 Hello and welcome everyone to yet another issue of
 the one and only regularly released diskmagzine left
 in the world of our good old beloved machine CBM64.

   This time you have the pleasure to read the 15th
   issue or just call it THE SEPTEMBER EDITION 1998!

   This issue isn't that big as the last one, because
   this one was rushed once again. Only three weeks
went by since we put out issue number 14 and already
 here we go again with another issue. Issue 14 was of
     coursed released very late because of some
 personal problems of us main-editors and as we want
   to reach our usual releasedate again (around the
   middle of the month) we didn't have much time for
    this issue... But I hope you will enjoy it anyway...

   Now I must announce a really sad thing... Our good
    friend and also main-editor SHOK'RAY/MEGASTYLE
 PRODUCTIONS decided to leave the scene! He stopped
  his activities on the C64 to concentrate on his PC
                  only. Sad but true...
   So now we are only two main-editors left... DODGER
    and me. I guess now there will be many people who
     finally have another reason to call THE CREST a
  pure DYTEC magazine. And somehow they are right...
  The main-editors are now only in DYTEC, but for us
  that does NOT mean that we will release THE CREST
 under the DYTEC label... THE CREST was, is and always
   will be an INDEPENDENT production! We don't think
         that it's important from which group the
  main-editors are but that the most important thing
 is THE WAY WE WRITE! Being an independent magazine
  means writing objective and not fighting for your
  group's interests, and we think that we fulfil this!
   So, THE CREST will stay an independent magazine!

  SHOK'RAY's move shocked us somehow and pulled us
  back quite a lot. But we want to go on even without
 him, he who orginally had the idea for this magazine.
            We surely will miss you Marco!
   But we hope that all you readers out there won't
  suffer much from that happening... We will continue
         making THE CREST magazine, no doubt!

 Okay, after this sad news I can tell you that we this
           time again have a guest-editor!
 This issue LEMING/ONSLAUGHT/FATUM wrote for us an
  exclusive report from the NORTH PARTY 2 in Poland.
             Thank you very much LEMING!
    You can read his article in the chapter entitled
                PARTY EVENT COVERAGE.

 And I guess you know what comes now... Because you
        can find it in every edition of THE CREST.

As usually here you can read the latest about the
latest happenings in the scene since the release of
the last issue of THE CREST.
This time this chapter is again very small. One
reason for this is of course the low grade of
activity in the scene at the moment and another
reason is of course the short period of time that
went by since the last edition of our magazine.
Anyway, enough trashtalk for now... Here we go with
nothing but pure information...

First of all the polish swapper CACTUS joined the
german crew as his second group.
Later on the sad news got spread that CAT decided
to leave the scene and so the group as well.

  PHANTOM was kicked out of TEMPEST because of
  inactivity.

- From the 24th to the 25th of August took place the
  INTEL OUTSIDE 5 party in Warszawa/Poland.
  The results there were as follows...

                The "Overseas" Scene Report

Okay, folks... Try not to get too angry, but this is
going to be a really short chapter.  Why?  Because
several things happened this month... They were:

1. My email went down and I didn't realize it for a
   week and a half...

2. This Crest is released only a few weeks after the
   last one...

3. I spent a good ammount of my info-collecting time
   hanging out with Pegasus/RPG and a bottle of
   Danish vodka (thank you Ana!).
But even if that didn't happen, one thing stands
out that scares the hell out of me, and hopefully
everybody else who reads this chapter of the Crest
religiously...

    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENED THIS MONTH!

Well, okay, maybe some stuff did happen, but nothing
really noteworthy.  At least nothing that I have
been informed of, because if people tried to inform
me, I wasn't able to read it.

But I have a new email address all set up, dedicated
purely to The Crest information (and my own real
life column information), and this is where you
should send all news that you've heard this past
month, and all news that I have missed...

Well, I guess I should fill this out with something
other than the rambling commentary I've become
relatively known for, so let me dig through some
notes and papers here for a second...

THE NEWS

- The NTSC 4k Demo Competition deadline is over?
  Is that right?  Who wrote that?  I'm finding this
  just a bit upsetting because I haven't had a
  chance to finish my 4k demo entry.  I've been too
  busy keeping the computer in 128 mode, drinking
  and listening to Def Leppard...

- Kenneth Starr released his report on the alleged
  sexual relationship between Bill Clinton and Monica
  Lewinsky.  Millions flocked to the internet, where
  it was publicly posted (four times on my
  personalized Yahoo page).  The internet survived
  the strain.  I guess we can't always win...

There are no changes to the group list, so I'm going
to omit that this month.  It will be back with a
vengeance in October.

Well, that's it. I told you it was going to be a short
chapter.  But one can only fill out so much space
with rambling nonsense before he runs out of
relevant issues to go off about.

CREST got the crown back again. They jumped from 3
up to their "normal" place number 1!

So OXYRON went down once place to 2 while SMASH
climbed one position higher.

TRIAD surprise this month with a jump from 10 to 4!

Loser of the of the month are BYTERAPERS INC. who
finally had to leave the Top 10 together with LEPSI
DE, AGONY and OFFENCE.

The oldie labels got a massive amount of votes this

HITMEN had to go three places down while ONSLAUGHT

KATON is this month's surprise with climbing from 10

Massive changes here... MITCH+DANE are the number
one again. That's no big surprise... But the surprise
is that the last month's leader DRAX took a free
fall and left the charts! Unbelievable!

The young talent TAXIM got the second place after
being on the 4th last time.

Highest new entry is K. B. this time. He came right in
at the 4th position and our staff-member TRIDENT
managed to climb 5 places from 10 up to 5.

This time we got only a few filled votesheets... Too
few!
So please, everyone who wants objective and
representative charts in THE CREST better grab a
pen and write down your votes for our magazine!
For those of you who haven't checked it yet... We
give the points as follows: The 1st gets 20 points,
the 2nd 15 points, the 3rd 11 points, the 4th 8 points,
the 5th 6 points, the 6th 5 points, the 7th 4 points,
the 8th 3 points, the 9th 2 points and the 10th only 1
point. This pointsystem is somehow oriented on the
one from the Formula 1 and was invented to make you
think a bit more before voting... So do it!

Welcome back to my very own CHAPTER within' THE
CREST-MAGAZINE!

I was away for 2 months due to moving some
hundreds kilometres and starting a new job here at
the new place.
As I'm living in GERMANY it's not that easy getting a
new line etc... hehe!

Due to this fact I had to put 2 LISTS together, so we
have a bigger LIST this time... argh, that means more
work for me... ;)


The LIST of BOARDS I could take the RELEASES from is
very small again, but read more about this in THE
SPOTLIGHT news on the next pages...

The counted BOARDS for this LIST were:

DEADZONE (ONSLAUGHT WHQ).............+X-XXX-XXX-XXXX
THE BASS PLANET (XENON+(C) WHQ)......+X-XXX-XXX-XXXX


It seems to be a PROBLEM for some GROUPS to get
their RELEASES uploaded to the BOARDS... especially
GROUPS which claim to be able to call them for free.
However I hope some guys learn again how to upload
their stuff... ;)


Ok, before this preface ends I wanna tell you again,

          SPOTLIGHT NEWS JULY/AUGUST

The action on the BOARDS was on a very very slow
level, and to me it seemed that the scene was near
their END the last 2 months. But with the last days
of AUGUST the action picked up atleast a little bit,
and I hope that some GROUPS have still some stuff in
their pipelines... .

