Dear Readers, 1st of June 1994 The summer has finally hit Europe, and it is time to put the computer behind us, which most sceners most likely will do as well with their vacations coming up. Due to this we can expect an inactive summer, but the more time off the better, then we can return fresh and new inspirations for what to amaze the scene with next. Due to the summer, we at THE PULSE MAGAZINE will also be holding a break. We announced this all spring, so there is no excuse for you when you notice to your horror that there will be no JULY edition of your favourite magazine. But hey, I think you can spare us the time off one time a year, and we will of course promise you to be back good and ready for a new season in the business of bringing you high quality text. I would like to thank everyone involved with THE PULSE for their most professional attitude towards the magazine. They have been great, and without them I would most likely be left doing dishes for a Swedish meatball company (not a chance). I hope you will all have a great summer - I know I will! At the moment everyone is living up to the job of which they have been assigned, which makes me confident in knowing we have got the toughest staff in the world today. We could still need another European correspondant though, someone with great insight on the demo scene and a source for news and inspiration. You need to be good at English, as you would be working as an editor for our many chapters based on news and reports. News journal
+ NEWS JOURNAL - THE HEADLINES + ----------------------------------------- Welcome to another edition of the NEWS JOURNAL. This is the place to update your knowledge about the happenings in the scene - stay tuned to the WORLD'S NEWS LEADER. This month has been quite slow with what just about every- thing was concerned, and the news was no exception either. The reason for this is undoubtedly the return of the hot and moist weather we call summer. This is of course also the reason why we at THE PULSE MAGAZINE will be holding our vacation from this edition onto the end of the summer, who wants to miss great weather like this? (Although it is dark and glommy outside at the present time, but heck). Make sure to keep us informed about the NEWS within your group. We promote a better scene, and with that comes a unique system built on information - we all have the right to know what is going on in our scene, that is the charm of the 64-scene. Use our ADDRESSES to send us NEWS or if you have a modem, you are more than welcome to call our European HQ, DOMINIC, to hand us your NEWS. NEWS JOURNAL consists of journalists DUKE, CROSSFIRE and SPLATTERHEAD and hosted by DUKE as editor. * The legendary Danish top group 2000AD returned to the scene, but it appeared to be an unnatural re-birth. FATE, a member of 2000AD on the AMIGA, claimed to have the rights for any projects outside of the AMIGA with the 2000AD name was the man of this immoral grave digging. To begin with everything seemed to be going the wrong direction with this group aswell (seeing so many other rebuilt top groups going down lately) when FATE took in some of the Danish VISION members and MOTIV 8 outcasts, and so it proved to be later on as well. Only a couple of weeks later, FATE decided to kick out DISHY, DECANE/PROBLEM LOVER and SATAN of the group, while the rest was asked to leave, as FATE went on and killed the undead group. We hope the scene will learn from this episode, which unfortunately is JUST another one in a long line of immoral and disrespective results when some one decides to bring back a big name to cut through to fame without having a single clue on how to carry on the name. A rumour was going around, that some one was supposed to bring back the true kings of Danish cracking-history, THE PAPILLONS, but as it looks this is fortunately just a sick rumour and hopefully will remain that way. The news did not end on this continent after this episode, as DISHY, SATAN and RAY went back to giving VISION a second try, this time reforming for an uncounted time. Hopefully now, VISION will prove to become what they proclaimed they would be. * The demo scene appears to be boiling at the moment, with the return of the legendary BYTERAPERS in May with an excellent demo most definitely one of the best 1994 has to offer (read review in WORLD OF DEMOS). MR.SEX appears to be the only official member and remainder of the popular group, but no doubt many will hope to learn more about this remarkable comeback to the 64-scene. * Also CREST appears to be getting ready to do a comeback in the demo scene. Although they have not been anyway for as long as the BYTERAPERS, they have surely been missed by the crowd of demo lovers around. According to DRAX of CREST, they have already prepared a couple of parts, and it appears GOLDRUSH will also be making a comeback to the scene. This could very well seem to be the return of the most powerful demogroup of the century. Whether or not VISION and CROSSBOW will be making a comeback has not yet been confirmed. * REGINA is getting ready to realise their plans to enter the demo market this fall. They started off by signing on the Hungarian graphician MERCURY/LETHARGY, and is at the moment negotiating with new and promising talents within the demo scene. Meanwhile DR.ZIVAGO has started trading, and his address is located in THE BLACKBOARD. * TALENT made their current memberstatus official. It looks as follows in JUNE : BOD : Leader. MAJESTY : Original supplier, Organizer. CHRYSAGON : Cracker. COUNT ZERO : Fixer, Co-Sysop. ROCKSTAR : Fixer. GREENFROG : Coder. STONE : Card-supplier, swapper. TBB : Swapper. SORCERROR : Graphician (ontrial). TOXYC : Graphician (on trial). NIGHTWRITER : Sysop (FORPLAY). MORRISSEY : Sysop(DOWN BY LAW). Their American boards are reachable on the following numbers: DOWN BY LAW : XXX - XXX - XXXX FORPLAY : XXX - XXX - XXXX Looking at the success TALENT has had the past couple of months with many releases, it is quite ironical to notice that TALENT only has one official cracker. The group does hold a couple of other capable crackers, but they are inactive. * SCS+TRC signed on the recently returned STEVE/LASER to the squad, he also brought along with him his English BBS, which is only a couple of months old. The inactive swapper DANNIE decided to start trading again, boosting the already strong trading side. TROOPER, the editor of the Hungarian magazine METAMORPHOSIS was kicked out of the group due to what could be described as indifferences between the leadership and TROOPER about the position of his magazine METAMORPHOSIS. Apparently SCS+TRC was more than satisfied with the current status of their only magazine FRONTPAGE, and therefore turned down TROOPER's offer to take on METAMORPHOSIS. The SCS+TRC members are currently involved in the making of a number of magazines at the moment, worth mentioning would be VANDALISM NEWS by VENGEANCE/SCS and OBSESSION by CAVRON/TRC, both released as independent. It could look as if both magazines had no interest to SCS+TRC, and therefore the editors were forced into releasing them under an independent label to avoid being kicked out of the group. * LAXITY, known as one of the most popular musicians in the old VIBRANTS family, may be planning a comeback to the 64 in the near future. He is currently active with his school and playing jazz. * OXYRON is twisting and turning, as most of the members are seeking inspiration on other systems. The brilliant coder and top of the chart holder TTS has started coding on the AMIGA. Meanwhile TTS also stopped all his swapping due to his University engagement. Also AXIS started coding on the AMIGA, while PEACE and PRI started composing on the AMIGA and PEACE will probably also be involved with the PC in the near future as well. The madness continued, as GRAHAM started coding on (get this) the ATARI ST.FALCON. RRR will start paining on the AMIGA as well, and has plans on moving on to the PC and SNES in the near future. To put an end to the list of members exploring new systems, SCRAPPER started on the PC and ASMODIS has plans to start on the AMIGA. All this does not sound too good in the eyes of the most fanatic 64-scene supporter, but rumours proclaim OXYRON to be releasing COMA LIGHT 12 in the near future. Apparently BIZKID (editor of SKYHIGH) is the only member of OXYRON left without any 16-bit plans, but the AMIGA does not necessary have to be the biggest enemy to the 64-scene - that was obvious, as MACHINE quit the scene to join the army (he was getting ready to start on the PC anyway). * An experienced and respected scener has announced his final goodbye to the 64 scene. RICHIE/AVANTGARDE made it official, and after a long career he retires. * ALPHA FLIGHT seem to be having terrible problems with a certain black sheep, this one in the form of a person called LIMIT. Apparently this person has announced to be a member of ALPHA FLIGHT, uploading re-releases under the AFL label to the American boards. According to MAX/AFL, this guy has never been and never will be a member of ALPHA FLIGHT. Supposevely this scandal has something to do with one of the major wars (with DYTEC and SCS+TRC) ALPHA FLIGHT is currently engaged with, but that is only speculations though. ALPHA FLIGHT had other things to worry about this month, as their entire Polish section, consisting of WOZIO, DRUID, TITANIC and SAILOR, left to join up with CHROMANCE. They are said to be only on trial though, which could be a safety move by CHROMANCE due to the fact that the Polish sceners has receaved a reputation of being easy with their group selections lately. CHROMANCE could also announce to have recruited two other members, these in the form of the cracker LORD CRUCIFIER, who had been on a slightly failed trip to GENESIS PROJECT before and will now be trying luck in the Hungarian group. CHROMANCE also invited SYCO/ex.SACRED (a swapper) to join up, which he did. * TRANCE appears to be back in business with the old members RAMIREZ and BIZARRE who both left ALPHA FLIGHT. Whether the magazine A-HEAD will return is still unknown. * The MOTIV 8 American board, IN LIVING COLOR, will have a 7,5 megabyte harddisk installed for wares in the very near future. The sysop, GREGO, seems to have finally given up on getting his equipment back, which was possessed by the American secret service a couple of months ago during a raid which was named THE HOUSTON INSIDENT. Instead, he will be purchasing new equipment soon. * The promising Australian cracking and demo group SHAZAM which was announced dead a while back has reformed with most of what was known as the old SHAZAM. The future plans of SHAZAM is yet unknown though, but we look forward to following them on their ventures. * The BRONX magazine EARTHSHAKE is going through a phase of reformation at the moment, with a brand new outfit in the making coded by ABUSE. BRONX could also announce the capture of a talented musician called AKADEM. He is a member of CAUTION as well though. * ATLANTIS, who is currently working on getting their legendary magazine IMMORTAL FLASH back running again, recruited FREDDIE/VISION (swapper). He will serve for the group on test time to begin with though. That concludes the NEWS JOURNAL for JUNE 1994. We will bid you goodbye as we hold a long and deserving vacation, but hope to return in August with a long and interesting list of summer transfers and newsflashes (get busy out there). You will be able to send us NEWS and REPORTS all summer long though at the following address : THE PULSE MAGAZINE XXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XX XXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Or call our HOTLINE at : +XX XX XX XX XX. We sign off with the obligatory HAVE A NICE SUMMER in the final lines of this chapter as well, and we hope you will use it to get in shape for the kick-off of another exciting fall in the name of the 64 scene. Until August then! DUKE
Monthly Releases
+ MONTHLY RELEASES - THE RELEASE CHARTS + ----------------------------------------------------- By COUNT ZERO of TALENT Trying to keep up the standards is not always that easy, but often earns nothing but complaints. This month was supposed to be, and also turned into, an easy living for me. Just a couple of things went wrong, and no (!) re-releases were made. The only things I want to state before I kick off the usual list of what is HOT and what does NOT rule, are some new ways of earning points. (?) Well, to explain it. On the release of ENTITY, TRC+SCS and AVANTGARDE are SHARING the points. A pretty good move by both parties, showing the scene and its inhabitants that it is not only the hunt for points, but also the friend- ship and collaboration that gives the scene a touch of class, something the C64-scene is specialist in providing. In addition to giving you an insight on some of the things that happend during the month, I want to state that there are two FAKE-RELEASES from ALPHA FLIGHT - which was NOT released by them. The two games AFTERMATH and PARTYGAME are fakes, and will not be included into the charts. It took a while to trace the wares and uncover the mess. This was the major happenings this month. THE US SCENE --------------- It is unbelievable, but absolutely NOTHING happend in the US this month. Maybe at this point we should enter the PD-area in the states (?). Americans and Canadians - PULL YOURSELVES TOGETHER! And now for the MONTHLY RELEASES. ALPHAFLIGHT (Ger, UK, USA, Pol, etc.) (15.0 Points/1.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- They started their excellent month with the fixed version of COSMIC HERO (3.9) by L.K.AVALON, which is a rather plain and simple game. Suddenly by the end of the month, they came up with the also fixed version of LATER (4.0) and MAGIC OF ENDORIA (7.1) by GERMAN DESIGN GROUP. As explained before, the games AFTERMATH and PARTYGAME are not counted, although e.g. PARTYGAME is NO re-release, but after checking back with MARC/AFL, those games were excluded from the MONTHLY RELEASES. AVANTGARDE (Ger, UK, USA, etc.) (9.3 Points/3.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- Starting off with a brilliant preview named LAZYTECH (0.9) they made their way through half of the GAME ON by releasing a fixed version of POLONAESE (4.1) and ENTITY (2.2). Also OXYD (2.1) hit the boards, but was not even supposed to be spread as a first-release (?). CHROMANCE (HUN, USA, etc.) (5.1 Points/6.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- At first look this one was supposed to become a good one for our Hungarian friends, but it turned out to be average. Trying to help us out of our warez-depression, they came up with SMARTRIS PRV (0.5) and FIGHTER OF THE MARSH (4.6). Another one from their drives named COSMIC BUSINESS (-) is not taken into the count-out due to it being BASIC. (See rules last issue.) F4CG (Bel, Pol, USA, etc.) (8.2 Points/4.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- Finally their Polish entry, HAIN, came up with the points he was supposed to kick into this old legend, bringing us 3 games from VERMES/MAREX they made it to the 4th spot this month. MEMO MANIA (3.4) which later on got fixed by CHROMANCE and COLOR MANIA (2.4) started the mania. COLOR MANIA got later on fixed by BYRONICS, but due to their version not working without carts (!) it is resulting in a (-2) for the fixing group. Finally LINGOS (2.5) got spread and remains PAL so far. MOTIV8 (Den, Ger, USA) (2.0 Points/6.