  Welcome to this very special issue of THE CREST.
      You wonder what is so special about it?!?
     Our magazine THE CREST can celebrate its first
                      aniversary!
  But why is issue 13 the ONE YEAR EDITION although a
 year has only 12 months? The answer is quite simple:
   The very first issue of THE CREST was the JULY
  EDITION 1997 and now this is the JULY EDITION 1998...
      So one year went by, but still it seems only
         something like one month or so to me.
 Time really rushed by and so all the editions of THE
                       CREST.
     I can tell you: It wasn't always easy to get the
  magazine finished right in time to keep our steady
 releasedates. Some really big stones laid in our way,
  especially at the beginning, but somehow we always
    kicked them away or sometimes also just walked
  around them... For example getting the demoreviews
   finished was one of hardest things I experienced.
     And it still is hard and will always be, I guess...
    So in this one year our motto always was: Better
     leave one chapter out then delay the magazine.
  Because in our opinion a steady releasebase is one
    of the most important things about a magazine.

 One year THE CREST... That meant for you about 5500
  (in words: five thousand and five hundred) blocks
    of text, packed into 13 issues with about 140 (in
       words: one hundred and fourty) chapters.
 In these 13 editions we gave you monthly charts and
  releasecharts. Always the hottest and latest news
   and happenings from the pal- AND the ntsc-scene.
    We brought you 26 interviews with famous scene
     personalities like ELECTRIC/EXTEND, BACCHUS/
  FAIRLIGHT, BAGDER/HORIZON, D'ARC/TOPAZ BEERLINE,
  IGNORANCE/ALPHAFLIGHT 1970 and many others from
          the cracking and the demo scene.
   Due to our monthly releasebase we nearly always
    were the very first to bring you reviews of the
   lastest scene productions from the demo market.

   To say the thruth: We are damn proud of the fact
    we managed to release the magazine really every
  month without any delay. And we know that many of
  you, our readers, pay us a lot of respect for this...
     Thanx! All you folks out there and your mostly
    positive feedback gives us enough motivation to
             keep up our work on that level...

 Also we can proudly say that we improved quite a lot.
    Especially concerning our writing style. We think
  that we found the direction we want to go and that
    we are on the right way to get the magazine WE
       always wanted to be present in the scene.
  Just look at the amount of text we had in the first
 two, three issues and compare it with the two latest
 ones. Thesedays we have nearly twice the amount of
   text we had at the beginning. This was of course
    only possible with all the help from many guys,
 especially our additional staff members. First there
  was only the three of us, DODGER, SHOK'RAY and me -
   HARDSEQUENCER. Then DANZIG joined our staff and
 also MITCH/CREST and ZYRON/F4CG/NOSTALGIA decided
           to support us with music reviews. 
   Later on UZZY became our official NTCS-reporter,
   who edits his own chapter every issue. Also SPACE
      ROY/MEGASTYLE teamed up with our staff as
                    co-editor.
 After ZYRON decided to leave our staff and edit for
  NEWSPRESS from them on and MITCH became inactive
   we looked for new support and found some helping
      hands in KRISTIAN ROSTOEN/SHAPE/HITMEN and
  TRIDENT/ACTIVE. Then also SCROLL/MEGASTYLE came
   to us to give us some coding-reviews from time to
                          time...
             And now we still got this condition...
    We, the three main-editors, want to thank you a
   thousand times! Without you other staff-members
   all this wouldn't have been possible. Thank you so
                        very much!

 Besides this we also got quite some respectable help
   from many sceners, who supported us with news,
  votesheets or helped us with the releasecharts or
   special reviews or reports or whatever! To name
  them all would surely fill some textsides but would
   be really too much. But we mentioned you at least
 once in one of the former issues and really want to
            thank you for all your help.

 After all these thank-sayings, it's finally again time
      for some credits and general information...

   This issue of THE CREST is quite short compared to
         the two, three latest issue, but certain
  circumstances made this necessary. We won't bore
  you with them, because they wouldn't be an excuse
     anyway and also aren't meant as an excuse.
  I guess next time we'll be able to give you a better
                and bigger issue again.
     As always we want to thank certain people who
 supported us in any way to get this edition finished.

This time the news section is smaller than ever, but
that's no big surprise as it's summer and only three
weeks went by since our previous issue... Let's go...

New members: THE PSYCHOPATH, BIRD

MOTIV 8 are back again... Just only some months
after the group's death a guy called THE PSYCHOPATH
got the permission by CROSSFIRE/FAIRLIGHT, the
former leader of the group, to rebuild MOTIV 8. The
only other member in the crew that is known until
now is BIRD, who joined in again.

- THE FALCON/ex-PENTAGRAM joined the new demo
  group SONIX as coder and net-member.

- STARKILLER returned to the scene! He joined PADUA
  and HITMEN as sysop and modem- and Internet-
  trader. He is planning to bring his board COLD
  FUSION back online soon.

- SKYCLAD, formerly known as MOLOCH, decided to
  leave ASCRAEUS. Also NAPHALM left ASCRAEUS to
  stay in ONSLAUGHT only.

- STEVE decided to leave CAMELOT. He stays in
  X-FACTOR as his only group.

- A guy called AKABU joined COMIC PIRATES to be a
  graphician for them.

- MSK/CREST joined VIBRANTS as second group.

- WSOFT teamed up with VENOM.

