     i will grab the oportunity to      
    really ramble on about nothing,     
    to write at the full content of     
               my heart.

   issue number 25 sounds like a nice   
 reason to celebrate, but this is       
 actually the 26th issue.               
                                        
   some of you remember that we made    
 # 15 the last one. at that time we     
 really meant it. however, some of us   
 kept testing anyway. then when we      
 decided to resume THE GUIDE after all, 
 we made #15.5 to show all the test-    
 data we had collected during the time  
 of silence.                       --->

   as you know, the idea for THE GUIDE  
 came from INJUN. i got RICO from       
 PRETZEL LOGIC to do the text editor    
 for us since i knew what it had to be  
 like. when that was done, unfortunatly 
 no coder was interested enough.        
                                        
   it wasn´t untill the guys from the   
 swedish group REBELS joined us, that   
 THE GUIDE was brought out into the     
 open again.                            
                                        
   we really owe it all to BISMARCK who 
 pushed HERO into making the first code 
 we used. 801DC just finnished the      
 intro he had been working on.

   the first 8 issues were in a single  
 file format which limited the ammount  
 of data and text.                      
                                        
   the first 3 issues were totally in   
 the hands of BISMARCK. after t@at i    
 gradually took over. partially this    
 was to allow BISMARCK to get more time 
 for has cracking.                      
                                        
   it has been a TRIAD magazine, no     
 doubt about that, but when it came to  
 the game testing and display of data,  
 we felt an obligation to be as         
 objective as we possibly could be, not 
 to rank versions, only show the facts.

   i think that today, most of the      
 scene can see that we treated everyone 
 the same way. there was no end to the  
 pride i felt when someone sought the   
 help from THE GUIDE, because he knew   
 we would be fair.                      
                                        
   this doesn´t mean that we were       
 perfect. far from it. we made our fair 
 share of misstakes. i am sure that     
 one or two guys would say that all we  
 did was misstakes. :)                  
                                        
   most of those guys are long gone     
 from t@e scene while TRIAD is still    
 here. tells you something!

   issue # 1 was released just before   
 christmas 1990. # 25 was supposed to   
 be released just before christmas 1994 
 to perfectly time a fitting end of an  
 era. when i managed to delay it more   
 and more, it was even more fitting!!!  
                                        
   the days of real cracking are over.  
 most of what is done today is to       
 install cheat-options and sometimes    
 to tidy up the garbage left in the     
 code by a sloppy coder.                
                                        
   people have told us that THE GUIDE   
 is the only reason for them to keep    
 working the scene. never the less  -->

 some of those have left the scene or   
 cut down on activities. in reality,    
 THE GUIDE was just a bonus, but not    
 really the reason. we knew that.       
                                        
   i think that those who like to       
 crack, will still do that even without 
 THE GUIDE. they just have to make sure 
 to spread their wares a bit better, so 
 people will get to see their work.     
                                        
   some people have suggested to me to  
 renew the theme of THE GUIDE now t@at  
 the cracker scene has changed. this is 
 because they don´t understand why i    
 have lost the interest in doing it.

   the reason quite simply is that even 
 if i like parts of the job, the bad    
 part makes me so sick of it that the   
 effect is that i just push it off to   
 the next day and the next and so on.   
                                        
   i really could have released #25 in  
 december, but just looking over at the 
 diskbox with swopdisks made me sick.   
                                        
   i opened the box anyway and i tested 
 a disk and when i was done with it, i  
 realized that tomorrow would be a so   
 much better day to do the rest. i was  
 right, the next day i clearly saw that 
 tomorrow would be a much better day :)

   when i had done that for many weeks  
 and when i had han@ed out several      
 promises to have it done the next week 
 i finally gave up and actually did the 
 testing of the rest of the disks.      
                                        
   for this issue i tested some 240     
 versions. RAVE tested some 150, and    
 the others tested 30-40 versions in    
 all together.                          
                                        
   it is of course impossible to handle 
 THE GUIDE on only two persons doing    
 the testing especially when i am the   
 editor and people think that i am the  
 only one who can test their games!

   naturally we tried to find swoppers  
 who could help us test games, but none 
 of them were really interested and so  
 we never got any help.                 
                                        
   however, today the number of games   
 that has to be tested is not really    
 the problem. it is more like i made a  
 problem out of it. those 240 versions  
 were accumulated during 5 months.      
                                        
   now it is all too late and i just    
 don´t like to do it any longer. i      
 don´t like the games any longer since  
 they are all just copies of games that 
 are allready done, and i don´t   -->

