Hello! dkdcfkd interesting dkdcfkd site!

Very nice site!

==Monthly Releases==
<pre>
THE MONTHLY RELEASES by COUNT ZERO/TALENT
-------------------------------------------
Another month has passed on, and it seems it was a rather
boring one. Just a couple of games were done lately, and
therefore this will be a rather short edition of your favourite
part of THE PULSE MAGAZINE.

Surprises are coming and going in the American scene these
days, as nearly no month passes on without another board
based group picking up or going down. I am glad to be able to
have one more American group this time though, but you will
be able to read all about this yourself in this months edition
of Monthly Releases.

Another surprise was AVANTGARDE this month, with some
kind of easy going attitude after months of domination in
the release charts.

And finally THE PULSE has got some competition with the
new magazine DOMINATION, which also features a release
chart. I have no idea how it will turn out though, but I will
wish the editor of DOMINATION, JAZZCAT, the best of luck
in editing this magazine in the future.

-----
THE US SCENE
-----------
In the first place, EMPIRE had a short guest appearance
with a fix. But unfortunately the game they released was put
out before by MOTIV 8 on NTSC. Therefore a bit of bad luck
for them.

Maybe someone should give them the games exclusively!

TSM only did one game this time and did not even have to fix
it. In other words, it was just an intro-link job done by TSM.
But it was still nice to see something from them nonetheless!

DEMONIX released along with TRC+SCS the worst game this
month. But afterall they did something. It is great to see them
back in the scene as well!

ARISTOCRACY is a brand new group mainly consisting of
members from PSI. PSI died lately, and ART is what came out
of it. They managed to fix one game, and I guess they will
continue - but only time will tell!

That is all for this months US scene update, and we are gone
for the charts with all their high and low risings!
-----
To cut a long story short I will explain a couple of things
before I start.

Last months CHROMANCE ranking was once again hit by a
little bug from me. It must be a curse. Anyway, the preview I
accidently awarded AFL will remain an AFL release and
CHROMANCE will not gain points this issue as they normally
would have earned a (-1) for putting out the intro of
WHEEL OF FORTUNE after the game. No matter if it was their
fault or the fixer's fault.

LEGEND was found guilty for ripping off a game from AFL and
releasing it. The whole discussion may be followed on one of
the major boards. It seems to be far too confusing to explain
here, but you will be able to read a report about it in this
months edition of GLOBAL REPORT written by SKINHEAD.
But in all fairness, the points were awarded to ALPHA FLIGHT
as they should have been - so there you go.

The Judge has spoken like a wise man - coming up the list of
the games released in August.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
MONTHLY RELEASES
Written by COUNT ZERO/TALENT
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
ALPHA FLIGHT (Ger, Hol, USA, etc.) (13.2 Points/2.Rank)
---------------------------------------------
They started their Holiday race with one of the worst games
this month. MASTERMIND 64 (3.8) which was originally sold
by GOODSOFT as a Public Domain game. Nevertheless they
continued with DOZO'S QUEST PRV (0.3) and the fixed version
of ROBOX (4.3) from CP Verlag. Later on followed the strange
release of MYSTERY (4.4) of which LEGEND did the rip-off.
The AFL version was 100% fixed though, the [L] version seems
to have some crashing occurance.
Their final strike was FLEX PRV (0.4) on which they finished
up the month.

AVANTGARDE (Ger, UK, USA) (11.9 Points/3.Rank)
---------------------------------------------
Looks like they were on holidays. ESCAPE FROM ARTH (4.9)
from VISUALIZE and BUBBLE MANIA (4.3) from ARTIC DESIGN
made it in the first two weeks. After they stocked up their
Line-Up with the former TRC+SCS member STEVE they also
got ahold of FAST FUTURE (2.7) on which they share the
points with LASER.

More to come ---

CHROMANCE (Hun, USA, Pol) (5.6 Points/6.Rank)
---------------------------------------------
Since BlueBox died from Hungary they seem to have stopped
calling out for most of the time. Especially HOMEBOY, a caller
seen on each board every day is missing to spread all the
wares. They recently put out NEWCOMER PRV (0.9) a 2-sided
preview. The full game is supposed to have 12 (!) sides (Make
sure to send it by mail, there is no way I will leech this!).
As said before the WHEEL OF FORTUNE intro completes last
months WHEEL OF FORTUNE and finally TRICK (4.7) from
ROM SOFTWARE was put out by them, fixed by the rising guys
in ARISTOCRACY. A short comment for this: It is a wierd
release again, as ROM SOFTWARE went bankrupt 1.5 years ago
already.

F4CG (Bel, Pol, USA, etc.) (6.8 Points/5.Rank)
---------------------------------------------
Along with TSM, SOLAR's tribe managed to release the rather
well translated DYLAN DOG (5.1), which is NOT the same one
than the one released before. Following this were a couple
of previews, just like MINEFIELD PRV (0.4), SLATERMAN
PREVIEW (0.5), SPOOK PRV (0.3) and finally JUMP PRV (0.5).
JUMP PRV looks EXACTLY like a rip-off of SALIVA-KID
though. Hope no full game of this will come out!

LASER (UK, USA) (2.7 Points/7.Rank)
---------------------------------------------
Along with AVANTGARDE they released FAST FUTURE (2.7).
It's some kinda ALLEYKAT clone and looks pretty nice, but
gets boring after a while.

MOTIV 8 (Den, Ger, USA,etc.) (11.7 Points/4.Rank)
---------------------------------------------
They reached for a high spot again and managed to get the
fourth place. For some people it is obviously a miracle how
they manage to keep up the steady wares flow each month.
Always reaching for one of the better places!
TECHNO PLYN (3.6) from 59 PRODUCTS was their first one,
even getting fixed afterwards. Another one, but not raising
the quality that much was FIELDS OF HADES (4.4) by
NINJUTSU DESIGN. For the few musicians out there they
spread a DMC 5.1 PACK (-) which is rather good, so grab it!
Right after EXCESS put out the PAL version they came up
with the fixed one : STEEL HEROS (3.3) from CP VERLAG.
This game is annoying, do not leech it.
WAR DEAL PRV turned out to be a fake. This actually shows
that there's nobody left for a decent rag, but instead people
come up with stupid garbage.

TRC+SCS (Hol, Ger, USA, etc.) (17.1 Points/1.Rank)
---------------------------------------------
The Dutch duo finally made it to the well deserved first spot.
Starting off with the extremely lame game MAYDAY (3.7)
fixed by DEMONIX and the PAL version of CJ 4 (3.1) from
DIRECT DESIGNS they had a good one. Due to the unfixed
version of CJ they lost STEVE though.
BOUND (4.3) from DIRECT DESIGNS as well, is a lame Arkanoid
clone, lowering the quality again.
But all of a sudden they fired the bird with QUEENS (5.2)
from NEW ENTRY, which was fixed by CBA.
(This game might look simple, but is really nice, check it
out!).
A final touch to their image they gave with the well designed
DEFENDER clone STARBURST PRV (0.8).

Was that all? I am afriad so. Just 15 games along with a lot
of bad ones this month was released. Let us hope that the
future will bring us a little more stuff to enjoy.

Move your lazy asses!!
I see that there are not that many games left, but still some
groups like AVT are able to release a lot of quality games.
Where have the standards gone ???
MAYDAY, WAR DEAL, etc. GET FUCKIN' REAL!

Otherwise we really gotta go for harder stuff and only
full pricers will get counted in the future ... :)

Nah, C'mon ... 15 games this month - 15 low budgets !!!

It depends on YOU the reader if people keep on coding,
painting and composing for games ... If YOU can't do one
of these things, fuckin' LEARN 'em ...

Bah ...
==Satirica==
<pre>
SATIRICA - THE AUTOPSY OF THE SCENE
-----------------------------------
Now that you have joined us, we can get ready for another
edition of the worst pyle of shit written since the time JESUS
sat down with a couple of bankers and financed his new book.

You have entered the domains of SATIRICA, the place where
anything can happen - and do happen. This is where we have
no restraints, but a vivid imagination. This is satire that
bites hard, put together by General Editor, DUKE.

IMPORTANT STATEMENT:
Due to the overwhelming success of SATIRICA, a lot of other
magazines has started doing a satiric chapter of their own.
We would like to encourage the readers to avoid these sorry
magazines though, as their satiric chapters are based on this
chapter - idea and state of mind. Remember, SATIRICA is the
ORIGINAL satiric chapter in the scene!

The stories included in SATIRICA are pure fiction and based
on a satiric state of mind. SATIRICA was not written to offend
any of you, but to pass on a smile in these trying times. Some
of what is written in SATIRICA is based on actual news, then
turned around 180 degrees to put together a totally crazy and
obscure story. I hope you like it!
* RICHIE recently returned to the scene after having
officially left the scene. During the last month, RICHIE have
stated to all living magazines, that he had not made a full
comeback (whatever that would mean), but was only going to
call a board or two whenever he felt like it (like he did in
his active days!?!). The story got even more strange, as he
revealed his discontent in the latest edition of ROOFS
ILLUSTRATED, about being left out of the updated AVT
member-status. According to DEFF/AVT, he was of the idea
that RICHIE was nolonger interested in being a part of AVT,
much less interested in making any contributions with the
work it requires to keep a group going. RICHIE replied in a
razy tone "You should not take me serious. When I say YES,
you know I mean NO".
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
* PHUN SOFT INCORPORATED is dead and burried. A shocked
member of the group explained to GRAVE-DIGGERS CO. how he
was unaware the group was dieing, maybe it happened some-
where in between changing the groups' name into PHUCKIN'
STONED IMP., he just did not know. ASMODEUS and STYX was
equally sad and shocked, but they claimed they were glad they
had other projects going, otherwise it might have been too
hard to handle - they were off to start off a new group called
ARISISCRAZY.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
* COUNT ZERO of TALENT appears to have gotten over his
major drinking problem. According to SCENE ZEITUNG in
Holland (?), COUNT ZERO signed up in the famous organisation
AA to get to the buttom of his bad habbit. But it appeared
SCENE ZEITUNG misunderstood the true intentions of COUNT
ZERO, as he joined up with AA (Active Alcoholics), meaning he
was only interested in increasing instead of decreasing his
drinking. COUNT ZERO told TALENTED DRUNKS how he was
having difficulties matching his income with his demand, but
now that he was a member of AA he was sure to get credits on
CARLSBERG beer 24 hours a day (special offer on TALENT
conferences). The founder of AA, ARROGANCE/SCS+TRC,
was happy to sign on yet another member, "We already got a
lot of members, such as JAZZCAT, PEACEMAKER and all
members from SCS+TRC and TALENT, except from BOD of
course! If you want to become a member, simply send a picture
of yourself after having drunk 20 beers to AA!
NATURES CORNER - WATCHING THE GRASS TURN GREY
---------------------------------------------
Welcome to another issue of the glamorous NATURES CORNER
hosted by your favourite pervert POWERPLANT of LEGEND.

Mjellow. This month I have invited BOD of TALENT to discuss
the consequence of fire in the home. It is a very actual topic,
now with BEAVIS and BUTTHEAD running on everybody's tv's.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
PWP: You recently had your library burned down, that must
truly have been a devistating blow!

BOD: Sigh, yes. Both books were gone before I could stop
the incredible fire. It was an experience I must admit I
prefer not to recall, just like the time AYCEE told me
she prefered men with hair on their chest - just like
I do my partners!

PWP: Yes, well, ehrm. But hey Darren, come on. There is more
to life than literature and books, and even if you did
loose two books, it is not the end of the world!