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- After last months success, they nearly vanished away for this periods count-out. In the beginning they started with the preview of AVOID'EM (0.4) following later on JUMP KID PRV (0.3) and ARC ANGEL (0.5). Finally they put out FUNBALL PRV (0.8) from OCTABITS, the label of ZODIAC/FLASH INC., which is supposed to be a good one next month. The preview mania just got interrupted by another one from LOGYK SOFTWARE featuring an adventure creator game named THE CRANMORE DIAMOND CAPER (-). TALENT (UK, Ger, USA, Fin) (5.3 Points/5.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- During this months finals, they released BOOM (5.3) from BRAINSTORM SOFT, which is a neat little shoot'em up. Also the 2.0 Version of GODOT (-) was spread by them. (A COOL tool to convert any kind of GFX. I LOVE IT!) TRC+SCS (Hol, Ger, USA, Hun, etc.) (12.8 Points/2.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- The Dutch duo made the best spot in their young history Sofar. CP VERLAG's BOBIX (5.3) was put out by them fixed along with THE FLY 3 which is running PAL/NTSC. Instead of sitting on his butt, even Burglar managed to do a little preview named TRODDLERS (0.7) copyright by ENNO DEVELOPMENTS :) and MISFORTUNE PRV (0.9), another excellent preview. Finally they shared the points with AVANTGARDE for ENTITY (2.2) from NEW ENTRY, (Ed. Not doing this and winning the run would have caused 2 (!) number one spots this issue, so see them as winners aswell. The true gods they are :). TRSI+DYTEC (Ger, UK) (1.3 Points/9.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- Putting out two previews by DYTEC designs was an easy move I guess. BURNING STARS PRV (0.7) and DYNABOYS PRV (0.6) are two nice little pre-releases I would like to see the whole game of. SHAZAM (AUT) (1.9 Points/8.Rank) -------------------------------------------------------------- Nearly forgot them. JETPACK (1.9) was recently put out by them. Keeping the quality low this month. -------------------------------------------------------------- That is about it for the MONTHLY RELEASES. Turn the page over for the charts. And to show you a bit of statistics : 14 FULL GAMES and 10 PREVIEWS was counted this month. Still not an acceptable amount of releases, but for the season it is still enough though. Keep on going, dudes. + CRACKINGGROUPS RELEASECHARTS + ------------------------------------------- Rank Groupname Releases Points -------------------------------------------------------------- 1. ALPHAFLIGHT 3 (1) 15.0 (-0.2) 2. TRC+SCS 3 (2) 12.8 (9.0) 3. AVANTGARDE 3 (4) 9.3 (24.6) 4. F4CG 3 8.2 (-5) 5. TALENT 1 5.3 6. CHROMANCE 1 (2) 5.1 (9.1) 7. MOTIV8 0 2.0 (15.5) 8. SHAZAM 1 1.9 9. TRSI+DYTEC 0 1.3 -------------------------------------------------------------- Some more groups this month. That is nice to see. + CRACKINGROUPS QUALITYCHARTS + ----------------------------------------- Rank Groupname Points -------------------------------------------------------------- 1. TALENT 5.3 2. ALPHAFLIGHT 5.0 3. TRC+SCS 3.7 4. AVANTGARDE 2.8 5. F4CG 2.7 6. CHROMANCE 2.3 7. SHAZAM 1.9 -------------------------------------------------------------- Adding a comment here is rather senseless. Let us instead have a look at what happend towards the fixing business. + FIXINGGROUPS RELEASECHARTS + --------------------------------------- Rank Groupname FIXED Releases Points -------------------------------------------------------------- 1. ALPHAFLIGHT 2 7.9 2. TRC+SCS 2 7.5 3. AVANTGARDE 2 6.3 4. CHROMANCE 1+1 6.1 -------------------------------------------------------------- CHROMANCE got the points for SANTA CLAUS HELPER on the NTSC round which I forgot last month. Their REFLECT does not deserve points, as it did not need a fix at all. Filling another page with the same charts for the quality charts does not make sense as each group has two releases. Just divide the points by two and there you go! I hope everybody is satisfied now. As a result to the last changes BYRONICS already got punished with (-2) although it was definitely their packer. In conclusion, I would like to add to this month : Rely on the things YOU did yourself, not the crappy stuff by others :). That is about it for this months show. Be sure to meet me again after the summer vacation, then featuring more warez than ever. (IIIEKS) - More previews, games and wars! Let us hope this stuff stays interesting until the four horsemen are coming to get us. Signed, COUNT ZERO of TALENT
Satirica
+ SATIRICA - THE AUTOPSY OF THE SCENE + ------------------------------------------------ Now that you have joined us, we can get ready for another edition of the worst pyle of shit written since the time JESUS sat down with a couple of bankers and financed his new book. You have entered the domains of SATIRICA, the place where anything can happen - and do happen. This is where we have no restraints, but a vivid imagination. The stories included in SATIRICA are pure fiction and based on a satiric state of mind. This was not written to offend any of you, but to pass on a smile in these trying times. Most of what is written in SATIRICA is based on the actual news, then turned around 180 degrees to put together a totally crazy and obscure story. I hope you like it! I (DUKE) would like to send my most humble thanks to : BOD, for being the flexible kind of guy he is! POWERPLANT, for being so secretive that I could make up anything about him and everyone would believe it! RICHIE, for leaving the scene and giving me the kind of inspiration that I started suffering from writing cramp! * Another scandal has hit the royal BOD family, this time revealed by PLAYING ROMEO, who was able to announce that BOD was still active - playing with his toys. Apparently he has put his scene-activities away to use more time with his LEGO and PLAYMOBILE. BOD claims this is just another attempt to make him look bad, but when he interrupted the interview to steal a passing boys teddy-bear, he pretty much revealed his passion on the spot. TOYS'R'US told PLAYING ROMEO they were planning on signing a four year contract with BOD, as their new mascot. This happend when POWERPLANT was seen playing with toys from OBSCURE FANTASIES, and then fired. * AIRWOLF who is currently a Genesis PROJECT featured on VANITY FAIR stripped naked, claiming to be the male version of the now infamous DEMI MOORE photo taken during her pregnancy. It is difficult however to spot the likeness in AIRWOLFs picture, but the stomach does show a slight resem- blance. AIRWOLF stated in a released note "What's wrong with being full-bodied?". But eventhough the picture of AIRWOLF made world-wide horror, it managed to cut him through to a nice little deal with ALIEN-LIFE-FORM, who signed him on as their new HEATH-FOOD-SUCKS columnist. * The American sysop POL POT figures in the latest edition of the GUINESS RECORDS book holding a brand new record. The disciplin of being able to smoke the most cigarettes in the shortest amount of time was broken, when POL POT managed to light and smoke 265 cigarettes in just 2 minutes. This is an amazing record, but when POL POT was asked about his record he stated - "I didn't know anyone was counting?" and "I need a cigarette". * RICHIE/AVANTGARDE gave the C64 scene a final goodbye on a conference last night at 3:00 AM. The cause of his leave, was that he wanted to concentrate more on his job as a promising roofer. RICHIE claimed it may not be the most glamerous job, and it most definitely will not attract any money or woman, but atleast it is a job that matches his IQ. RICHIE stated jobs like that are hard to find these days where computers and machines has practically taken over just about everything. But fortunately roofing is still around to give people like me a reason to live, RICHIE said. Roofing has been in my family for centuries, it would be stupid of me to ruin that record. * Meanwhile at the slum of ANTICHRIST and SORCERESS "You hurt me and you made me cry. But if you leave me, I will surely die, bla, bla". + NATURES CORNER - WATCHING FAT WOMEN UNDRESS + ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to another issue of the glamorous NATURES CORNER hosted by your favourite gardener POWERPLANT of LEGEND. (Instant applause by WESTBAM) Thank you, I love you too. This month I have had to dig down deep to find material for this edition. But I managed to find a decent movie to discuss nonetheless. PWP : Welcome RICHIE. You have just put out RICHIE - LOSER which is currently showing in MALAYSIA. Where did you come up with the title? Must have took you ages to come up with anything as fitting as this! RICHIE : Well, I recently watched ACE VENTURA - DETECTIVE to find some good material for my up-coming movie, and the title of that movie gave me some inspiration. PWP : What is the movie about then? RICHIE : It is a sort of a DOLPHIN having sex with DINGOS kind of a movie. It is great fun, I am sure you would love it! THE MOVIE CORNER hosted by AJ/TRC of FRONTPAGE -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the post-office. This month we will countdown the favourite movies in the scene this month. Join me every month for a look at the big titles out in a store near you NOW! 10. BILL AND TED'S BOGUS JOURNEY. Starring MOREN and BURGLAR/SUCCESS. 9. STOP OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT. Starring DISHY/VISION. 8. SOAPDISH. Starring ALPHA FLIGHT and DYTEC. 8. THE FISHER KING. Starring KING FISHER/TRIAD. 6. FAR AND AWAY. Starring ANTICHRIST/G*P. Those are the titles from 10 through 6. Now we will turn the table and look at the top 5. 5. OH, WHAT A NIGHT. Starring JAZZCAT/LEGEND. 4. MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN. Starring RICHIE/ex.AVANTGARDE. 3. THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK. Starring AYCEE/TSM and SORCERESS/G*P. 2. DEAD AGAIN. Starring 2000AD. And the UNBEATABLE number ONE for JUNE. 1. PROBLEM CHILD 2. Starring HAIN/F4CG. This has been the MOVIE CORNER presented to you by ACTION JACKSON/TRC, editor of FRONTPAGE. Join us in AUGUST - when we will reveal a new list of fantastic HAVE TO GO WATCH THEM BECAUSE MY MONEY ARE BURNING A HOLE IN MY POCKET movies. * CREST had set their minds on releasing a new demo this year, but at the moment it appears most of the CREST members has put it all off for indefinite. We tried to get a hold of GOLDRUSH, the leader of CREST, to get some information about the coming demo, but he was not at home, but at his neighbours playing TRAP THE CLAM. We then called up DRAX, but he knew very little about the demo, let alone if it was ever going to be released. Then we called up MADUPLEC, but he hung up on us after we mentioned the word "DEMO". * OXYRON appears to be facing the same problem as CREST, although it is of a slighly different nature. TTS claims he refuses to code on a demo of which number no one can remember anyway. He recently stated to UNLIMITED-LIFE Magazine - "We stopped counting on the COMA LIGHT series, so now we have to start all over". OXYRON might show up with a brand new demo, but first they need to investigate their talents on a billion of other computers first - which by the way might take a while. * And now we would like to take a moments silence to show RICHIE (who just left the scene) our respect and goodbye! BAAAAEEEEELALALALALALALALLABABABABABALALALA LALAALABABABABABAHALALALALALALAGAGAGAGAGAGA. Thank you! + SUPREME-SKINHEAD RETURNS - ISSUE # 3 + -------------------------------------------------- Welcome back to another humorous episode with fun and hideous laughter in the name of the TWIN HEADS. This edition was brought to you by THE WIG AND SHAVING-GELLO CO. We join JOCHEN and HARTMUT in this episode, as they have just returned home from the SINGLE MEN OF THE 90's bar. "Phew, that was a close one" said JOCHEN and walked into the bathroom to polish his balled spot. "DAMN IT - a stupid bird has blotted on my most shinny spot. Go and get some shaving- gello from the BALLED'R'US shop HARTMUT". "Oh man, why do I always have to do the errands around here?" cried HARTMUT in his typical girly type of voice "Oh stop winning you stupid skinhead, and do what I say before I set you on fire" shouted JOCHEN in a deep voice. On the way to the BALLED'R'US, HARTMUT picked up a couple of animal-sex movies - using the fake ID he stole from an old woman he robbed the other day. "Ah yes, this will do wonders for me when I get home" said HARTMUT in a jolly tone, and danced his way down the street. There stood the shop - the HOLLY TEMPLE as JOCHEN used to call it. HARTMUT entered the BALLED'R'US store, and greeted the priest who served the counter. "Ah yes, fine fine skinhead come to my store, yes. Welcome, what may I, the priest of shinny spots, do for you young skinhead?" said the priest. "Hi father. Well, I need a bottle of shaving gello, the usual formula you know" said HARTMUT. "Oh, and I also think I will have one of those SCRAPE AND WIN plates" HARTMUT said silently. "AAAAH, YEEEES, SCRAPE AND WIN, very very good game. I once heard about a guy who bought a plate, and won a million dollars because the plate had three balled heads on it" shouted the priest, so that everyone looked at HARTMUT in a funny way (same procedure as always). HARTMUT paid the priest with his last fake coins, and went out the door in a rush - just incase the priest would notice. HARTMUT was real excited about the SCRAPE and WIN plate. He knew, that if this plate had three balled people on it, he would be able to buy all the RIGHT SAID FRED albums, and maybe even afford a woman afterwards. It was an exciting moment, and when HARTMUT was about to scrape the plate, he heard a shout from down the street. - TO BE CONTINUED.. (Can you stand the excitement?) + THE BALLED AND UNSHAVED - THE REAL WORLD + ------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to another episode of the infamous meeting of chosen lebracons from the scene. This is the real world, or to put it another way - it is the world of the BALLED and UNSHAVED. This month we invited the following geezers. RICHIE/ex.AVANTGARDE CROSSFIRE/MOTIV 8 CAVRON/TRC+SCS JCH/VIBRANTS We will begin with a short introduction speech. We at SATIRICA are not to blaim for any psychological damage that may strike the visitors of our CEMETERY in ICELAND. We therefore urge you not to judge us on the outcome of the next lebracons. RICHIE about the meeting, "Oye mates. It was a jolly fine cemetary I'd say. Too bad the roof didn't need any fixing, I would have been more than happy to have done it for free. But then you might have called me an ass-kisser, which I am not. BTW: I love you all, I really do". CROSSFIRE about the meeting, "I have to say, it was nice to get a break from my home town MONDELSTRUP. It is not very often I get to go outside of my village, and when I do - boy do I pick the right place to go. love cemetaries, must have something to do with all the groups I have been in and barried. Ah, It kind of makes me think of my younger years when I was a boy-scout in MONDELSTRUP - but that is another story". CAVRON about the meeting, "Hello there motherfuckers. It was a fucking cool place to be invited man, I fucking loved it man. I just wish CROSSFIRE would have left me alone, not trying to toss me in a hole and kick dirt over me, but I guess it was the right place for things like that. Anyway, fuck you all, and may the fucking fuck be with you. Gotta love my vocabulary". JCH about the meeting, "Just one question. What do I have to do with the other three nut-cases stationed at the cemetary? But okay, I am game. Atleast It gave me an opportunity to get a couple of days off at the post-office. I think I have said all there is to say. (Hey, can I go now? Thanks)". The Balled and The Unshaved was sponsored by Iceland AIR * A day in the life of a young newcomer who has just been told he has got the right to vote in magazines.... Boy, really. Well, I think I will vote for IKARI then, they are pretty good. But I just cannot seem to remember if they were a demo group or.. hmm.. I will just put them under the musician chart, that will do. The votesheet said no one cared who I voted for anyway, so I think I will put my dad under the fixer charts, because he once fixed my bike when no one else could do it. Yeah, that ought to do it. Hmm, what's this one. Best board? Hmm, oh, I know it, the DEVIL SKATEBOARD, that one has to be the best of the lot. Hey, I am pretty good at this, I can be elite, I seem to know everything already. I guess this is what they call being a natural at voting, perhaps I should put down for that advertisement and join that group TALENT. Oh darn it, that will never do, the add is from England, and I have no wish to move all the way to England to join the group. Besides, my parents wouldn't allow it. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything in this day and age.... All of a sudden, a nuclear bomb crashed on the roof of the young newcomers house and blew him away!!! Meanwhile RICHIE says, "Bombs has no respect for roofs". * CROSSFIRE is involved with what could easily be described as the biggest scandal in his home village MONDELSTRUP since the time the mayor mistook his head for a doughtnut and ate it. According to the village police MONDEL-VICE, the village squatter CROSSFIRE raped a female weasel outside the police headquarters. According to CROSSFIRE, he mistook the weasel for a dingo, who JAZZCAT had been speaking very highly of in terms of finding the means to having the highest possible sexual pleasure. CROSSFIRE is facing to be grounded up to two days, but he claims it was worth it. CROSSFIRE has already booked himself on the next flight to AUSTRALIA where he will be attending the annual SEX WITH DINGOS AND OTHER STUFF barbeque held by JAZZCAT. -------------------------------------------------------------- That concludes this months edition of SATIRICA, I hope you have enjoyed this one as well. Please do remember, I mean no harm, I just want to put people down! SATIRICA is the original satiric chapter. You might face some cheap imitations out there when passing through the world of magazines, but it all comes down to one - SATIRICA. YA GOTTA LOVE ME! DUKE
