SCENE SPOTLIGHTER

-- ----------------------------------- --

Hello people... This is just another news-chapter. :)
Here you get to read the latest happenings and
updates from the pal-demo- and cracking-scene.
If you want to read some news from the ntsc-scene
that better check the next chapter called OVERSEAS
SCENE REPORT as UZZY gives you its latest
happenings to read there.

But now let's go with pal-news, of course...

FANTASTIC FOUR CRACKING GROUP [ger, swe, aut...]
-- ------------------------------------------------ --

BITMAN, DESPAIR, FUNGUS, GIPSY, KING, SIXX, TC and
THERION have all been very inactive within the last
months, and so they were removed from the active
memberstatus of the group. As they didn't really
left the group I put all their names in braketts.
ZYRON finally put his homepage online. You can reach
it under: HTTP://WWW.ALGONET.SE/-ZYRON
<pre>
The "Overseas" Scene Report
Compiled by UzzY of RPG

Hey kids. Is it just me, or does this require some
mood enhancers? I thought so. So, before reading
this chapter, light some french-vanilla scented
candles, put on a Sarah McLachlan CD and get ready
for some football!

Wait just a damn minute here...

Okay. I apologize for that; I experienced a
momentary lapse of reason. But I'm back now, and
I'm bringing yet another month's worth of NTSC
information and misinformation right to your
collective computer screens. Dontcha love it?
Before beginning, I should say that if you happen
to have any relevant scene information, you should
email it to me, because I write a chapter for a scene
news magazine... and news is something I like to have.
You know? In addition to news, you can also send
comments, questions, suggestions, marriage
proposals and death threats to:

uzzy(at)c64.org

I recently recieved a marriage proposal in my email,
and I must reply to it in this forum by saying: Mike,
you're a nice guy and all, but my door does not swing
that way. If you know what I mean.

On with the news.
THE NEWS
----------
- There is a rumour that Streetkiller (ex-Shade and
Unreal) may be coming back to the scene! In a
recent post to a guestbook somewhere, he said:

"I may release some stuff in the very near future..."

Is this a sign of the return of an NTSC legend? I'm
not sure, but I like to think it's possible.

- The coder formerly known as The Phantom joined
Millenium. He is still using the handle EricC.

- There's also a slight rumour that Livefire
(ex-Scibax) may be returning to the scene.
- Local-H/BCI joined SoniX as a second group.

- UzzY/RPG also joined SoniX as a second group.

- The Fatman is reported to be working on
"Misadventures Of The Fatman III."

- Want to see something funny? Then send some
email to vrfantasia(at)geocities.com. Really it's
damn funny!

That about covers the news for this month. But we
are not done quite yet... no, because there's
something I left out last month that has to be done
this month. That's right, it's....

So you guys should make changes where appropriate.
Well, once again it's time for some closing words.
I'm sort of at a loss for something to say, as I've
said it all before. I guess I should mention to stay
tuned for next month, where we should have another
interview with a prominent NTSC scener, some more
news and perhaps I'll ramble a bit like I usually do.

Oh, and guys, keep those death threats comin'.
Then you are completely right here... As this is the
charts chapter! The one and only charts in the CBM64
scene that get counted on a monthly basis and so
represent the latest and freshest opinions and
favourites of the sceners. This month's charts are
a good example... You know what I mean, when you
take a look at this list...
CREST is still on the number one spot, followed by
the guys in OXYRON. They both enstrengthen their
positions with their second co-op demo called
COMAJOB at the X98.

Highest new entry are the returned BOOZE DESIGN,
who surprised everyone with the release of the
two-sided and competition winning demo SOUL at the
X98. Nice that this showed its influences so fast in
here.
Also new here are ALBION, WRATH and W. O.W.!
After last issue's "black month" for ALPHAFLIGHT,
they got the crown again this time by putting the
dutch coop SCS +TRC to the silver medal.

LAXITY finally got off the unpopular fourth place
and entered the Top 3 while REMEMBER went straight
down from 2 to 5.

F4CG are back again and entered right at the fouth
place. Also CHROMANCE got the luck to be again in
CROSSBOW still in the lead and with his great part in
the COMAJOB demo he proved that he deserves this.

After last month's ascense FUBEN is back in this

MR. SEX won 4 places what surprises me a little bit
ALIEN still the number one and BURGLAR quite far
away from him, but still the best of the rest.

IGNORANCE lost quite some place. He fell two places
from 3 down to 5 while DIDI and MOONCHILD both
climbed one place.

STING, CBA and MANIK re-entered the chart. For them
JAYDEE, FUNGUS and B. A. had to go. But we'll see if
they can be back again next time...
VALSARY on the second place.
just wonder why... He didn't release anything for
many years now.
And also here CREST members on the top spot. MITCH
and DANE rule this chart even though nearly the
whole rest in this list changed completely!

Last issue's number two TAXIM had to leave because
of too less votes, but for him DRAX re-entered the
Top 10 at the same position.

But also PVCF re-entered highly at the 3rd place.

Funny to see three guys sharing the 10th place... :)

-- -------------------------------------------------------------------- --
This time the charts got influenced massivly by the
C64 party of the year: the X98!
You can see this clearly with the new entries of
BOOZE DESIGN and their coder HCL as well as SANDER
of FOCUS entereing the graphic charts.
This proves again that our charts really display our
readers' CURRENT opinion...
And yeah, I'm back with the LIST within' THE CREST-
happened... but so we also have no big changes
within' the scene (that's important when some of us
return after a delay... hehe).

However, there's still some work to do after working
aldready 10 hours this sunday... so let's get that
chapter finished...

Not much happened within' the BOARD-SCENE... but
hey... what a surprise... a NEW board went online!
And it's named DREAM FACTORY and it's located in the
very known 619-area... ;).
The Board is running as Support-HQ for RENEGADE
PROGRAMMING GROUP (RPG) actually.
So give it a call under: ++X-XXX-XXX-XXXX!

Nothing else happened within the last few weeks...!

The BOARDS used to create this list were again:

THE BASS PLANET : ++X-XXX-XXX-XXXX (C)+XENON WHQ
DEADZONE        : ++X-XXX-XXX-XXXX  ONSLAUGHT WHQ

For anything concerning this CHAPTER leave me mail

But now let's have a look at the RELEASES. burp!

