Preface

PREFACE GENERAL EDITOR : DUKE

Once again we are proud to bring you the most all-round mag in
the 64-scene today. WELCOME to the AUGUST edition of THE
PULSE.

Most of you probably wondered why THE PULSE did not appear
in JULY. Most of the staff have been on holiday through JUNE,
but now that everyone is back, we are happy to be able to give
you THE PULSE once again. The OFFICIAL release-date remains
the 1st of every month. Be sure to get it!

INSTRUCTIONS : [+,-] to switch pages. RETURN to reach menu,
[+,-] to choose catagory, SPACE to load. RETURN to skip.

Those of you that got the first issue (june edition), would
notice a few changes in the outfit. This outfit is not the
final one, as we are still working on a new one, which we did
not finnish in time for the AUGUST edition to be released.

MOST of the reactions we got on this mag were good. Strangely
enough most of the reactions were aimed upon the outfit,
almost NOONE said ANYTHING about the content of the mag.
Nonetheless most of the negative reactions we got, was caused
by the "THE PULSE" logo. We have ofcource taken that
critisism serious, and we have already made a new one for the
next issue. We hope that will be more of your satisfaction.

I'm truly disappointed about the lack of response to the text
we serve for you, apparently most of you find OUTFITS in mags
more interesting than reading it. LAME!

As you've already noticed by now, THE PULSE is now a trademark
of PANDORA. DR.ZIVAGO and I (DUKE) joined PANDORA, so did
IDOL from DOMINATORS who is now also a part of our staff..

We have a few new sections to present for you this month, one
of them is called- "WORLD OF DEMOS", this month written by
me, but from next month MADUPLEC/CREST will take over. Be
sure to read it...

Global Report

GLOBAL REPORT GENERAL EDITOR : DUKE

Again it is time for the GLOBAL REPORT. This time we have a
whole lot of happenings to report on, due to the summer-break
of THE PULSE in JULY. But we will make sure you will not miss
out on ANYTHING, like always!

Unlike most summers, this one has been quite active, seen from
the scenes point of view. Alot of old faces reappeared, and the
comming months may be very exciting, with all the games that
has not yet been released from the soft-ware houses.

If you have anything important to report upon, feel free to use
our address in the PREFACE.

• It's been a very big summer for PANDORA. Not only is it back
releasing again, It is expanding. GRIDPOINT died, to see THE
PULSE become a trademark of PANDORA, as DR.ZIVAGO and
DUKE joined up. Also trader IDOL/ex.DOMINATORS and cracker
SHOOT/ex.DYNAMIX joined up with PANDORA.

• TRICKET/ex.DOMINATORS left the sinking ship to drown, as
he set off to a career change in VISUAL REALITY. He will be
running the WHQ for VR called DOMINIC, at : +45-55776535.
Sofar the board is set to be doing really well, with alot of
callers. Give it a call!

• SCAREFACE was kicked out of ARMAGEDDON. Later he joined
up with ILLUSION and CODERZ, as a hacker. GRECO and LUCIFER
left, ILC is nolonger ILS HQ. According to mega-trader DERBY-
SHIRE RAM, the current balance of ILLUSION depends on the
marked. Since there has been no sign of any games since MAY in
the UK, the cracking section is taking a short break to enjoy
the SUN.

Current memberstatus of ILLUSION goes as follows :
SAURON, FIST, HERO, GENE, ATMOS, SODAPOP, TRONIC,
ZORLAC, FREESTYLE, BAZE, NME, REBEL, RICHIE, DERBY-
SHIRE RAM, BRETT and SCARFACE..

• LEGEND kicked out : HOK, A-MAN, LEXI, DARKLORD, DAVE,
SKYWOLF, etc. No reason has been given for this, but It seems
as if LEGEND are getting ready for a long sleep, with only a
few of the LEGEND members being actively engaged with the
scene. The CURRENT memberstatus of LEGEND should be :
POWERPLANT, GOLDFISH, WESTBAM, XXX, SKATER, BAAL,
FLETCH, DOC, ANTITRACK.