- LOCALH came to SYSTEM as his second group after
  his first group BCI.

overseas scene report

So, I see you're back.  No doubt expecting more NTSC
news, eh?  Probably expecting me to sit here and
ramble for a bit, then give my email address and say
that you can send death threats, then recount
the news in a very simple and straightforward form,
followed by a little oddly named list of all the NTSC
groups and their members.  Is that what you're
expecting?  You're expecting me to just sit back,
write my bloody chapter and be done with it?  Well
what if I don't want to, huh?  What if I feel like
writing something vastly contradictory to what I
normally write about here, perhaps something about
small furry kittens or my adventures with Alfonse
the hedgehog?  What will you do then?  Huh?  Will you
sit back and salivate over my adventures with a
small rodent-like creature, or will you simply turn
the chapter off, thinking that I am, perhaps, wildly
insane?  Hmmm?

Well, fortunately you won't have to wonder about
that at all, because I have, as always, delivered my
chapter written the same way I have always done it,
in my own indescribable style.

So, as is usual, if you have any relevant news or
happenings, corrections, suggestion, marriage

And here, just like always, is the news.

- The Fatman has apparently quit PSW.

- Following their recent demo WICKED, FOE has shut
  down.  The Phantom, shortly before disbanding one
  of the most celebrated demo groups in NTSC
  history, changed his handle to EricC. 

- In case you're interested, I think that EricC. is
  looking for a group to join.

- The third NTSC 4K demo competition has definitely
  been announced.  The deadline is definitely
  September 10, 1998.  You can quote me on that, if
  you wish.
- As reported last month, a brand new NTSC demo
  group called RETRO-64 has been formed.  Fuzz, of
  R64, gave this official statement:

"Retro 64 is the newest NTSC demo group, consisting
 of 7 members.  In alphabetical order we are Esbam
 (music), Fuzz (code, music), Knifey (music), Leppy
 (webpage, csets), Picasso (gfx), Prodigy (webpage,
 sprites) and Wort (music).  We are currently working
 on our first demo which is hopefully going to be 6
 pages long, with everything done by Retro 64
 members.  So far, the majority of the code is done
 for about 4 pages, most of the csets are complete,
 as are the sprites and graphics.  The main thing
 left to complete is the music.  We are all 15 years
 old and attend the same high school, so obviously
 we must live in the same area.  In fact, we all live
 within a 20 minute drive of each other.  Finally, we
 are willing to do a co-op demo with pretty well any
 group in the scene.  Hope you enjoy our first demo
 when it coms out, which will hopefully be pretty

I think I can speak for the scene when I say that I'm
anxious to see the new demo.  Hopefully R64 will be
a group that sticks around for a while.

CREST again clear in the lead. But SMASH DESIGNS
made a remarkable jump from 4 up to 2.

Funny to see that ALBION, HITMEN and TRIAD are

The swedish duo MITCH and DANE still have occupied
the number one spot and even DRAX, who kept the
second place, didn't manage to get close to them.

PRI is this month's highest new entry. He jumped
straight in on the 3rd place. At least we didn't
expect it any other way, because his absence last
month was really surprising.

Also WACEK is one of these month's winners. He
climbed from 10 up to 5!

What really strikes this time is the fact that in
every category the new number one is the old one!
And in every category from the demo scene the top
spot is occupied by CREST or one of its members.

We also had some self-voters again. A polish
cracker and coder from an Australia based cracking
group voted for his group and one of its crackers.
Also a guy from a strange german demo group voted
for some composers from his groups!
Seems people still haven't understood how to vote!

The ONSLAUGHT WHQ DEADZONE was down the last week
in JUNE and it's still not clear what happened... . Due
to this fact I took DEADZONE out of my LIST for this
MONTH, as I couldn't check the RELEASES on there!

This month the LAXITY EHQ DRAGONS TOWER got finally
taken down, as the SYSOP MENDRAKE was leaving
GERMANY due to his new JOB!
This means that the BOARDSCENE in GERMANY is kind
of DEAD... but with STARKILLER (EX-AFL) returning to
the scene and joining up with PADUA and HITMEN it
might change again soon, as he promised to bring his
old BOARD COLD FUSION back again!!!


This was all for the JUNE NEWS...
Not much happened, so I'll make it short, and go on
with a look at the RELEASES... .

This might be their first and last CRACK ever... ;)

The EASTGERMANS released the really nice FINAL
PREVIEW of CRAZY NEWS (0,8 POINTS).

        FIRST LEGAL PROFILE OF THE MONTH

This time we bring you an interview with a great
coder and composer. Together with his groupmates
BAGDER, MASTERMIND and EXILON he is responsible for
classic demos like THE LAST TRAKTOR 3 and A LOAD OF
OLD SHIT... Yes, I'm talking about...

interesting profiler...
(C):  Cool that you want to share some of your time
      with us making this interview...
      As always let's start with some facts about
      your person in general, please!

(B):  My name is Linus Nielsen. I was born on the 8th
      of February 1969 and I live in Stockholm,
      Sweden. I work as a consultant in a company
      named FRONTEC TEKNIKSYSTEM AB, mainly as an
      embedded systems programmer. It's the same
      company where BAGDER, KJER and ZAGOR work,
      too, so half of the HORIZON group work at
      FRONTEC at the moment.
      In my spare time, I play a little with my PC, but
      there is not much time left for programming,
      I'm afraid. I do some web programming, but
      that's all.