 -------------------------------------- 
 like the new coders, because they mess 
 with the code so there are problems    
 depending on the the equipment used    
 and i don´t like the coders and the    
 crackers for their very bad language.  
                                        
   i get pissed when i get a dox file   
 that can´t be understood because of    
 the bad english. even worse when the   
 game includes bad english.             
                                        
   at is a fucking insult that they     
 think they can give us bad quality as  
 if we wouldn´t know the difference.    
 it is an insult to those coders who    
 really can do a good job or those  -->

 who bother to find help with proper    
 language.                              
                                        
   so, most of the time when i test a   
 game, i am insulted. most of it is     
 pure garbage and why in hell should i  
 waste my energy on that? i refuse to   
 support that any longer and since no   
 one else is interested in doing the    
 job for us, THE GUIDE is dead.         
                                        
   the end of something is always also  
 the start of something new. as it is   
 all in the eye of the beholder, look   
 to the possibilitaes and things will   
 look good for us all.

   so, maybe there is reason for a      
 celebration after all. THE GUIDE will  
 leave the scene and make room for new  
 stuff.                                 
                                        
   maybe now after all those years i    
 will have time to take care of all the 
 swopdisks i have accumulated over the  
 years, to list them and to share the   
 programs with others. t@ere are some   
 7000 disks to take care of, so i will  
 have my future set out for me.

   in PORTFOLIO 1, the first and the    
 last pictures were made by DANE by way 
 of putting colors to and repainting    
 two pictures that were digitized from  
 photos back in 1985.                   
                                        
   those and a great number of other    
 pix were used in several pic-shows and 
 they were used by lamers in "DEMOS"    
 made with early demo writers.          
                                        
   people tried to put colors to those  
 pictures even back then, but this is   
 not as easy as it may seem. if you try 
 it, you will find that it is fucking   
 hard to get a good result.

   so, when DANE had turned those       
 pictures into something far better     
 than the digitized pictures, he was    
 proud of it.                           
                                        
   as i said, those pictures are old    
 and i had most of them back in 1986-   
 1987. it never occured to me that the  
 scene has so many new people who have  
 never seen them.                       
                                        
   it didn´t occur to me that someone   
 who saw one of those pictures today    
 for the first time, could think that   
 DANE had been trying to cheat.

   just because i sort of took for

 pictures, it never occured to me to    
 tell DANE to make sure to declare

 by RRR about this. comparing pictures  
 in details, RRR proves that DANE       
 cheated and he demanded that DANE must 
 be banned from all charts.             
                                        
   i can understand that he thought

 i told him that indeed those pictures  
 are the same? instead the article in   
 RELAX "proves" it like the first one.

 obviously he wants it to look like we  
 are trying to hide the facts.

 can not know that those two pictures

 :(yet another sad moment for TRIAD     
   when KRAVIN decided that he would    
   give his music all the spare time    
   and put his 64 on the shelf.         
                                        
 :)SLICE over in oz decided to have     
   another go at the 64 and was put     
   back on the active list.             
                                        
 :(recently ROADRUNNA and SLICE were    
   removed from the memberlist. their   
   interest had not been high enough    
   when all came around.                

              HOME CORNER               
 -------------------------------------- 
 - MIDNIGHT MOVER got active again and  
   set up ILLUSION OF REALITY again.    
   this lasted some month and then he   
   dropped his 64 activities.           
                                        
 - VAIN joined TRIAD as a swopper and   
   gametester. he soon found that his   
   studies at the university demanded   
   more time of him than he had         
   expected and he left the scene.      
                                        
 - SAILOR is doing his military service 
   in the finnish navy. he is stationed 
   in ÅBO/TURKU on a mine sweeper. this 
   undoubtedly fits in with the recent  
   burst of games on that subject :)

 :)at TRIBUTE 94, IOPOP found some      
   soul brothers in TRIAD and following 
   the party he joined. we expect him   
   to put new life into ARISE.          
                                        
 - TANGO showed up at the party and he  
   displayed some of his work. however, 
   there is a risk that he will finnish 
   this and then be gone for good.      
                                        
 :)JFK reappeared from the dead and     
   appeared at TRIBUTE with some unused 
   demoparts from earlier days. they    
   were compiled and shown, but then    
   withdrawn to have some minor bugs    
   fixed. NO CONTROL is released now.

 - MOONCHILD is a polish cracker and    
   supplier who has joined FAIRLIGHT.   
                                        
 :)TRON/FAIRLIGHT was offered a job in  
   wales as a programmer on SEGA. he    
   declined however, since he will be   
   studying at the army technical       
   school for free.                     
                                        
 :)a litle bird whispered in my ear     
   that MOTION of NOICE instead soon    
   will be MOTION ex NOICE.             
                                        
 - bets on birds are accepted untill

   i got the following text from the    
 DERBYSHIRE RAM before christmas. i had 
 called him and told him that this was  
 really all i missed for issue # 25.    
                                        
   now, 3 month later, would it look    
 out of sync, thus better be discarded  
 or could it be salvaged? when you get  
 to the last page, you realize why i    
 couldn´t bring myself to waste it  :)

   well, here it is mid-december. it    
 seems a long time since issue #24, and 
 even longer since i last wrote any-    
 thing for THE GUIDE. since august you  
 would think there would be a lot to    
 talk about but sadly in the UK the     
 scene goes from bad to worse.          
                                        
   in the near future COMMODORE FORMAT  
 will cease publication for good. it    
 will be the last 64 only mag to be in  
 circulation, but by march or there     
 about, there will be no 64 magazine on 
 the 64 market.                         

