Internet getting more and more important
day by day there is a third factor to care about, so
there are lots of so-called target groups for all
those various magazines, magazines which have been
added to the drawers board and mail magazines. All
those specific magazines cover a part of scene, some
try to cover as much as possible, others a bit of all.
The board magazines, covering mainly the board and
Internet purposes, have become more and more inte-
resting for the mail scene, so the activitity has been
expanded to that sector, too. Here we find the MAIL
magazines getting more and more ANXIOUS, being
aware of the fact that the board magazines are
getting more and more interesting for "their" target
group, too. In their anxiety neurosis those mail maga-
zines started over with brainless attacks against the
board magazines over and over again, VICTIMS have
been POPULAR and HIGHLY APPRECIATED publica-
tions such as "The Pulse Magazine", "Vandalism
News", "Domination" and "Propaganda" as well as the
"Relax Magazine". Concurence makes competitions
interesting, competitive publications will defend their
well deserved positions without problems and useless
attacks without any background won't change the si-
tuation at all.
CRITISM is a very sensitive topic, a topic most unfor-
tunately can NOT handle. In a world where people
worldwide proclaim the FREEDOM OF SPEECH every-
one is invited to share his opinion with the public
using different ways, the Internet is one of them. It
can be presented using a smart format, atleast ad-
vanced magazine editors are capable to do it. But on
the other hand some think it is more easy to OFFEND
someone, not presenting any remarkable arguemen-
tation as long as it LOUD enough that people get to
hear it. "Argueing" like this might look impressive for
people NOT knowing the situation at all, for people
with background information it is just POOR, and we
truely feel sorry for people which have to use that
way, doing everything just to get some attention, but
it's just like in real life, barking dogs can't bite you!
Discrediting the critic is one of the standart methods
used, transmitting the IMPRESSION that everything
edited by the critic should be WRONG or of MINOR
quality, nevertheless the proves are giving the ne-
cessary CREDIBILITY. To achieve FACTS and BACK-
GROUND, getting active in order to collect news and
information is the bottom pillar of journalism, defina-
tely NOT opinion columns being ABUSED for own inte-
rests!

Finally there is our homepage project getting critizi-
sed in a very INCOMPETENT way, too, curiously once
again this critism just came out of the same corner
just coming up with POOR accuses instead of critism
based on facts. We can only INVITE all scene related
persons to VISIT the Relax Magazine homepage in or-
der to check it carefully, word by word, line by line to
read the COMPLETE document(s) being offered in-
stead of TAKING OUT short sequences of the context
to transfer a complete different situation and mea-
ning. Real eyes realise real lies.
Our so-called magazine reviews chapter on RELAX
ONLINE does NOT present REAL reviews but more an
OVERVIEW about the magazines released, offering a
TABLE OF CONTENT and a short view on the outfit to
inform the visitor about what is going on. The short
table of contents give a fast impression about what
to expect in the magazine, we are offering links to
THE DIGITAL DUNGEON for a download option directly
to the magazine's directory so that people can make
a picture ON THEIR OWN as it is NOT our job to create
and suggest opinions for our readers, presenting
them as the definate "truth" unlike others want to do
these days.
As an EVERY scene publications takes the opportu-
nity to HIGHLIGHT themselves whenever and where-
ever it is possible, why shouldn't the Relax Magazine
be allowed to do some advertisement? But that is
once again a JEALOUS arguement from the concu-
rence, is there a need for further comments?

Our colleagues (?) from the Domination staff retur-
ned with a generally nice new edition of their maga-
zine, but the promising introduction
"You should never take too literally what you read,
misinformation, distortion, make belief, fabrications,
half truths implied, misquotations, out of context and
and lies.. Fact and fantasy united as one ..."
turned out to be some well choosen words to fill up
the intro, unfortunately it have NOT been the guiding
lines for the main editor to create his publication.
As we have been reporting in issue 18 about JAZZ-
CAT's LAME attitude to perform self-voting over and
over again, Relax is not the first and only magazine
to realise this fact, he voted for his own group and
its members since he was a Legend member, but that
is definately NOT new for people observing the scene
press since ages.
The Relax Magazine is a magazine working with a
deadline, while copying Jazzcat's votes from the
hardcopy TWO small but detectable mistakes have
been made in the time pressure, that is surely a FACT
we have to admit. We generally try to AVOID mistakes,
but we are humans only, too, so what happens even in
commercial publications can be found in our UNDER-
GROUND publication, too, a fact everyone has to ac-
cept. We have put the names of Deekay and Jolz into
the wrong rows, unfortunately we have remarked it
AFTER the release so we COULD NOT change it in the
binary version anymore, so in the release version
our readers could find Jolz in the row for graphic
artists and Deekay in the row for crackers. This has
been corrected in the ONLINE edition on the RELAX
HOMEPAGE around three months ago. Until now NO-
BODY has approached us with being trapped by one
of the countless "jokes" from Jazzcat's side, it's
more like the scene has finally discovered his GENU-
INE characer being a person to use an every UNFAIR
method to achieve personal and group fame.
Actually he has been acting quite CLEVER using OUR
MISTAKE to deactivate the situation and to get out of
it with just one blue eye, infact a VERY INTELLIGENT
solution so we must have our doubts that it comes
from Jazzcat directly.
The "joke" version meanwhile has been spread on our
headquarter EDGE OF MIDNIGHT over and over again
but LIES never turned out to become true when they
got repeated several times. People who still might
have doubts may ask the editor of the demo scene
orientated magazine CONTRAST for further informa-
tion, as two of Jazzcat's "jokes" have been found in
the two previous editions of that magazine, too.
      MISINFORMATION? DISTORTION? MAKE BELIEF?
Sure, but NOT in the RELAX MAGAZINE! We can only
offer all interested persons to ORDER the photocopy
of Jazzcat's paper votesheet and the hardcopy of
the "digital votesheet". Please send a letter, including
DM 3,-- for package, postage and copyshop costs
(overseas DM 6,--), to the OFFICIAL Relax Magazine
mail address and your answer will be delivered within
a WEEK after receiving your request (overseas TWO
weeks). Unlike others we are working with FACTS. We
are currently thinking about scanning the votesheet
and on request we are willing to spread it using the
CBM 64 scene mailing lists.