(C):  Aha, so seems FRONTEC also might have the
      subtitle THE HORIZON COMPANY, hehe...
      Please give us now a short story of how you
      got in touch with the CBM64 and how your
      scene history started!

(B):  When I was about 12 years old, my father
      introduced me to the world of computers, and
      since then I'm stuck! I wanted to have my own
      computer so bad! In 1984 I bought a Commodore
      64 in England, and it's the same one that I have
      today (although it's broken at the moment). I
      had a few friends that helped me to get
      started with the C64, but I got the most help
      from my father. He helped me build a sampler
      for the user port, and a MIDI interface for the
      cartridge port. I used the C64 a lot to make
      music, mainly as a sampler.
      In 1987, I came across some guys from THE
      SILENTS, and they invited me to a copy party in
      Alvesta. I went there with a friend of mine,
      forming the group MICROSYSTEMS DIGITAL
      TECHNOLOGIES. People were SO impressed with
      my sampler!!! What a surprise! I didn't think
      that I was anything special among these
      hackers, but suddenly I was! There, I met
      BAGDER, ZAGOR and KJER from the group SUPER
      SWAP SWEDEN. They wanted me to make some
      Sound Monitor tunes for them. I was honoured!
      Later that year, I met EXILON. He lived only a
      hundred yards from my place, and he showed
      me some of the stuff he had made. He was
      MILES ahead of me when it came to programming
      skills! He joined MICROSYSTEMS and we put
      together a demo for the upcomming Alvesta
      Party in 1988.
      At the party we met BAGDER and the other
      guys, they had now formed a group called
      HORIZON. They were SO sure to win the demo
      competition until we showed them our stuff...
      MASTERMIND was so impressed that he couldn't
      say a word. Finally he mumbled: "Are you
      participating in the demo competition...?"
      We did, and HORIZON won by a few votes, but
      after the announcement of the winners, we
      discovered that another group called
      HEPTAGON, had received a lot of votes, and
      they didn't even participate. It turned out
      that a lot of people thought that our demo was
      made by HEPTAGON. When we added those votes
      to MIRCOSYSTEMS', we got far more votes than
      HORIZON did. So one COULD say that
      MIRCOSYSTEMS won that competition! It sure
      feels good to win the first demo competition
      you participate in!
      We joined HORIZON later that year.
      By the way, the demo is called BONANZA by MDT.
      Check it out! It still rox!!!

(C):  Uh, quite interesting story... Really! So
      MIRCOSYSTEMS DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES and
      HORIZON were your only groups?

(B):  Yes, only MICROSYSTEMS DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
      and HORIZON.

(C):  Okee, dokee. You were and still are a quite
      well-known coder and composer in the CBM64
      scene, no doubt... What made you become a
      composer and later a coder as well? Do you
      maybe have some other talent like cracking
      or painting?

(B):  Am I well known? That feels good to hear! I
      never thought that people would remember me
      at all!
      Well, the reason that I became a composer is
      of course that I started using my C64 for
      sampling and composing. Later, BAGDER made
      his own SKYLINE routine, and I started making
      music for real. I never thought my music was
      good at all, but apparently some people liked
      it...!
      After a while I got tired of only making music,
      so I took up coding together with EXILON. We
      are a magnificent team, he and I, and we made
      some really good things together.
      Actually, I started cracking in my early days
      with MIRCOSYSTEMS, but I got quite tired of it. I
      think it was mainly because I had such lousy
      supply of originals.
      I am a lousy painter, so THAT is out of the
      question.

(C):  But I once even saw a logo by you in one of
      your demos, if I remember right. But I guess
      this was just a try, wasn't it?!?
      Anyway, are there any coders you respect a
      lot?

(B):  EXILON/HORIZON and JABBA/LIGHT.

(C):  Yeah, understandable. They were real killers
      in their subject.
      You were quite active back then and
      contributing parts to demos like THE LAST
      TRAKTOR 3, A LOAD OF OLD SHIT or, like
      mentioned above, BONANZA and others.
      Which one of them would you call the one that
      you are most proud of?

(B):  Hard to say. I am really proud of BONANZA,
      where we made a three-part demo with a new,
      never-seen-before effect in each part. Beat
      that!
      I think that the product I am most proud of is
      THE LAST TRAKTOR III. We came to the party, and
      people thought that HORIZON was almost dead,
      and couldn't compete with the new talents of
      today, but we showed them!
      That was the last competition we participated
      in, and we WON!
      THE LAST TRAKTOR III is, in my opinion, the best
      demo that HORIZON ever made! It kicked ASS!

(C):  Yeah right, it absolutely did!
      You said that THE LAST TRAKTOR III was the last
      demo from HORIZON that took part in a demo
      competition... Can we maybe hope for a
      comeback from you and your group somewhen
      to see you winning competitions again?

(B):  I don't think so. I and EXILON had THE game of
      the century coming up, but my C64 broke down,
      and I moved to Stockholm, so we didn't finish
      it. I have a little time and little motivation.
      Maybe I'm getting old? :   -)

(C):  I guess so, hehe! Anyway, a pity that you won't
      return, but things can't always go the best
      way...
      But let's continue with something different...
      Some brainstorming! What comes into your mind
      when I say...

(B):  PC........: Hurts to say, but I couldn't live
                  without it...
         Parties..: Those were the days...
         Internet..: Big commercial boom! Unfortunately.
         Trackmos: Eeeh? Sounds like a demo, loading
                   from disk as it goes along, probably
                   taking forever to watch.
         Alcohol...: Clears the mind. :-)
         Sex.......: Wondeful!

