THE APRIL EDITION - ------------ - 1998 'THE CREST' (c) Independent _TALES OF THE CREST_ --------------------------- ...and again another month went by since the last edition. Welcome to the latest edition of your beloved THE CREST MAGAZINE, the one and only real net/bbs based media. Somehow this edition is also a reason for celebration, because this is the 10th issue in the still very young history of this maga- zine. But we won't have much time to celebrate, coz with releasing this edition we are already workin' on the next one (the 11th). So many of you asked themselves, how we can manage it to release the magazine always in time month by month.. You can believe us, we also asked this ourselves quite often but despite all appearing problems, we manage it every month to release the magazine. Perhaps a phenomena? Who knows... During the last month there didn't happen anything important concerning The Crest Magazine itself. This also can be seen positiv as there haven't been any loses within the staff... So let's have some credits... scene spotlighter
__ ___________________________________ __ SCENE SPOTLIGHTER -- ----------------------------------- -- This month the action was quite okay. There happened a bunch of things, especially in two, three groups... But still the action can't be compared with the good old days, where we would have had this amount of news in about one week only instead of one month. But this just also leaves me in a good position: I haven't got to write that much, hehe! But that's the only positive thing about it, sad but true. Anyway, worrying doesn't help, so let's start off... FAIRLIGHT [den, ger, swe...] -- ------------------------------------------------ -- New members: GLENN, SHARK Gone ones..: CLIVE, GOAT, L. A. STYLE, MENDRAKE, MINDFLOW, RED DEVIL Board........: WAREZ AQUARIUM +XX-XXX-XXXX EHQ Again many changes here... First of all RED DEVIL finally announced that he left the scene. But later on they got a new composer for him. GLENN RUNE GALLEFOSS alias SHARK/SHAPE teamed up with them as second group. Then also GLENN left his old group IMPULSE to join FAIRLIGHT as coder. As time went on they also lost some more members... First of all GOAT decided to leave to stay in the rising LAXITY only and later on MENDRAKE, MINDFLOW and L. A. STYLE followed him to LAXITY. At the end of the month also CLIVE left the scene and so of course also the group because of losing interest and inspiration. Memberstatus: --------------- CROSSFIRE, DRUID, DUKE, GLENN, HARLEKIN, OSWALD, ROWDY, SHARK, SLEDGE, VODKA, WATCHMAN LAXITY [ger, svk, den...] -- ---------------------------------------------- -- New members: L. A. STYLE, MENDRAKE, MINDFLOW SPERMBIRD Gone ones....: HOLDEN Boards.......: DRAGON'S TOWER +XX-XXX-XXX-XXXX EHQ THE HIDDEN +XX-XXX-XXX-XX GHQ FTP-Site.......: ACID NATURE ftp.ogre2vsk.edu.lv/acid-nature/c64 At the beginning of the month GOAT decided to leave FAIRLIGHT to concentrate on LAXITY as co-leader. Later on MENDRAKE, MINDFLOW and L. A. STYLE also left FAIRLIGHT to team up with the other LAXITY guys. Then they also gained a new megaswapper... SPERMBIRD joined them as second group besides CHROMANCE. HOLDEN got kicked out of the group because of inactivity. Memberstatus: -------------- ANIMALO, DAN DEE, DIDI, GOAT, GOTHIC, KBS, L. A. STYLE, MANIK, MENDRAKE, MINDFLOW, NIC, O'DOG, RAVER, SPERMBIRD, SKYHAWK, TROOP SHAPE [nor, bos] -- ----------------------------------------------- -- New members: GCS, KMEG, NUCLEUS, SLIVER Gone ones..: - The norwegian group seems to want to make a huge comeback. First they got NUCLEUS to leave his former group TEMPEST to join up with SHAPE as coder. Two other new coders in their rows are GCS and KMEG, who wants to stay in ALBION besides this. Then SLIVER joined them as graphician as second group besides F4CG. They also announced that their music-label called BLUEZ MUZ isn't dead as written in their music collection named BASIC. Memberstatus: --------------- ANDREAS, HANS PETTER ANDERSEN, ROLF RUNAR BAKKE, GLENN RUNE GALLEFOSS, GCS, MORTEB JOHANSEN, KMEG, NUCLEUS, SVEINUNG PEDERSEN, KRISTIAN ROSTOEN, SLIVER, EIVIND SOMMERSTEN, GEIR TJELTA, RICHARD VELTA That were all major news once again... For single news check out the next few pages! SINGLE NEWS: - -------- - - A guy called JES joined ASCRAEUS as web designer. Also DARIO came back an named himself into FNORF. Later on ABADDON left DAMAGE to team up with ASCRAEUS as composer. Memberstatus: -------------- ABADDON, AEGIS, BRIZZ, CAISSON, CODY, FNORF, JES, KSIN, LUKE, MADHEAD, NAPHALM, SKATE, SKYCLAD, SOLOMON, UFO - THE FALCON/PENTAGRAM PRODUCTIONS decided to leave the scene and so his group PENTAGRAM PROD. died. - The group EXTACY is back in the scene. oversea scene report
The "Overseas" Scene Report Compiled by Uzzy of RPG Well, boys and girls, welcome to yet another chapter regarding the NTSC news of the month. This, of course, is in THE CREST Issue No. 10, which is sort of a milestone issue, especially for a mag which consistently is released on time. But enough about that. A word about this month's news... I spent close to five hours on the net last night trying to find the smallest inkling of some news, and aside from a couple demos being released, nothing new appeared to happen! Taking my job as seriously as I do, I then went on a rampage and found at least a FEW pieces of news. As is usual, if I'm wrong or if I left something out, please Email all corrections, new information, group memberlists, marriage proposals and death threats to ME at: (arthur.heller(at)anwcbbs.uu.holonet.net) And it helps my brain when that happens. Also, I have a slight proposition for all you NTSC freaks out there... The Crest, normally, has the news and charts for the PAL scene, and it suddenly occured to me to compile an NTSC chart thingie! God only knows how well it will work, but I will be setting it up shortly. If the response to it is pathetic, I will discontinue it. Of course, everyone is welcome to vote in these charts. I will mail them out over the Internet, after I concieve of a suitable letter to go out with it. Stay tuned. And now, the news: - Loadstar 128, a commercial diskmag, has evidently ceased publication. Apparently subscriptions are thinning out, which is a bad thing for the C64 scene. Loadstar 64 will continue unabated, thankfully. - A slight retraction; I didn't mention this last month. Apparently Megmyx of Storm has fallen off the earth, and Storm has put him on inactive. - Anarchy, the only eleven year old group to have no releases, has announced the decision to focus mainly on demos, and is taking their 80 page megademo, Happy Hour, breaking it into pieces, and releasing it as a series. And, of course, the ubiquitous group-list update: ANARCHY: Brozzmo, Grubby, Scanner BCI: Local-H, Phred, Sketch, Udd CARCASS: Deathangel's Shadow, Fungus, Hoffman, Natas, Necrophobic, Pinball Wizard, Shadowmaster, TMR, Wideload, Zirc0 ELECTRON: Dokken, The Gambler FORCES OF EVIL: The Phantom, Paladin, Wrong Way FROM THE ASHES: Burning Horizon, Diskmaster, Firestalker, Trillian MILLENIUM: Roy Batty, The Fatman OMNI: Bonestripper, Light, Nerves, Prowler, Spectre PSW: MacBeth, Shroom, Fuzz RPG: Chameleon, Cyberad, Dr.Doom, The Heretic, Ken, Pegasus, Uber, Uzzy STORM: Cybernoid, Negspect STYLE: Alter Ego, Deathlok, Decomp, DW, Elwix, Firefoot, Massive Onslaught, PK, Repose, Warnock, The Wiz VENOM: Hobbit, Kickback, WSoft ZONE II: Dungeon Master Thassit for this NTSC news. Stay tuned for next month, when something might happen :). -Uzzy/RPG-