BOD: That's easy for you to say. I still had not painted the
second book through yet!

chart of the best movies in the eyes of the 64 sceners.

ACTION JACKSON
(hehe.. Not really.. Wooops!)
* Last month we was able to tell a shocking tale, which
revealed how CHOTAIRE/PANDORA was traveling all over the
world to meet a nice girl, one he could talk to about his deep
thoughts. After returning to Germany from a stressful trip
to CHILE (which was quite the failure) CHOTAIRE announced
on LARRY SING LIVE, CNN, that he had finally met his bride
to be. CHOTAIRE said in a happy, almost sad tone "She is
perfect, I am glad I am such a hunk, she just couldn't resist
me". CHOTAIRE is planning on holding an open weeding in
Germany (free food for everyone, limited portion for AIRWOLF
though) with his future bride, IMA DORK from Dusseldorf.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
* The English phreaker and cracker STEVE/SCS+TRC left
to join up with AVANTGARDE. According to STEVE, he was a
bit tired of being such a SUCCESS, and therefore joined up
with AVANTGARDE. In truth he left SUCCESS because he lost
a bet with MOREN about who was best at English - apparently
he was better (?). Now try and see if you can make logic out
of that story - if you can, send a picture of your mom putting
you in bed with a red goblin-hat, and we will sell it to the
papers for you award. Now how is that?!
The ORIGINAL Satiric chapter
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
* The infamous PETER of AVANTGARDE is back in the scene
after a global trip with his organisation GREENPEACE. PETER
announced how he was working in CUBA, making sure the
Cubans left for America in sail-boards, so they would not hurt
nature by using gasoline. "It was great fun, I plan on doing it
again sometime soon!". Most of the Cubans who left in sail-
boats never reached their destination though, only going 2
miles per hour in their boats, dieing due to lack of food.
PETER was still in a cheerful mood, "To think I saved a fish
or two because of my efforts, really makes me feel good".
PETER plan on making a major promotional effort for AVT in
the near future, using oil to write AVANTGARDE in the
Atlantic ocean so it is readable even from the moon.

DOES THIS AREA REMIND YOU OF PROPAGANDA?

* The pro/scene magazine REVEALED produced by CAMELOT
have taken a turn to the worse in the last couple of months.
It appears the reason why REVEALED is still delayed, is due
to the General Editor KRING, having great difficulties making
up his mind about the look of their new outfit. In a recorded
conversation from KRING and ROB, we overheard their
opinions on the new REVEALED outfit:

KRG : This outfit is absolutely great!
ROB : No doubt about it, I simply love it!
KRG : Well, it's not the greatest ever done, though!
ROB : No, but close!
KRG : I would say it's above average!
ROB : Yes, but it does appear to lack certain things. Like a
text-display, maybe!?!
KRG : Come to think of it, I don't really like it!
ROB : No, it kind of looks a bit ugly!
KRG : Yeah, it makes me sick!
ROB : Sure does, yurk. I think I am going to throw up!

Through this recorded conversation, we could establish that
REVEALED may not be as close to be released as many would
have hoped. But apparently the voters are happy about the
long delay, as REVEALED is getting more votes now than when
they were releasing!
* The most happy and peaceful person in the scene, BIZKID,
has had his first outbirst of anger in his still young life. It
all began a summer morning, when BIZKID was outside the door
to get the morning paper, when the paper-boy tossed the
paper in a small lake just outside the house. BIZKID was not
at all angry, "Ah, it could happen to anyone", he said.
Turning around to enter the house, he realised he had
slammed the door shit, and had left the keys inside. "Ah,
it could happen to anyone", BIZKID said, and walked down-
town to a lock-smith. Returning to the house, the lock-smith
accidently broke a huge hole in the door by hammering a
screw-driver into the center of the door. "Ah, it could happen
to anyone", BIZKID smiled. One thing was positive, it was
still a beautiful day, and the birds were singing - but all of
a sudden, BIZKID noticed how a bird had craped on his hair.
"Ah, it could happen to anyone", he said walking into his
house to wash his hair. The phone rang, it was a critic who
was not at all happy with the way BIZKID was editing SKYHIGH
- but then BIZKID cracked, shouting "What is it to you,
stupid low-life, worthless human being, lamer" hanging up the
phone in discontent. BIZKID was nolonger the happy and
friendly guy, he was - BIZMAN! BIZMAD plans to release a
new action movie, entitled THE LAST BIZKID, featuring naked
woman and dead people, by the end of the month.
THE END
THE OFFICIAL OPINION POLLS FOR SEPTEMBER
---------------------------------------
POLL # 1
-------
When would you prefer to see magazines released?

1. I would like for them to be released on a monthly basis.
2. They can release whenever the want, I do not care.
3. I would like to see them released faster than a month.
4. Two months in between every edition is the best.
5. It depends on the magazine, I cannot tell.
6. I do not read magazines, therefore do not care.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
POLL # 2
-------
What is your opinion of the demo-scene's interaction with the
magazines, in terms of making them aware of the happenings
within?

1. The demo-scene has always been good at letting the mags
know what is going on.
2. The demo-scene is terrible at working with the media.
3. The magazines are to blame for not printing enough news
and reports from the demo-scene.
4. This is a tricky question, I do not know.
POLL # 3
-------
How would you describe a first-release of a game?

1. A game is a first-release when it is released first in the
mail-scene.
2. A game is a first-release when it is released first on the
major boards in the states.
3. A game is a first-release when it is made official, whether
it be in the mail-scene or on the boards.
4. I do not have an opinion on this subject.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
POLL # 4
-------
What is your opinion of the competition that goes on
between the available magazines in the scene today?

1. I think sometimes it can get pretty tough.
2. What competition?
3. The magazines are good at coming up with new things all
the time to make them fore competetive.
4. They should not compete this much, we do not need it to
make the scene better.
5. I don't know and don't care.
-----
BIASED TERM FOR FIRST-RELEASES
-------------------------------
MET of MAYHEM recently released a note to the public,
criticizing the current definition of the term first-release.
According to MET, a lot of people, including himself, are very
unhappy with the fact, that a game is not considered a first-
release before it is released on the American boards. This is
a good point from MET, but this discussion have earlier been
had on both the boards as well as in the mail-scene.

The reason why the games need to be released on the US
boards to obtain status as a first-release, is that it is the
most official place for games these days. Releasing a game by
mail can cause difficulties in terms of appointing the true
first-release, like in the old days where people cheated with
the release-date, later to claim the first-release, although
no one had seen the game on its true release-date. The only
way to avoid these type of misunderstandings, is to declare
the American boards as the official home of the first-
releases, this way all magazines are able to make the most
fair and complete chart.

This however may not be fair to those who are unable to call
the US boards, or unwilling due to the morale issue involved.
But it is the best and most accurate way, therefore all
cracking-groups ought to get a hold of atleast one phreaker
to make sure their wares are noticed. Another way would be
to send your releases (those who are alleged first-releases)
to the following address :

MONTHLY RELEASES
XXXXXXX XXXX
XXXXXXX XXXXXXX.XX
XXXXX XXXXXX
XXXXXXX

This would be a safe way for you to be sure that your game
would be awarded the points and status it deserves. We are
aware that this may only work for THE PULSE MAGAZINE,
but at the present time most of the scene go by our chart,
as the official release-chart of today.

We would like for everyone who has a strong opinion in this
subject, to send us an opinion letter - making the scene,
the board and mail-sceners aware of how you think things
should be done, making the most fair result for everyone to
enjoy. Thanks in advance!

-----
THE ALPHA FLIGHT vs. DYTEC QUARREL
----------------------------------
Though the quarrel already seemed to be over and gone, it will
continue once more, with some interesting text written by the
most involved person in this scandal - namely SKINHEAD of
ALPHA FLIGHT, who finally found the time to respond to some
of the accusations against him and his group. Here follows the
exclusive response written by SKINHEAD for THE PULSE!

Dear DYTEC members..
----------------
It's been some time ago when i received a letter written by a
group called 'DYTEC' that never really was a known or even a
respectable group to me. However, I had a look at this
mentioned note and nearly dropped the bottle of beer I just
opened when I read the accusations against myself.

Back to the facts. You guys claim I should have re-cracked
your version of LEMMINGS because it looks like the ones you
have done. Well I feel really sorry, but in that case you guys
RE-cracked MY mail version of LEMMINGS insted. Fact is I
never got a hold of the DTC version, so why should I bother
to wait weeks for another version of a group when infact AFL
had the first release of that title and furthermore I already
-----
have done a good version! Everybody knows that I am a decent
cracker, so why should I have cared about a version, that is
far below my version, quality-wise!

Another funny thing is the level de-packer you fellows are
mentioning all the time. It originally got written by me using
fast I/O and is as a matter of fact probably the best and
shortest around. It contains my initials and drive routines so
you would have to scratch them and remove $cd4f otherwise
it wouldn't initalize the interupt.

The way I used to locate the levels onto the disk is the way
it originally has been on the disk, and I am talking about the
level order since the main files got removed and exchanged.
However, incase you have chosen the same order that would
not be a big deal 'coz that simply is the easiest way to remain
the original drive reader. The routine DYTEC mentioned that
checks the two last files of a side to give you a detailed info
of the level order and if necessary to change the disk side.
I put all my routines at $d800 since that is the only un-used
location to deal with until you initialize the loader and past
the game trainer before you can transfer those routines to
$5000. The Trainer codes that check whether you choose
a cheat or not get stored at $0300 and will be afterwards
-----
exchanged with the mentioned drive checker to $d000.

The trainer menue contains the usual routines so it saves a
#$01 for 'yes'or a #$00 for 'no' at $0300 depending on what
you have chosen. The same with the so special routine you
guyz brag about that checks if a lemming get trained or not
but infact never has been coded by DYTEC since that is my
very own routine that i already used on games like e.g. 'THE
SIMPSONS' or 'STREETFIGHTER 2' and a lot of other titles!

Now that I listed everything that you guyz in Dytec complained
about, I force you to come back to the indeed very interesting
question, WHO the RE-cracker might be in this case?
I agree it was a smart thought you did to involve AFL into a
cracking scandal to get more known in the first place, but
stupid like you guys are you forgot to change my codes in
the Level depacker that you ripped from my version, since
it is quite obvious you had no clue how to get the loader to
work without using my initals. Therefore you changed the
depack effect to make it look like it would be a different
loader. Well, just for the few around that still don't believe
I can give you the source code of the dep.routine so you get
a chance to check it out by yourself!

I still ask myself how low people can go just to get famous.
I advise you, next time you go and take other's version's,
to check out with whom you mess around, otherwise there will
soon be some people that will slap you around, and believe me
you won't want that to happen..

(c) SUPREME/AFL 1994
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
And yet another scandal hit the scene, boardwise. Mainly
involved is JAZZCAT of LEGEND who recently was caught in
the act of re-cracking one of the latest releases from AFL.
The story seems to be quite weird in the first place, but we
will get you behind it.

It all started with a game entitled 'MYSTERY' which was coded
by DIABLO/PADUA and arranged by RRR/OXYRON including
the art work. Both were just searching for a good software
company that would probably buy the game. Meanwhile JAZZ-
CAT offered RRR to try selling the game to a company. For
that purpose we gave him the game including some codes from
me along with the initials on different locations, just for
the safety. However, after some time JAZZCAT told RRR that
he made a contract with VISUALIZE and the money would reach
him within a few days.
-----
Time passed and while RRR was waiting for the promised
money, JAZZCAT decided to give the game to STEALTH of
TSM in order to get a fixed version. So just a few days later
the LEGEND version hit the boards but NOT the money. Now we
take a look at their version and notice that it included an
intro saying it has a copyright by VISUALIZE containing an
interupt loader to the main game. Infact the original game was
just a single file and it would be a pain in the ass if a
company would make two parts of it when the whole game only
consist of less then 100 blocks. However, we got suspicious
and got in contact with VISUALIZE the same day, and guess
what they told us? They never heard about that game and
furthermore they never talked or even promised someone to
buy it. The next mistake was done by TSM when they didn't
notice the IRQ loader would not work on NTSC that way. So the
NTSC users couldn't even reach the main part of the game
without correcting the drive reader.
Now let's make a little summary including all facts...