(C):     Aha... To INTERNET you said that it's got a huge
         commercial boom... But do you think it might be
         a good way for the CBM64 scene to go to the
         Internet?

(B):     Sure, why not? It is THE way of spreading
         stuff!

(C):     It seems most people think so because the
         scene is more and more heading into that
         direction, without any doubt. The Internet also
         gives newcomers a quite good chance and
         brings old sceners together again as well. So
         what do you think of today's scene style and
         do you maybe prefer the golden days back
         then?

(B):     To be honest, I don't know much about the
         scene today. But I can say that I really miss
         the good OLD days, back in the 80's. Things
         were a lot more exciting then, when all the
         effects and tricks were discovered. The
         parties were smaller, you actually had a
         chance to KNOW everyone at the party, and the
         prize money didn't matter at all. I miss those
         days. We were some kind of pioneers.

(C):     Yo, things are a lot different these days, even
         though the scene is getting smaller again.
         And what do you think made the C64 and its
         scene so special back then?

(B):     The C64. It is an amazing computer, easy to
         learn and so powerful. I love it! No computer
         will ever take its place. It has been THE
         educational tool for kids that wanted to learn
         how computers work. How many guys that
         started with the C64 back then have now great
         jobs in the computer industry?
         Many, many!!! I think that no other generation
         will know that much about the computers than
         the C64 generation! I am proud to be a part of
         it!

(C):     Yes, very true words...
         But was there also something bad about the
         C64 and its scene, in your opinion?

(B):     No, nothing!

(C):     So you should have never left it, hehe... ;)
         Now, what about your favourites in some scene
         and non-scene categories?!?

(B):     This is hard, since I don't know a thing of
         today's groups. I can only give you my
         favourites back then...

(C):     That's okay, of course. If these are your
         favourites then this ARE your favourites, no
         matter how old... Hehe... Okay, here we go...

(C):     Interesting that many sceners/ex-sceners
         name this book as their favourite. I also like
         this one quite a bit.
         You mentioned in one of your answers some
         time ago that you also did some cracking back
         in the days. So you don't dislike it that much
         like some "only legal" sceners do?

(B):     I don't have much to say about the illegal
         scene. i really don't care that much. I think
         that when it comes to cracking games and
         applications, it has only been good for the
         C64. I think that one of the main reasons that
         so many people bought a C64 was that they
         could get so many games for free.

(C):     And did you ever have any war in the CBM64
         scene?

(B):     Nope. Well, once we were quite pissed off when
         we disqualified in a demo compo in Denmark. I
         think it was IKARI.

(C):     I guess everybody would have been pissed off
         then...
         I hope that you now won't we pissed off, but
         we have reached the end of this interview.
         Do you want to say something out of your
         belly? Maybe some greetings or messages?!?

(B):     Keep up the good work! The C64 is unique, keep
         it that way! There will never be another C64!

       SECOND LEGAL PROFILE OF THE MONTH

now and here read a profile of another guy who was
a great coder and composer. He made stuff for
ancient demos like BIAS CRUSHER, ELYSION, ABORTION,
ELDORADO or TOUR DE FORCE.
He is the one and only...

Have phun reading this nice coffeetalk...
(C):  Hiho MIXER! Welcome to our magazine! Nice to
      have you here with me...
      To start straight off, please tell the audience
      a little bit about you in general, just some
      things from the real life!

(M):  My name is XXXXX XXXXXX, citizen of Finland,
      age 24, a student of Industrial Management in
      Finland and recently System Dynamics in
      Bergen, Norway.
      I spend too much time trying to compose music
      on whatever instrument I get my hands on. I
      should do some sports, but I don't.

(C):  So, you are composing a lot... Do you play in a
      band?

(M):  I meant that I at least try to get a sound out
      of any instrument I get my hands on, my
      abilities to play the intrument is a seperate
      issue... :)
      We have a little group of musicians, and we
      jam together once in a while, we just got a
      new training place. I play mainly keyboards,
      and then little guitar. Most persons of our
      band, except for me (well, two years of piano)
      have had a long classical training on flute or
      violin or cello, but we are playing mainly our
      own songs with two guitars, bass, keyboard
      and drums setting just to get rid of the extra
      energy. The music is guitar driven stuff and
      we try to be different, though we end up
      sounding like the bands we like. When we play
      covers they are mainly METALLICA, CMX, FAITH
      NO MORE, TYPE-O-NEGATIVE, OASIS, and many
      many others. Guitar stuff. Luckily we have a
      rather capable singer. The name of the band
      changes from a gig to gig. We do not do many
      gigs. Perhaps one in a year.

(C):  Ah, interesting!
      But now let's get over to the scene related
      stuff... How did the relation YOU and C64 start?

