Shuze'n'socks

Back from the X96, the shoe man returns.

This is only going to be short chapter, as I am still
stuck with a few more bits and bobs to write for this
issue, and am so far 1 day over the deadline for the
text. I had intended to write all my text for this
issue actually at the X96, but I lent my only copy of
the editor to Kingfisher/Triad, so couldn't get
anything written.

Well, that's not strictly true, as I borrowed Cupid's
editor, and started doing interviews, but I was using
Angeldust's monster of a C64, and he turned it off
when I left the seat, and goodbye interviews.....

I have a whole new perspective on the scene now,
one that I think I should share with you all.

While at the X96, I chatted with a guy from the
scene, who is definitely a member of what is called
the elite. He is known for great proffesionalism and
competitism, but when I met him, it must be said that
he turned out to be a truly great guy. One thing we
spoke about was the scene, and what a sham it is.
Well, this is my interpretation of our conversation,
anyway.

We came to general conclusion that the scene does
not matter. As an example, two of the guys at the
party are what could be described as bitter enemies,
having fought a lot for a couple of years in the
scene. However, when they finally met each other,
they almost immediately were chatting and laughing
together.

The opposite happened to many guys, where they had
thought they were great friends with people, yet
as soon as they met, it turned icy.

So what does the scene stand for, then?

Fakes.

We are all fakes in this scene. No-one is who they
claim to be. We ALL claim to be womanisers, having to
beat off Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford with a
stick every night. We all give forward this image of
being elite, and where does it get us? Nowhere.

It seems odd that only a few days after a massive
scene event, where I met a lot of guys, with whom I
got on really well, that I should be writing a text
like this.

I guess it all goes back to the fact that I will be
quitting the scene maybe 2 weeks after Skyhigh 21
comes out. Well, maybe not quitting, but definitely
getting rid of 90% of my contacts, maybe stopping
this editors job for an issue or two, and generally
disappearing.

Yeah, many of my contacts will say "ha! bullshit" to
me, as I have been on the verge of quitting the
scene since before Christmas, but now I have no
choice.

My A-level exams are in 6 weeks time, and if I do not
pass them, I cannot go to university. As I write this
text on the 11th of March, this will be the last day
I will turn my C64 except when I get mail until maybe
June or July.

I have neither the time, the money, or the desire to
carry on megaswapping. Over the past month or so,
I was not sending out, and it was a luxury to have
some money again. My job only earns me about
thirty pounds per week, and I would find myself
spending maybe fifteen pounds on stamps, five
pounds on envelopes, and every few months another
forty pounds on the phonebill. It has to stop, and
here it does.

An official note will be passed around when this
mag is released, and I will probably send to all of
my 120 contacts (roughly 90 are very active, and
the rest send once every month or two).

I guess we all get to a point where we have more in
life to do than the scene. This is my point.

This is not really a proper Shuze And Socks chapter,
but I don't really feel like Shuze any more.