According to SKATER, he has put his computer back up, and It
seems as if he has got the LUST of doing SHOCK again. Bod,
however, claims SHOCK will be released on disk only once,
followed by a good-bye edition on paper.

• THE RULING COMPANY kicked out THE NIGHTSHADE and
AUDIENCE. HELLRAISER joined up with MAYHEM and CHIPSTER
ex.DEADLINE joined up to fill out the hole. IN LIVING COLOUR
which has done quite well up to now, is now a TRC board.

• SLAUGHTER has already passed away. All the members joined
up with the AMERICAN demo-group ARCANE.

• LEXI/ex.LEGEND joined up with swedish FAIRLIGHT.

• ICARUS/ex.ALPHA FLIGHT joined up with the HOT ONES in
CHROMANCE.

• PAL/ex.OFFENCE joined up with PANORAMIC DESIGNS.

• UNIFIER/ex.FLASH INC, DEATHSTRALKER/BRUTAL,
DOS/ADSR and TWILIGHT/ex.ARCADE joined SPIRIT.

• DR.DISK/ex.ARMAGEDDON joined up with TRC.

• SKID-ROW, SKINHEAD and LANCE joined up with AFL. SKIN-
HEADS first ware for AFL was a re-release.. GOOD START !?!

• HCL and VODKA/ex.BOOZE DESIGNS joined up with the
swedish SUPER demo-group LIGHT.

• A new H/P group in the states has been build, called MATRIX.
Members sofar : VIRTUAL VISIONARY, ASMODEUS, FROZEN
FIRE, GUPPIE and CREDIT-CARD.

• ROWDY AMERICAN DISTRIBUTORS are back in business with
original members and a few new ones aswell. The memberstatus
of RAD is : BLACKHAWK, LUCIFER/ex.ILS, MR.MISTER, NOMAD,
DR.DOOM and CHEROKEE.

• INSTAND/ARMAGEDDON quit the scene, and MO who just
returned, was booted. No word on where MO plans to go, If he
does not decide to quit ofcource.

• GENESIS PROJECT seems better than ever. SNACKY and
GOBLIN are seriously considering comebacks. The graphician
DECOY DESIGN returned to the scene with SILICON, renamed
himself to SANDERS and joined up with GP. The mega-traders
AIRWOLF GERMANY and ASLIVE also joined. THE BEAST was
kicked.

• EMPIRE is back in full effect. This time BOOZE has brought
along VIZZ and INTRUDER. Sofar they seem unstopable, and
after being active just two months since their break, they have
already picked up the #1 spot in the states. THE EXTREMIST
has not been reported active, so we will have to wait and see.

• The current #1 RED SECTOR INC. has had a pretty busy summer
aswell. ANARCHY joined up with the AMIGA group TRSI. TRIGGER
left F4CG and joined in. SUBZERO left CODERZ to join RSI
aswell.

FORPLAY the WHQ of RED SECTOR INC. is due for some major
changes. First the board will change from UC to C • BASE. A
special version (VILLAIN MODDED) which allows to choose
between C • BASE and UCBBS. Alot of changes as said before is
due, as 9600 baud xfers, 1.2.GIGZ, 4 megaheart+RAMLINK has
to be installed. This would make FORPLAY the most powerful
board in the states sofar.

• CROSSFIRE of EPIC released a file to protect him from any
on-going talks, that he should be the INFAMOUS re-cracker
EXORY. Apparently the critisism agains't him began shortly
after he released the game WOODY THE WORM. Critics say
WOODY THE WORM was released by GENESIS PROJECTS in 1991.
According to CROSSFIRE the version cracked by GENESIS was
a preview of the game, and the version cracked by CROSSFIRE
should've been the 100% game, released along with the AUGUST
issue from GOLDEN DISK. CROSSFIRE who lives in the same area
as EXORY, can be expecting further critisism for this, but
right now he says he wont be calling out very often due to the
new board of his he just put up.