__ ___________________________________ __ RULERS OF THE MONTH -- ----------------------------------- -- Welcome to the charts once again. This time the lists aren't that good, because we didn't recieve many votesheets! So, please give us your votes! Just fill our votesheet or scribble down your votes on any kind of piece of paper and send it to: SASCHA HERBRIG, FRANKFURTER ALLEE 163, 10365 BERLIN, GERMANY or deliver us your votes via E-mail to DYTEC(at)HOTMAIL.COM or leave me(HARDSEQUENCER) your votes via mail on the major us-boards! But now let's start the show... SMASH DESIGNS finally took the top spot with kicking OXYRON down to 3. And I guess the guys from SMASH will become even more popular, because there's said to be another demo from them out at the MEKKA+SYMPOSIUM. The real winner of the month are COMA, who climbed from 10 up to place number 4! Also their close friends from RESOURCE, whom they recently released a demo with, got more points and entered the Top 10 on the 9th place. -- ---------------------------------------------- -- THE TOP 10 CRACKING GROUPS ------------------------ -- >>> 01.(>) ALPHAFLIGHT 1970..................(151) <<< 02.(+) SUCCESS + THE RULING COMPANY......(131) 03.(-) HITMEN............................(088) 04.(+) LAXITY............................(086) 05.(-) FANTASTIC FOUR CRACKING GROUP.....(053) 06.(-) CHROMANCE.........................(038) 07.(+) FAIRLIGHT.........................(021) 08.(-) ONSLAUGHT.........................(020) 09.(+) DYTEC.............................(014) 10.(+) REMEMBER..........................(013) (+ ) means better position than last month __ ___________________________________ __ Comments: --------- ALPHAFLIGHT 1970 managed to stay the no.1 in the world of cracking. The next two places, SCS+TRC and HITMEN, changed once again. LAXITY made a good jump from 6 to 4, as well as FAIRLIGHT, who climbed from 9 to 7. DYTEC and REMEMBER came in for EXCESS and the dead MOTIV 8. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -- THE TOP 10 CODERS --------------- -- >>> 01.(+) CROSSBOW/CREST.......................(122) <<< 02.(+) AEG/SMASH DESIGNS....................(111) 03.(-) MR. He is the number 1 again! MR. SEX had to go down 2 places to 3 by then, while AEG made a good jump from 5 up to 2! The two OXYRON guys GRAHAM and FUBEN fell two and one place. Highest new entry is OSWALD on the 6th place. Seems people liked his style in VOID. -- ---------------------------------------------- -- THE TOP 10 GAME CRACKERS ---------------------- -- >>> 01.(+) JACK ALIEN/REMEMBER.................(103) <<< 02.(+) BURGLAR/SCS +TRC....................(092) 03.(+) DIDI/LAXITY.........................(090) 04.(-) IGNORANCE/ALPHAFLIGHT 1970..........(089) 05.(-) MOONCHILD/HITMEN....................(058) 06.(+) MARC/ALPHAFLIGHT 1970...............(020) 07.(+) CROSSFIRE/FAIRLIGHT.................(015) 08.(+) COUNT ZERO/SCS + TRC................(014) 09.(+) NAPHALM/ONSLAUGHT/SCORN.............(013) 10.(+) CHRYSAGON/ALPHAFLIGHT 1970..........(012) __ ___________________________________ __ Comments: --------- Massive changes we have here this month. So of course also a new number 1 again... This time JACK ALIEN did it by jumping up there from 3 last month. Also BURGLAR and DIDI both climbed two places, while IGNORANCE had to go down two places instead. Loser of the month is MOONCHILD, without any doubt. Formerly number one he is now only on the 5th place. All surpringly MARC made it to the Top 10 as highest new entry on the 6th position. -- ------------------------------------------------ -- THE TOP 10 GRAPHIC ARTISTS ------------------------ -- >>> 01.(>) DEEKAY/CREST..................(120) <<< 02.(+) JOE/WRATH DESIGN..............(090) 03.(+) RAYDEN/ALPHAFLIGHT 1970.......(074) 04.(-) VALSARY/LEPSI DE..............(069) 05.(-) ELECTRIC/EXTEND...............(061) 06.(+) SEBALOZ/LEPSI DE..............(038) 07.(+) DANE/CREST....................(035) 08.(-) CRUISE/TABOO..................(034) (+) AEG/SMASH DESIGNS.............(034) 10.(+) TYRANT/THERAPY................(032) __ ___________________________________ __ Comments: --------- Also big changed here... Only constant factor is DEEKAY, who kept the top spot with a nice lead. JOE came up from 4 to 2, while RAYDEN is the surprise of the month with climbing from 10 up to 3! Seems people like his converted graphics... ELECTRIC didn't have a nice month. From 2 he had to go down to 5! Highest new entry is DANE. And he'll probably climb even more after the release of REFUGEE! -- ------------------------------------------------ -- THE TOP 10 SOUND WIZARDS -- ------------------ -- >>> 01.(+) MITCH+DANE/CREST....................(114) <<< 02.(-) JEFF/CAMELOT........................(042) 03.(+) P. Just after one month MITCH +DANE gained the top spot back again with a huge distance to JEFF, the former number one. PRI climbed one place and DRAX even three and now they are sharing the third place. Highest new entries are FANTA and ECO, who both jumped right in on the 6th place. Other new entries are TRIDENT and ORCAN. -- ----------------------------------------------- -- That were the charts once again... By the way, in case you are wondering: A group/guy needs at least votes from two different sceners to enter the charts, otherwise these charts would be quite unfair, wouldn't they?!? The next month's charts will show some kind of direction for the near future, because in April we have some really interesting parties taking place, which surely will cause some action in the legal lists... the march list
-- ----------------------------------- -- THE MARCH LIST! __ ___________________________________ __ And again I can welcome you in my CHAPTER for THE CREST MAGAZINE! Once again we had a quite active MONTH releasewise and this means a lot of work for me... ;). As always you can contact me