THE MAKING OF THE AUSTRALIAN SCENE PARTY 1993 ---------------------------------------- hello dudes, this is GIORGIO ARMANI/TSR on the keyboard typing up the party report. this was 2am 18th july 1993. ---------------------------------------- A COMPLETE PARTY REPORT after months of preparation by me and others helpers, we TSR showed them it could be done. when many other groups have said about getting a party together in the past that never evenuates, TSR made one that promised to be the best. and it was... the party invitation was sent 3 months prior to the party. the aim was to gather potential support. more than 40 people responded with interest. however only 80% of those actually made it! for a while there was worries of cash flow problems as well as finding a suitable venue. originally the PENRITH WELLINGTON CENTRE was thought to be the place for the party. however, towards the end, they changed their price from $100 for 2 days to $100 for 4 hours! and this was 2 weeks before the party date!! fortunately, we found another place at the SYDNEY ROOTY HILL SCOUT HALL for a reasonable price. the venue was accessible by train. people were allowed to stay overnight. there were toilet, cooking facilities, hot-water as well as heaters. not to mention being 3 mins to the shops, opposite to tennis and squash courts and reserves, this was the perfect place for the party. one week before the party, confirmations were sent. monies for the party flowed in all the way to the night before the party. it was alot of work to be done but it was all worth it. on the day on the 17th at 7am, i being the organiser, arrived at the hall to set up the place. there were fancy COMMODORE signs hanging all around the hall. not bad for some lies at the world of commodore sydney to convince COMMODORE to give us those decorations. between 9-10am, people slowly arrived and set up their machines. ALCHEMY/TSR and his friends brought along four computers. thanks ben! MEGAZZAP/TSR brought plenty of tables for the party. great thanks to you greg. and of course everyone else brought their latest warez for a messive copying session. in all there was 31 people attended the party. my thanks to those who supported this party - my first attempt of this magnitude in the scene. the sceners who were there includes: (not in any order) GIORGIO ARMANI/TSR UPTONOGOOD/TSR MEGAZZAP/TSR INCUBUS/EX-TSR CRUZE/LITHIUM ALCHEMY/TSR GOP/FURY DR. FATE/LITHIUM LOGIC/TSR ARSENAL/IBM SCENE STEVE/TSR TBH/MSR-LITHIUM DEADBONE/BREEZE D. 8-BALL/CURE CAINE/EX-HYPE SHOCKER/BATTERY DNA/EX-LITHIUM MORBID/REBELS IMAGE/EX-ADDICTS IMPACT/AMIGA SCENE WITTY MATTHEW DANIEL/AMIGA STROBE MARK BEATTIE/AMIGA FADE/LITHIUM TROY KELLY/AMIGA SOLE TRADER visitors: HEXHACKER/TERA SNOOP/TERA METRO/BREEZE D. PAUL COOK as you can see, there were quite a few well-known oz sceners turned up. NEPTUNE/TSR was absent from the party which his ticket went to MORBID/REBELS. the first day of the party was mainly to show off warez of the latest. although copying was underway not long after lunch. sceners mingled among themselves as if they were friends for life! UPTONOGOOD and STEVE/TSR bought along a videocorder to capture all the actions. no doubt, others did the same with their cameras. there were the TSR shot, the LITHIUM shot, the MISC. sceners shot, the leaders shot, the TSR-LTM friends again shot, the oldies shot, etc...... my mag (the first TSR PAPERMAG) called INTERFACE was also released at the party with great response. you see, i brought along 40 copies and they were all gone. there wasn't even that many people at de party! this first edition of INTERFACE was produced with an ibm and a postscript laser printer. an upcoming issue will guaranteed to be released as a result of this positive response. LITHIUM released another issue of their disk mag FORM. STROBE AND WITTY (now groupless and looking for a euro crew) released a demo called STEAM. STEAM was entered in the demo competition and won first. congratulation! for dinner, there were plans to go to SIZZLER. but as we arrived 7pm, we saw 200 people waiting outside to be seated. the thought of a long wait was too overwhelmed for MEGAZZAP and i that we decided to hit on MCDONALDS! others went to pizza hut and takeaways. of course, we terrorised all these places. as the sky went dark, couple of sceners went to the local telephones to phreak to their europian friends. they succeed in getting through to some while fucking up other phones completely. by morning, not one phone in the entire district was working. and there were at least 2 telecom trucks fixing the problems on that sunday morning. THANKS GUYS! (FROM THE ROOTY HILL PEOPLE) still they never stop cos clicking went for the second day as well. by then some sceners who weren't as competent of clicking mastered the trade. this would be valuable lessons for them i'm sure. i'm just glad that no one was caught. the second day of the party was quieter than the first day as many sceners did not sleep during the whole night. 