The LEGEND Version still include ALPHA FLIGHT's codes and
initials. The version has two files containing a fake company
intro that was probably just linked infront the game by JAZZ-
CAT to make the game look like a good budget release. And
last but not least, it doesn't work Ntsc-wise !!

All these circumstances convinced us to release a 100%
version of that game and not because we wanted to gain
the points for it, but on purpose to show the world how low
some people can go just to get stupid points. It's really
disappointing that RRR probably wlll never get the money
for the game, though we already made a new contract with
C/P VERLAG. So my message for the people outside that still
support this machine with games - watch out for backstabbers
like JAZZCAT, simply make your own deal and contracts with
the software company's whether he promise you a big amount
of money or not, mostly their only aim is to get another
first release and the money you were looking for is gone
forever.

==Board Report==
<pre>
BOARD-REPORT by CROSSFIRE
----------------------------
Yes, indeed! Another month has passed away, and we return
to bring you another dose of your favorite board-report,
hosted by CROSSFIRE of MOTIV 8.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
BUT....... Before we start, we would like to place a correction
to a minor mistake done last month. In the list of the top-euro
boards we listed the European HQ of ALPHA FLIGHT, namely
"ESCAPADE".. Now, we have been contacted by the sysop,
XENOX/AFL who informed us of a small mishap - The number we
printed was in-complete! As it turns out, the two last digits
was lost while the article was written. The real number goes as
following : +49/5341-395697.. Anyone should feel free to
e-mail the author of this chapter, SHOULD you find other mis-
haps and they WILL be corrected - fair and square..
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
THIS month we will introduce you to a new board located in
Germany. It is a H/P-board and has already become extremely
popular. Read the board-report and you will learn..
This month we also put a spotlight on THE DUNGEON, that re-
cently dropped G*P and took on SCS*TRC.. Furthermore, we
have a report from TUNNEL OF WARES, that recently changed
not only NUMBER, but also SYSOP..
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
Lately, GENESIS*PROJECT lost their hq THE DUNGEON, due
to them not being able to call the US. Rumours has it, that a
new G*P-board is coming up, but until then you will have to
wait with patience. THE DUNGEON became hq for SCS*TRC in-
stead, and curious as a real reporter HAS to be (BOOH! .ed),
THE PULSE caught up with the sysop THE ALCHEMIST who
also recently joined up with the co-op, while both himself and
his board still also remains DEMONIX-hq sideways..
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome THE ALCHEMIST/DMX
and SCS*TRC, the sysop of THE DUNGEON, whom we will now
force to have a seat in our cousey red chair.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
Ok, about my board and the switch from G*P to SCS*TRC :
As you can see, G*P is very -VERY- inactive these days, and
this was my main-reason to take on SCS*TRC. After TONY
(MOTLEY/G*P) got in trouble and could not supply codes or
cards to the group, I have not received a call for 2 months
from ANY of the members. PROPAGANDA has not been released
since -..damn, i cannot remember.. I think it was the month of
March 1994...
- --- -
ANYHOW, I did not want to drop G*P as I tried to talk ENNO
(BURGLAR/SCS) and NIELS (CBA/TRC) into letting me keep
them on and share the board.. -Next Page!
..like they did with DIVINE ULTIMATUM over a year ago, but
SCS*TRC did not want to, so I just kept PROPAGANDA.
- --- -
NEWSCOPY, JUCKE and MOTLEY are really good friends,
which was the hardest reason to let them go. I hope that they
respect my decision and know that I am doing the right thing
since my board was dropping from #3 and down to #5, even
under REBELLION, which made me laugh and mad at the same
time. I think of course this is strictly my own opinion and
everyone has his rights, that my board is ranked either #2
or #3..
- --- -
I know that PUDWERX' board (THE FORUM) should be #1, and
MORRISSEY's board (DOWN BY LAW) should be #2, then mine
#33. Like I said, this is my opinion, I am sure some will dis-
agree, then again some might say it is better than #3 or
where-ever my board is ranked..
+ THE PULSE MAGAZINE +
---------------------
The Ultimative
THE START-UP OF "THE DUNGEON"
-------------------------------
First off, I started in the scene in 1989. ICE COLDKILL lived
near me and introduced me to MARCELLOUS (CHAMELEON) and
he started me out with this board. He gave me the chance to
get in the door. He send me C*Base because at the time I was
running a local board on Ivory V5,0. I started out with 2 1541
drives, 2 1571's, 2 1581's, a C128, an 1902 and a 1200 modem.
- --- -
I quickly bought my Supra 2400 baud-modem and a few weeks
later my handle started out when I was on the local scene as
SPOT SPORT, since I play a lot of volleyball and wear SPOT
SPORT clothing, but ICE COLDKILL said it was lame. Since I
played AD&D a lot, I picked THE ALCHEMIST.
- --- -
I cannot remember everything, but I started out with FAIR-
LIGHT as their hq and then FOE joined in as well as RMJCC.
Then I took on PADUA. Next it was RAGE, then DEMONIX and
GENESIS*PROJECT (incl.PROPAGANDA!) and finally SCS*TRC.
I am sure that I left a group out as well. Of course there was
the time I was supposed to run as ALPHA FLIGHT and RED
SECTOR INC.-hq as well, but they could not ever make a final
decision, but that's ok.
- --- -
-Next Page!-
in 1993 I traded my C128/64 and 1902 plus an 1581 and a couple
of 1541's for the 4 megs ramlink, Super Snapshot V5 and the
Swiftlink Cartridge. Then in late 1993 I bought the CMD case
and controller from a guy in California for 100 US-Dollars,
then went to a local computer-store and bought a 85 meg SCSI
2 drive to install for 92 US-Dollars. So I have an 85 megs SCSI
for 192 US-Callers. Hehe..
Lately, a new board was opened in Germany, and had it been
just ANOTHER one, we probably wouldn't bother telling you
about it, but this board is infact -VERY- different from the
rest.. This is a board, that DOES have a warsub, but it hasn't
been in use yet, since all users there are friends just calling
for the one and only purpose of having a blast.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
The board has no name, and is known to the public only as
"THE PHREAKAZ HQ". As quick minds would probably have fi-
gured out by now, the board is the official HQ for the very
first European based H/P-group ever - THA PHREAKAZ!!!
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
The sysop is PEACEMAKER/THA PHREAKAZ/M8/BYRONIC.
We caught up with him and asked him to give us some details
about his board. After a long time of bitching he gave us his
technical data, and they go like this........
- --- -
System is running on: 1 Commodore 64 /PAL
2 1541 drives
1 1581 drive
1 1802 monitor
1 Discovery 2400 C Modem
1 AT&T Telephone
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
The software used is Cyborg Modded C*Base V3.1. One 1581-
drive runs as System-disk and UD-area, while a 1541 runs as
backup UD and the last 1541 takes on e-mail and posts.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
The board contains of:
-----------------
6 Sub-Boards: 1. Crap-Talk - General info
2. Codez'n'Shit - Special H/P-sub
3. Some Warez - Posted uploads
4. Partyland - Goes without saying
5. Threat me! - The Warsub
6. Love'n'Sex - CAN be interesting!
- --- -
2 Wares-Drives: 1. Warez
2. H/P Files
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
The board is mainly for fun and H/P-stuff for specially selec-
ted users. It does not have much disc-space, but since plenty
of other German boards has gotten that, it was not taken as a
serious point! Simply call and have a ball!
Last month TUNNEL OF WARES as we knew it was taken off-
line. After F4CG had been boardless for some time, they got
the idea to sign on ZIRCO/CHROMANCE, and let him run the
board from there. ZIRCO knew the old sysop STORMRIDER very
well, both living in BROOKLYN/NY and all. ZIRCO agreed and
he succeeded the task very graciously. We asked him for a low
down and we got it. The board is one of the three old survi-
ving boards in the scene, and should there make good reading.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
THE PULSE MAGAZINE threw ZIRCO down in our infamous red
chair and forced us to give him the story of the board. As it
turned out we didn't have to threathen him at all..
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
TUNNEL OF WARES was originally run by a guy named PATH-
FINDER on a 128/64 and a 20 meg CMD HD back around 1988.
At any rate, TUNNEL OF WARES grew to be one of the most
populare N.Y.-Elite boards, and was reaching pinnacle status
among all sceners at the time, thanks to a cool BBS-program,
a nice sysop and a decent group.
- --- -
Due to circumstances not revealed by me, the board was sold
to a guy named SLAYER, who later changed his handle into
STORMRIDER, and ran the board from PATHFINDER's 128, and
added some other enhancements such as CMD's Jiffy-Dos,..
..and upgraded to a Cyborg Modded C*Base with some kick-ass
mods, and took 20CC in as a second HQ-group, NEXT to F4CG.
- --- -
STORMRIDER ran the board for 3-4 years, and just recently
at or around June of this year, he decided to persue the IBM-
scene, and TOW was unexpectedly taken down. This left F4CG
boardless for a brief while.
- --- -
SOLAR, organizer of F4CG + a good friend, asked me to take
the throne as sysop of TOW, since I knew STORMRIDER pretty
well, had a decent size HD, and a dedicated line. TUNNEL OF
WARES went back online August 1st, and is running with the
following equipment:
- --- -
-Commodore 64 running UCBBS 1.3
-1541 Drive
-40 Megs CMD HardDrive
-Aprotek 2400 bps modem
-Epyx Fastloader Cart
-1802 Monitor
..and some disfunctional Jiffy-Dos chips..
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
THE PULSE MAGAZINE
..First with the last!
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
I chose to run UCBBS over C*BASE for a few reasons:
- --- -
1. It's short, quick, and straight forward. Nothing fancy
about it. It does the job that the group requires.
- --- -
2. With the tremendous amount of C*Base-boards currently
being run, I thought a change of pace was in order.
- --- -
3. CRASHING! - I know the sleepless nights that TOMMY
(STORMRIDER) had when he had to attempt to re-boot
C*BASE successfully without another crash. I honestly
didn't want to experience THAT!
- --- -
Then again, WHO KNOWS? I might consider running C*BASE as
it seems that some users can't get enough of it..
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
+ THE SEPTEMBER PROFILE - THE INTERVIEW +
---------------------------------------
Welcome once again curious readers to the forum of the
famous and successful sons and daughters of the scene.
This month we have invited a very exciting scener, one I
definitely guarantee will cause great interest among all of
you readers.

This months profile started his career in the scene at a
time where todays major groups were not even considered,
but at a time where everything was new and growing.
Our guest made a name of himself through many years of
service in the cracking-scene, but he was later to leave
the scene. Ironically enough he returned to become one of
the few people who fight for the existance of the scene in
a remarkable way. He took over one of the largest operations
in the scene, taking it into a direction that gave it new ways
of amazing the people and its many fans and followers.

You may know our guest best as the new and inspiring editor
of the diskmagazine PROPAGANDA. He is a very liked person
in the scene, undoubtedly because of his positive nature and
his work to promote the 64-scene. It is with great pleasure I
present this months profile, in his last interview for any

[D] Welcome JOCHEN. Please give the readers a description
of your person, in and off the scene.