Another PATHETIC story could be found concerning
the fact of Jazzcat's house burning down. Jazzcat
pointed out that beyond several wrong news the word
HOT was been used to laugh about his fate.
The "WRONG" information has been supplied by HIS
group mate VENGEANCE in an IRC session which has
been, as usual from my side, buffered in order to be
ARCHIVED if something interesting happens. "HOT de-
tails" has been used in the same way people use "HOT
NEWS", what infact means ACTUAL or BRANDNEW, as
RELAX was once again the first publication to report
about the incident. With David's interpretation we
have figured out that HOT has been AMBIGUOUS here
but it was NOT intended to be used that way. We feel
truely SORRY about that misunderstanding!
Nevertheless he has been the only person to come up
with that interpretation so this is just another proof
for using MISQUOTATIONS in order to manipulate the
masses to make them believe in his version of the
story.
"I am the god of hell fire" has been written by RRR in
SEVERAL IRC sessions, that is SURELY a fact which
CAN'T be DENIED. Nevertheless this sentence has
been brought in about a DOZEN times before the sto-
ry of the fire in David's house has been made public,
AND this sentence has been brought in later on
whenever the ANNOYING commercial of an OLDIE CD
COMMERCIAL in TV has been shown, a spot, guess
what, always starting with "I am the god of hell fire".
This spot advertises the CLASSIC ROCK compilation
from TIME LIFE and is still today shown almost once
an hour unlike in former times when it got repeated in
an every single commercial break in cable TV.
Ofcourse any sources reporting Jazzcat about it
might have taken Jazzcat's current situation into
consideration and connected the facts this way. Once
again we can find an AMBIGUOUS situation here which
can be interpreted in TWO DIFFERENT WAYS, so the
quest here is if that has been ABUSED as another
good chance to DISCREDIT the main editor of this ma-
gazine in order to REFLECT the attention away from
the SELF-VOTING SCANDAL! It just looks like this. We
did NOT expect above average reputated people go-
ing so LOW, but Jazzcat went once again back to his
roots, a LAME FOOL entertaining the ESTABLISHED
part of the scene. Indeed we feel sorry for him.
We definately are NOT in the need to go on a LOW LE-
VEL or BEHIND someone else's back. People CONTI-
NOUSLY reading this publication know we take care
and REPORT about unpopular topics, regardless if it
meets the interest or taste of the readers, published
either in the CBM 64 version or at one of the Relax
supported homepage projects.
      MISINFORMATION? DISTORTION? MAKE BELIEF?
 MISQUOTATIONS? FABRICATIONS? OUT OF CONTEXT?
The answer does NOT need to be given here once
again, it can be found in the previous lines, as we do
NOT publish PREJUDICES built up on what third per-
sons might have reported, situations which could
have been MISUNDERSTOOD by those "reporters", it
is definately not JOURNALISM in its original meaning,
it is just what SO-CALLED scene journalists abuse to
COVER their OWN VERSION of the story in order to
SUPPORT their very own interests, as in this case to
get back LOST SYMPATHIES, sympathies being lost by
a behaviour the masses surely CAN'T and WON'T TO-
LERATE these days anymore!
FACT AND FANTASY UNITED AS ONE!
Well done! Another GENUINE journalistic highlight from
Australia, inspirated by "The Sun", the reference for
YELLOW PRESS activities, funny to read but hard to
believe contents, in REAL LIFE made to SELL as much
issues as possible, in the SCENE to GAIN sympathies
and to votes. That is NOT our business.

Last but not least the partners in the Propaganda
staff have doubts about the credibility of the Relax
Magazine release charts and found some non-invol-
ded sources without background information publi-
shing it in their productions, too.
Here the situation is quite clear, a reference can be
found in a previous Relax Magazine edition. The game
ROLL OVER has been mega-trained by Ignorance of
Alpha Flight 1970, by choosing one of those trainers
it was NOT possible to finish the game anymore. As a
matter of this fact a minus point was given, remember
to keep in mind the publishment has hit no one else
but the editor's group. In F4CG's version of NODULE
exactly the same problem appeared, so once again a
minus point was given as the rules for the release
charts include ALL groups competiting here, and
that includes F4CG, too! A useful trainer should give
a helping hand to complete a game, it should not PRE-
VENT finishing the game. When people start complai-
ning here about a missing credibility it is nothing else
but a sign of INOBJECTIVITY as the responsible edi-
tor came up with a SIMILAR and FAIR judgement, DE-
DUCTING points in BOTH cases!
While talking about the credibility of release charts
we would like to refer to an incident when Marc has
been responsible for the release charts in PROPA-
GANDA. The complete charts chapter got MANIPULA-
TED after Marc has given it to the main editor by ad-
ding F4CG first releases in order to find themselves
on the top spot. This act of FAIRNESS and credibility
caused Marc leaving the Propaganda staff for good,
just meant as a short reminder for those which seem
to have forgotten what happened back in time.

This all has lead us to a fast but definitive decision.
There has been RUMOURS that issue # 20 was inten-
ded to be the FINAL issue in order to concentrate on
other projects and other computer systems, infact
that have been our plans for the future.
The last few weeks have proven there is still the
need of ADVANCED, QUALIFIED, INDEPENDENT (OB-
JECTIVE!) and what seems to be most important
point here, SERIOUS and RELIABLE journalism instead
of YELLOW PRESS infected publications being abused
as propaganda medium for personal interests, what is
definately NOT journalism, public relations is a more
fitting term here. We will continue to follow our pre-
destinated route, in case people dislike our HONESTY
and CRITICAL REPORTS we have to accept it, now and
ofcourse in all forthcoming editions, nevertheless we
WON'T change our policy. It is definately IMPOSSIBLE
to please the ENTIRE scene, this and any further edi-
tions are dedicated for people believing in the free-
dom of speech, being interested in background infor-
mation instead of press releases bringing just one
side of the story, a version which suits the interests
of an author best.

Best regards on behalf of the Relax Magazine staff,

RRR/Oxyron

Freestyle

                            * FREESTYLE *
------------------------------------------------------------
Freestyle is actually no new regular chapter of the
Relax Magazine, it is more some kind of introduction
for our future plans. The name 'freestyle' has been
choosen because it offers a freedom to insert a
bright variety of topics here, and as this introduc-
tion doesn't fit into any Relax drawer yet it has been
a well choosen name for a chapter like this one.

Due to the fact that the eastern territories are
getting more and more important for the scene the
time has come to guarantee a regular coverage. The
structures have been already built up by our Polish
correspondant, so we are looking forward very opti-
mistic into the future.
Next to fresh and actual reports about the MAJOR
(demo) groups in Poland we will surely send out our
freelancing reporters to scene parties in order to
present party reports containing everything going
on there in the format well known from the standart
presented in our party radar chapters. Once again
Relax Magazine is supposed to become a forerunner
here, the baptism of fire will be presented in a not
too far distant.

Still the happenings in the Polish scene are quite
mysterious for the western scene as there still exist
various barriers caused by communication problems,
most of the facts people got to hear have been some
mours only, as there did not exist any remarkable
structures to supply any information to the rest of
the world, many news never left the borders. It is our
aim to change the situation completely!

In order to understand the Polish scene and its men-
tality we have asked a prominent scener to add his
point of view in a short article, a person being con-
cerned into the problematic nature and capable to
comment it. Please welcome DRUID of Agony Design.

A short introduction into the Polish scene
------------------------------------------------------------
So at the beginning, after reading some issues of the
notorious Polish scene magazines (from tape) we
(Comanche, Harpoon, Viper, Shogoon and me) decided
to make an own group. It was called "Chaos".
When we arrived on our first party we noticed our
"gurus" from Elysium and Asphyxia. These people
were some sort of "gods" for us, one word from such
a man was worth a tiring way by train. It was at the
beginning...
As Tolkien wrote in "Silmarilion" - at the beginning
there was Chaos. Later on we renamed into Agony
Design, we have released a lot of stuff and entered
the top in almost all charts. 4 years have passed and
now everything has changed.
The scene in Poland is still growing. But the strange
thing is that those newcomers don't behave in the
way we did in the old days, their attitudes are totally
different. We had respect for people who did things
better than we did, who were much more experienced
in scene culture, who have visited more parties or
had more well known friends.
Back in time when we were those newcomers we have
respected the guys from Asphyxia, Elysium and Ta-
boo. But most of todays newcomers are very diffe-
rent. They behave in a totally different way. By re-
leasing something or even without releases they
start to attack people standing higher in scene hie-
rachy or scene charts. They use to attack every-
body for everything, calling them fake elite. If you
read my note from "Icarus" you probably know what
I mean.
I personally use to call those guys JEALOUS CHIL-
DREN. Why? It is funny that a person who is infact a
newcomer in the scene, who is totally unknown and
better should concentrate on his work to get admired
starts thinking about attacking people in order to
gain some fame. Surely it's more to easy to define o-
thers as "fake elite" who don't deserve the respect
they have gained all over the years, so people start
to scream "fake elite", start to lie and to publish
bullshit in (their) magazines. Here in Poland we have a
lot of those people, we have a lot of magazines who
publish these wary chapters and this is a really SAD
situation. I won't name any handles now as I will refer
to some of them later on.