FAIRLIGHT (swe, den, pol...) 1,6 POINTS
-------------------------------------------------------

The guys in FAIRLIGHT returned with a quite nice
role-playing game named DARKON 2 from Adventure
Tech (1,6 POINTS). The game is running already well
PAL/NTSC!
Unfortunately they don't levelpacked the game, so
that I had to reduce the amount of POINTS they got
for this one!

HITMEN (ger, swe, yu...) 0,3 POINTS
--------------------------------------------------------

The very early PREVIEW of a puzzle-game named
SECTOR (0,3 POINTS) made it under their flag to the
BOARDS.

LAXITY (ger, hol, swe...) -5,0 POINTS
--------------------------------------------------------

Their release DOUBLE TROUBLE should've been the
RELEASE OF THE MONTH... usually... but the game
turned out to be already released by DOMINATORS
back in 1991... and so they got Re-Release-Points for
this one!

MOTIV8 (den...) 0,0 POINTS
-----------------------------------------------------------

You may not believe me... but they released again 3
Games within' a month, and again they received NO
points for one of 'em... Before I give you a straight
list, I'll tell you that they're all BASIC and they all
suck.
And this time they were named: BASH YER BRAINS,
MATE IN TWO and SPIRAL SLIDE.
To much words already about these... !

Now let's go on with the complete CHARTS...

RELEASECHARTS SEPTEMBER 1998:

Place Group Points Releases
-----------------------------------------------------------
1 FAIRLIGHT 1,6 1
2 HITMEN 0,5 1
3 MOTIV8 0,0 3
4 LAXITY -5,0 1

Mmh.... lame CRACKS and lame GAMES again... . But
atleast the quality of the CRACKS itself could be
better, as you have to spent no time on Protections
(Password- or Copy-)... it seems that there are less
and less crackers active, and most Games get
cracked by the Suppliers and Traders... bah, maybe
I'm thinking to much... haha... .

Ok, that's all for this ISSUE... hope to see you next
time again, when it's THE CREST-TIME again... ;)
LEGAL PROFILE OF THE MONTH

-- ----------------------------------- --

In this chapter you will get an interview with a good
old coder. He was and still is a member of the
legendary OFFENCE crew, who made a comeback to the
scene last year. But sadly he wasn't one of the
returners... The scene didn't see very much of his
coding skills, but what he released was a real
smasher: The demo EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN. Yes, of
course he is the one and only...
>>>        YUP of OFFENCE    <<<
And now enjoy this nice profile!
(C): Hello and welcome YUP to this interview in our
magazine THE CREST!
Usually we start the profiles with the question
for some personal data about yourself in real
life... So we don't want to make it different
this time! : )

(Y): Hello HARDSEQUENCER. My real name is XXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX and I'm 26 (born 22. 02. 1972). People
who know me know that I'm one of the laziest
persons on earth (what's life without 18 hours
sleep a day?).
So my first study was computers. Afterwards I
studied some more other things (e.g.
philosophy).
At the moment I earn my money by teaching and
with "Internet-programming" (Wait for my new
homepage!) and hopefully soon with the game
I'm working on (PC).
One of my loved hobbies is dancing. I go to the
disco 3-4 times a week and dance like crazy
(often people ask me how long it took me to
learn how to dance that way. It's funny.). I also
like things like reading books, going to the
cinema or phoning (my phone-bill is too high).

(C): Ah, seems you are a hard concurence for John
Travolta, at least concerning the dancing. ;)
Anyway, you said that you are working on a
game on PC... Please tell us a bit more about
this project!

(Y): I'm sorry, but I'm not allowed to talk about it,
as I'm under NDA (somethoing like a contract).
I'll tell you more about it as soon as I can.

(C): Okay, I can understand it. Looks like this
game will be a real smasher because of the
security around it!
And do you have plans for any other projects
on the PC?

(Y): It depends on the notion, soon. But yes, we
will make a small project for the PC (with
DIRECTX), soon.

(C): Sounds interesting. So we are also looking
forward to this one!
Anyway, enough said about this thingy called
PC... ;)
Can you still call a working CBM64 your
property?

(Y): Only a broken one. But I'll buy a working one,
when I have enough money left. I still love the
C64.

(C): Enough money?!? You can get a used C64 with
1541 drive for something like 40 Dollars these
days, at least here in Germany. So you should
go and buy one NOW, hehe!
So, let's get back a bit in time to the beginning
of your time with our legendary machine... When
did you get your first C64?

(Y): It was a C128D and it was in 1988. My first
computer. I told my parents that it would be
good for school (smile). In reality I played a
lot.

(C): It's always the same with the kiddies... :)
And how and when did you enter the demo
scene then?

(Y): I think it was in 1988/89. A friend of mine and I
got some games with intros in front of them in
school. We decided to start swapping, became
YUP +BURP and wrote to some guys out of a C64
Mag. At time we also had made our first intro.
One of our contacts asked us to become
members of the group STATIC. And so we
entered the scene.

(C): And which were then all groups you have been
in?

(Y): WBC (only real members YUP +BURP), STATIC,
SHARKS, WOT (I loved this group), POWER!,
SHAPE, OFFENCE (we still exist) and in NUTS,
which was a subgroup from NATO and later
TRAITORS. In NUTS we (Y+B) had the name FAT
RAT. It was a fun project.

(C): EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN is probably the most
popular OFFENCE demo... Do you consider it your
personal favourite OFF!-demo or is there
another one you are more proud of?

(Y): As EB is the only OFF!-demo from me there is no
choice. But it includes the best part I ever
coded (although nearly nobody noticed it). It's
the part with the sideborder-scroller over
splits (the one with the woman in the bottom
wanking around).

(C): Yeah, I remember it... This one was really nice!
Respect!
You already said it... EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN was
the only demo you coded for OFF!. But can you
please name us all demo-titles OFFENCE ever
released?

(Y): On C64 there are EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN and
FLEXIBLE 1+2. Some people also count the EB-
announcement DO YOU REMEMBER and the mag
SLOWPOKE.
ORIGIN OF NUTS was released while I was in
OFFENCE but under the TRAITORS-label. But in
fact all members are in OFFENCE.