The 2 only  working BOARDS actually are THE BASS
PLANET and DEADZONE.
THE EVIL ISLAND is down, and till now I have no
information about the REASON...!
THE DUNGEON is still online, but for some weeks now,
it's running with a totally fucked MOD-copy and it
seems that Sysop KYLE has no time to get the BOARD
set up the right way... but as it's still up I believe
that THE DUNGEON will be back in some weeks... as
soon as the SYSOP finds the time to work on it!
I'll keep ya informed... hehe!


Yeah, that was all for this ISSUE... now let's have a
look at the FLOOD of RELEASES....





FAIRLIGHT (swe, den, hu...)                   -2,5 POINTS
----------------------------------------------------------

The strong guys in FAIRLIGHT started with the game
HUDDY which turned out to be the slightly modified
BLAZER which got released in 1987 by HOTLINE, and so
they got -5 POINTS for this one.
Later they returned with two small numbers named
THE REALM OF ZAROC (0,5 POINTS) and SPACE ZOOM
(0,5 POINTS). Both games are usually running perfect
PAL/NTSC, but as the cracker used a PAL-only INTRO
for these games, I gave -1 POINTS for every release!
Then they released the old-fashioned STARGOAL (1,3
POINTS), which was also running already PAL/NTSC!
The small MINESWEEPER PREVIEW (0,1 POINTS) from
FAIRYLIGHT was the next one within' their warez-
rush!
Their last release within' the 2 MONTHS was MONKEY
MATCH from LOADSTAR... due to beeing compiled 
BASIC, they got NO POINTS for this one!


FAN. 4 CRACKING GROUP (aus, swe, pol...)   2,1 POINTS
----------------------------------------------------------

They released the really nice BLOCKS, which got
fixed for them by LAXITY... and so they got half of
the points (2,1 POINTS)... .




LAXITY (ger, hol, lev...)                    2,1 POINTS
----------------------------------------------------------

With fixing the game BLOCKS for F4CG they gained
atleast some points this month (2,1 POINTS).


MOTIV 8 (dk...)                             0,0 POINTS
------------------------------------------------------------

Again they put out some COMPILED BASIC-games... this
time they were named GAP MAN, ESCAPE FROM TIAMATS
TOMB and VENTURE. They got NO POINTS for them, for
the fact they were COMPILED BASIC...!
Their last release this time was WAR. Due to the fact
that the game was coded in BASIC I gave NO POINTS
again. Interesting was the fact that the game was
flickering on PAL a bit due to a small ml-routine
beeing surely coded on an NTSC-64... ;)


ONSLAUGHT (aut, pol, dk...)                  2,7 POINTS
------------------------------------------------------------

The small but nice MILLENIUM ASSAULT got released
by them (2,7 POINTS). The game was already running
PAL/NTSC!


That's all... now over to the complete LIST...!

This time we bring you again an interview with a very
legendary pal from the demo scene.
He is a very famous composer and worked/works for
popular music labels MANIACS OF NOISE and VIBRANTS.
These days there is also a cracking group that has
the same name as he... He is the and only...

(C):  Hiho LAXITY! Nice that you have some time for
      me!
      To start, please tell me and the audience a bit
      about yourself in general!

(L):  My name is XXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX and I'm
      25 years old (birthday: 31st of January 1973).
      I live in the city of Aarhus in Denmark, where I
      study. I study to become a teacher or at least
      that's what the study is about. Alternatly the
      study is known for its varity of purposes and
      speaking the truth: I don't see myself as a
      teacher. Well, enough about that.
      Besides studying I run the Danish department
      of MANIACS OF NOISE together with a friend of
      mine. You probably know him... DRAX... Another
      Thomas... Anyway, we make music for modern
      computergames and such... Hobbies? Eh... Huh... I
      think you know what it is!

(C):  Yeah, it isn't hard to guess... ;)
      Starting at the very beginning... When did you
      get your very first CBM64?

(L):  Well... Let me check... That date I bought me C64
      is written on it... One second... 15th of April
      1985, that's when I bought my first and only
      C64. I entered the scene swithly after that. I
      think something like a year and a few months
      after I bought the 64. Prior to buying the 64, I
      had a Commodore VIC20 for a few years... Fun
      computer... Anyhow, I believe it was somewhen
      at the end of 86 that I joined WIZAX on the
      C64.

(C):  Aha... And which groups have you been in then?

(L):  I've been a member of the following groups:
      WIZAX 2004, ZETREX 2005, 2000 A.D., STARION,
      BONZAI, CREST (I believe!). Huh... That's it.

(C):  And who were your best friends in the scene?

(L):  I dunno... There's been a lot of them... The C64
      scene was one big good experience... I've been
      so lucky to earn a lot of respect from my
      fellow sceners and it has impressed me to find
      such a little amount of primadonnas in the
      scene... Although they do exist... (*sigh*)...

(C):  Okey dokey... Now over to something that
      obviously many people want to know from you:
      Can we expect a comeback from you on the
      CBM64? Or will you maybe release some old
      still-unreleased tunes to please the masses?

(L):  No... Veterans like myself don't have
      comebacks... :) No honestly... I'm not into C64
      music in the same way anymore and I don't
      think I'll fancy making music on it anymore!
      Sorry! Maybe I'll look through my work disks
      and see if there's any sid-mods I can spread
      though!

(C):  Yeah, would be nice to hear some old
      unreleased tunes from you soon.
      You did musics for many productions... Is there
      one you are especially proud of?

(L):  Hmm... What product I'm proudest of? That's a
      rather existential question, don't you think?
      Hmm... I think the right answer would be that I'm
      not particular proud of any projects, more
      likely the outcome... I'm proud of the outcome
      of the sid-mods I've composed that people
      remember and recognize as good sid-mods. I'm
      proud of that.
      I'm also very proud of having been able to
      contribute to such a grand thing as the many
      small constants in C64 scene, because the
      scene means so much to the most of us. You
      must understand that having been a part of
      the scene means a lot to me in my life. Not in
      the way that I'm kind of famous, but in the way
      that makes me feel that "I can really do
      something that is uniquely mine and that
      works". Don't you feel the same.

(C):  Yes, you are so right! Nice...
      So it seems you are/were very fond of the C64
      scene... But was there also something you did
      not like about it?

(L):  In my opinion there's nothing in particular I
      ever disliked about the C64 scene. The way I
      see it, the scene was (and is) a big organic
      forum, where fame and glory was (and is)
      something very fragile. Being a total DICK,
      won't get you anywhere but being totally
      "weak" on the other hand won't get you
      anyway either. Somehow the scene is a
      playground for creative minds, where
      competition is a part of every single day. When
      you do all your computer nerding, you always
      have the "scene" in the back of your head;
      the ordience. I've always found this totally
      awesome, and I've come to the point where I
      realize that the scene teaches the active
      scener a good lesson of selfawareness, and
      gives the scener a believe in the "magic" he
      can do on the computer (what ever type it
      might be!!!). This is what makes the scene GOOD,
      BAD and UGLY...  There's nothing of the one
      without the other(s)... :)

(C):  True words!
      Anyway, now please give us your favourites in
      the following categories...