Of course we have normal newcomers, too, who start
in the way we did. In the beginning it is swapping, vi-
siting scene parties and getting more creative later
on by producing demos. Today's so-called friendship
scene was supposed to be a source of friendship,
but some people mix up their scene activities beco-
ming a part of their REAL LIFE, they have got a lot of
COMPLEXES caused by this strange and unusual
point of view.
If you want to get an example, here's just one, but a
good one. Take a closer look at the guys calling
themselves Lepsi Developments (to be more precise
Sebaloz and Zielok). People should know Sebaloz be-
causing he seems to be a quite known swapper but I
suppose that only a few may know Zielok, the coder
of Lepsi and Miracles.
As many probably noticed, Lepsi has released a lot
of stuff lately. Their aim seems to be producing more
than these better groups do, this form of activity is
causing a changing memberstatus week by week. But
the strange thing is that they aren't ranked too high
in the (Polish) magazines. People may ask why? The
answer can't be given from my side. Maybe people
just don't like such mass productions (quality always
outclasses quantity) or there is missing something in
Lepsi's productions, a sort of spirit, I use to call it
"heart". As a matter of the fact Sebaloz decided to
attack Agony, and in his magazines Magia (Polish) and
Design (English) he wrote some senseless comments
about or group.

Another interesting thing is that we have met him
some weeks before, then we noticed that everything
I have said there have printed word by word in his
magazine Magia.
It's just a poor example to see people hunting for
CHEAP sensations. I started to laugh when I read a
party report in Design. Sebaloz wrote that it was a
very cool party, and, what seems to be more impor-
tant, fortunately there weren't any Agony Design
members among the visitors and they always cause a
mess. I have visited about 14 parties so far (please
ask Comanche for a confirmation or even more pre-
cise information). As far I can remember, the most
funny people on parties always were Lepsi members.
People can find them sitting infront of their machines
in a line of tables near the wall, having risen a really
BIG Polish flag behind them with a Lepsi Developments
logo on it. That is what they use to define as a party,
what is a cool for them fitting to their sense of party
fun.
We in Agony try to make something sensible and diffe-
rent and got defined as mess-makers. As Far as I am
concerned a lot of people had big fun with us on par-
ties, and yes, we once did a mess at the party in Poz-
nan (regards to all former Chromance Poland mem-
bers ;)). We do not visit parties to sit infront of com-
puters all the time as we all can do that at home, we
are there just to have some fun with our friends. But
Sebaloz is a more experienced scener and he does
know everything much better than we do. ;)

And the other thing... In one of his chapter somebody
known as Zielok tried to prove that I should be a la-
mer and he is a much better coder. My impression
was that he would start crying for mummy each mo-
ment, begging for votes. In my opinion persons be-
having like this are nothing else but tiny lamers.

In the previous lines I just have reported about more
or less known people. Here in Poland we have much
more examples of stupidity. Unfortunately the Polish
magazines are battlefields. To be honest, in our ma-
gazine Astoria we have to defend ourselves in a more
or less elegant way, too, sometimes we can't accept
what others did publish, so there was no other way
out.
Another fitting example of Polish stupidity have been
some words about a quite popular person, Jack
Alien. In the latest Prawda issue Shaggy and Grabba,
both members of Fatum, called Jack Alien a thief, la-
mer, asshole, etc. Of course they did it in Polish, so
infact only Polish sceners got informed about the
problem and probably a lot of newcomers think now
that it was really COOL and BRAVE to attack and
blame this "elite" cracker, and they don't care about
him anymore. This, my dear reader, is our Polish men-
tality.
You probably won't understand it because it is a
part of us, a part of the Polish nation. Everyone of
us has a part of it inside. Intelligent people can hide
it and behave like "normal" people, but there are qui-
te much "other" people.
Is it hard to say who is normal or who behaves
strange? A while ago a Polish scener declared in his
magazine the composer DRAX to be a moron. But did
he know Drax? Of course NOT... Sometimes it is really
hard to read and understand Polish magazines!
This is one of the reasons for Agony's inactivity, it
slowly makes no sense to be active for those people.
I remember an additional fact when I read in some Po-
lish magazines that "Druid's only work for the scene
is making cash by producing games". They continued
that I do everything for cash just to upgrade my PC.
In addition one of those sceners advised me starting
to do something for the scene and not only for com-
mercial interests. That was some kind of shock for me
after having coded and released a lot of trackmos,
dentros, intros, collections, tools, etc. and this guy
dared to tell me I should do something for the scene.
As you all can see here, if you are a game coder you
are BAD because you are coding for money only, if
you are a demo coder you are BAD because you are
too high in the charts so people start calling you
fake elite and so on. It seems to be nothing else but a
kindergarden, sad but true.

Fortunately I have my private life, I use to work in a
good company and earn good money. I have a lot of
friends (scene and non-scene) and what's more im-
portant, I have my great girl-friend (hi Danko, I love
you) so I really don't care anymore about the scene
problems of some childish guys. Poland is generally a
nice country, but we have a lot of worse problems
here but those might be topics for other chapters.

I wish you all a good time and a lot of pure fun (e.g.
like me while listening to techno).

Druid/Agony Design

The previous lines might have been quite helpful to
understand what is going on in Poland these days, we
are currently trying to perform journalistic aid to
developing a serious scene press by reacting on the
problems and needs of the ENTIRE scene.

Best regards,

Interview

                             * INTERVIEW *
------------------------------------------------------------
As most readers were missing the interview chapter
in our previous edition here it is once again after
finally having found another target for our inquisa-
tion.

The interview we intended to release already in the
January edition still did NOT arrive yet and we doubt
it will ever find the way into our mail folder, never-
theless we think to have found more than only a sub-
stitution with a founding member of one of the count-
less FAMOUS German demo groups, so please welcome
ANONYM of PADUA right here and now.

?: Hello Frank. Many thanks for being month's guest
in our interview section we use to define as TALK-
SHOW, too. In the beginning of an every interview we
use to ask the question about some PERSONAL facts
which are NOT computer related in order to have an
introduction for the readers so we will continue this
tradition here.

!: Thank you very much for having me as a guest.

My real name is Frank Michlick. The next important
thing to mention is that I am going to get married in
May.  ;-) I am really looking forward to that. It is sort
of hard for me to write about non-computer related
things, especially since my work is also computers
(journalism and the multimedia/Internet thing, you
know). I also like to hang around with my friends and
of course with my fiancee.

I am 24 years old (born on March 31st) and at the
moment I live in Berlin, Germany, but I might be consi-
dering to move job-wise sometime.

?: After the personal introduction naturally the com-
puter related facts should NOT be missed here. Plea-
se tell us something about your computer career, how
it all started, how did you get your handle aswell as
the groups you have been a member of.

!: My career just started shortly before the begin-
ning of the Padua history, but I will try to tell you
what happened, as much as I can still recall (I am still
suffering quite a but from that Eimer-desease, erhm,
I mean Alzheimer-desease).

In the very beginning it was a friend of mine (well ac-
tually two friends) who had a C64. Quite something
new and big at that time (1988, I think). So I was really
interested and I discovered soon that I was interes-
ted in programms and started programming Basic. a
my friend's house. When I found out that you could
really do some cool things (like the cracker intros in
front of the games we had) with machine language I
started to look at object code by others and to my
surprise I slowly started to understand it. At christ-
mas I finally got my own C64, so I could really start.
Soon I became a proud member of the Nuclear Power
Station, which was actually a group of people who
could only use demo and intro makers. So me and a
friend started putting routines together and learnt
how to make our own intros. Later I meet Roman and
we formed The Magic Forces and started really to
code on our own. Soon we were asked to join Caltex
(a subgroup of Beasty Boys), but one week later,
X-Rated was founded, and we formed a subgroup cal-
led Eject (which later became Padua).