(C): I can recall watching this one, too...
In 1997 OFFENCE made a comeback in the CBM64
demo scene with the release of FLEXIBLE 1 +2.
But they haven't been noticed that much, even
though they would have deserved much more
attention... So did this pull back the returned
members? Means: Can we expet more products
from OFF! one the C64 in the future or are the
members depressed now?

(Y): This question is hard to answer because I
wasn't involved in these demos. It was done by
PREBEN. At the moment I don't know if he'll do
another one. I'll ask him. Maybe I'll do another
C64-demo in the future, when I find some time
and a new C64. The will is still unbroken.

(C): That's nice. Would be great to see something
from you once again!
Can you tell us please which members returned
to the scene in 1997? As far as I know this
were only PREBEN and PAL!?!

(Y): You know it right, it was mainly PREBEN.

(C): OFFENCE was and still is famous for its old-
school style... But demos with this style are
very rare these days... Most demos are
trackmos... What do you think of trackmos? Do
you more prefer the good old "press space"
style?

(Y): I don't like ttrackmos too much because often
there is a part at the end of the demo you
want to see and you have to wait 15 minutes
watching parts you don't want to watch again.
How about a system where you can choose the
part from amenu or the good old press space.
This must not mean that there can't be
something running while loading (in WIZUP'N'URP
for example there are parts that load the next
part while playing. But you still have to press
space to go on. Or in SLOW POKE - menu running
while loading).

(C): Thesedays also effects like vectors or
plasmas are displayed in quite low resolutions
like 4X4 or even 8X8... What do you think of
this?

(Y): I haven't seen it. I think the last C64 demo I
have seen was in 1992. But my opinion is, if it
looks good than it is good. It's great that the
people show that the C64 is a computer with
lots of abilities.

(C): There is also another new trend in demo-
coding... Many effects or demo-ideas are taken
from other platforms like PC or Amiga... SMASH
DESIGNS even went one step further and
converted a whole demo to the CBM64... They
made their own version of the FUTURE CREW's
legendary PC-demo SECOND REALITY... What is
your opinion about this idea of demo-copying?

(Y): Like said in the answer before, if it looks
good than I think it is a good think. Although in
general I prefer original stuff, there are
remakes which I'm really happy about that they
exist (as I haven't seen one of these C64-
demos, this is my opinion about remakes in the
music-business, but I think it also fits to the
demo-remaking).

(C): Yes, somehow you can relate these two things
to each other...
Did you have any idols concerning coding? If
that's the case, please give us some names!

(Y): The one who fits most to the term idol is FCS
from FINISH GOLD. He had alyready left the
scene when I entered. But his demos still live. I
also liked ASH and DAVE very much.

(C): Yeah, these ones surely were masters of their
subject.
And now please let us know your personal
favourites in the following categories!

(Y): Crackinggroup: DYNAMIC DUO
Cracker......: Sorry, it's too long ago to
remember all. Also sorry to all
the great people not mentioned
here. It would fill pages to
honour all the best from the
scene over the years.
Demogroup...: There were so many great ones
like FLASH, LIGHT...
Coder.........: FCS/FINISH GOLD
Demo..........: Look at the comment to the
crackers!
Graphician......: REDSTAR, HEIN HOLT
Composer........: GEIR TJELTA/MOZ(IC) ART
Game............: HANSE, R-TYPE
Discmagazine: SHOCK
Movie.......: HIGHLANDER
Book........: PANDEMIA SAGA from DAVE DUNCAN
(link on my home page)
Music.........: Too many to name a special.

(C): And now please make some comments about the
upcomming coders!

(Y): CROSSBOW/CREST....: Nice to phone with, great
coder.
OMEGA SUPREME/PD: I remember all of them as...
BAGDER/HORIZON..: ...really great coders. ...
BX/ORIGO DREAML. .: ...They know how to get...
ZODIAC/FLASH INC. : ...the best out of the C64. ...
SAM/BEYOND FORCE : ...They made demos which...
SCROLL/MEGASTYLE: ...are fun to watch. It...
SLAMMER/CAMELOT.: ...would have been a pitty
if they hadn't exist. A big
applause from me to all of
them.
SCAPEGOAT/TOPAZ.. : Sorry, I don't remember...
QUISS/REFLEX......: ...these guys. Maybe they
released their demos after
1992.

(C): Yes, you are right, they did.
Anyway, why did you leave the scene? Was it
just that common NO TIME thingy?!?

(Y): It was a mixture of different reasons. As you
guessed, one reason was, that I have had less
time. I never made the decision to leave the
scene. It just happened.

(C): I see...
By the way, do you think that our good old C64
is still able to compete with other platforms
like the PC, at least scenewise? And how long
do you think will it stay alive?

(Y): I still live the C64. And I think there are still
many fans out there. The C64 scene was the
greatest and I still have many friends out of
this time. OK, technically the C64 is out of
date (available now: 450 Mhz Pentium II with a
3D-card, more than 128 MB RAM and so on), but
the C64 is CULT and it will stay in mind, as long
as one of the old sceners is alive. Particularly
with the growing Internet and the great CCS64
(PC-C64-emulator).

(C): Good that you mentioned the C64 in relation to
the Internet... That leads us to another
question...
The CBM64 scene relates more and more to the
Internet nowadays. The good old boards bet
abondoned and also the mail swap is very low
these days... Do you think that the Internet is
the right way for the scene to go? Or should it
stick to its old values?

(Y): I love the Internet, it's very fast way to stay
in contact (and cheap... Want to see my phone-
bills out of my active scene-time?). And you
can reach so many people with the Internet.
Although I think it was more personal in the old
times, when you wrote letters by hand, copied
all the discs, phoned with your friends... I
think it's the right way to go. The Internet and
the old values are only communication-
technics. It's not so important how you send
something. It's important, what you send. The
scene is a big community, and friendship is the
most important factor. Taste the feeling when
you say: "We're all C64-fans, and we are all
around the world."