Global Report
+ GLOBAL REPORT - INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDANCE + -------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to another edition of GLOBAL REPORT. This month we return with the usual informative articles and reports related to the scene with important backgrounds. This month we big a huge report on one of the major scandals currently being discussed throughout the world as one of the most contriversial topics this year. The main groups in the spotlight is DYTEC and ALPHA FLIGHT, and the cause of everything is the game LEMMINGS. Be sure to read this exclusive report on one of the most contriversial events in the scene today. GLOBAL REPORT also return with the popular opinion polls, this time expanding the target group, giving everyone the opportunity to take part in our future polls. Read more about the opinion polls in this months report. The American group CODERZ has been through a difficult period with their leader and front-figure LUCIFER being put to jail by the secret service. Read more about the current situation of CODERZ in GLOBAL REPORT. GLOBAL REPORT is hosted by General Editor DUKE. + THE PULSE MAGAZINE - WORLD-WIDE OPINION POLLS + ------------------------------------------------------------- We return with a new set of opinion polls, this time with a different motive though. We believe opinion polls should be made to reach an answer about the opinion of the general scener about a certain topic. In the past we have only used bulletin boards to collect the answers for our polls, which we admit was not fair on the heaps of sceners who actually do not own a modem (about 95 percent of the scene more or less). Therefore we give YOU the opportunity to take part in our brand new and world-wide opinion poll, in which YOU will have the opportunity to be a part of important answers and debates being made. Beginning this edition, we will list a set of new opinion polls every month in GLOBAL REPORT. The answers will then be listed in SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT, and will result in a lively debate with possible guests for comments about the results. You will be able to send you answers (write number of poll followed by the letter of your choice) to anyone with any relation to THE PULSE MAGAZINE or REGINA. We will accept the answers no later than the 25th of JULY. The opinion polls will now follow, we hope you will enjoy answering them. * POLL # 1 ---------- What in YOUR opinion is the most important factor in terms of helping the C64-scene stay alive? A. NONE OF THE ABOVE + THE ALPHA FLIGHT vs. DYTEC SCANDAL + ----------------------------------------------- The main-discussion this month on the major US-boards was about whether or not ALPHA FLIGHT re-cracked DTC+TRSI's version of the latest multi-filed full-pricer LEMMINGS. But before we take a look at DYTEC's evidence, we would like to raise the question, that of the low rate possibility that this is true, then how come DYTEC+TRSI supposively had the original 3 days before ALPHA FLIGHT, and yet, ALPHA FLIGHT was STILL the first group to put it out on the Ameri- can boards, ALTHOUGH DYTEC+TRSI could easily have up- loaded THEIR version, and since we in the staff of THE PULSE feel CERTAIN, that they would not miss the 1st release on the game of the century if they could get it, we still blunder in the fact, that AFL has been accused of re-cracking it, even- though THEY were first with it. But by all means. Let us take a quick peek at DYTEC's eviden- ce and add what the AFL-members had to say. D=DYTEC Spokesman (Little Big Man) A=ALPHA FLIGHT Spokesman (Whole group!) --------------------------------------------- D:The levels on the disks has the same order. A:This is the original file-order, just like it is on the original. ..continued! ------------ D:Their version has the same trainer-options, only a few lame ones added. A:If you train a game, then you always try to train everything, you will always have the same trainers, because the main- code is the SAME on every original. So OFCAUSE you will always find the same routines!!! D:Their version has the same decrunch routine at the same address. A:This is NORMAL, when you remove the loader from the origi- nal and just replace it with the level-decrunchers routines and since we used the same level-squeezer, the loader was to be identical, just like the length of each file. D:Their version also contains the same in-game routines. A:Same thing, as where you have to insert the trainer routines into the main-code. D:Their version has the same kind of disk-style. A:Everybody does this with the directory of their spread disk, so how can you call us re-crackers, just because of some seq-files? According to ALPHA FLIGHT, DYTEC is doing this to gain at- tention at their costs and that their evidence is simply lies and speculations. -Next Page!- COMMENT FROM THE STAFF ----------------------------- Seeing how ALPHA FLIGHT is chased on the boards, we in the staff have a hard time believing they would do a thing like this, and since all the proofs DYTEC has come up with seems all to be on very shakey ground, we in the staff feel, it is our duty to agree with ALPHA FLIGHT in this case. We have a very hard time believing DYTEC's story over AFL's story, so THEREFORE. We also think this is just a publicity-stunt from DYTEC to gain attention on behalf of ALPHA FLIGHT. If you have a special case or scandal you want for us to investigate and analyse - simply send us all the material sorounding the case - and we will print our result. Signed, CROSSFIRE This report was written after ALPHA FLIGHT had released their view on this scandal. But it seems the saga will go on for a bit longer than this, because right after AFL had released their note - a new one appeared from the DYTEC members, showing new evidence in this case. This note will now follow in GLOBAL REPORT. LEMMINGS - THE REAL STORY (PART II). ----------------------------------------- Recently we got a letter from our "friends" in ALPHA FLIGHT. They tried to disprove that they RE-CRACKED our LEMMINGS version, but they did not disprove any of our FACTS! Therefore we in DYTEC will now PROVE again, but now in detail, that ALPHA FLIGHT (SUPREME) RE-CRACKED our version of LEMMINGS. (By the way, LITTLE BIG MAN and I (PROTON) made all the work on the original, so we are more than enraged about the lame behaviour from the AFL guys). Let us start with the level order. The order on the ALPHA FLIGHT version does not look like the order on the original (ups. It looks like the order in OUR disk). Isn't that quite amazing? AFL got the 1 SIDED original right before any other group, so they should know the order on the original disks better than anyone else (We also released this version without levelpacking, and - No, nothing on the disk. They should keep a look on this release, and note the correct order of the levels). The next comments from these "cool guys" were about the TRAINER-ROUTINES. Sure the maincode of a game is the same every time. But in this case exists ONLY ONE ROUTINE to decrease the amount of available LEMMINGS. If you change these routines, all LEMMINGS are trained at the same time. Therefore LBM coded a SPECIAL routine to check our which LEMMING is trained and which one is not. This routine is located at DFA0 (I still wrote that in our last file. But it seems ALPHA FLIGHT do not understand), atleast he changed a little part of the original trainer-routine to work correct- ly with the new routine. Is it not amazing to see, that LITTLE BIG MAN and SUPREME (two persons in different places without any relations) coded the same routine and placed these routines at the same memory position, and changed the maincode at the same position. In my opinion, this is down right impossible. No way. This is only possible if ALPHA FLIGHT re-cracked our version. (Disprove that by saying it is still possible, and you are not only lame, but stupid). There is no end to this. ALPHA FLIGHT also wrote that if you replace the original loader by your own loader (and if this is the same as in our version) it has to look exactly identical. Yes, this is right. But why have you changed the load effect (for a better locking?). Anyway, this is not the main point. The point is, that I (PROTON) changed some of the game- routines to work correctly with the loader. I have also changed some routines that requests the changing of the disk (this was necessary because the last two files of each rating are on the first disk. So I had to check whether it is one of the files or not). I have also included some memory- transfers and all the routines were added to the original code by myself and (maybe you know what follows now) surprise - all the routines are in the ALPHA FLIGHT version. But they are not unused, no, they always managed the right work. No, this is not amazing, this is simply another FACT for this RE-CRACK. Now I will bring you some statistics. At memory location CDF2 in the original, there are datas. I checked for the last two files, and if it is one of them, I start a request for the first disk side A. "SUPREME's routine" looks like my one!?! (But why?). At memory location CFAO in the original, there are some loader code. I INIT the loader with the current level-name, and jump to the level-desqueezer. Whoops. "SUPREME's routine" this time again looks exactly like my routine!?! I can mention, that they used the same position for the level-name (not the original position..) and for the trainer- bytes (no wonder they use our trainer routine and so they have to change nothing there). Okay, I hate this, so I will stop here the endless chain of proofs and let you decide whether ALPHA FLIGHT re-cracked the DYTEC version of LEMMINGS or not. But remember: our mail-version was released just one and a half week before ALPHA FLIGHT presented us their version. Now we brought you the best proofs you can get for a re- crack (the personal style of each cracker is different, only that makes the scene what it is) and if these are no proofs, then there are no proofs anyway. Finally, it is sad that a group with a relatively good name in the 64-scene act like ALPHA FLIGHT and re-crack a game. But why DYTEC? Because it is a small group and a not so wellknown one as of yet. We call this lame, the lamest thing a group can do. But this is a good example for you to decide which is important for you. A name or good quality, and now you know who made the quality - most definitely not AFL (it seems they are not able to make any good versions. Just take a look at the GAMERS GUIDE, and count the BAD smilies pointing at their games, and you will realise the truth about their abilities). So realise the truth about LEMMINGS, and never forget ALPHA FLIGHT re-cracked one time. But I am sure this was not their latest re-crack. Those were the words from DYTEC about the scandal. We expect to hear the reaction to this from ALPHA FLIGHT very soon, and will of course keep you updated about the procedings in this case. Incase you have anything important to add to this case, please write or call us : THE PULSE MAGAZINE XXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XX XXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX +XX-XXXXXXXX THE FATE OF CODERZ by ONYX/CODERZ ------------------------------------------- I am sure everyone has heard about LUCIFER getting busted by the S.S., but most of you do not know what is going on with his case, and also what is up with CODERZ. Well, I am here to fill you in. LUCIFER'S FATE : A few months ago LARRY's house was raided by the United States Secret Service and all his computer equipment consisting of notebooks, address books and various other items (which had nothing to do with hacking) were taken. LARRY was questioned about various things, and after the searcg and seizure he was taken to HARRIS COUNTY JAIL, but not for hacking. He was arrested for 'Motion to revoke probation', and is going before the judge tomorrow to find out what they are going to do. He currently has no federal charges on him, and by the way that the S.S. operate, he probably will not be charged with anything. CODERZ FATE : Since LARRY was busted, and PHIBERCOM going down CODERZ has been shut down for the time being. It may or may not reform. If it is reformed, it will be in the IBM scene seeing how SUB ZERO and myself have since switched to the beamer. I could have tried to keep it going, but did not see the point. We had no HQ, and I had no way of calling LD to find another. More than likely CODERZ will not be back. If anyone wants more information about all this, then leave me E-MAIL on ILC II at XXX - XXX - XXXX , # 26. I would like to wish GREG and SUSIE good luck on getting their stuff back. Also, a huge thank you to MITCH KAPOR head of EFF for helping people fight the S.S. for taking their computer equipment. If anyone wants to learn more about MITCH KAPOR's efforts, grab a book called 'THE HACKERS CRACKDOWN' written by BRUCE STERLING! COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR ------------------------------- Since this letter was written by ONYX, we got an updated story on LUCIFER's situation aswell as the intire HOUSTON INCIDENT. Read more about this, exclusive to the BOARD REPORT. That is a wrap for this edition of GLOBAL REPORT. If you have anything important or informative to tell the scene about, please do send us articles or any other material and we will print it if it is of a serious nature.