LATEST NEWS : (just came in on the 2nd of AUGUST)

• VILLIAN left ARMAGEDDON to join up with TRC. According to
him, ARMAGEDDON formated his board.

• According to WESTBAM on THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE, REBEL and
DERBYSHIRE RAM left ILLUSION to join up with LEGEND. But
according to TRONIC/ILLUSION, DERBYSHIRE RAM did not
leave ILLUSION.

• X-RADICAL/TRC joined GENESIS PROJECT and BAMBAM
was kicked out of ARMAGEDDON.

That concludes the GLOBAL REPORT. The past months has been
extremmely busy, let's hope the following ones will be just as
active.

If you have anything important to report upon, find our address
in the PREFACE section.

ALL THE NEWS HAS BEEN GATHERED BY PSYCHOBILLY, DUKE
and ATTRACTION.

If you find anything incorrect, feel free to let us know. We
will correct it in the next issue.

Monthly Releases

MONTHLY RELEASES GENERAL EDITOR : PSYCHOBILLY

Feel welcomed again in the MONTHLY RELEASES chapter written
by PSYCHOBILLY of RSI for THE PULSE. All releases between
the JUNE issue and the AUGUST issue are listed and judged
here! Although the AMERICAN scene has picked up sligtly
with the comeback of RAD and EMPIRE the US scene still suffers
from a lack of talented (!) fixers. Therefore the rules which
are used in this chart-system remained unchanged.
Read closely the explanations of this different chart-system
and remember the purpose of this system is a maximum of fair-
ness. Any game which is uploaded as first to the majority of
the most important boards (THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE, FORPLAY,
PURGATORY, DOWN BY LAW, DEVINE ULTIMATUM, VIRTUAL
REALITY and TUNNEL OF WARES) is judged as first-release
no matter if that version is fixed or just in PAL. In case a
release is already fixed PAL/NTSC when it appears first on a
board the EURO-group is credited with 2 extra points which are
added to the total amount of points for this release. In case a
fixed version appears after a PAL ONLY version made by the
same EURO-group, the group gains 1 extra point. Fixed versions
supplied by a different EURO-group which appear later have no
influence pointswise for that EURO-group. Just the importgroup
is credited for the fixing then.
The game is judged by the PRICE (3.0-FULLPRICE ,2.0-BUDGET
1.0-LOW BUDGET) and by the QUALITY (3.0-BEST ,0.1-WORST).
Both price and quality have the same importance.

ALPHA FLIGHT (Germany, USA)
______________________
After a quite unactive period wareswise, ALPHA FLIGHT finally
released their first ware on PAL after their comeback, called
SPACE DUELL (3.8) a budget game from Level 99 which was fixed
by EMPIRE afterwards. Sadly they re-released VARI PRV at last.

CHROMANCE (Hungary, Germany, Sweden, etc.)
_________________________________
It seems they couldn't hold the standard of the previous month.
MISS MIND ANIA (3.8) from ABC and imported by CODERZ was
released by them. Also the CODERZ-only ware TILI TOLI (3.1) was

CHROMANCE (Hungary, Germany, Sweden, etc.)
_________________________________
was provided by them. Furthermore a quite decent preview called
THE CASTLE (0.5) was released by CHROMANCE and imported by
CODERZ.

EPIC (DK, Germany, etc.)
_________________
This group put out a bunch of releases this months but also
many re-releases and games below the standard of an elite
group. Their version of STIX which was imported and fixed by
RAD did not work 100% so the points were given to TRC+EMPIRE!

EPIC (DK, Germany, etc.)
_________________
This group released a couple of games from a collection disk
from MARKT+TECHNIK namely BOOM (1.5), KONCEPT (1.9) and
COLOURS (2.9) which was imported and fixed by RAD. Also a game
called CYBORG 2900 was put out by them which was ignored as it
was obviously made by using the 3D Gamemaker. To top that EPIC
re-released WOODY THE WORM which hit the boards more than
one year ago already by GENESIS PROJECT! Their non trans-
lated (!) version of SPACE QUIZ (4.0) from GOLDEN DISK was
ignored pointswise, too as the game is still in GERMAN!