(L):  Demogroup......: Ehh... CREST? (That's the only
                       one I know... They were good
                       when I was in the scene!)
         Crackinggroup: Yes... They were good! All of
                        them! Cracked really well...
         Demo...........: MIXER (Good demo, but old!)
         Coder..........: Uffe... What was your handle?
                          ICEMAN, nah! I was in STARION
                          with him, brilliant!
         Cracker........ : It's... HIM.
         Graphician: Don't ask me such question...
                     Definately not me!
          Composer.. : I always loved RUB HUBBARD... Sorry!
          Game.......: JEDI KNIGHT (PC game) and
                       CARMAGEDDON (PC game too!)
         Movie.........: GOOD WILL HUNTING
         Music.........: Well... That's too much to write!

(C):     Okay, thanks for these information.
         Do you still have a CBM64?

(L):     Yes... I still have my one and only 64... Although
         I think I've blown my powersupply!

(C):     Hmm... That's not so nice...
         And do you still have contact to some old
         friends from the scene?

(L):     Only to the guys in VIBRANTS, and a few people
         who've entered the gamecompanies I've worked
         with!

(C):     Aha... I see...
         By the way, how did you get your handle?

(L):     I looked it up in the dictionary, when WIZAX
         made 3545 demo... I needed a handle for the
         credits! So I thought LAXITY looked cool! It
         seems I'm not the onlt one thinking that, since
         there was a LAXITY on the Amiga later, and now
         a C64 group going by the same name...

(C):     Good that you mentioned the group... What do
         you of it that this crackinggroup took your
         name?

(L):     I don't care... I've recently spoken to one of
         the LAXITY-members, telling him exactly the
         same. I'm not active on the C64 anymore, so I
         guess it doesn't matter if there's a group with
         that same name as I.

(C):     Okay... Now let's get over to the music as topic.
         These days there is composed very much
         techno on the CBM64. What do you think of this
         and do you more prefer the old school style?

(L):     Yes, I prefer the old-school style, but then
         again... I'm old-school! :)
         Also I'm not very much into techno myself,
         which renders me intolerable towards techno!

(C):     In the favourites question you mentioned ROB
         HUBBARD as your favourite composer. Where
         there any other C64 musicians you liked a damn
         lot?

(L):     Yes... A lot! I guess you want names... So, here
         goes nothing!
         My alltime favourites: RUB HUBBARD, JOHANNES
                                BJERREGAARD, FRED GRAY,
                                MARTIN GALWAY
         Other cool guys........: JEROEN TEL, DRAX, JCH,
                                   METAL etc. etc.

(C):     I guess I got your direction... ;)
         Then I'd like to know which was your favourite
         sound editor and which ones you used!

(L):     In the beginning I used a machinecode monitor
         until I got really tired of that. Later I wrote
         my own editor, which was monitorish but a
         little easier to use, and with a few special
         utilities. And then finally I made a few tunes in
         JCH's editor, but that's only like 5 or 6 tunes...

(C):     Okay, enough about music now... : )
         What did you as composer think of the
         cracking scene? Did you find it useful?

(L):     The cracking scene... Always coursed me to
         have the newest games... I couldn't complain at
         all... Although, if all you guys would go buy the
         games, I would profit more from each project I
         work on... So go BUY games, not CRACK! :)

(C):     Hehe... I see you are bit parted in this topic...
         But let's do some brainstorming now to
         massage the brain a bit...

(L):     Boards...: INTEL!
         Phreaking: Where's my screwdriver!
         Internet...: A good thing... Indeed!
         PC.........: An even better thing... Huh! (Yes...)
         Parties....: Definately
         Sex....: Lots of it!
         Alcohol: Why does it cost money?

(C):     Hehe... Quite some funny answers except the
         one with the PC... :)
         These days the action in the C64 is really
         slow... So would you consider it near its death?

(L):     I guess I've never considered the C64 scene
         dead... And I think I never will... Well, until were
         dead all of us having been 64 sceners! Once a
         64 scener always a 64 scener somehow!

(C):     Yeah, nice attitude!
         I'm not sure how much you know about the "new
         school" in the scene... But do you like it? Or
         are you only down with the old spirit?

(L):     Well... I'm impressed with the new edges of the
         C64 scene, although I must admit I know far too
         little about the "new scene" to rate the
         product and other movements of it. I'm glad
         the C64 isn't forgotten, it derseves the "new
         scene"... Can't wait to see what the "new new
         scene" will be making on it! ;)

(C):     Hehe...
         Nowadays the C64 demos relate more and more
         to the PC... Even whole demos got copied to the
         good old machine... Do you sanction this?

(L):     That sounds really cool, but I haven't seen any
         any of them. But everybody speaks about how
         cool the 64 coders are nowadays, being able to
         do PC stuff on a 1 Mhz machine like the 64.
         Thumbs up fellas... You are doing it right!

(C):     Have you ever been in war or a big
         disagreement with another scener?

(L):     Yes, but they were few, and I don't even
         remember their names anymore!

(C):     Is there a special advise you'd like to give
         young composers who want to become as good
         and famous as you?

(L):     Well, if there was a set of guidelines I'd be
         glad to give them to you, but I'm afraid there
         is not... Except use your ears, not your mind
         when you compose music... Music is not made of
         theory, but theory is made of music!

(C):     Wow, kind of philosophic! :)
         Now that we are close to the end of this
         interview let's get over to some more
         unprofessional questions... Hehe...
         What does your dreamgirl look like?

(L):     Like my girlfriend! She's really something...

(C):     Nice for you... And which three things would
         you take to a lonely island?

(L):     Easy... My girlfriend, our dog (Picasso!) and my
         sound equipment... (Comes in more than one
         part, but I would put it into a container... Does
         that count?)

(C):     Hehe... Good answer!
         So, I can tell you: You are done with all the

This time we can bring you once again an interview
with a famous guy from the cracking scene.
He is British and was once a member of groups like
LASER, SCS+TRC and AVANTGARDE. In 1994 he quitted
the scene because he went to the States to study
there. But still he is well-known in our scene.
Of course I am talking about no one else but...

(C):  Feel welcome STEVE! I am very pleased to have
      you here in this interview.
      Anyway, let's start now with the first
      question, which asks for some general
      information about you, of course!

(S):  My real name is XXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXXXX, I'm 33
      and a licenced clinical psychologist and
      psychotherapist. My hobbies are emulation on
      the PC and philosophical/social psychology. I
      also teach social psychology at a large
      university and occasionally at local colleges.

(C):  Wow, a psychotherapist! :)
      Well, let's get over to the computer as the
      topic now... When did you get your very first
      CBM64?

(S):  I was about 18 and working as a trainee chef!
      It was 1983/1984 I guess... It cost me 300
      Pounds which was ahell of a lot of money at
      the time (about 550 US Dollars).

(C):  And how did you get into the scene then?

(S):  I first got to know of the warez "scene"
      through swapping games on tape (remember the
      arrow L tape loaders?) with two lads who lived
      in Yorkshire, North England (TOM +QUILL)...
      My first "crack" was to transfer some games
      from early Novaloads to this tape loader
      (DAMBUSTERS and SPY HUNTER spring to mind)...

(C):  Aha, I see... Well, tell us now please a little bit
      about your scene career, for example the
      groups that you were in!