            DERBYSHIRE VIEWS            
 -------------------------------------- 
   hopefully some small groups of users 
 will produce a FANZINE type mag just   
 to keep the 64 alive. ideas are        
 already being worked on to get this    
 mag up and running. it will be a must  
 for the small software houses left in  
 the UK to install their advertising,   
 otherwise games as we know them in the 
 UK will cease to exsist.               
                                        
   did you know that APEX sold just     
 over 6,000 copies of MONSTER IN        
 MAYHEMLAND? not bad for mail order     
 only. these greedy guys said it was    
 not enough, so they will not go ahead  
 with anymore software for the 64.

   as for scene life, only MAYHEM are   
 now active as a 64 cracking group. so, 
 i ask, what is left for us in the UK.  
                                        
   hang on a moment, what about         
 ELECTRIC BOYZ you say.....             
                                        
                                        
   the truth is that since they were    
 hyped up in the UK, they have only     
 released a small budget compilation,   
 and the "full" game HEAVENBOUND.       
                                        
   it seems our old friend EWAN GILLIES 
 has made quite a mess of things again. 
 he was staying with IRONFIST to   -->  

            DERBYSHIRE VIEWS            
 -------------------------------------- 
 make the production of games easier,   
 then EWAN or DIAMOND STUD, KING RAT,   
 call him what you will, abused the     
 hospitality given to him and knocked   
 up an enormous phonebill for RUSSEL.   
 so EWAN was booted out of the house    
 and the ELECTRIC BOYZ set up.          
                                        
   now they are in competition of       
 sorts, EWAN having taken away various  
 tools and utilities with him.          
                                        
   see, some guys never change! he has  
 ripped off more code from other guys   
 than i have ripped sheets of toilet    
 paper in my 56 years.             -->

   all is not yet lost, ELECTRIC BOYZ   
 are still hoping to produce the goods. 
 i say, the sooner the better.          
                                        
   well, we come to the end of another  
 year and another era. JERRY tells me   
 that this will most certainly be the   
 last issue of GAMER´S GUIDE ever.      
                                        
   i for one will certainly miss the    
 magazine, it is the only one i read    
 from beginning to end. i know it has   
 had it´s critics who assume that the   
 mag is a bible, but it put a breath of 
 fresh air into the scene when it was   
 most wanted.                      -->

   what a lot of guys do still not      
 realise, is that the mag is a GUIDE.   
 otherwise TRIAD would probably have    
 called it GAMERS BIBLE.                
                                        
   i have been hammered on at least two 
 occasions for "bugged games", but you  
 never saw me crying out ´this is not   
 fair´! actually i laughed, since no    
 one can or ever will be 100% perfect   
 (unless you just happen to be in       
 LEGEND), but then what do you put      
 behind the word perfect ?!             
                                        
   so, i would like to thank JERRY and  
 all past and present members of   -->

 TRIAD for producing this magazine for  
 what will now be 26 issues. they have  
 been as fair as anyone could be in     
 making it a most interesting project.  
                                        
   at times, the pressure must have     
 been really enormous, slaving through  
 literally hundreds of games. i was     
 satisfied and i have to say that i was 
 glad to make just a small contribution 
 to a most successful magazine.

   that is how my grandmother described 
 death to me. to her, death was no more 
 than the transition from this world    
 to the next one. no big deal.          
                                        
   30 years later i read the book about 
 near death experiences written by an   
 american doctor. some passages in this 
 book were just like hearing granny´s   
 words over again.                 -->

   not that i needed it, but still it   
 was nice to get the words from my      
 granny confirmed that way.             
                                        
   in spite of my conviciton, it makes  
 me so sad to see a fellow scener take  
 that trip towards the bright light. at 
 my age, i know all the things he will  
 not get the chance to do. not in this  
 life anyway and THAT is the hard part. 
                                        
   SCOPE was in TRIAD for a time. i got 
 to know him a bit through our chats on 
 the phone and when he called THE       
 STUDIO. when he left TRIAD this was so 
 he could work with his big city buds.  

             THE LAST CORNER

   some of those who were to the party  
 at EKERÖ a few weeks ago got them-     
 selves a bit of a giggle when i arived 
 when the party was over and people     
 were about to leave the place.         
                                        
   i admit that i felt stupid about it, 
 but at least i got to meet SCOPE and i 
 got a chat with him. strange how some  
 things work out for the best.          
                                        
   following an accident, SCOPE took    
 the steps round that final corner and  
 there he found the path leading up to  
 that bright light we all, sooner or    
 or later will go to.