GENESIS PROJECT (Germany, Sweden, etc.)
_______________________________
Although they have not done anything wareswise, GP could get
some points as EMPIRE finally fixed the "unfixable" METHADOS
(3.7) from DOUBLE DENSITY which was released on PAL a long
time ago.

ILLUSION (Norway, Sweden, UK, USA, Denmark, Etc.)
_____________________________________
One of the most active groups of the last months reduced its
productivity majorly due to the loss of GENE and HERO. As
result of EMPIRE's BEE 52 (4.9) fix they gained one point.

RED SECTOR INC. (Germany, UK, USA)
__________________________
They could continue with releasing a steady flood of wares this
month. TRACER (4.5) an English low budget from COMMODORE
FORMAT was released by them which was imported and fixed by
ARMAGEDDON. Then THINK FAST (3.9) from MARKT+TECHNIK
fixed by HEADHUNTER was put out. Another MARKT+TECHNIK
game called PLIS (4.1) was released as PAL and later imported
and fixed by EMPIRE. A kinda decent DYNO BLASTERS type game
from Double Density called DETONATOR (5.4) was spread on the
boards in two different versions, one imported by CODERZ and
the other one imported and properly fixed by EMPIRE.

RED SECTOR INC. (Germany, UK, USA)
__________________________
Also PSYCHIC KAOS (4.2) a weird game from DOUBLE DENSITY
was released by them. Later EMPIRE released a fixed version.

SUCCESS (Holland, Germany, Austria, etc.)
______________________________
The dutch section supplied the users with a preview called
MARBLOID (0.4) and a puzzle game called QUARX (2.9) from
PARALYZE which is shareware. SLAUGHTER imported and fixed
that game for them. SCS also got an extra point as EMPIRE fixed
their version of MOVE ON which they released on PAL last month.

TALENT (UK, Germany, USA)
____________________
They entered the wares scene activly again with the more than
a year old fullprice game BUNDESLIGAMANAGER2 (6.6) which was
translated into ENGLISH and fixed by ROCKSTAR.
The other game released by them called CUP FOOTBALL was
already released some years back by ACTION, so it is ignored
pointswise.

NOONE COVERS THE RELEASES LIKE THE PULSE

THE RULING COMPANY (Holland, Spain, etc.)
_______________________________
This group surprised the users with a couple of releases. They
started with ORION (4.0) from the MAGIC DISK which was imported
and fixed by EMPIRE. Then they released the 100% version of
STIX (4.4) from MARKT+TECHNIK along with EMPIRE. Then they
released a budget shoot'em up called SHELLSHOCK (2.6) from
COMMODORE FORCE on PAL. Furthermore they released a very
usefull graphics tool called FLIP.
Their German cracker JACK ALIEN provided them with an old
game called MANAGER from GERMAN DESIGN GROUP which was
released by ULTIMATE+AFROZ in the previous year!

OTHER GROUPS
___________
A new group called SACRED released EOROID (2.2) on PAL and
TRANCE put a preview on the boards from the soon comming
HENRY (0.6). SACRED also released VARI (0.4) preview as first.

Due to the lack of FULLPRICE games we had to skip the BEST
FULLPRICE GAMES charts. Next month we hope to present you
that category again!

"ZOOROPA - be all that you can be.. Be a winner, eat to get
     slimmer."

That is the opening line for this months CROSSFIRE, and the
lyrics taken from U2's latest album has more to it than just
meets the eye.

Sometimes the scene CAN be a bit of a ZOO itself. Only in our
case the monkey is not involved, but CLOSE!