(M):  That's hard to remember exactly and I am not
      certain of all the events or other factors, but
      it happened something like following.
      My father had bought a VIC-20 almost
      immediately after it became available in
      Finland. He was generally interested in
      computers and it was just okay for me, a
      young kid who wants to play games. So I used
      VIC mainly for playing games. I kept writing
      down those Basic programs that were available
      in the computer magazines and learning my
      Basic coding that way. Also it was the only way
      I could get games at that time. I even composed
      some music with VIC, with no musical talent at
      all it must have been an ordeal for my parents,
      like the next few years after that.
      At some point of time 84-86 my father bought a
      C64 and I begun learning some machine code. I
      don't exactly remember how I got into that: it
      might have had something to do with our
      school's computer club. Anyway, there were
      some C-64's by some of my friends and of
      course the games started go around from hand
      to hand and some methods for duplicating them
      had to be found out. I also remember that I got
      to know BX somewhere around that time, he had
      a C-64 and always got some games from
      somewhere.
      I got my hands on some early demos. Basicly
      those demos consist of a picture, a scroll and
      music. I was ripping music and graphics out of
      everything I got my hands on and then at some
      point of time I made my first demo: THE RAMBO
      DEMO. It had the loading picture of RAMBO,
      which I had modified so that Rambo had an
      electric guitar in his hands instead of a
      machine gun. Below the picture there was a
      ripped scroller, which I think was a plain
      character scroller with the famous system
      font. The music in the demo was ROB HUBBARD's
      digi track from SKATE OR DIE. I don't think the
      demo was widely spread or anything, since I
      was not yet aware of the scene other than via
      some crack intros and a few demos. I signed my
      demo as JAMES BOND II. This was 1986 I believe.

(C):  Uh, nice story... And how did your scene career
      continue? Which groups have you been in later
      on?

(M):   First of all thanks for SCAPEGOAT/TOPAZ for
       the TOPAZ BEERLINE history and DESTINO/ORIGO
       for the ORIGO homepages, which refreshed my
       memory on some of the following...
       The first group I joined in was TGB, THREE
       GENIUS BOYS. My handle was JAMES BOND II at
       that time.
       Then there was POWER DIVISION (DIVISION OF
       POWER) where I was known as WILD FINN and
       after a while changed my handle to MIXER
       (1988). I think we released one or two demos,
       nothing special really.
       The next group was called ALBION (the first
       one) and we released a demo or two if I
       remember correctly. in the year of 1989 ALBION
       split up and BRAINS was formed. We released a
       demo: REVOLUTIONS. It was nice. At that time I
       also did my first music routine, before that I
       was using UBIKs routine, FUTURE COMPOSER and
       SOUNDMONs for composing. Shortly after
       REVOLUTIONS, BRAINS became the core of ORIGO,
       and we released a number of demos that were
       well noted in the scene at the time.

(C):   Yep, and they still are beautiful today...
       Well, you said that was in ALBION. As you might
       know nowadays there is another group called
       ALBION with member only from Poland. What do
       you think about this?

(M):   It is fine, I do not have anything against it
       since they obviously chose their name without
       knowing of us.
       By the way, if you change the letters of
       ALBION you can get ao. the word BIOLAN, which
       is a brand name for a soil fertiliser sold in
       Finland. It is made of chicken S..T  ...Just a
       thought, and not related anyway to the name
       ALBION, which is actually the name of a sword
       in an old myth as we all probably know.

(C):   Funny story, hehe! Okay, I guess the members
       of the ALBION crew like to read that you don't
       have any hard feelings against them...
       By the way, where did you get your handle
       from?

(M):   No idea, I guess it just is that I keep messing
       things up.

(C):   Hmmm, so far you didn't make that impression
       on me... :)
       Anyway, do you still own a CBM64?

(M):   No.

(C):   But do you still have any contacts to the C64
       scene or to some old sceners?

(M):   Yes, I IRC on C-64 channel once in a while and
       know some folks personally from the "old
       days".

(C):   And can we expect a comeback from you
       somewhen?

(M):   Not likely event to occur.

(C):   I guessed so... But I never give up the hope,
       hehe...
       In your long scene life you surely had a lot of
       nice but also bad experiences... Which one
       would you name as the best one?

(M):   The HORIZON party, April 1990. We were a group
       of young kids and suddenly we won the demo
       competition with our demo ELDORADO. If I
       remember right we won LIGHT by one single
       point. All the deadline coding and such. We had
       to drop one demo part away, and it never got
       into any demo since then.

(C):   To release this one should be a good
       motivation for you to return to the scene...
       Hehe...
       Would you call ELDORADO your personal
       favourite demo from the ones that you made
       something for?

(M):   REVOLUTIONS/BRAINS was a good demo I did one
       demopart on that, I never did any fancy
       demoparts. Some disturbing music that I
       composed maybe... You tell me.

(C):   Oh, I loved it! And I can promise you: Many
       others out there, too!
       Well, please give us now your favourites in the
       following categories...

(M):   Cracking Group: HOTLINE, IKARI, TRIAD, F4CG
       Demo Group....: SSS, HORIZON

(C):     Aha... What do you as coder and composer think
         of the cracking scene?

(M):     Cracking scene is as natural thing as
         breathing. It is a human thing to do. When ever
         there are some limits, they will be eventually
         broken. There was not that sharp distinction
         between a legal scene and cracking scene
         some tem years ago, these issues were just
         getting hot topics. Cracking can require
         creative thinking, but it does not really build
         anything.

(C):     And have you ever had any kind of trouble or
         war with some sceners in all these years?

(M):     No wars, some disagreements especially in the
         early days, but no wars that I can remember.

(C):     You mentioned before that you don't have a
         CBM64 anymore... So maybe this questions might
         be not so easy for you to answer: Would you
         call the C64 scene dead? Or how long will it
         stay alive, in your eyes?

(M):     Not dead and won't be dead for a while. Even if
         the last C-64 machine is crashed 64 will be
         emulated until the end of time. Emulation is a
         good thing. It is better than imitation.