for questions and comments on the MAJOR US-BOARDS or under my email: THE_DODGER(at)HOTMAIL.COM -- -------------------------------------------- -- SPOTLIGHT NEWS MARCH __ ___________________________________ __ The action on the BOARDS was on an quite good level, but it seems that some groups are already celebrating the summer hole... ;)! THE DUNGEON is still down, and besides the SYSOP no one seems to know anything about it... sad! After the HD-crash in FEBRUARY the good old EVIL ISLAND is still running with half power, that means it's still running with the small HD. But the SYSOP, ANCIENT MARINER, promised a new HD to be online soon, so that the BOARD will run again with full power in the near future! A NEW RULE: ------------- Finally we decided (together with our comrades from PROGANANDA, RELAX, DOMINATION and VANDALISM NEWS) to do something against the flood of old wares released today! Since there are million of 64-Games out there it's impossible for us to have every single GAME on a DISK/CD. Sometimes we had the last months (and this month again...) GAMES where we had the prove that the GAME got SOLD/RELEASED through a company, but where we couldn't find a single CRACK of it. Usually we had to give FULL POINTS for this... . But from this ISSUE every GAME SOLD/RELEASED through any company before 1990 will be judged as a RE-RELEASE! CORRECTIONS: ------------- Last month I gave LEGEND the POINTS for the game 'PERFECT WEAPON'... Now I finally got the prove that the game got released as 'DEATH DEALER' by THE WANDERER GROUP years ago. TAO/TRIAD released a small COMPILATION of TOOLS and I gave 1,5 POINTS for it. SORRY that I forgot to include this last ISSUE. These CORRECTIONS will only influence the complete RELEASELIST for 1998... you know?! That was all for the general comments/informations. Let's take a closer look on the MARCH-RELEASES... . CHROMANCE (hun, ger , swe...) 2,2 POINTS ----------------------------------------------------- The guys in CHROMANCE released the fixed version of the more than crappy TETRIS ORIGINAL (2,2 POINTS). FAIRLIGHT (swe, den, aus...) -10,0 POINTS ----------------------------------------------------- A bunch of games made it under the FAIRLIGHT-flag to the drives... . First they put out MAHGONG - SPECIAL EDITION (0,0 POINTS) which got coded in BASIC. The next one was again a BASIC-game named FLYER (0,0 POINTS). Also ASYLUM (-5,0 POINTS) made it to the drives. The game got released back in the 80's and that's the reason, why it got counted as RE-RELEASE! The next 2 games got released by LOADSTAR in the 80's: KING RANSOM (-5,0 POINTS) and ZORPHON (-5,0 POINTS). After all they released a small BASIC-game named SENAT (0,0 POINTS). For sure no good month for FAIRLIGHT... . LAXITY (ger, hol, lev...) 2,8 POINTS ---------------------------------------------------------- The guys in LAXITY started with the small PREVIEW of TAMAGOTCHI (0,2 POINTS)... . As ONSLAUGHT fixed their version of IT'S MAGIC (2,6 POINTS), they share the POINTS with them. LEGEND (ger, nor, hol...) 0,2 POINTS ---------------------------------------------------------- Finally the PREVIEW of FIREPOWER (0,2 POINTS) made it to the BOARDS... . ONSLAUGHT (aus, den, ger...) 5,0 POINTS ---------------------------------------------------------- The guys in ONSLAUGHT returned once more and released 2 games... . The first one was the fixed version of FOUR BY FOUR (2,4 POINTS). Since the included TRAINER don't worked and the CRACKER did a small fuckup with the HIGH- SCORES, I took 1,0 POINTS away! This month they also fixed IT'S MAGIC (2,6 POINTS) for LAXITY and gained half of the POINTS for this one! PENTAGRAM (tur, ger, swe...) -4,6 POINTS ---------------------------------------------------------- Before they died again they released some stuff... . First they released the FIXED ( ;)) PREVIEW of SPOOK (0,3 POINTS). Later they put out the PREVIEW of COLONISATION (0,1 POINTS). After all they released QUOTA (-5,0 POINTS) which got released before by ONSLAUGHT! SUCCESS AND TRC (hol, ger, usa...) 0,2 POINTS ---------------------------------------------------------- The dutch COOP released the small PREVIEW of PURPLE HAZE (0,2 POINTS)! This were all the RELEASES from MARCH... quite a lot in my opinion... Let's see who made it to the TOP SPOT! RELEASECHARTS MARCH 1998 ----------------------------- PLACE GROUP POINTS RELEASES ---------------------------------------------------------- 1 ONSLAUGHT 5,0 2 2 LAXITY 2,6 2 3 CHROMANCE 2,2 1 4 LEGEND 0,2 1 SUCCESS AND TRC 0,2 1 5 PENTAGRAM -4,6 3 6 FAIRLIGHT -15,0 6 A quite long LIST this time... 15 RELEASES within' one month... really surprising!! I hope to see you again in the next EDITION of THE CREST MAGAZINE... . DODGER/THE CREST MAGAZINE ------------------------------
jtm - profile
__ ___________________________________ __ FIRST LEGAL PROFILE OF THE MONTH -- ------------------------------------- -- This month we give you a smalltalk with an old scener, which might not be known so well. But he surely was a great scener back in his time. And I even would call him one of the best logo-artists ever on this machine. His genious logo were puiublished in legendary demos like VISUALITY parts 1, 2, 3 and some other ones... Yes, I'm talking about... >>> JOE THE MADMAN of VISUAL REALITY/ANALOGUE <<< (C): Hi JTM! A pleasure to have you here in this short profiler... Please start the whole thing with some brief information about you! (J): Short and sweet; Real name..: XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXX Country....: Denmark Age........: Born the 4th January 1974 Profession: Junior Accountant Hobbies...: MC (Suzuki rules!), hunting, sporting, graphics E-mail....: JDA(at)POST3.TELE.DK (C): Yeah, short but very informative... :) Starting at the very beginning of your computer life, how and when did you get your beloved CBM64 and why? (J): Well, probably like all other sceners, back in the end of the 80's. My parents bought me this SUPER COMPUTER called the C128, which I only used to play on (so much for the educational use of the computer!). Soon I realized that it was cheaper getting cracks, and I began swapping with a lot of people. Back then the newspaper was full of adds from other swappers, the C64 was for sure popular. One thing lead to another, and soon I joined F. A. L. (Federation Against Lamers), here I began drawing, because I was tired of playing games. Later on F. A. L. changed name to IDEAL - and the rest is history. Over the years I hooked up with following groups: F. A. L. ..........: lamer IDEAL..............: lamer, swapper, graphic(?) CHEYENS............: lamer, swapper, graphic DANIAX.............: lamer, swapper, graphic DOMINATORS DESIGN: graphic