(C): Very true words!
Now let's get a bit more OFFENCE orientated
again. :)
OFF! marked a very special style back in the
days which you guys kept also in FLEXIBLE 1 +2.
This style combined great coding with
colourful graphics and very often well-
digitized samples! Especially the samples
arranged a great atmosphere... How did you get
this idea of using so many samples in your
demos?

(Y): FLEXIBLE 1 +2 was from PREBEN, so this question
should go to him... To the older demos which I
coded I must say that there were two real
great musicians called MOZ(IC) ART. They made
these really great tunes. I had to use them
because I loved these songs. By the way, GEIR
TJELTA from MOZ(IC) ART is still making great
music (e.g. in our Amiga-music-disk CARPE
NOCTEM).

(C): And can you please tell us what the other
members besides you are currently up to?

(Y): BURP and RED WIZ left the scene in 1992. HP is
as I know a well known DJ in France. GEIR
TJELTA is working for FUNCOM, making music
for games. PAL makes gfx for an
advertisement-company. PREBEN released
FLEXIBLE 1+2.
Unfortunately I don't know what the rest of
the old members are doing right now. (Hey guys
write me a mail!).
And FREQVIBEZ is still doing musics and some
Internet-stuff.

(C): Okay... Thank you!
Now the sad moment has come again... This
interview is at its end... So as usually you have
now the reason to greet some of your friends
or say whatever you think that should be said!

(Y): I want to greet all my friends in the scene, and
especially NUMSKULL/OFFENCE (if you can read
this in heaven), who died some weeks ago. When
you were one of his friends/contacts take
some minutes and think of him. If there are
some last words, you want to tell about him,
(C): That was all now... It was a huge pleasure to
talk to you and I must say that it really was
one of my personal favourite interviews I ever
did.
Thank you so very much for answering all
these questions so patiently!
Take care!

(Y): I thank you. Go on with your C64-mag.
My best wishes, YUP!

(C): Okay... Thanx again! Bye!
ILLEGAL PROFILE OF THE MONTH

-- ----------------------------------- --

Here you can read a small coffee-talk with another
legendary guy.
He once was a member of TRIAD and later on founded
his own group called ELITE and released a very
popular paper-magazine entitled ILLEGAL. He is...

>>> JEFF SMART of ELITE <<<

And now enjoy this interview!

(C): Hello JEFF SMART! Nice to have you here in this
small profile...
Please introduce yourself a bit to the
audience!

(J): Handle: As you already know JEFF SMART (based
on some funny comic about two chaotic spies
called CLEVER AND SMART, not that FRED CLEVER
was a lad with magic facilities in his hold and
the other one, JEFF SMART, was his partner who
always kicked in his balls - I LIKED THAT) -
raised the Bottrop/Germany way, making noise
since 1970 - born Irish in a former life -
heterosexual orientation - steady
relationship with a beautiful young lassie -
working in a frequently robbed bank - enjoying
writing for fave German football club SCHALKE
04's club magazine - don't believe in Jesus and
church - believe in the mighty power of
Guiness and certain Scotch Malt Whiskys.

(C): Nice...
Well, what did you make go out and buy a CBM64
back in the days?

(J): Getting a Commodore 64 was because at that
point of time (must have been around 1985 or
so) there was simply no other choice.
10 PRINT "WHAT ELSE?"
20 GOTO 10

(C): Hehe... And what do you think kept the C64
alive for such a long time until now? Somekind
of cult maybe?

(J): A sort of cult is always something which has
lasted successful time some years ago, isn't
it??? That's not only for the C64.

(C): And now please tell us about your scene
career! Which groups have you been in?

(J): Started up my own bunch called BOJESOFT.
joined GERMAN SPREADING SERVICE (or short
just GSS), based in Heilbronn, which has really
nothing to do with any Nazi spirits as one
might presume. Got an not-to-deny-offer from
TRIAD on my 18th birthday (no joke). For a
short period a became a SCOUSER as a member
of the SCOUSE CRACKING GROUP (SCG of course)
from Liverpool. Later I founded ELITE
together with some infamous German friends
from RADWAR, STRIKE FORCE, BEASTIE BOYS and
some international friends.
I can't really say that all that made up much
for my life afterwards, but my English really
got quite well, though I still have a very
stroinge accent 'cuz of all the nightly
telephone conferences.

(C): And are you still active on the CBM64? Or can
we expect any activity from you in the
future?

(J): You might call me active when you consider
some never updated Internet site as being
active.

(C): Okay... Better than nothing! :)
By the way, who was your favourite cracker
back in the good old days?

(J): I always admired TRIAD's main cracking maestro
JANITOR as he always put a lot of work into a
crack, he didn't only crack a game but he
played every single game through to see if
everything is working and sometimes he even
improved it.

(C): Yeah, he really was a great one in his
business.
Now please say some things about your
magazine for those who didn't know it!

(J): Actually I didn't put out a disc-magazine but a
magazine on... Well, what is it called now? Ehm...
Ah, alright, paper. Yeah, that what stucks
together after "reading" the Playboy, know
what I mean. It was called ILLEGAL like you
know, starting up with publishing your own
thoughts about games and later becoming a
sort of a voice for all pirates with monthly
charts of best cracking groups, demos and
games. Yeah, well, nowadays I think I always
had to express my creativity with writing
which I still do on a totally different topic,
which is football, mate!

(C): And how did you spread your paper-magazine?

(J): I started up writing that magazine completely
in German. But since it was spread around
Europe I turned into 100% English. Someone said
"The Germans will never learn how to speak
English" but I say that at least they have
tried.
I used to spread it at a monthly gathering, we
called it COPY PARTY, in Venlo/Holland and I
can't really remember of any bad responses
just for the cause. A circulation of about 1000
copies a month speaks for itself. Normally I
accepted Dutch beer for a copy so you can
imagine that it wasn't always that easy
finding home afterwards...

(C): Yeah, I can, hehe! But 1000 copies each issue
is really a damn lot! Respect!
Did you have any other occupations in your
scene career besides this magazine?

(J): My main object was to drink as much as I could.
Well certainly I concentrated on writing that
magazine, getting it done in time for the next
copy party. Sometimes I did some inspired
demos though my coding abilities were limited.

(C): And why did you leave the scene?