?: Padua has made a name for themselves in the demo
scene some years ago in a time when most present
sceners were not around yet. Please introduce the
history of the group to our readers.

!: Padua was formed in 1989/1990 by Lubber, Roman,
Sanflex, Cruise and me. We started off without demo
DELUGE, which was originally supposeed to be a coop
demo with our old mates from X-Rated. It was relea-
sed at the Horizon party at Easter '90. Later on
that year we started our TORTUREs series, that ac-
tually was our MAIN PRODUCTION. We also released a
tool disk and several small demos and tools. Later on
the magazine UPDATE became a member of the Padua
family, but was stopped shortly afterwards. I guess
this is about, isn't it?

We are still active whenever we feel like it and have
time to produce something. We are mainly doing this
for fun, tradition and to keep the spirit alive. Also we
never really seem to run out of ideas or things we
would like to do. We are also trying to bring some of
the older members back to some action - KEEP YOUR
FINGERS CROSSED.

?: Padua invented the slogan that style in initiate.
What did you want to express with it and what do you
think about the actual style of the popular trackmos
and other demo productions?

!: The slogan was invented by us, but DESIGN always
was very important to us, especially to Roman, who
also was one of the founders of Padua. When he QUIT
I felt that we sort of partially lost that kind of STYLE
because it was up to me to "TEACH" what the Padua
spirit was about to the new members.

This is waht is important to me: design and originality.
The difficulty of the coding is NOT that important to
me, it's more IMPORTANT that everything is SMOOTH
and NICE looking.

The parties really have CHANGED the way todays de-
mos are. The parts have to change QUICK and that
can only be made with a TRACKMO. Unfortuantely this
somehow makes us loose the original style that demos
were made in, but I do not really mind it that much.

Even though this is something, we did not do so far,
I think that every trackmo should have some kind of
part selector and also a function to halt the part you
are watching (like in Krestology), because some peo-
ple only like to watch a certain part for a longer time
(I am one of those persons).

?: With the release of the Starburst preview Padua
has sent a lifesing releasewise. Next to the complete
demo to be released in a few weeks will there any o-
ther productions follow?

!: Certainly Starburst will not be our last production.
We still have too MANY IDEAS left to avoiding us to
stop. Also we certainly would not like to disappear
without any big bang (a last demo), but why would we
want to disappear anyways ;-). There's a lot more to
come...

?: Wildstyle has been Padua's game label back in time.
What titles have been produced and what about the
difficulties with the companies (e.g. WINZER)? Let us
travel back.

!: We did NOT really release anything else but Winzer
and two PD-magazines. The COMPANY that started to
form at that time is still alive though and going (not on
the C64 though). It's now called SILVER STYLE EN-
TERTAINMENT and doesn't have much to do with Pa-
dua anymore.

The Winzer game actually made us LOOSE money in-
stead of earning some and also SPLIT UP the group
(Lubber was kicked at that time). This was caused by
quite a few internal problems and also problems with
STARBYTE. This was because the game was finished
too late and I had to pay a fine.

?: These days the COMMERCIAL market is almost DEAD
but some ENTHUSIASTIC freaks are still developing
games. Will Padua get ACTIVE in the GAME SECTOR
again, too?

!: I am sorry to say this, but as far as I am concerned
NO FUTURE ACTION in the sector will be taken, due to
lack of publishing companies and lack of opportunities
to earn ENOUGH MONEY.

?: Parties are always offering lots of interesting ta-
les to be told, one of them is surely the Radwar party
in 1994 when even EXPERIENCED crackers were NOT
able to crack the Padua car. Can you comment it a bit
further, having a look back on it the story remains
as a FUNNY highlight, and have there been any SIMI-
LAR stories from other conventions?

!: That was quite a thing, so here's what happened:

During the Radwar party, we (Leonardo, Franky and
me), went to our (Franky's) car to get something from
the trunk. Franky opened the trunk and when he was
about to close it, I realised that he'd LEFT the keys IN
there, so I sort of SCREAMED "DON'T CLOSE THE
TRUNK!". Nevertheless he did that. So we asked the
people at the party for HELP to BREAK INTO our car
because we wanted to go back to Berlin. But NOBODY
(NOT even the COPS from a passing police car) were
able to help us - so we finally decided to SMASH the
back window. Unfortunately I do not really remember
who did that, but I know it was none of the Paduadies.
Could it have been JIHAD? Anybody remembers?

As that party was held in January, I would also like to
mention that the way back was really FREEZING, es-
pecially for me who had to sit in the back of the car
on some of the broken pieces of the glass that were
still left there. We had covered the window with some
plastic, but that came off on our way. I was sitting
there in my sleeping back and I was still freezing.

?: Well, I know that I did not break it for sure. When we
have a look closer at the ACTIVITY of DEMO GROUPS
most of them do release their demos on BIG PARTIES
only, where they can present their work on a BIG
screen to a bright audience consisting of users pre-
fering a wide range of computer systems, and where
they can EARN money with their demo. In former times
we have released demos when we liked to do it. Do
you think the scene is heading into a WRONG direction
now?

!: Only releasing demos at big events is NOT really the
RIGHT WAY, even though it seems that it is the way
that Padua is going nowadays, too. Our motivation ne-
ver really was the money though, but the big audience
and our ideas. We never really like to design our de-
mos especially for the big screen like quite a few
groups do it today. We always try to make our demo
look nice on a SMALL MONITOR aswell, because this is
the place where MOST REAL C64 freaks will watch it.
The MONEY you can win at parties is a NICE plus, but
it's NOT really necessary, because we are NOT doing
it for business but for fun.

We try to DESIGN our demos for the TRUE C64 USER
and not for any PC user that might happen to vote at
the party aswell. Most of those people at NOWADAYS
parties are NOT really ABLE to know what is ORIGI-
NAL and what is NOT. Just take a look at those UGLY
PC demos.

?: While talking about parties, Padua has been re-
sponsible for the CBM 64 organisation of a party in
Berlin last year. What was your general impression
and are further happenings planned?

!: Altogether the party WASN'T that bad, but we were
really LACKING C64 freaks. The invitation was relea-
sed TOO late and the location does not seem to be the
best either, because Berlin is NOT really that easy to
reach for most sceners. This is why we do NOT really
have any further plans about any parties in Berlin
right now. We were talking about organising a party
during the Internationale Funkausstellung (a Berlin
media fair), but the people from the fair company
seem to be lacking money. There have also been some
small discussions with WEASEL and DARKLORD about
a possible scene meeting WITHOUT computers, but we
did NOT get far with the plans. We will certainly keep
you updated.

?: In a period when it was not so popular scenewise
Padua already has been active on the Internet and
maintained their own homepage and ftp-site. What do
you think of all those countless CBM 64 related
homepages and ftp-sites around these days?

!: It sort of keeps the spirit alive in a new way. Even
though quite a few of those people with their home-
pages are NOT really ACTIVE anymore they present
HISTORY. I also like to see how many old sceners find
other old pals again via the Internet - lately I recei-
ved quite a few mails from old friends (e.g. Morpheus/
FHI).

Some of those pages (it's the same thing with COM-
MERCIAL WWW-sites) are NEVER in a state worth visi-
ting. They should give some MORE INFORMATION than
just links. I kinda LIKE to look at sites like "IN MEDIAS
RES" and be reminded of OLD TIMES, or read old sto-
ries about other groups.

At one time, we will also have our story and all our
releases on our site, just wait and see ;-) I am work-
ing on it from time to time.

The ftp-sites are useful as long as you have all the
necessary transfer tools, but not all of them are
really that updated (including our site).

?: Will you expand your activity to get the Padua ftp-
site more uptodate just like the leading ftp-sites be-
ing around these days, as compared with them it
looks a bit outdated?