[S] Hello ALEX. Well, like you have already mentioned, my name
is JOCHEN, probably well known under the SKINHEAD and
SUPREME handles. I still go to school to gain the highest
possible examination here in Germany, though it already
bothered me a lot with my 20 years. In my barely sufficient
spare time, I play soccer and hang out with friends. The other
time I am either busy with my beautiful girl or doing stuff
like cracking games, watching STEVEN KING movies or giving
interviews to certain magazines. I am recently a member of
ALPHA FLIGHT since their return to the scene, June last
year. My main job consists of cracking and releasing games.
Furthermor, I still provide the boards with my presence, that
still matters a lot to me and once in a while I also fix some
wares if necessary. But all in all I am still that lazy guy I
used to be over the years.

[D] You are probably best known as the straight-forward
cracker. Please give our readers a resume of your career in
the C64 scene up to now.

[S] My career started a little confusing. Me and SKID ROW/
AFL went through a lot of cracking groups in the past. I have
been a member of ANARCHY, ELITE, DYNAMIX, HYSTERIC,
DEADLINE, TALENT, GENESIS, CALADAN and ALPHA FLIGHT
just to mention a few. There were probably some more I might
have forgotten, but those are the important ones that formed
and shaped me to what I am today. However, the first long
break I took on my interesting scene journey, was in 1990 when
all of a sudden I was visited by the German cops. As usual
they stole all my stuff and addresses, but due to a very good
lawyer I managed to come out with slight bruises. I am still
sorry for the people they probably busted afterwards, haha.
When I returned to the scene in 1991 it was some kind of a big
surprise. Meanwhile the scene had changed a lot, good and
known groups had made major changes and a couple of new
faces had appeared. However, it was time to create something
new, something that would really surprise everyone, I am
talking about THE INSIDERS, which was formed by SKID ROW,
AUTOPSY (now HOODLUM on the Amiga), TRISTAN/ex.ELITE,
MR.PRESIDENT/ex.TRSI, LAZINESS, HELLFIRE, MAD MOUSE
and me. First we thought about re-builting ELITE together
with good old CONAN, but all of a sudden that project was
cancelled when NORMAL changed his mind again and felt sick
of the C64-scene. Without him we did not like to re-build
ELITE, though we had the permission to do it. Anyway, we
brought up the group and started to call the boards using
the first blue box ever done on the 64 by HELLFIRE. I still
remember when a few people got afraid they could probably get
beaten and started to involve us in wars, they immidiately got
spread through the world of the modem-scene. Most of them
were simply jealous that we found out how to code and use a
blue-box when infact the others still had to use lame calling-
cards. Great time though when you were still able to call
global through AT&T with a simple 2400/2600 and 2400/2400
HQ tone, but the group only lasted for a quite short period
since AUTOPSY went back to the Amiga and TRISTAN, MAD
MOUSE and LAZINESS turned out to be more inactive. We
either had the choice to let THE INSIDERS rest in peace or
go on with another good group. That was when we got attentive
to HYSTERIC, a steady growing group. So THE INSIDERS+
HYSTERIC co-operation was born, with a lot of good releases
and success we raised in the charts. Later, the few still
active members of the INSIDERS went over to HYSTERIC,
that's when the INSIDERS died for good. In between the
HYSTERIC times, I teamed up with some groups like TALENT
and DEADLINE just to discover some new groups and people,
though some groups really consist to the top of the scene, I
never really cared much about them, and always came back to
HYSTERIC where I got my friends in for a long time, I will
never regret those times when we had good and bad ones. But
there exist sunny and rainy days ever since. However, one
day the time had come when I realised HYSTERIC was about to
die soon. That happened when PSYCHOBILLY decided to
rebuilt RED SECTOR together with BENSON, TERMO, MRP
and IRATA. I did not like that idea, and instead formed a new
group with the rest of HYSTERIC, that went over to my side
and some more familiar faces better known as NEWSCOPY,
JUCKE, SODAPOP, TRONIC, ADOLF and DR.COOL. Well, we
had some success with releasing some titles and traded with
EMPIRE for a while. But even though the group had the
appearance and all possibilities to reach the top of the
charts I never had this special satisfaction, that should be
a big presuppose for every leader who wants to lead his group
to the top. Furthermore, I constantly received some mail
from SORCERESS and ANTICHRIST asking me to join G*P as
a cracker. I announced the sudden death of CALADAN and
joined G*P. Simply because I did not feel like losing my group
mates, I took them with me, SKID ROW, JUCKE, SODAPOP,
TRONIC, SECRET MAN and HONESTY. It all turned out to be
quite cool with the best board behind us, called MYSTIC
CAVERN. We had a great time though I had a lot of times
quarrels with either TIGER or STING because everyone
claimed to be the better cracker, haha. Funny though, since
they have not done anything and LA STYLE and me used to be
the only active members. SNACKY quit, SES coded his last
intro, while THE GOBLIN announced his comeback, but never
did. Later TYGER felt asleep as well while DEBBIE and OLIVER
got more and more problems with their relationship. Once
more the time had come to do something new instead, so I
opened a board called GODLAND for a change. At the
beginning I had some serious problems with my systems, but
after a while that got fixed as well, and the board picked
up soon with steady callers from all over the globe, even
though I ran it independant. A few weeks later, I also left
GENESIS PROJECT and got really sick of the scene, that
got more lame each day. I decided to stop all the projects I
had, and thought why bother wasting time on plans and people
that you have to kick in the ass day by day. However, I
stopped in the scene for over a half year, but nevertheless
I still had this strange feeling in my fingers that probably
everyone can imagine. Once a scener, always a scener.
Anyway, I returned to the boards and slapped some people
around and had fun with the rookies, that was the first time
I got in touch with ALPHA FLIGHT, that really looked
promising to me. SKID ROW andd HONESTY followed and
there we still are and probably will be until there is nothing
left that can keep us in the scene. Suddenly you do not feel
to change groups anymore, like I have done in the past. I will
stick with my friends in ALPHA FLIGHT, and care about their
success.

[D] You recently returned to the scene, making somewhat of a
comeback in the cracking and modem-scene. What was the
reason for this comeback, and why did you leave the scene
earlier this year in the first place?

[S] Well, I did not really leave the scene, I always tend to
turn myself back into somewhat of a private person once in
a while. I am not a computer animal, though I already spent a
couple of nights with cracking or trading wares. Furthermore
ALPHA FLIGHT recently took a summer break since nobody
of us really feels like sitting inside a room looking at a
stupid monitor when infact outside the sun burns and the
girls are wet. That is a good time for cold beers and relaxing
stuff. But do not worry, we are back now with the usual
amount of wares, and a constant support board-wise.

[D] You are known as a notorious cracker, who never really
made it in the charts. Have you plans to reach a certain
status in the scene, that would allow you to enter the top of
the charts?

[S] A good question indeed. Actually I think I never had the
time to care that much about sprading my cracks through the
mail scene when infact it is there the main voters are. Now
that we also added a couple of good mail-traders some time
ago, I am climbling the charts constantly now. Another
interesting view is that certain people simply do not like to
vote for a cracker who's handle is SKINHEAD, eventhough I
already explained so many times, that I am not a skinhead and
neither am I right winged. It is just the name itself that
impress me, no matter what it reflect. By the way, there also
exists SHARP-skins, that stands for 'SkinHeads Against
Right Policy'. However, I decided to change my handle into
SUPREME some time ago just to avoid further confusions
eventhough I usually do not really care what othe people
think or write about me. Suddenly I appear in the charts,
because most of the people like my cracking style and
appreciate if a game is decent cracked (IFFL+Multi trained)
with a good looking intro infront. I call myself a scroll-text
animal, because I use to write good and interesting texts
unlike other people who just write the title of the game, the
crackers name and the greetings, and that is it. I know, I
deviate a little from the main question, but let me pick up
another topic, namely the GAMERS GUIDE. Before I want to
mention that I neither have something personally against the
editors or want to offend them in any way, but the way they
do that magazine is horrible in the first place. They
realised simply too late that they forced people to use lame
and short intros just to make their cracks as short as
possible, even find trainers when there are none anymore.
Honestly, who really gives a fuck if a crack has 20 blocks
more but therefore contain a well looking intro. Well, I could
go into deeper details, but I will be nice and close that
topic here. Back to the purpose of this interview I presume
everybody wants to reach a sepcial standart in the scene
so that is why we do all this stuff like releasing wares or
wonderful demos, graphics, etc. It is just a matter of time
when the people realise for whom they have to vote for, the
active people, and those that provide the scene with
something useful. I do not want to name any names, but I
still cannot understand why still certain groups and
crackers get votes when their last crack was years ago.
They might have been good once, but simply compare it with
e.g. the music charts. There are a lot of great hits, they
were number one, but one day felt down simply because there
were new ones that deserved to be in the top as well. Anyway,
I recently use my old handle for all the cracks I do and I know
people will appreciate the quality of the wares instead of
looking at a handle. If I watch a wonderful demo from a group
with a stupid name, I look at the quality in the first place,
and vote for them because they have done something amazing.
Well, I do not really care if I am number one in the single
cracker charts, as long as my cracks will get appreciated
was what they are.

[D] I could not agree with youmore. It is so stupid of people
to prejudge others by either their looks or their handle, it
is sad to see that such naive people are still part of this
scene. Be open-minded, have a liberal attitude towards your
fellow-sceners, if not in the real world, atleast in the scene.
You have a glorious career in many known and respected
cracking-groups. Which group did you prefer being in the
most/least, and why?

[S] Uhm, that's a hard one. I do not think I would regret
anything I have done in the past, and neither what groups I
have been in. In every group I had my great times and once
they pass, like good and bad years. Each group formed and
saved me important experiences I used for my career. But
though I think the best of times I had was the time it all
started, when the scene was still alive and kicking ass. I
guess it is obvious that I also remember having a good time
with INSIDERS and HYSTERIC, GENESIS PROJECT and of
course ALPHA FLIGHT since I was/am a member of all three
groups for a very long period.

[D] Now you are best known as MR.ALPHA FLIGHT. How is
ALPHA FLIGHT organised these days, and what is the
current member-status of the group?

[S] Well, ALPHA FLIGHT has a very great intern relation-
ship. At this place I have to send some big thinks to MARC
who did a great organisation through the time, I think we
work like every top cracking group should work. We have
strict rules and jobs everybody has to follow otherwise you
would not make it to the top. Each member has the task to
give all his power into it and get the things rolling ahead.
I remember people, they used to have a good name but did
nothing beside hanging around with those people we do not
get along and they will get kicked out immidiately. The same
happens to someone who will mess up twice for the group, just
to avoid getting a bad reputation, that probably sounds hard,
but though we are fair and our aim is to get the group going,
you can compare it with the business of a serious company
where all the people have to work correctly and fast,
otherwise they will get booted out. However, the management
and the organisations will be done and discussed from the
old staff, MARC, MAX and myself that is. ALPHA FLIGHT
consists out of old familiar faces, like MARC, MAX, SKID ROW,
ARNE, HONESTY, POL POT and new very talented ones such
as MURPHY, PHU-Q, STYX and CENTAURION. Also LEMMING,
XENON and other people are very important spread-wise. All
in all, we have got a great team where some new faces might
appear soon and therefore others have to go.

[D] It is known to many, that ALPHA FLIGHT is a very
ambitions group when it comes to the charts. Why do you
think AFL still have not reached the top of the charts when
it comes to the voted charts?