• PARSON may be going to EAST-GERMANY for a job. Rumours
say the job is involved with smugling polish NUDE-DANCERS for
his new bar- "Single men of the 90's". Spokesman LAGERFELD
says, "we have no comment, but the bar has already been visited
by TRICKET who was searching for a new job since the unofficial
death of THE DOMINATORS". Other rumours say, that the whole
operation is a cover-up for LAGERFELDS (ex.RADAR) new NEO-
NAZI group, which will be run by SKINHEAD, who just returned to
the scene together with LAGERFELD from the Barber.

• THOR is not normal looking after all. Our associate- MAFIA
LENTINI, who is currently stationed in NEW JERSEY (US), has
discovered that THOR sends a stand-in whenever he needs to
make a puplic-appearence. The reason for this, is a competition
of a prestigeous matter with BOD/TALENT. The competition was
made to see who can stay inside, not getting out at the longest
time. BOD however, is experienced in staying away from civili-
sation for years at a time, but according to THOR, he feels he
has a good chance of beating the record of- 6 years, 4 months,
1 week, 3 days, 6 hours and 4 minutes done by ANTICHRIST. It
could have been longer, but unfortunately ANTICHRIST ran out
for PORK-CHOPS, and without hesitating, he walked outside his
house and put an end to his FANTASTIC record.

sure is a shiny thing. Sigh, Sigh, Etc. Etc.

RICH: Ah OUI. Shiny!

• FORPLAY, WHQ for RED SECTOR INC. is going through some
major changes. It is said to become the most advanced board
ever on the 64. According to the sysop of FORPLAY, NIGHT-

to a sysop, BOD actually released SOMETHING! It is still very
unclear what BOD released. A sick sysop claimed BOD uploaded

PROFILE GENERAL EDITOR : DUKE

WELCOME to a brand new section in THE PULSE. The name of
this part is PROFILE, in which we will tell you a story about a
profile (famous person) from the 64-scene.

This month, it is our privelidge to present you an exclusive
interview with BLACKHEART/Ex.EXCALIBUR. He was know to
those who has been around for more than 2 years on the boards
as a fearless hacker, who once supplied almost ALL of europe
with virgin cards (when they actually existed). Then one day h
disappeared, he was a victim of the puplic wrath, and the loss
for the scene was bigger than just another colleague leaving
the scene. Eventhough forgotten by many, he was still

respected and remembered by the many that he "worked" with in
this 64-INDUSTRY. Being not only the reliable hacker and sup-
plier to the many that he was, but also a good friend that you
knew would not let you down when the heat was on. He was unique
in his field, and today It is our honour to bring you an exclu-
sive interview with him.

[D] DUKE/THE PULSE

[B] BLACKHEART/Ex.EXCALIBUR

The Interview begins on the following page.....

[D] HI there DANA, or BLACKHEART as you are/were known. You
are nolonger in the scene, but I'm sure you have not been for-
gotten by the vast majority. But, for those out there that
never had the privelidge of getting to know you, in the scene
or in person, why not tell them WHO you are, and what your
functions were in the scene.

[B] I'm BLACKHEART (or DANA, your pick) and I was a card-hac-
ker. I also hacked VMB's and blue-boxed (very handy when set-
ting up a conference!).

[D] Yeah, we sure did not lack of conferences when the codes
were floating. Anyway, you used to be a very reliable source
for codes. I remember the time where I was in THE DOMINATORS,
at that time you just joined up with EXCALIBUR. It was already
known then (as now) that most hackers had a small (SMALL???)
lazyness problem. Did you ever go through that same PROBLEM?

[B] Well, my area was easy, to get cards in. But then they pup-
lished an article in the paper, so I had to hack off a director
to the U.S. It was a bit harder. Sometimes I would get a good
card, then use it to hack a few more from a pay-phone just
dialing random numbers in other area codes. The only reason I
wasn't lazy in getting cards, was because It only took me about
10 minutes. If it took longer, I'd try later. I'm not bragging,
I'm just saying that some people can hack, and some people just
can't!

[D] I guess 50% of the secret is the tone you use, some just
can't, because they sound too unprofessional, and I suppose
that would be the reason why they can't caugh up any good
cards. HMM.. Anyway, tell the readers something about how you
got busted..