Board Report
+ THE MONTHLY BOARD REPORT + ------------------------------------ This month we have several things for you. We start off with one of the traditional board-reviews, and this month we have gone out of our way and put a European board on the spot, namely -D O M I N I C-, since we thought it would be appro- priate when it is European headquaters for THE PULSE MAG. Following will be a very recent update of the scandals going on in Houston/Texas for the last half year. Updated in the last seconds before release with big thanks to SUSIEUZI/ex.ILS. But without further due, let us kick off and investigate this wonderous world we call the modem-scene. + D O M I N I C + ---------------- THE PULSE MAGAZINE and MOTIV8 European Headquaters! ------------------------------------------------------------ +XX/XXXX-XXXX ---------------- If you have contributions, that might be of interest for THE PULSE MAGAZINE, please leave e-mail to user # 2. -Next Page!- + D O M I N I C + ----------------- Technical facts.. ----------------- Sysop: TRICKET/MOTIV8 Co-Sysop: CROSSFIRE/MOTIV8 Online since: February 17th 1993 Software: CROSSFIRE Modded C-Base V2.4 Hardware: 1 x 1541for main program and mail 1 x 1541 for posts. 2 x 1581 for the latest wares. 24oo Baud Cardinal Modem. System running on a C128,with a C64 as backup. Remark, that a harddisk could EASILY be installed, but it is against our policy to have wares older than a month on the board, and with the few wares getting released these days, we decided that 2 1581's was more than enough to hold the latest, and what is the point of a 20 meg HD, besides using it to show off? + THE PULSE - The One You Can Rely On! + -Next Page!- + D O M I N I C + ---------------- The story.. ----------- The board had been planned for years before the sysop, TRICKET, at the time leader of DOMINATORS, finally DID put it online on February 17th 1993. It was DOMINATORS WHQ until the group died in the summer of 1993 and TRICKET joined up with VISUAL REALITY, and so his board became VR-HQ. Everything ran fine for approx. half a year when the system was suddenly formatted by the sysop from another board (read THE PULSE/Dec'93 for more about that!). The board was down for about a month and TRICKET quit the scene, but only for 2 weeks when he decided to put his board back up. For starters it was an INDEPENDANT BBS, but it was only a matter of time, before MOTIV8 was found by him and some EPIC-members and his board became EHQ for them. His board was put back up officially on January 1st 1994 and on January 5th, MOTIV8 was founded. Finally it also became HQ for THE PULSE MAGAZINE on April 18th, 1994. In the beginning, the board ran on UCBBS v1.3, but soon after VISUAL REALITY took over, it changed into Cyborg Modded C- Base, but there was a lot of problems with this, and when it finally got formatted, TRICKET got fed up. -Next Page!- ..continued! ------------ ..when he decided to put his board back online, CROSSFIRE, at the time member of EPIC, supplied him with the Crossfire Modd- ed C-Base v2.0, which was updated recently, and gets improv- ed all the time. The crashing problems that was with Cyborg Modded C-Base is not to be found here, since the Crossfire Modded C-Base is NEARLY 100% crash-free. Also the back- door has been fixed (NOT removed though!) in a way, so that a certain lowlife cannot enter and format the system again. The board contains 6 PUBLIC subboards, and a couple of PRI- VATE ones, and has 3 PUBLIC wares-drives for the latest, and the latest ONLY! The board has been called EUROPE's # 1 by MANY of the users and considering the record that has been set it sounds rea- sonable. One day the board received 35 (!!!) calls and had 176 (!!!) posts written, in ONE day, that was! Still, that was an extremely action-filled day. Generally, the board recieves approx. 23 calls a day and has about 90 posts written per day. As far as our record goes, NO other European board can com- pete with that, nor can any of the European boards compete with the speed of the wares on the drives. -Next Page!- As of now, the board has a total of 92 users, all people who has applied since the board went back online in January, and all of them is wellknown faces. Top groups such as LEGEND, TALENT, F4CG, ALPHA FLIGHT, AVANTGARDE, CHROMANCE, DEMONIX, PSI, GENESIS PROJECT and others are here. There is a few simple rules that has to be followed at the board, but everything will be explained and the rules ARE very simple. So go ahead right now and call : + D O M I N I C + ----------------- +XX/XXXX-XXXX ---------------- Open 24 hours a day! --------------------- 3oo/12oo/24oo Baud! --------------------- ATTENTION! ------------ Please make sure you got the right number. A lot of 2nd-rate magazines has been printing A LOT of variants of the number, all which is WRONG!!! -DOMINIC- changed to the number above as of February 1st, 1994! PLEASE BEAR THAT IN MIND.. BOARD-REPORT ---------------- The boards - The place everyone wants to be, but where so few survive.. Due to popular demand we will this month turn another page in the saga which has been known as THE HOUSTON INCIDENT. -------------------------- Read this chapter, and you will get your horizon widened with the full story of what happened when SUSIEUZI and GREGO, both ex.ILS members at the time, was busted back in late '93, and although the case is 6 months old, it is still running in full gear. Also, at the 3rd of March this year, the police picked up LUCIFER/CODERZ/AVANTGARDE at his home and nobody, except for SUSIEUZI has heard from him ever since. When LUCIFER was busted and his board PHIBERCOM, which, at the time was CODERZ and CHROMANCE hq was taken down. A lot of myths was made up, and only FEW of them had any truth to them - Read this and YOU will know the true story. Thanks goes out to SUSIEUZI fpr all her informations online! + THE PULSE + Noone Comes Closer To Perfection! The LUCIFER/COD/AVT case.. ------------------------------- On March 4th 1994 his house was raided by the US Secret Service, and Larry was jailed for not paying fines ordered Parole Department for some trouble he got into some years ago, that was NOT computer-related. When the Secret Ser- vice came to his house, they ran a check on him and discov- ered, that he had violated his Parole order, and he was taken to the county jail for that. Today, May 26th 1994, Lucifer was taken to court and had his Parole revolked. This means he has to stay in jail and serve the remainder of his senten- ce, which was 5 YEARS!!! He did however get credit for the time he had already served before, plus the time he spend on waiting for the court-date. He will be eligible to ask the Pa- role-board to grant him Parole again (let him out with the promise to pay his fines, etc.) or just to let him out on time served in approximately 8 weeks. In the meantime, he will have served enough time that he can now "work" in the jail and get credit for it. He is doing so, as of THIS week, so he MAY be able to petition for release in August or September. This was the absolute latest and final happenings in this case. To summon it all up, LUCIFER is NOT (!!!) in jail for hacking, but because of violating his parole. Big difference, but ru- mours was spreading too fast, so we had to clear this out now. The full SUSIEUZI/GREGO story.. ---------------------------------- Due to popular demand, we caught up with SUSIEUZI and asked her to give us the full story of exactly WHAT has REALLY been going on for the last half year, from when they were "busted", till now. THE PULSE MAGAZINE now gives the word to SUSIEUZI.. They came into my home on November 30th 1993 and took all my computer equipment, most of my software and many other per- sonal items, including my bible and books of no connection whatsoever to the computer. This was done by the Harris County District Attorney's office of the state of Texas. They could not, or WOULD not, produce the search-warrant affadavit stating what they were here to search for. No charges has ever been filed in the case, and atleast I have no certain idea of what this is about. My criminal attorney has not been able to get a copy of the affadavit, nor have I. We DID have one brief meeting with the special investigator from the D.A.'s office, which was ME, my criminal attorney (I hired one in case charges were filed, which they never HAVE been!) and an attorney from an organi- zation called THE ELECTRONIC FRONTIER FOUNDATION which ..is based in Washington D.C. This group was formed several years ago by the man who coded LOTUS 1, 2 and 3 for the PC, and they are a civil rights group to insure the freedoms of computer-users are not violated. I contacted them right after this whole thing occoured, and they put me in touch with a local lawyer, who is also an EFF- member. All we were able to ascertain from that meeting was that the District Attorney's Office is STILL trying to get some sort of charge filed, but as of yet, they have not done so. The only other thing we were able to accomplish in that meet- ing was to get the investigator to agree, that I would at some point get my system and belongings back. From THAT point, not much, if ANYTHING, has happened in the case. A couple of days ago, I spoke with Steve Jackson from Steve Jackson Games in Austin, Texas. A few years ago, HIS board was confiscated by the United States' Secret Service in a SIMILAR situation with NO charges filed. He eventually, with the help of the EFF, filed a lawsuit against the US Government citing several federal laws which he felt had been violated, and he WON THE CASE!!! This set the scene for another board-operator to use these laws to recover systems taken by law enforcement agencies. -Next Page!- He was very helpful to me, and has given me several new ave- nues to pursue. The affadavit allowing them to search and telling what they are searching for, must, according to Texas law, be a matter of public record. This means that ANYONE should be allowed to go to the county clerk's office and obtain a copy of it. I went there and they were UNABLE TO LOCATE this damn piece of paper. Well, another point in this whole history that bothers me al- most as much - I think it is pretty shabby that the majority of the scene people have threated me like the plague since this occoured, ESPECIALLY in the lights of the fact that no charges has been set. I can understand it is because people takes cautions, but there is a difference between CAUTION and to ALIENATION! I wanted to kinda say thanks to a couple of people, who have NOT stuck their noses up at us after this 'busting' occoured, especially thanks for the guys in MOTIV8 and to DERBYSHIRE RAM/AVANTGARDE for being a real pal to both Grego and me. Feel free to contact me for some mailtrading, my address should be findable in the BLACKBOARD chapter. /SusieUzi (ex.ILS) You have reached the end of another board-report.. THE PULSE MAGAZINE will now take a well-deserved summer- vacation, but as THE PULSE is the only reliable magazine left in this scene, we WILL ofcause be back in two months with the August-edition... ...Miss us! ..and finally, have a good summer.. ...I know WE will !!!