(C):     Oh, that word "imitation" leads us to another
         question... SMASH DESIGNS recently did a
         convertion of the well-known PC demo SECOND
         REALITY by FUTURE CREW... What do you think of
         this idea of imitating PC demos on our beloved
         CBM64?

(M):     Perhaps someone does TOMBRAIDER on 64 as
         well. :)
         I think the C-64 SECOND REALITY is a good joke
         on a PC-party. Imagination is better than
         imitation.

(C):     So now that we are at the point of new styles
         in the scene... What do you think of the new-
         school on the C64? Do you more like the spirit
         of the "golden days"?

(M):     I can give you my opinion, none can blame me
         for that, right? To tell the truth: I have not
         followed too much about the scene nowadays. I
         have seen some new demos (1992-) and they
         have been very nice, though there is not much
         new stuff, just combinations of old ideas,
         tricks and so on, a lot of ideas converted
         from PC to C-64. I guess everyone has to go
         through the same steps nowadays in learning
         all the tricks.
         In the good old days many of the tricks were
         not quite found yet. For example, a never
         declared competition about who makes the
         multiplexer with most sprites on the side-
         borders (KJER/HORIZON won, I guess). Who
         makes biggest Twist-Twist or most char
         scrollers etc. It was competition against the
         4CC7 clockcycles per frame. Later on after
         going through most of the VIC registers one by
         one the competition focused on vector
         graphics and best ideas and complex
         calculations. The focus shifted away from
         doing 50 frames/second stuff. So, my question
         would be: What is the new school? I think the
         principles are mainly the same and the best
         programmers nowadays have been in the scene
         for a while already, so is there a new school?

(C):     Yes, of course there is... And there style is
         very obvious in there demos. The demos mostly
         feature effects with 4X4 or even 8X8 pixel
         resolution to display things like vectors or
         whatever. Have you ever seen such a demo?
         And if yes, do you like this style?

(M):     Yes, I have seen some. Some look nice, some do
         not. Once a thing is done why do it several
         times? Which is the hook in such demopart, the
         "strange video mode" or the thing that is
         calculated on such videomode?
         Vectors look terrible, some color stuff is
         okay. Also I don not understand all this picture
         rotation stuff, it makes me feel dizzy. 40X25
         or 80X25 screen resolutions... Not many pixels
         to calculate or plot... Do they do that stuff in
         border also? I do not think I saw any yet. :)

(C):     The same for me...
         But let's get back to the old-school... Please
         make a comment to each of the following
         groups!

(M):     BLACKMAIL........: Nice demos.
         BEYOND FORCE.....: A lot of good friends and
                            scene expertise, good
                            boozers
          PANORAMIC DESIGNS: Nice demos.
          CREST............: Tooth paste, nice demos.
          HORIZON..........: Maybe the best coder
                             group ever.
         ANTIC...............: Do not remember much.
         MEGASTYLE INC. .....: Nice demos.

(C):     What do you think is so special about the C64
         and its scene?

(M):     Unique music, and the joy for figuring out new
         things and the memorable games that were not
         quite space invaders anymore and really had
         some IDEA behind them.

(C):     Yeah, that's true... And what is the worst thing
         about the scene, as far as you are concerned?

(M):     Bosses, boasting. :) Swappers who became
         traders, wars over some silly things. All the
         folks who tried to make the scene thing
         organised.

(C):     Nowadays the CBM64 relates more and more to
         the Internet... Do you sanction this?

(M):     Internet is a good thing, the only problem is
         that PC or other platform is required in the
         middle for transferring files... On the other
         hand, perhaps it is just the emulators that
         will keep the C-64 alive. There still are some
         folks that are using C-64 directly in
         connection to net, and I raise a hat for those
         people, and all those hardware freaks who
         know the 64 in and out. By the way, is there an
         Ms-Dos emulator for C-64?

(C):     Hehe... That would be cool indeed!
         To conclude your scene experiences... Do you
         think that the CBM64 was an important point
         in your life?

(M):     C-64 has been important, it has provided some
         kind of community that I once felt very much
         attached to. (Talk about Manslows hierarchy
         of needs.) Also I got to understand computers
         from a very basic level, which is something
         that not many folks nowadays get outside
         hardware-engineering studies.
         Recently I have been studying System Dynamics
         that utilises a lot of computer simulation, and
         all the stuff C-64 taught me is now needed. I
         grew up with this stuff, so what else can I
         say...

(C):     Well, you can say some words to each of the
         following things in our brainstorming part... ;)

(M):     Parties...: Deadline programming.
         Trackmos: We did one of those. 
         Boards..: Swap, Key, PCB
         PC......: Personal Computer
         Internet..: Hope it stays Internet and does not
                     become Commercenet.
         Alcohol.... : Hangover as the source of
                       inspiration.
         Sex...........: Women

(C):     Okay, let's stay off the computer as topic...
         Do you have some kind of dream girl? What
         does she look like?

(M):     I don't know about the looks, but the way she
         moves must be something special...

(C):     And if you had to go to a lonely island and you
         could only take three things with you there....
         What would these three things be?

(M):     A woman, swiss army knife and enough matches
         for the rst of my stay there.

(C):     Hehe... Tricky answer you gave me here...
         Well, now I'm out of questions and I guess we
         reached the end of this interview... Is there
         anything left you want to say? This is your
         chance to send some greeting to old friends!