VISUAL REALITY...: graphic, co-leader and -establisher For more precise data, check out the VISUAL REALITY homepage at... HTTP//:HOME3.INET.TELE.DK/JDA (C): And who were the very first guys you got to know in the scene back then? (J): As a matter of fact, my first contact was a girl (MAX/FAL), and later on I joined her funky group. Back then the group-thing was more concentrated on having as much fun as possible, later on we changed our name to IDEAL and began releasing quite a few productions, but eventually the original F. A. L. guys lost interest. (C): Must have been extreme coincidence that your first contact was a girl! Strange! By the way, how did you get your handle? (J): Well, JOE sounded much better than Joergen, and friends of mine will know why I added THE MADMAN. (Especially RONIN/DUNEX!) (C): Haha... Tell us, did you ever have some kind of war in the scene? (J): Nope. I'm a friendly guy. On the other hand, I cut off all contact to PETE/X-FACTOR after he released the PLASMA DESIGN-slideshow, which had about 85% of my graphic in it. He hadn't informed me that he was going to use my graphic, and he didn't credit the original artist, but merely told who was in PLASMA DESIGN. In fact he released a lot of DOMINATORS DESIGN graphic, which was intended for a production me and MICK were working on. I cut off all contact to him after this incident. (C): Boah, I would have slapped that guy right in the face! ;) And which was the best party you ever attended? (J): That would have to be the CAMELOT party, which was so damn fun, because all my scene- friends were there. Anyhow, also THE PARTY 3 was fabulous, but unfortunately also my last party. I remember my first ones, those really sucked, because all I really did was copying games, LAME!! (C): What do you think of today's demo scene? Do you like it? Or do you more like the one from the 80's? (J): Of course I prefer the scene I was involved in; BONZAI, CREST, CAMELOT, DOMINATORS, IDEAL, BUDS. The scene is all about friendship and competing with your friends. A scene without friends is nothing. The scene I left was boring and without friends. Hopefully this phenomena has changed to the better. (C): Hmmm... It's still not that hyper-friendly, but of course there are a lot of friendly pals around... Anyway, what's your opinion about trackmos? (J): The most inovative thing that ever happened on the C64 - Trackloaders are infact not that complicated. Just enjoy the first REAL trackmos from VISUAL REALITY. Anyhow, the concept should not be followed 100% - varations is the keyword. No one wants to watch a 40 minutes long and tiresome demo. The effects should be presented swift and easily, not a boring display of f.e. 34 vector-objects!!! (C): Yup, I liked that style in the VISUALITY 2 and 3! So tell us please, who were your idols back then concerning painting on the CBM64? (J): The people who really made an impact on my drawing style was FOX, the CONTEX guys, GBF- DESIGN, MIRAGE, COMPYX, PAL and KNOX. Other people I've enjoyed watching their graphic has to be: ELECTRIC, CREEPER, HEIN DESIGN, GOTCHA, the CAMELOT guys and many many more... (C): They surely were great artists! So, why did you start painting anyway?!? Why didn't you become a composer or coder or so? (J): Faith, I guess. In F. A. L. we always needed graphic, so I decided to start drawing. Anyhow, at that time it was much easier to start learning painting rather than figure out how the complicated assembler and composing- programs worked. Besides I've always been very creative, so it felt natural for me to start drawing. (C): Do you think that the C64 is still able to compete with other computers like Amiga or mainly PC? (J): Honestly, I don't know, since I haven't seen anything lately, but still, when I quitted back in 1993-94. The quality was great, especially the graphic and music. The code was (unfortunately) more concentrated on copying Amiga/PC demos, which in reality was impossible. Anyhow, when I left the scene the east- europeen scenes quality was getting better and better. This day today they've probably improved much more. Hopefully the C64- emulators on the PC will soon be able to handle "hardware-scrolls", so I can see what has happened the last few years. By the way, it's great to see that almost every C64-demo is available on the PC. The C64 just won't die! (C): Yeah, you got the point, hehe! Now a little tricky one... What is ELITE in your eyes? Do you think there is still ELITE on the CBM64? (J): In my opinion ELITE is based on having a critical opinion about everything you do, and NOT releasing stuff you're not satisfied with. Quality is elite. Thinking you are the ONLY cool group is not my definition of ELITE, but merely lame. Sharing ideas is ELITE. Keeping a professional attitude to every scene member, even the lamers, we all hate to admit we once were! This is in my opinion ELITE. (C): Interesting point of view... Cool! And now let's continiue with your favourites... (J): Coder......: MIRAGE/IDEAL, MICK/VR, MADUPLEC/CREST Graphican.. : MIRAGE/ANALOGUE, ELECTRIC/ EXTEND, HEIN DESIGN, GOTCHA Composer... : METAL/ANALOGUE, REYN OUWEHAND, JEROEN TEL, DEEK, DRAX, JEFF Demo Group: CREST, STARION, CANELOT, BONZAI Demo......: TWO-YEARS CREST, The VR-collection (no kidding!) Tool........: AMICA-PAINT (IDEAL), FAST HACK'EM (1571-version), FLI PAINT (turbo and packer version by VR), BOARDPAINTER (VR) Magazine..... : No opinion... I done layout for quite a few, but still I didn't care that much for the contents. Food..: Everything I can do without burning it... Drink : The higher promile the better. :/ Girl..: My own, my sister and my mom. Music: AQUA, TONY BRAXTON, METALLICA. I love all kind of music. (C): By the way, what can we expect from ANALOGUE in the near future? (J): Nothing, I guess. We've done a few good rated demos, but we are still all too busy with our professional careers. Anyhow, ANALOGUE's memberlist has quite a few prominent C64- legends like: HEIN DESIGN, JEROEN TEL, DRAX, METAL, MIRAGE, FACET, THE DARF JUDGE, me and many more. Perhaps there will be a few more releases in the future, but I doubt it myself. (C): A pity! Would have been nice to see some more things from you... Anyway, how much time did you spent in making your logos usually? (J): It all depends on how concentrated and ignited I was, some days I could do a fabolous logo under 5 hours. Other times I could spend days getting the right appearance and effect into the logo. (C): And did you use any special technique when painting? (J): Actually no, I was very flexible and was more interested in learning and eventually mastering as many techniques as possible. But I've always been more concentrated on