Profile
+ PROFILE - THE JUNE INTERVIEW + --------------------------------------- Welcome to the JUNE edition of PROFILE. Last month we had a very popular interview with METAL of CAMELOT, so now it is time for us to bring you an exclusive interview with one of the sceners within the cracking-scene. This month we invited an experienced scener, but in a scene a person who is just getting started. He made a name for himself leading the negotiations to one of the most interesting cooperation in the scene this year. The interview was conducted by SPLATTERHEAD, and edited by DUKE. Thanks must go to COUNT ZERO for helping out on getting this interview through in time. But for our Profile this June month, please welcome FATMAN of DYTEC and TRSI. [S] : SPLATTERHEAD [F] : FATMAN/DYTEC+TRSI [S] Hello there LARS. I know you have already been in the 64 scene for quite some time, but for those who still have not heard about you, could you please give them some information about the person behind the handle 'FATMAN' and tell us a bit about the time you have spent in the scene. [F] Okay. Here we go : Real name : XXXX XXXXXXXXXX. Live in :BERLIN. Age : 22. Born : 08.04.1972 Weight : 106KG. Height : 179 CM. Hobbies : Computers, Billard, Dartand Cinema. Hardware : 5 C64's, 1 C128,1 PC, 1 AMIGA 1200, SNES+SWC, MEGA-DRIVE II and a GAMEBOY. Food : Chinese food and MC Donalds (Burger King sucks). Drinks : Coke, Ginand Tonic. I got my first C64 back in 1987, but till 1989 I was not very active. In the middle of 1990 I joined up with DYTEC as an original supplier. [S] You have been in cooperation with TRSI for some time now, who was/were the person(s) behind the fusion and did you have any special reasion to do it? [F] I knew IRATA and many of the TRSI-PC-AMIGA guys since way back. You already know that I am a member of TRSI/FAITH on the PC, and we have often talked about the scene. IRATA saw a lot of our work, and he noticed we had a good set of crackers. Due to the shortage of crackers in TRSI at the time, with most of them leaving the scene and joining up with other groups, they had a general interest in us. One day I asked IRATA what he thought about a cooperation, and he spoke with the other TRSI members about it, and most of them agreed, so that was how it all happened. [S] What can we expect from this cooperation? Will there be any changes from you, and have you considered kicking any of your members due to the largeness of the group at this stage? [F] You can expect a lot of first-releases and a high quality level. Up to now I have provided the DYTEC originals, and treated the crackers to work. I am supposed to go on with this, and most likely will. Up to now no one has left DYTEC in result of the cooperation! [S] What was your first reaction when the cooperation became a reality? [F] Well, I actually forced the cooperation, so I will not be able to answer this one. My opinion is the best way for both sides on this topic! [S] Could you please give the readers a bit of background information about DYTEC throughout the years. [F] DYTEC was built up in the end of 1989 by 8 people. By the way, the name DYTEC is a short for DYNAMIC TECHNOLOGIES. In 1989 we were nearly the only professional (or serious if you may) group in the former East Germany. In 1990 the wall came down, and this was the event that took us beyond and into the real scene. Through the years, the members changed, but we have always tried to keep our quality standard. In the last couple of years, I believe we have forced our organisation to work a lot faster without loosing our quality level, and so we all of a sudden became known through our contacts. [S] Will the DYTEC party of the cooperation perhaps show up on the American boards now then? [F] I have always uploaded our releases on AMIGA boards using a C64-conference, and lately I have started calling some genuine 64 boards in the states. [S] About your membership of TRSI on the AMIGA. What is your opinion on what scene is the best (the AMIGA contra the C64 scene)? [F] First and foremost I am a member of TRSI/FAITH on the PC, and I refuse to say that any scene is better or worse than the other, but I must admit the C64 scene is the one with the most fun at the moment. Naturally there are a lot of differences between the scenes, at first of course the hardware (hehe). The worst about the AMIGA is that there is only ONE first release, and in the following days you have to install a fix or two, etc. On the C64 there are always put out a lot of different versions of each game, this way giving the user a golden opportunity of choosing the one he likes the most. [S] Some of the TRSI members decided to leave the scene after the TRISTAR and RSI merge on the 64 (POSDNUGS, PSYCHOBILLY, MR.PRESIDENT among others). What do you think the reason was for this? [F] I do not know the individual decision of all the people who left RSI before the merge, but as far as I know then POSDNUGS is still active! [S] If the cooperation for some reason should end, what would you (and the rest of DYTEC) do. Would you stay in DYTEC or would you maybe join up with TRSI or maybe another group? [F] This one is simple to answer. If the cooperation should end, what I of course do not hope, DYTEC will go back to doing what it did before the cooperation. We are all still very proud of the DYTEC history, and would miss it if we left the group. But in any event, I think it is really lame to change your group as if it was clothes! [S] Well, I most certainly hope we managed to clear some aspects concerning the cooperation TRSI+DYTEC now. Let us put an end to this interview, perhaps with you greeting some of your friends and contacts maybe? [F] Sure. Greetings to all my contacts and friends : The good old DYTEC crew, everyone one TRSI (especially regards to : IRATA, SCAT, ANARCHY, POSDNUGS, MIDFIT). Also greetings to COUNT ZERO/TALENT, REDROCK+SPERMBIRD/EXCESS, JACK ALIEN/AVANTGARDE, SPLATTERHEAD+MR.WAX/ CHROMANCE, LEMMING/FATUM+PANIC, RRR/OXYRON, RAVE/TRIAD, NIGHTSHADE/SCS+TRC, SNOOZE/BRONX, GERWIN/FAIRLIGHT and all the forgotten ones. [S] That should do it. Thank you very much LARS. Perhaps you would like to close the book on this interview with a last comment maybe? [F] Hmm. What can I say? I am not really a man of great words, so I will just wish us all a great time in the scene. Enjoy life and stay cool. Signed, FATMAN/DYTEC+TRSI

+ THE OVERALL CHARTS - JUNE EDITION + --------------------------------------------- We return to take a fresh look at the overall charts, based on ONLY 5 Magazines released in May. We give 10 points to the number one, down to 1 point for the 10th place. The votes was counted by KBS and the charts edited by your usual host, DUKE. Be sure to send us your magazine, so that your votes will be counted here aswell. The following 5 Magazines deserves the credits as the ones we used in the making of the Overall Charts. We send them our thanks on behalf of THE PULSE MAGAZINE. INGENIOUS BRAIN # 4/EQUINOXE. OBSESSION # 1/INDEPENDENT. MAGNESS # 8/GROOVE D-SIGNS. EUPHORIA # 2/NOICE. JAMAICA # 9/JAM. The best DEMO GROUPS, CODERS, GRAPHICIANS, MUSICIANS, CRACKING GROUPS, CRACKERS, MAGAZINES, SWAPPERS and the OVERALL CHART are coming up on the following pages. There will also be a lot of important remarks about the charts in every catagory, be sure to read those aswell. + BEST DEMO GROUPS - JUNE 1994 + [Legal Chart] POS. L.POS. GROUP NAME... POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (4) CAMELOT 37 2 (3) CENSOR DESIGN 31 3 (8) FAIRLIGHT 30 4 (2) CREST 27 5 (1) OXYRON 26 6 (5) TRIAD 23 7 (-) PADUA 10 8 (-) ANTIC 9 9 (6) TOPAZ BEERLINE 8 10 (9) FOCUS 8 * After a long and almost inhuman fight between CREST and OXYRON for the number one spot, they were passed by an incoming rival, CAMELOT - the new number one. * FAIRLIGHT storms the World charts, while PADUA enters the charts to give a bit of fresh competition. The charts will most likely be stormed by another group, namely the newly returned BYTERAPERS. * FLASH INC. finally drops out, while TABOO joined them. + BEST CODERS - JUNE 1994 + [Legal Chart] POS. L.POS. SCENERS NAME... POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (2) CROSSBOW/CREST 28 2 (1) TTS/OXYRON 19 3 (5) TRON/FAIRLIGHT 18 4 (9) SLAMMER/CAMELOT 17 5 (3) BOB/CENSOR DESIGNS 17 6 (-) MMS/TABOO 16 7 (7) D'ARC/TOPAZ BEERLINE 14 8 (8) GLASNOST/CAMELOT 13 9 (3) ZODIAC/FLASH INC. 12 10 (-) LEONARDO/PADUA 7 * TTS and CROSSBOW switching place again - the usual route. But some heavy competition is on its way, in the form of TRON of FAIRLIGHT and SLAMMER of CAMELOT. At the moment it seems as if everyone else is unable to shake the top. * MMS re-enters the charts, while LEONARDO is back in the spotlight with a thin 10th place. Meanwhile ZODIAC is on his way out, with FLAMINGO and AXIS moves out this month. Also GLASNOST seems to be going no where, while MR.SEX returned to bring glance on BYTERAPERS with excellent coding. + BEST GRAPHICIANS - JUNE 1994 + [Legal Chart] POS. L.POS. SCENERS NAME... POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (1) CREEPER/ANTIC 45 2 (2) ELECTRIC/EXTEND 44 3 (3) OGAMI/FAIRLIGHT 40 4 (4) JOE/WRATH DESIGNS 38 5 (7) ROB/CAMELOT 24 6 (6) HEIN HOLT/FOCUS 23 7 (8) MIRAGE/FOCUS 20 8 (5) CRUISE/ELYSIUM 18 9 (9) DRAGON/CENSOR DESIGNS 9 10 (10) SANDER/FOCUS 6 * CREEPER stays KING for another month, as the top 4 remains unchanged. The difference in the top 4 has changed though, giving an unclear picture of the number one for the next chart. * ROB is moving up the chart together with CAMELOT in most of the charts lately, while CRUISE is cruising his way down the chart. * No new entries this month, the voters should think NEW. + BEST MUSICIANS - JUNE 1994 + [Legal Chart] POS. L.POS. SCENERS NAME... POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (1) SYNDROM/TIA/CREST 42 2 (2) JEROEN TEL/PHYZICS 39 3 (4) DRAX/VIBRANTS/CREST 36 4 (3) PRI/TIA/OXYRON 32 5 (10) JEFF/CAMELOT 27 6 (5) A-MAN/AVANTGARDE 23 7 (-) ZYRON/ANTIC 19 8 (6) DANKO/CENSOR DESIGNS 17 9 (9) RED DEVIL/FAIRLIGHT 16 10 (-) EVS/20CC 14 * SYNDROM is still the number one musician in the scene, followed by JEROEN TEL like the previous months. A new person has entered the top 3 though, DRAX, who will most likely keep on moving up - he will atleast pass JEROEN TEL who has done nothing notable lately. * DOS and REYN OUWEHAND drops out of the charts again - make up your mind voters instead of this yoyo-effect. But one interesting entry this month could be introduced though, as EDWIN VAN SANTEN/20CC is back in the chart system. + BEST CRACKING GROUP - JUNE 1994 + [Illegal Chart] POS. L.POS. GROUP NAME.. POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (1) SCS+TRC 39 2 (4) ALPHA FLIGHT 26 3 (3) TALENT 26 4 (5) AVANTGARDE 24 5 (5) CHROMANCE 24 6 (10) MOTIV 8 16 7 (2) TRSI+DYTEC 15 8 (9) TRIAD 15 9 (-) EXCESS 14 10 (7) LEGEND 10 * No changes this month either, still SCS+TRC at the top of the table for months without any serious competition. A bit unfair really, considering ALPHA FLIGHT, TALENT and AVANTGARDE has done better wares-wise lately. * MOTIV 8 rockets up the charts, although they had a rather slow period in MAY (but they kicked good in APRIL though). TRSI+DYTEC looks to be going the wrong direction, could be because of the co-operation causing indifferent opinions for the voters. Meanwhile EXCESS returns and ILLUSION is gone. + BEST CRACKERS - JUNE 1994 + [Illegal Chart] POS. L.POS. SCENERS NAME... POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (2) POWERPLANT/LEGEND 26 2 (3) JACK ALIEN/AVANTGARDE 25 3 (1) BURGLAR/SCS+TRC 24 4 (-) HAIN/F4CG 16 5 (4) DERBYSHIRE RAM/AVT 14 6 (5) COUNT ZERO/TALENT 13 7 (-) BACCHUS/FAIRLIGHT 11 8 (-) CHRYSAGON/TALENT 7 9 (-) DARKLORD/AVANTGARDE 6 10 (7) XXX/TALENT 6 * POWERPLANT is back in great shape (according to the voters anyway) taking over the number one position just one point ahead of JACK ALIEN. Looks to be an exciting run, eventhough POWERPLANT do not even deserve to be here. * The chart changed massively since last, with DOC, BOD, TSS and BENSON being sent out - while HAIN storms the chart, and new faces for the chart, like BACCHUS, DARKLORD and CHRYSAGON enters. We still need to clear the chart a bit though, COUNT ZERO and XXX should not be here! + BEST MAGAZINES - JUNE 1994 + [Overall Chart] POS. L.POS. MAGAZINE NAME... POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (1) NITRO/EXCESS 39 2 (6) THE PULSE/REGINA 33 3 (5) SKYHIGH/OXYRON 26 4 (-) ING.BRAIN/EQUINOXE 21 5 (2) SPLASH/ACCURACY 20 6 (8) REFORMATION/FAIRLIGHT 20 7 (-) JAMAICA/JAM 16 8 (3) NETWORK/COMIC PIRATES 14 9 (10) REVEALED/CAMELOT 13 10 (-) UPDATE/PADUA 7 * NITRO stays sharp giving the word QUANTITY a new meaning, while THE PULSE is spinning like a yoyo and tops the chart together with SKYHIGH. * INGENIOUS BRAIN storms the charts, but this is most likely just a one timer. There are dusins of better mags around! * JAMAICA and UPDATE enters the charts, but ought to give room for magazines like VANDALISM NEWS and MAGNESS, who has proven to be more worthy of the votes. + BEST SWAPPERS - JUNE 1994 + [Overall Charts] POS. L.POS. SCENERS NAME... POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (1) CALYPSO/AMNESIA 40 2 (6) SPLATTERHEAD/CHROMANCE 18 3 (-) LEECH/COMIC PIRATES 18 4 (2) NIGHTSHADE/SCS+TRC 16 5 (3) DERBYSHIRE RAM/AVT 15 6 (-) CASH 13 7 (9) TABASCO/FAIRLIGHT 12 8 (4) ACIDCHILD/TABOO 10 9 (-) DR.KAOS 9 10 (5) BIZARRE/TRANCE 8 * CALYPSO is unbeatable at the moment, collecting more than twice the votes than that of the 2nd placed SPLATTERHEAD. * LEECH re-enters the chart, and rockets up the chart to a nice 3rd place, with NIGHTSHADE moving down. * New swappers are introduced this month, CASH and DR.KAOS who are both farely new in the eyes of the voters. Meanwhile BIZARRE moves down and almost out of the chart, with STYX, ANIMAL and STARLIGHT already far and away. + OVERALL CHART - JUNE 1994 + [Overall Chart] POS. L.POS. GROUP NAME... POINTS -------------------------------------------------------------- 1 (6) FAIRLIGHT 147 2 (2) CREST 133 3 (7) CAMELOT 131 4 (4) AVANTGARDE 107 5 (1) OXYRON 170 6 (3) SCS+TRC 79 7 (-) ANTIC 75 8 (5) CENSOR DESIGNS 74 9 (-) FOCUS 57 10 (-) EXCESS 53 * FAIRLIGHT is the big surprise this month, moving up all over the place in the overall charts. The same goes for CAMELOT, who has gained a lot of votes in general aswell. * OXYRON is put out by a devistating blow, but will most likely recover. It is not like the voters to stop voting for someone they have picked as the favourite for so long. * ALPHA FLIGHT, TALENT and LEGEND drops out, while ANTIC, FOCUS and EXCESS all had a good month. /DUK
World of demos 1