[S] Well, actually ALPHA FLIGHT belongs to the top 3
cracking groups in the world, and that is what the voting
charts reflects. You are right we probably have not reached
the number one spot yet, but simply compare ALPHA FLIGHT
to SUCCESS+TRC, they should be still number one in most of
the charts. Well, they do a good job spreading their wares
for a couple of years now. Originally ALPHA FLIGHT was only
supposed to be a releasing group, existing board-wise such
as TALENT. But I liked the idea to make such trouble in the
mail-scene as well. That is when we started to provide the
scene with major versions of good originals. Nowadays we
mostly crack everything we get our hands on, and that is
worth to be spread. We added a lot of good mail-traders to
ge the stuff around the world, and get honoured for the work
we spent on the wares. Now the people appreciate ALPHA
FLIGHT wares due to the good quality and give their votes
to us. So we might see a few changes very soon, beside other
groups who do good cracks as well. And there is another
appeal to the people who constantly vote. If you simply do
not know who to vote for, do not vote at all. Make up your
mind who you give the points, do not be lame and look at
other charts just to see who is high and who is not.
Appreciate quality and activity instead of a good name.
Look at the small groups and vote them instead of groups
who have not cracked one single game for ages or demo-
groups who did not release anything for a long time.

[D] You are also a heavy swapper, atleast you used to be.
What is your opinion of the swapping-scene, compared to the
modem-scene?

[S] I really never used to be a big swapper. Even not in my
former times. The highest amount of contacts I ever had were
around 40-50 people, I just re-started to send out some
stuff to my best contacts and friends scene-wise. I just
wanted to get a little behind the still so big mail-scene. Most
of the guys who call the boards tend to call it the lamer
scene. But I always appreciated the swappers work though I
can still not imagine how someone can copy and send out over
200 sendings a week. Well, the big difference between the
mail-scene and the modem-scene are the people behind it. The
mail-sceners are still interested with who they trade, and
what they trade. The time does not really matter, and the lack
of quality is low apart the modem-scene allows a steady
contact with the people who frequently call out.
However, each scene has it's disadv. and advantages. I am not
really into big letters and that crap, I am a cracker so the
wares are the main thing that matters in the first place,
though I also like disk-magazines a lot, but they must be
properly written and include good and fast news and articles.

[D] You were planning on re-releasing the old and legendary
magazine, RELAX. But now that you have announced those
plans to be dead, maybe you could tell us the reason for this?

[S] Yes. Everybody who expected that magazine in time can
write a letter to our great, but lazy coders to complain. I am
not the one who is responsible for the huge delay, even if I
announced the magazines some time earlier this year. I already
had a couple of articles done, and was only waiting for the
code itself, but somehow it never reached me. I really got fed
up with the idea to kick the coders twice a day to force them
to finish the code in time. Anyway, if I might ever get the
code, I would continue the magazine, since a lot of people
were asking for it. Just wait and see. Probably thecoders took
the name of the magazine too serious and anytime they hear
the name RELAX, they start relaxing until they forget what
they were about to do.

-----
[D] You just joined up with the notorious staff at THE PULSE
MAGAZINE. What are your future plans for THE PULSE, and
what do you hope to be able to serve the readers with in
your future reports?

[S] That is right. I plan to provide THE PULSE with various
articles about other people and their groups. I will be there
when something special happens. I also plan to make a summary
of the scene for each month including somewhat of a satiric
touch. I am not concerned to a certain chapter, I am able to
do everything from a report to the charts. If you want, you
can go on holiday for a while DUKE, haha.

[D] Heh, that would be nice - but I would miss it in the end.
What would your ideal magazine be like, and how would you
rate today's media in the scene compared to the older days?

[S] To be honest THE PULSE is already somewhat of the
"ideal" magazine. I like the professional style, and the
objective views of the editors. It deserves to be called the
best magazine of today, but I also appreciate other magazines
and their work. It would be quite disappointing if there would
not be any competition at all. The quality of most magazine
are raising up. However, the outfit looks similar because the
trend goes to the 80 sign character set. Some years ago,
there were only a few respectable magazines around, such
as MAMBA, PROPAGANDA, SHOCK and CORRUPTION. The
rest either include really old text and news or lame articles
and uninteresting intern crap, nobody wanted to read anyway.
A lot of groups just followed the trend of doing a magazine,
but did not realise that a proper written magazine also
consists of a good spelled English and articles with sence
and not just based on purpose to make some group propa-
ganda. Nowadays it is probably easier to make a good maga-
zine since the scene got smaller and the news and rumours
go through earlier than in the past. Therefore I still would
like to see more good magazines around, though you got some
good competition lately with DOMINATION and VANDALISM
NEWS.

[D] Among many others, we have helped the quality level to
go up in general since we entered the scene - and that is a
fact. The GENESIS PROJECY party is soon to be held in
Sweden, and we expect it to get a whole lot of visitors. What
is your opinion on the arrangements of this party, and are
you planning on going?

[S] It is a great idea, and I appreciate it a lot when people
go and plan to make a party that does not matter if a computer
"only" meeting or somewhat of a big booze and fun party,
though probably I would prefer the last one, haha. Too bad I
did not get a hold of any informations yet. When and where the
party will be held, but I presume it will be in Gothenburg,
Sweden, when it is supposed to be a G*P party. I cannot say
anything if I or anyone else of my group mates will be able to
come. I would like to. Furthermore ALPHA FLIGHT also plan to
make a pure C64 party soon, we just have to make up some
opinion polls before, to know how many people would be
interested in coming.

[D] You are a frequent caller to the states. How would you
describe the current situation at the American boards to be?

[S] Wll, it always depends on the callers. If you take the
lack of callers into consideration, the boards still run good,
but you cannot really compare it to the older days where most
of all major boards got 30-40 callers each day. Nowadays you
had a good day when you received 15 calls, an important factor
is the way to call out. A lot of people do not get frequent
cards, and blue boxing is blocked in most countries, though
there are still some ways to fool the law. I would say the
current situation is "dry", but I hope it will be better now
that we passed the summer and we are straight going to the
autumn period. Another lame behaviour from certain people
is when they try to use someones backdoor or constantly
try to fuck up a board. This recently happened to certain
major boards and is in my opinion on of the lowest things
someone could do. I am glad HIC is backdoor free, some
people should think twice how many good boards are left and
how much time and money a sysop spent in running a good
board.

[D] I will second that. What are your future plans in the
scene, do you plan on staying till the bitter end?

[S] Well, my plans are as mentioned to kick ass with ALPHA
FLIGHT and to provide the scene with something useful. Right
now I cannot say how long I will stay and if there probably
will be a day when I try to call a board and realise there is
none, and the same with the wares and the scene. However,
I am not a guy who quits and come back just to quit again -
and come back. If I get tired of the scene and feel there is
nothing left that could keep me in, I simply would stop
without making such a big deal out of it. Who really cares
about someone who quit the scene. But do not worry, I still
have enough fun and reasons to stay until an unknown day!

[D] We are cruising towards the end of this interview. Would
you perhaps like to send out some greetings before we close
the book on this one?
[S] Yes, I would like to send out some greetings to my best
friends like: SKID ROW, MARC, MAX, SECRET MAN, HONESTY,
POL POT, DUKE, CROSSFIRE, ALCHEMIST, PSYCHOBILLY,
ANCIENT MARINER, MRP, BENSON, MAJESTY, BOD, RADAR,
AUTOPSY, PUDWERX, RRR, STORMBRINGER, FEN1, KING,
HAIN, NEWSCOPY, JUCKE, TRONIC and to all in ALPHA FLIGHT
of course. Furthermore I would like to thank you ALEX, for
such a good inteview. I already have done a couple for some
different magazines, but this one really kept me busy with
writing. Also thanks to MARLBORO for their support, to my
girl-friend for interupting me a lot, though I do not regret
it, haha. Hope to see anyone of you guys, atleast on the
ALPHA FLIGHT autumn conference.

[D] Thanks a lot, it was a pleasure and an honour!

THE OVERALL CHARTS - SEPTEMBER EDITION
--------------------------------------
We return to take a fresh look at the overall charts, based
on 7 Magazines released in the past month. We award 10 points
for the number one, down to 1 point for the 10th place.

The votes was counted by KBS and DUKE, and as usual your
host is DUKE. Be sure to send us your magazine, so that your
votes will be counted here as well.

The following 7 Magazines deserves the credits as the ones
we used in the making of the Overall Charts. We send them our
thanks on behalf of THE PULSE MAGAZINE.
The best DEMO GROUPS, CODERS, GRAPHICIANS, MUSICIANS,
CRACKING GROUPS, CRACKERS, MAGAZINES, SWAPPERS and
the OVERALL CHART are coming up on the following pages.
There will also be a lot of important remarks about the charts
in every catagory, be sure to read them as well.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
Comments from the Editor,

The Overall Charts have now run for a lot of months now,
finally forming a system that is easily predictable. We are
able to declare this, as the charts have proven to move
in a very slow pace, always being behind the scene about
4-5 months.

Looking at the scene today, we find two sectors. The legal
scene is ruling the legal market - meaning they have all the
best coders, graphicians and musicians. While the illegal
scene is alone with its own charts. Only a few groups are
able to boast about their activity in both parts of the scene,
one of them being Fairlight - who are represented in all of
the charts in the magazines today. This is also notable in
the final overall chart, which they have ruled for the past
couple of months. But will they keep their winning streak?

SCS+TRC describes themselves as the ruling co-operation,
and no doubt I would be the last person to disagree. But are
they really this untouchable, that no one is able to shake
them off the top of the voters cracking charts? All of this
will be answered in this months Overall Charts.

BEST DEMO GROUPS - SEPTEMBER 1994 [Legal Chart]

POS. L.POS. GROUP NAME... POINTS
---------------------------------------------
1 (1) OXYRON 64
2 (2) CAMELOT 56
3 (3) CREST 55
4 (4) CENSOR DESIGN 52
5 (5) FAIRLIGHT 44
6 (6) TRIAD 37
7 (7) ANTIC 22
- (8) TABOO 22
9 (9) FOCUS 11
10 (-) TOPAZ BEERLINE 10
---------------------------------------------
+ OXYRON is still considered the best demo group in the C64
scene, which is understandable. The rest of the chart from
position 2-9 remains unchanged from last month, which tells
a very boring tale of how original the voters are these days.

* A lot of new demos are out on the streets these days, with
BEYOND FORCE, BYTERAPERS INC. among others being
potential groups to watch out for in this chart. The brand
new CAMELOT demo is out, which could award them the first
place next month. Interesting months are to come!
BEST CODERS - SEPTEMBER 1994 [Legal Chart]

POS. L.POS. SCENERS NAME... POINTS
1 (2) CROSSBOW/CREST 60
2 (1) TTS/OXYRON 58
3 (3) TRON/FAIRLIGHT 49
4 (4) SLAMMER/CAMELOT 48
5 (7) MMS/TABOO 37
6 (5) ZODIAC/FLASH INC. 34
7 (5) BOB/CENSOR DESIGN 33
8 (8) D'ARC/TOPAZ BEERLINE 14
9 (10) KING FISHER/TRIAD 11
- (-) KM/TABOO 11
---------------------------------------------
+ The tale of the two best coders in the scene continues,
but how long can they keep on switching place infront of
other equally good coders? Time will tell, obviously!

