. IN THE HEART OF SCENETOWN .

S
So I will be perfectly honest with you
for a second. From editor to reader.
1996 was the dullest year ever in his-
tory of the scene. The trend is, un-
fortunately, unmistaken and documented
across the entire market.

I remember sitting in front of my screen
at the end of 1995, trying to estimate
the expansion, adaption and highlights
of the coming year. I had my hopes high
for the Internet, that quickly was gain-
ing ground and popularity. Today, a year
later, I am only sad the way it has
turned out. The IRC is a public meeting-
point, for active and inactive, angry
and happy, bothered and unbothered
sceners. It is a digital bar, that
slightly reminds us of all the usual
happenings taking place in a real one.
It is not serious, often not scenere-
lated and only at times interesting.
The FTPs are increasing by amount, but
unlike the boards, it seems there is
currently only need for one or two
systems. With just a click away, and

everyone looking the same, it is rather
difficult to have a favorite, isn't it?
And by far, never before have the wares
been marketed so badly. Who can discuss
a debated release properly? Who can
honestly claim a message has gotten
through whether the game was properly
fixed, a 1OO%-version or a re-release?
If the owners of the FTP do not know -
the title will remain on the drives long
enough for everybody to leech it.

Unfortunately, I will have to sit down
and take parts back of my critical
acclaim about the net back. We have not
yet managed to tame the powerful system.
We have no clear structure, no forum for
discussions (apart from the haze at
#c-64) and no ambitions to create any-
thing positive. We have an entire bunch

of bragging homepages about has-beens
and the rest is a digital anarchy. Why
is there not yet a mailinglist for
sceners, that could come to replace the
subs found on the boards? MOTIV8 sur-
prised me some months back announcing
a mailinglist, but the concept came out
empty which leaves us at square 1.

I got a letter not long ago from a swap-
per that the public has considered to be
top-5 since some years back. The letter
was alarming enough to me. "I DID A TEST
SEND-OUT TO ALL MY CONTACTS, TO CHECK
OUT THE VIBE AND THE SITUATION IN THE
FIELD", he wrote. "WE ARE NOT NEEDED
ANYMORE, THE NET HAS MORE OR LESS TAKEN
OVER, AND TURNED THE SYSTEM INTO A NOT
PERSONAL MACHINE OF DISTRIBUTION", he
continued and implied a total demise of

the mailscene in the not too far dis-
tant. Maybe it is inevitable, that the
mailscene sooner or later will disa-
ppear. To think that there actually is
a mailscene left in 1997 is even start-
ling. But I still stand by my statement
- the structure for 64-people on the net
is the bollocks. It sucks, it is boring
and in the long run it will create a
flood of demises, not comebacks as sug-
gested by some. So what is the perfect
sollution? I am looking for answers and
have to put my faith in the development
of a C-base simulation for the net. I
put my faith in the launch of a proper
mailinglist, that will function as a sub
about releases, debates, rags and info-
rmation. I put my faith in the devotion
of the people, and hope they are healthy
enough to understand that this is just

a phase we need to work on. Now, more
than ever, we need to show the Commodore
64 and the scene we have created with
our own hands that we care about it.
The 64 is only dead, when we say it is.
Let us show ourselves what it is all
about.

PROPAGANDA 22 is awaited. It has been
far too long since we last met. It was
a hectic year where a lot came in the
way for the release of the magazine. The
arrangements around TRIBUTE 1996 was a
timeconsuming project in itself, even
though the event was cancelled only 2
days before kick-off. The development
of F4CG PLAYSTATION and MACINTOSH, that
both proved to be very successful, in-
volved several people from the PROPA-

GANDA-staff. They are not excuses, but
explainations. But to be honest, I, your
normally devoted and dedicated editor
did not feel up to the job anymore. For
the first time in my life, I lacked
faith and interest in the scene. I was
pissed at the dull attitude and atmo-
sphere, sad to see so many respectless,
shameless who provide nothing but plain
shit to the market (you know who you
are), sad to see so many people hooking
up their PCs because "it makes it all so
much easier". Hell, I am even a member
of a group where several "active" memb-
ers use their PCs on a daily basis, and
their 64s once a month. I say screw
them! I am still checking my Email, vis-
iting FTPs and attending the IRC with my
64. And proud to do so. - However, now
time has come to show all the pieces of

shit in the world what it is all about,
and what you should expect from the
scene - the very best. So hold on tight,
because the Gods of the press are back
to offend and put a bullet in the myth
that the 64 is on decline. Put a bullet
in the people we don't like. Gently lick
the balls of people we like. Like it or
not, we write what we want, speak our
voice and enjoy the continous develop-
ment of the press. Like it or not, but
we are more devoted and dedicated than
ever. Like it or not, 1997 is our year.
And partly yours.

All the best,

NEWSCOPY
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