+ WORLD OF DEMOS - THE CRITICS CORNER + ------------------------------------------------ The wonderful WORLD of DEMOS returns to delight you with another edition of demo and graphics reviews - we give you an insight on what is HOT and what is NOT. WORLD OF DEMOS was cancelled last month. Here follows a comment from STEVE about that. This chapter was not included in last months edition, and I, STEVE, speaking for the whole WOD staff, am of course deeply sorry for this. As DUKE wrote, there were trouble just before deadline. The WOD staff DID finish all articles in time, contrary to whats usual (!) and to the impression you might have gotten last month. However, publishing a magazine requires cooperation and timing from all parts, and we seem to have failed here. Please do not think of this as an attempt to come up with an excuse, but rather as an attempt to explain our work. It is not enough to just sit down and write! Now we bring you the reviews from the fantastic trio of WORLD OF DEMOS, and we end the show with an overall chart. PARATECHNOIA by 2 LIMITED (REVIEW) ----------------------------------------- STEVE, about the coding: I could not have come up with a single good reason to name a group after a pseudo-tekno project if I had a million years. But I guess these guys could. After a loooong intro with lots and lots of text and logos fading in and out, you are introduced to the first actual part of this demo. A funny sprite-upscroller appears (I use the word funny because it was flickering and just plain freaking out when we saw it. We are not sure if this was a bug with our system, but it did not look bad. Just funny). Except for a whole lot of sprites (not multiplexed, just copied on the Y axis), there is not that much to say about the part code-wize. Next part has a bunch of sprites aswell (Hello? Did we just buy a new book on 6567 VIC-II sprite programming?). A small multicolor bitmap VSP/FLD is behind the sprites. After that, we see a (nearly) fullscreen logo bouncing up and down, with 3 colour graphics scrolling horizontally inside the logo. Even though this routine could very well be the most simple, it is probably also the one looking best!! The "climax" of PARATECHNOIA is a "State-of-the-art"-like part (remember? The cool demo with the dancing dames by SPACEBALLS/AMIGA). 2 LIMITED's problem is, that the girl (which is what I suppose the blob is) they used looks like something the cat dragged in (What did you do? Scan your mother?!), and the animation is a total failure! Instead of dancing, the girl is staggering around as if she suffered from some horrible desease. Finally, the music in this part is terrible. I know this is DRAX's field, but I must say that TEKNO combined with kinder- garden songs is not my cup of tea!! (-And I am NOT trying to be funny. Take a listen, and I am sure you will recognise birthdaysongs and other wierd stuff you used to sing when you were little). A piece of advice: Load up HOLLYWOOD STRIP POKER instead. Atleast the animations in this game give an impression of female curves. The very last part is a huge scroller with a "HAWKEYE"/ "PARALLAX" scroll inside it. This looks pretty OK. Rating: 45% for the coding. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : Another demo low on graphics, snif snig. The art I found had its own style, but huh. Too obscured, fast made and no design. Rating for this is 35. DRAX, about the music : Music by MATT GRAY I guess, very atmospheric and therefore also a decent chouce for an intro, the music is also very spooky and gloomy, which I appreciate a lot. The last music contains filterchords, and that alone pulls down the rate a tad. But I do not take this tune seriously, as it sounds like the music in the past sounds, probably made in FAME's routine player. It sounds okay. Rating : 58% for the music. PARATECHNOIA by 2 LIMITED (RATINGS) ------------------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 45% GRAPHICS : 35% MUSIC : 58% JERKLAND II by DIGITAL DESIGNS (REVIEW) ---------------------------------------------- STEVE, about the coding : This demo has an excellent little introduction. It is only a small picture (The DD logo), but the sound is a sampled TV- jingle, and it gave me the impression that DIGITAL DESIGNS are somewhat professional. After an intro of text and logos fading up and down (very "in" these days, isn't it?", a strange spritescroll meets the eye. Strange, because it is in all borders, and each pixel is presented by a sprite. It looks like it as done yeeears ago. After a short while, a (textscreen) scroll appears under the spritescroller, though. This increases the quality of this part a bit. The next part looks very "Censorish". Two scrolls, one zooming from the center and out towards the left side of the screen, and the other on top of the first, scrolling upwards. Visual result: acceptable. We all know that mandelbrot-fractals are very popular these days. Apparently, DIGITAL DESIGNS know this aswell, so they made their own mandelbrot-part. Here you can select an area to zoom, and press a key to start the calculation. The calculations are not done at warp speed. But atleast they are done. On to the next part. Suddently 16 colours is not enough. Here the coder tried to simulate RGB plasma as seen on AMIGA and PC. I must say I was surprised with the result; it actually looks good, compared to some other colour-blend effects seen on the C64. The last part on side A was a disappointment, though. It is called "trifli" (Well. I read that in the scroll. I would not bother naming it!!) and it is the type of effect where a line waving over a picture splits the picture in two parts, and updates different pictures over and under the "split". The only thing "special" about this one is that it is in FLI (big deal) and that the rutine flips between 3 pictures (even bigger deal). After watching this, you are asked to flip the disk, whereafter a two DYCP-like scroller appear. One (light) in front of the other (dark), and each scrolling sepperate ways (The first scrolling from right to left, the other from left to right). The illusion is that the second scroll shows it is back and scrolls to the right, and then twists into a normal DYCP (showing the front and scrolling to the left) when a certain point is reached. The last real part is a D41B/D41C beat-o-meter. Oscillo- scopes for samples have been made so often (on all computers aswell), but I have never seen one working with FM-synthesis before (which is the princip the 6581 normally uses). DIGITAL DESIGNS did it, and it does not look great. But I still like it, cause it's something different. And it's always better to do something dofferent, than doing what other people did before. The end part consists of a screen filled with sheep (Ehrm.. Well, NEPTUNE said that my "sheep" had tusks, so I am not so sure anymore. But they are animals of some sort!) which come, and then go away. Why not. Then there is a scroll and the greeting fading up and down. Not the biggest revolution of all times, but still a pretty good demo. Rating : 70% for the coding. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : The graphics in this demo has a lot o simple logos, a problem which is not to be overlooked is the fill copy, and letter copying. Fortunately some nice art happend to appear, like 3-D logos. DIGITAL DESIGNS appears to have appropriately skilled artpower, but the standard is mainly low. Rating : 40 % for the graphics. DRAX, about the music : Music by SHARK/REGINA, well, what is there to babble about here. It sounds to me a tad boring, but still better than the average standard. I like the tune in the "Zoomerperspective flashing scroller" part, as it has quite a lot of variation. The end music is nice aswell indeed, I especially like the instrumens. Rating : 77 % for the music. JERKLAND II by DIGITAL DESIGNS (RATINGS) ----------------------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 70% GRAPHICS : 40% MUSIC : 77% BIJOU by LETHARGY (REVIEW) --------------------------------- STEVE, about the coding : This demo starts up with a fullscreen FLI-pic and a scroll (and lots of FLI bugs) in the left side of the screen. After analysing these bugs (or reading the scroll), you proceed to another FLI part. Now colourcycling, which updates approximately each 3rd-4th frame. This rutine could have been easily made really cool, but instead the coder chose to realtime calculate the cycles, or use a reeeaaaally slow screen-update. I dunno. The cycling itself looks cool, but the lousy speed destroys it again. On to the next part, which is a plotter part. A dot-globe is updated each frame in a small square, together with an equally small ace-plotter. And more spacepressing. Now you see a chessboard. I expec- ted it to start zooming (wauw. Wouldn't that be a surprise?). Instead, some shadebobs starts drifting around over the chessboard. The palette could have been better though. Last part in this demo is a typical conversion from PC or AMIGA. You see a (small) 3D net of lines, where it looks like letters are squeezed down on the net (A bit like when you stomp your feet in the sand, and leave a print). It seems as if the LETHARGY coders really do know how to code - Unfortunately they code, in my opinion, far too boring things. Let us see something new, you have got the potential. Rating : 55% for the coding. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : Well, what can I say. The graphics in this demo has its own style, and that is cool. But still it is foolish to draw great shapes if one is not able of performing so. Graffity elements are used in nearly all the demo parts. In the intro a full screen FLI logo appears rather odd, nothing to read out of it really, to draw big patings, the art is to give it life even in places where the motive is not occupied. Rating : 65 % for the graphics. DRAX, about the music : Well, well, isn't it good old DOS again. This time he brings you the worst tunes I have ever heard from him, the tune in the plot-thing part is definitely the best, although he uses a too low frequens' leader the second time the leader appears. He also uses Ringmodulation on the bass, which I personally think is very neat. The end tune beats everything regarding lameness - By using the obligatory filter-clicks. When will you learn? I guess you will soon be proclaimed MR.FILTER CLICK! Rating : 48% for the music. BIJOY by LETHARGY (RATINGS) ---------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 55% GRAPHICS : 65% MUSIC : 48% LOGIKAL SOLUTION by ENTROPY (REVIEW) --------------------------------------------- STEVE, about the coding : The intro for this part is a 3D dot-starfield (which they have named a "startrek" rutine. I have not seen startrek for years, so I cannot remember if there were such in the series). Next is.. a scroller! And this one REALLY looks 4 years old. It's a sideborder stretcherscroll (I think BOB/CENSOR was one of the first to do this kind of effect. But that was nearly before I was born!) that does nothing new whatsoever. Bogus! Then we have an effect called "7-colour plaz".. (And I will finish the sentence for ENTROPY: It's spelled "plasma"). The rutine is small, but looks really cool. Nice job. The 4th part is a sleasy pornotanz-part, where the only effect is some pictures of nude women being shown (MY KINDA PART!! hehe). I hope DRAX gives this tune a high rating, cause it is cool! The coding isn't, though. Last part is different. A load of chaotic things taking place on the screen. Pretty decent end part. Rating : 60%. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : The demo remains and indeed acquires a fuller significance, even though in times the art in this demo fall. But I took a look at the intro logo, it's a big sideborder logo mainly blue colours, but It seemed to rediscover its lost coolness when it is confronted by the style and by the freedom offered by the artist. If you take a closer look at the fill, you will discover some cool plasma effects in it (the T and the O), some things lamers do not see when they run out voting. The graphics is, well, quite okay in this demo. But I miss the "LOOK AND FEEL" litigation. Rating : 75% for the graphics. DRAX, about the music : The intro music is done by DANKO, used before in an old CENSOR demo. Part one sounds much like a real classical tune. I haven't got that much knowledge of who the composer of it might be, but it sounds to me okay. The tune in the 2nd part is made by MATT GRAY - a decent choice (it is one of his better ones). The 3rd tune is by ZYRON. This tine did not exactly make me have an orgasm. Techno does not address me. The instruments does not shock me, but I guess they are quite okay afterall. The 4th tune is by JEROEN TEL inspired by LEVEL 42 (I like them, especially MARK KING). By the way, this part is extremely nice. Well done dudes! The choice of music is not that bad either. The 5th and last tune of this demo plan sucks, it is boring and monotonous. Rating : 62% for the music. LOGIKAL SOLUTION by ENTROPY (RATINGS) ---------------------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 60% GRAPHICS : 75% MUSIC : 62% WORLD OF CODE by BYTERAPERS (REVIEW) ---------------------------------------------- STEVE, about the coding : Well, this was the surprise of the month. BYTERAPERS are back with a demo, and I was very sceptical when I heard this. I never thought an old group could rise with a demo this great.. But read on. The demo is introduced with an FLI mover (Sort of a tech-tech mover, where the FLI logo moves from the right side to the left). The first effect is a sideborder zoomer/stretcher-scroll (a zoomer (like GLASNOST's in the "UNNAMED DEMO") combined with a normal scroll. The idea is great, but the result is somewhat flickery. The next part must absolutely be the best looing part this month. It's a number of animations of a rotating face. While these faces are rotating, they move from the upper right corner down towards the lower left corner. But that is not all. A rotating mandelbrot fractal is slowly being updated on top of these faces. The result is that it looks as if the C64 has two bitplanes - one behind (the moving, rotating faces) and one in front (the non-moving mandelbrotfractals). Brilliant part! In the next part you are flown over a dot-landscape (like the one in PANIC/FUTURE CREW (PC)). This landscape does not rotate around the Z-axis like most others do, but instead this one is REALLY fast. Next part is called "elastic stencil planes" (In CAMELOT'ish, this effect is called funfilling!). Most people I have talked to were really impressed by this part. Codewise, it is not all that fantastic, though. It is only sprites layd over a bitmap picture. Still, I must admit it looks cool. Then we will move on to the next part, which is a filled vector-part. The objects have been bigger by other people, but the rutine is still fast. One of the (glenz) objects in this part is really funny. It is the nazi-sign in white with read background, which changes colours depending on what position you see it from (And now I do not want anyone taking me for a nazi. The reason why I beleave this is funny, is that a simple sign keeps on offending millions of peoople without limits. And that is totally redicilous!). Next part is a "realtime mandelbrot zoomer". Which I believe is totally lame, as it is only one precalculated picture that is being moved around on the screen! Two parts left. The next is two precalculated transforming dot-objects with "light source". Looks neat. the end part is a 1x1 chars upscroll, with huuuge extended glenz-vector in the background. The extended objects in the background gives a real cool design effect. All in all, this demo is a very good example to what demos SHOULD look like. A very high standard. It is also worth noticing that everything was coded by one person, MR.SEX. Rating : 90 % for the coding. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : This demo is really low on graphics, but really nice design (erhm, well, border bugs, hmm). Anyway, ther's a logo which appears several times in different colours drawn in the same style as in the HORIZON demo LAST TRACTOR. No big deal! Rating : 40 % for the graphics. DRAX, about the music : The first tune is by ZYRON, this is surely one of his better ones. The second tune is made by JEROEN TEL, ripped, and therefore I will only comment the demo. I like the demo except for the "HAKENKREUZ", which is being used as a vector- object. I hate Nazists, Racists and Fascists. The end tune is made by DEEK, and it has been used several times before, but fits very well to the rest anyway. Rating : 73 % for the music. WORLD OF CODE by BYTERAPERS (RATINGS) ----------------------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 90% GRAPHICS : 40% MUSIC : 73% WOW STORY IV by WOW (REVIEW) ----------------------------------- STEVE, about the coding : I thought the WARRIORS OF WASTELAND died years ago. But then it is great to suddently see them alive (and kicking? You have to read on to answer that one). First we have the usual up/down intro (Yes, I AM tired of these!!), followed by a "normal" intro (One of those you put infront of your cracks). Part one is a bunch of shadedots moving around at the upper half of the screen. But I would much rather talk about the next part, cause that includes a great picture of an elf-girl with no clothes on (Nice wings.. Hehe!). But just when you've unbuttoned your pants (Ehr..), a plot-scroller enters the screen, and ruins the mood! Buuh. Anyway, the plotscroller itself looks allright. This part is shade-bobs, and nothing more. These shadebobs look really cool though. Great palette! Last part (well, atleasy I assume this is the last part. The machine fucks up when you press space after this one). This is an effect converted from the AMIGA, and it is a sort of beat-o-meter, where a ball fall from a basket onto one of 3 squares each time there's a beat on one of the voices. It is awefully small, but still a neat idea (Or conversion or whatever). Rating : 55% for the coding. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : One of the problems which occupies a central position in this demo's graphics, is that the most of the logos look the same, but there's a fullscreen picture of some sort of lady (yeah!). It looks really nice. But no surprise inspection in this demo. Rating : 70% for the graphics. DRAX, about the music : The intro tune has a nice start, and some good ideas, but then it just continues with changing the bass chords. The tune in the 1st part is by XAYNE, ripped. No comments. The tune in the 2nd part is by JEROEN TEL, first used in an intro for REMARK. Anyway, it is ripped, and therefore I have no comments except that I think it is a nice tune. The tune in the 3rd part is pretty boring, is it old MATTHIAS (SYNDROM) or what? The music in the 4th part is by MATT GRAY is ripped, and therefore no comments. Well, I guess I have one anyway (ehr..) - nice logo. The last tune is by LINK/VIBRANTS, ripped and therefore I have nothing more to add to this demo. Rating : 55% for the music. WOW STORY IV by WOW (RATINGS) ------------------------------------ PROGRAMMING : 55% GRAPHICS : 70% MUSIC : 55% NOT WORTHY by FOCUS (REVIEW) ------------------------------------ STEVE, about the coding : This demo was entirely coded by one person - COMPYX of FOCUS. The intro is a bitmap picture of some funny big guy, followed by a huge bitmap scroller. The first real part is a sprite DYCP (And a 1x1 scroller..). This part is the 50th FOCUS part ever. I am sure FOCUS is rather unique in keeping track of their demoparts, wouldn't you say?!. Anyway, I am supposed to discuss the coding, but there's not much in this part. Sprite DYCP's are old news. By the way; many people confuse sprite DYCPs for DYSPs (Different Y sprite position). This is understandable, since DYSP is a lousy name for the rutine it actually represents. DYSP means sprite moved up and down, but in order to actually BE a DYSP, this must take place while the sideborders are removed (which is hard, since rastertiming is crucial for sideborder removal, and sprites fuck up the timing). Next part is a bitmap scroller with attributes, meaning that the colours of the individual words can flash, fade or do whatever the coder desires. Also, a 24 sprites multiplexer is on the screen. COMPYX claims that the bitmap rutine is revolutionary. When I was in THE BLACK LORDS (3-4 years ago), THA made a very similar scroll. So I wouldn't go as far as calling it revolu- tionary! Still looks OK, though. The multiplexer on the screen actually only shows 12 sprites (12 letters), but each sprite has a black overlaysprite, which makes it clearer over the bitmap background. The end part has a sine-swing upscroll exceeding the left border, and a small spritelogo exceeding the right border. NOT WORTHY is an excellent example of design taking over instead of code, still COMPYX prooves to be a fair coder, so. Rating l 65%. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : Well, there's nothing to freak over in this demo with graphics and coding by COMPYX. COMPYX has devoted much of his time in the scene to draw outstanding graphics, but in this demo - well, not to be extremely agressive, some of the logos are just not too fascinating. These works of art stand apart from other great works COMPYX has developed. Well attempting to capture the ever changing luminous effects in this demo is quite hard, but anyway, some cool art happend to appear. Rating : 65% for the graphics. DRAX, about the music : The intro music is by COMPYX. Well, another one tries the magic way of composing - We most certainly recommend COMPYX to stick to his graphics and code, which he surely does much better. The two tunes by JVD are too ordinary, but still the instruments are getting better. We recommend JVD to look into his slide-training!! Also look into the art of splitting up your tunes with breaks. About the MCA conversation - Nice job, but still if you have to convert from the old master, then improve the quality of the tune. Rating : 68% for the music.
World of demos 2
NOT WORTHY by FOCUS (RATINGS) ------------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 65% GRAPHICS : 65% MUSIC : 68% HAMMERING CHAOS by CHAOS (REVIEW) ------------------------------------------ STEVE, about the coding : HAMMERING is a small demo with only 3 parts. First part is a plasmafield, where each colour is 8x8 pixels (a char). This might not sound impressive, but the visual effect is rather neat. The music used in this part is updated 10 times each frame (!), so naturally the coder had to limit his rutine. Second part is an animated 3-coloured ray-tracing. I don't know about you, but I have just about HAD it with ray-tracing parts. Haven't we seen enough of those?! Last part is a cheat multiplexer (A sprite each 3rd rasterline, and on the 24th rasterline, the upper sprite is copied down to those position, and soforth) with a hireslogo VSP underneath it. I think this demo is proof to the fact, that a megademo containing 28 parts does not have to be better than a 3 parts demo. HAMMERING is a good littledemo. Rating : 55% for the coding. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : Not to stomp on CAMELOT competitors products, but one thing is for sure: I have not experienced the best demo here! I really like the variety of graphics and styles, it keeps the scene moving in cool directions. I guess the graphics are done by PETE. Rating : 45% for the graphics. DRAX and METAL, about the music : The intro music is by SYNDROM: Quite OK, but he has done better ones for sure. You know both our opinions on multiple speed tunes! First by music is by DOS. Was it music or was it some kind of FX? We could not tell the difference (Kidding?). However, it is much better than the usual things you do - also no filter clicks (we guess?). Second part music by ZEUX: VERY below the average stan- dard. Do NOT try to hide behind fanzy instruments if you can't use them properly. Sorry, but a fact is a fact. The last tune is by AMJ, one of the best 64-technodudes ever (I love you! - METAL). It is hard to do techno on the breadsin, so. Rating : 70% for the music. HAMMERING CHAOS by CHAOS (RATINGS) ------------------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 55% GRAPHICS : 45% MUSIC : 70% PARTY POOPER 3 by AMNESIA (REVIEW) ------------------------------------------ STEVE, about the coding : This is also a very small demo. However, this could be proof to the fact that demos can be TOO simple. First part is an animation of the coders head being crumbled like a piece of paper. Nice to see that someone is able to do new things with animations, instead of just rotating or ray- tracing them. This is the only real effect, but the screen has a really cool design. Second (and last) part is two big interference-circles (one in chars and one in sprites) panned on top of each other. This gives an effect of interference, which you might know from physics-class (Though I bet you were all in biology studying female anatomi, eh?!) This demo is OK, but requires nearly no coding skills. Rating : 40% for the coding. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : Mega demo or pot leafs? This demo contains two logos. The first one is, well, nice - But I guess I messed the outfit. The second logo has nice soft colours, but still not a big graphical show here. Rating : 60% for the graphics. DRAX and METAL, about the music : All the music is by MAC 2. We agreed on saying that the last two pieces were almost too sweet, but still OK. The first one however we think is very experimentive, although the music has some disharmonies. All in all, it makes a good impression. BTW: Look out for those nasty filter-clicks, do not switch filter on/off in the same voice. We say in general - only use filter in one voice, unless you are in control of it! Rating : 71% for the music. PARTY POOPER 3 by AMNESIA (RATINGS) ------------------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 40% GRAPHICS : 60% MUSIC : 71% SCIENCE by FICTION (REVIEW) -------------------------------- STEVE, about the coding : Interesting names. I wonder if they will call the sequel "SPACE", and rename the group into "BALLS"?! As everyone else, FICTION introduces their demo with an intro filled with text and logo up/down fadings. Interesting. Next up is a long sample with some black dude shouting ugly things at your mother. The first part is a fire-plasma field, done in the same way as the plasmafield in HAMMERING CHAOS. Next is a sprite-circle scroll over rasterbars, and after that you see a techtech logo-DYPP (Somewhat like the one I did in ARMAGEDDON III/ X-FACTOR) with some very interesting rastercolours under- neath (Interesting, cause they look like something taken out of a circus. But taste IS individual). Next part includes a small surprise. The effect you see is a "raster-bender" (horizontal rasterlines that are split 40 places, and each split waves up and down. No; not especially wild, since it is done in characters) with a sprite logo over it. The sprite logo is in one colour, but if you have ACTION REPLAY, try changing sprite-multi-colour 1 and 2 ($D000+27 and +28 as far as I remember). You will then see that the logo is in three colours, but all colours are set to gray. Strange?! The last part is an FLI (Well. I wouldn't go as far as calling it FLI. More like a cheat colorchanger) with a spritescroller. And that's that. Rating : 60% for the coding. NEPTUNE, about the graphics : Hmm, SCIENCE contains okay graphics, but if you have seen one logo you obviously have seen them all. Above all, I want to be true and exact. The artist ZITE has not captured any new ideas nor effects, which his logos can tell, and the dense surface is mainly made up of the same fill with simple shapes and related to each other in a way which reveals no sense of design. A little hint to ZITE - try to compose differently while drawing, that is beyond doubt the most important thing you should have in mind. Rating : 40% for the graphics. DRAX and METAL, about the music : The intro tune by YOKO is pure CRAP! In the first part is yet another sample. When are you people going to learn NOT to use the 64 for sampling? It sounds like turning on the radio on a noice frequence. The second part music is puke, while the 3rd part has music by JEFF, which is a real nice one, but still - You have done better, we all know that. The last music is by YOKO : We have but only one thing to say - YOKOLADESOVS. Rating : 44% for the music. SCIENCE by FICTION (RATINGS) ---------------------------------- PROGRAMMING : 60% GRAPHICS : 40% MUSIC : 44% That concludes this months demo reviews. But stay tuned, before we bring you the table with the ratings, we will give the latest graphics-collection reviews by NEPTUNE. DANCE WITH EVIL by AGONY (GRAPHICS-COLLECTION) --------------------------------------------------------- This graphics collection is a real horror to watch, so please take your empty popcorn container and place it over your hea. I have never been so grossed out. UGH! There are some nice pictures in this collection though, all in FLI, but some of them seem to be too colour-full. ASTAROTH has the skills to draw great art, and not scan pictures and put colours to it. A real maternity ward. Rating : 90% for the graphics. TRANCE by AGONY (GRAPHICS-COLLECTION) ----------------------------------------------- Here we have a great graphics show, with great logos. The second one with a brand new monster that hardens its victims arteries with extra high cholesterol cream (hehe, I am just kidding!). In this collection some of the pictures has been in competitions and done really great, but well, I have seen most of them done by a paint brush, so it's just not my cup of tea. BTW: RODOR made all the graphics. Rating : 95% for the graphics. INTRIGUE by TABOO (GRAPHICS COLLECTION) ------------------------------------------------ Well, I will give you an overall look of the collection. FAZEE has quite a talent, in this coolie, the surface itself has depth, as one colour shows through, another scrumbles over it (get the point?). The cool thing about this collection is that he has not been dealing with a kind of point to point transcription, but rather trying to recreating exclusive effects. But FAZEE, do remember touch and colour do not correspond in a specific way to natural phenomenon. Well, all in all nice graphics with in the context of the more general issue of interlaced-art. INTRIGUE comtains cool art, but some of it could requite adjustments. Rating : 85% for the graphics. COMING UP - THE RATINGS-TABEL! Special assignment
+ SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT - INFORMATION AND DEBATE + ---------------------------------------------------------- SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT returns with another month in the line of duty to bring you entertaining debates and opinions, not to disclude our informative articles. This month we will continue our discussion about the scene wars, only this time we will work our way through to the next topic which will be revealed later in this months edition. We end this months edition with the usual INTERNET article from MASON/MOTIV 8, this month working his way deeper into the world of the internet. We would like to encourage everyone out there (no matter what country, status, group or race you belong) to write us what you think about our debates, and perhaps add your own opinion about the things we discuss. The address to write to is as always : THE PULSE MAGAZINE XXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XX XXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX SUPPORT TOWARDS NEWCOMERS IS MISSING --------------------------------------------- As I used to be a constant ragger on the US boards, I simply have to comment the WAR topic. Furthermore I have to add, that I cut down on warring when I started doing the MONTHLY RELEASES for THE PULSE and jouned up with TALENT. TALENT is a group where the motivation is just getting high when MAJESTY is around. Actually he is not, and everybody is just walking in his own direction (HI, MARCO). From this point I hope to be able to describe the actual wars a little bit, as I did in the MAY-list. The scene is going down the drain. It is just as simple as that. Newcomers (not in a bad way, though) are not really taken serious anymore, and people from the past are always welcome to call back. That is okay with me, but the actual support towards newcomers is missing. The people around do not seem to be able to see who might have the skills to do something, and who is just wanking around. Everything is focussed towards the major groups. An easy example for that is the caller activity on HIC. No group - no calls, although it is a decent board where a friendly atmosphere is no problem, and it would be a neutral territory for every war. This makes a lot of people look towards the PC and AMIGA, as they think there they might get a little more resonse. So as a final warning. Wars with newcomers and ragging them down is for sure destructive to the scene. Wars between major groups, like in the past ACTION vs. LEGEND, RSI vs. LEGEND among others are just obligatory. Be productive in your personal way and try to keep things going. This way we might survive another few years. The release of LEMMINGS has shown that atleast some companies see the 64 still as a way to get things out. Let us hope this will stay like it is. More than a decade running a simple 8-bit computer is something nobody will