!: It certainly is totally outdated due to time problems.
We also seem to encounter administrative problems
quite often (e.g. full disk-system) due to the high
user frequency of the server and the lacking money
at that university where it is running.

I would appreciate to find somebody who could HELP
me to take better care of our ftp-area again, maybe
anybody who is reading might be interested?

?: As everything has to come to an end we unfortu-
nately have to stop here, too. Here we offer our in-
terview partners to add some comments and greet-
ings, feel free to add whatever you would like to add
here. Many thanks for being our guest.

!: Thank you for interviewing me - it was my pleasure.

Well greetings... Everyone I know really, especially to
all Paduadies. Also to Lubber, because I think I should
have sort of forgiven him by now... I would also like to
greet my future wife ;-)

Don't forget to drop by our website:
                             http://www.padua.org

Make sure to get STARBURST, whenever it finally will
be released.

And keep the spirit alive.

So much about the talkshow. Next time we will be back
again with a from our side better prepared interview
due to the fact that we had to re-organise this just a
few days infront of the release date.

Best regards,

RRR/Oxyron

Demo Reviews

                          * DEMO REVIEWS *
------------------------------------------------------------
The KICKOFF of the demo season in 1997 was made in
Poland at the NORTH PARTY, presenting with SAMAR's
production called OPIUM, FRACTION's LOGIC CONTROL
and OXYGEN's PRIDE generally NICE but NO revolu-
tionary or extremely stunning contents. The intro
competition has been rather interesting, too, and it's
surely worth to be mentioned that the guys in ELY-
SIUM were the worthy winners here and giving us
hope for further productions from this once so com-
petitive Polish demo group.
KERNEL did not compile enough contributions to be
accepted as day of the season, THE GATHERING can-
celled all CBM 64 related competitions so it could NOT
contribute here, too. Nevertheless SHAPE and IM-
PULSE released a cooperation demo called "SHAM-
PULSE" while HACK 'N TRADE's debut demo on CBM 64
entitled "SLACKER'S DELIGHT" was NOT too promi-
sing.
Day two has been shared in two different locations,
the SILICONVENTION and SYMPOSIUM, both located in
Germany with a distance of around 80 km. Both demo
competitions haven't been as good as expected and
found twice two entries from the (co-)organising
crews in the top three lists, at the Siliconvention it
was PLUSH with "X-DREAM" and at the Symposium
SMASH DESIGNS with "PROJECT PITCHFORK", no
really stunning productions at all. Other competiting
groups were Metalvotze, Tengu and Ultimate, not even
experts will recognize them as promising demo facto-
ries. That was NO happy demo easter!
Just one week later day three took place, again in
two different locations, X-97 and SCENEST were the
names of the gatherings in Holland and Hungary. In
Eindhoven NO NAME's "HOLY REFUGE" and XENON's
"FIERCE CREATIONS" have been the only remarkable
productions, nevertheless nothing really outstanding
setting up new standarts has been seen here. In Bu-
dapest the productions from known groups were
RESOURCE's "OUT OF DAZE", THERAPY'S "CASTLE
O F DREAMIN'" and COMA's "ONLY HATE", not provi-
ding any revolutionary productions, too.

In 1997 the legendary MASTERS DESIGN GROUP, a
name made well known by OLIVER STILLER some years
ago with the production of AMICA PAINT next to other
IMPRESSING demo and game productions, brought the
scene an oldschool inspirated MEGADEMO, the opi-
nions about it varied a lot. COSINE, perhaps the ONLY
known English DEMO GROUP left these days, released
another oldschool oriented production called SET
PIECE, surely a NICE production and with some other
lately released productions in mind there is definate-
ly a trend to back to the roots of the demo scene, a
WELCOMED alternation to the actual fashion where
demos are getting more and more identical. After
quite a while of silence Finland provided two produc-
tions, BEYOND FORCE have hold a meeting and relea-
sed MEETING 97 a small onefiler while EXTEND compe-
ted at the JUHLA IVb party with a fine dentro called
KUPPA, containing some great art by Electric.
Cracking groups have explored the demo market as a
field to express their presence and creativity, at The
Party 1996 HITMEN, ONSLAUGHTand XENON surprised
with contributions of different qualities. After "CU-
CUMBER JUICE" people have put a lot of expectations
into the sequal, unfortunately it got EXPANDED a bit
too much, infact 25 minutes are a bit too long for a
demo/trackmo these days. ONSLAUGHT's contribution
made many attenders believe into a FAKE from one of
the countless enemies the Australian crew made over
the years, unfortunately it was NO fake production
but a serious contribution. XENON perhaps came
along with the MOST PROMISING production from a
cracking group in 1996 approaching surely a good
FOURTH position. ALPHA FLIGHT 1970 has been
starting to recruit a competitive demo section in the
previous months to return to a FORMER strength
shown TEN years ago, GETOESE has been the FIRST
demo released since 1991 and a quite promising pro-
duction offering lots of expectations when it comes
up to further demo releases.

So much about the demo season of 1997, following
please find the demo reviews.

                   * TRIAGE/SMASH DESIGNS *
------------------------------------------------------------
Smash Designs' media publication called DYNASTY an-
nounced this demo to be the BEST CBM 64 demon-
tration ever in history, coded by the best CBM 64
coder around these days. A DECENT and MODEST
form of advertisement surely deserves a DONATION,
so it is surely a MUST to find a review here.

                      Fuben about the coding:
                      --------------------
This DOUBLE-SIDED trackmo is mainly coded by AEG
with some additional code by DASHEELE.

The demo starts QUITE POOR: two zooming balls just
move on the X-axis (in maybe 5 frames?!)... Comparing
this to those balls in Graffity's demo, which I reviewed
some minutes ago, this is really lame (sorry!). A pic-
ture apears and later some credits written with a big
charset (like in older Smash-demos).
A 4x4 tunnel effect comes up: The Reflex-Tunnel! This
effect is EXACTLY looking like the REFLEX tunnel in
MATHEMATICA and is probably the same code as you
can't code that effect faster than Reflex did (speed-
code)! I'm not sure why AEG RECODED this tunnel
effect again as it's really the SAME again (even the
textures are looking EQUAL). OK, the demo conti-
nues with the usual intro stuff like a presents-logo
and a Koala-picture. That's about the rather POOR
intro.
A small VECTOR CHESSBOARD with 8 sprites rotating
around the Y-axis comes up. This routine is definete-
ly TOO SLOW and TOO UNPRECISE (sorry again)! Next
is a COLORPLASMA in 8 X 8 (in a size of 40 X 25
chars). The plasma has a X-TECH additionally, but
evenso it should run much faster in my opinion! The
next routine is kind of TRANSFORMING TEXTURE-
MAPPER in 4 X 4 mode! The idea is quite nice, but it is
quite EASY to code. The object is just ROTATING ho-
rizontally, so the routine is working like a X-zoomer.
I would rate the routine higher if it would run a bit
faster though! Next coming up is a VECTOR OBJECT
with a PLASMA on its surfaces (no texture-mapping).
Why is that vector that SLOW as it is NOT even tex-
ture mapped? Following there are some pictures be-
ing times to the music (copied from an old Reflex-
demo). NOTHING IMPRESSIVE.
The next effect (if it isn't a bug instead! hehe...) is
quite weird. Some lines in 4 X 4 (laced) are shaded on
the screen. This routine is really looking strange as
I can't recognize what it should actually show! Per-
haps, with lots of fantasy, (light) rays, I don't know.
Anyway, a VECTOR OBJECT comes up again. This time
the surfaces are filled with a FAKED gouraud. There
is NO light-source included (why NOT?!)... The routine
is running in 8 X 8 by the way. The next part is look-
ing quite NICE even it is done a lot of times BEFORE:
three SHADEBOBS appear in 8 X 8.... hmmm. After a
Koala-picture there is a BURNING LINE-CUBE (once
again in 8 X 8). This effect was shown in a 4KB intro
by Smash. Another plasma comes up next. This sort
of plasma was seen a lot of times and it is NOTHING
special! A BUMP-MAPPER comes up (4 X4 mode+lace).
I think I have seen better versions yet (Relightening:
running in ONE frame). A COLOUR-CYCLING EFFECT
comes up next. Once again it is quite POOR (sorry).
After turning disk a SWIRL ROTATOR somes up (al-
ready seen before!). The next effect/PICTURE (?) is
a MANDELBROT. I suppose this fractal is faked (PRE-
CALCULATED) just like in OLDER Smash demos (but
why?)! Some SHADESBOBS come up again, I think I've
enough shadebobs in all possible variants on the C64
yet! Later that TEXTURE-MAPPER comes up again,
now with a X-TECH included. As said before, the idea
is GREAT!
Another FAKE comes up: SHADED VECTORS. What a
pitty the shade is just FAKED... Sorry, but I PREFER
AXIS' versions in the Coma-Light series. The BUMPER
comes up again and later a COLOURPLASMA (some-
thing lik e that in 4 YEARS OXYRON), here in 8 X 8.
The next vector is FAKED again. The object shows a
star (something like that in Access Denied by Reflex)
but the rotation is EXTREMELY UNPRECISE (why?)!
I prefer REFLEX' FULLSCREEN vector even that was
partly PRECALCULATED, too. Finally the end part
with some text is coming up.