(S):  I started out in LASER with TIM and another
      STEVE (Both of who I lost touch with! Contact
      me damn it!)... When IRONFIST (ELECTRIC BOYZ
      etc.) later joined we grouped with HENDY and
      XENVEN (Don't remember what group they were
      in) and became XENITH, which sson changed to
      ZENITH...
      I quit through personal problems in summer
      1989 and spent a few years trying to sort
      myself out... Unfortunately being a warez
      freak had rather strewed me up... So I went
      back to college and university... Eventually I
      returned for a brief period as LASER, possibly
      the first of the oldies' groups along with the
      AIRWOLF TEAM... I also joined SCS+TRC and with
      originals from GREMLIN I put out a few first
      releases before switching to AVANTGARDE...
      Some months later I quit because I had to go
      back to studying, circa 1994... I then lived in
      America for a while studying and came back to
      England to work...

(C):  And who were the very first guys you got to
      know in the scene?

(S):  True sceners? I suppose the DOUGHNUT
      CRACKING SERVICE guys, mainly ANDY but also
      NIK of IKARI (He lived close by.) and the guys
      from SIGMA who lived in London...

(C):  Okay... Well, you were quite in a bunch of
      groups in your time... How did it come that you
      went from group to group?

(S):  No particular reason. It just happened that
      way, right choice at the right time...

(C):  Can you still call a working C64 your property?

(S):  Unfortunately no, but I'm open to donations. ;      )

(C):  Hehe... So are you active on any other platform
      like PC or Amiga then?

(S):  I've cracked stacks of PC games and still do
      on occasion but I'm not in a group, I just do it
      for me and my friends...

(C):  That's nice... 
      Do you still have contact to old C64 scene
      friends?

(S):  Some. I still speak to DERBYSHIRE RAM on
      occasion and keep in touch by E-mail with some
      others, mainly SCS+TRC members...

(C):  Which cracker did you respect a lot and would
      you maybe call your idol?

(S):  I don't know about an idol, but COUNT ZERO was
      /is pretty cool as well as PUDWERX/ATC/AVT
      etc... Andreas was cool because he knew a
      stack of stuff about all sorts of things...
      PUDWERX was good because he could fix PAL-
      stuff properly unlike most Americans... And of
      course there is BURGLAR, who is just basically
      good at what he does...

(C):  Aha... Well, what do you think about the famous
      "fight" for first-releases?

(S):  Pathetic in this day and age... What for? My ego
      doesn't need to be massaged that way... I don't
      see the point now, but back in the 1980's and
      early 1990's it was fun...

(C):  Yeah, thesedays the "fight" seems rather
      useless...
      Anyway, what do you think is better: Quickly
      released cracks or quality cracks?

(S):  Quality now, but in the past quick...

(C):  Okay... And which game was your favourite on
      the CBM64?

(S):  ULTIMA IV... On every platform because of its
      depth and longevity...

(C):  And which game would you say was the hardest
      to crack? And how long did it take you to
      get it cracked?

(S):  I struggled like hell with THE PAWN for the new
      LASER in about 1993, it must have taken me a
      couple of weeks on and off...

(C):  Phew, seems this really was a hard one!
      And what do you think about cracks with lots
      of trainers? Do you find it useful to do for
      example +15 trained versions of games?

(S):  Sure, but what isn't useful is +h hiscore
      savers which suck...

(C):  Aha... Because of of the low amount of new
      games some oldie-labels like REMEMBER or
      NOSTALGIA were built up. They release only
      quality versions of classic C64 games. What do
      you think of this idea?

(S):  Bloody good idea, but they copied it from me...
      Hahahahahaha!

(C):  Yes, indeed!
      By the way, would you say that the CBM64
      scene is finally near its death?

(S):  Dead? I guess it soon will be... With new games
      gone, will demos still be written? Nothing lasts
      forever, and the scene will probably die when
      all the Commodore hardware dies...

(C):  Now let's get over to some brainstorming...
      Just answer as short as possible when I say:

(S):  NTSC-Fixing...: Something we don't need
                      anymore, as PCs don't have
                      this problem...
         Amiga........: Fun, but I was never that
                        into it, although the games
                        were cool.
         Internet.......: Excellent idea, just wish it
                          was faster. :(
         God..............: He's watching us...
         Princess Diana: Sigh, don't get me started on
                         this subject...
         Football........: Hate it...
         Sex.............: Pretty good, but love is better.
         Graffiti: Pretty dumb...
         Alcohol.: I've had plenty...
         Drugs...: For losers and wasters, I have never
                   taken any illegal drug including
                   canabis...

(C):     Hey, nice answers! I can agree on most of them!
         Cool...
         Have you had a disagreement with any other
         scener or group in your scene time?

(S):     Not serious disagreements, but there's been a
         lot of verbal abuse between me and IRONFIST,
         also the same with MEGASNAIL... Also there was
         the problem with FBR when I slept with
         CANDYMAN's wife...

(C):     Haha... Sounds funny!
         Well, over to something different: Computer
         parties! I bet you didn't attend that many as
         there didn't take place so many in the UK, eh?!?
         Anyway, which parties have you attended?

(S):     I've attended VENLO twice... In the UK I went to
         the COMMODORE SHOWS as well, usually in
         London...

(C):     And which one of them would you call the best?

(S):     Well, VENLO was okay...

(C):     Okay...
         Now over to a questions that is always very
         interesting with long-gone sceners: Why did
         you leave the CBM64 scene?

(S):     I had better things to do, if I hadn't left I
         wouldn't be in the position I am now... I wouldn't
         have a profession, a wife, a life? Who can say?

(C):     Yeah, I guess no one...
         Would you call the experiene C64 scene an
         important point in your life? Did it maybe give
         you something special?

(S):     In 1989 it made me realise that I had to quit, at
         least temporarily... Somehow, I'd got to think
         thatC64 warez was all life was about, and the
         rest of my life was falling apart around me... I
         rejoined the scene for a while 1993/1994, but
         it wasn't the same, nothing lasts forever at
         all...

(C):     Yeah...
         And this was the last real question of this
         interview. Would you like to greet some friends
         now?

(S):     Well, hi to everyone I've ever known in the
         scene!!! Especially to BURGLAR, CBA, HOK,
         NIGHTSHADE, THOMAS CANZIANI (Damn, I forgot
         his handle!), ANTITRACK, DERBYSHIRE RAM,
         GREMLIN, even IRONFIST...

This month marks the first month that an NTSC
scener is being interviewed.  To start the series,
we bring you the man behind the interactive 3d world
of "Polygonamy," and the designer of the Tunesmith
Music Editor.  That's right... This month we bring
you the one and only...

[J]: Steven Judd               [C]: The Crest
[C]   First off, it's apparently tradition to start off
      the interview with a bit of background and
      personal information...

[J]    I was born in 1971 in California.  I grew up in
      the southwest, and am currently finishing up
      a PhD here in Chicago.  In 1984 I took on two
      paper routes and saved for four months to buy
      a 64+1541; the paper route financed all my
      computer stuff through high school.  I played
      lots of games, and was a pretty unsuccessful
      programmer, although in high school I used to
      write various programs on the Apple IIs and PCs
      to graph mathematical functions and things like
      that.  In 1989 I got an Amiga and loaned the 64
      to my sister.  Finally, in 1993, after I came out
      to Chicago, I got the longing for the 8-bit, and
      bought a 128D.  In the summer of 1994 I became
      very interested in 64 3d graphics and wrote my
      first successful assembly program, the old
      cube3d, and nowadays I use the 8-bit stuff more
      than anything else.

[C]    How, when and why did you first become
      involved with the C64 scene?