[B] Well, one FRIDAY after school I came home to find 2 police
officers and a representative of MT and T (my local phone
company) (Ed.Not anymore, huh). My room was really empty (they
took my 64 (ed.OH MY GOD, NOOOOO.. Sorry, I couldn't help my-
self Dana!!), two 1541 drives, a 1581 drive, my 20 inch TV, all
my tapes (as in the ones you listen to), all my disks + notes.
I went down for questioning and chatted with the cops for about
an hour or two. To make a long story short, I never got my sys-
tem back, but I was never charged. I did get my TV and TAPES
back, MAYBE someday I'll get my computer.

[D] That's heavy, I guess a million things went through your
head when you saw the car(s) outside your home!?! I heard a
rumour somewhere, that you were INFACT narced on. Did you
ever find out who narced on you, IF any?

[B] I was always suspicious of a few people, but I don't really
care. It's been a long time, so It's too late to do much, but
I'd like to know who, If anyone, narced on me. Who knows, maybe
It was a local!

[D] Still, revenge would be SO sweet. Anyways, you were not
always in EXCALIBUR, why not tell us how you started out in the
scene, all the way up to your engagement with EXCALIBUR.

[B] I started out WAY back in a group called TNT/PLO which
really SUCKED and at that time when I knew NOTHING. I worked my
way along to running a small H/P (Hack/Phreak) board for a
while (THE BLOODY FIST) and shortly after I blue-boxed for
quite a while, which is around when BLACK REIGN was formed by
myself and DEAD ZEPPLIN with THOR and INTRUDER. It was easy
to get games when you have a blue-box. You can call anywhere,
anytime, no codes needed! A while later they stopped blue-
boxing here by putting a tone filter in the system. The group
mostly broke up, and one day when I was bored I hacked a card.
I couldn't believe how easy it seemed. So, with that card, I
called someone from each group, GRIM REAPER/NEI, EXTRE-
MIST/EMPIRE, MOLOCH/FORCED ENTRY (later it became
ARMAGEDDON) and X-FACTOR/EXCALIBUR (long time since I've
spoken with DANNY!) and only 2 groups called back - MOLOCH's
group and EXCALIBUR. GRIM REAPER said he was waiting for an
import but never called back. ETIENNE (EXTREMIST) said -
"There is no way you will ever be a member of EMPIRE", but
interesting enough, he later tried to get me to join when I
became friends with members of groups they were trading with
(Ex.DEADLINE). Anyways, to make the story short, I joined
MOLOCH's group for 1 day, then joined EXCALIBUR where I
remained until I was busted.

[D] I guess there are not many alternatives when you want to
join an ELITE group in the states, NOTHING like the EUROPEAN
scene. Any REGRETS when you think back?

[B] No, I have no real regrets, otherwise than not being more
careful with my notes. I wasn't like some hackers who wrote
good-bye files and wrote how they stayed in all day and had no
life. I find that pathetic, when I hacked or called out, or
anything, It was always in the night or when I had nothing to
do. Hacking never stopped me from doing anything, so, as I
said, I have no regrets.

[D] It's good to hear that. What was the best part of the scene
that you remember?

[B] The best part of the scene was getting to know different
people around the world and learning many things about many
places. One of the best things the scene gives a person is a
chance to get to know so many people.

[D] Yeah, we sure do learn alot about people from different
countries. How long do you figure the scene will last, and
incase It drops dead in the NEAR future, what do you think will
be the reason for that?

[B] Well, when I was busted over a year ago, the scene was
dying and I can't see it lasting too much longer. In EUROPE the
scene seems to still be pretty much alive, but in the U.S. and
CANADA it's dying quick. It's not like it once was, the people
are more lame and have bigger egos. Their skills are low, but
they are todays "elite". Two or three years ago they would've
been laughed at. This is one reason why it will die. Another
reason is, most from the "old scene" was either busted, dropped
out or moved to AMIGA/IBM. The 64 just doesn't have the power
to last with IBM's and CONSOLE copiers becoming popular. The
last reason is because It's being too hard to phreak.