All in all this demo was GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT in my
eyes. ALL effects were in a LOW QUALITY and the
demo LACKS of NEW IDEAS.
I'm sorry, but comparing all routines with older demos,
you will find BETTER and FASTER routines. I haven't
seen Smash Designs' new demo presented at the
SymMek '97 yet, but I hope it is much better and de-
serves the first place of the competition.
I CAN'T give a higher rating than 27%.

                      RRR about the artwork:
                      --------------------
All graphics hitting the screen in this trackmo ware
have been created by AEG, who was aswell respon-
sible for the coding.

The first piece of art presented was a multicolour
bitmap fullscreen picture showing a Smash Designs
logo in the left and a PROBABLY by one of GIGER's
ALIEN creations inspirated monster in the right part
of the screen. Following there is an OLDSCHOOL mul-
ticolour bitmap fullscreen picture showing a sort of
MONK adding something to his journal, a Triage logo
and a sort of landscreen including two very STRANGE
looking figures (PLANTS?) and some mountains in the
background. Next in the row there is a Smash logo
in four colours (incl. background), the style is a sort
of mixture between OLD ENGLISH and RUNES.
The WARLOCK cover remake is probably the graphi-
cal highlight of the presentation, a picture what could
be splitted into three "independent" parts. In the left
part there is the face of a wizard, in the middle there
is a hand looking like being a frame in the current
movement to form a fist and finally in the right corner
there is an almost nude woman, perhaps inspirated by
DORO, Warlock's former singer? This picture was
FIRST RELEASED in 1987 in Mr. Cursor's "INIT DEMO"
for THE WANDERER GROUP drawn by PEGAGUS, AEG
called in a phonecall a RE-DRAW, so much just to calm
down any upcoming rumours.
The turn disk part contains a nice TRIAGE logo in
multicolour bitmap format, surely a bit inspirated by
former REDSTAR art who has introduced this kind of
style almost 8 years ago, showing the letters inte-
grated into a dead trees landscape. Well done, but
still looking a bit unfinished. Last but not least there
is a multicolour bitmap fullscreen picture showing a
girl's head, if you have a closer look at the DITHERING
you'll surely remark that it is destinated for the big
screen, so if you get back two or three meters it de-
finately looks much better compared with the NORMAL
distance of around fifty centimeters.

Generally it is nice to see that there are still people
who prefer the "standart" multicolour bitmap resolu-
tion of the CBM 64, to be more precise 160 by 200
pixels, instead of using one of those "modern" flicke-
ring formats. There have been shown some nice ideas
but unfortunately most of them look a bit unfinished
like being drawn under an extreme time pressure, so
the overall rating can only be at 71%.

                       Fanta about the music:
                       -----------------
The soundtrack was made by PVCF who seems to be
still a very POPULAR musician although he isn't active
anymore on C64 (atleast I think so). I wonder a bit
that AEG wrote KB and more to the credits list
because I COULDN'T find any musics by them.

The style of ALL three tunes is a kind of techno that
I personally DISLIKE. The first music was used in
Mathematica by Reflex and DON'T need to be reviewed
once again. The second tune brings us some COOL
hihat sounds and other stuff. One COULD THINK they
are double-speeded, but they AREN'T! It proves the
skilled abilities of PVCF when it comes to make some
outstanding sounds. The music itself is a bit BETTER
than the previous one, but NOT INNOVATIVE at all
(sorry Kai!). You should also notice that this tune is
ONE OF THE FEW made in the LSD routine by KB and
QUISS. OK, let's take a look at the last piece. This is
for sure the WORST one. I can't find any MUSIC at all
here so WHAT should I review?

Well, I'm really FED UP with all the other technotracks
produced nowadays, too. I HOPE that the people will
RECOGNIZE one day that probably only AMJ is able to
do some proper techno/trance tracks on C64!!! I also
hope that all coders will start to use UNRELEASED
musics only, as that's the way it has to be! Ups, back
to the review...
Well, I think the soundtrack DOESN'T shows the REAL
ABILITIES of PVCF like seen in 'KJU: for example. Also,
one or two of the tunes are already released so I
can give it a 25% only (sniff).

          * HIGHER LOVE/GRAFFITY PRODUKT *
------------------------------------------------------------
Higher Love has got a deeper meaning hear. Not only
that it is adapted from a songname of Depeche Mode's
album "Songs of faith and devotion", it has been the
HIGHER LOVE from the Graffity members returning to
the CBM 64 demo business after having been active
in the PC scene. Welcome back, comrades!

                      Fuben about the coding:
                      --------------------
This demo, presented at THE PARTY 6 in Aars/Den-
mark, got entirely coded by Clarence.

It starts in an impressive way. After depacking, a BIG
compond-sprite moves through the SIDE-BORDERS
with the text WE ARE BACK! The sprites are EXPAN-
DED but INTERLACED, so you get to see a HIGHER
RESOLUTION. This happens while the normal blue C64
system screen is shown.
After the screen fades off some moving dots (chars)
show the Hungarian flag. This effect isn't anything
special, but I think it has just to task to show the
flag. Following there are three logos coming up using
FLD presenting "Graffity Produkt presents". Next
there are two MULTIPLEXED SPRITE-SCROLLERS
which are moving both diagonally. In the background
you see a laced Koala-bitmap. All in all a QUITE NICE
and WELL-POLISHED intro!
After some loading two ZOOMING BALLS (made of X-Y
expanded sprites?) move around the screen. The
sprites show 3 different colors (SP1, SP2 and both
together). This is remarkable in my eyes! In the back-
ground you see a hires logo additionally! Following is
a picture in a new format called ADVANCED HIRES,
which is, I suppose, is nothing else than a usual hires
picture with a few hires sprites overlayed. But I think
it's a GOOD work to paint such a picture! Anyway, a
DOT-BALL comes up, which is rotated around 3 AXIS
and is TRANSFORMING and ZOOMING. The dots are
SHADED and the whole is ofcourse running in ONE
FRAME. In the lower part of the screen there is a
nice-looking scroller additionally (it's nice to see
something like this again after a long time). Later on
a BALL comes up again made of five LIGHT-SOURCED
lines ROTATING around the Y-AXIS while the ball is
bouncing through the upper SIDEBORDER, too! The
next part features a SIDEBORDER SCROLLER and a
Y-wanking logo (hires). Nothing special! After show-
ing a Koala-picture the end comes up. A 4 X 4 (!)
ROTZOOMER in a size of maybe 20x20 chars comes
up. This rotzoomer is seen a lot of times yet (just 16
X 16 textures)! But then there appears the text STOP
IT, expressing the programmers' feelings about all
those countless 4 X 4 (or even bigger) effects. But
then suddenly the same rotzoomer comes up again,
but now in a resolution of 2x2. This is looking much
much cooler in my eyes. I especially like the move-
ments!