* Just like the demo-group charts, there is not a lot of
movements going on in this chart. Hopefully we will see some
more active coders in this chart over the next couple of
months instead of some of the inactive ones above. New to
the chart though, is KM from TABOO - who replaced
GLASNOST. But surely he will return again!?!
BEST GRAPHICIANS - SEPTEMBER 1994 [Legal Chart]

POS. L.POS. SCENERS NAME... POINTS
1 (1) CREEPER/ANTIC 65
- (2) ELECTRIC/EXTEND 65
3 (3) OGAMI/FAIRLIGHT 52
5 (6) CRUISE/ELYSIUM 36
6 (5) HEIN HOLT/FOCUS 35
7 (-) ROB/CAMELOT 17
8 (7) MIRAGE/FOCUS 16
9 (10) CARRION/ELYSIUM 15
10 (9) BIZKID/OXYRON 11
---------------------------------------------
+ We have two graphicians on this months number one, both
of them top graphicians - very familiar to the charts as well.
CREEPER was absolutely great in the latest ANTIC demo!

* Not a lot of changes in this chart either, only one positive
re-entry in the form of ROB of CAMELOT. He is indeed
worthy of being voted for. Out goes DANE, who we have not
seen or heard from in a long time.

* I would say it is about time we got some new names in here!
BEST MUSICIANS - SEPTEMBER 1994 [Legal Chart]

POS. L.POS. SCENERS NAME... POINTS
---------------------------------------------
1 (1) SYNDROM/TIA/CREST 59
2 (2) JEROEN TEL/PHYZICS 51
3 (4) DRAX/VIBRANTS/CREST 45
4 (3) P.R.I./TIA/OXYRON 35
5 (5) DANKO/CENSOR DESIGN 27
6 (9) JEFF/CAMELOT 24
7 (7) ZYRON/ANTIC 18
- (-) SHOGOON/AGONY 18
9 (6) RED DEVIL/FAIRLIGHT 15
10 (10) A-MAN/AVANTGARDE 13
---------------------------------------------
+ SYNDROM not surprisingly still the number one world-wide.
But what has JEROEN TEL done lately to make up for all the
votes he keep getting? Better award P.R.I. for the great
music he keeps on producing - he is worthy no doubt.

* The top remains almost unchanged, why we got a very
interesting new entry - SHOGOON/AGONY. He has been
putting out a lot of really good tunes lately, and we can
expect to hear more of him - also in the charts. But where
are the great musicians from BLUES MUZ'?
BEST CRACKING GROUP - SEPTEMBER 1994 [Illegal]

POS. L.POS. GROUP NAME.. POINTS
---------------------------------------------
1 (1) SCS+TRC 69
2 (3) AVANTGARDE 50
3 (5) ALPHA FLIGHT 47
4 (6) CHROMANCE 46
5 (4) TALENT 44
6 (2) TRSI+DYTEC 43
7 (9) TRIAD 22
8 (8) LEGEND 20
9 (7) MOTIV 8 15
10 (-) EXCESS 11
---------------------------------------------
+ SCS+TRC still the holders of the number one spot, I wonder
if they are going for a record - trying to beat LEGEND's old
record of two years on the number one spot.

* A lot of interesting movements in the chart this month. AFL
moving up into the top 3, well capable of going even further.
CHROMANCE also seem to be going in that direction together
with AVANTGARDE. TRSI+DYTEC took a major blow, moving
down the chart 4 places. MOTIV 8 also lost votes, not very
far though. In closing FAIRLIGHT made room for EXCESS!
BEST CRACKERS - SEPTEMBER 1994 [Illegal Chart]
7 (8) XXX/TALENT 21
+ BURGLAR managed to hold on to the crown for yet another
month, but with an amazing amount of points - look at the
point difference between BURGLAR and POWERPLANT!

* Not a lot of movements in the top 5, but then all of a sudden
things start to happen. BACCHUS is moving up together with
XXX, while the popular DERBYSHIRE RAM is moving down the
table. Meanwhile CHRYSAGON re-enters the chart, but what
is BENSON doing here? He left the scene months ago to start
a new family. The voters seem to live in the wrong time-zone!
DRAX decided after a while of consideration, that he was no
longer interested in working for WORLD OF DEMOS. In his
place we welcome METAL/VIBRANTS. This is the WOD staff:

General Editor : DUKE/REGINA
Programming Critic : STEVE/REGINA
Graphical Critic : NEPTUNE/CAMELOT
Musical Critic : METAL/VIBRANTS
WORLD OF DEMOS KAOS....
-------------------
The WORLD OF DEMOS staff had to undergo yet some extreme
changes, and along with that came some unfortunate problems.
DRAX decided to resign the staff at a very late stage, leaving
very little time for us to replace him. We did manage to find
one very qualified person though, METAL, who will start
working for WORLD OF DEMOS from October on. Another not
very fortunate problem that struck parts of the staff, was
illness. Therefore STEVE is the only available critic ready
for this edition of WORLD OF DEMOS - but as usual he has
some entertaining text for you to read.
LUNACY 6 - THE LOST SEQUEL by ANTIC (REVIEW)
--------------------------------------
This demo was quite a surprise. I never really thought very
very high of ANTIC - I mean, they do have capable members,
but none of them ever stood up from the crowd. All they used
to do was stuff seen ages ago, with little or no improvement
to it. But this trackmo is something completely different.
First a pair of eyes pops up! I do not know what they are doing
there, but they are there! They look around, fade down, and a
moviefader introduces us to the creators: ZYRON, CREEPER
and DEPEH. Then an animated raytracing appears. It looks ok,
as the whole rendered image rotates around its own y-axis
(a bit like a vector tv-box, with images on each side of the
box. Here however, the image is the same on all 4 sides of the
box).
After some IRQ-loading, a rotate-twister appears. Apparently
1008 dots are rotated over 2 bit planes realtime, and it looks
very cool. The rotation-thing is ok, but the twisting is real
neat. It is also hard to explain, but imagine a 7 coloured
picture, where a whirlpool starts in the middle, and drags the
picture with it. The image is visualized in 2 different sizes,
(One big (extended) so you can see what is going on, and two
small, so you can see it in normal resolution. Also, all of
these images change to half size from time to time. This way,
only half the number of points has to be calculated, making
the rotater faster. Looks good - but small. Next up is a
transparent vector-image on the bitmap picture (a see-
through image over a picture of a girl!). Even though the
girl is very pale (coders will know why - colours available is
limited to 2 per 4x8-square), the effect looks ok. It's pretty
fast too.
The last "real" part is my absolute favourite. It is also, in
my opinion, one of the best effects this year! The effect is
not very complicated - it's transforming line-vector, where
all sorts of different objects transform into other objects.
The cool thing about it though, is the speed (it's fast!), and
that some of the objects are moving while transforming. I
adore the guy climbing up the monitor and the vectorcube
made from one line only. Most excellent visual effect!
While loading the end part, DEPEH tries to get into people's
heads how to properly erase the screen (using the $E544
routine. However, I would like to say that there is only one
proper way of doing this on the C64. That is by storing the
desired values into screen memory (eg. 0400-07E8) and
colour memory (D400-D7E8).

An example follows on th next page!

LDX #$00
KAOS LDA #$20 (SPACE)
STA $0400,x
STA $0500,x
STA $0600,x
STA $06E8,x
LDA #$06 (BLUE)
STA $D400,x
STA $D500,x
STA $D600,x
STA $D6E8,x
INX
BNE KAOS

But why do this, when using the E544-rom routine is so much
easier? Simply because it is possible to create your own
eproms (rom's) on the C64. And somewhere out there, there is
a geek who fucked his eproms up or changed it cause he liked
his own version better than the original.
And then, if the E544 rom routine is not identical to what you
think it is, calling it will be no good. The result may be
unpredictable, and your colours may very well screw up.
I know you think I am over-reacting. Why should you use my
way of doing it, just because 0,5% of the C64 users have
screwed up kernals?
But look at it this way; my way of doing it always works on
ALL machines, the E544 rom routine will most likely work and
do the same. But you can never be sure, can you?
The end part of this demo is simply a text+upscroller with
info and credits.

RATING : 85%.
EUROPE +4 by TOUGH (REVIEW)
------------------------
What? A demo with 4 trainters? Atleast that is what I thought
when I first saw the filename. But actually it is a demo with a
political message, which is nice for a change.
Before we go on, notice that this demo consists of one 242
blocks huge file only, and to ensure that everyone (even
those without cartridges) could load it, a boot-sequence is
installed. Therefoe you must remove your cartridge, load ,8,1
and wait a million years! Oh well. First an intro-intro: A
EUROPE logo surrounded by (12 I guess, but I did not count)
circling stars. On we go.
In the intro, the strange name of the demo is explained. It is
a tribute to the four (hopefully) new members of the
European community: Finland, Norway, Sweden and Austria.
The effect on the intro screen is a logo TOUGH with an
overlay multi lexer circling over it. The Y-distance of the
sprites is quite small, but I doubt it's any record (that is
what they claim in the scroll). We space on.
The first real part of this demo is also "a record". It's 28
DYCPS with different speeds. Now, I know that SCROLL of
MEGASTYLE (who by the way is my all time favourite coder)
did 25 of these, and that he did also did 50 (but with one
speed only). Therefore, this probably is a record. But what
an utterly out-dated, boring record. DYCPS turned me on 4
years ago, but they sure do not do that anymore. SPAACE!
Next part is somewhat better though. Over half the screen is
covered with neat looking plasma. Again, JASON claims to
be the author of a record, and again I am not really sure if
it is. Frankly, I do not remember the size of the biggest I
have seen, so I am in no position to doubt his words.
I do have my doubts though. (Ohh, and CROSSBOW/CREST
is not Austrian, as the scroller says. He is German!).
The next part is as weird as the others. Another freaking
record! This time it is the common 80-split routin (done with
FLI) with 2 independant rasterbars behind it. Again, I do not
know if it was ever done before (I have a hard time remember-
ing all those records from back 3-4 years ago). All I know is
that CREST did FLI with removed sideborders. And eventhough
that was a bit faked, it still beats these two rastersplits.
But the most important thing about this part is: The scroll
text! (What?). You see, this part is a tribute to Finland (one
of the four countries joining the EEC). But in the scroll,
JASON asks a question: Where was Finland before joining
Europe? Part of Asia, Africa or Australia?
Ehrem!! Now pay attention, school boy: Europe and the EEC
are two different things. Europe is a part of the world, and
not something you can join or leave. Finland has been part
of Europe for many many years (some some war god knows
when). The EEC (European Economics Community) is a group
of 12 European countries with common economical interest.
Finland is not a part of this group, but would like to be. A
national voting will decide if the Finnish people want to join
or not! It is that simple. Go to school one day!
Having said this, we return to what's important (hehe.. As if
the C64 was, and international politics wasn't!).
The last part is a huge 111x24 chars logo techteching. The
sinus-speed/distance can be controlled by a joystick.
Overall, this demo has some good programming in it, but the
effects are really not up to todays standards. I am not
saying this because I do not like the effects. I do, and I
would prefer them over most vector-objects any day. But
I think that we coders are the only people still interested
in raster-effects like these. Generally, people want to see
loads of graphics, things rotating and twisting, and stuff
converted from other machines. Like it or not. It's the fact.
RATING : 65%.
INHUMANITY by EXILE (REVIEW)
-------------------------
This demo is only 83 blocks long. And it has got to be the
best 83 blocks I have seen for a long time. It's a dentro,
which is short for demo/intro (sophisticated intro).
After running, we're informed that the dentro was made for
the FUN FACTORY demo-competition. The text appears in
"Zooming letters", just like on many PC/Amiga dentros.
After that, a common chessboard-zoomer appears. Nothing
special about it, but keep in mind that this and everything
else you see was put into one file - without any decrunching
here and there.
Next up are some big rotating letters (around their own Y-
axis). They are followed by some 3 coloured filled transfor-
ming vectorimages. The vector-routine also includes a fast
GLENZ-object. The last effect in the demo is a line-vector
diamond-sort-of-thing rotating and transforming.
Not a very long demo, but for 83 blocks, it's pretty darn
amazing!