getting as many colours as possible into my logos, the shape of the letters was of less importance. (C): Aha... So, now over to some brainstorming... Tell us please, what comes straight into your mind when I say... (J): Graphics: AMICA-PAINT, lame transfer from PC to C64 Demos.....: Friendship and competition. Cracking. : Eh... Shame on you! (He!) Internet..: Meeting old friends. Trackmos: A great concept. Parties.: THE PARTY 2-4 Sex.....: WALT/BZ, the early CREST stories. (He!) Alcohol...: ROYAL BEER, BLACKBERRY and LEMON VODKA. Drugs.......: Get a life! Fucking hippies... (C): Hehe... Cool statement! Hey, do you have any special advise for CBM64 scene newcomers, who might want to become as good as you?!? (J): Practice and practice. I perhaps did 5-6 bad logos for every good one I made. And furthermore learn to combine and fade the colours... And another thing, stop doing the graphic on the PC and Amiga, and then transferring it to the C64 - that's not real C64-graphics!!! (C): Once again we reached the end of a profile... So, do you want to say something special now? (J): It wouldn't be fair for the readers to greet all my friends. If my old friends want to reach me they can reach me at: Email: JDA(at)POST3.TELE.DK or HTTP://HOME3.INET.TELE.DK/JDA And all you other guys - KEEP THE SCENE ALIVE!!! (C): Okay... Nice last words! Thank you very much for this interview! Cheers... _______________________ Held by:HARDSEQUENCER/DYTEC Held on:01. 10. 1997 ---------------------------------- _____________ _ (C) THE CREST1998 - ---------------------- -
dane - profile
__ ___________________________________ __ SECOND LEGAL PROFILE OF THE MONTH -- ------------------------------------- -- Here and now we are proud to give you a lovely portrait of a very nice and friendly guy. He surely is known to everyone of you... And he is a master in subjects on the 64... First he became very famous because of his graphics, now he also storms the charts together with his groupmate MITCH with great tunes and he surely will have also much success with his coding in the future, without any doubt! It is... >>> DANE of CREST <<< So, check this one and enjoy it as much as we did! (C): Hello DANE! I'm really glad you have some time for us for doing that interview... So, to start off tell us a little bit about your person in general, please! (D): My name is Stellan, and I'm 21 years old. I have been in the scene since 92 and code as well as compose and paint. Most people don't know that. What they also don't know is that I am writing a book in between my studies at the university, which I hope someday will release me, so I can torment teenagers with language, as I am studying to become a teacher in Swedish and English. I compute a lot on my spare time. I also read a lot and listen to a lot of music. Sometimes I even have time to paint and draw. Mostly in my notepad during boring lectures. (C): Hehe... I did the same in school back then! :) How did the whole experience called "CBM64" start for you?!? (D): Well, EVERYONE in Sweden has had a C64 at home sometimes in their life. Atleast most of my friends agree to that. It just happened so I stopped playing lousy games on it and started scening as TWOFLOWER/TRIAD lived really close to me and sort of pulled me into it. I got into making gfx, and that's what started it all... (C): And in which groups have you been in by now? (D): AKROYD - A very long time ago. TWILIGHT - A small group I formed with TWOFLOWER, TANGO, JASON, JK and RAVE. We released a demo and a GREAT mag called ARISE. It got us into another group, somewhat more wellknown. TRIAD - Two graphical collections, some pictures. Gfx for REFUGEE and some other productions. Then something happened and I decided it'd be more fun to start composing. I met MITCH at the TRIBUTE party in Gothenburg. Later I joined CREST, at the release of KRESTOLOGY. I guess the rest is history. (C): Yeah, it is... So, what can we expect from you and CREST in the near future? Any projects already in process? (D): Let me see. CROSSBOW is working on MEET CREST. I know he has a lot of funky stuff in it! I am working on my first demo ever - something bound to make graphical KRESTOLOGY look like a trailer? And I hear people want us to do another graphicdemo... (C): Of course we do, hehe! Also your demo sounds very promising. I guess everyone is looking forward to see that one released soon! But from your futureplans now back to the past... What demo or so that you made something for are you most proud of? (D): Code - Right now unreleased. Gfx - What I've done for REFUGEE. What I'm painting right now. Music - LISTEN +LEARN, GLORIA and BLACKOUT. The first and the second are pure pop. The third is so far the most complicated tune I've composed soundwise. (C): And now it's again time for some favourites... (D): Demo Group: BLACKMAIL - their music, their graphics, their design. Demo........: RED STORM/TRIAD - I think it means a lot for all us Swedes. Coder.........: CROSSBOW - I hated him before I joined CREST, because he always had a new graphical format (HDTV etc.) and I never had a converter or an editor for it. And it took me some time to figure it out technically too... Graphican.. : HEIN HOLT Composer... : JEROEN, DRAX and DANKO Game............: LAST NINJA. All of them. Cracker........ : KF Cracking Group: TRIAD Disk Magazine..: I liked the old SHOCK. Book...........: THE WHEEL OF TIMES series by ROBERT JORDAN. Most HEMINGWAYS. Movie............: BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, TITANIC Music..............: U2, CHEMICAL BROTHERS, MADONNA (C): Huh, another MADONNA-fan... Nice! And now over to some brainstorming... (D): PC......: FASTTRACKER Internet: Vidiot Sex.....: Yes! Alcohol....: Sex Parties....: Music Competitions Phreaking: SLEDGE/FLT Boards...: WAREZ AQUARIUM Trackmos.: REFLEX (C): Okay... So, there is very often discussed whether the C64 scene is dead or not... What do you think about it?!? Or how long do you think will is stay alive?!? (D): Til I scratch my JCH-editor by mistake, and MITCH join the BACKSTREET BOYS instead of CREST. (C): Haha... Good answer! :) By the way, good that you mentioned MITCH... How did it come that you and MITCH started your cooperation with composing great tunes? (D): We both entered the TRIBUTE93-musiccompo, and after the compo, we met and played all of our worktunes to eachother. He was coming back to C64 from Amiga and needed someone to teach him the JCH-editor again. I was just learning it... After a while we just started to add things here and there to eachother's work. And from there it just kept growing worse and worse. Now most of what we do seperately sound quite the same... (C): And how do