All in all I have to say that all effects are running in
ONE FRAME only, what has to be rated POSITIVELY.
What a pity Clarence couldn't finish the demo in time!
I hope to see Graffity's next demo (JUSTINBLUE)
soon as I enjoyed watching this one-frame-demo a lot.
This demo definetely deserved a HIGHER RATING at
The Party VI. My rating: 84%

                      RRR about the artwork:
                      --------------------
The artwork for Higher Love has been drawn by
Cybortech and Ollie, who did most of the art.

The first piece of art is a NICE interlaced singleco-
lour hires "We are back" logo, followed by two multi-
colour interlace logos presenting "Graffity Produkt
presents" and "Higher Love". The format emulates a
resolution of 320 X 200 pixels in the Koala format,
offering a background colour for the entire picture
and three different colours per char, actually DRAZ-
LACE and MCI EDITOR are the only tools supporting
it. Both logos are looking good, the "Higher Love"
logo presents a different kind of marmor background
which is almost able to give some kind of 3D feeling.
Next in the row is a simple singlecolour hires "Graffi-
ty" logo. Ollie invented a new format called "ADVAN-
CED HIRES". It is nothing else but a plain hires pictu-
res and X-expanded sprites covering the full screen
switching their priority under the hires picture. The
demo picture shows probably the king of the dwarves
sitting on a throne and having a sceptre in his right
hand. It's very detailed but due to the format's limita-
tions in OTHER formats it probably could have been
MORE impressive, nevertheless this was a GOOD job!
Following there is another Graffity singlecolour hires
logo, this time a nice styling has been choosen, using
quite big outlines. Fullscreen pictures are a must in
multifile demos/trackmos, so a multicolour bitmap full-
screen picture is coming up, showing a hand and an
eye next to other details, overall, taking a closer
look at the dithering, there is the impression that it
got made for the big screen. Finally a very cool multi-
colour bitmap logo is coming up, presenting the group
name by using nice characters and fillings.

Graffity has been presenting overall good graphics
in their demo, especially the multicolour interlace art
has meet my interest. With most graphics on an above
average format my rating is 74%.

                       Fanta about the music:
                       -----------------
Responsible for the soundtrack are the Hungarian
musicians BRIAN, PEET and TAKI, so probably every-
body would expect a musicial artwork on a GOOD qua-
lity I guess. Not usual in a trackmo we have the
big amount of six different tunes instead of e.g. two
or three long ones. I think that's a GOOD variant to
AVOID too much boredom!

The demo is starting with a JAZZY like music by Brian
that is simple but quite OK, as you can even start to
whistle to the cool melody. Entering the loader part
we hear the first and also last music in this demo by
Taki with a very DUMP bass sound and some nice but
always repeating arpeggios. Due to it's slow feeling it
fits very well to the also slow moving balls on the
screen. Now once again Brian is taking over the
baton and he comes along with a coversion of one of
Johann-Sebastian Bach's compositions. Well done, but
all in all it isn't too hard to make such a conversion.
The next tune by Peet starts with a fading in snare
followed by a big smash, a simple bassline and some
arpeggios. Unfortunately Peet FAILED in transposing
the bassline CORRECTLY what causes a real EAR-
BURNER! However, the rest of this tune is pure
Hungarian styled, so nothing more to add here. I also
don't want to say much about Brian's next tune as
it's a music that COULDN'T be more typical of Brian's
style. NO SPECIAL effects here. NOT so typical is the
end and at the same time best tune of this production.
I have listened to it for several times now and I still
CAN'T GET ENOUGH of that. Maybe it is the simple but
really FITTING bassline or the CATCHY melodie, I don't
know. I just have to give it a BIG APPLAUSE.

Coming to a final conclusion it seems to me that the
composers have done a GOOD job. Nevertheless I
have to DECREASE the rating A LOT because atleast
two or more tunes were ALREAD SRELEASED! I think
55% is fair, isn't it?

Party Radar

                          * PARTY RADAR *
------------------------------------------------------------
Our PARTY RADAR is once again THE place to be visi-
ted when it comes up to party invitations, party re-
ports and competition results.

Unlike in the previous issues we have focused more
on short party reviews and reports this time as the
past few weeks have shown a bit of the so-called ce-
lebration generation partying in various locations
across Europe.
NORTH PARTY, KERNEL, THE GATHERING, SILICON-
VENTION, MEKKA & SYMPOSIUM, X-97 and SCENEST
have been the places of pilgrimage for the disciples
of the demo scene or for those who just wanted to
have a good time with some scene fellows. Seven par-
ties in four months, having a look at this number only
there is nothing to complain about.
Parties in the eastern regions just like Hungary or
Poland are normally not too interesting for western
sceners, the distance for just a computer weekend
is by far too long and surely too expensive, so we
focused the parties in the northern and western
parts of Europe and have had a short look on the
Scenest in Hungary.

According to the attenders of the SCENEST 1997 it
was one of the WORST organised events ever. Until
now the organisers did not even manage it to pre-
sent an acceptable official results textfile including
all the names of the certain productions and contri-
butors, so we were very grateful for the helping
hand from LION/Chromance who invested some time to
present an UPDATED and almost COMPLETE results
textfile.

THE GATHERING in Norway is an absolute HIGHLIGHT
and established event for the AMIGA and PC society,
so the INVITATION for CBM 64 related sceners was
quite promising, offering 2 blocks, demo and music
competitions for the CBM 64. UNLIKE advertised on
their homepage there was no CBM 64 competition ma-
chine NOR did any of the organisers know anything
about CBM 64 competitions! Nobody felt to be re-
sponsible for it so ALL CBM 64 competitions got can-
celled, using the LACK OF QUALITY as a weak excuse
to calm down the annoyed visitors. This kind of be-
haviour against the MOTHER of all scenes can't be
accepted! Perhaps a BOYKOTT from CBM 64 related
users would be an alternative to react on that kind
of behaviour, as with Antimon, Hack'n Trade, Sapphire
and Shape & Impulse four demo contributions were o-
riginally planned to be released here, people who in-
vested some time into their productions in order to
present them on the big screen. Thumbs down for The
Gathering and their organisers!

The easter weekend turned out to become the date to
visit one of two parties in Germany. Two parties at
the SAME time, divided by a distance of around 80 km
have frustrated a lot of persons. Instead of celebra-
ting two excellent parties, perhaps one at easter and
the second in autumn, a sort of competition started
with MEKKA & SYMPOSIUM outclassing SILICONVEN-
TION by far(party report follows). A proposal for the
organisers of both parties: wouldn't it be more use-
ful to unite forces and to introduce two excellent
parties at two totally different dates in order to
please the fastidious visitors always looking for good
organised and entertaining, not to say ULTIMATIVE,
events? The scene, parties should be made for the
scene, would be surely more grateful!
Originally we intended to publish the OFFICIAL Sili-
convention 1997 results, but until now we did not re-
ceive them. On our request Tino Gietschel, the main
organiser, pointed out that they are going to be
published on Wednesday (April 23rd, 1997) at the of-
ficial Siliconvention homepage. No official results of a
party taking place three weeks ago is surely NOT a
sign of a good organisation, an incident like this
should give an impression about the party itself.
There have been inofficial results posted on the (US)
boards, we prefer to work with confirmed information
only, so we renounced to present data here turning
out to become imcomplete or incorrect in a not too
far distant.