(J): Though I had made my mind up of dropping it all
as I was putting too much time into computers,
it then came to a forced sudden end as one
morning the cops rang. Well suddenly it was all
over. I got away quite well as I could prove in
court I have not been doing much apart from
running that magazine. I can remember the
judge quoting from an early issue "New tricks
to save postage. A new trick for saving
postage is to put a blank tape over the stamp
and then cleaning it for new use." And I said:
"Just read the fuck on!" (Now to be honest, I
really didn't say that)... But it went on like
"Whoever does it, is in highly risk of being
charge by the German mail as even a blind
postman can see that." Well, anyway.

(C): And now we'd like to get to know your very own
favourites in the following categories...

(J): Uh-oh, it's kind of hard to remember all these
names... :)

Crackergroup: My favourite ones have been, of
course, the ones I've been a
member in. Besides there were
some others like IKARI,
FAIRLIGHT, EAGLESOFT and
FUSION.
Magazine...: Official ones? Hmmm... ILLEGAL
ones? Ehm...
Coder........: I can think of a Dutch friend
Mario van whatshisnameagain
who was coding for a company
called THALAMUS and did some
fab shoot-em-ups for them.
Please don't ask me any names.
Artist..........: See above.
Composer........: CHARLES VAN DOOREN or
something. Fuck me, can't think
of his handle but I remember
one ROB HUBBARD who did the
score for a lot of games.
Cracker...........: JANITOR/TRIAD like I said. Great
ones I do remember (WOW)
WEETIBIX/SCG, IKARI and
GOLLUM/FAIRLIGHT
Game................: Any decent football managing
simulation.

(C): And now over to some brainstorming! Please
say what comes straight into your mind when I
say...

(J): Internet...: Old friends meeting again.
Commercial: Open, poor, be yourself once more.
(EH?)
Explorer....: Columbus
TRIAD.......: Really famous, perhaps a bit too
much.
Parties.......: puking

(C): Okay, thanks!
And we have already reached the end of this
interview. So I want to thank you for
sacrifying some of your spare-time for me.
I wish you all the best! Take care!
WORLD OF ARTS

-- ----------------------------------- --

Here we go with the graphic reviews once again. This
time I bring you tests of the competition pictures
from the X '98, of course, and the QUAST'98.
At the end of the chapter you can also find an
addition to last month's WORLD OF ARTS, because you
can read the review of the missing competition
picture from the NORTH PARTY 2.

But first let's start with a closer look at a new
small graphic-collection called...

GFXPHOBIA by FAITH DESIGN
----------------------- --

This onefiled collection features 5 FAITH
multicolour logos painted by the former FAITH
member VENOM. All logos were painted in the time
from 1992-1994, but this collection was freshly
released last month. The coding was done by PAJDA/
FAITH.

After the intro the credits are given on the screen
and after pressing space the show starts for real...

The first logo takes about half of the screen and
displays a girl's face on the left side and of course
a FAITH logo on the right side.
The girl's face is quite ugly, it features nearly no
colourfadings, what doesn't look good. The painter
also made a mistake with her left eye, but that's not
the worst...
The logo itself is painted in the typical "polish"
logo style, means it features chessboards,
triangles and other stuff as fill-in. The outlines of
letters are quite boring, and the shapes aren't
faded. The coolourfadings generally are rarely set
and only the quite huge number of used colours
makes this logo look a bit better.
> 17%

The next logo is mainly held in green and covers
about a third of the screen. The fill-ins are the
same in each letter, what isn't that good, of course.
The colourfadings and the outlines are okay, but
nothing more.
> 28%

Then we can see another FAITH logo taking something
like a third of the screen. The fill-ins are copied
again, even though here in every second letter only.
The letters get surrounded by some nice mainly
brown colourfadings at the top. The letterforms are
well-known, usual and often used style, quite
boring and simple in my opinion. But still this is this
show's best piece...
> 37%

Now we get to see another logo with the same size.
The fill-in of the letters is again the same in every
one of them. In the background is somekind of
board, at least the outlines of it, including the
same colours. The fadings themselves are okay, but
all in all this logo is again too boring and simple.
> 23%

The last logo is the smallest, covering only about a
fifth of the screen. It shows the FAITH letters
standing on a plain blue board. The letterforms are
uninteresting again and the shapes aren't faded in
any way. The fill-in is copied again.
> 11%

That were all logos in this collection. And I think it
is better so...
Overall I can say that this show deserves... 23% !
----
And when I think about it again, even this is maybe
too much, because all the logos lacked a lot of
inspiration, ideas and also technique.

So, if you missed this collection, then you needn't
worry... You didn't miss anything!

COMPETITION PICTURES FROM THE X '98
-- ------------------------------ --

At the pure C64 party event of the year got released
only 6 graphics. And the jury ranked them in the
competition results as follows...

1. "COMPOPIC" by SANDER/FOCUS
2. "ELDER DRAGON" by AMN/ANARCHY
3. "BRAINSTORM" by HI-LITE/PADUA
4. "TOK TOK" by GENIUS/ex-PARADIZE
5. "LETHAL SENSATION" by KATON/LEPSI DE/ARISE
6. "SHEBA" by SEBA/PLUSH

And now let's take a closer look at all graphics...

"COMPOPIC" by SANDER/FOCUS
- ---------------------- -
Wow, a picture from a FOCUS member... I never thought
that this would happen to me again... :)
Anyway, this one is a Koala picture showing two
squares with two women's faces in them. The
background behind these faces is filled by some
bubbles and colourfadings painted in somekind of
"pseudo-interlace" style, means: only every second
line is painted, the other lines are black. Also the
left face is painted in the same style, what looks
quite nice and original here.
The right face is very colourful and well-faded and
it looks like FLI, but in fact it is Koala! Great!
All in all I can say that this picture kicks your butt
with a good colourchoice and fantastic fadings
aswell. It is technically nearly perfect! The only
thing that bugs me about this picture is the fact
that the "real" picture, these two faces" are too
small, they take only about half of the screen. That
is too less to get a "highlight"-rating...
> 74%

"ELDER DRAGON" by AMN/ANARCHY
- ------------------------- -
This is a Multilace fullscreener and displays a
sitting dragon in his lair.
The whole piece flickers a damn lot and also the
fadings aren't the best. Another bad thing is the
ugly motif... I don't like it.
> 39%