RATING : 80%.

WORLD OF CODE II by BYTERAPERS (REVIEW)
----------------------------------
It feels like just the other day I was reviewing WORLD OF
CODE from BYTERAPERS. That demo was good. And now they
are back (or should I say he's back) with a new demo.
MR.SEX returns!
I really do not know what kind of drugs MR.SEX is on, but he
must be on something. How else can anyone release this much
good stuff in such a short while? MR.SEX must be out of
school or unemployed!!!
Anyway. The thing that gets in your face first is a Finnish
flag zooming up on the entire screen. Then BYTERAPERS
PRESENTS is transformed into the screen (one letter
transforms into another and leaves a print), whereafter a
WORLD OF CODE 2 logo appears.
Enough introducing. Next effect is a vectorcity. It's actually
only a bunch of black sticks rotating around the Y-axis, but
it is intended to look like a city, and it does.
Then some rasterbars! Rasterbars? Yep, and it's the old
fashioned ones with no splits or anything. But the great
thing about them is that they have flexible Z-axis. This means
that the vectorbars (rotating around the X-axis) looks really
3D. BYTERAPERS are not the first to do this effect. Still, it
looks cool.
-----
Then a zoomer appears. And if anyone has seen 2ND REALITY
from FUTURE CREW (PC) you will know what I mean when I say
rotating zoomer. In this C64 version, a bitmap picture rotates
around its own Z-axis while zooming in and out. Really big,
smooth and great looking!
Obligatoric vector stuff comes next. A huge ball (takes up the
entire screen) appears, and stars'n stuff start noving around
on the ball. I think there's a word for this sort of routine,
but it seem to have slipped my mind. Anyway, it's seen before,
but this one is incredibly big.
After an IFLI (interlaced FLI) picture more vectorobjects
appear. This time we're talking texture-mapping on C64!! A
6-sided box with bitmap pictures on each side. Eventhough
the pictures stay where they are (the box is more like "see-
through" than texture-mapped) the thing looks good.
But here's the best: The next object is lightsourced with
texture mapping. This looks incredibly good. Last is a dot-
thrower telling you that the credits (and end screen) comes
up. The end screen is a bitmap picture with an interlaced
sprite-upscroll on it.
In my opinion, MR.SEX is the best active coder around these
days. If you have not already started voting for him, do it
now!

RATING : 90%.
ATTACK OF STUPIDOS 3 by BEYOND FORCE (REVIEW)
----------------------------------------
Another demo from a major demo-group this month? Impressive.
Parties (namely ASSEMBLY '94) really brings out the best in
people.
The introduction of this demo is quite professional. First
some interlaced text telling us that it's BEYOND FORCE, and
then text on a plasma-background tells us when the demo was
released. The plasmabackground was cool to look at, compared
to all the original movie-faders!
First part is a filled vectorcity, exactly like the one in
WORLD OF CODE 2. I think this one looks better (atleast it
has better design), but it keeps on rotating for ages, and
since you can press space, it gets really really boring.
Finally the drive loads, and a line-vector part appears. The
surfaces in routine are triangles made up from a lot of small
triangles. Therefore, each surface consists of a lot of lines.
But let me hurry on tothe next part, which is my favourite.
It is called realtime-zooming MANDELBROTFRACTALS, which
is just what it is. But the fractals just keep zooming and
zooming like there was no end to it, making this look really
awesome! Fractalzooming is seen before, but I think this one
is the best sofar.
Last part is even more vectorobjects. The routine is really
fast, but also extremely boring. It has all the regular filled
objects, some glenzobjects, an object with stencil filling, a
house, transforming objects and what do I know. Impressive,
but incredibly boring!
RATING : 80%.
WHAT'S AMIGA? by CONTRAST DESIGNS (REVIEW)
--------------------------------------
- I know. Isn't that some computer from Commodore, the
company that used to be? Oh well. Instead, let's cheer over
the fact that the C64 will kep going strong, the Amiga will
die soon, and that the PC will become even stronger!
And back to this demo, from a group I never heard of before.
But that doesn't mean they can't be as good as anyone else.
Unfortunately, the intro leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It
looks like a low budget crack, or some demo years back. It's
only messy design, logos and a few scrollers. But hell, they
are only intros, so let's go on.
1ST PART is a fractal-sort-of-thing like BONZAI did at the
DANIAX-party in MIDDELFART years ago. I do not know what
it's called, but it's a triangle made up from small triangles
(yeah, looks a bit like the one in ATTACK OF STUPIDOS 3,
only this one does not move!). After it has been calculated,
a sprite-upscroller appears. Interesting.
2ND PART consists of a bitmap-picture with a $3FFF scroll
in the lower border. The scroll has 6 D020 splits, and one
D016 splits under it.
4TH PART is rather strange. All you get is a logo in the upper
part of the screen, and then some weird drawing-routine in
the bottom. This routine is totally unpredictable, and I
really do not know what it's doing? You can press fire for
some options (something about "random", which is not the
word I prefer to hear with drawing-routines. (Now I am really
tempted to say that it looks somewhat like NEPTUNE's
newest incredible randomdrawingroutineinventions. But I
won't.. Hehe!). Hey.. Space worked.. Lucky me.
Contrary to the other parts of this demo, the next part is
good. Or maybe I should say funny. Cause it really is. First
you see some weird flag with a scroller in the middle. But
then hell breaks loose, the music changes, a guru meditation
appears, and even a well-known C64 basic-error sneaks up on
you. (Of course, it is all faked, and quite funny to watch!).
THE END PART consists of a couple of logo-swings and a
2x2 scroller. Apart from the funny flag-part, there's really
not much to come for in this demo.

RATING : 35%.

IMPACT DEMO by IMPACT (REVIEW)
---------------------------
Now here's an original name for a demo! It's IMPACT's first
demo.. And frankly; you can tell!!
After a strange flickering intro, a plotter appears. It is
very small (moves within a 8x8 chars field) and has a low
amount o dots. Lame.
After some picture, part 2 appears. This is completely
different from the first part, since this actually looks cool.
It's a floffy, meaning that you can control the width of each
raster line. (That was a lame explanation!! Anyway, it's the
princip CAMELOT used to do their FILLED VECTOR GRAPHICS
in PRODUKTHANDLER KOM HER if you remember that one!
Then another plotter part appears. And it's as lame as the
one before - only this time a few dots are plotted into a
bitmap-screen and are not deleted (leaving a shade). Totally
lame.
Next part uses the same floffy routine as before. But here
it is used to transform images between eachother. Looks
really neat.
The last two parts are total crap. Just some movie-fading
greetings and a text-upscroller. Strange demo. Generally
totally lame, but the two floffy parts seem totally misplaced,
as they are actually good.
RATING : 30%.
clearly WORLD OF CODE II from the BYTERAPERS, pulling
home a 90% rating - just like the first demo from them.
Welcome to another edition of SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT. This
is the place to be, if you are interested in a good debate or
in learning something from informative articles.

We would like to encourage everyone out there to write us
articles about topics of your own choice - or to tell us your
opinion about the topics we discuss. We need your help to
make this chapter even better. Here follows the program:
+ OFFICIAL OPINION POLLS RESEARCH +
--------------------------------
We return with the result of last months four opinion polls,
which was officially spread along with THE PULSE MAGAZINE.
The polls are also available on our WHQ, THE EVIL ISLAND,
which allows a broader audience the chance to answer our
polls - making a better and more clear result.

This month 56 people took part in our opinion poll, 44 of them
originate from THE EVIL ISLAND. We would therefore like to
urge more people to send us your answers to the poll, this is
the best way to reach the most objective result. We send our
thanks to everyone that did take part, and hope you will keep
on supporting the poll research - for a healthy debate.
This months new opinion poll is posted in GLOBAL REPORT,
but will also be available in form of a note released
together with this edition of THE PULSE.
POLL # 1 - out of 56 votes.
--------------------
What is your opinion of the old scene mentality, which claims
the scene is divided in groups. Ranging from the absolute
elite to the lame?
- -- --- ---- ---------------- ----- ---- --- -- -
1. It is for the scene. Therefore I am for it. 55%
2. Personally I think it isa load of bullshit. 29%
3. I do not have an opinion on that subject. 11%
4. I think it is destructiveto the scene. 5%
5. It goes against me. ThereforeI am against it. 0%
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
We have had a lively debate going for the last couple of
months, discussing if the term 'elite' was still a part of the
current scene - which could be described as the new age.
By the looks of this poll, we could establish that 34% of the
sceners are against it, while more than half, 55%, are for it.
A small percentage, 11%, do not have an opinion on this
subject - but fact remains, the scene has made a positive
verdict towards perhaps the scene's oldest heritage, the
ranking system in the scene.

I am pleased with the result, but find it alarming to see 34%
of the sceners are against the constitution of the scene.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
POLL # 2 - out of 56 votes.
--------------------
Now that the GENESIS PROJECT party, Tribute '94, has been
officially announced to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, this
November, do you then think you will be going?
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
1. I cannot afford it. Plain and simple. 32%
2. Absolutely. Would not miss it for the world. 21%
3. No. I do not have the time. 20%
4. I am not sure. I have to think it over. 18%
5. Hell no. I hate parties. Especially the C64 ones. 9%
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
This poll is quite interesting, especially as this concerns an
event only a couple of months away. The result may not please
the arrangers, GENESIS PROJECT, though, as it reveals how
a great number of people plan on not going.

The total amount of people going are 21% of the voters, but
the amount of potential visitors is 39% which is a pretty high
number considering it being a C64 party.

A lot of people seem to be out of money in the November month,
while 20% do not have the time. But I am still optimistic, and
expect a large number of people going to this huge event.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
POLL # 3 - out of 56 votes.
--------------------
What is your opinion about the total coverage THE PULSE
provides the scene?
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
1. It has the right amount of coverage. There is
something for everyone to read. 52%
2. I do not care about THE PULSE, to be honest. 23%
3. It needs more coverage from the cracking/modem
scene. 11%
4. In my opinion it is too concerned about the elite. 9%
5. It needs more coverage from the demo scene. 5%
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
Another (in my opinion) brilliant poll which is able to answer
a lot of questions on my behalf. A large number, over half of
the voters, are satisfied with the current amount of coverage
we serve our readers.

It appears from this poll, that only a very small amount of
people want more coverage from the cracking/modem or demo
scene, which is a satisfying on our account - while the 23%
who do not care about THE PULSE are mainly Americans or
full blooded phreakers, who does not read magazines. We will
keep on fighting though, heh.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
POLL # 4 - out of 56 votes.
--------------------
What is your opinion about the C64 scene as it is today, as
opposed to what it was in the earlier days?
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
1. I am depressed with what the scene has turned into. 34%
2. The scene will always stay great, no matter what
period of time we look at it. 32%
3. The scene is at its lowest point. It can only get
better. 14%
4. It seems everyone do not care about the C64
computer and the future for the scene. 9%
-. I am planning on quitting the scene, due to the state
it has turned into. 9%
5. The scene is better today, than it was in the earlier
times. 2%
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
The most depressing poll we have had sofar. A third of the
voters are far from satisfied with the current state of the
scene, as opposed to 32% who are happy with the scene as
it is at the moment.