you compose your songs?! Is it that one of you has an idea and starts composing and then later gives it to the other one... Or what?!? (D): Very good guess. Someone always starts with something. When we started, MITCH had most of the original ideas. I, on the other hand, was the "producer" of th crew. Heck, it still is my job to fix good instruments and fx. Nowadays, however, I would say I am the more productive of the two. But then again, MITCH is very active on the PC. (C): Quite interesting... Tell us please, what do you think of the new school in the scene nowadays? Do you more like the spirit of the former days? (D): Scening was always great fun. Yet somewhere along the way, it felt like everybody left, or quit, or just got lazy. TP7 was a real adrenaline-rush for me scenewise. As soon as I got home I started to work my a** off with the demo. As for the yesterday/today dilemma, I think what one should do is look into the future and try to make the best of it. I'm going to have more fun. It ain't over yet! (C): Yeah... exactly my opinion! And what thing about the CBM64 scene do you like most? (D): The demos. Pure art. There is something magical about watching a demo. I love it. (C): So now that we know what you love most we also want to know what you hate most! (D): The Elite/Lamer hysteria of the early 09's. It was quite boring. (C): Aha... And what do you as legal scener think of the cracking scene? (D): I have never bothered to understand it. If guys have fun with that, let them. (C): Some years back there was some kind of "scandal" about you and your graphics... If my memory serves me right, it was RRR/OXYRON blaming you for improving scanned pictures and stuff... Can you please recall this story and tell it from your point of view? (D): RRR noticed my very first picture was infact a colourised FLI-version of an old digitalised picture from some ancient slideshow. This "hard evidence" made him draw the conclusion all of my graphics were nothing but conversions. It all made me kind of sick of painting, since he had destroyed the fun of it all. Why bother pixeling everything from scratch and work my butt off when RRR would just scream SCAN! It wasn't fun anymore. My demo, however, will show I have changed my mind somewhat... :) (C): So that thing wasn't a good experience, eh?!? Btw, which was then the best experience you had in your C64 scene career? (D): Joining TRIAD and working with KING FISHER on REFUGEE. It made me look at all of this in a new way. And ofcourse getting some kind of recognition as a musician after almost quitting with graphics completely. (C): If joining TRIAD was such a great experience for you... Why did you leave them then for CREST? Because of MITCH or what?!? (D): When I was in TRIAD, I was the graphician of the group. I painted whatever the others wanted, and as far as personal achievements went, I released some graphical collections. But as I've stated before, I tired somewhat of pixeling and wanted to develop my composing skills (close to none) further. I wanted to be the musician of the group. The difficulty of changing my role, which was quite hard since everybody in TRIAD still saw me as the GFXmeister, and the opportunity of joining the group who had the winning line-up of musicians at the time led to my joining CREST. (C): Ah, that obviously explains why! So what's your opinion about the well-hyped Internet? Is the THE future for our C64? (D): Yes ofcourse. If someone just send me an X1541-cable! (C): Haha... And what importance did the or still does the CBM64 have in your life? (D): It has been pure fun and a way to express myself. (C): Ever had any trouble with any guys during your scene time so far?!? If yes, give us a name, please! (D): A guy called STATIC of GOTHIC DESIGNS. But that's old news. (C): So, something different now: If you had to go to a lonely island and you could take only three things with you... What would these three things be? (D): MADONNA A sketch pad and a lot of pencils My wordprocessor (C): Yeah, good choice, especially the first one... ; ) We are near the end now... Anything you want to say now?!? (D): Greetings to my friends and foes. And the CRESTolytes and TRIADers! And a shout to all the readers! (C): Okay... That's all! Thanx for being so nice and answering so patiently and long! Cheers... _______________________ Held by:HARDSEQUENCER/DYTEC Held on:04. 03. 1998 --------------------------------- _ ____________ _ (C) THE CREST 1998 - --------------------- -
world of bytes
__ ___________________________________ __ WORLD OF BYTES -- ----------------------------------- -- From now on we'll also inform you about the latest happenings in the demo-scene in a compact form. But of course we also keep the demo reviews. This time we can give you a closer look at the demo, which made the 2nd place at THE PARTY 7 in Denmark. It is: >>> ONE-DER by OXYRON <<< But now let's start with some infos and happenings... TRIAD surprised us with a new demo last month... REFUGEE is a trackmo with extreme good style... KING FISHER worked on that demo since 1993! Another new TRIAD demo we can expect from TAO soon... Also SHAPE and OFFENCE are said to be working on a new coop-demo, which should be out still this year! HCL/FAIRLIGHT finished his demo for about 90%... According to VODKA/FLT he only has to link the parts and make a directory layout... But it's still unclear whether this demo gets released under the FAIRLIGHT or under the BOOZE DESIGN label. FLASH INC. are still working on their long awaited 2nd demo after their re-union. According to MORPHEUS it will also be out later this year. So, that's all for this issue's demo-scene happenings. Let's go on with the demo review of... __ ___________________________________ __ >>> ONE-DER <<< -- --------------- A dentro by OXYRON. __ ___________________________________ __ Coding review by..: DANZIG/ALPHAFLIGHT 1970 Music review by...: KRISTIAN ROSTOEN/SHAPE/HITMEN Graphic review by: SHOK'RAY/MEGASTYLE PRODUCTIONS -- -------------------------------------------- -- So hey, it's my (DANZIG's) turn to create another Demoreview for THE CREST MAGAZINE! First of all, the demo is a ONEFILER again, like DAWNFALL was but I think this one is even more impressive. I mean a 202 BLOCKS-file (loadable WITHOUT any cartridge) featuring so many different effects really blows any mind. Okay, the demo is ready to be executed and I'm going to start reviewing the thing step by step RIGHT NOW! First up you can choose between a NOTE-FILE and the real DEMO (would have been to simple for John to include the Note seperate on the disk maybe his trust in swappers got corrupted over the years ;)). ABOUT THE CODING: -- ----------- -- THE