"BRAINSTORM" by HI-LITE/PADUA
- ------------------------- -
The third place from the party is an Interlace-FLI
piece showing a woman's face coming out of an
animation net. It takes about two third of the
screen and is a really good idea concerning the
motif.
But technically seen it is below average. The fadings
and shapes were done badly and also the
possibilities of the I-FLI mode weren't used. I guess
even Koala would have been enough for this!
> 51%

"TOK TOK" by GENIUS/ex-PARADIZE
- ---------------------------------------------- -
Seems the old-school really got some revival at that
party... :)
This is a fun-picture in Koala mode giving you a
comic styled rooster saying TOK TOK.
The motif is quite funny and a good idea. The shapes
weren't done well, because they werent faded.
You can't find colourfadings within the rooster, but
that is okay, because this is comic style, which
needn't feature such stuff.
> 40%

"LETHAL SENSATION" by KATON/LEPSI DE/ARISE
- --------------------------------------------- -
Again an Interlace-FLI piece. This one is about two
thirds of the screen big and features a fantasy
picture. It shows two semi-naked women with one of
them holding a sword in one hand and a cut man's
head in the other.
Everyone who knows KATON's style can guess that
also this picture is very colourful again and that
also the fadings were well done again.
But this time he didn't make some things that good.
For example the one woman's face is quite ugly and
the other woman's breasts look really strange.
Another thing that is going on my nerves is the
massive flickering.
But still this is a quite good picture... I wonder why
the jury rated it so low...
> 69%

"SHEBA" by SEBA/PLUSH
- ----------------- -
The last place fom the X '98 isn't that bad at all. It
was done in the often underrated Hires mode and
shows a Manga-styled tiger-girl kneeing. The left
and the right part of the screen are filled with some
tiger-stripes.
The girl itself was well-painted, but it really is a bit
too small and maybe a bit too simple. SEBA should
have invested some more time to add some other
things to the screen, and then this piece would have
been really nice.
So I can give only...
> 47%

That were all pictures. So in my opinion the results
should have looked this way...

1. "COMPOPIC" by SANDER/FOCUS 74%
2. "LETHAL SENSATION" by KATON/LEPSI DE/ARISE 69%
3. "BRAINSTORM" by HI-LITE/PADUA 51%
4. "SHEBA" by SEBA/PLUSH 47%
5. "TOK TOK" by GENIUS/ex-PARADIZE 40%
6. "ELDER DRAGON" by AMN/ANARCHY 39%

So I mist say that I really can't understand some
decision of the jury, for example the high rating of
AMN's picture.
But all in all these pictures are worth being checked
out by you, especially the ones from SANDER and
KATON.

COMPETITION GRAPHICS FROM THE QUAST '98
-------------------------------------- --

At this polish party in the beginning of August the
results of the graphic competition were these...

1. "COMPOPIC" by STINGER +KHEELA/SAMAR
2. "FLY HORSE" by KATON/LEPSI DE/ARISE
3. "RIDER" by SEBALOZ/LEPSI DE

Now let's see what I have to say about every
picture itself...

"COMPOPIC" by STINGER +KHEELA/SAMAR
- -------------------------------- -
This coop-graphic from STINGER and his sister( ! )
KHEELA was done in Interlace-FLI and covers the
whole screen. You can see a warrior's face and a
sword. His hair is blue, what is a bit strange, but
looks okay here.
The colourfadings were well done and also the
flickering is okay.
The painters left a little bug on the warrior's
throat, but it isn't that important.
The background-filling is maybe a bit too easy,
because it only let's you guess that this should be a
lair.
> 72%

"FLY HORSE" by KATON/LEPSI DE/ARISE
- --------------------------------------------- -
Again an I-FLI piccy out of the hands of KATON. This
one take sabout two thirds of the screen and
displays a semi-naked female warrior with a sword in
one of her hands, sitting on a flying horse in front
of the space with planets and stars.
As usually in KATON's pieces the colours and their
fadings are excellent, as well as the shapes.
The background is a bit too empty in my opinion and
also the planet behind the horse would have needed
some more details to make this picture look a bit
better.
> 64%

"RIDER" by SEBALOZ/LEPSI DE
- ---------------------------------------- -
The leader of the polish demo group LEPSI competed
again with a Multi-laced fullscreen picture, and
again with his usual lightred background. You can
see a rider on something like a huge exes or
whatever this should be. It is really undefinable.
The fadings and shapes are well-done again, but the
motif is not to figure out and so ugly, that even
this can not cause a higher rating than...
> 21%

So my personal ranking looks then like this...

1. "COMPOPIC" by STINGER +KHEELA/SAMAR 72%
2. "FLY HORSE" by KATON/LEPSI DE/ARISE 64%
3. "RIDER" by SEBALOZ/LEPSI DE 21%

Well, exactly the same ranking as in the official
results... That doesn't happen often! But it wasn't
that hard with only three pictures... :)

ADDITIONAL GRAPHIC FROM NORTH PARTY 2
-- -------------------------------- --

I reviewed the graphics from the NORTH PARTY 2
already last issue, but I missed one picture,
because I didn't have a cpoy of it. But now I finally
got it, so I want to give you a closer look at it
aswell, of course.

FENEK of KRECIKI
- ------------ -
This Interlace-FLI picture takes about two thirds of
the screen and displays a pot that looks like edited
with a "wind"-filter. Hard to describe...
The piccy is quite colourful, but the fadings were
not done that well. Also motif doesn't appeal to me
very much, it looks quite unrealistic. I don't like
this piece that much...
> 38%

Okay... That was all for the graphic-reviews in this
issue. See you all again next time!

HARDSEQUENCER
WORLD OF MUSIC

-- ----------------------------------- --

Hiyas people! This time we have again some reviews
of competition musics. In this edition I (THE ALIEN)
took a closer look at the musics from the X'98 held
in Velfhoek/Holland from 19th of September to the
21st of September 1998.

The music competition results (made by a jury) were
like this...