We can conclude from this poll, that a total of 66% of the
sceners are depressed with the scene, while only 34% are
happy with it. VERY bad news! -----
ISOLATED DEMO-SCENE vs. OPEN CRACKING-SCENE
-------------------------------------------
The scene is divided in two catagories; the legal and the
illegal scene. Both of them parts of the 64-scene. But what
is the difference between these two parts when it comes to
their approach to the media. This will be this months topic
for discussion in SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT.

During the past couple of months, THE PULSE MAGAZINE have
ben approached by several people, who wanted to see a larger
coverage of the demo-scene. This request is also familiar to
other magazines, but what is the main problem in this request?
The fact that the demo-scene is isolated, making it nearly
impossible to cover completely. This is the reason why the
cracking-scene gets much more attention, because it makes
sure the magazine get the material needed to complete a
thorough coverage.

But why does it have to be this way? All demo-groups have
swappers, and therefore they have the essential ground to
make public relation. For some reason they fail in this,
probably about 85% of the demo-scene does, as opposed to
some 10% in the cracking-scene. These are shocking numbers,
atleast for the magazine editors who try to get as much news
as possible.
Are the magazines to blaim for not covering the demo-scene
properly? During the last couple of years it has been blaimed,
although it is a biased opinion of the critics. The magazines
simply have no possibility of covering the demo-scene, simply
because the demo-scene is not interested in working with the
midea. The cracking-scene on the other hand, has shown
great interest to work with the media, and keeps on supplying
news, reports and material. The demo-scene can apparently
only be covered, if the magazine reach out to get the news,
but this requires a whole lot of work, and will be extremely
expensive in stamps alone - and will most definitely cause
a serious form of stress for the magazines editors.

If we take a look at today's demo-scene, we would see a lot
of good and fairly active groups. The term fairly active is
used due to the amount of products released, but where are
the demo-groups when they have released their demos? They
are gone from the scene, working on new products - or not
doing anything at all. In other words, they are isolated from
the scene, another reason why a lot of demo-groups are often
announced dead by the public, only later to return with a new
demo. Maybe if the demo-groups signed on a couple of good
swappers, they would get more attention in the media, thereby
avoiding the rumours that normally gets around when a demo-
group have been inactive product-wise for a while. It is the
swappers who are responsible for the public relation, but
howcome most are incapable of doing this job in the demo-
scene?

Moving on to the cracking-scene, we see a whole different
picture. Granted, the cracking-scene is able to release more
products due to the amount of games released monthly, but
still there is a major difference in their way to work with the
media. Most cracking-groups have a lot of swappers, primarily
to release their products, but also to get a lot of attention
in the magazines, making their reputation better, and some-
times it even gets them higher in the charts. A perfect
example of excellent PR work is seen from SCS+TRC and now
also ALPHA FLIGHT, who are probably the best at this job in
the scene today.

Comparing the two parts of the scene, you would find that
they are far different. What part of the scene is then the
original based on the 64 spirit? Which one is the 64 famous
on? There are obviously a lot of different opinions on this
matter, but when speaking with sceners on other systems,
their greatest respect for the 64 bounds in the co-opera-
tion between the scene-groups, and last but not least its
outstanding media. No doubt the cracking-scene has all that,
while the demo-scene is an outrage on this matter.
We need to get the demo-scene back on its feet, working
with the rest of the scene to give it the scene quality we can
all be proud of.

We at SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT would love to hear your opinion
Hello and welcome to the next lesson in the use of Internet.
- --- -
Before starting, we want to say "thanks" to BACCHUS/FLT
for "correcting" our previous articles, un-necesarry as it in-
deed was. All we can tell you is that people not able to follow
these special lessons simply isn't dedicated and interested
enough. It is NOT an easy thing to learn, so if you REALLY do
wanna learn it then concentrate - don't argue!!!
- --- -
Well.. Let's get the show on the road.. This time I will tell
you about IRC and some other telnet-places..
IRC
---
What is IRC? Well, IRC is nearly the same as a chat-site, only
here you have between 80 and 100 channels and there's people
on nearly every one. However, here comes the problem: I have
been on the #64 channel lots of times, but it is empty! There-
fore use this channel more often. When you're talking to other
people on the channels you can send privates and files while
you are talking to them.
THE BLACKBOARD - ADVERTISEMENT CHAPTER
----------------------------------------
Hello once again and welcome to the advertisement chapter in
this, the September edition of THE PULSE MAGAZINE.

Introduced last month was a new way of typing the addresses
after and since nobody reacted negative about this, you'll
also be confronted with it this month...

Whenever you see a cross ( ) infront of a handle, it means
that the person behind the handle is only interested in LEGAL
wares, such as demos and so on.
Whenever you see a crown ( * ) infront of a handle, it means
that the person behind the handle is interested in both
ILLEGAL and LEGAL wares.

If you can't wait to see your own address in this magazine,
simply just write your address on a piece of paper and send it
to KBS/REGINA preferably before the 20th of September.
Then you get your address A-Z sorted and printed in here
every month. Ok, now. Go ahead and find yourself some more
contacts.

-----
REACTION FROM CALYPSO/AMNESIA,
Usually I do not write reactions, but I will make an exception
in this case. I see THE PULSE as one of the better magazines
in the scene, covering some new ideas with always interesting
text about interesting people and subjects. This make me
look forward to a new issue every month.
In addition I would like to say, that I get a bit irritated by
all the those people that keep complaining over THE PULSE
mainly being based on the elite side of the scene. Of course
it is, and why should't it be? Afterall, there are dosens of
magazines covering the same ideas and subjects every month.
I wonder why those people that keep complaining still read THE
PULSE. If they do not like it, they should't read it! That
easy. Probably they like the magazine more than they want to
admit. Keep up the good work!

COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR,
Thanks a lot for the reaction, I appreciate your positive
words about THE PULSE. You are absolutely correct, that
there are a whole lot of other magazines mainly based on
elite coverage, and there is a very good reason for that -
it makes a lot more interesting reading. I have to admit, I
would hate covering news from groups I never heard of before,
that would be too boring and would surely ruin the business.
People will always complain, athough I always figured it was
the old people in the world who complained about everything
in sight. Obviously the scene has a lot of these complainish
type of people, nothing we can do about it, except learn to
live with bad criticism - which I have. But I hope the sceners
would put on a smiley face, instead of always being so damn
negative!
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
REACTION FROM BLACK WIDOW/GOTHIC DESIGNS,
The main menu is a bit hard to read with the green text on the
black back-ground, the flashes also makes it a little hard to
see. However, I like the way that you have the chapter and
who wrote it appear at the bottom of the screen. All in all,
it's a good read with a lot of variety and text.

COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR,
I am aware of the visual problem our menu appear to have
caused many people. When putting the outfit together, we
did not consider the menu to hold such a problem, and
therefore we never changed it. Another factor is the fact
that the coder of the outfit, DR.ZIVAGO, is currently taking
a break from the scene - which is the reason we never
changed it. But one thing is for sure, a nw outfit is on its
way, and will be out together with the next edition of
THE PULSE MAGAZINE.

REACTION FROM AVALANCHE/ATLANTIS,
All in all, THE PULSE is one of todays best magazines. It's
very actual, the quality of texts is steady and the presen-
tation has its own style. What I am missing is a better view
into the entire demo-scene. Here THE PULSE is simply
lacking. Another critic must go to the actual menu-screen:
The text display in multi-colour and the "colour-scroll" are
really no good for visual trained people. Anyway, all in all
it's one of the best. Keep it up!

COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR,
Thanks for the positive reaction, spiced with a bit of
criticism. I do agree we lack a lot when it comes to covering
the demo-scene, but so does every other magazine in the
scene. You will be able to read more about this problem in
this edition of SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT, which should tell the
tale of why we do have more text about the demo-scene.
About the menu I can only refer to my comments for the
earlier written reaction - but do not dispair, a new outfit
is on its way, and surely you can do with this one till then.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
The monthly reports on actual magazines follows, this month
we looked at NEWS PRESS and DOMINATION which was just
recently released.
- -- --- ---- ----- ---------- ----- ---- --- -- -
REPORT ON NEWS PRESS/REBELS..
--------------------------
We looked at the latest edition, issue 14.

NEWS PRESS has gone through some changes since the last
time it was released, excusing the fact that it has been a
long delay since we last saw it.

The editors of NEWS PRESS are NEOTEC, DEEKAY, MR.WAX
and VIPER. The general editors however, are NEOTEC and
VIPER of REBELS.

The brand new outfit is original, with a text-display consis-
ting of a proportional chaset, using a small control menu in
the bottom of the screen. The chapter-menu is equally good
looking, with nice graphics and a simple text-display.

NEWS PRESS still offers the original chapters as before,
but new to the program is the US board report, including the
release-chart - following the latest trend. NEWS PRESS is
still very attentive towards the graphics-scene, serving
two chapters about computer graphics and disk-cover
graphics. NEWS PRESS also includes updated news and voted
charts, ending with a nice and long advertisement section.
A good and long program.
The English is as good as you could ask from any scene
magazine, while NEWS PRESS also moved towards the
professional attitude introduced to the scene by, guess who!

The best about NEWS PRESS, is the excellent work on the
chapters it serves, and a good and worthy professional
attitude towards the scene. Does not waste the readers time,
but manage to say what is sufficient in a sufficient amount
of time.

The worst about NEWS PRESS, is that it should have had
atleast one chapter offering good debates or atleast some
articles - making the magazine interact with the readers
about important scene topics. It also lacks an interview
chapter, which is a definite must for a scene magazine.

NEWS PRESS is a good magazine, well worth reading. The
editors are serious in their approach towards the scene, and
NEWS PRESS also gives their best to be more competetive
against the other magazines in the scene - which is good.

Basically you could define NEWS PRESS as a top cracking
and graphics-scene magazine. It does concern other areas
though, but mainly the before mentioned.
-----
REPORT ON DOMINATION
------------------
We looked at the first edition of this brand new magazine. It
was not released under any label.

DOMINATION has been announced to be released for quite a
while, and finally it was made available to us all. This is
what we saw and felt about it, after reading it through.

Although DOMINATION is a huge creation, it was all put
together by one man alone, JAZZCAT/LEGEND. He proves to
be a great editor, like he did when he worked for THE PULSE
and VANDALISM NEWS. But to think that he should be able to
continue making DOMINATION all by himself is absurd - but
very admireable if he can continue at the pace he is going.

The intro is absolutely awesome, with superb graphics from
ROB of CAMELOT. The outfit itself is a bit of a blow really,
with an upscroller like every other magazine. The graphics
remains good, while the menu is somewhat boring. All the
graphics, musc and coding was made exclusively for
DOMINATION.

DOMINATION offers 14 chapters, but some are based on the
same topic - like a couple of charts and addresses chapters.
DOMINATION has a good program on its hands, with the
latest news, an alright release-chart, a voted chart, a
couple of excellent interviews, good reviews (mags, demos,
music and graphics) and finally an illegal chapter for the
hack/phreak interested. In other words, DOMINATION has
something for everyone to read.

The English is excellent. Although JAZZCAT is Australian,
he still manages to write in an easy to read method, making it
possible for those who are not that good at English to keep
up.

The best thing about DOMINATION, is the large variety of
text, as stated earlier - there is something for everyone to
read. Another good thing, is that the editor, JAZZCAT, knows
what he is talking about.

There is not really anything mentionable when it comes to the
worst thing. DOMINATION is able to provide what it promises,
which is what we are supposed to look at. As a scene magazine,
it is well qualified.

What can I say, other than repeat the words JAZZCAT wrote
about THE PULSE - "This mag as a overall scene outlook on
its feel". (Whatever that would mean, heh).