NOTE: --------- Well, it looks fuckin' similar to an old Noter Graham coded years ago! A Multicolor-Hireslogo is displayed at the upper 3/5 of the screen and below is shown some text in 1x1- size, EXTENDED BACKGROUND COLOR MODE on. With EBCM he created some Rasters in different colors like it is with the flashes in all the old NOTE- WRITERS. By a fact I don't know the rasterroutine stops a half char too early giving the last textline no complete raster (!?!). Since such a screen looks quite boring he spread some sprites over the whole screen (upper/lower- and sideborder) with different greycolors and acceleration together processing a stardom from left to right. Resume: Right, the whole code is old stuff but I am simply addicted to sideborder-crap and since it still today is a 'uponaverage'-performance I give 60% for the code (I'm simply subjective). Yes, back to the real DEMO: ------- The whole thing starts up with a linear running introduction, a real UGLY looking 3-colors ONEDER- logo painted by Deekay/CREST is displayed (we sacked him for it at the party more than enough I guess) and after it's gone the viewer is happy about the black screen ;). Coming up then is a routine I totally adore: A 3-colored OXYRON-logo in 2x2 pixelresolution (double multicolorsize) performed by a colorcycler looking so bombastic realistic! I have seen this effect at the partty about 10 meters away on a monitor and really ment it to be an AMIGA-effect!!! A generated speedcode-routine makes it possible and it runs in one FRAME! Resume: The effect is so fucking cool and INNOVATIVE, it's no improvement of some old suck-routine or something, it really kicks butt. I give Graham 80% for this routine, SUBJECTIVE! After this killer he shows a REAL eye-torture, a plasmafield to keep viewers calm while decrunching. But it's a pain in the eye. I don't give a value for it. Up next is a fullscreen 4x4-flameroutine (again :( ), but this one looks quite nice. Nevertheless his a lot smaller one in a previous demo looked far better! I am not sure if he should call it a FAKE that he doubled the flame in the middle but he did! So it's a halfscreen-flame poked two times on the screen. Resume: Since I don't like 4x4-crap but it looks quite cool I rate 70%. A gouraud-shaded vector (filled of course ;)) is next and again a NEW effect as it is real-multicolor-reso- lution and not in 4x4! Another really impressive routine. Resume: 90%, really kewl! Well, many people saw rain or water-fx on Amiga and PC but again it's Graham who comes over with it on the 64 and it looks simply cool. This effect is 2x2- pixel aswell and he printed 3x4 char-matrixes on the screen, each matrix 8x8 chars wide. Resume: I give 78% for it, it is a real nice routine. After this again cool routine he comes up with a realtime-vectordot, plotting 272 pixels in 1 frame! It is fullscreen and even leaves the screenrange where the object is displayed. The duck is really funny, reminds me on Ernie and Bert. And what no one expected, there is even a scroller with rasterscrolling. Resume: Oxyron is famous for real fast plot-routines and this one fulfills the expectations. 85% Followed by this is an ancient vertical rasterbars- routine known from old Amiga-ECS-Chipset-times. I mean it is simple code but was never done in such a good looking way! Resume: 63% since it is also styled pretty well. If you think there can not be much more impressive in this 1-Filer (I just can't write it often enough) you are wrong. The end of this awesome demos is a Wolfenstein-clone in 4x4, interactive (no space needed in the whole demo so Graham maybe wants the public to waste joystick-resources instead), you can run around in the dungeon. The whole thing is 32x32 texture-walls big and guess what, pretty fast! If you think 3 different textures are too less remind the fact that this is 'just' a onefiler 8-D! And since in this part there is again a scroller, Graham even had some bytes of text wasting his small memory. Resume: 92% for this one, it is really cool, fast and a perfect final kickafter all this brilliant routines. Final resume: -------------- Boom, this is in my eyes one of the coolest New-Age- Demos of the last few years. Graham managed to code fast routines with using not much memory. Other people would have done this demo as a 1-Sider. This work is fucking amazing. All in all I give: > 80% (I left the NOTE out of the rating as he could have left it away!) DANZIG ------ ABOUT THE GRAPHICS: -- ------------- -- The show starts with a three colour ONEDER-logo... Nothing someone could be proud of! The characters shapes partly might have been done better... But I'm no really sure whether this logo was done by DEEKAY or not... . > 10% After a ugly-displayed OXYRON-logo with colorflash- moving DEEKAY brightens up our lifes with a really wildstyled logo especially painted for this part. Displayed is a face, which might be the one of HENRI GOURAND as it's said in the logo itself. A really phat KOALA-logo/pic! ...Gourgeous... > 76% After having rubbed my eyes bloody because of DEEKAY's cool Koala-logo the show continues with a vertical 3 colour OXY logo in Koala. It reminds me somehow on the style RRR/OXY is using usually. Coincidence? Hehe... But all in all a quite nice logo, which proves that sometimes three colours can be enough to create an excellent piece of logo. > 39% The next and also last logo mirrors some kind of graffiti styled logo... Again it features only three colours and is displayed vertically. The fill-in is quite simple, but because of only three colours this was the only way to go. > 45% Final resume: -------------------- DEEKAY proved that he isn't just only good with morecolour things but also knows how to paint things with only three colours and still give it a special tough. All graphics together in this demo deserve: > 43% SHOK'RAY -------- ABOUT THE MUSICS: - ------------- - It seems obvious FANTA has been listening to music from the eighties. From guys like M. Galway, J. Dunn, R. Hubbard etc. And as a result of this, the soundtrack in this demo sounds very inspired by these guys. The first two tunes include some neat chords and variations and not to mention the typical non-filter bass. Sounds very nice. No, nevermind that last comment. This is hell. I just made the biggest mistake of my life - I pressed space. Techno... boring. Just the usual fast bass with some sick notes and some sirene-sounding instrument. And even worse, it was the last part and it just totally ruined my impression of the demo. Did I mention techno doesn't suit the Sid at all? Shame on ya, Fanta! If they had just swapped the end-part music with the note-music, this complete soundtrack would have scored high. The note-music is just so Crazy Comet- like... neat! Just a shame it's so short. Final resume: ---------------- To conclude this review I'd give it up to 85% if it hadn't been the last part. That tune just destroys the whole feeling. Still, as most composers today seem to produce nothing but techno I'd like to congratulate Fanta for daring going the oposite way - back to the "good old days". I give this soundtrack > 65% , hoping OXYRON won't do the same technotic mistake next time. KRISTIAN ROSTOEN ----------------- Coding by GRAHAM.............: 80% Graphics by DEEKAY: 43% Musics by FANTA...: 65% ----------------------------------- Overall...........: 63% -----------------------------------
arcade hall