[D] I give it a few years anyway. Now that EASTERN-EUROPE
has accepted the 64, I'm sure they would buy it as most Ameri-
cans/west-europeans buy AMIGA/IBM. This would increase the
marked, and there would be more games to release. Anyways,
so now you have a NORMAL life in SYDNEY/CANADA?

[B] Well, I have a girlfriend, a car (a nice RELIANT K-CAR)
with a kicking stereo. I also have an apartment (but I still
live at home, the apartment is for my weekends) so if any old
scene people want to get in touch, give me a call, the number
is still the same.

[D] Any DREAMS or AMBITIONS about the future?

[B] Well, someday I hope to lead the country and have loads of
money, but right now I just want to finnish HIGH SCHOOL and
COLLEGE, and continue to slaughter anyone who plays me at
STREET FIGHTER II or TIME KILLERS at the ARCADE!

[D] HAVE MERCY! Who were your best friends in your 64 career?

[B] My best friends were (some still are) : FUTURE/TECH, THOR
(I'm one of the few people that doesn't hate him!), MK, MOLOCH
(are you ever home, or have you died and someone left the
answering machine on?), STEVE/X-FACTOR, ANTICHRIST,
NARC (who should get a letter from me soon! Long time since
we've talked MICHAEL!), EQUINOX (have you died, RUSS?),
DEADSHOT, ZALDRON, CARCAS, IRON LORD, DUKE (HEY! That's
you) (ed. OH MY GOD, IT IS!!!), STRIKER, FRENCH HAWK, DESIRE,
and many, many more! I apologise to anyone I forgot, and like I
said before, anyone who wants to chat can give me a call some-
time (ESPECIALLY if you like TECHNO music).

[D] Well, "I DON'T LIKE REGGAE - I LOVE IT". EHRM. Thanks for
your help DANA, I guess I will continue to write with you in
the near future through mail. Might there be a chance we can
get to see you here in EUROPE?

[B] Hopefully sometime after I graduate I'll be visiting EUROPE
I want to visit ENGLAND, DENMARK and GERMANY! Keep your
BEER and CIGARETTES hidden!

[D] Thank YOU, and GOOD LUCK in the future with EVERYTHING!

[B] No, Thank YOU Alex!

My pleasure! Next time we hope to be bringing you another
interesting profile to read about. Keep your eyes open, we
might just write YOU for an interview... Till then, DUKE

Special Assignment General Editor : Duke

"COMPETITION" The term that build the concept SCENE on
every computer, and still keeps it alive.

Today the scene is rapidly falling apart on the 64, eventhough
games are still floating. The amount of games being released
is still enough, to settle the hunger of the few groups around
to MAKE some competition. But for how long?

Competition or not, many would think it takes alot of skill to
beat the powerfull modem-groups, who has the connections a
group needs to stay on the top of the charts.

Strangely enough, It takes more skills in the mouth than on the
computer to put together an elite group. In the old days the
charts were roamed by the ones with the best crackers, today
It is completely different.

Talent was a perfect example. Bod, who has been It's leader
ever since it began a few years back, is truly one of the
profiles in the 64 scene. His cracking-abbilities has been
questioned many times, not alot of hard-to-crack games has
been put out by Bod either, but still he has managed with only
a few people to help him out with the practical things in his
group, to create one of the best and most powerfull groups in
the existance of the 64.

Bod was never known as a hostile character, he had a job, and
he always managed to do it. Most people who tried pulling off a
war agains't him, did not get much response. Bod's spoke
through his wares, which came out in massive numbers following
his career.

Not many managed to get a technique of their own. Many failed
to put together an original group, which could be seperated
from the other groups by their special way of doing things.

F4cg is another example. This old Italian lead group never did
succeed in getting much respect from the states. Most european
groups accepted the group as just "another" group around.