Four days after closing the doors in Germany the
X-97 opened their days in Eindhoven/Holland. Taking
the CBM 64 visitors into consideration it was defina-
tely NO success, even if the LOCATION and ORGANI-
SATION was the BEST ever seen in the history of the
X-parties. The fixture was NOT very clever choosen
as X-97 turned out to be the third party within one
week in an area of 500 km so the low amount of CBM
64 attenders can be explained by either party tired-
ness aswell as by the cost factor. End of April or
perhaps early May would have been a more clever
date.
The Relax Magazine has visited this event and Max is
currently working on a party report going to be re-
leased in issue # 21.

Maybe some organisers pick up one or another idea
in order to realise a lot of parties worth to be visited
next year, otherwise the situation will remain similar
and at each party only a few hand-selected people
support their computer system instead of more MA-
JOR events with MORE visitors, a situation benefitting
BOTH, organisers and visitors!

               Mekka & Symposium Party Report
               ----------------------------
The party was held in a long Easter weekend from
March 28th to 31st in the HEIDMARKHALLE of Falling-
bostel/Germany.

The official opening ceremony took place on March
28th at 08.00 p.m. with a pretty BIG on-screen-show
comparable with a demo as we know it these days. At
that time already 500 sceners attended the party
which was a big surprise as last years event just
finally made it up to his number. Counting the sceners
which were related to the C64 in past and present it
were all in all around 150 people, perhaps even more.
Groups such as Alpha Flight 1970, Hitmen, Oxyron,
Chromance, Masters Design Group, Triad, Excess
and many more were present to prove that there is
still some life left in the scene. The best thing was
that all those groups were MORE EASY TO FIND than
for example at THE PARTY, a party officially announ-
cing its 1997 EVENT here.
The C64 was focused here more than on any (!) other
event held these days, the competitions had its extra
events for the C64 such as C64 4k intro, C64 demo,
C64 graphics and C64 music competition. At THE
PARTY the music, graphics and 4k competitions were
for all systems only. Already this made the Mekka &
Symposium to be a prefect event, but the organisers
have had further unique ideas. The other competi-
tions were just BRILLIANT, like e.g. SHOE-THROWING
(KB/The Obsessed Maniacs did NOT get his one back)
or the SUPER-SOAKER.
Another just perfect idea worth to be reported from
this party was the show-master STEELER, an enter-
tainer really worth being watched. There was abso-
lutely NO chance to define the Symposium and Mekka
party to be a boring event or lacking entertainment,
the organisers even presented an INTERNET-CAFE
having opened its doors almost during the entire
event, surely it does NOT need to be pointed out here
that the access was offered for free, aswell as a BIG
party-network for everyone which was WORKING (at
THE PARTY it broke down every often and could NOT
be used most of the time).
A big THANK YOU for an almost perfect party must go
to CHAOTIC/SMASH DESIGNS)HITMEN)NET*PHREA-
KERS, being the C64 party host and really managing
all C64 related events and stuff such as the compe-
titions or the public C64 attenders list.

In order to prevent this party lacking action in any
way on the screen or on stage there have been some
live-acts all the time.
KB/TOM was playing e-piano and Oliver Klee/MDG
blowing his trumpet have been the first live perfor-
mance, followed by NoiseDrift, Ronnie/TekLords at
the turn-tables and with Accept doing it even twice
you never felt any boredom. Furthermore there was
a Saturday night birthday celebration for two diffe-
rent sceners getting gifts from the organisers.
For people being interesting in sleeping those could
have been very lucky compared to other party pla-
ces. There have been facilities to sleep in WARM and
SILENT sleeping halls or for the hardliners under
the tables to protect their equipment.

Until now this looked like a commercial presentation
for the Mekka & Symposium, surely there have been
NEGATIVE aspects which can't be hidden here, too.
The absolute NEGATIVE highlight was a drunken mem-
ber of LIGHTFORCE who was out on trial got arrested
for ATTACKING the organisers TWICE, once with a big
knife and the second time with a big glas fragment.
Before that took place he was tagging all the walls
inside and outside of the hall.
As usual, a bad tradition indeed, lots of equipment got
stolen, such as PCs, CD-WRITERs or AMIGAs. Fur-
thermore some equipment got blown up due to FALSE
connected power cables.
Finally the C64 competitions have been very disap-
pointing with only FOUR demos contributing, contain-
ing two from the organisers which were ranked - due
to the lack of competitors - on the first two places.
So much about the negative aspects, there are still
some more positive to come.

For the first time in the history of this party the
prices were featuring price-money in a total of
11.000 DEM next to all those hardware-prices such
as 32bit CreativeLabs Soundbasters. No matter a
group or its members have been successful or not,
there have been the change to get something in an
event called LION-FEEDING. It is a quite fitting name
for what happened here. The organisers were throw-
ing tons of hardware and software (CDs) into the
crown, and it's no big deal to guess what happened...
It really caused a serious mess infront of the stage.

A big surprise for the organisers and attenders of
the Mekka & Symposium was the appereance of Slide/
Oxyron already at late Saturday night, being intro-
duced as an organiser of the Siliconvention. Being
asked about comments concering the Siliconvention
only negative facts got reported, it turned out to be-
come quite clear that Siliconvention was a disaster.
Nevertheless Slide did already planned INFRONT of
both parties to show up at both places, his organiser
job was NOTHING else but setting up the rules for the
Amiga competitions (what he did in cooperation with
RRR).

What about other systems next to the C64? Well, of-
course masses of PC and Amiga scene related per-
sons did show up, but compared with THE PARTY they
did NOT dominate the whole event. In the previous
years the Amiga users have felt like the kings of all
systems while this time the reputation of C64 related
people infact has risen a bit. People were really in-
terested in what is going in and about the releases
nowadays. Believe it or not, even the majestic Amiga
users have been paying RESPECT to the C64 scene.

Finally, ment as a reminder for those guys still being
shocked about the negative facts, people should keep
in mind that the consumption of BEER, WEED and CI-
GARETTES inside the party hall was allowed! Nobody
can really expect a quite peaceful party when people
are allowed to drink alcohol, with that single excep-
tion this party did fortunately prove the opposite.

The competition results look like this:

So much about the Mekka & Symposium 1997, be sure
to show up at next year's event, too, an event alrea-
dy having been announced by a short textfile. Due to
the fact that there is still one year to go and no de-
tailed information has been given we decided not to

Without the support of the following persons this
party radar wouldn't have been possible in the pre-
sented version. Many thanks must go out to:
NED/ALPHA FLIGHT 1970)NET*PHREAKERS for the
Mekka & Symposium 1997 party report, GLENN RUNE
GALLEFOSS/SHAPE/BLUEZ MUZ for the information
about The Gathering 1997 and last but not least to
LION/CHROMANCE for the fixed Scenest 1997 re-
sults.

As a short preview for the next issue Max will note
down his unique views on the X-97 event here, just
remember his extended 1996 version.

Best regards,

Welcome to the area of advertisements where you
get the chance to offer the rest of the world the
possibility to either contact you as a trader or
just to place a request through us.

To see your advertisement in this chapter you HAVE
to fill one of our votesheets as the total amount of
adverts fortunately increased between the past few
months. Therefore we installed a NEW presentation
system and if the amount of filled votesheets increa-
ses in the same way we feel free to cut off the sup-
porting advertisement text. Telephone numbers or In-
ternet addresses can be found at the end of the ad-
dress line(s).

When the amount of addresses is growing in the same
way like during the past few days we feel free to re-
move the supporting text and to print the address
only in order to save memory as we do not feel like
filling the entire magazine with advertisement chap-