[J]    Well, when I started coding the 3d stuff, I
      started talking to guys like Repose and
      Firefoot.  Around the time of Polygonamy I
      started hanging out on IRC, and got to know
      Elwix and some other cool guys.  Really IRC is
      my contact with the scene, and I have met many
      interesting people over the years.

[C]    Why did you decide to work in demos rather
      than, say, cracking or fixing?

[J]    Well, my interest was in designing algorithms
      for drawing lines, which leads very naturally
      into demos.  I've done a little of everything
      really -- a few demos, a few utilities, and lately
      I've been doing some SuperCPU and NTSC fixing.
      I find them all interesting.

[C]    Who do you respect in the scene and why?

[J]    There are many people I respect.  Some for their
      coding ability, some for their vision, and some
      because they are just nice guys who like
      talking about interesting subjects.

[C]    Are there any projects that took a long time
      to complete?  Which project took you the
      longest?

[J]    Good heavens yes; almost all my projects take
      a long time, at least a month.  Cool World took
      all summer (about three months) of daily
      programming, and Tunesmith took around nine
      months of steady programming.

[C]    What project, that you have done, are you
      most proud of?

[J]    Tunesmith, my music composer.  I think it is
      very original, and was a huge undertaking --
      something like 16,000 lines of code.  It involved
      designing algorithms which I had absolutely zero
      experience with: text editors, a new language
      and a compiler, a player routine, a user
      interface, etc.  And in the end it worked quite
      well, and turned out to be pretty powerful.
      Most importantly, I learned a huge ammount of
      stuff in the process, and really grew and
      matured in my coding skills.

      This, by the way, is what addicts me to coding:
      spending a lot of time thinking up new ideas
      and different possibilities, planning and
      designing an algorithm, and after coding it all
      up... well, when it is working, really working,
      just like it was planned, it is utterly thrilling.
      And the feeling of having grown the brain out
      a little, and knowing that you're a little
      smarter, makes you feel very powerful and
      confident.

[C]    Do you use any special (possibly copyrighted)
      technique when working on a project?

[J]    Well, one thing I usually do is plan stuff out
      ahead of time, on paper, especially with the big
      programs.  I explore the different possibilities,
      and work out the complex algorithms ahead of
      time.  It weeds out the bad algorithms, so I know
      I've got a decent one.  It's much easier to code
      the thing up, since I can look at the paper to
      keep the big picture in mind.  And most
      importantly, I know exactly how the code should
      behave, which makes debugging quite a lot
      easier.  I have several big thick notebooks
      containing different algorithm ideas, pictures,
      equations, debugging notes, and so on; a
      medium-sized program like Cool World usually
      uses around 100 pages.

      The other thing I do is make sure I understand
      why something doesn't work, as opposed to
      trying stuff until it works -- in fact, while
      debugging, I usually try to deduce the bug,
      rather than step through the code with the AR.
      It requires a little more patience and mental
      effort, but pays off handsomely in the long run.

[C]    It seems like the big thing in demos now is the
      track-demo, or "trackmo," concept.  What do
      you think of this form of demo?  Are these
      things the wave of the future, or do you prefer
      the old-school style "hit space" demos?

[J]    Well, they've certainly been around a while.
      Sometimes it is a drag having to wait through
      some boring routine, but there are also some
      very nice trackmos.  My main objection is that
      they never work right with NTSC, not to mention
      a lot of emulators, and fixing them can be a
      real bitch.  Otherwise I have to watch them on
      my PAL 64, without color.
[C]    Do you have any advice for newcomers to
      the scene?

[J]    Yes, I have two pieces of advice.  The first is
      to stick with it.  There are an awful lot of
      guys that take the attitude that if they don't
      understand something the first time around,
      or the code doesn't work on the first try, then
      it must be really difficult, and they give up.
      You can't grow as a coder with that kind of
      attitude.  The second piece of advice is to do
      what you're interested in, and don't worry too
      much about what other guys think about it.
      You won't get much satisfaction coding things
      just because some other guy is interested in
      it; the main person you are competeing with is
      yourself.

[C]    What, in your opinion, makes the C64 scene
      special?  Why does it stand above the PC, Mac
      and Amiga scenes?  Is there anything you
      dislike about the scene nowadays?

[J]    The nice thing about the 64 community is that
      people are here because they want to be here,
      because they have a passion for the machine
      and enjoy working with it.  Although there are
      still a few guys who want to be treated as
      royalty because they've written some 64 code,
      there is quite a lot less pretense -- and often

      because people don't have to worry so much
      about what the world will think.

[C]    Speaking of "royalty," do you think that
      "eliteness" has any relevance in today's scene?
      Who do you think deserves to be called elite?

[J]    I think "Elite" is a holdover from high school
      days, when people were more obsessed with
      being "better" than someone else, and thought
      that writing 64 demos was a really worldly
      accomplishment.  But most of us have grown up
      a little, and are smart enough to realize that
      if you're lying on your deathbed and your
      main contribution to the world was a few 64
      demos, then you pretty much wasted your life!
      While I believe that writing 64 code gives
      great personal satisfaction, it seems a little
      silly to derive identity from it.

[C]    A lot of attention has recently been paid to
      the internet.  Do you think it's the future of
      the scene?  Can and will the internet ever
      replace the boards of yesteryear?

[J]    Near as I can figure, it already has.  There are
      a thousand web pages for every ten boards,
      and IRC has provided a good way for guys to
      communicate with each other.

[C]    Do you have any future projects looming around
      the corner that we can look forward to?

[J]    I've got a great big to-do list and no girlfriend,
      so there's a good chance for me to get around
      to it.  Projects include a game, a new 64
      programming language, a fast floating point
      math library, some articles, and a whole lot
      more.  The great thing about the 64 is that
      there's always something new to try out.

[C]    I have this favourites list, but I'm not going to
      retype it... so if you'd like to just give your
      favourite whatever....

[J]    I have a lot of favorites, including most of the
      usuals.  I will give a plug for Driven and
      C=Hacking, and I believe "Altered States" is the
      finest 64 demo ever written, "incomplete"as it
      is.  For coding I use Merlin 128, an FD-2000 and
      an Action Replay.  And pucrunch sure is nice
      for crunching, so those are some favorites.

[C]    Well, we've about reached the end, so if you'd
      like to say "howdy" to anyone in the scene, or
      if you have any closing comments, here's the
      place to put 'em...

[J]    Well, greetings to all the people I have met and
      argued with over the years :).  Actually, I do
      have something to say.  Some people think the
      scene is dying, particularly the NTSC scene.  I
      think this is nonsense.  As far as I can tell, the
      foundations are still very strong: first, as I
      said before, the people are there because they
      enjoy it.  There are a lot of people not coding
      right now, but they are still passionate about
      the computer.  Second, there is a steady influx
      of new people, for example The Fatman, Eyeth,
      Fuzz, who recruited a whole flock of guys at
      his high school... heck, I'm even pretty new.  And
      most importantly, there's still the computer:
      The 64 is simply a magic computer, which has the
      same attractions it always had, and that's what
      brings new guys in and keeps the old guys
      interested.  When that changes, then maybe the
      scene will wither away, but not before -- check
      back in five years and see if I'm right or not :).

Hey yo, here we go... This time again with some
reviews of competition graphics.
This month I bring you a closer look at the graphics
from the NORTH PARTY 2, which took place in
Bartoszyce/Poland from the 30th of July to the 1st
of August 1998.
The graphic competition results there were this way:

But now let's start with a review of each of the
competing pictures...