__ ___________________________________ __ ARCADE HALL -- ----------------------------------- -- Welcome for the first time to this chapter in THE CREST. Here I (SPACE-ROY) will give you closer information on the latest releases and happenings on the game market as well as some game reviews. This time I want to start with a test of "SKIDMARKS" by SAMAR PRODUCTIONS and "LEISURE SUIT LEO 2" by OUT OF ORDER SOFTWORKS. So, let's go... >>> SKIDMARKS <<< -- ---------------- -- All you nostalgics out there have probably tried the good old Codemasters' car and bmx simulators, where you look on the tracks from the sky and try to get around the course before your oponent. And it was great fun, wasn't it?!? Now SAMAR PRODUCTIONS have used the same idea as Codemasters successfully did... The game starts with a menu, where you can choose between 9 tracks, 6 cars, car speed, number of laps, 1 or 2 players, computer or human oponent, and edit your own favourite color to the cars. When you proceed you see the course from the sky, and two cars on the start line. All you have to do now is to burn rubber and get to the finish line before your oponent. Sounds easy and cool? Well, don't expect too much, because there where some major disappointments and a silly bug! The bug doesn't infect the game in any visual or aural ways, but if you try to drive around the finish line, instead of driving around the course, you will see that you have passed one lap for each time crossing it, no matter if you have been on the other parts of the course or not! The biggest setback with this game was when I crossed the finishline for the first time, expecting to get into the next level and the game stopped! GAME OVER! Game over after driving a couple of rounds and beating the crap out of my oponent?? I wanted more, but all I got was back to the main menu! Also what gives this game lower score was the background. The first track has an okay environment, not so detailed, but atleast it looks like a car-track. But on some of the backdrops on other levels the graohician had put in starfields around the whole screen or just colorful patterns you usually find in logos on demos from early 1990! I also have to mention that I didn't get comfortable with the controlling. It felt like I was driving around drunk! During testing this game I constantly felt the "demo designer" atmosphere over the game. I guess some of it had to do with the background graphics, but also because of the lack of lastability. After driving a couple of courses all I really wanted was to press space to continue... PRESENTATION: 39% ------------------- A FLI-pic of a "pick-up" with the game title on the top. The music sounds very ordinary, and the whole presentation gives you a sort of "demo-feeling" that lasts through the game. Nothing special! GRAPHICS: 40% -------------- The sprites and the opening picture are good, but the background graphic has few details. Some backgrounds don't even look like backgrounds, but more like patternfillings in old demos! MUSIC: 55% ----------- The music sounds good, and the techno in-game tune would fit this kind of game. LASTABILITY: 25% ----------------- The game ends to soon, after passing the finish line it's game over, no matter if you won or lost! Also irritating "drunk-driving" controls! OVERALL: 35% -------------- A poor car game of its type, only recomended to persons looking for a two player competition game. >>> LEISURE SUIT LEO 2 - English version <<< -- -------------------------------------------- -- A multiload graphic adventure game on 2 disksides. Tested version was cracked by LAXITY. A-HA!!! The Commodore 64 finally got it's own Larry Laffer: Leo Feuerstein! And just as the loser from PC and Amiga, Leo has the same problems: Used and trashed by his ex-wife, struggeling around to find the way to paradize and new women! The story looks rather similar to the Sierra On-Line games on othe formats, and it isn't hard to see where Volker Rust got inspiration from. But to all you out there, who never played these old games on PC, this game must be a real riot! To be an adventure game, this game is very simple. There are no dead ends, and the text is filled up with hints all the way. If you have tried the PC games you are maybe used to write "look at..." on every object you can see drawn on the picture, but in this game you don't write a single word. Just click around in the menu and the objects displayed in the screen are listed infront of you. Also you don't write "walk north" etc. to go around, you simply click on the menu to go the wanted direction... I am very pleased to see that some game producers put so much time and effort into game making as Volker Rust has done with this adventure game. The game was made using a special "adventure-engine", so hopefully we will see more from this guy in the same engine. PRESENTATION: 61% ------------------- A picture of a sunset, with Leo drinking champagne while giving you some test questions to find out if you are old enough to play this game. Some questions are impossible for people outside Germany, but funny anyway. GRAPHICS: 40% -------------- The graphic is very simple, but it works and illustrates the environment! SOUND: 65% ----------- There are many "smooth" tunes, all sounding good and giving atmosphere to the game. LASTABILITY: 65% ----------------- An easy adventure game for the adventure beginner, try everything on everything and even the difficult puzzles can be solved. But the game is big, and will take more than 10 minutes to play through!!! OVERALL: 63% ------------- Maybe too easy for the experienced adventurer, but worth playing! That's all for this time... Questions, information or anything concerning the game scene? E-mail to: ROTTEROY(at)HOTMAIL.COM !!! ----------------------- And remember: A game worth playing is a game worth buying! Support the Commodore 64! SPACE-ROY/MEGASTYLE ---------------------- _ _____________ (C) THE CREST 1998 - --------------- -
