New page

<pre>About CHRIS HUELSBECK!

Hugh all over there !!!!

INTRUDER/AVANTGARDE
INTRUDER/AVANTGARDE

brings ya another interessting (!) interview with:

CHRIS HUELSBECK!
CHRIS HUELSBECK!

Have to disappoint all those who mean this interview
would have the style of the last one. Had to do it
seriously ... pity !

* = Intruder
£ = Chris Huelsbeck

*: Who are you ???
£: I was born in march '68 in Kassel - so my age is 27
years.
I did the "Mittlere Reife" and stopped the school
at the 12th class at the "Gymnasium".
Since 1987 I'm working mainly as composer for
computer- and videogames.

*: When did you get your C=64 and how was the
"coming-out" as composer?
£: 1984 I bought my 64 at "Kaufhof" for apx. 750 Ger-
man marks. I exchanged it seven times bcoz of
technical damagments. Nearly I only could afford
an Atari 800 XL but I liked the 64 soundwise much
better, so my grandma helped me out with money.
I created music since ever (poor neighbours),
got with the age of five years two years piano-
lessons and with twelfe also one year drum-
lessons.
But I never could read notes from a paper.

*: Tell us from your discovery please.
£: The mag "64-er" started a competition for self-
programmed musics. I immediately started to pro-
grame. A few soundroutines was been already done
but the idea, perhaps to catch the 10th place
brought much motivation to myself.
After a few sleepless nights "SHADES" was ready.
I never expected the fist place.

*: Have you ever had contact to the illegal scene
like cracker, modemtrader and on?
£: Nope, nearly nothing.

*: Have you still contact to old sceners of the 64?
£: Just a few ... and also no known people.

*: What is your job now - what do you do nowadays?
£: I record a game for OCEAN on the SONY PLAY-
STATION, PC, and SEGA SATURN. Beside that I work
on a soundconverter from a SNES-song from KO-
NAMI for the MEGADRIVE.
Due my problems with the KAIKO-bankrupt I had
to start from the beginning, that was in 1994.
For 1996 there are several actions planed.
For example a soundeditor useable for everyone
under windows. Beside that I still produce dance-
-music and remixes.

*: You produce CD's? Which ones and how much they
will they cost?
£: Bcoz of the requests from fans I produced six CD's
since '91.
(ed: take a look at the end of this interview if you
are interessted in).

*: What do you think abou the future of the 64 and
do you know some future-projects?
£: I still own three C=64-computers and two drives
which I still activate from time to time to watch
those great old stuffs (games etc.). Beside
that this old piece is worked out. I nearly know
nobody who still works with this machine.

*: Compare the 64 with all those actual machines you
are involved with nowadays.
£: I often miss the charme of the old 64 on those big
calculate-machines. Beside that I am very astoni-
shed about this fast development of those com-
puters today. Today you can watch realtime-gfx
which some years ago were pre-calculated. We are
short before a worldwide network of all house-
holds and act total natural in cyberspace.
I'm happy that I lived the early days of computers
lately. Artwise the new computers bring more
space for example soundwise. Today I am able to
record sounds for a game like a CD in a studio.

*: Have you any idols?
£: Nah, just Hans Zimmer comes in my mind, who star-
ted a strong carrer in Hollywood. My favourite
composer is John Williams who did some fantastic
soundtracks for films like Star Wars, Jurassic
Park, E.T. and Indiana Jones. For me he's a god !

*: What are your favourite games nowaday's ?
£: I'm an absolute "Descent"-fan!
Beside this I play some classic-games here and
there like "Impossible Mission" and "Sentinel"
on the C=64.

*: What do you do in your spare-time?
£: Cinema, music, spare time ?? What is that ?

Thanx Chris! I'll serve you with the latest X-mas-
demo's - maybe you remind yourself one fine day
and find the way back to the C=64 (joke hehe).

Some examples he did:

Jinks (1987) R-Type (1989)