"FACE TO FACE" by VALSARY of SAMAR/LEPSI DE

VALSARY and his artworks were hyped very much the
last few months... And this Interlace-FLI fullscreener
justifies this massive hype!
It shows a zombie or a mummy or whatever with
other ones of his kind behind him. It is nearly the
same motif as KATON's compo graphic at the SCENERY
'98, but this is a close up.
It is very colourful and the flickering is really low!
Technically seen this picture is really 100% perfect.
Also the motif is quite nice.
In my opinion this is one of the best I-FLI pictures
since ages, no doubt!

"COMPOPIC" by QUESTOR of ALBION
- ---------------------------------------------- -
This piece was also done in the Interlace-FLI mode
covering the whole screen.
It consits of many small pictures which feature
motifs like the face of an old guy, a skull, a
dragon's head, two other men's faces, eyes that
look very "LAST NINJA" like and naked women.
This picture is too overloaded, as fas as I'm
concerned. Also the motifs theirselves aren't very
nice. On the technical sector it is also only average.

"COMPOPIC" by KATON of LEPSI DE/ARISE

Again a fullscreener, but this time in the often
underrated Hires-mode!
This piccy shows a guy's face with a widely opened
mouth. His head gets surrounded by globes or
whatever this should be.
It is well pixeled. The fadings are also very nice, but
maybe he should have used some more of them.
The motif isn't that good, but overall the picture
is quite beautiful. It's always nice to see some great
Hires-gfx...

"THE COLLUMS OF CREATION" by J.                  F.K./DRACO/EXPECT

Again a picture in the I-FLI mode taking the whole
screen.
Here you can obviously see the collumns of creation,
but I only got that from the title, because not
knowing the name it would be a life-time achievement
to figure out what this should be... The background
shows the blue space with a spaceship in it.
The background is too boring, because the
colourfadings are rarely set, but not only there.
The whole piece flickers a damn lot.
All in all I can only say that this picture looks damn
strange and surely better shouldn't have been
released.

"FACE" by SEBALOZ of LEPSI DE
- ------------------------------------------ -
This time SEBALOZ gives us a Koala picture that
displays the profile of a face in front of a bright
light so that you can nearly see only the face's
shapes.
This piece is quite simple because half of the
screen is kept just black. The forms of the face
don't look very realistic, especially the nose and
the mouth.
I really expected something better from SEBALOZ...
The only good thing about this piece are the well
done colourfadings.

"COMPOPIC" by BISCHOP of SAMAR

And again Interlace-FLI. On this fullscreener you can
see a black girl's face. The girlie hold a syringe in
one of her hands.
The fadings are not so good as well as some
proportions. For example one finger of the hand is
really too small and long. Also the hair wasn't
painted that good. Then the background could have
been done a bit better and more interesting too.
The motif is okay and so are most of the shapes.

"MYSTERIOUS ENEMY" by KATON of LEPSI DE/ARISE
- ------------------------------------------- -
Guess what?!? Yes, another fullscreen I-FLI picture.
This one features KATON's typical style. Very
colourful, fantasy-like and consisting of some
smaller pcitures.
You can see a warrior with a sword, a woman, a
chinese(?) guy and the shapes of another guy's
face.
As usually with KATON the fadings and the choice of
colours are great.
But what bugs me a bit here are some smaller
proportions and form mistakes on two faces. Then
the piece is a bit too empty for me on the right side,
maybe he should have done some simple
colourfadings here just to fill the hole.

"NO COPY" by SEBALOZ of LEPSI DE
- ---------------------------- -
This picture by SEBALOZ was done in I-FLI and shows
a funny face that covers about half of the screen.
The face is not meant to look realistic.
The colourfadings are very good, we know this from
SEBALOZ.
The background is too simple because it is nothing
but grey.
Also the motif is not so nice. The guy might look
funny but only because of his ugliness! : )
The face itself is structured too simple and
features no hard forms or shadings so it surely
wasn't very hard to paint it.

That were not all pictures... The one from FENEK is
missing. I didn't manage to get a cpoy of it, even
though I asked quite a bunch of people. But this
picture was missing on every disk... Sorry! So I leave
this one out... Hope you can understand it.

So here we go with my personal rankings...

Summarizing I can say that the concurrence was of

This time we bring you a review of the coop-demo
VOID by COMA +RESOURCE which got the 3rd place at
THE PARTY 7. We know that this one isn't the latest
demo, of course, but due to the lack of good new
demos at the moment, we decided to give this demo a
chance.

But now, as usually in this chapter, let's start with
the latest happenings from the demo market and a
look out on upcomming projects...
The new demo by STINGER/SAMAR entitled DIGITAL
WORLD shocked the audience at the INTEL OUTSIDE 5
party in Poland. Of course this two-sided production
gained the first place in the competition there.
Besides this also TENGU showed some activity with
releasing the preview of their demo OUT OF CODE.

As you can see the demo scene is very slow at the
moment... But I hope that this will change with the
X98 in Holland taking place. And it seems everyone is
waiting for it...
According to ANONYM his group PADUA is planning to
release release a demo there.
Also the guys from W.O.W. are working on a demo
called HALF BAKED with parts by RAVEN and LAX. The
W.O. W. demo DOWN TO THE BONE was cancelled because
of organisation problems with the other coders
taking part in this project.
Surely there will be more demos released on the X98
than these but we only received information from
these groups... So, let's see what the X98 brings!

VOID is a cooperation demo made by people from COMA
and RESOURCE. It was released at THE PARTY 1997. The
code was made by EDHELLON (doom + 3d) and OSWALD
(the rest).

The demo starts with a black screen, and after a
few seconds you are urged to flip the disk and
press space.

A COMA Interlace-FLI logo by ZELDIN is shown. The
letterstyle is not very good, quite simple. Behind the
latters there is some kind of colour-splash while
the Hungarian flag is to be seen between the
letters. The colourfadings in this logo are good, but
the shapefadings weren't done well. All in all the
whole piece is a too boring...                   > 38%

Then a fullscreen I-FLI picture by TYRANT scrolls in
from the bottom. It displays a picture with a comic-
or manga-inspired guy (warrior?) at the top and a
nice RESOURCE logo at the bottom.
The shapes and the colourfadings are well done,
only the guy's left arm looks a bit strange. The
background is also okay and logo features a cool
letterstyle...                                 > 71%

Then after the PRESENTS text a VOID Interlace-FLI
fullscreen logo by TYRANT fades in. You can see a
hires-like (only held in grey) graffiti throw up VOID
on a wall. Behind the wall is a city-skyline visible.
The letterstyle is damn cool and really looks like
orginal graffiti. The only thing that bugs me with
this picture is that it was drawn in I-FLI. It also
would have been easily possible in Hires. So I can
give only...                                     > 66%

Then the credits for the demo are shown just below
a very nice looking animation of what apears to be a
spiral galaxy, or at least something like that, in
three colours. Each letter in the credits is moving in
its own way. Neat.

The music that is playing was done by ECLIPSE... And
what can I say about this tune?!? Well, ECLIPSE has
made some very nice instruments and also the
filters are quite good. This tune has a lot of
variation and a very good melody...              > 84%

Coming up is a plasma tunnel in 4X4 resolution
covering a large part of the screen. You could say
it's fullscreen (even though fullscreen on C64 really
ought to mean ESCOS.) :) It looks like a standard
tunnel with plasma on the walls. Though the tunnel is
not the fastest rendered ever, it rotates and moves
towards you in a very good looking way.