01. "X'98 TUNE" by REYN OUWEHAND
02. "TOTAL CONTROL" by MOPPE/ONEWAY
03. "GLOBAL CONQUEST 2" by VINCENT VOOIS/FOCUS
04. "DIMPLE DIN" by ZYRON/F4CG/NOSTALGIA
05. "PING REPLY" by GRG/SHAPE
06. "GLORY DAYS" by BORDEAUX/ACTIVE
"COMPOTUNE" by GROEPAZ/HITMEN
08. "SNIFTERS" by FANTA/OXYRON/BASS
09. "ACCIDENTIAL" by RORSCHACH/PADUA/NN
10. "OH NOSTALGIA" by S.U.C.K./ROLE/SATAKI
11. "INTUNE" by MR. MOUSE/XENTAX
12. "A.D.M.B." by ECHO/PLUSH/BASS
13. "CROSS-TUNE" by SONEY/SMASH DES.
14. "YOUTHFUL" by BZYK/SAMAR/LEPSI DE

But now let's take a closer look at all the entries...

"X'98 TUNE" by REYN OUWEHAND
- ---------------------------- -
Okay, first of all I was really surprised that REYN
OUWEHAND made something new on the C64. Let's hope
he will start to do some more on our lovely machine.
But now let's go over to his music.
His music starts with a sad melody... The whole tune
has a sad touch, but the melody is so nice. After the
X98 I couldn't get the melody out of my mind. The
instruments are also good.
All in all he did a good job after doing nothing for
such a long time.
> 86%

"TOTAL CONTROL" by MOPPE/ONEWAY
- ----------------------------------------------- -
Well, here we go on with a very nice music. The
instruments are quite okay. The melody is good, too.
And his tune has also some variation, so you don't
get bored that fast! I hope to hear some more from
MOPPE in the future as I think I've never heard
something from him before, at least I don't
remember...
> 74%

"GLOBAL CONQUEST 2" by VINCENT VOOIS/FOCUS
- -------------------------------------------- -
So, here we have really a very good music. First of
all the instruments are done very well. Secondly the
melody is quite nice and the whole tune has a lot of
variation. Well, yeah! He made very good echos in his
tune which sounds very good. It's really a nice tune
that doesn't bore you that fast.
> 85%

"DIMPLE DIN" by ZYRON/F4CG/NOSTALGIA/OXSID PLAN.
- -------------------------------------------- -
Here we have a tune by ZYRON, and what can I say
about this song?!? Well, when Sid and Drigs unite or
what!? Hehe... No, but this tune sounds like it was
done by a beginner. The instruments are okay, but
the melody (if you can call it so!?!) sounds very
strange. A really unoriginal tune that really
disappointed me as I really know better musics from
him!?! I don't take this tune too serious at all as I
know he can do it a lot better! Only some parts of
his music are listenable because they don't sound
strange!
> 17%

"PING REPLY" by GLENN RUNE GALLEFOS/SHAPE
- ------------------------------------- -
This music has a nice start with very good echos!
The instruments and the filters are quite good.
Glenn made a kind of techno music but with a good
melody and some variation in it (not like the usual
techno musics). It really makes fun to listen to this
tune because of this very good beat and all other
stuff! The drums are done so well. No more to say
about it...
> 76%
"GLORY DAYS" by BORDEAUX/ACTIVE
- --------------------------- -
This music sounds like the same says a bit
oldskoolish. Well, in my opinion this music is done a
bit too simple. The melody is nice but also too easy.
All in all it is nice to listen to this tune, but it bores
me after a while. The instruments are really okay
and that's all about this tune. I miss some variation
in this tune and some more originality in the melody.
> 63%

"COMPOTUNE" by GROEPAZ/HITMEN
- ------------------------- -
This music was done in GROEPAZ' own player. Some of
the instruments are good and others aren't done
that well. The music has no melody and also the
drums are missing. There is no variation in the music
aswell. I don't like this music that much, maybe
because I don't like the style or something...
> 27%

"SNIFTERS" by FANTA/OXYRON/BASS
- ---------------------------------------------- -
Well, this time FANTA tried his luck with an
oldskoolish tune. The instruments were all done in an
oldskoolish way and are very nice. The melody is
good but all in all I prefer his other musics. Maybe
there is a bit too less variation in it.
> 65%
"ACCIDENTIAL" by RORSCHACH/PADUA/NO NAME
- ----------------------------------------------- -
So, here we have another good music again. The
instruments are good and also the melody is very
nice. Also it's nice that this tune has some variation.
Negative is that the melody repeats too often. All in
all a really good music.
> 64%
- -------------------------------------------------------- -
Here we have a techno music. The instruments are
quite good. This music has some very good ideas in it
but I miss something. Maybe a better melody wouldn't
be that bad. I really wonder that I don't dislike this
music, as most of all I don't like those techno
musics. This music has also some variation that
makes the tune better and better. No, let me be
objective. Some parts of the music are done very
well, but on the other hand other parts aren't that
good. The ending is really disappointing and can be
done in a better way.
> 57%
- -------------------------------------------- -
Here we have another oldskoolish music. The
instruments are okay. The melody is okay in my
opinion. But I miss the last kick... Also this music has
some variation, but I miss the kick! All in all it's
average.
> 54%
- ------------------------------------------------------------ -
This music isn't that good in my opinion. Sometimes it
sounds like my SID fucks up because of changing the
volume (or something) in the tune. I don't like this
tune because I miss a better melody, more variation
and... Well, some of the instruments are okay and
that's it... It's under average!
> 32%
- --------------------------------------------- -
Here we go again... This time the instruments are
again 50:50. The melody isn't very good and also I
miss again some more variation. Too bad, some
musicians really have good ideas but they don't do
the best out of it! Again a music under average!
> 36%
"YOUTHFUL" by BZYK/SAMAR/LEPSI DE
- ----------------------------- -
Okay, here we have a music with really good
instruments and filters. The music itself is good but
I miss a melody (there is no). This music is maybe
something for a mag, but not for a music
competition. Also there is no variation in the tune.
Too bad, again a good idea wasn't converted good
enough. :(
Because of this this tune is only average.
> 45%

So, that's all about the entries of the X98 music
competition. Let's go over to my personal rankings...