8-BALL and SHOCKER went out to the city before 9pm and came back in the morning. there were quite a few zombies in the morning who were still glued to their computer screens. but there's nothing caffines cannot fix up! after 10 am, the place was alive again thanks to the nestle coffee. there was alot of copying going on like there was no tomorrow. CRUZE/LITHIUM came in the morning with about 300 amiga disks and went home with at least 150 filled! i hope he's pleased with the result. in the afternoon, the competition was on. first, there was the graphics competition. DEADBONE/BREEZE D. who promised to come back on time never did. so he missed out. there were 3 entries from MEGAZZAP/TSR, WITTY and GOP. then, there was the music competition which had 6 entries from MORBID, ALCHEMY FADE, NEPTUNE, GOP and WITTY. just to mention that WITTY'S ENTRY was only a joke he said! and you can see why when you look at the votes below. after that, we went on with the demo competition. TBH entered 2 entry while STROBE entered STEAM. finally, there was the lucky draw for everyone attended the party. the prize is a pack of 10 3.5" high dense misubishi disk worth $40. the draw was won by MORBID/REBELS which he later sold to LOGIC/TSR for $10!!! the competition results were: DEMO COMPETITION: ---------------------------------------- name entry votes prize ---------------------------------------- 1st STROBE & WITTY STEAM 20 $50 2nd TBH BOBS 5 $30 3rd TBH GFX INTRO 1 10 disk ---------------------------------------- the results were apparent as STEAM was far superior with more work. the vectors were very nice. congrats to STROBE. GRAPHICS COMPETITION: name entry vote prize ---------------------------------------- 1st MEGAZZAP/TSR BEAST 38 $40 2nd WITTY STEAM 36 $20&10disk 3rd GOP/FURY THE GATE 22 10 disks ---------------------------------------- MEGAZZAP won by a slim margin of two votes. WITTY could have won if he didn't lose his compo gfx on the day. the STEAM entry wasn't meant to be entered! it was good effort from GOP too. anyway, well done everyone. well done. MUSIC COMPETITION: name vote prize ---------------------------------------- 1st MORBID/REBELS 55 $40 2nd ALCHEMY/TSR 53 $20 & 10 disks 3rd FADE/LITHIUM 34 10 disks 4th NEPTUNE/TSR 33 - 5th GOP/FURY 31 - 6th WITTY 1 - ---------------------------------------- lots of response from musicians. MORBID won which was no surprise. the others were also quite close showing diverse talent. congrats to ALCHEMY and FADE especially cos its their first tune ever it was fair results. no smuggled votes cos i made sure of that! no cheating or buying votes. the competition results for the first in all categories are fairly obvious anyway! the competition had been a success looking at the number of entries entered. the number of entries was also helped by a boost of prize money which attracted late entrants. the party ended at 7pm sharp. that was when DEADBONE decided to turn up. no kidding! maybe he'll learn not to do graphics too late at night so that he can get up during daytime. all went well at the packing and closing of the party. the party had met everyone's expectation. everyone had walk away with what they wanted whether that's FRIENDSHIP, WAREZ, COMPO, OR JUST PURE FUN. anyway, many people encouraged me to prepare for the next party. i think i'll have a well-deserved break first. i must say i've had all the fun of doing it. hopefully i can expect a greater response at the next TSR PARTY as people spread the good words about this one. i'm not sure when the next one be. but i think it'll be either OCTOBER or JANUARY. ok, that's all from me. thanks to all the people who supported me. thanks to PAUL COOK of the rooty hill scouts for the hall. thanks to god for the sunny day. and finally thank you to you sceners for making the scene all very worthwhile! without the scene i wouldn't know there are that many great people all around australia. thank you. thank you once again. sweet dreams!