The next effect what they call a "whirlpool" and
that I have never seen before, and it does impress
me much. All of the screen is covered with something
that looks like a mixture of radial twister and a
cyber vector (without vectors), you know, when it
looks like you peep through a bathroom window. The
resolution is very high; I call it multicolour
resolution, and I think you know what I mean. It is
very fast and looks absoloutely great!

Then you can see another I-FLI picture by TYRANT.
This one takes only about half of the screen and
displays a smiling dragon(?) sitting on a stone.
The shapes were well painted. Also the colourfadings
hint to a good technique. But the background should
have been filled with somecolourfadings or whatever
but this way it looks to empty, because it is nothing
but black...                                     > 74%

From the bottom of the screen a "plasma bar"
appears in 4X4. The effect is hard to describe, but it
looks very nice when it twirls, twists and tech-techs
over the screen. Lots of colours and movements.
The plasma in generated at the bottom of the screen
and scroll upwards over the bar. (One could ask
oneself what one drinks at a plasma bar... But then,
what does people drink at raster bars? Probably
piss-yellow Budweiser... :) )

Next thing is what OSWALD calls a caleidoscope,
which is a rotozoomer without zoom (I guess it
should be called just a roto), which is being
mirrored in all four directions of the screen. The
pattern is the standard faded square. It does look
good, but I can't really understand why they didn't
make it zoom aswell. When you have your deltas
calculated (picked from the sine table), it's no big
deal to multiply them with a scalar to get the zoom.
It only has to be done once per rendered screen. But
I guess they thought this was better. They may be
right.

Then the music changes. It was also done by ECLIPSE.
This time we have a techno stylish music, at least in
the beginning. Again the filters and the instruments
are done very well. The melody is okay too. Again we
can hear a lot of variation in this tune. In my opinion
it is very important to have a lot of variation as
otherwise a music can't stay interesting very
long...                                          > 82%

A city skyline fades in. It was painted in the Koala
mode and doesn't look very good. The painter
somehow had some problems with shapefadings and
the brightness of colours as some pixels look too
big...                                         > 41%

Above this skyline there comes a bump scroll. I must
say that I can't even begin to understand what they
mean by that scroll text! They claim that this is the
first real time bump mapper ever on the C64! In the
last few years I have seen lots of bump mappers,
and none of them seemed to be animated or
precalculated in any way. In my demo O-TECH PEOPLE
I had a plasma bump mapper, which was very real
time, and there also have been bump tunnels, bump
vectors, bump water surfaces, bump everything... But
the bump scroll looks very neat and fast, and it
fades out in a very nice way with rasters coming up
from below it and covering it.

Another fullscreen I-FLI picture by TYRANT fades in
in a slow and blocky way. It shows the actor JEAN
RENO from the movie LEON-THE PROFI. He holds a gun
towards the spectator. The shapes were well done as
well as the colourfadings. The background is once
again too simple and is too bright what causes quite
some flickering...                              > 74%

What comes next is a plasma that covers a big
portion of the screen with colours. The pattern does
look a bit boring, though the usual circular thing,
you know. The effects is shown for quite a short
period of time, which I think is good, as you don't
have time to get bored.

In the meantime there is shown a small vertical Koala
logo on the right side. It read COMA RESOURCE and is
very simple. It features a chessboard as
background. The letters are empty, means black.
It looks okay, but is somehow too simple...   > 31%

What calls OSWALD a "double tunnel" is shown next.
It starts almost like the previous plasma tunnel, but
now there are two layers of colours moving and
rotating independent of each other. The bottom gray
layer shines through the top blue layer. This effect
is very nice and at least I have not seen this before.

Again the small right part of the screen is filled by
a graphic. This time you can only see some strange
colourfadings and swung lines mainly held in brown
and blue. I don't know what it should be, but
technically seen it is okay and fulfils its job as
"filler"...                                      > 40%

A clock counting down from 10 seconds appears and
when the countdown has been done, BOOM, a white
logo saying BOOM explodes on your screen. Each
character (8X8 pixels) flies away. Looks good and is
inventive I think.

Then a TURN DISK picture is shown. It is in Interlace-
FLI and displays a devil or zombie or whatever
embracing a girl. The motif is well-known and was
already often painted on the CBM64. This picture is
converted and is also indicated as a converted one
in the end-upscroller. So no rating for this one...

After turning the disk a nice small picture fades in
at the top of the screen. It takes about only a third
of the screen and was done in Koala. You can see two
b-boys sitting on the ground in front of a wall that
is full of graffiti tags. The fadings were well done,
and also especially the shapefadings are technically
100%! But the wall looks a bit too boring and
colourless. Maybe TYRANT should have used some
more colours than only grey...               > 68%

Below the picture there is what on the PC is called
DOOM-styled floor mapping. Here they call it just
floor map and it is a perspective mapped floor that
moves and rotates in 4X4 resolution. The pixels are
HUGE though, and they probably could have scaled it
down by a factor of two to make it look better.
Then the picture fades down again in a very good
fashion.

The music playing now was done by TAKI. It is a bit
funky styled. And also here the instruments are
quite okay. The melody is very good either. Too bad,
this music has not so much variation like the two
other ones before, but it doesn't bore me that fast
anyway...                                      > 77%

3D is always cool, and this next effect is just that.
Six rings or so fly around for a while on the screen,
in multicolour resolution. In the note EDHELLON
states that there are 160 verticies and 320 faces in
the objects. It is jagged, probably shown every
third or fourth frame, and an educated guess is that
this is animated. The objects are what some people
call "inconvex", which means that each object in
some angles covers its own surfaces. The objects
also cover each other and in order to do this in real
time on the C64 you have to have a VERY fast
polygon fill routine, since nearly half of the
surfaces have to be drawn every screen, and the
objects are mnany. The best way to implement this
should be the painters algorithm, and I think this
would be far too slow in this case, where there are
quite a few surfaces. But I might be wrong! Who
knows!

Then a FLI picture by TYRANT is shown. It covers
about two third of the screen and displays
something like an alien with a wide opened mouth. It
is mostly held in blue. The fadings are okay, but the
painter made some mistakes with some forms. For
example the nose looks damn strange. Again the
background is kept empty again... A pitty...  > 52%

Next thing is something that really impressed me: a
DOOM routine in multicolour resolution! And it is not
small either, some 30 times 5 chars large! It moves
fast and looks extremely nice. Below is a logo built
up by the standard CBM font doe to the fact that
they ran out of memory. The textures for the doom-
walls probably have to be stored in some inticate
memory consuming way to maximize way. It is very
impressive, and I have never seen anything like this
before. People are making their effects in higher
and higher resolutions these days, which I think is a
good thing.

After a long loading time, the second 3D part shows
up. It looks like it's the same routine as the first 3D
part, but this time a few objects that like + signs
extended in the Z direction. Again, they more in a
jagged fashion and they are not shown a very long
time. This fact plus the long loading time makes me
think that they are animated.

Then the old music fades out and a new one in. This
fourth and last music was done by ZYRON. For an
endpart the music is really nice. The instruments are
okay. He also used some very nice filters. The whole
tunes gives something of a sad atmosphere that
really fits to an end part in my opinion. All in all a
very good work...                                  > 78%

Preceding the standard 1X1 end-upscroller is an
effect that looks abit like fireworks. Multicoloured
pixels are being spwen out all over the screen,
twisting and twirling. Very nice and neat.