ever be able to do. Not on the PC or anywhere else. On the other hand: Are we just degenerated humans dreaming of what happened in the past? Note, just keep yourself openminded. COUNT ZERO of TALENT TECHNOLOGIES COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR ------------------------------- Thanks for the response ANDREAS, and the wise words. You clearly have the right idea on many of the points you listed, but in order for me to answer all of them - or atleast make a decent comment to them - I would have to urge you all to read this months article NEWCOMERS' SOCIALISM vs. ELITES' LIBERALISM, which I am sure will tell my point of view, and will most definitely qualify as an observer of things changing. However, to return to the contents of your letter I have to agree with your main point. The scene DOES alienate the newcomers, and YES, it is destructive to the scene. After all, the newcomers are the future rulers of our scene, and thereby making them the most important sceners in a way. BUT, do not get me wrong. I have no wish to put them on my level or anyone else's for that matter. The newcomers MUST go through the traditional route to fame, everything else would be against what the scene stands for - and mind you, our system does work, and it creates personalities instead of weaklings who we do not need to carry on our inheritage. This more or less leads me in the direction of the area of which my upcoming article sorounds. Therefore I will try to keep away from that topic so that I will not spoil it for any of you out there. The wars however will keep on going whether we want it or not. When someone is insulted or challenged, he must prepare for a battle. It is very ethical to go around trying to make people understand the value of peace, but keep in mind, that as long as there are two persons on this earth, peace will never be for certain. You cannot change what we are deep inside, and the scene works that way aswell. The debate is still open, send us YOUR opinion about whether you think if wars are Destructive or Benefitial to the scene! + NEWCOMERS' SOCIALISM vs. ELITES' LIBERALISM + --------------------------------------------------------- The scene is an amazing creation. It is about 12 years ago the organised scene as we know it began, and today we are still here to vitness the impossible live and bloom. But everything living will face borders and dangers on its way to meet the natural death, one of them is the Socialism we are able to vitness being brought into the scene by the newcomers and sceners from Eastern Europe. This is not a propaganda article to fight Socialism in its political ideology, on the contrary. The Socialism we are able to vitness in the scene today has no political background, but the phrase "We are all the same" which has been spread and posted by most newcomers and middleclass sceners has a definite meaning to it, one that originates from the most fanatic Socialists. During the bloom of THE PULSE MAGAZINE, we have been herrased by many of these Socialist types - who claimed we were only interested in the Elite because we wanted to "reach fame and acceptance". Others claimed we were a bad magazine because we "were pretending to be elite and were acting arrogant". Clearly both of these accusations are contradictions to eachother, but what does that tell us! Although it ought to be obvious from our editorial, everyone involved with this magazine are members of groups respected in the world with the status as ELITE (e.g. REGINA, VIBRANTS, TALENT, MOTIV 8, CHROMANCE, LEGEND and CAMELOT) and with comfortable backgrounds of being members of ELITE groups and involved with successful operations. This in my opinion is what makes an elite foundation, one that OUGHT to be taken seriously. Mind you, this is not only this operation I am refering to, it is the scene as a whole. The scene has always had a very liberal attitude. The new- comers were teased and laughed at, all part of working your way up to becoming accepted and perhaps shooting your way through to a status as an elite scener. But the newcomers in the scene today refuse to go through that process, going against everything the scene constitution stands for. The small MUST respect the larger, the system of the liberal scene system - but the newcomers only complains about the attitude of the elite, calling them arrogant and lame. The fact is, they are the lame ones, especially lame because they show no respect and THEY are the ones acting arrogant. I would like to get YOUR opinion about this article. Write to us at our address posted in PREFACE. We need as many good answers to make a good debate on this topic as possible. More about the internet... ---------------------- Welcome to another edition of the internet-article. This one is going to be a short one, but a special one, because very important news has arrived us! After the warning I will tell you how to solve the problem! WARNING! SAURON and TG-ACME have got big troubles using the inter- net! They have recieved and send password from other com- putersystems! Now they have observed that someone is keeping a watching on them! SO - BE CAREFUL SENDING PASSWORD AND ILLEGAL THINGS, LIKE WARES, HACK-TEXT ETC. ETC. That were the warning! Now some information, why it's VERY dangerous to send illegal things by post! Normally on UNIX-machines, the post is placed in a mail-dir under the non-private directory owned by root. When you get the password-list, it will fill a lot in the directory (maybe it will give disk-full in the dir). Instead you can fx.FTP/FSP or TELNET, because all the results (files etc.) will be placed in a private home directory, and here it will only eat up your disk-quota. If you do not have access to FTP/FSP or telnet you have to use other ways to get your illegal things. Here you can crypt your files/ The most wellknown cryption pro- gram for UNIX is using the system with a PGP-keycode. With this code you can crypt and decrypt the files and the root cannot decrypt, because he does not have the PGP-keycode. The PGP-keycode also needs a password to decrypt the files. You can of course also use other methods fx. PKUNZIP with a password on etc. etc. But the PGP-keycode system should be the safest one. The PGP-keycode is the same algorythm the SWISS BANK uses. Now the last words. Since last edition we have got letters from people who cannot get the UNIX-files. That means, if you cannot FTP from your DOS-drive to your UNIX-drive you cannot use FTP. Now you just have to wait until we next will learn you more about internet! In the meanwhile you can try to connect to the COFFEE House on TELNET. Meet the press
+ MEET THE PRESS - WORLD OF MAGAZINES + ------------------------------------------------- Magazines are good reading for the sceners, but they also control the scene and decide its direction in the future. Welcome to another episode of MEET THE PRESS, the place to take on the magazines and those that write them. When we first started MEET THE PRESS two months ago, we were almost certain to get a packed edition every time with letters and comments to every little word we put in this magazine - afterall, this is the chapter where you have the chance to react towards our method of writing. Although we are known to be a magazine who are not late to tell the world our opinion about the direction the scene is going, we have yet to receave any letters about out (in our opinion) fresh approach. We take that as a positive thing, afteall, it must mean you all agree with what is written in THE PULSE MAGAZINE. But still, show your appreciation or opposition nonetheless, makes better reading. You are free to address any of the editors working for THE PULSE MAGAZINE in this chapter. Write us your letters with the letter market with the person you wish to hear a comment from - he will then reply your letter in here the next month. MEET THE PRESS is not only a reaction chapter though, we like to think we try to find better guidelines for the readers, giving them our firm opinion of what is worth while reading in terms of what magazines go. This month we will discuss the problem todays magazine charts are facing as well as a couple of magazine reviews. Please do keep in mind, we only consider reviewing magazines who has either started or chosen to go in a different direction. We do not do ordinary reviews (like we know them for a lot of other alternative magazines). Send your reactions to the following address, marked with the handle of the person you wish to get your reply from. THE PULSE MAGAZINE XXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XX XXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX You can also call our HOTLINE at : +45 - 98 18 12 65 and give us your comments over the phone if you prefer to go that way instead. We look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible. Meanwhile, enjoy this months edition. THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE -------------------------- Here I simply have to go with my rather unqualified comment towards the May edition of one of the articles written in MEET THE PRESS. To start off, I simply have to agree on the voting topic. I for my art have not been voting for atleast 2 years, and cannot understand why magazines like NITRO, A-HEAD, etc. are topping the charts just due to their quantity. This is obviously the wrong way, as the only magazines ever being able to do it this way were RECALL and SCRIPT, having both quantity and quality. So to everybody around, vote for the mags, people and groups who are around and active. If you really have to vote for old and famous people like POWERPLANT and XXX, why not settle with activity junks like BACCHUS. When I was last talking to BOD/TALENT, even he was unable to understand his actual positin in the so-called charts. Actually seeing even me in the charts is pretty ointless, as I have not been cracking for about 5 months now. People who are actually deserving this stuff, are e.g. JACK ALIEN, THORN+NEVIS, HOK, BACCHUS, etc. On the other hand, you can check in for quality aswell. Fucking think before you vote or let it be. COUNT ZERO/TALENT COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR ------------------------------- I have to agree with you on every oint COUNT ZERO. We do need some sort of explanation about the actual situation of the scene-charts, but no matter where I turn, the result appears to be negative. No one knows WHO is voting for the DEAD, INACTIVE and POOR groups, sceners and magazines, but some one IS doing it though. But enough about that. I have built up a theory myself about this odd magazine voting mystery in the last couple of months. I believe, that the reason for the success of magazines like NITRO, SPLASH, NETWORK, SKYHIGH among many others, is that they have a certain number of spreaders, as well as votesheet spreaders. Some of these many spreaders also spread votesheets for other magazines, and when they get these sheets back, their contacts would have voted for their magazine just to be friendly towards the person who is collecting the sheets (or to be frank : they are kissing his ass). I would like to hear YOUR, the reader, opinion about this debate. Therefore I request everyone of you who DO vote for any of the above mentioned magazines (or groups and people mentioned indirectly) to come forward and explain WHY you feel they deserve your vote. Thank you! VANDALISM NEWS REPORT --------------------------- We looked at the latest edition of this Australian magazine, also known as the 14th issue. The basics of this quite good magazine is still notable, but it has gone through some major changes though - not only with what the outfit is concerned, but most definitely also with what the staff and its contents is concerned. Today it looks to be a better bid to take a bigger art of the market than ever. VANDALISM NEWS is roughly said only board based, in the sense that it only has board-related chapters - and news. The chapters : EDITORIAL, HAPPENINGS, RELEASES, ADDRESSES, IMPORTANT, ILLEGAL and INTERVIEW is well informing, entertaining and well written aswell. But one thing is missing though, the original idea in the magazine - somehow it is lost in the struggle to obtain a bigger share of the market. This does not necessary have to be a bad thing, but they most definitely need it if they plan on taking on the biggest mags in the scene. The editorial consists of VENGEANCE/SCS+TRC and JAZZCAT/LEGEND assisted by RRR/OXYRON/AFL aswell as MOREN and NIGHTSHADE of SCS+TRC. Contrary to the large SCS+TRC involvement, VANDALISM NEWS is independent. Although VANDALISM NEWS looks a lot like the THE PULSE in shape and form, they deny the fact that it should have been their intentions. One thing is for sure though, they have started using that special conservative writing-method THE PULSE is especially known for - but since we feel this is the only right way to address the readers, we salute their decision with an accepting tone. VANDALISM NEWS has been around for a couple of years, and has yet to meet its big breakthrough. But now that the main editor VENGEANCE is back and calling out again, VANDALISM NEWS could very well turn out to be one of the reliable and regular magazines in the scene. But only time will earn them that credit - we need to view a couple of more editions in the near future. In general I would say VANDALISM NEWS is worth while reading for anyone within the illegal cracking and modem scene. It has hot and actual text, which is the strongest side of this mag. Due to the fact that VANDALISM NEWS is edited by Tasmanian Australians, the English is obviously good and correct. Now we will wait and see whether the transformation of VANDALISM NEWS - will prove to be the start of a new star! OBSESSION REPORT -------------------- Two years ago OBSESSION was announced to be released, but it never came out. Now, two years later, OBSESSION has hit the streets, and we take a look at the result. OBSESSION is another independent magazine, seems as if it has turned into some kind of trend (or maybe the reason is that no group wants magazines anymore under their label?). But somehow the independance is lost in the biased text, written to serve the editors own urposes. Very disap ointing when you just thought the scene grown assed that. The OBSESSION outfit is a direct insult to the user. Do not get me wrong, the graphics and coding may be in order, but the idea of an outfit, is that it is sup osed to be user friendly - something OBSESSION most definitely is not. The menu takes heaps of time to get assed its design steps, something that really annoys the user (it annoyed me anyway). When you finally get to load a chapter, the text-display takes a million years to plot the letters on the screen aswell. BAD! The editorial consists of CAVRON/SCS+TRC and X-RADICAL/ CHROMANCE/CODERZ with assistance from HOMEBOY of CHROMANCE and BLACK PRIEST/ANTIC. OBSESSION is NOT an original magazine, it is more likely a magazine put together solely for the purpose of getting the power that sometimes follows. The release charts in this magazine are said to be CHROMANCE pro aganda, but we have heard accusations like this from every side to every release chart - so I will not conferm this. OBSESSION is another board based magazine in the series, with a few reports on exclusive matters (ap arently about people the editorial have something personal going on with). They also provide a special chapter CONSOLS, which looks to be a copy from a real-life magazine (word by word aswell). The English is horrible. The text is written sloppy, and that most definitely does not promote the understanding for the reader. I wish they would take the time writing an article takes, and perhaps use a dictionary when they are unsure about certain words. Misspelling constantly is a deadly sin for a magazine editor. All in all, OBSESSION is a disgrace to the world of magazines. Not because of its actual standard, but because it took them two years to come up with what looks to have taken less than a day to put together.
