--------------------------------------- * Guest editor: Jack Daniels * --------------------------------------- >> Remembering << What is it, i sometimes wonder, that made the C64 scene so special in contrast to other scenes. And then again, what happened to it, that the good old flair is gone nowadays? Why do old 'legends' quit the scene and move towards other targest? A lot of questions, but theanswer is easy, or seems to be easy to me. The Commodore 64 was not the first home-computer, but it was a major development concerning the quality in comparisson to the VIC 20, Texas instruments The C64 turned out to be the most sold home-computer worldwide. When we started in the scene, we were young, were mainly going to school and had lots of spare-time to to spend on the C64. I remember the times when 3DK and me have been mail trading with more than 200 contacts, plus we edited Corruption, called the boards and did some other (more or less) usefull stuff for the groups we have been in. Spending a whole weekend (from Friday afternoon till Sunday evening) infront of the monitor, was nothing special. Copying lika a maniac, writing articles throughout the night, no big deal. Today, having so much free-time is just a dream. We all got older, left school, start working, studying or whatever and cannot spend so much time for the computer. Another point is that in the beginning of the C64 scene there was no alternative. The Amiga scene was the only concurence, but everyone who had his root's in the C64 scene disliked the Amiga. So the C64 scene was the only thing to be active in. But then all of a sudden, people started getting PC's and consoles. The PC started being a must for everyone who wants to keep up to date. Slowly people realised that you can also use the consoles and PC for cracks, demos and magazines. The 64 scene got struck, people needed new challenge as almost everything on the 64 that could be done had been done. This and the lack of time made a lot of people and groups leave the Commodore 64. Once you start work or to study you have to realise that there are more important things in life than hanging infront of a computer like the 64. The latest development is the internet. Being on PC allows you to combine all things you want to do with the one computer. You can play games, write letters, do calculations, surf the internet and so on. The Commodore 64 is simply not advanced enough to be competetive with the PC. But comparing these two computers isjust like comparing a Ferrari with a Lada. So far, the article sounds like i do not like and do not have a C64 anymore, but thats wrong. Let me try to explain the fascination of the Commodore 64... The 64 is the machine where we all started on, it's also the computer we all grew up with. Everyone has some positive memories about being a part of the C64 scene. I do not know a single person, who regrets his time in the 64 scene. It's something that was a part of our youth and for some even a big part. I can only give you my point of view. I am not really involved into the C64 scene anylonger, as i simply do not have the time to. Plus i do not have a working C64 right now, but this will be changed soon, as i still collect C64 wares, mainly oldies. I have a few hundred disks with a lot of goodies from various years of the 64 scene. I am glad that i am still in contact with some guys from the 64 scene worldwide either by email or regular mail. Visiting computer parties like the Tribute is always fun meeting people from all over the world, having a beer, a chat, having fun as we all have a common basis. One thing is definate, i will always keep my C64 with all it's disks and memories. No matter how fastand big the PC's will be. The 64 was and still is a part of my life, nobody who has not been involved there can understand it. My brother always laughs his ass off when he sees me playing old games on the C64. But that's an experience all of you have made. This article wasn't meant to judge anything, it shall just give you a short glance of the developments in the C64 scene in the last years. It only reflects my personal opinion. If you have any comments or ideas, feel free to contact me under the following email address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Also if you are interested in some C64 oldie swapping. Thats it for today, enjoy the C64 as i do. Yours Sincerly Jack Daniels