FINAL CONCLUSION:
- ------------- -

Coding: Afterall, the single effect that made the
        strongest impression on me was EDHELLON's
        pixel doom, which I really liked. OSWALD's
        plasma and tunnel effects and whirlpool
        appealed to me as well.
                                              > 70%

Graphics: All in all this demo is quite appealing to the
          eyes of the spectator. TYRANT proved once
          again that he is a promising talent and
          that he can become a great one if he
          uses the possibilites of the Interlace-FLI
          mode better and also ends leaving the
          background empty.
                                                > 55%

Musics.......: All in all the musics in VOID are pretty
               good. My favourite tune in this demo was
               the first music from ECLIPSE, because of a
               lot of variation and quite good
               instruments and filters. But also the other
               musics were very good. Maybe I like this
               demo so much because it's one of the few
               demos without those stupid "try to do a
               techno music on a C64"... I really hope to
               see more demos with "non techno" musics
               in the future, because it makes more fun
               to listen to them.

This time we can give you an exclusive report from
the C64-only party NORTH PARTY 2. Huge thanks must
go to LEMING/ONSLAUGHT/FATUM, who wrote this nice
report for us.

But now let's start with the report from the NORTH
PARTY 2...

                NORTH PARTY 2.0 REPORT

Well... LEMING/ONSLAUGHT/FATUM is here behind the
keyboard... NORTH PARTY is trying to be a tradition of
all polish parties within the last days... This time I
will try to review what happened there on 31. 07. -
02. 08. Anno Domini. ;)

My trip started when I rang GRABBA/FATUM (He lives
in the city where the party took place.) and decided
to serve a night there one day before the party,
because I had to travel to him through half Poland.
So... I got up early, and went through some stupid
cities like Poznan, Olsztyn and other stupid ones...
Believe me guys, travelling by train through half
Poland is hard and really importune for everyone...
This changing the trains is awful... But in the point I
managed to be there about 19:00... GRABBA waited for
me with his girlfriend (GRABBA2) and we took my
equipment... Do you know what it was? It was an SX-64!
And the big bag with a lot of disks... ;) It was too
much for such a small LEMING... GRABBA was shocked
by the SX-64, because he had never seen that cool
machine before... He watched it and couldn't believe
his eyes...

Anyway... We went to his house, depacked and started
drinking... He showed me his games he actually is
projecting on Amiga and other things, which I can't
remember now as we were too drunk!
The only thing you should know, what we are doing on
the parties (and before) is that we are drinking
non-stop... And then we don't remember anything! ;)
Try someday to get to one of the Polish parties and
you will see how it is... (FANTA or ICEMAN know how it
is after GRAVITY '97.)

We got up at 10:00 and went to the party place... Of
course supplied with Vodka and beers as chasers...
The party had already started... It was rather a
party than a "copy"-party... You can't imagine
yourself how great it was to see so many old pals
and chat with them... We paid and entrance of about
4 Dollars. This payage was linked with sleep, voltage,
place for computer and one eat per day. So take it
to your minds: NORTH PARTY is very cheap!
Also the Russian vodka is really cheap... (Why
Russian?!? Because the Russian border is only about
5 km away... That's why.) A 1l bottle you could buy for
about 4.5 Dollars... Also cheap... The same with
cigarettes... Just say BARTOSZYCE rulez!

Organizers of the party were very helpful for
everyone and did a great job... The first day was full
of crazy competitions like playing football (ARISE
group won the cup, and the best goal kicker was
drunken EL BANDITOS/SCS  +TRC/ARISE.)
Also some other competitions like a quiz about 64
scene, which was won by someone I can't remember
now... But it was also a cool idea... :)

There was a bar at the party place non-stop opened.
You could buy there beer, fast food etc. That's a
good plus for the organizers. I forgot, main
organizers were DRAGON SOFTWARE (BLACK LIGHT,
WEDLOCK and others)...

The party was visited by over 80 people, what was a
shock for me, as this party was planned to be
visited by over 160 people. But I don't know... Who
wasn't there is a lamer, I think. And he missed so
much fun!

I should also say something about the normal
competions... First there was the sample compo,
where WARLOCK's modules weared the pants... He
managed to win this compo of course.

Later there was the VHS competition. There were 3
asskickin' demos, released by WARLOCK/RULE3/W.  O. W.,
FATUM PIJAKZ and NIGHTRIDER/RULE3... Every demo was
cool amd it was hard to say which one was the best.
Nightrider put the MATHEMATICA parody out... It won...
FATUM took the second place with his own
demonstration, also great work! And WARLOCK did a
great job with dubbing voices under the stupid
program on TV and joked about it.

After this compo there was a break for the music
competition. Everyone was sure that KORDIAUKIS/
ARISE would win, but WACEK/ARISE was better and he
managed to win this concuration. Second was
KORDIAUKIS and third PRAISER.

The graphic compo was rather boring for me, nothing
special except VALSARY's (he won)? and KATON's
pictures.. Another nice picture was done by QUESTOR.
Nothing else... I thought that SEBALOZ would do
better, but it's his problem... ;)

Then the demo competition started... I can't
remember correctly, but there were quite nice
demos. Like ARISE and FRACTION. LEPSI's work wasn't
that successful with another boring production...
They could to better things.
EXON's dentro wasn't appreciated, but who cares.
FRACTION won and that's the point.

What else can I say... Ohh... After drinking with
PRAISER, GRABBA and GRABBA2 we played some
compos, for example we arranged the puzzles where
we painted T +A (tits and asses) and I managed it in
the best time... I won the CDisk and a disk box... Ha!
I was the fastest... (Take it to your mind that we
were so buzzed!)

Also there was a competition with playing BUGGY BOY.
Again I was the best and took the most points and
won the joystick. It was great fun!

Anyway, through all these celebrations we debated
with party freaks about Polish scene problems,
chatted with guys and describing our problems,
talking about magazines... And everything you should
know about... Such as on other parties. It is hard to
describe. You should be there and participate in it...
Just do EVERYTHING to be on the next NORTH PARTY!
The main organizers promised that NORTH PARTY will
be two times a year... So you can join us, meet us
and have good fun with us.

We also had great fun sitting in the room where was
standing a table tennis table, where we should play
with freaks and also watch VIVA on a TV set.

One of the funniest guys on the party was KOPIEYA,
who stood over half a night and sleeped (over three
hours!). Have you ever seen a sleeping guy in a
standing position? It was funny! That's how the
vodka works!

Prizes... Well... I don't know them correctly, but it's
not the point of parties. The most important thing is
a good time and maybe when more people will come
here then the prizes for the competitions would be
higher... But we don't care about this.
I know that here in Poland we are not doing demos
for cash, but just for our fun and to show the rest
of the scene that we are the most reliable part of
the scene and without us the scene would be small
and would be nothing between the other computer
scenes.

Here are guys I would greet: GRABBA, WARLOCK,
PRAISER, SHAGGY and other guys I have spent a cool
time with.

Summary... NORTH PARTY is the best tradition of all
parties ever in Poland and for me it is a shame not
to be there...
If you want to be there and you are not from Poland
I could help you to visit this asskickin' party. Just
contact me and we can meet before the party and
go there together to Bartoszyce city through
Poland... It's not a problem for me... Just do it!