(M):     All ORIGO member, most of the BEYOND FORCE,
         some BYTERAPERS, TOPAZ BEERLINE especially
         SCAPEGOAT, SID musicians, the few folks I used
         to swap disks with and everyone at IRC C-64.

         story of my life or what do you think? :)

It's been quite some time since we got this chapter
in THE CREST. But now HARDSEQUENCER is gonna speak
his mind again... This time he'll say some words about
converted graphics in general and converted
graphics that were self-painted on other systems
like PC or Amiga. You'll also have the pleasure to
read some personal opinions from different famous
graphicians about this topic and the latest
happenings concerning this topic.
Okay, here we go...
The topic of converted graphics is well-discussed
these days again. No doubt, the most important
reason for this can be only: RAYDEN/ALPHAFLIGHT '70.
With his graphics he caused quite some arguements
and discusion within the scene-graphicians. He won
the graphic-competitions at THE PARTY 5 in Denmark
as well as the one at the MEKKA+SYMPOSIUM '98. He
always said and still says that his graphics were
handpixelled and that he didn't convert them. But
when he became drunk he finally admitted what
everyone knew already: He does his graphics on the
Amiga and converts them to the C64 then...
Well, this short "story" should be a nice
introduction to this topic of converted graphics.

Converting graphics has always been something that
parted the scene...
To say my opinion about converted graphics straight
out: CONVERTED GRAPHICS SUCK! Because what do they
have to do with the CBM64?
Mostly guys convert graphics to get the credit they
don't deserve at all and to get popular with "stolen"
things... Converting a graphic from PC down to C64
and pretending that it was self-painted is just pure
ripping! It is like releasing a demo with only ripped
code from another demo and saying: "Look what I've
done! One of the best routines ever and entirely
coded by me! Vote for me!". It is just the same, isn't
it?!? It is nothing but a lie and stealing honour that
you don't deserve in no way!

But there are also people that explicitly say that
their graphics are converted... And in my opinion this
is okay then, because then everyone knows that this
piece of art wasn't done by you but just only
converted.
And then converting isn't bad at all. Converted
pictures can sometimes look really nice and can be
good fillers in demos or so... Some pictures are damn
hard to paint on the C64 and converting is then of
course a lot easier. So if you ever wanted a certain
picture on the CBM64 then convert it, but don't try
to get a single bit of credit for it! In this way
converted graphics are quite okay, aren't they?!?
I think so, and many other graphicians, too. For
example the ones I asked about this topic... Here is
what they think about it...

JOE THE MADMAN: "First of all I'm suprised this topic
                is still up for discussion. Anyhow,
                as long as the "converter" doesn't
                expect to get credits for the
                conversion it's okay with me. The
                main thing is to respect other's
                work. When I converted I always
                made sure to underline the fact
                that it was conversion. Though at
                some point of time it gets to easy
                just converting, then I see no point
                in doing it more."

ELECTRIC: "You can always scan a picture, convert it
          and fix it so well that no one (and NO ONE
          I say) will see it actually is converted. But
          what do these kind of gfxers think when
          they "draw" their pictures? Fame and
          glory? To climb up on charts and to be "the
          number one"? Probably yes. Sad, isn't it? It
          is stealing and cheating and wrong! If
          someone wins a competition with converted
          picture earning cash and the others who
          have done good job and used much more
          time and brains by drawing something that
          is their own, it is wrong. How low can you
          go? Don't really know. But one thing is
          sure, I can't give any credit for these
          people and I can't consider them as
          "friends". It's boring to critizise this kind
          of thing as it should be ingenue for all.
          Remember always that everyone can study
          the technic to fix a picture - and usually
          these people can't actually DRAW at all.
          And all the sceners look at their piece of
          "work" and say "WHOAH! COOL!". The true
          master gfxer - that's what they are, yeah.
          HA I say.
          Drawing an own picture on paper and
          convering/fixing it? That's ok for me as
          the result is unique. But this also needs a
          statement that it is converted and fixed.
          People should concentrate on converting
          (and fixing) for example photos of scene
          people, I would very much appreciate that.
          Or to release a good quality porn series on
          C64 - good deal!"

ANDREAS: "Converted graphics are lame in most
         cases, especially in gfx compos or in most
         demos. I think that C64 gfx should be made
         on a C64 and not taken from an Amiga or a
         PC. It's often kewl to use some styling
         ideas from the Amiga or PC, but the true
         C64 style is always the best. One thing is
         that really good-made C64 graphics often is
         much better and more astonishing than gfx
         on other platforms."

DEEKAY: "I think about the same that ED/WD once
        said... They can be a bonus for the C64
        scene, e. g. as fillers or char-screens in
        demos. If handed in for a pixel-gfx
        competition, the thing is different, it's a
        hoax, fraud and unfair lazyass bullshit! If
        they don't want to work, they should go and
        play with their playstations again instead of
        polluting the C64 scene! ...You do hard work,
        you get respect, you wire, you're a looser
        and chickenshit (as probably always in life!
        8 )"

ELECTRIC mentioned another interesting point... In my
opinion also painting on paper, then scanning and
converting it isn't okay... At least it still needs the
credit that it is scanned and converted. Also
painting only the outlines and scanning and
converting them isn't okay without mentioning this
helpful steps. Because the outlines are a very
important point in every picture, so they should be
C64 drawn, too! And I really don't understand why
some people convert the outlines... Painting the
outlines might be quite hard, but when you spend so
much time in painting all the rest, then why not also
invest some time in the outlines?!?
Another point that was mentioned is the thing that
converted graphics often win graphic-competitions
at parties. I'm also a bit upset about this discussion.
Because many guys always say that it's unfair that
converted graphics win the competitions and that
they didn't get the place they deserved, but on the
other hand they always say that they are painting
just for fun... Doesn't this stand in contrast? As far
as I'm concerned, I don't mind if a converted picture
wins and I don't mind which place my picture gets, I
do it just for fun and I'm satisfied when I can be
sure that my picture is nice and that I like it myself
and that I can say that I'm satisfied with the result
of my work after many days/weeks of work. It is
really a nice feeling when you have finished a
picture after really hard work on the C64 and you
gave it your personal little touch and you can say:
"Yes! That's it!". For me this is motivation enough to
paint on and on...

