;""""""""""""""; # N.Z. SECTION # ;""""""""""""""; review RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS by ROGUE N.Z. NEWS hello fans... heres your favorite kiwi bloke again with this issue's N.Z. SECTION for your pleasure and enjoyment... as most of my contacts already know i have been blabbering on about going to an ultimate concert by THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. in my notes for a few weeks, so now that its been, i thought i would use this column to do a review of it for yerz all.... so here we go..... me my bruvva and another mate clinbed into my bro's old honda accord around 6pm on teuesday night, and headed headed down to pick up another couple of mates down the other end of town. we got to the show building at 6.45 pm and joined in the chant 'OPEN THE FUCKING DOORS' with the rest of the decent sized crowd. we felt a bit out of place because we had'nt brought any drink with us and 3/4 of the crowd were already pissed. so one of my mates set about nicking 2 six packs of waikato (a fucking disqusting kiwi beer) which we downed and got slightly happier. anyway at about 7.20 they finally opened the doors and the crowd got in one at a time. they were searching everyone to start with but, but there was so much of a crush to get in, they just opened the doors and everyone poured in. there were two halls, the first with all the food and the CHILI PEPPERS merchandise (which none of us could efford), and the other had the huge stage with about 10 mema-speakers each side up the front, seats on all sides which filled up quickly, so we decided to stay in the crowd near the front. after about 1/2 hour delay,the first band came out, which was a pathetic rap group, which was'nt even advertised, by the name of 2 tribes. they did all the usual rap stuff with an unhealthy dosage of 'motherfuckers!' and 'my brothers' thrown in. the crowd was'nt exactly receptive to this group. one of the group yelled out,'lets here you say FUCK THE POLITCIANS (a most original title?) and the crowd replied 'FUCK OFF' next up was HEAD LIKE A HOLE, who literally stole the show. they thundered through their set, and the hometown crowd was more than keen to give support. they gave the set a bit of humour, with their trademarks of the microphone inside a rubber chicken, and their lead guitarist (fucked if i can remember his name) playing in his birthday suit, and added to this with the singer coming out dressed with a pink bath robe and with realistic breasts. songs like, life's a joke, afro surprise, miserygutz and spitbag went down a treat. an awesome extended version of penut shone out as the highlight. closely followed by 12. an excellent set, made all the more remarkable by the fact that tall (bass) was playing with cracked ribs and almost did'nt make it on stage. by now it was fucking hot in the middle of the crowd, so some of us went back to fill some of the seats on the stands near the back. this turned out to be a great sport because of the fantastic view of the stage. the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS had come promising rock for this town, and for a little while it looked like it would be a show to remember. the mighty give it away crashed open the show, and everthing looked set for a big night. but as the show progressed, things got a little worrying and the crowds attention started wandering. backwoods and bulletproof thudded along until a powerful SUCK MY KISS brought the eyes back front stage. but nobody just meandered along, and if you had to ask and my lovely man didn't capture hearts or minds. fleas (bass) lived lived up to his nickname, leaping all over the place, and drummer chad smith and new guitarist arik marshall showed themselves to be great musicians. but on a few too many songs they and singer anthony kiebes didn't seem to mesh. they tried are mut the 'magik' just did'nt seen to be there. maybe the new line-up still needs to settle down. but the potential is there, and when the CHILLIS got it together, they rocked in rare good fashion. and electric stonecold was followed by a stunning blood sugar sex magik and higher ground. a glitter ball used during sex magik achieved a near impossible feat, and made the show and sports centre look semi-attractive. a very short set, an hour and 15 minutes was followed by a one song encore. top marks for the helmets though - each pepper had a 3 foot gas flame on top of their head. when the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS fired, they were fucking briliant, the hit under the bridge especially so. but they fired a few too many blanks. that and the short set meant that the biggest show of the year ended up being some-what of a dissapointment. not an especially bad concert, by comparison to others i've seen, but it could have been a lot better. rating out of 10 *'s: * * * * * * well thats it from me this time. next month i'll have something to do with the scene to bore you with, but for now it's toodle pip from THE ROGUE/TSR """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" ;""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""; # fire button to return to main menu # ;"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""";