Fact was another. F4cg was not JUST another group. Not only
have they managed to put out several first-releases during the
past years, they also had one of the best crackers in europe-
Fen1. But F4cg did not use much power on gaining respect on the
boards through using superior use of Puplic Relations. Other
groups made success using Puplic Relations. Gene of Illusion,
Thor of Glory, Narc of Legend and Bod of Talent all had their
own technique of getting the attension of the people, even-
though they did not manage to open any fan-clubs through their
career.

Most groups have a different oppinion on how their group should
use the PR they got, many failed, for instants The Dominators.

Dominators, lead by Cosmo and Dogfriend (both unactive at the
moment) had different oppinions on how a group should face the
puplic in the states. Cosmo thought showing up on the major
boards once in a while could help getting more respect, while
Dogfriend saw PR as useless, eventhough he had a very compete-
tive mind, whos main goal was getting respect from everyone for
the releases Dominators were supposed to have released.

Normally It does give alot of respect and power to release, but
ONLY if you manage to release often. Dominators got beat up to
several times by Legend and Illusion (mainly), and the American
groups developed less and less respect for the old KINGS group.
They put PR low on their priority, this was a major mistake.

The American scene is wierd and twisted. Most americans does
not give a damn about socalled "friendship", for them the only
thing that counts is games. Later on the americans started to
disappear, and the european top-groups had bigger problems on
getting their connections in order.

This crisis struck alot of groups, small american groups were
used as substitutes, which did not work out at all in the end.
The only group to take full advantage of the crisis were the
number one group at that time- Legend. Their PR worked every-
time. They managed to hold two american top groups for them-
selves, which put Dominators out of business. For Dominators
It was the end, for Legend It was victory. All caused by
perfect puplic relations in the states.

Puplic Relations is intirely different in the demo-scene. It
should be obvious, since demoes never did need to be fixed (no
points were given for a fixed demo). But still PR could lift a
fairly good group into fame, with a good and offensive stand on
both the boards and a good grib on the magazines.

Like in the real world, the 64-scene is also controlled by some
powerfull magazines. Most information comes from magazines,
and sometimes they decide how a group should behave towards
the puplic.

Magazine-mania also hit the 64-scene at a time. Every group
needed a magazine. They all wanted to make the best, but most
(probably about 90%) did not have the skill that it takes to
write an interesting magazine. Therefore most groups put all
their eggs in one basket, and made a good-looking mag, with the
only thing cool about it being the outfit. ACTION, more COLORS,
more CODE, more GRAPHICS, more.. They forgot to write an origi-
nal mag, most of their text became dry, objective and boring.

In the past 2 years only two mags had an original idea on both
the outfit and with the text. SHOCK had an original idea, they
opened everyones eyes, and proved that using small letters
was a really good idea. But the term "be original" was really

missunderstood, why be different- JUST to be different? Some
said, "wow, we can't use 1x1 letters, it's already been made
before!?!". They all forgot that the main priority of a mag
should be the text, but noone would listen.

Shock was objective, but not too much. It was good, there was
alot of text, and noone disliked it. BUT, then the greatest
problem happend. The release-date was breached, sometimes
they did not release the mag for months, and last BUT not least
they released the mag DAYS after the official release-date.
Shock has not been released for a long time, It simply disap-
peared from the scene, as did the maker- Skater/Legend.

Propaganda has a different story. It was released when Anti-
christ was still around. At that time It was extremmely biased,
but still funny to read, eventhough you either hated it, or you
loved it. BUT, when it returned, It was not biased anymore. It
had a different editorial, and a different oppinion. All of a
sudden it was totally objective. The one thing Propaganda was
known for, was gone. Now It's JUST another mag, with NO oppin-
ion. BORING! Be creative, but take a stand. ALWAYS!

That is all for this months SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT. I hope you've
enjoyed reading it. Feel free to write us letters, if you have
anything important to say, which you might think would fit in
this section. TILL THEN, THE PULSE IS WRITTEN BY REAL MEN!