Anyway, let's get over to the topic of Amiga and PC
painted graphics that then get converted to the C64.
Well, I must admit that I really don't like such artists
that do that and do NOT mention that they
converted and painted on another machine. It is
really much easier to paint on Amiga or PC. I don't
know that much about graphic tools on other
machines, but I know this much and this is true: You
have so many special functions in these tools that
you can easily do good graphics. For example you
even needn't do colourfadings, the computer does
this then for you!
Well, let's see what again my four guest reporters
have to say about Amiga and Pc painted graphics...

DEEKAY: "It's atleast better, though not completely...
        I never got the point: I pixel my stuff on
        Amiga/PC and hand it in the C64 compo? What
        is this about then??? Atleast they did the
        pic themselves, but with tools like pens,
        smear fingers and cut'n'paste they rid
        themselves of a lot of work, they have no
        colorclashes and so on... Be on the C64 - be
        ready to WORK hard is what I say! There
        ain't no Mircosoft Developer Network that
        supports your girly little ass with new
        degenerated useless tools that more and
        more rid you off the burden of this ugly
        thing called "working"!
        People should start boycotting IFLI, as it's
        the only mode that comes close to a bitplane
        or Junkie mode, meaning it has hardly any
        color-clashed and thatfor is the most
        convenient mode for wirers. Any other mode
        gives a fucken lot of color-clashes or is
        just too complex (UIFLI) for a stoopid
        program to produce a decent result, and
        that would mean re-working almost the
        entire pic, something a cheater would prolly
        never do! ...cuz that's "work"! (Yuck! There it
        was again, that word!)"

ELECTRIC: "This is more a question of a graphician's
          moral. It's a fact that it's more easier and
          faster to draw by using all the friendly
          software PC and Amiga do have; compared
          to drawing with for example KOALA PAINTER
          (if you don't remember this piece of shit
          full of pure evilness I can tell you that
          it's total HELL to draw a picture with it -
          and I did over 50 of them). In my point of
          view, I have drawn and I will draw all my
          pictures for C64 with C64 because it's
          natural - there was no Amigas or PCs when
          I started this thing. I'm not going to argue
          with anyone who uses PC to draw for C64 -
          I don't like it but that's not my problem.
          But hey! Do these people call themselves
          C64 gfxers? That's it!"

ANDREAS: "Of course it is ok to paint on other
         platforms and convert them to the C64!
         However, using those in compos etc. really
         suck! The gfx is self painted and
         converted. To use these gfxs in demos or
         compos should be criminal. :)"

JOE THE MADMAN: "Hardly. It's very easy to draw on
                the PC, the only thing hard is to
                prepare the picture for C64. I've
                experimented with a lot of
                different programs, and can almost
                convert a picture without loosing a
                single pixel - especially with the
                I-FLI format. So no matter if it's
                selfpainted or "ripped" - I think it's
                too damn convenient. It was always
                more fun doing the graphics by
                joystick (I loved the clicking moving
                sound!)"

As you can see here the opinions differ a little bit.
But I have to agree completely to JTM's opinion. It's
really too damn easy, and painting on the C64 might
be much harder, but also features much more FUN, in
my opinion... And fun is all why we should be/are
doing this scene-thing, isn't it?!?
Also I can't understand why people paint on the PC/
Amiga to release it then on the C64! Shouldn't it be
released on PC/Amiga then?!? It is an Amiga/PC gfx
and should be released in this scene! I really wonder
why guys like RAYDEN don't put it out in the right
scene and not on the C64... Maybe they fear to gain
not the first place on the other system? I guess so...
A shame that it is that way...
I can only say that the true C64 graphics always
were, are and will be better, more original and really
fighting for the real C64 spirit... And that's the
point it's all about: With the C64 we can want to show
what still is possible with this oldtimer under the
computers without any 200 MHz processor. That is
the real CBM64 scene spirit. And this should be kept,
also with the graphics...

I hope this chapter gave you quite some look on this
topic of converted graphics and what some artists
think about it and maybe I also made you think a bit
about it...

  For some time I've been planning to do a homepage
  for C64-art. I've already received a lot of graohics
           and even more positive feedback.
  Now I got my new domain (WWW.JORGEN.DK), which has
unlimited space and no restrictions unlimited traffic
     access. So finally I can realize my project.
   Therefor I urge you to spread the rumour, that I'm
    looking for C64-graphic for my gallery. I would of
   course prefer collections, but small pieces are of
                course also welcome.
   Since I don't have the time to rip a lot of graphic
   from C64 to PC, so feel free to send me a C64-disc.
   Don't expect me to return it - so ONLY SEND COPIES.