So no big differences to the competition results, at
least concerning the first bunch of places...
PARTY EVENT COVERAGE

-- ----------------------------------- --

THE CBM64 party of the year is over... Of course I
mean the X98. And it had a huge influence on the
scene, at least with the nice output of demos. We
give you a report from that party! Special thanks
must go for this one to BLACK DUKE/EXCESS! Thank
you Tassilo!
At the end of this chapter you can also find some
infos on some upcomming parties... Don't miss this!

But now let's start with the X98-report...

REPORT FROM THE X '98
-- --------------- --

This is BLACK DUKE/EXCESS typing aimed with an old
dictionary from the year 1929 (no joke!!) to let you,
dear readers, take a small insight into the
happenings of this year's X-party, X98, held by the
guys from SUCCESS AND THE RULING COMPANY.

I discussed the whole situation with my group-mates
and we came to the conclusion that I should come to
Muenster on Friday, the 18th October, at 18:25
o'clock. RHX would await me there together with
SPINBALLand GHOST. So I got into a squeeze devery
information how to come as fast as possible to
Muenster out of the conductor (poor man, I was
really not the only one missing his corresponding
train :) ). I decided to get out of this train in
Frankfurt, made a short phonecall to RHX (He was of
course already on his way, bah!) and took a train
going directly from Frankfurt to Muenster, always
on my mind that I would arrive more than one hour
too late as planned. I always thought that RHX,
SPINBALL and GHOST had already left for Holland for
sure when I would arrive... But they hadn't!

After the short, but very loud greeting-ceremony
and a fast dinner at McDonald's in Muenster we left
for the party-place. Some kilometres and beers (poor
RHX, he had to drive :) ) later we passed the dutch-
german-border (if you can call it a border nowadays)
and looked for Hengelo. Although we took here
another time the wrong way, we managed to find
Hengelo...

At the party-place we had to pay an entrance-fee of
100 dutchbucks and named our handles for the
organizer's list, by the way, this was the last
situation I saw my fellow-travellers tolerably
sober...

I hardly was in the party-room as I already spotted
DIDI/LAXITY and I immediately decided to have a small
talk with him, as I was really sure that he hadn't the
box of beer here he owes me for ages.
I thought that this then was the right time to check
one of the dutch brewing out, the best thing was
that every drink and food was now - after paying
the 100 florin entrance-fee - for free. So I took
really advantage of that fact as I examined the hall.

There were only a few Commodores (I would estimate
there an amount of about 10) and also not too many
people. The room was scantily furnished either,
there were two table-tennis-tables and two kicker-
tables in the middle of it and two walls were fully
equiped with normal tables were the Commies stood
on. The third side of the room was used a a bar
where you were able to order your essential drinks
and also stuff like potatochips.

To be honest there didn't happen really much that
night and I won't bore you with enumerating my beer-
consumption. I just played a bit ENFORCER, watched
didiane of the quiet (except the very strange
noises: chrrrrr! :) ) sleeping-rooms, with floor-beds
and I fell into a deep sleep...

On the next morning I decided to start the day with a
real revitalising shower (Ooooohh, Abdul! Got it?? :) )
and went for breakfast. As I entered the party-room
I recognized already some action goint on there, but
the only thing I really wanted in this situation was a
nice cup of tea and something to eat. You were able
to chose between coffee, tea and beer (really, some
guys seem to need it at any time :) ) and different
toasts. After you've chosen your drink, fetched
some toasts and got a plate together with a knife,
you were able to take seat on the big breakfast-
table. As they had no jam or marmalade there I
decided to have my toasts with those slices of cold
meat lying around on the table. Okey, the
breakfast had accomplished it s purpose and so I
focused my attention to the party again.

On this day it was nearly impossible to get a C64,
because the demo-makers had occupied all of them!
The soccer game the organizers had planned for this
afternoon didn't take place because of the heavy
rain outside and so everybody was inside the party-
room and you could recognize easily that the people
became slowly more and more - if I believe the
sceners-list released by the organizers after the
party the total amount of sceners being at the
party was 104. And also some Commodores were added
to the few that stood there since Friday.

I don't really know the time anymore as a lot of
party-people left their computers and went straight
to the other side of the party-room. At first I had no
ideao what could be the reason for that strange
behaviour, but as I saw the first with plates filled
with something undefinable walking to the next
tables, it was totally clear: dinner! It looked really
not very appetizing (looked at NED's photos at
http://accept.to :) ) but it tasted fine!

After this short break the party went on as usual,
some were coding, others painted or composed and
the organizers did some preparations for the
compos. They installed a projector and a biiiig white
sheet (it sized about one metre by one metre) on a
wall of the party-room.
You didn't have to be at the party to take part in
the competitions. You just had to upload your work
to THE DIGITAl DUNGEON before the deadline. The
quality of the tunes was different, some great ones,
then all the pictures were without exception of a
pretty high standard.

Over to the demo compo: What a pity that GRAHAM
didn't manage to finish his demo in time, in spite of
the postponed deadline. So unfortunately no entry
from CREST +OXYRON here.

After the show the jury went to work, as meanwhile
the rest of the party-people resumed their normal
activities, late at night the jury presented their
results.

Then I went to catch a few hours of sleep before
the return-journey. After I woke up I took my
urgently needed shower and went for breakfast.
Then DIDI forced me to type for the party-scroller
and so I did for a while.
Then I copied the demos for my personal archives
and took leave of the friends I made at the party, I
fetched my stuff and went to RHX's car.
We got one more passenger because LETHAL/LAGACY
drove with us back to Muenster, so it was quite
narrow inside the car. We listened to the WOW-Audio-
Cd GHOST had bought and so we left the Netherlands.

My return-journey to Bavaria was quite calm and so
I arrived about half past 11 pm at home. A pretty
long trip but it was worth it.

To come to an end I will give you my small advantage-
disadvantage-list of the X-98:

+ entrance fee included free drinks and food
+ clean toilets and showers
+ quiet sleeping rooms
+ great fun :)
- only three different compos
- no influence of the ordinary audience for the
compo-results

But all in all I must admit that it was a real great
party and I regret no single minute being there,

I hope you enjoyed reading this party-report at
least a bit and give me a reaction if you want to...
